#2PencilChat Archive
The #2PencilChat is a weekly conversation about educational technology. As we enter a more student-centered age, let's talk about using all the tools in our toolboxes to be innovative and dynamic teachers.

Welcome to the - we're talking about engaging students as individuals instead of as robots. Say hey! https://t.co/pX39blMPGE
Hey!
(Sean in St. Augustine, FL, 3rd grade, ridiculous)
Hi all! Adam from Va. K-12 principal
Jay, Gimli MB. HS English, general raconteur
A1: let them assign roles in their groups (facilitator, time keeper, etc.)
A1: "Learning is a social act. However, not all social acts are learning." Me. Often.
A1: have them come up and explain/teach something
Hello ! Excited to join in!
Καλησπέρα! Τι κανείς; Καλά είσαι;
A1: switch it up: partner, small group, large group, independent
We encourage chatter, but focus on the fact that we are there to learn. Talk should be in service of that.
A1: Pair w/ a quiet S to coach in what to say.
A1: I need to reread the section of last book about speaking.
A1. Provide boundaries around their contributions but ensure that they are valued
A1: Engage with them 1 on 1 or in smaller group so others can have the floor in whole class setting.
A1: use discussions, socratic seminars, book clubs where talking is part of the learning
Maintain value, for sure!
https://t.co/IQ9sUWXh4u
A1. Provide boundaries around their contributions but ensure that they are valued
A1: we talk about introverts/extroverts and how to share time in discussions, invite people in, etc.
A1) Always had an announcer, special roles w/unique titles, professors, speakers, had girl group back up singers, etc
All about Socratic seminars https://t.co/r8bl9KKPXK
A1: use discussions, socratic seminars, book clubs where talking is part of the learning
Self aware learners are more effective!
A1: Some research suggests hand raising is a bad idea. So if you're always calling on random kids, it mitigates some of this.
Added bonus of Greek school after full day🙄 I never use it, I'll teach you 😊
A1: I feel confident dealing with the talkers (I can be one.) I need to figure out ways to pull in their opposites!
A1: Also, talk about the CC stan. that talks about getting others involved. Often heavy talkers are interested in excelling.
You could have a hype man (or woman), too. Every Chuck D needs a Flava Flav!
Hello ! Cathy, edtech specialist in NYC. Signing first day paperwork for and .
For sure! They kinda show up at the end of the chat. Kinda.
I'm a talker too, usually have a conversation w/ them, get off track 😊
A2. Present them with real world issues and have them find solutions. Let them find their own paths and guide them when stuck
There's a track? Oh man. That explains a lot.
A2: In ELA, stuff that gives them tools for decoding the ambiguous things...like poetry.
A2: Even super "right brained" activities can appeal to log. Ss if we focus on research & planning.
And the more sophisticated their problem solving, the more fun it is to obfuscate and add tricky parameters.
Much dislike from poetry comes from this group, also key to model that logic isn't always there, and that's okay!
Hey just dropping in briefly am relieving teacher 2day got no class ATM but on my iPhone could be tricky!
YES! Back up singers had to sing their responses, shy at first but embraced it quickly
Ooh, it would be fun to have them color code the rhyme schemes in hiphop/song/poetry.
And how many songs are MADE by the backup singers?
A2: Whenever there are problems in the classroom, it's great to have the logically minded kids create solutions
'I forgot to tell you about the secret radar gun that destroys your creation... Sorry' https://t.co/jPuevCOTh4
And the more sophisticated their problem solving, the more fun it is to obfuscate and add tricky parameters.
That's evil and I love it!
A2: Critical thinking can be an exercise in logic as well. Discovering why a thing is the way it is!
What on earth......stepped away and came back to this.
I like to give Ss contradictory and broken ideas and get them to talk me out of them.
Q3 You've got kids who can't stop moving. How do you turn that into an asset instead of a liability? https://t.co/DxxX4dzd5v
Kevin a Teaching Principal in Ireland with Irelands first and only school STEAM Room
A3: flexible seating (yoga balls), standing, lounging on floor
A3: fidget toys and stress balls
A3: There has to be some freedom. If you're part of the learning, feel free to roam around our space. Or a thinkin' walk.
A3 In my classroom, we have an exercise bike that generates electricity, and plugs it back into the system.
A3: as long as they're learning, not bothering anyone, I pretty much let them do what they need to do.
Don't mind us, we're staying on track!
A3: brain break with running, jumping jacks, yoga stretches
A3. Consistent access to tangible items
A3 Have students create dances to demonstrate the learning that they've been doing.
A3: Assign them jobs in the room. Give them freedom to move around while they work as long as they are productive.
Hi all! Lisa, ESE support, diving in late tonight. Been behind all day. Late night watching last night.
