Our Early Scribbles Role Play Box range is designed to encourage writing and mark making from an early age through providing children with the tools and motivation to do so! For more info please visit... https://t.co/J9P0DWTT9f#UKEdChat#EarlyYears
When children in reception invite you to the #royalwedding that they’re planning... the groom tells me he’s going to wear his lion costume on the big day. 😊 🦁 #PrimaryRocks#ukedchat#EYFS
#UKEdChat A1: For most of the time, not significantly - as many schemes of work are planned with a timeline consideration. However, towards the end of the summer term, or other 'hotspots', loss of timetabled teaching periods can prove to be a frustration.
#UKEdChat Q2
Do you feel your school/department has the balance right between a wide curriculum and looking at topics at suffient depth?
Pls use the hashtag & A2...
#UKEdChat A2: Absolutely. We work collaboratively and with flexibility amongst colleagues to ensure depth and pupil-led enquiry across many subject areas. This is enhanced by timetabled enrichment afternoons, plus rotated half-termly project tasks.
#UKEdChat Q2 again
Do you feel your school/department has the balance right between a wide curriculum and looking at topics at suffient depth?

#UKEdChat A2: I feel it’s something that could be improved. It can’t be the same every year. It depends on the pupils, they are the ones who should guide the time and depth spent in each area, depending on their strengths and weaknesses.
#ukedchat a1 yes and also time constraints means not enough time to teach important things that aren't on the curriculum...mental and emotional wellbeing for example. Things that are essential to living successfully.
Got primary-aged children who love to craft? If you have you've probably heard of #toucanBox's fortnightly craft box subscription - but did you know we're giving away free boxes to one lucky teacher for a whole year?! Enter here: https://t.co/lmIGrIARHJ#competition#ukedchat
#UKEdChat A3: In an ideal world, I would love to have the time to delve deep into areas such as current affairs, cultural nuance, diversity of thought, a third language (Mandarin would be great!) - all with greater pupil appreciation/development of soft skills.
A1 At busy times of the year (like now) time seems to go by too fast. Usually there is enough time to cover what we have planned because our lessons are 40 - 45 minutes long. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q3 again
Which topics would you like to teach in more details, and what would that look like in your own classroom?
Pls use the hashtag & A3...
#UKEdChat A3: I would like more time to explore science topics with more investigations. Maths topics with more time to create an in depth understanding of the basics i.e. shape, number, data. English, good use of vocabulary via discussing, analysing then putting into practice.
A2 We have a balance of different curriculum areas. We have half-termly topics and six weeks or so ensures enough time to look at topics in a meaningful way. Making sure key learning intentions are taught works for us. #UKEdChat
At one school I worked in we had a Maths day every half term where the whole school worked on in-depth Maths projects. It really raised the profile of Maths thinming #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A4: No. Can any subject correctly be studied in too much depth? Range of perspectives renders detailed discussion valuable. Should we prioritise certain topics over others? Yes, imo.
A3 I find children in my class love history so exploring those topics in more detail would be great. I have set up activities where chn have found clues pretending to be archaeologists. More exploration and investigation into history topics would fit nicely with this. #UKEdChat
An inspiring article about anxiety relief for kids. Whether parent or teacher, it's worth a read.
Thanks to #Harrogate based mum @AnisaLewis for bringing it to our attention! #UKEdChat
A4 No. How can you teach something in too much detail? You could take too long about it, or pitch it too high, but I don't see how the detail itself could be detrimental. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A5: Use of pre-teaching can be beneficial. For example, quick use of Kahoot/Socrative quiz to gain baseline. Also pushing out resources to share key vocab with pupils prior to lesson time also re-familiarises. Digitally is effective, but paper can easily suffice.
A5 #ukedchat careful questioning before the start of the lesson? Assessing what chn know by using technology, questionnaires, worksheets. Have different challenges to achieve different depth of understanding depending on their starting point..?
A5 Assessing prior knowledge is important so you can plan from the right starting point for the children you are teaching. Otherwise you risk boring children (because they've already been taught something) or leaving gaps in learning by starting too far ahead. #UKEdChat
A6 #UKEdChat the only disadvantage for deeper learning I can think of is not having enough time to get through the curriculum thus testing will be hindered. The question that arises is what are we acrually testing and why?
#UKEdChat: A6: It depends on the depth of understanding that is being assessed & also whether we teach to assess or assess to teach. Deeper learning has few disadvantages; so long as it is actually deeper learning (building on an escalating understanding)not just repetition/same.
Has anyone got a link to a blog or article that talks about the wider skills teachers need, like enthusiasm, passion, creativity, etc? #ukedchat#edchat
I'd love to prioritise increased awareness of current affairs, diverse perspectives, soft skills & creative approaches to curriculum. It's great that learners (& most in the previous 30yrs) know the mummification process but I'd rather prioritise the above in greater depth.
A8 #UKEdChat have more than one cpd in a certain area. Follow through with a school strategy to ensure implementations and sharing ideas of what worked for deeper understanding.
#UKEdChat A7: Over-arching Q set at the start of a History topic ('Were the Victorians really vile?'). Pupils, in self-managed time, incorporated aspects learnt of the era to address question in independently creative format - drop-in sessions alongside the 6-week unit.
A7 Asking chn to solve a problem where three pieces of information needed to be used. Learning partners talked about how to solve the problem. The children were 'stuck' for a while and had to think hard. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A2 - We spent a lot of time looking at our curriculum last year, moving to an enquiry-led approach. We had staff training where the motto was 'do less, better'. I'm not sure topics get 'sufficient' depth but they are covered more deeply than previously.
