The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Their inability to listen for more than a few minutes. I keep my teacher led activities at 7 minutes or less and get them going on activities where they can find their own navigation to find the answers (while learning). #bfc530
Morning #bfc530
My most favorite change is that Students are WAY more excepting of all #LGBTQ people today then when I started and it's pretty awesome:)
I most certainly have enjoyed all of my students over my 28 years as an educator...even those who challenged me most! One change I have noticed, however, is a more prevalent ‘self-focused’ attitude among more Ss today. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 Still working on a good morning routine with the puppy, but today is a good day, he held off his morning business until after I started coffee, and we went outside while it was brewing! Now if he just stay like this for the next 30 min!
I think social media has had a dramatic impact on my MS Ss. It’s an entirely new world they are navigating. As a teacher I incorporate missing into instruction. How to leave a positive footprint. #bfc530
Ss are much more dependent on their phones. They are also not raised readers. Doing all I can to get them to think for themselves while connecting them with the right books. #bfc530
I've seen both + and - changes in Ss. A positive: They seem much more interested in making a difference in the world. I think it reflects the changes we've made in teaching: PBL, no textbooks, global projects #bfc530
I’ve been teaching only 8 years but what has always surprisd me is the Ss willingness to be “taught at” I always try to get them involved in what and how they learn in order to get them invested #bfc530
I don’t know that the kids have changed that much. My attitude & willingness to let them take the lead as often as possible is what has changed. They are still kids. Many of my babies have too many adult responsibilities & have to grow up too fast. #bfc530
I find that attention spans have drastically shortened and pressure has increased. This appears to have pushed students further away. I work to make students realize they are not so separated and alone; that they belong and have the ability to improve this world. #bfc530
Oh wow- I began teaching before social media, cell phones, etc when we wrote notes on a board! It was also before lock down drills and the year of 9/11. The Ss are the same, but their environments are so different #bfc530
I came in mid-year and understood that they loved their previous teacher. Worked through it and I think I won them over with my charm *lol*. Actually, they've accepted me, and relationships have been built between us. #bfc530. It's not easy to replace someone.

Welcome! This is great way to start the day. Lots of positive vibes shared, from people who know just the right things to say...we’re all in it! #bfc530
"They are not raised readers."
Excellent point. Sometimes books have to find people.
I read voraciously, but not all on my house do.
Love to discuss books with my Ss and share with them what I'm reading. #bfc530

Biggest change in students, technology, from overhead to 1:1 chromebooks, with "answers" so convenient, it seems there is more struggles to problem solve or think out of box #bfc530
One critique is that their number sense has been getting worse every year. I have been sharing this with my colleagues and some are looking at PD books by @joboaler and @JessicaShumway for ideas/opportunities to play with numbers. #bfc530
Attention spans have definitely decreased. We try hard to teach Ss how to focus (& try to train Ps to help them at home). It's an uphill battle. #bfc530
Excellent! Good for you and your district people who are supporting you. We all wish you the best with the challenge ahead, and look forward to hearing how it all goes #bfc530
I've gone from Parochial school to Public, and then after 9 years, changed from a low-income school to more middle class. Each has its challenges, but that's what has made it fun and challenging. Change is good. Keeps you on your toes. The "job" has changed, though. #bfc530
I started reaching in 1996, so use of #edtech is an obvious change. But in Ss, more independence, more connections to peers, better at collaboration, more awareness of issues. #BFC530
They have become digital citizens in a high tech world-connecting in ways they never could before-that’s the biggest change-and it’s awesome for teaching and learning and student growth! 😊 #bfc530
search your school w/ the search bar at the link given then click + Add to Map.
Can edit text, add photo & create custom icon after that if you like.

This is what I was thinking. Devices and program have led to the decline of attention and there has also been a shift with parent support of teachers which gets passed down to Ss who think there will be zero consequences for certain behaviors. #bfc530

Ownership of grades, behaviors and accountability of actions has changed. The tone of the students, as well as the parents, has shifted over the years. #bfc530

I have also noticed more and more they are coming in with outside “difficulties” hanging over their heads. Need even more love and support from us. #bfc530
I feel a sense of passiveness growing in students along with something like entitlement. It’s hard to work with at times. Skills are more shallow now. Socioeconomic factors loom very large. #bfc530
Ss are much more dependent on their phones. They are also not raised readers. Doing all I can to get them to think for themselves while connecting them with the right books. #bfc530
I find now there are many Ss that seem tech savvy b/c they can do lots w/ their phone, but don't understand internet, wifi or computers in a larger context.
When teaching, can't assume they know everything about tech!

