https://t.co/2PCZkvtAWf
I am going to tweet a few answers to question one from my 4th graders
A1: Student: I think they are both equally important because without the journey you can’t get to the destination
A1 I find a destination more empowering. I like to have a goal. I do however enjoy celebrating the steps along the journey
Passionate, caring, centered, clever and loving
Fun! The sun went down here a couple of hours ago. Right on schedule! https://t.co/ZaSbDZKDwo
Hi, Elisa! I'm glad you are joining us this evening! It's still sunny in Oregon!
Resilient caring, passionate, imaginative, risk-taking
Great to be here! So excited for the chat.
Journey is more empowering because of the unknown unchartered places you can go.
A1) Journeys! I find most (of my) growth happens along the way.
Journey. You learn about yourself. Struggles, reflections, celebrations are all great teachers.
SA: Journey because you go somewhere. I think the journey is more fun because you get to see more things than just the destination
A1 The journey all adventures, disc, failures, successes happen on the journey. Growth is a result of the road taken.
Which means it will be setting here shortly after the chat!
Breck, AP from Texas. Hoping I can stay for awhile
Rosella elementary special ed St. Louis MO
A1: Totally the journey... I am a seeker. There is something magic in undertaking a journey.
A1: Journeys due to the lessons learned along the way. You become wiser along the path.
Journeys because I love the learning , the adventure , the creating along the way
SA: taking the journey to the destination would be the best part of the trip, that’s why the journey matters.
A1: Journeys! That's where the learning and growth live.
A1 I believe "the journey is the destination."
A1: For me, it's the destination. Luv reflecting on how it was possible. Being mindful, staying present, & celebrating the moment.
I enjoy the planning for the journey, too!
SA: Journey because without the journey you wouldn’t get any learning experiences, or you wouldn’t be able to reach your destination
A1-Journey. Once you reach a destination, you are done unless you start a new journey.
A1 Oz may be the destination but the curves & paths of the yellow brick road was where the action & lessons occurred.
Survivor, passionate, sensitive, driven, & searching.
Jumping in from MO! Hi everyone!
Yes, we can ultimately tell that these are difficult to disconnect. There may be one or the other that inspires.
A1: Journeys....love growth mindset and that mistakes are part of the journey..also that there are many ways to solve problems
a1 journies for sure, sometimes the best journies are the ones w/unknown destentations
I'm with you on this one! Enjoy the journey, but I need a road map
A1: My answer: The journey is my favorite part of the trip, I love to take detours, try new things, & I love the time together
I love all these Journeymen!
Forgot the intro first. Casey from Iowa. HS GT.
I really appreciate all of the viewpoints and insights here! I am learning so quickly! https://t.co/uKCsgbkyRs
A1: For me, it's the destination. Luv reflecting on how it was possible. Being mindful, staying present, & celebrating the moment.
A1: destination is where you can reflect upon the journey.
Q1 The journey-there are so many ways to get to the destination. My Ss are at many levels & need to find their way.
There can be great power in the detours we take on our learning journeys! https://t.co/0u7wBi6bxO
A1: My answer: The journey is my favorite part of the trip, I love to take detours, try new things, & I love the time together
Hi, Steve. Glad to be here tonight.
I am so inspired by the variety of answers and vantage points!
Gary from near Philly. Just jumping in. (I was on a long, and interesting journey... There. Two birds, one stone.
My S said that too: When you get to your destination you can reflect on all your new friends and places you been on.
Great analogy for my state! It's also about meeting amazing ppl along the way 😉
Hi, Gary! It's great to see you!
I LOVE that you are asking these questions of your STUDENTS! Way to go! https://t.co/zXfMKgdax7
My S said that too: When you get to your destination you can reflect on all your new friends and places you been on.
A1: Journey - did dot today and told Ss that I cared more about how they visualized the amt rather than the actual # answer
Yes. And their is joy in finding your own way. https://t.co/6xwyj0gs3o
Q1 The journey-there are so many ways to get to the destination. My Ss are at many levels & need to find their way.
A1 The destination is the vision or goals. The journey is the enlightenment found to reach them.
A1 Journeys. That is where the adventure lies. The unexpected finds. The risks. You could be on an expedition or a pilgrimage even.
