Spanish teacher at FCPS VA! 💃🏻 I feel like the only time I have to read is the 10 minutes I have between when I start and when I fall asleep 🙃#NoVAedchat
A1: I've always enjoyed reading. I had a comprehension issue when I was in elementary school but I always read very well. As a child I loved being read to. #NoVAEdChat
Adriana originally from VA but now attending Chapman University in California where I'm finishing my undergrad in both dance dance elementary education! #novaedchat
Hey #novaedchat! I read every night before bed. I always have and I probably always will. I developed this habit/addiction from my mom who also reads every night.
I got into reading when I was in the 4th grade... I started reading The Nancy Drew series, and I couldn’t put them down! #NoVAedchat#NancyDrew#Reading#redheads
I loved reading when I was little. I read a lot. Then stopped as I got busier (school, life, whatever). When I finished grad school I had to relearn how to read for fun!
#novaedchat
A1 I love to read. I loved hearing stories my Gma retold about Mrs. Rolie Pollie. My HS English T Mr. Williams taught me to enjoy a book for it's meaning & symbolism #novaedchat
A1: I like to read, though it normally depends on what I am reading. If it is a good book I can get lost in the book and have it read in a day or two. I got the love of reading from my mom and grandparents who emphasized its importance. #novaedchat
I've always enjoyed reading when I was interested in the book or subject subject matter. As I got older though, I had less time and motivation to read for enjoyment because of my busy schedule! #NoVAedchat
I go through phases... I sometimes read all professional books, then I pick up a book to straight up get lost in and remember what I'm missing! #NoVAedchat#balance
A1.2 One of my favorite things about my littles is that they are both already avid readers! Lifelong learning, growing imaginations... reading is AWESOME!! #NoVAedchat
A1a: Some of the biggest roadblocks are finding time to sit down and read. The other is finding books that will draw my interest. I find that if within the first few chapters if I am not interested I put the book down. #novaedchat
It is my “hobby!” High School... I know it sounds “silly” b/c most people have lost their love of reading by this point in time, but for the first time in my life, I was able to truly discuss the lit. (And light things on fire... in the classroom #dantesinferno). #NovaEdChat
My love of reading started right here!! My dad read to me EVERY night until 7th grade. Harry Potter, LOTR, Nancy Drew, anything! Quality time ➡️ love language ➡️ love of reading! 💗📚 #novaedchat
I think one of the best parts of teaching is helping students find books they love, helping them grow to excited readers was my fave! Consequently I LOVE reading YA books, even now! #novaedchat
Q2 In HS, Ss are expected to do a lot of academic reading out of class so in class time is more interactive. Their reading stamina isn't what it needs to be. #NoVAedchat
I used to check out as many books as the public library would let me! And even then, beg my mom to get more for me. :) LUGGING all those books to the car was part of the fun #novaedchat
Q2 Lack of literacy restricts student access and choice. If I hadn’t been exposed to so many stories I loved, would I love reading? Maybe not. #novaedchat
A2: I think that a lack of literacy (or knowing WHAT to read and trust) can have such detrimental consequences when it comes to being informed ... just for life in general. #novaedchat
One of my teachers used to say if you didn’t love reading, you just hadn’t found the right book. Tech enables us to give more equitable access to literacy! I love YA books too! #novaedchat
A2: A lack of literacy impacts our Ss in so many ways from lack of stamina when reading, to their writing, to their speaking. We need to expose Ss to many different types of books so they know what they like and don't like. #novaedchat
I love that you found your love for reading in college!! I am actually struggling to remember if I read anything in an academic setting during college... interesting 🤔 #novaedchat

A2a: I have found that boys are probably the hardest because many books aren't written for boys. I hated to read until my grandmother and mom showed me the choose your own adventure books. Then it was like the doors where opened. #novaedchat
