Greetings and welcome to the #nt2t chat! Today we'll be discussing these questions, all about "Migrating to Twitter." Who has migrated to the chat? Introduce yourself!
Good morning all! I am Gwena, HS Spanish T from IN. Twitter has helped me grow more than any other medium. And I was totally opposed to it at first! #NT2t
ICEBREAKER: In today's chat, I'm using field trip and family photos from seasons not typically associated with ice. Get it? Icebreaker. Ba-da bum!
But seriously, folks, to break the ice, tell us where you're originally from. (In the spirit of our theme of "migrating.") #nt2t

My icebreaker answer: I was born in New Haven, Connecticut. I'm raising my family near Hartford, Connecticut, so I'm not far from where I grew up. I lived in suburban Washington, D.C., for several years, and our first child was born there. #nt2t
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS. Currently migrating between my computer & the stove as I make pancakes. :) #nt2t
Icebreaker: I am originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana!! I have lived in Madrid, Spain, and travel to Canada, Mexico and France. Also traveled to a few states in the USA. I have lived in MI, and Lafayette, IN. #NT2t
Questions and answers begin in a couple of minutes. For the complete, detailed questions, refer to this card or read the tweets. Some of the individual questions displayed on the photo cards are somewhat abbreviated. #nt2t
Hello #nt2t - Stephan, co-founder and co-mod of the chat. Teacher coach and ELT lecturer based in Rio de Janeiro. Hoping to migrate to more coaching this year.
Carrie, born in Stuttgart, West Germany (am I giving away my age there?). Raised in rural Missouri. Taught in rural Missouri 30 minutes away. Assistant Principal in rural Missouri the opposite direction 30ish minutes away. #NT2t
Good morning Jeremy and @shyj. Thanks for the notice to join #nt2t. I have a beautiful morning salute for all. @kentkristensen1 allowed me to write a poem for the magnificent #nature photo he sent me from Bosnia / Herzegovina.
When I lived in Maryland I was fascinated at being under the Mason-Dixon line. It felt as much Dixie as Stamford, Connecticut, feels like New England. #nt2t
A1. I have stepped out of the classroom and am now a teacher leader/ instructional coach. I found twitter reluctantly looking for additional pd to support my teachers in new ways. #ALPLearn#nt2t
Lauren, is this an original photo that you shot? If so, I would like to place it in my global gallery of artistic expressions, #WinterWonderland18❄️. Invitations will be coming out soon. (ex at https://t.co/X2inQOgqh5) #nt2t
A1: My experience was somewhat of an overwhelming snowball effect. I first heard of Twitter at my first #EdCampFW. I was like a sponge my first year, soaking up all the new information I could and wondering if I could ever do this successfully. Lol. #NT2t
A1: I was at an education conference and the keynote had everyone sign up for an account and tweet while he presented. Thought that was the dumbest thing ever since we were all in the same room together! #NT2t
A1) I was teaching for an online charter. Had colleagues but only met w/ them intermittently. Kept hearing about education Twitter & decided to take the plunge. It was good decision. :) #nt2t
A1) Blogging with a colleague at the education agency I work for brought me to Twitter, and I got hooked. Here I straddle the line between "parent" and someone who works in education but has a lot to learn from teachers and administrators. #nt2t
A1 In a broad sense, I came to Twitter to educate people about my business. That became more conversational as I learned more about social media. #NT2t
A2: Currently I use Twitter not only professionally / personally, but also to post what's going on in my classroom as well as pictures of students. They love it! #NT2t
A2) I share resources (articles, tech tools, tips for using Google tools, etc.) w/ my Ss via classroom hashtag. Twitter feed is embedded in my class homepages in Canvas. #nt2t
A2 Twitter should at least be available in classrooms. Students have assorted social media accounts, and Twitter gives them at least one opportunity to reach out from their friendly confines to see how the other half lives. #NT2t
I love that some of the Ts at my daughter's school do this. I have a private list w/ my kids' schools & some Ts so I can easily see what's going on. :) #nt2t
A2: I think all educators should be using Twitter to teach empathy. Connecting with classrooms from around the world to share your culture, beliefs, way of life is priceless. #NT2t
A3) When I worked w/ pre-serv Ts, I tried to encourage them to get on Twitter but w/ limited success. Think it's valuable to share where you get great ideas/resources. "Found it on Twitter!" :) #nt2t
A3: Before you intro ANY social media tool, you must start teaching about #digcit first! Kids (and adults) MUST understand how to be responsible & what repercussions can occur if used unsafely. #NT2t
A3 The best teacher is example with results. Do your thing with students and let others see how well you do, giving them incentive to join the fun. #NT2t
A3) (Yeah, that's me in the pic with a now somewhat older daughter.) Share what you get on here, all the time. Invite them to join you on a chat. #nt2t
Q4) In what other ways might we use Twitter to reduce the divide between digital immigrants (who were born before the digital age) and digital natives?
(Think back to your first question about what brought you here. What would bring a digital native?) #nt2t
Nice! I don't believe it. That's not a husband behind you?
I like sharing pics of the girls from when they're younger, tho they're still just 13 and 8. #nt2t
A4) My son uses Twitter to follow animators and to share his work with others. He has also used it to collaborate w/ others on his animations (help with voiceovers). #nt2t
A4: Great ?. My own sons are 23 and 21 and tell me all the time they grew up with [tech]. They say Twitter is 4 old people. One way I draw my students in is by posting their pictures, as I mentioned earlier. Other than that I must confess I don't know. Here 2 learn! 😱 #nt2t
A4: I think the best bet is getting the immigrants and natives in the same room together and have them teach each other. Would love to see Ss holding tech "classes" for those in their 60's and up. Many want to learn but have no resource. #NT2t
A4 There is an interesting digital divide to bridge. Digital immigrants tend to be on Facebook. Digital natives are more likely to use Twitter or other channels. I haven't seen the divide close in my almost six years on social media. #NT2t
At registration day I tweeted out challenges for all to participate in: "Find the choir T & serenade her w/ Mary Had a Little Lamb." Or "2 new 5th Grade Ts in the house! Get a pic fist 👊 bumping them both!" #nt2t

