Welcome, coaches to the Tuesday night #swarmfbchat Let's check in and say HI. Follow someone new tonight. Be sure to use our hashtag in all tweets. Like/Retweet as much as you want!
Feel free to ask questions to coaches who tweet something you like... We will use Q1/A1 format. All Qs asked on the 7s. Talking film breakdown/planning for position coaches - sent in by fellow #swarmfbchat follower.
A1 first look at personnel Who is the â dudeâ that can ruin the game. working with DB we then look formations tendencies, next concepts next individual routes then over all skill sets perimeter blocking , top of stems ball security #swarmfbchat
A1: as a Linebackers coach Iâm watching the guards and blocking schemes. Need to be prepared for those inside guys to play downhill. Outside guys, looking for cracks, boot/counter/reverse plays. #swarmfbchat
Easiest and most profitable fundraiser in the business!!! Earn $10 per container! 80 players sell 10 containers you profit $8k every 4 months. #fundraiser#swarmfbchat
Start with overall talent level. Can we cover him with 1 guy. Then look for any tells to give away any of what they are doing. Then how does he compare to.theor best player. Do we have to do anything special to stop one person. #swarmfbchat
While breaking down the video, we had specific tasks based on Position group... DL coach looked at (charted) blocking schemes... DB coach at (charted) route combination.. All involved in breakdown... detail process in this post ... https://t.co/x8M0qhIg4r#swarmfbchat
Pretty broad question. To start off I look at Personnel used and Formations out of those groups to start. Want to get an idea of what groupings they use and what formations they line up in. #swarmfbchat
A1: When I've been a DL coach, I look for gaps in pass pro and the weakest link on O-Line. With LB's, I look for the best place to key, based on game plan and opposition. #swarmfbchat
I look for their weakest player and try to attack him on the offensive line! I coach dline so Iâm looking at the guards to see if they are light on their hand so we know whoâs pulling. #swarmfbchat
A1: Watch OL stances, splits looking for tells. Also watch blocking schemes to see how they are going to attack us. Also try and pick out things/blitzes they struggle with. Then look at backfield action and routes run that MLBâs will have to deal with. #swarmfbchat
A1: For D-line, I look at the starting o-linemen, whom they want to run behind, who is the lineman we can attack most successfully, and then in what gaps I can put my guys to slow down their top runs. #swarmfbchat
A1. As a RBâs coach, I look at which players we can juke and which players we can run through. Who to block when we stay to block or have to go out and block. NG position- how can we beat or hold double teams, how can we beat the O-linemen on 1-on-1 situations. #swarmfbchat
A1: I really try to figure out what are they trying to do and with who. Who is their guy? Everyone looks for patterns, but I really try to focus on things that are different and figure out why they are doing that. Also what did the D do well that they are playing.#swarmfbchat
Biggest thing I focus on is who do they want to feed the ball, formations that tip off what is coming and what are the 3-4 things the team hangs their hat on. Must stop that, and then attack weaknesses up front or pass/run game. We must dictate, not other way around #swarmfbchat
A1) Iâm looking to find the worst player on Special teams first , then the Guard who cheats when he pulls and then the worst DB because the 9 is going at him early
#swarmfbchat
As WR coach I look for coverage markers, db checks, and lb alignments. Then look for tendencies. As DL coach, look for base run blocking schemes, then weak points in protection #swarmfbchat
A1: As a DC there was a lot! As DB coach Iâm looking at WRs takeoffs, splits, fav routes, catch points, how he blocks, his effort when he doesnât get ball, his feet... #swarmfbchat
A1 - Formations & the frequency of which plays are ran out of each formation / down & distance. Also body posture of the RB during Pass vs Run plays #swarmfbchat
#swarmfbchat A1: learn block scheme, look for weakness, match my big to there little, my tall to their short, try to figure out who they key, and run our defense so we dictate what they run. #DLine4life
A2: For example; we look at depth of RB or QB in pistol/gun/single back; We look for body language of WRs on run plays; low butt of OL for pass/pull. #swarmfbchat
A1: Find the worst player on the field or the weakest players. How do they try to hide them or cover them up. How can we take advantage offensively and defensively. #swarmfbchat
A2) We always went by formation first. Favorite play out of each formation. Then try to figure out why they are using that formation to run it. Common plays between formations that we know they like and we need to prepare for. #swarmfbchat
A1) For DBs, i draw every route combination for the field and boundary.