I tend to have lots of photos like this...not as impressive with a kindle :) I sit on the steps/ledge and read as long as there's not a lot of splashing action! #NoVAedchat
A2: I think for my students, in middle school specifically, they have just started to read for a purpose, to learn. Previously, they've only read to learn to read. #NoVAedchat
A2: Literacy opens the doors for exploration and empowerment and provides a platform That supports learning, self-expression and advocacy. Gaps in literacy are also gaps in these areas. #NOVAEdChat
I’m a big fan of podcasts and I think it’s important for kids to learn how to gain information from listening, especially a good conversation. Another form of literacy. #Novaedchat
YEEEESSSSS! I argued with parents often, who felt their kids weren't reading if they weren't reading novels. SO MUCH to read, so little time! Why limit? #NoVAedchat
A2a: I think literacy (in the narrowest definition, the ability to read & write) is the most important thing we can give to students - it is what gives them opportunity, choices, opens doors. #novaedchat
A2b: But also, at our school, we talk about literacy across the discplines, "reading" graphs & equations matters too. Making understanding of the language of a specific content. This is also crucial for kids. #NoVAedchat
A3: I think that one of the most important literacy skills is fluency. Many Ss don't realize how to add expression as well as pace with their reading. This then hinders their comprehension and ends up turning them off to reading. They need to hear themselves read. #novaedchat
@CaitlynSaxton can I just steal your answer. This right here, folks. DITTO! #NoVAedchat And this includes listening for information, written and spoken language, and so much more!
A2: Literacy opens the doors for exploration and empowerment and provides a platform That supports learning, self-expression and advocacy. Gaps in literacy are also gaps in these areas. #NOVAEdChat
I’ve had a lot of conferences with parents who were concerned that their boys wanted to read Pokémon and Capitan Underpants. Paraphrase: you’re glad your boys want to read? ☺️#novaedchat
In reply to
@TechyMargaret, @jcjITRT51, @ProfeTravis
A3: for my students, I love building literacy in the TL! Weekly activity- don’t care WHAT you read, just find 3 things to read and journal it! The kids always find something and the results are awesome! VARIETY of literacy opportunities! #novaedchat
There are so many more options written to appeal to boys now! It's been fun to watch that change (when I was still in the classroom and as my nephews grow up!) #NOVAedchat
A3: I believe learners need explicit instruction, practice and reinforcement of reading strategies to include:inferring, monitoring/clarifying, questioning, visualizing and using context clues. Practice! Discuss reading! Expose learners to reading role models! #NoVAedchat
This is so true! If they want to read then why turn them away? Maybe use those to have other conversations about why they like them and then show them some others that are similar. #novaedchat
In reply to
@AbbeyFMiller, @TechyMargaret, @ProfeTravis
As a math teacher, I appreciate that. :) Seriously though, large amounts of information is conveyed through visualization and it’s easy to misinterpret if you haven’t learned how to read it. #Novaedchat
A3: I continue to be influenced by the work of @ctovani. Kids need to be able to make meaning from text through questioning & connecting. Simple yes, but it's key to being able to read and write effectively (in life, not just in school). #NoVAedchat
A3: There are so many. In middle school, for the most part (although not all), Ss have a handle on comprehension/fluency/phonemics. Key to teach questioning, discussion, evaluation of text...#NoVAedchat
Yeah, growing up I was always like "another prince and princess book? Why do we need this? " There weren't many options. Then I started teaching and I have found I like to read the kids books more than the adult ones. #NoVAedchat
Hah! Even if you did, I wouldn't be mad! Engaging in more conversation?! That's like being mad someone is excited about reading & learning! #NoVAedchat#NotABattleForMe
Q4: Many of us teach subjects other than language arts/English. How might we help our students continue to develop their literacy skills in our classes?#NoVAedChat
