A2 - To me, it means getting louder and louder to be heard. I am not sure that is the most effective way to have positive influence. We can get a lot further through building respect. #oklaed
A2) I think it is a voice of seriousness and to the point. Often times people dance around a topic. But the respectable teacher voice doesn't have time for that. Straight and to the point in an all too polite fashion. It is good when with respect. #oklaed
#Teachers, you are deeply loved by your students, parents, legislatures, peers, and the rest of our Great State. You are doing good in the world. Continue to go to battle for our children - our future generations of teachers and legislatures. #Oklahoma#Warriors#oklaed#okleg
A2: Back I the day a teacher voice was loud, now with sound systems in every classroom there is no need for a teacher voice, or are you referring to being heard on issues? #oklaed
A2: It is both good and bad. It usually means when I've raised my voice enough and it turns quiet but deadly - everyone knows that's serious. It's like a Mom voice, so everyone understands. #oklaed
A2) Depends on the context of why it is being said. Usually, it is often bad because it assumes a loud voice. However, it can be a reference to a teaching voice or clear communication on a topic. #oklaed
A2 The teacher voice is used by effective Ts to let Ss know they need to pay attention, w/o being demeaning or destroying the trust relationship #oklaed
These amazing #WF 2nd grade teachers met their students for ice cream the night before they walk nearly 13 miles to the Capitol! It’s ALL about the kids!! https://t.co/QTwx7Ih3Gm
A2: Back I the day a teacher voice was loud, now with sound systems in every classroom there is no need for a teacher voice, or are you referring to being heard on issues? #oklaed
A3: I've been using my T voice very loud and proud and yet very respectful this last week at the Capitol. I haven't held back when it comes to advocating for my Ss & their futures. #oklaed#OKTeachersWalkout

A3: Again, I think it is about the level of importance, no volume. I use my "teacher voice" to share with others about the importance of education in our state #oklaed
A2: Right now our teacher voices are joining together at the capitol for a unified Teacher Voice. That's pretty cool. It means Don't You Dare Mess With Our Kids #oklaed#oklaedteacherwalkout
A3: Depends on the situation. I will always stick up for my kids. I will always do everything in my power to make sure their EDU is off the hook. Are ppl still saying that? #oklaed
A2: It means don’t make me project my voice further across the room/cafeteria/field than it needs to be. It means I’m not playin’ lol. When done correctly, it’s always a good thing. #oklaed
A3) I am an educator and therefore an advocate for all students. I use my voice to bring attention to current needs and struggles in education on a daily basis. #oklaed
A1. The “Teacher Voice” is when the smile is gone, the tone and speed of delivery drops, and solid eye contact is made so that there is no surstion about the seriousness of what you are saying. Legislators need to hear this rather than screaming and ranting. #Oklaed
A3) I am not a teacher but I use my momma bear voice to advocate. By that I mean, I am matter of fact but respectful because otherwise we will get nowhere. #oklaed
A3) I use mine to talk to parents about the opportunities available to their children and themselves. Some of my parents do not know about the resources that OKCPS has. #oklaed

A3 When given opportunity to clear up misconceptions about #oklaed, funding, needs, etc, I seize it, professionally but directly. Happening a lot this week.
A3) I am not a teacher but I use my momma bear voice to advocate. By that I mean, I am matter of fact but respectful because otherwise we will get nowhere. #oklaed
A3: Time at the Capitol, coming in to proctor the ACT during the #oklaedteacherwalkout , and talking positively about my school when I'm somewhere else. #oklaed
A3 The teacher voice is one of authority, that has earned respect. If you haven’t earned it, the T voice is nothing but noise. It means nothing w/o the relationship and that is the only way it should be used #oklaed
A3. See A1 which was supposed to be A2. It is the stearn and no nonsense communication used when you have asked nicely too many times with no results. #Oklaed
A4: talk to legislators, talk to other educators, talk to my neighbors.... I want to empower others to be advocates for education. Our state depends on it #oklaed
A4: i need to use my voice MORE to advocate for my top 3. I have been so focused on education (which is my passion) but as a foster parent/adoptive P I need to also spend some energy there. #oklaed#OKTeachersWalkout
A3 this past week being at the capitol has definitely been one way I utilize my voice. I advocate for my Ss within my school, pushing myself to try new things that will benefit my Ss’ individual needs. #oklaed
a3).. I find it easier on social media.. I have been trolled recently regarding the #walkout, and I have had to be clear and educational to the trolls. #oklaed

