7pm "School/Classroom Visitors and Lasting Impressions” spread the word
-
Let’s chat about School/Classroom Visitors and Lasting Impressions for those who come into our learning spaces.
-
Asst principal, Kodiak MS. I’m looking forward to my students having more tutorial and foundation time. Every day counts!
-
Q1 What role do visitors/volunteers/presenters play in your classroom/school?
-
A1 So important to share what is going on in our school by having people come through and be a part of the school.
-
Hi! I'm the Principal at and I want my teachers to take the time teaching what they wouldn't have been able to before
-
A1 they enhance learning and our learning environment, AND help ends meet
-
Nathan Adams, SPED, Juneau
-
Q2 How do you utilize visitors when incorporating place based learning?
-
A1 presenters, visitors and volunteers is a rarity in special ed. Usually just grad students looking for a class to practice on
-
A2 I've seen some great opportunities for our locals to show the skills they know in our school. Sci class made salve naturally.
-
A1, last year I had local attorneys come by to discuss persuasive writing.
-
that's an interesting perspective with a big state university in town
-
I don't know that I'd call UAS, with a pop of ~1000 students big, but the main draw to the campus is teacher ed.
-
one of the biggest teacher programs in Alaska. It’s not just a satellite campus.
-
A2 My guest speakers have always represented some part of the community and offered local perspective.
-
I think it might be the largest teacher prep program in terms of number of graduates.
-
A2 good job, I think it's this is important with as much turnover as most Alaska schools have
-
Love enhancing skills with guest speakers. Just hosted visit by retired scientist who worked on space station. Very engaging.
-
Q3 How do you and your school encourage visitors/volunteers/presenters to come into your school?
-
A3 offering coffee and popcorn. Seriously, people like to feel appreciated and little things help.
-
A3 Our cultural specialist shares a list and helps coordinate bringing elders into our schools.
-
Have classroom teachers in your schools had much success with Skype/Facetime/Hangouts with celebrity guest speakers?
-
A1: IMHO 1 of most imp things sch visitors do is hear and see the stories that need to be told abt what's really happening in schs
-
Agreed. https://t.co/K0gWHhRpmB

-
A3 we really try to make it easy, no special paperwork or anything like that. Visit classes with visitors and thank them.
-
Ooooh ... virtual guests are an important consideration! Do we also make them feel important?
-
A3 we try to encourage time in the day to spend doing things like including community members in teaching i.e. tutorial time.
-
I think so, but it's a different kind of connection.
-
A3: Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and Thank You cards
-
A1 visitors can also enhance by bringing real world experience into the classroom
-
used distance learning tools to connect with the space station, and Australian school, and others. Students love it, you?
-
only used it once, supporting a regular Ed class connecting with a book author.
-
A3 recognizing volunteers through rewards is also a great way to do so
-
Tried skyping with a scientist who had previously visited in class, but experienced bandwidth issues.
-
Skype usually works when nothing else does, bummer...
-
A3 We give them an opportunity to participate in our different tutorials, which is just a 2-week commitment.
-
Hey I know your product is still a beta, but twice now tweets that are occurring are not showing up in PL webapp
-
yeah, that takes some practice and time to figure out logistics
-
In Juneau, when that happens get off wireless and switch to ethernet. Shouldn't have too many bandwidth issues wired
-
A4 Visitors absolutely improve community climate. They help to keep learning real.
-
-
What are your "tutorials"?
-
-
As a specialist I can't control the schedule so no flexibility on my part.
-
A2: Visitors in are a natural if the project is authentic.
-
A4 We value our visitors, but sometimes it can be hard to track who is in the building in a meaningful way. Hours logged?
-
Ha! Felt pretty gd abt stayin caught up with podcasts once found -let alone get all way back 2 Ep 1!
-
Q5 How do you facilitate visitors/volunteers coming into the school? Do you take feedback, surveys?
-
A4 Absolutely helps! They get to see firsthand what we are doing!
-
A5 Would b cool 2 have a Google Form on iPad waiting 4 visitors/volunteers when they sign out @ the office & a piece of candy :)
-
A5 we don't, but we probably should. Great idea!
-
A5 and I are having fun using at for front office checkins. Good analytics feature.
-
have a stack of the paper printouts of the form next to it, I find many people still more likely to respond to paper.
-
could we put a survey into ???
-
-
Q6 Do you or your school track visitor data? How does that data inform instruction and school management?
-
Q4 Do visitors/volunteers help with community climate or does it present more challenges than it is worth?
-

-
Q4 Do visitors/volunteers help with community climate or does it present more challenges than it is worth?
-
A4: Visitors/volunteers help w community climate when supported w genuine appreciation.
-
A6 Our school collects data on visitors but it doesn't change my instruction.
-
what ways do you show appreciation, anything special? special recognition?
-
do you ever see that data? review the data? compare to your peers? set goals for this sort of thing?
-
Genuine warmth in person & TELL them WHY what they did is appreciated not simply "thank you" or blanket statements