A4: As a digital native, I still took some convincing to come to Twitter. It was mostly because of the reputation Twitter has...I think the issue is not getting natives TO Twitter, but teaching them HOW to do Twitter well. #nt2t
Question 5 coming up shortly.
A reminder that for today's chat, the complete questions in context are in the text of the tweet. The photo cards have a shorter summarized version of the question. #nt2t
A4: Especially with digital natives that want to be professional, it's hard to convince them Twitter can be used for anything but memes and burns. #nt2t
Different generations use different tools which is great! I think we need to keep up with what is available and find the best use based on need and tools that meet the need. #NT2t
Q5) What are some tips for adapting to Twitter culture (as an educator or otherwise), when working or living in an environment of non-Twitter users? #nt2t
And everyone can totally learn from one another. Kids know the tech; adults know the interpersonal psychology. All are part of digital citizenship. #digcit#nt2t

Small sample size of me, but I've seen family and friends tweet once and quit. On the other side, these same people and others are heavy duty into Facebook. It's how I've reconnected with my high-school class. #NT2t
A5) Think you have to go through the "stages" of Twitter & get to where you don't stress about missing something important. Good stuff will keep "floating to the top." Figure out way to make it work for you. #nt2t
A5: I think it is very important to come into Twitter with an open mind for learning and listening. Follow others with a variety of experiences, cultures, & points of view to challenge ur thinking and encourage personal growth. #NT2t
Hm... I do hear others make the "old people" claim but also sense some general indifference to Twitter from the younger set. And a challenge is it's not cool if we're into it. #nt2t
A5: #satchat was a great place for me to start, but I feel like it got too big so I eventually quit attending. Then I found this and feel like I finally found my niche. The better I am, the better I can do and be for my students. #nt2t
A5: Not tone policing. It's difficult enough to communicate with only text, so give others the benefit of the doubt. The vast majority of eduTwitter is here to learn together! #nt2t
A5 Keep in mind that social media -- particularly Twitter -- is about conversation. If you keep your sights on that as opposed to follower numbers and other stats, you'll have a great outlet to engage with and learn from your community. #NT2t
As a member of the 'younger set', I can confirm that the type of young person you would want to contribute to eduTwitter is the same type that would be indifferent. Source: My Past Self. #nt2t
Babysteps are perfect! It's how every one of us starts to walk. Eventually it leads to walking with arms at our sides with confidence and longer strides. #NT2t
True! Engaging in Twitter is only partially retweets, follows, and likes...it is much more that conversations and replies that happen in actual conversation! #nt2t
A6) Use it w/ or at least demo/talk about it w/ your Ss. Let them know that they can connect w/ authors, those interested in similar things, etc. Talk to your kids about it. Mine know that I do chats all the time. :) #nt2t
@SFecich uses my 'Twitter Testimonal' probably every semester to show Ss the value of Twitter...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's a journey Ss need to take themselves! The ones who contribute are the ones who will stay. :) #nt2t
That's so silly (part of the reason why I don't care for FB at all-ppl seem a little more brazen). I take what I can from others, ask questions when needed, and share nuggets of my own as well. #NT2t
A5 Dropping in briefly to say it’s important to learn how to ignore the “noise” somyou can have the meaningful conversations you’re looking for. There’s a lot of self-promotion that’s not productive. (Also, hello!) #nt2t
Q5) What are some tips for adapting to Twitter culture (as an educator or otherwise), when working or living in an environment of non-Twitter users? #nt2t
A5 old people using media makes it uncool, but if the old people are using it for a different purpose, does that help? eg PD vs following my grandchild? #nt2t
Yeah, everyone needs to find the tool that works for him or her. Twitter isn't the end-all but for educators I think it is a strong contender for promoting growth and collaboration. #NT2t
A6: Hmm.. maybe give incentives like during lunch to eat out first person to answer this question in my classroom before lunch is over gets a prize!? #nt2t
As an undergrad at the time, it was the equality of Twitter. I could show, in a public way, my education knowledge and desire to learn more. Potential employers seeing that was a huge draw initially! #nt2t
If you want to take a shot at what dynamic conversation really looks like on Twitter, check out the #JustBeSocial thread that originated in October. Now that's a party, back and forth, and even learning from each other. #NT2t
Yup! Multiple interviews and job offers (right out of college) in a great district was the direct result of a Twitter connection...@TechyMargaret for the win! #nt2t