I need to visit Senator Treat to discuss his stance on who is fit to be a foster parent... I don't want to leave the Capitol and have this regret. I need to use my voice to speak up for all foster children. #oklaed#OklahomaTeachersWalkout
A2. Having a “teacher voice” means having a voice in advocacy. We represent the voices of our students. Glad so many #OKLAED teachers are using it this week! #okleg is MAKING us use it... and it will be heard! #TeacherAsAdvocate#teachervoice 🎤✊🏼
#OklaEd A3: By calmly but persistently talking to others about the successes of our students as well as outlining how restricted resources are impacting the quality of the facilitation of those successes and how increased resources would help!!!
A4: Outside my classroom I try to make sure my attitude and speech is ever promoting, I volunteer with my church, I teach. I teach that all are created equal and also deserve equal education. #oklaed
A2 Respect & courtesy are key. I am concerned a few of the teacher voices heard this week don't represent us the way we hope. Ugly signs &calling names is not who we are. Only a few, but those tend to get press #oklaed
A2 Raising your voice in a stern manner. Not yelling, but getting your point across. Can be both good and bad depending on situations. Should not be relied on as a means to communicate often with Ss #oklaed
A4 - I want to blog about #edtech. But I sometimes find myself advocating for public education. We all have a voice to use - as we are discovering. #oklaed
A4) I build relationships with Legislators on both sides of the aisle and never make #oklaed a party issue bc it isn’t. I also lead an advocacy group on social media so everyone can be informed on issues.
A3: Teacher voice to explain/teach/or clarify. To fight the fight by defending the faith! Faith that doing the right thing is hard, but its the right thing if we are truly focused on kids. Provide guidance to non-educators to be more informed. #oklaed
A3: I talk to everyone I know and inform them about what is happening both in the public and private education. I also regularly talk to legislators. Lastly, I am working to offer low cost trainings to improve our instruction in the state of OK. #oklaed
A5 Respect is a huge part of my classroom and as a Spanish teacher we discuss a lot of different cultures and family values as well as various education systems around the world. So compare and contrast happens often and makes it "real". #oklaed

A5 - Probably with not as much caution as I should. Teaching history gives me freedom to push the envelope a bit more. I bring discussions about the past in to the present and let my students see both sides of issues. #oklaed
Getting ready to prepare for my trek to OKC tomorrow for the #okteacherwalkout to fight for proper education.
I’m doing it for my friends who teach and for the people who made me who I am.
#oklaed
A5b - I also have students do at least one student voice project during the year, where they are bringing attention to things that matter to them. #oklaed
a4).. I try to tell the story of the teachers who left from my research in print, on the news, and in op eds. I try to use my privileged position as a professor to speak with data. #oklaed
#OklaEd A4: By blogging about the successes and the needs and by seeking to dialogue with others to help us all learn how to work with such individuals.
A4 Encourage Ss to be active in the community. Two of the other options were not topics that I feel do not need to be advocated for through the lens of a T #oklaed

A5: Not in the classroom anymore, but advocate daily for special students groups, students curriculum/instructional needs, and teachers ability to express themselves #oklaed
Good point. That phrase in particular is always done in humor. The actual act though has some people with bad memories and some with good. Just depended on the relationship with the teacher. #OklaEd
A5: Not in the classroom... but I address these issues by talking to teachers about how they impact the classroom and how they can be alleviated #oklaed

A3 I try to be articulate and professional in my speech. I want people to take teachers as seriously as they would anyone else with a degree in a specific field. We are the experts when it comes to teaching and learning. #oklaed
A5: Listen we all look different. We all live in different spaces Does it mean some ppl are more equal than others?
Stop staring unless you are trying to figure out a way to help. Otherwise, lets get educated. I'll have some splainin to do on the show this week #OklaSaid#oklaed

A6 Absolutely!!! My teacher voice is very professional and politically correct. Little ears are listening and watching. My personal voice is saved for private conversations where trust is strong and misinterpretations are not as possible. #oklaed
A5) since I don’t have a classroom, I’d like to ask if Teachers feel it’s acceptable to berate Legislators to their students while teaching? I keep hearing more and more about this happening. #oklaed
A4 Ugh! I am such an A. Burr when it comes to that. I’d rather talk less and smile more all day than meet confrontation. Usually I just preach to my friend choir on issues we all value. #oklaed
A5) since I don’t have a classroom, I’d like to ask if Teachers feel it’s acceptable to berate Legislators to their students while teaching? I keep hearing more and more about this happening. #oklaed
#OklaEd A5: Not in the classroom but were I, I would periodically have a dialogue about important issues - a civics timeout if you will, regardless of the class being facilitated.
People like you are worthless because you care more about taking off work than what these teachers are trying to accomplish for your children. Their job is to teach your kids not a be a babysitter! It’s your job as a parent to find child care for your kids. #OKlaed#stepup
A6: Thats a good Q. I usually say exactly whats on my mind, but I do feel like I might be on eggshells with some of the other issues on the list. #oklaed