A1 Definitely journeys. Destinations are celebrations, but journeys are the why and the how. They make the destinations satisfying.
Those twist and turns make learning more relevant to our Ss.
A1: The journey takes us in so many places we could not have predicted. Powerful learning can occur on the journey.
Wife, Mother, Gmother, creative, passionate, hard-working, energetic, teacher, southern woman.
I often find this challenging: to not rush the students toward a destination I have in mind. https://t.co/DbS60eUY4G
Don't want to rush students to reach their destination. The REAL learning occurs on the journey to that destination… https://t.co/2aF5n1wT13
wait...5 words!? um... Energized, Inspired, Designerly-minded, Researcher, someone once called me an "enigma", so, enigmatic
A2) Life outside of school has many paths. We get to equip our Ss to problem solve, think critically, reflect, & collaborate!
A2 Important for flexibility in problem solving & for Ss 2 see multiple paths to answer, & that often there is more than 1 answer
A1 I find that the journey is more meaningful. Opportunities to reflect and grow are ongoing
A2: it promotes great thinking. And there is no greater reward than encouraging such analysis among our stu.
A1: Laurie dropping in to from BC Canada. We need to enjoy the journey not focus strictly on the "destination".
Q2. Ss need to realize there are many ways to get "right answers" = success, happiness, pride, confidence, etc. so they never quit
A2a: Builds flexibility & creativity in thinking. Knowing there are many ways to solve a problem gives Ss a reason to dive back in.
A2- Ss need to see that we will let them try different approaches (paths) to learning. We need to model that for them.
A2 Teaching students that there are many paths to the correct answer encourages them to seek multiple options from the outset.
Q2: I think it's empowering to know that their way of thinking and problem solving is valid. We don't all process the same way.
Flexibility. Flexibility. Flexibility. We have to teach Ss to become flexible. As well as understanding of others POV.
A2: more than one path to an answer allows creativity and choice.
A1: by far, the journey. For there are many destinations, upon which struggles are not obstacles but rich moments of learning.
A2: Flexibility. Flexibility. Flexibility. We have to teach Ss to become flexible. As well as understanding of others POV.
Excellent point! It builds a classroom community where validation can be abundant. https://t.co/rqca6mD54p
Q2: I think it's empowering to know that their way of thinking and problem solving is valid. We don't all process the same way.
Yes, it can be a challenge. Long term projects make it more possible.
A2: For Math, showing various strategies to getting right answer encourages acceptance, diversity, develops flexibility of thought
A2 Learning is indiv it may have challenges, gravel & speed bumps or smooth sailing, newly paved but it is your path.
a2 incase one path is inacessible to some students
A2 There are many paths to the top of a mountain, but one beautiful view
A2 The initial path we find may very well not end up being our final path. That is important to communicate to our students.
A2b: For Ts, it is important to provide many pathways to make the learning more accessible.Levels the playing field & equal access
Ss need 2 know they can find their shine, want Ss 2 take risks Ss must know we live open mindset 4 Ss 2 take chances 4 learning.
A2 Flexible problem solving. Risk. Finding your own way of thinking about & doing a task. Reflection on what worked & what did not.
A2 many paths means discovery is part of the process. Surprise, novelty...these things too, and they create engagement & innovation
A2 Knowledge is gained differently depending on how you learn. Visual, auditory, tactile choose what is best for you
A2: In all aspects of life there is more than 1 path to the right answer. It's about the journey!
A2 Students learn differently. Differing paths ought to be encouraged and celebrated.
A2 An important understanding for all of our life is that we have choices, options, opportunities, that we can embrace.
A2: ttly agree about flexibility but also lets kids keep trying even after someone else gets it a different way.
So often Ss are kept in that box with only one way of doing things. Need to be able to express and find themselves.
A1: I love the power of the journey. The things you find along the way, the experiences that lead to the destination.
A2: Great minds do not all think alike... Students will find this true for the rest of their lives. It is true at school, also.
which provides an opportunity to keep looking, keep refining, keep seeking iterations of learning.
Q3 There may be many correct answers.