A6: I love the idea of catching undergrads early on! During #NT2t we get many who were assigned participating in a chat for a class they are taking. It just takes one chat that welcomes undergrads to help them see the potential here. #NT2t
Yep! It has been so pounded into my generation the idea of 'stranger danger' online, and then most education dept will pound the idea of online professionalism ('Lock it all down!'), when you can use your public profiles in positive, professional ways. #nt2t#PDP
Challenge:
You've migrated to Twitter and continue to grow from the experience. Some say they've learned and grown more here than ever before in their professional career.
But learning is lifelong and migration is part of the life cycle. So... where are you diving in next? #nt2t
A6: My own kids (18.7 and 20.25 in age) are digital natives. They don't "do" Twitter. I hope when they get to need networking they remember where many of my greatest connections came from. #NT2t
Yes! We've been getting some profs encouraging their pre-serv social studies Ts to participate in #sschat which has been awesome! So many fabulous new Ts on the way! #nt2t
Yes. Sometimes it’s hard to get past the self-promotion on Twitter, whether it’s of work or ideas, to have a meaningful conversation ABOUT those ideas. So maybe it’s more about understanding that not everyone is able/wants to have a discussion & learning who does want to. #nt2t
Constantly. It's a 24/7 multi-thread monster -- in a good way. Just this morning there's been talk about coffee, bacon and the women's march. Yesterday there was talk of women and girls shafted in STEM. I think the word is eclectic. #NT2t
A5 Look for the postives: learn from others, engage in conversations, ask the #edu Qs to a tremendous base of users with knowledge & share w/Ts not on @Twitter#nt2t
Q5) What are some tips for adapting to Twitter culture (as an educator or otherwise), when working or living in an environment of non-Twitter users? #nt2t
Voxer! Actually, been on there for a while but have been using it more in last year. Set up group w/ another world hist T for Ts to chat about redesigning how we teach WH, share resources, etc. Been AWESOME! #nt2t

I think that is wonderful! Just the thought that undergrads can find mentors from around the world who will support them on their journey brings goosebumps to me! #NT2t
Haha, I absolutely remember that feeling, of being so busy and overwhelmed! Someone told me at the time that I had the most free time I was ever going to have in my life...I didn't believe them until after I graduated and started working! #nt2t

It is very true. I think Twitter also needs to be 'sold' to them as something that can take as much or as little time as you want. I often did chats on the side while also writing papers, doing homework, or watching Netflix (oops!). #nt2t

Oh, I completely agree with that! My PLN is a mix of teachers who do that and educators who may not be in the classroom anymore and write, speak, etc. I had to learn who wants to tout their newest X and who wants to talk about and share T and Ss success. #nt2t
Yes! Although I've let it slide as of late. But the great thing about Voxer is it's JUST conversation. No follower count; no public presentation. #nt2t
Before we go our separate ways, a big THANK YOU to everyone for participating today. Here's a picture from Disney World of a tiger cooling off, because you're all so powerful and all so cool. #nt2t
That is such a good point!! I think that would be a great way to frame it to undergrads. Although now FB is turning into an 'old person' social media... #nt2t