A. Building relationships is crucial to education.
B. Education is a political act.
Is it necessary for you to know what is important to students in order to teach them?
Is it necessary to share what is important to you with students to build relationships?
#oklaed
A6) I’ve often felt a conflict with my momma bear voice and my employee voice. Employers often frown upon their employees speaking their minds if people know where they work. Even if it’s not during work hours. #oklaed
A5) since I don’t have a classroom, I’d like to ask if Teachers feel it’s acceptable to berate Legislators to their students while teaching? I keep hearing more and more about this happening. #oklaed
A7 - I say yes to both. I try to be fairly transparent in my classroom. I also think it helps to be able know your students and what they are into. It can give you an in to break down the barriers. #oklaed

I believe it's best disagree without berating...but sometimes legislators need to remember you have the right to disagree. (Speaking from experience) #oklaed
A5) since I don’t have a classroom, I’d like to ask if Teachers feel it’s acceptable to berate Legislators to their students while teaching? I keep hearing more and more about this happening. #oklaed
A7: I think it is. I think it is incredible important to know what is important to students in order to teacher them and to connect them with learning. Building relationships is all about knowing what is important to your students #oklaed
A5 I do sometimes feel a conflict. To me, discussion doesn't mean approval or support. Also, things that were once inappropriate are now okay. Or matters like LGBTQA+ or Black Lives Matter are touchy. Children are dying, why can't we talk about it? #oklaed

No, it is not acceptable to berate anyone. Our biggest job is to help students understand their democratic duties. Unfortunately, berating is something our current president does so many follow suit. #oklaed
A7: I think there is a need for a screen w/ Ss sometimes. If they are young, keep them young. If they are older give them doses. No need to shelter, but there is plenty of time to get depressed in life, lets not bring them down w. our issues. #oklaed

A7A) I want to know what’s important to students. It helps me teach them through a connection.
A7B) I like sharing with my students. It lets them know I’m not a robot. They like my stories because they like having a reason to roll their eyes!🙄 #oklaed

A6: I don't feel any issue bc I am pretty outspoken. It isn't always welcomed but I speak my mind. My admin realize where my heart is and accredit me to having a big heart. I think it's all in your actions backing up your words. #oklaed
A7 What is important to you and your values and morals are important for your Ss to know ....but your personal opinion about a controversial topic maybe not so much. But the more you know about your Ss the better...ALWAYS. #oklaed

A7) The political world of students today is so drastically different from when I was in 7-12th grade. Students now are more in-tune w/politics and their place in the world. Is politics inevitable in the classroom? Should I wait for my future students to address politics?#oklaed
More #oklaed districts closed tomorrow then any other day so far. More than 50% more- that's huge! 70 districts who get that #okleg can do better for our students. #oklaedwalkout

A7: I think it is important to know what’s important to students, they may be simply trying to literally survive. Helps to know what’s going on. #oklaed

Candlelight vigil already wrapped here in Stillwater. Spoke with organizer Renee Williams, kindergarten teacher at Will Rogers, posting a story here in a bit #okteacherwalkout#oklaed@StwNewsPress
A7: As an elementary educator is was paramount to build relationships with students, know them inside out, I shared things with my students that I deemed exceptable, family stories, fav color etc. NO POLITICAL rhetoric #oklaed
A7: #oklaed It is not necessary or important to share everything, but the T and Ss need to understand each other on some personal level to build a sense of trust, which helps the learning process move more smoothly.
#OklaEd A6: I do not - for two reasons mostly: Dedicated to my values / vision, my personal and teacher voices cannot conflict with each other. And to truly facilitate Effective Learning, both my personal and teaching voices must be used in interactions with students.
A7 I’ve struggled big time with this one this year. I want to make my students aware of social issues and what I find important, but it can conflict with what they hear at home. I’m trying to find a balance between education and indoctrination. #oklaed
A7: Some Ss come to school to learn, others come to school to be loved. I need to meet each where they are and build on the foundation for THAT student. They don't all come to me at the same place. I have to meet them. #oklaed
A7: In the words of the great rita pierson, kids don’t learn from people they don’t like. Relationships is crucial in education. Don’t think has to be a political act at all. #oklaed

My 5th graders dont need to hear about me dropping out of school...but a Senior about to make the decision is a different story. Making relationships is one thing, but too much exposure is another.