Whey is this an important message for our students to understand?
https://t.co/pzatuvvFbb
Well said, Dee! https://t.co/e7eJ0UqLys
A2: Great minds do not all think alike... Students will find this true for the rest of their lives. It is true at school, also.
I am wearing my Shine bracelet from . Reminds me to inspire and let others do so as well.
Where is the fun in that. We don't need cookie cutter Ss.
A3) I believe this ties directly into multiple paths on the journey. Honor the processes, celebrate the destinations!
The concept of many correct answers - not just a single correct answer - makes us really think about student thinking.
A3 They need to have flexible thinking and open minds to be global citizens.
A2: Being a future ready learner means being able to solve complex problems, be flexible, and be creative. Our world is complicated.
A3: Important 4 Ss to stay curious. With many answers, learning is continuous allowing Ss to focus more on big ideas
I need a bracelet! https://t.co/zHHAZ7a5By
I am wearing my Shine bracelet from . Reminds me to inspire and let others do so as well.
A3 The first answer is not the best answer - it's just the first.
We constantly reinvent.
A3: can focus on "does it make sense" NOT "is it on the answer key" so pushes reasoning and expressing justification
YES! and cases. When will this work again and not. developing understanding by comparing/analyzing strategy.
A3 There are (hopefully) many answers 2 the world's big challenges. Teaching Ss to look for many possibilities encourages creativity
Great point! How do we regard our own answers and conclusions?
Q3 There may be many correct answers.
Whey is this an important message for our students to understand?
https://t.co/HKwe82fLQE
A3; everyone has their own experiences & relationships with learning. What they think needs to be excepted and understood.
Yes, there are many answers for those who diligently pursue them. https://t.co/rjFuc4LdOb
A3 There are (hopefully) many answers 2 the world's big challenges. Teaching Ss to look for many possibilities encourages creativity
Q3. The right answer for them isn't necessarily the right answer for anyone else, and that's okay. Accept it and run with it!
A2 Seeing more than 1 path to an answer can create productive discourse and foster critical thinking
A3 Are there as many questions as there are answers?
A2 "I am here not to teach science but to teach you how to think for yourself." allows them to take-risks & seek new paths to travel
A3: Different thinking leads to different answers. Ss must be respectful of other ways of thinking and solve problems.
A3: We want kids to be problem-solvers. Ideally, real-life problems have multiple solutions-better odds for humanity.
A2: Many paths show that we all learn differently and that we have multiple ways to think about reaching the same target.
A3 When I talk my answer through , I often change my thinking, something someone else says may stimulate new thinking
A3) in English, there often ISN'T a right answer - it's all about the explanation/reasoning behind our ideas!
I think we should constantly be discovers of questions.
A3: may seem "catch" phrase but growth mindset is essential encouraging deep & thoughtful learning that crosses disciplines & ages.
For some reason I think may be in touch.
A3 This is especially true in ELA. If Ss defend their reasons, I accept a variety of answers when it comes to text interpretations.
The discussion on growth mindset is prevalent because it is so important. Thanks for bringing this up! https://t.co/iGtEHtn7IL
A3: may seem "catch" phrase but growth mindset is essential encouraging deep & thoughtful learning that crosses disciplines & ages.
Totally agree that more than 1 answer increases risk https://t.co/jZNR2hCg63
A2 "I am here not to teach science but to teach you how to think for yourself." allows them to take-risks & seek new paths to travel
A3 To help them create a growth mindset where knowledge & solutions are not fixed but fluid and numerous.
A3 Ss needs to see there are many gray areas too. Not one right answer, not one right way of looking at a situating or problem.
The Writing on the Classroom Wall.
One reason I much prefer open ended assessments. Reasonable ans. & Support with details from text
A3 Many correct answers= life. we live in the grey. But one should know metric conversions if an engineer and landing on Mars
It's too possible to overlook the importance of discovering and identifying problems that can be solved.
When Ss feel they will not be right or wrong they will seek a deeper answer & find multiple solutions
Let's chat about who are the creators of solution pathways...
A3: Our Ss often want to be "right". Need 2 help Ss see that there many not always be a specific answer & that process is important.
A3- Too many Ss are looking for that "one" answer so they can move on. Need to help them spark thinking.