A3. Those wiggle worms are my go-to for turning lights off & on, errands, leaders of brain breaks!
The Ss had all their socks neatly piled for a sock drive and it looked too fun NOT to jump in..... PRICELESS
A2: Concrete problems, not abstract ones
A3: music a lot, let them dance
If you have to live with it, learn to use it!
A3: If there is time where they need to be seated & still, cool, but that ain't all the time... is it?
I am one of those wiggle worms, I probably drive them nuts sometimes too!
Yeah - no specific answer is a good frustration point for the logicians!
A3: Taking reading time outdoors has been great for kids who love to move--they can spread out, readjust, and fidget
One could qualify by saying an answer that satisfies your curiosity, or sumpin' like dat.
A2. Hoping some both digital and physical will hook them!
Best scene of that movie!
A3: Unless your desk/tables are bolted to the floor, move 'em from time to time. Let it flow, yo!
Oh, gosh, I should write an grant for a class kit!
Q4 You've got kids who find that building things is super rewarding. Let's give 'em what they want! https://t.co/x6hz4PWBDb
I've forgone assigned seats this year, it doesn't work with each class, but it's working so far with this one.
Our students forget most of what we teach them. They will remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them
I move my room all the time!
A3 I let those kids lead brain breaks. Gives them a chance to get up and move and lead others.
If I do a app for it, I'll send you my write-up.
A1. Set up the space to let them work together.
A3: Kids can also get up to record bird observations whenever they like--we practiced doing this unobtrusively
A3: Gained some xp w this today. Picked battles, and tried to keep the movers contained, not still https://t.co/iYqI78o3yE
Q3 You've got kids who can't stop moving. How do you turn that into an asset instead of a liability? https://t.co/DxxX4dzd5v
I made it home before the chat is over this week. Amber, Clermont, FL dropping in for the last few moments!! Missed you all!
I haven't for years. If it gets assigned, it's cuz there's been a negative impact on the learning in the room.
A3: It was like they needed to move to process, so I let it go
what was in those boxes? Curious?

My humour tweets would read better if I were willing to use emojis, I know.
A4. Cardboard challenge, or have them design cell phone holders out of tp tubes (for BYOT).
That's part of the fun!!!!!!! It's like the moving staircases in Harry Potter.
A4: "I don't care how you show me what i want to see..." Me. Often.
OMG! HOWDY AMBER!!!!!
https://t.co/8qyD0OjjvN
I made it home before the chat is over this week. Amber, Clermont, FL dropping in for the last few moments!! Missed you all!
A3) lot of to get the wiggles out this year with my littles. , , and keep em movin'
I got an EdCamp Grant and that's what I am using it for!
See! THIS is why people say school isn't like the Real World!
Cardboard challenge. I would win. I am the master. LOL
Hey buddy.Stressful start to the year. New added job duties and no extra time in day! I miss this! https://t.co/wlMWUgxpq7

Hey, girl! How's it going?
A3: I had the kids moving today upfront. Might have avoided the wiggles in doing so Still not sure how to leverage that. :/
Too much fun. Not giving it up. We need an element of magic in school!
Great, thanks! Just need more hours in the day :) You? Can't wait till to see everyone https://t.co/77TLviQLxT
Hey, girl! How's it going?
This is very interesting and cool! Was it hard to do this?
I'm excited because my kids are meshing rather well this year. I needed that!
A3: We use our boards as common space for ideas, so we sometimes need to get up to read, add to, etc. Subtle, but good.
You're not stifling my curiousity
Same here and I can't wait either!
This person is my kinda people!
Used and today. They were wiggly.
Whoops sorry just chatting with a few colleagues now I've totally lost the plot
That is AWESOME.So many great things can happen when that "mesh" is natural. BTW, LOVING your doodles! https://t.co/PFhDWADNP7
I'm excited because my kids are meshing rather well this year. I needed that!
I meant.....for real....not snarky.....I have no idea what started in them, used to move Ts to diff rooms
I got a grant for it. It doesn't make much NRG. I'd say get an ex. bike @ a garage sale or on craigslist instead.
Can you text me this? Great example!
A4: As people were getting rid of old math manipulatives, I stockpiled them. Mwahahaha! All of the unifix cubes!
Did someone say magic? Hey is here?
Highlight of day is my peer mentoring going on between 7th grade and K-3 Ss with coding and robotics. Such great interactions!
I love Magic Flying Boxes! My favourite
Nay Ho Leslie!
& scope away!
A5: Well, if you love you could have your Ss analyze a whole album, and write pieces inspired by it.
My room is full of magic!
A5. Set a time limit & play Taylor Davis radio (gamer music) while they create. Play more mellow music during research.