I hv 2 differnt S podcasts. If they want to start more w/ other topics I'll help. But when Ss start marginalizing others for the sake of their point, I will shut it down. Its a public classroom, thats when its NOT theirs. If they are experts in the matter, let them speak. #oklaed

A8 The biggest lesson I can teach my kids in English is how to find and cite a reliable source. Part of being a teenager is knowing everything. It’s much easier to listen to views that don’t mesh with mine if the student cites a reputable source that agrees with them. #oklaed
A7: We have to know what drives our students to know how to reach them. They have to know us well enough to know we care about them. We have to have a solid basis in which to build trust. No trust, no learning. #oklaed

Paulo Freire is the author of "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" and a few other excellent books. His passion is incredible and his words are timeless. I highly suggest reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed some time. Quote-worthy from start to finish.

Although I am a math T and always can’t make a lesson out of it, I have found ways to navigate this. I never share what I believe or how I vote. I give them material to read that are of diverse sides. We are creating thinkers!! #oklaed

B. Education is a political act.

#oklaed#OklahomaTeachersWalkout Kathy Dunn, Asst. Supt. from Mid-Del. From the steps of the Capitol with amazing, resilient Oklahoma educators! I’ll catch up on the chat in the Archives.
I'm going to use it tomorrow and share the experience with my students who I haven't talked to yet to show off my skills at being a mature adult in the face of some serious ignorance #oklaed
#OklaEd A8: By listening and asking follow-up questions. While of course, our initial positions frequently differ, the listening and subsequent dialog hopefully lead to the “ better alternative” (everyone agreeing is better than initial positions) that Stephen Covey advocated!!!
Q8 How do we model advocacy and encourage student voice? How do we listen...even when we don't agree? #oklaed

Another example Okies that this is about creating a blue wave. See this teacher or persons hashtag?
This has NOTHING to do with EDUCATION, they are just using your kid to get DEMOCRATS elected!

Q9 If you feel there is a conflict or recognize there is a conflict for others between personal voice and teacher voice, how do you make peace with it?
What rules do you set for yourself? What rules are set for you? #oklaed
A9) I try to remember that even though the mom in me is angry for my kiddos at times, I’ll get nowhere with bully tactics. If I want to be included in the conversation, I have to be respectful yet firm not someone that’s easier to avoid. #oklaed

Good evening educators...just getting on tonight. Indian educator & parent to 3 Indian students.
The teachers in this state are making me PROUD!!! #oklaed
I am so glad you are laughing. I am so sorry. I think you and @TeachFromHere are the best ever! Just hit and miss on reading blogs or listening to podcasts. You know me. I keep it #real#oklaed
A9: I think I may have not known there was a difference, but I am at peace with how I talk to and educate my Ss.
Rule 1: Dont raise your voice, unless to get attention
Rule2: Dont talk down to anyone
Rule 3: Be the Church :-)
Rule 4: No cussing...see rule 3

Agreed. I try to model the PROCESS of how to become critically informed by critically reading/writing, but I don’t necessarily focus on the PRODUCT= my opinion. #oklaed
Teacher voice is important - but not to the extent that it places one perosn above another. That should never be promoted by anyone. We are all of us in this together. https://t.co/oQVLEhEyuP! #oklaed
A9: I am aware of my own discomfort surrounding talking about certain issues in certain spheres, so it’s not difficult to make peace with others’ discomfort with doing the same. #oklaed

#OklaEd A9: “Making peace” is all too often code for ‘finding some way’ to ignoring / trying to bury differences. Better to dialogue openly to seek, again, that better alternative - or at least understand everyone better, enabling all to agree to disagree.

A10) Good grief! Be smart and try to stay off of local and national news broadcasts. Use appropriate readings of fiction and nonfiction. Educate yourself. #oklaed
This is the current struggle for everyone - how do we teach media literacy? We can have different points of view, but the definition of what a fact is has changed for the worse recently...#oklaed

A9 Rules: Set by me: I keep some things always to myself. Set by others: This is tough. We don’t always know where those lines are until we cross them. #oklaed
Absolutely! They are hesitant at first because they've never been told they can tell a teacher they're wrong, but it's a great way to practice responding without getting upset. It definitely takes practice... #oklaed
I have no closure for you as I hope you continue to explore this topic.
Thank you for your time and energy, #oklaed! Have a great week opening hearts and minds!
A8: We create projects instead of assignments and grade on voice, clarity, and organization instead of merely correctness. And we allow Ss to play devils' advocate to us after we model it with them. #oklaed

My teacher voice and my personal voice are conflicted over the lack of action or weak stances of some districts. I am proud of Central High who said they were supporting the teachers and OEA and not waffleing. A hardship now will pay off big for future students #oklaed
School counselors - see you on the southwest side of the Capitol tomorrow. Look for our tent and banner. We’ll have OSCA stickers and a photo prop ready for you. #oklaed#oklaleg#okwalk4kids