Also draw every route and where the WR stems, and use that to establish the deck
#swarmfbchat
A2: I want to know who the âmanâ is. I heard a HOF coach at a clinic once say âwe run the MAN offense, as in, get your man the ball.â So as a D guy, I want to know who the man is. You wanna be the man, youâve got to beat the man! #swarmfbchat
Not so out of the box but fieldzone / hash tendencies alway yield great info. Take the time to look at comeout O as well as adjustment O . Practice an adjustment period where D must react to a scout O 2nd half adjustment #swarmfbchat
A2) As a staff the most important thing we did was assemble the "ready list" ... this post describes the process... https://t.co/l885ampwDr process of "storming, norming, performing"... but we all got on the same page #swarmfbchat
In years past we meet right after home games (play on sats @ home) review tape, then go right to next opponent and then meet again Sunday. Saturdays are a grind. Try to find certain tips that give away what they are doing ex:back depth or angle, wr splits, etc #swarmfbchat
A2: Not really sure it's out if the box, we try to find the weak link and the stud. What do they want to do? Top run/pass. Down and Dist tendency, favorites by formation. How does the QB throw the deep ball? Things like that. #swarmfbchat
A2: We look for alignment of backs and tendencies from those alignments. Also look for leaning or hand placement of OL when they pull or downblock. #swarmfbchat
A2: I look at who our 3 or 4 game changers (GC's) are lining up against, and then identify the offensive players who are GC's. Do base alignments put is in good position to match their GC's and favorite plays? If not, how can we adjust them to put in our favor. #swarmfbchat
A2. One thing we like to look at is how do other teams have success at stopping our opponent. What kind of fronts or blitzes gave them troubles.
#swarmfbchat
A2: One team had a guard who had right arm down when pulling right and left arm down when pulling left. Our nose slanted towards the pull and blew up plays in the backfield. #swarmfbchat
A2) As a staff, we find their favorite plau call on either hash, inside the 35, and 3rd down
Rhen we find the kid that gets a lil chippy... and may send our Mouth that way every so often
#swarmfbchat
A2: Love finding small tells, i.e. WR in Tight Bunch only looks to inside presnap if heâs pulling into hole as a blocker...devilâs in the details
#SwarmFBChat
Not so out of the box but fieldzone / hash tendencies alway yield great info. Take the time to look at comeout O as well as adjustment O . Practice an adjustment period where D must react to a scout O 2nd half adjustment #swarmfbchat
A2) One thing we I like to do is chart QB throws. Look at his accurate he his on his throws in certain zones and really look at his % percentage on 10+ yard passes. I will see QBâs completing 65% of passes but itâs all screens #swarmfbchat
A2) We look at the WR usually the boy language and stance tells run pass. Even for RPOs. If itâs not a true pass play most the time heâs heâs not going 100% #swarmfbchat
A2) We played a Wing-T team that was better than us in the playoffs but we learned that 100% of plays, where the QB opened up to, the ball was going. Held true on counters (reverse out) etc. All week in practice we repped our safeties rolling to the QB side. Awesome! #swarmfbchat
Q3: Is there a difference between stopping the team's best play vs best player? Can it be unrelated - where the best player is not involved in the best play? #swarmfbchat
A2 pass zone is a great piece of intel so many HS qbs fall into comfort zones. We also live scout tempo and cadence things you canât see on film . Often make a huge difference . #swarmfbchat
Has anyone found much value in hash tendencies? R/P depending on hash? Some coaches seem to put high value in it while others discredit completely?