In science and math I am looking for evidence and reasoning in students' answer
I love WODB problems in Math where 4 #'s or shapes are given and one doesn't belong...but there are reasons for each not to belong
A3 Your journey will lead you down roads that may not make sense to others. What really matters is if it makes sense & works for you
Super powerful when students move beyond recognizing multiple strategies into noticing how the strategies are related
By the way sorry for anonymously lurking, , I'm Rebecca, a HS math teacher in NYC.
A4) Each year, it began w/ me, then as the year went on it switched to my Ss!
Many answers encourages collaboration. 2 minds are better than 1...and 3 or 4 even more so
So -- ?s, etc.? I'll leave up to . Time is 7PM MT time. 9 my time. TWOTCW is great book!
There is something about "being right" that feels like it brings satisfactory closure. I wonder how to address.
absolutely!! One of the most important things we teach our S's.
A3: With true inquiry, there are many answers that ideally lead to more questions. Learning doesn't stop.
A4 solutions are collaborative all parties must be involved in resolving the issue and following the resolution
A4: primary creator needs to be the S and the T should guide them along the way until they are independent.
After a few examples my Ss take the lead, I simply offer a guiding hand
I totally agree. I've seen this many, many times. There is power here! https://t.co/lswdezem1p
Super powerful when students move beyond recognizing multiple strategies into noticing how the strategies are related
many Ss actually fear being wrong
Thanks, Gary! I appreciate the shout out for The Writing on the Classroom Wall! https://t.co/C1hBFVuYfQ
So -- ?s, etc.? I'll leave up to . Time is 7PM MT time. 9 my time. TWOTCW is great book!
One thing we can do - put student question first. How we elicit them, honor them, elevate them and respond to them.
Ts may inspire & inquire but the paths are made by Ss. Interest, engagement motivation, relevance are their roadmaps.
Discovers of questions...
https://t.co/w9cz1RnwI0
A3: With true inquiry, there are many answers that ideally lead to more questions. Learning doesn't stop.
and the look on Ss faces when they come to that realization is priceless.
A3- Used to preface open ended ?s with "Are you ready to take a risk?" Let kids know that there was more than one solution.
A4: traditionally the Ts...Ts need to switch from being "sage on the stage" to "guide on the side" to facilitate S learning
A2 Ss can have you unique ways of expressing themselves answers are not always black and white
That's great. It would be foolish not to. Our ss must have a voice as well. Critical thinking happens here.
The fear of being wrong can keep us from moving forward. It's worth the risk, but the fear is real.
A4 I like to think of myself as a guide and students as the creators.
when they realize they ARE mathematicians. Move from having to remember a strategy to confident they can figure it out.
A4. I'd like to think our Ss r creating pathways
in a centered classroom, students find problems, develop numerous solutions, and set own criteria f… https://t.co/qd0A5STL7S
A4 It depends. Ts, Ss, group collaboration. This should be as open as "right" answers.
A4 Ss should be the leaders as Ts guide them, yet some of our education structures make this challenging https://t.co/VGJ1c7q6L4
A3: Not only is it true, but this idea encourages Ss to take risks without fearing they might get a "wrong" answer.
My mouse battery died mid-chat! We must be on fire!
A4 Learning often comes from frustration Complacency stifles but grit & rigor enlightens Light the way but Ss need to carve the path
True even for adults. If the stakes are high, we will be afraid 2 take risks. https://t.co/6QyqgGuTPN
The fear of being wrong can keep us from moving forward. It's worth the risk, but the fear is real.
A4: I think of myself as tour guide, giving attention to certain stops, rooted in standards & assess., but stu help guide journey.
A4 The one that takes the lead, risks, & initiative w/out having to worry. Can be all ss eventually if comfort & trust is present.
Not if they can answer a q, not if they can answer it many ways, but when they know what the q is about.
It's nice to have my mouse working again!
A4: One of my Ss struggles this year has been adapting to having to think and find answers authentically. They want to be told.
A4 Tough question. I think the "learner" is the primary creator, it could the teacher or the student.
When we feel the pressure, we make play it safe... or we can choose the risk that leads to learning.
a4 it should be the students, sadly, that's not often the case
A4: I think it depends. Sometimes it's the Ts sometimes the Ss. Some things need to be flexible.