A3 There so many important skills, esp in the primary grades! 😳Ss need to know how to self monitor & connect to text. We want students to develop empathy, consider other points of view, and be ethical and global citizens #novaedchat
I LOVE sports and mysteries. When I was a kid, lots of those princess books didnt appeal at all! I love sharing Matt Christopher and @MikeLupica books! #NoVAedchat
A4: I think allowing the Ss to see and hear themselves read is key. I used to use iMovie and have my 2nd graders record themselves. This was before flipgrid. Now I m trying to work with Ts to use flipgrid in literacy. #NoVAedchat
Q4: Many of us teach subjects other than language arts/English. How might we help our students continue to develop their literacy skills in our classes?#NoVAedChat
A4: I feel in my heart of hearts that I am a teacher of reading, writing, discussing, and critical thinking first. The content is like a cruise ship that I put my students on to reach our literacy destination. #NoVAedchat
So important for girls and boys to have access to different types of stories! Girls need to see women who are more than a damsel in distress too, even if theyre not bored with the story! #novaedchat
A4: Provide them with interesting literature to read that will spark an interest. If the topic is interesting then they might want to read more on it. #novaedchat
A4.1 in world Lang, we have to start from (almost) scratch! I’m always trying to find interesting material that isn’t too baby for our HS Ss. Can’t start too ambitious or Ss can get frustrated and give up #NoVAedchat
A4: Every content has "texts" of some sort. We need to help Ss access them. Model, practice, train, question, create those "texts" themselves...#NoVAedchat
Yes, but I think these skills are equally important in secondary schools. Hopefully, we can build on your hard work at the middle school and high schools. #NoVAedchat
When I taught math, I gave my students frequent writing assignments. They complained of course but it made them better readers of the technical language inherent to the subject. #Novaedchat
Q4: Many of us teach subjects other than language arts/English. How might we help our students continue to develop their literacy skills in our classes?#NoVAedChat
Thankfully I found Wayside Schools and Luis Sachar otherwise I might not have become a Teacher who likes to read. I have just started reading some of the @MikeLupica books and they are awesome. #NoVAedchat
In reply to
@TechyMargaret, @MikeLupica, @MikeLupica
A4.2 in AP we read Harry Potter in Spanish! Using prior knowledge to work around unknown vocab and structures. Building connections through context and Ss own experience. Big skills for reading in another language! #NoVAedchat
Right? My #1 job is to keep you safe. My #2 job is teaching you to be a good human that can function in society to be exactly what you want to be. Reading, writing, thinking will do that.
#NoVAedchat
Hmm, we always looked for high interest, low reading level for our struggling readers... wonder if those resources have them in multiple languages! #novaedchat
A4 Being intentional about the type of text that is used and modeling the thinking behind the reading can bridge literacy between subjects. I believe there is an FCPS podcast on this topic? 🤗🧐 #novaedchat
I’ve found tween tribune is pretty good! We have some little cheesy novellas too but if anyone has digital resources, I’m interested! #novaedchat#langchat
I just partnered with one of the middle schools to have the Ss read to each other through Google Meet. We then had a conversation about what they observed about the readers. It was huge and the Ts have said the Ss now are becoming more aware of how they sound. #NoVAedchat
Before I leave tonight, I just want to make sure to publicly thank @AnnHillsBennett for being my personal library and supplying me with great books to read (and background stories to accompany each). #novaedchat
A4: To support the development of students disciplinary literacy let’s: teach, model, provide practice opportunities, and explore the types of literacy related to our subject areas! #NoVAedchat
Right? My #1 job is to keep you safe. My #2 job is teaching you to be a good human that can function in society to be exactly what you want to be. Reading, writing, thinking will do that.