#swarmfbchat
A2) if recovers are in stack instead of no.2 in slot, is it to run quick screens or push vertical route combos. Do the WRs crack or stalk block. Who wants to duck their head before contact on their defense #swarmfbchat
I look for field/boundary tendencies. I also look for lineman tendencies, which side they are going to most. Also look for sideline tendency to help with D/D calls. #swarmfbchat
A2: The usual formation, Run/Pass, Field & Boundary tendencies. I think it is important to know what the OC does on quick change of possessions. Is he aggressive? Does he try and score right away? Trick plays? #swarmfbchat
We always looked at 3 tendencies for each play 1) strong/ weak 2)wide/ short 3) left/ right... anything about 66% we considered significant #swarmfbchat
Has anyone found much value in hash tendencies? R/P depending on hash? Some coaches seem to put high value in it while others discredit completely?
#swarmfbchat
A3: I believe the best play can be one without the best player involved. Played a team last season, there best play was Power out of a heavy personnel. There best player was their WR though. He got the ball on quick game or jet sweeps. #swarmfbchat
Not R/P, but we see a lot of teams that are wide side teams which help us know where to put our athletes and how and where to bring pressures. #swarmfbchat
A2 : I look to see which players are in which formations, a lot of teams have Blocking TEs/ RBs , possibly even Mobile QB/ Passing QB. Also a lot of young WRs have tells pre snap Pass vs Run #swarmfbchat
A3: I believe the best play can be one without the best player involved. Played a team last season, their best play was Power out of a heavy personnel. Their best player was their WR though. He got the ball on quick game or jet sweeps. #swarmfbchat
A2 cont) If you have time or man power charting where the WRâs line up each time can give some plays away occasionally.
I also like to break up gap plays and zone plays and see where they like to run them to. Ie shade, 3 Tech, alley, soft edge #swarmfbchat
A3) Against a different Wing-T team, we set our strength away from their best player and called defense to stop him. Failed to accurately analyze that their best chunk play was Counter with him as a decoy. They hit us a few times on it. #swarmfbchat
At times yes, but I think focus on what hurts you more. You weigh if the play hurts you more or the player. I personally am stopping a kid I know that is just a difference maker vs a play or plays that they try to run. MUST BE SOUND EITHER WAY YOU DO IT #swarmfbchat
Q3: Is there a difference between stopping the team's best play vs best player? Can it be unrelated - where the best player is not involved in the best play? #swarmfbchat
Was it really your best play, or just the play you guys thought was best? I have found that we do that and other coaches we see mis-understand their best plays. #swarmfbchat
A3: It absolutely can be different. In a playoff game last season, the team we played abandoned their best play (G Power) to throw bombs to their best player (Wide Out). #swarmfbchat
A3: this is a GREAT question. I feel like your best PLAY is dictated by the game. If youâre running jet sweep and we canât stop it, thatâs your best play, even if your best player isnât involved. He may be your Qb handing it off. So, yes? #swarmfbchat
Q3: Is there a difference between stopping the team's best play vs best player? Can it be unrelated - where the best player is not involved in the best play? #swarmfbchat
A3:they can go hand in hand but if we can limit the dude then we will have a great chance at slowing the offense. If the dude is involved in the play make it where he can't get the ball and rep the play nonstop all week #swarmfbchat
A3) we always game planned against their top plays... if their best player did not show up as part of their top plays, then they probably were not using him very well... we also make sure game tendencies are holding up https://t.co/6ODGYpzTVc#swarmfbchat
A3: Why are they running the play and not using the player? Do they know who their best player is? Do they know what their best play is? Scheme both, and teach your kids #swarmfbchat
A3 - I think thats a week to week situation that you have to evaluate & scout, & ultimately make the best decision. I would say 90% of the time, the best player is involved in the best play tho. #swarmfbchat
#swarmfbchat A3: Usually best player is part of the best plays. I don't hype up players with my kids. I let them know they all bleed. We have to prepare for all 11 on the field. I put a plan together that I hope takes the offense out of their comfort zone, which leads to mistakes
A3) Yes Iâve had to stop power against an average RB that had a Solid O-Line , but the best player be the Dual Threat QB that you try to force to beat you Passing .