Need to bow out. See you during the week and next week! Take care all!
How do I handle the situation when the student has the answers?
A4 ideally the students create the pathways and teachers are the guides
I agree - it is a tough question. Well worth reflecting on! https://t.co/XfxKp1kEBq
A4 Tough question. I think the "learner" is the primary creator, it could the teacher or the student.
A5 Asking open-ended questions. Providing a lens for Ss to see the problem from multiple perspectives.
Great vantage point! Way to think widely!
Hi Mac from PA. A5:it really stems from the types of Q's being asked using those higher level DOK Q's leave you open for more.
A5) did this for me & my Ss. We got to inquire & question, & search. It helped make connections to other learning & life.
A5 Letting the "answer" be a springboard for the next question or topic for learning.
Great point! The questions we choose are very important in how we understand student responses.
Yes! They will still choose where they want to go, but we can help develop that path & be there to support when needed.
have to make that decision is tough but I always think - is this true because it is or because of convention?
A5: "What if we...? " Changing one detail in the task/question at hand opens up more possibilities. Real life is not static.
A4 Should be Ss w/support and guidance from T & other Ss.
Ss debated which organic compound is the most important Of course no right answer but an Insightful, engaging debate
A5: I love Number Talks in math because it isn't the correct ans that is impt, it's the variety of strategies to get there - flex
A5: Providing feedback (Glows & Grows) is valuable for growth mindset. all have things 2 celebrate & all have things we can work on.
I think exposing S's to real world problems/ situations and discussing multiple pathways to a solution is critical.
Within the real world problems we can discover complexities that really help us ask new important questions.
Q5 I try to get Ss to expand on the answer and if they think they can't, expand on the question so they can. Def frustrates at 1st
Number talks is a great example. https://t.co/BMNZvOfWqA
A5: I love Number Talks in math because it isn't the correct ans that is impt, it's the variety of strategies to get there - flex
A4: there are times I give big questions & times my Ss ask them.
The answer can become a springboard, a launchpad, rather than a dead end.
https://t.co/dveIekBhql
Q5 I try to get Ss to expand on the answer and if they think they can't, expand on the question so they can. Def frustrates at 1st
A5 Multiple perspectives. What did others see as the "right" answer & what path did they take to get there. Power of possibly.
It's a cyclical process that really empowers students and their learning.
It is sooo tough. And different from many P’s personal history with math. How did it go?
The Big questions are the ones I try to write on the walls so we can think deeply about them over time.
A5 I expand the questions to further critical thinking.
We can teach this cycle, too!
Help students realize that an answer leads to further opportunities.
https://t.co/VEmAQkcbDB
It's a cyclical process that really empowers students and their learning.
Let's talk about the impact on students...
A5 I discuss with Ss that I am seeking data on how they learn and how they reached the conclusion not the answer.
A5: Modeling our own thinking after we've "found" an answer. Showing students how it raises more questions/answers. Teach by example
or starting with situation (data or a picture) and eliciting Their questions about it. They own it from the start
A5: tough with MC & assessment-driven data, but encourage old-school journals. Collecting thoughts of journey honors individual
Dang - laptop charge at 2%. Must go.
Love this chat! Thanks all for the inspiration. Thanks for the terrific learning
How does the understanding that there is MORE beyond the answer impact the students...
A5 It's about the thought process. How can we use what we have learned to build something, create something, change something?
A5: That is a mind-blowing concept. Some of my Ss embrace it. Other's cringe.
You laptop outlasted my mouse battery!
A6) that's when my favorite things happen - we turn the class into a debate or a Socratic seminar & just go back & forth
All comes back to what we have taught them their job is in class.
A6 At first they are confused b/c they are not used to having options. They get nervous & need reassuring.
A6 It increases their odds of getting it right thus motivating them to preserve https://t.co/VooDFA1zds
Q6 What is the effect on the students when they understand that there is more than one answer to a question?… https://t.co/zklaH5xSdi
Helps them to see real world applications. Learning to learn and grow not just to memorize or find a solution.
A6) Ss have incredible insight & knowledge. We must trust & encourage them to grow outside "right answers".
