A1 New school, new kids, new year! Soooo many things! #scitlap
  • ArmstreetsClass Sep 26 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A1: Time! Which is always my biggest challenge! I have papers to grade and a stack of POs to process! Maybe... eventually...I'll catch up! 🤷😉 #scitlap

A1 My biggest challenge so far is just trying to do all of the things I want and not enough hours in the day. I am obsessed with all things Google and it's capabilities. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Wow! That is a big adjustment. Almost like starting from the beginning. #scitlap

Its not been on the sci side but math this year. Learning new Ss, differentiation, creating a routine in my block city schedule. I’d like a new curric too. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Google tech is a big rabbit hole to fall down. It is tough keeping everything in perspective with so much to do and learn. ##scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Developing Curric is no joke. Very tough to do. Had to do it for physics a few years ago. Lots of math to learn for me. #scitlap

  • daleyscience - Moderator Sep 26 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A2 The first go to is lists, but so long and so many. My best strategy is to pick one or two things to accomplish each day. I literally say to myself..."no fun stuff, until you finish these items". #scitlap
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A2: I start out organized and then school starts ! Lol. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:26 PM EDT
I keep everything in Gslides. Each slide is a day of class and notes are reflections or suggestions for the next year (or that year as I brainstorm). #scitlap

A2: Seriously for me I have a notebook that I have to write things down in. It is a perpetual “to do” list on the right side and brainstorming/ideas on the lest side. This keeps me somewhat sane. #scitlap

Q3 How do you keep all your science stuff organized? Do you have a chem storage room, cabinet for microscopes? How does it all work out? #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Sep 26 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I have a Google Sheet with tabs for everything: Ss logins, schedules, patent contact, links to all the sites we use. I print it for my Substitute binder. I learned to link my budget spreadsheet to the cover page this year so I can see what’s left in two budgets. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Sep 26 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3 We literally call it the scary hallway and it needs to be cleaned out so we can store stuff better. There are things from the 70s in their, it's crazy. Also, so many sample books!!!! #scitlap
  • karlacalbear Sep 26 @ 9:31 PM EDT
@daleyscience @pentaclethra #scitlap Sorry to drop the ball. Totally forgot about leading tonight. I will sign up again. Don’t know what I was thinking with my house getting termite tented tomorrow!

I still use a physical plan book but this year I use it to records what is have done rather than what I plan to do. And I haven’t written in it much yet. I am thinking I need to make this aspect digital as you have. #scitlap

  • HowardKiyuna Sep 26 @ 9:35 PM EDT
I emptied my closet & added a chair with lights. I put the shelf behind the door and wrapped a curtain on it. I have buns & boxes under tables. Then there’s the crates under/behinds my desk that I’ve not gotten to. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Be VERY careful when cleaning out old closets. I have found huge mercury thermometers, radioactive test kits form the 80s, and unknowns! #scitlap

  • ArmstreetsClass Sep 26 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3: We have a chemical storage closet, an equipment storage room...and then I bought a rolling microscope cart that is amazing! Luckily there's a ton of storage in our rooms too! #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • daleyscience - Moderator Sep 26 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Most of that kind of stuff has been removed, but you never know. Will definitely be careful. Thank you. #scitlap

Hahahaha. We have something similar but it is a closet full of containers filled with preserved animals. They have been there longer than I have been teaching there (over 10 years)! #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:37 PM EDT
This goes for all sci teachers. If you feel unsafe cleaning out a closet or room don't do it. #scitlap
  • hoffmanteambret Sep 26 @ 9:38 PM EDT
My first job found a file cabinet full of mimographs the T was using on the copy machine. Wild stuff in those closets! #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Same at our school. Maintenance doesn't want to do it. Science teachers won't get rid of it. You can't just throw the stuff out. Ends up just sitting around. #scitlap

Q4 What suggestion would you give a new teacher to not get overwhelmed with the job? #scitlap
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A3: I have pretty good storage. We have a chemical storage room that all science rooms share. Our problem is the chemicals from the fifties that are still there. Every year we try to get an inventory updated. I think we already almost there! #scitlap
  • ArmstreetsClass Sep 26 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A4: Don't be afraid to ask for help, don't reinvent the wheel/get in your own way, don't be afraid to say no / take baby steps, don't be afraid to fail! #Scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • daleyscience - Moderator Sep 26 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A4 I think it comes down to letting them know they don't have to be perfect and they don't have to know everything. #scitlap
  • hoffmanteambret Sep 26 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A4 Two things to remember 1) Focus on student needs, 2) Find that T that you can trust. Your not alone and your not the first to feel what you feel. #scitlap

A4: If at all possible connect the lessons to your interests. I learned some new words on YouTube. Paludarium amd Vivarium. Terrarium with water. Found a great deal on a tank today. Gonna build it soon. https://t.co/ryMTOiucZn #scitlap
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:45 PM EDT
When the Ss ask if there is anything else they can dissect (Anat & Phys) I respond, “Let me check the closet.” The always respond wide-eyed, “There’s a closet of stuff?” 😂#scitlap

Bad form to have the EPA declare your chem storage area as a Cleanup Site? #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Sep 26 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Lol.....kids always ask where I get equipment or supplies....I'm always like..."ummm, in the hallway". #scitlap

Facebook market and Craigslist are great for finding stuff for animals. Got new terrariums for my growing bearded dragon this summer. #scitlap

  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:48 PM EDT
Me too! I. It only had the mimeographs but also, a shoe box of paper clips that I removed before tossing everything out! The guy loved his paperclips! #scitlap
    In reply to @hoffmanteambret
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:51 PM EDT
I second this. I still have trouble with this myself. The perfection part. But I am getting better. You have to because there is no way I would get everything done if it all had to be perfect. #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:51 PM EDT
Q5 Do you color code? Number everything? Use lots of post-its? Time to tell us how crazy organized you are. #scitlap
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A4: I agree with everyone’s advice. I would also add to take some time to really enjoy your students. It is easy to get caught up in what has to done but creating memories and making connections is really what it is all about! #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A5 The only crazy thing I do it clean up everything on Friday or before a sub comes in my room. I try and stay organized by staying clean. A facade really. #scitlap
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:54 PM EDT
    Love this! #scitlap

A5 I use labeled bins for each unit, 3-ring binders for each unit as well, post-it's for collecting assignments. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Sep 26 @ 9:58 PM EDT
I used to use my unit binders more. Almost everything is digitized now. #scitlap

A5 GOOGLE. ...my best Google find is making a code rather than putting in folders. Ex. for my Thinking Like a Scientist unit, I labeled every Google file with a SI for an easy search. #scitlap
  • TraceyKast Sep 26 @ 9:59 PM EDT
A5: I have started color coding my google files on the drive. I have so many files and volley between my personal drive and the school drive, it is the only way I can keep things straight. As for post-it’s. . . Looking at my room one would think I have stock in 3M #scitlap