#swarmfbchat
A3) Good question. I think the answer can be yes and yes and 280 characters is not enough to completely answer your question. To simplify the answer players make plays. Stop the best player is the best way to defend it. #swarmfbchat
A3: Speaking from an offensive perspective, we want our best play or plays to be those that involve our best player or players. We try to simply it enough that our RBs and also line up at WR. With our low #s it gives us flexibility. #swarmfbchat
Q4: I thought this was a good one: Has there been a time where you watched an opponent and what you saw determined what you put into your practice plan during individual drills? What was it? #swarmfbchat
A3) Our best player has rarely been involved in our best play.
The stud is they guy they force the ball to. The best play is the one that the team runs perfectly as a unit, and is harder to stop
#swarmfbchat
A3 cont: separate rant - Iâve never understood coaches that go âThis is our best play! Live and die with it!â Well if youâre âbest playâ on paper is cov2 and theyâre killing you, why not switch and find your âbest playâ on that night? Stubborn coaching loses games #swarmfbchat
Q3: Is there a difference between stopping the team's best play vs best player? Can it be unrelated - where the best player is not involved in the best play? #swarmfbchat
A3) Can't the best play and the play you need to stop to win be completely different? I'll use the 1991 Super Bowl as an example. Belichick said that Thurman Thomas was the Bills best player, but he wasn't going to beat them so they let him have his yards. #swarmfbchat
A4: If receivers struggled vs physical play, we worked press in indy drills. If certain alignments or shifts were giveaways for plays we worked those as our reads #swarmfbchat
A4: I recall last year seeing a team do a nice job cutting on the backside of run...needed to get that drill into indi time and work it hard for the week. We just don't see that very often. #swarmfbchat
A4. Yes. DL coach works his guys vs teams that cut block. Iâll work my LBs on covering a back out of the backfield or seeing pullers. Sec works vs routes.
#swarmfbchat
A4: Absolutely. If we see an OL that likes to cut, we make sure our indi sessions for DL review defeating cuts. If WR really block well on screens, we will refocus on defeating stock blocks. Bootleg happy team we make sure backside contain knows his stuff. #swarmfbchat
Forsure. If you are playing a unique offense you have to adapt your drills to the gameplan. Canât do W drill or high points all week if the team is 90% run. Stop what they do well #swarmfbchat
Q4: I thought this was a good one: Has there been a time where you watched an opponent and what you saw determined what you put into your practice plan during individual drills? What was it? #swarmfbchat
A4) Our drills/ practice plan (and scout script) each day/week should translate to performing better again our opponent THAT WEEK.. that is part of good practice planning and position group work ... https://t.co/mMfhJ9nZQj#swarmfbchat
A4: yes! If theyâve got some nasty dudes at guard weâre working on block defeat. If theyâve got a dude that can sling it, weâre working pattern reading, route combos, etc. you have some every day ones like tackling but generally your week is dictated by opponent #swarmfbchat
Q4: I thought this was a good one: Has there been a time where you watched an opponent and what you saw determined what you put into your practice plan during individual drills? What was it? #swarmfbchat
A4: Perhaps I'm not understanding the question. Shouldn't what you see on film naturally determine what you put into your practice plan for the week? If they like trap, then I'm working wrong arm all week. #swarmfbchat
A4). That is how we approach each week. For our scout period we will focus mainly on top formations/top plays. However we create key cards which are things they do that could create problems for us. We use INDY/Group time to work on those key cards. #swarmfbchat
A4: Outside of playing an air raid team and working 7 on 7 more, same goes with power teams and inside run. Yes we have, maybe its podding up with DEs to work jet/ power read one week, or working motion adjustments on our own, shed blocks vs WRs and FB r different. #swarmfbchat
#swarmfbchat A4: aside from our daily fundamentals, I plan our individual time during game week based on our opponents strength, it's a good time emphasize what they run and show them how the drill helps to stop them.
A4: Make sure DBs are working routes weâll see. If we have a heavy pull team we will work more drills seeing those pulls. Played a heavy screen team last year so we tried to simulate that the best we could. Give our DL a feel for when screen was coming. #swarmfbchat
Q5: Can you give us an idea of what film breakdown looks like for each position coach? Who is looking for what? What responsibilities does each coach own in watching film? #swarmfbchat
A4 - Absolutely, defending the option is a big one. Just reviewing who has who on the pitch. Also, seeing a pass heavy team, reviewing zone drops/ 7on7 #swarmfbchat
A2: How physical are WRs? Who likes contact? Who wouldnât bust a grape in food fight?