A6 I love when students find an answer and then go back to find more - and then compare and evaluate their responses.
they realize that learning isn't isolated and a life long journey.
Q6. Ss become more open minded and confidence soars. Risk taking increases and working collaboratively gets easier.
A6. Usually relief, excitement and some confusion for the learner.
Great question! makes me wonder about teaching to learn this or teaching to be able to learn what’s next
There is so much more than just the answer!
We need students to learn that multiple perspectives apart from theirs exist. Therefore there are multiple answers
I might have to post this on my wall:
"Where does the answer lead us?"
A6 More than one right answer decreases the risk. Ss know thinking is valued.
A6: During math yesterday a Ss said, "I am going to ignore this strategy. My brain doesn't like it!"
A6 Once Ss feel safe to venture off the path to solve problems they will look for various paths in diff situations.
A6 More risk taking, deeper thinking, ownership of the learning process, seeing the power of multiple perspectives, challenging self
there is also more than one way to approach/see a problem from the start!
A3: It is all about worldviews. And the most pathetic worldview is where people think only they are entitled to a worldview
How can we get our students excited and intrigued and have a desire to solve the next puzzle?
A6: They need to be able to share their thinking and accept the thinking of others. The world is big!
I'd say it leads us to a good starting point
Teach by example https://t.co/bJu3LEXfqe
A5: Modeling our own thinking after we've "found" an answer. Showing students how it raises more questions/answers. Teach by example
A6 Opens Ss up 2 learning by leveling the playing field. Everyone has an equal opportunity 2 come up w/an answer they can defend.
A5: We need to stop having such an emphasis on grades. Grades stop the learning. Keep asking questions! And have them ask questions!
A6: some Ss love that there's more than 1 answer; others are uncomfortable & need a "right" answer
A6 Multiple sol leads to an open mind & adventurous spirit. I see my Ss grow every time I present them w/ unanswerable problems
Let's take it one level deeper and talk about the Q itself...
A6: they learn to respect multiple perspectives and understand that we all have something to contribute.
A6: My Ss love when I tell them they just taught me something by sharing their thinking. It reinforces that we are all Ta and SS.
A7 How does the value of the question change in the midst of a classroom community the seeks multiple pathways and answers?
A6: we don't just encourage thinking that solves puzzles, but thinking that identifies and designs puzzles.
A6. Ss r unprepared for multiple correct answers. What do I say now? I thought we were done
That's an interesting point, Amber!
A7) ?s become connections, not daunting, unsolvable puzzles. Ss gain confidence & ?s can really come to life!
Q7. It's no longer just a question, it's a door to exploration which leads to more questions.
Q7: The tone and structure of questions change when Ss know that what they are looking for is not 'answer' but 'prospectives'
A7 When there are many correct answers, the mindset changes, the Q becomes a springboard to launch Ss into new learning
What a great answer! Classroom culture empowers questions in some very, very important ways!
https://t.co/ig3RrVneot
Q7. It's no longer just a question, it's a door to exploration which leads to more questions.
A7: Multiple answers and paths puts Ss in the "challenge zone," one where they are uncomfortable, but able to learn and persevere.
Who learns more the one who asks the question or answers it?
Q7: The tone and structure of questions change when Ss know that what they are looking for is not 'answer' but 'perspectives'
I think this is a pretty challenging Q7 to end on.
A7. Qs should always lead to more Qs
A7: Some Ss are excited and empowered. Others are confused by the notion. They are addicted to being right.
A7 The question is impacted by the culture. The classroom culture impacts what the students will be willing to risk.
The question takes on a mind of its own: guiding & mesmerizing impactful & relevant.
A7 Possibly opens up the question to be revised, rephrased and repurposed. Possibly generates more questions.
Perhaps we need to redefine what "right" truly is.
Maybe it's not arriving at a concluding answer.

We'll be discussing

Okay, here comes a closing question...
Time to reflect a bit...

Great discussion tonight!
Let's unleash the power of our questions!

I'm trying something BRAND NEW!
It's an entire fall chat series - and it is VERY UNIQUE!
My closing thoughts r thought I have some tremendous tools from an amazing PLN. Now I just need a job to apply it all