The latest fad/change the past few months...fortnight, somehow my 7th graders work every conversation back to a game they played of fortnight. I actually appreciate their synthesizing it into our discussion #bfc530
24 yr teaching-we have seen the world become more connected through technology & less connected with hands on activities. The digital age has pushed a makers movement and a need for project based learning that has students & teachers excited! #bfc530

This is fun ?. I started in 1985. We used CHALK&chalk BOARDS. I still believe kids r kids. But the environment they r in has changed dramatically. #isthatgood? #bfc530
I have learned that homework is a failure. I still have classwork that may not get finished (which must be completed outside of class), but I'm not overloading the students with useless redundancy. Most are finished prior to leaving. #bfc530

More Ss w/ IEPs these days, outlining accommodations to help them succeed. Ss seem more open to telling others they have an IEP; less stigmatized. Sometimes point of pride as it gives them access to a computer for notes & a quiet room to work in.
#bfc530
I agree. They can copy & paste research well, but have a difficult time breaking it down to what is most important. Almost as if the work of going to library & writing out our info forced out of necessity to pull out the important parts #bfc530

One thing that troubles me now - I teach 5th graders in a middle school setting. It is March already and there are many Ss whose parents I have not met. They do not come for conferences, open house, etc. That is getting worse. #bfc530
My teaching has evolved in 24 yr from showing art on posters & drawing demos on a chalk board to digital field trips to museums through @googlearts , demos with real mediums projected with a doc camera. Flipped video lessons, ipadart & 3d printing #bfc530
I’ve seen that in Ts as well. New Ts are very comfortable with social media, phones, and tablets. But not as comfortable with older tech - desktop, DVDs, how to fix if there’s a glitch... #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530
As the dad of a teen, I find the only thing more depressing than the current selection of contemporary books for our older kids, is their subject matter. If it's not vampires then it is kids with terminal illnesses or about how awful life as a teen is.
I agree with the entitlement. There seems to be a generalized idea among both Ps and Ss that they don't need to make much effort in school. If they don't try & don't learn, it's somehow the Ts fault. #bfc530
Has anyone else ever felt like the intro of tech has brought more work (when innovation is supposed to bring less). For example, 25 years ago, I announce HW, write it on board now I put in on my website and post assignment to Google Classroom as well #bfc530
Exactly, or taking summer classes in a certain level math so they when you take the SAME class during the school year you get a better grade. How about take the class that's right for you? #bfc530
These words reside close to me. It’s hard to get lost in state and district demands, one can easily loose sight of what really matters. Stay connected to your students, take time to listen to them, and always take time to have fun!
My friends who are math teachers would agree. For me, it's kids who ask about extra credit BEFORE a test or writing piece How about focusing on doing a great job on the assignment? Kids always make things interesting #bfc530

Yes. Many of my Ts seem to be teach all evening. Ss contact them & they respond online. I love their dedication, but think they need some downtime too #bfc530
To get them speaking to each other, and discussing topics, I've added time into my lessons to get them into groups to "share" their responses to our reading. They need to know how to communicate face to face about something other than video game discussions. #bfc530
That's the truth. Digital lesson plans are also expected to be much more in depth and take much longer to write than the squares on a piece of paper I used to write it #bfc530
Agreed. My point was that just the acting of questioning it’s value is important...purpose? why? It might help to refocus educators, parents and students. I believe there is a place for some types of hw. #bfc530
I feel as though my bag of tricks is never full enough. I now see disengagement in 10 yr olds that concerns me greatly. I need inspiration myself lately. #bfc530
Ss are no longer taking an initiative to do a warm-up on the board. When I walk into my room, I catch myself saying, “Look at the board.” This q makes me think of how can I make warm-ups more interactive. #bfc530
Of course technology has. Aren’t better tools suppose to facilitate the ability to do more better? Like a team of mules/plow vs tractor/16 row plow. You can create a lot more with the latter. Too many thought technology would do it for them. #bfc530

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness..."

I am not convinced attention span is shorter, just what catches someone’s attention requires something different. With more immediate distractions, more engaging activities are required to hold their attention. #bfc530
I started as an ECSE T 24 yrs ago. Expectations & standards have raised, not always developmently appropriate, for our littles in preK, K & 1st, but as the T I still work to do what is right to support and help my littles grow & develop. #bfc530