#NoVAedchat
Or you could also look at more complex text using the help of a group. I may have seen a certain (Kilmer) library employ that strategy which I will be stealing for tomorrow's lesson. @libraryms#NoVAedchat
Not related to a question... but I think reading a broad variety with Ss is important. Learning about experiences beyond your backyard is CRITICAL to success #NoVAedchat
Good building blocks but I’m trying to move beyond translation 🙃. Working on a storytelling PBL unit in level 2 right now where Ss will be writing their own stories based on Hispanic legends and their own experience with childhood stories 🤗 #NoVAedchat
Your librarians should be able to help get you to some of the databases available in spanish. (World Book and maybe something else, I forget right now but email me tomorrow...) #novaedchat
Maybe we can teach people to write instruction sheets that make sense. I think the book that came with my camera was written by the engineer who designed it. :) #Novaedchat
Yes! Exactly! As I explain to parents at BTSN, not a single one of my +1000 students is a historian -- so my job is to help them develop skills in whatever life path they choose (although I wouldn't mind at least one historian!) #novaedchat
@GCMLibrary and I went to an author talk to hear 1 of the 3 speaking that night... and I bought (and loved) all 3 books they wrote! We must be open to new authors, new experiences #NoVAedchat
A5: When in the classroom I always would make a time right after specials and right after recess where we would have Free choice. During this time I always would read. I found Ss always wanted to know what I was reading and led to many of them choosing to read more. #NoVAedchat
Literally just did this today!! 🤣. Looking for more fun little thing than research tho. Our librarians are AWESOME when it comes to building our collection of Spanish books! @ChantillyHSLib#novaedchat

Hey! #NoVAedchat The delay threw me off and I forgot it was Weds night already! Saying hello before things wrap up. Keeping w/ tonight's topic, I definitely love to read. Just started (& recommend) iGen by @jean_twenge Very informative & interesting as it relates to our students!
A5: Talk about books with kids. Display what you're reading. Bring them to the library. Give them time to read. Stop calling reading HOMEWORK. #NoVAedchat
Start by telling your students about what you’ve read. Don’t just display the book cover on your door. Actually explain what you like and don’t like about the book/article/podcast. #Novaedchat
A5: Working w/ teens gives me the awesome opportunity to share book recs (and them with me!). They see me reading & writing, succeeding & struggling #NoVAedchat
Nikki shared this yesterday and now I'm obsessed with @grantdraws work! I think we need this in all our classrooms and office as a reminder! #NoVAedchat Thanks @CHS_writer
Love that. I think it would be a fun activity to do with kids to actually make a grid like that with the specific books that play each role! #NoVAedchat

@TechyMargaret, @grantdraws, @CHS_writer
A5 students need classroom libraries w varying levels, genres, & CHOICE! At McNair our PTA has spent $40,000 on classroom libraries in the past 2 years. Having high interest text has made a huge impact on S engagement & excitement for reading! #novaedchat
A5: Also- finding relevant articles from authors on the power of reading for human connection & empathy and sharing them is so important- Dewdney, @mattdelapena, for example #NoVAedchat
A5: maybe building in time for reading and reflection (book club style, google classroom question, Socratic etc.) around current / unit themes. Show them that I love to read and model how to talk about what I learned #novaedchat
A5: ... by authentically incorporating literacy into our lessons. Include activities that you enjoy. Excitement is contagious! Engage your students in conversation & find their interests, how can you include them & make learning relevant to Ss and Ts. 😀📚#NoVAedchat
A5 Ss seeing their T read is so important too. I loved reading during DEAR time with Ss. I would just have to watch the clock & make sure I didn’t lose track of time! #novaedchat
A6: find good options for student choice and build in free read time to my upcoming lessons (the theme is stories and legends so perfect timing!!) 🤓📚 #novaedchat
A6: Find out their interests, dreams, aspirations, situations and find books, articles, short stories, etc that they can relate to that is on their level. #NoVAedchat Meet them where they are.
A5 Let them see you read !!! Share your passion and make time to read with students in class (set aside 20 minutes and read for pleasure - classics, comics it doesn’t matter - just read together ) #NOVAedchat@DynamicDuda338#WonderTwins
A6:.I will 1️⃣share my ❤️ for reading and literacy2️⃣incorporate disciplinary literacy into my lessons and routines 3️⃣explicitly model and discuss strategies 4️⃣ include different types of literacy #NoVAedchat
This is so important! I had built my own classroom library of thousands of books. I was so sad to let it go, but it went to other teachers' class libraries! I had so many levels and variety <3 and so many favorites! #NoVAedchat