Do receivers fire off the line every play or only when itâs a pass?
#swarmfbchat
A5: Our position coaches really focus on seeing fundamentals in the game. Stance, alignment, eyes on read, first step, hand placement, same foot same shoulder, etc. I am really looking more at overall scheme and what went wrong or right to see what to fix. #swarmfbchat
A5: I ask DL coach to look for pass pro/blocking scheme; LB coach looks for Personnel/Packages/Sub Patterns; DB coach for fav routes/alignment/athleticism #swarmfbchat
A5). DL coach = pass protections. LB Coach = Run Plays/Fits. DB Coach = Pass Concepts/Routes. If you have more guys you can get more detailed in your breakdown. #swarmfbchat
A5: I watch film to help the Varsity on Friday night. I get a feel for how the other team is gonna call plays and also get formation tendencies. Helps me provide good feedback for defensive calls on Friday Nights! #swarmfbchat
DL: Slide pro/Bob? What formations tip what they do up front? Who is their weakness? Who is their guy? LBs: Pullers/OL ability to get to second level as well as threats over middle DBs: Splits, WRs ability to separate/Willingess to block DC: ALL OF THAT and some #swarmfbchat
Q5: Can you give us an idea of what film breakdown looks like for each position coach? Who is looking for what? What responsibilities does each coach own in watching film? #swarmfbchat
Each position coach looks at their reads/ oppo player to get a feel. We are a small staff, so everyone has a breakdown/ game plan job. Looking into really utilizing Google Docs for collaboration. Glazier had a great webinar in the vault about this last summer. #swarmfbchat
A5: secondary coach does pass plays and I take care of the rest. We have what we call our GA(a former player going to college tomteach and coach)and he will do D/D, hash, Field, all the tedious columns on Hudl. #swarmfbchat
A5: Nothing revolutionary on our end. The 5 defensive coaches each take two or three columns. When that's done, we each watch our position, then come together later and discuss our ideas. We are very roundtable about gameplanning. #swarmfbchat
A5: Been on staffs that just churn up film (hash, d&d, etc) and then the HC/DC tells you what your focus is.. also been on staffs with a lot of autonomy. Donât tell me about the labor, show me the baby. Make sure your position is ready, donât care how you get there #swarmfbchat
Q5: Can you give us an idea of what film breakdown looks like for each position coach? Who is looking for what? What responsibilities does each coach own in watching film? #swarmfbchat
I would post assistants in to different than their position group
DBs would check OL
RBs watch DBs
OC/DC watch all.
Everyone needs to know the entire gameplan at least in basic form. Full communication.
#swarmfbchat
Coaches - as we close tonight's #swarmfbchat, I'd like to thank you all for contributing. When a fellow coach asks for help, those are the chats I like the most. Hope you found something good out of tonight's chat.
A5). DL coach = pass protections. LB Coach = Run Plays/Fits. DB Coach = Pass Concepts/Routes. If you have more guys you can get more detailed in your breakdown. #swarmfbchat
A4) All the time . We have a full playbook , but we go into to the game planning on only running a few plays based on what we think will good against what we saw them do on film #swarmfbchat
#swarmfbchat A5: We meet as a defensive staff. Talk about what we want to focus. D.C. is good about telling us what he would like us to focus on and if we catch anything while we are watching incorporate into our plan. His philosophy is 2 heads our better then 1.
Since we are on the topic of film break down, how many of you guys do not meet? This is foreign to me. I try & meet too much. I saw one Coach in our state who says he does not meet on weekends and they had a great run. Also had a RB with 20+ offers. So that helps too #swarmfbchat
A5 - Unfortunately, Game planning & scouting for the week coming hasn't been our strong point this past year, I'm just here looking at answers for ideas of improvement this year #swarmfbchat