A5: analyze song lyrics (really fun)
I would have expected that
How 'bout designing the cover while listening to the music for which to design
A5: When I taught Art, we did one song sketches. Length of the song was the time you had to sketch. Need to adapt for ELA!
A5. Colleague of mine had students create playlists for their lives
A kid told me today we get messy and it's very bright. LOL
A5: I love music transitions--I've got a playlist of 2-4 minute songs kids can pick from
A5 Music writing programs and real physical instruments are crucial for making new songs!
Beatboxing lessons, too.
Playing Scoot to music is always a treat.
that's like musical chairs but it's musical drawing! Love it!
A5 Song is just another way to present material
Sign that you are doing the right thing
Who said that only one person could? That's some wrongheaded mess you're talking.
Ooh. I like that.....hmmmmmm.......
Ooh! Love that! (Totally stealing!)
I've been stockpiling scores, thinking about using pieces to establish moods for quickwrites.
Ok......I will share......
I need lessons in beatboxing!
go right ahead! Anything for the kids!
- taught me more about Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers than HS ever did.
A5: I do protest song stuff whenever I can.
It's been fun but my son is beckoning me to play with sticks and swords--bye! Have a great week!
It would be neat to do collaborative pieces like that too.
A2) Ss would rap multiplication facts, create a beat and read their story to class, do a hip poetry open mic night production
I'm glad you're being kind, but the spread of magic is it's own beast!
Love it. Love incorporating music.
Paper beats rock, Sticks & swords beat the (You're following the natural progression of things!)
Imagine if we had a wand fight? I wonder who would win?????
I've got a half-concocted idea using scores around titling the tracks. Stranger Things has been inspiring!
I don't mess with wands. My powers are based in L-O-V-E. Ain't no fightin'. It's a build up, not a beat down.
I need to download that soundtrack for school!
A6: Same as seating, Ss make choices, unless choices are hampering the learning.
Would love a magical wand fight though. It would be fun.
Not recommended for when you're alone at school.
A6 random walk around touch 3 chairs, 2 tables, I window freeze - now pick the 3 closest people to you-
A5) I always use music as my work timer."You have two songs to finish up." Use lots of (Vitamin String Quartet) LOVE
A6. Stand up hand up pair up. Random name draws. Sometimes just let kids choose.
A6. Have them practice in some fun team building activities and then reflect on what strategies they used to help each other
A6: My default setup is "talkie tables" two tables together, Ss facing. Groupings often draw from that. I watch, & encourage.
A6: either strategic or let them pick
I've been using to encourage team supportive behavior. It's neat to watch the kids help their mates.
Also about not letting no one stop you from what you want to accomplish in life. Believe in YOU! https://t.co/7R29Bs1bxd
A5: Last year we tried with . Here's a Ss music video with an original song https://t.co/2fpNmaVNDa Leave a comment?
I LOVE doing that! They realize QUICKLY the important of communication.
A6) Believe in fate, Ss pick color popsicle sticks, sometimes complementary colors, or matching etc. https://t.co/wJbpn5XYIl
Gotta feed my kids Great chat tonight! Thanks!
I'm lurking - happy to see you all!
A 6 Sometimes I pick the groups sometimes they pick their own but I always give them the option to work by themselves
. It turned out to be an ear worm!
Darn it! I forgot because I was thinking it was Monday! I love those three-day weekends but they mess me up!
Working alone should always be an option.
Q7 Some kids work best on their own. Do we always give 'em that choice? If not, how do we support them? https://t.co/6SjlA12Xiz
A6. 9 stand up. Pick someone sitting down.
Hurricane day (inconsequential on our side of the state) made it a four day weekend!
Also, popped out of a couple times to watch my oldest take her first solo spins on the bike without them training wheels!
A7 yes but be supportive even if they are headed in the wrong direction
And it's okay, you can make an archive on , and we still love you anyway!
this def works. Have seen a lot like this. I've used the numbers in decks of cards as well for random grouping.
A7: ask them how they learn best, offer diff options throughout year, will always have to collaborate for some things
A7: As a S who often resented being 'stuck' with someone who wouldn't help, I have always allowed S choice of working alone.
This was lovely friends! Thanks for a nice relaxing chat!
A7 Stand up if you want to work with a buddy. I like giving options. Some days we just need some me time.
Gotta go it was great chatting see ya next time :)
Maybe that yasss was too enthusiastic. I just dug all of the variability in your plan.
And maybe, so what?
:)
At first glance I read this as Chatter Miss Litterbox. I might need glasses.
Allow them to work alone if that's their choice. Always leave the door open if they want to be in a group.
I like that book even better!
Thanks for coming! I love your gif game. :)
Perfect! I'm gonna be Steven Universe this year.
A7: I offer the choice as often as possible but some tasks are best done with a partner or a group.
