Good morning friends. Di, chief tech & info officer from Green Bay, WI.
Good morning! Ben from NC.
Good morning, Friends! Veronica from NJ.
hi Di!
How are you doing?
Hi Carl! How are the alpacas?
REluctant learners: you need to find teh thing that sparks them: get to know the student and slowly turn them your way
Hi Carl... are you marking with a red pen?
Good morning all! David MS Principal from the Commonwealth of VA here. Happy little Friday friends!
It is all about building relationships, if Ss trust you, they will work for you, even the reluctant ones!
Hi Di. The alpacas are getting used to teh colder weather. keeping in the low covered areas and out of teh exposed hills
Hi Kerri! All is well. Enjoying spring where I live. How about you?
Morning Verinica how are you today ?
You first have to deal with them by developing a solid relationship of trust. Know what they care about & show you care about them.
The twitterverse applauds their arrival ->
Actually black pen. I'm to disorganised to have two pens on me
Relationship, personal conversations & connections, short term goals, set up 4 & celebrate small successes. https://t.co/4edNnwEhDk
Reluctant learners ... tap into their passion ... connect it to their life ... make it real to them ...
Good morning Jennifer from OH
Tough one, Try to dig deep to find what a S loves, crack their heart a little, & try to tailor tech lessons to their 'dreams'.
Eric is here, let's get this party started!
I hope not! Red is such an angry colour when marking.
I only mark what is correct. No red pen and crosses
Reluctant learners ... sometimes it is because they DON'T like you ... you should try to fix that ... before learn comes like
very good Di thanks. Went to my first this week... inspiring! Coming into Winter ...
We're just starting to enjoy warmer weather here. Don't alpacas have good insulation with their nice fur?
Its impt to remember it is a process. It takes time to turn them ur way. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. Perserverance
Good morning from Massachusetts !
Brian, HS principal
Yes! After you build the relationship foundation, connect to what they are passionate about. Give them choice to create.
Find out WHO the learner is....often the WHY is then apparent. Work on HOW to make learning rewarding together.
Relationships are key when dealing with reluctant learners
Then after marking I spend time with each S going through my comments
Good morning, Kathleen from Western MA.
Hi Mark. You are always so nice! Good morning:)
They have great insulation and it doesn't get much colder than 2C here so they can cope
Yes! Making connections that are relevant to the student is key to getting buy in. https://t.co/1vF7rVmCKl
Reluctant learners ... tap into their passion ... connect it to their life ... make it real to them ...
We have a S we R struggling 2 motivate regardless what we have done & continue to do. Difficult if family is not a willing partner.
OK, this made me LOL...morning Kimberly!
Reluctant learners...listen to them, respect their voice, offer choice, build trust, model growth mindset.
Build relationships first. They won't learn from you if they don't trust you.
hey Mark... i love it when I can catch up with my whanau! Hope is out there somewhere?
ever since college, that is why Thursday is my favorite day of the week.
That feel like me this morning. Traffic banked up and suddenly felt very disorganised
...or they don't like your subject, or school, etc. Find the root cause & show them you care.
Truth. https://t.co/cUbT9HKlJT
Reluctant learners...listen to them, respect their voice, offer choice, build trust, model growth mindset.
Make school a place that reluctant learners find new worth. Love the ones that are hardest to love EVEN MORE.
Agree that connecting is key. If they don't like me I try to find something in class they connect with - book, assignment, peer...
lost a great non-tenured partner to cuts yesterday. Feeling very sad today. Great teacher, loss to school. 😢 morning all.
We will be hosting in Google Boot camp next fall. Our teachers appreciate all Googly stuff we can provide for them.
Good morning friends! Sts aren't the only reluctant learners. How do you get "old school" Ts to try & embrace new ways of teaching?
Sometimes you're undoing years of a S being sold a false narrative;namely, that learning is a pain whose sole purpose is THE TEST...
Face it, WE ARE ALL RELUCTANT LEARNERS that's the way it works --
Finding a way to make learning relevant to their lives. Answering the "why do we do this?" helps them find meaning
often deeper reason then your subject. Something hidden.
Indeed! What you don't do is give up on them. It's down to me to find a way. Never, ever give up.
Quiet conversations; quiet comments; music ; many times of it's ok, just try-a word, a sentence...
Always tough when a great T goes....Hugs! https://t.co/uLmDbF7jpW
lost a great non-tenured partner to cuts yesterday. Feeling very sad today. Great teacher, loss to school. 😢 morning all.
The profession can ill afford to lose the great ones
Jessica is usually next time zone's chat
I believe you need a good relationship or some sort of connection, then you model and share with excitement to get them excited
keep in my consciousness that the student has lost motivation somewhere along the way.Not born unmotivated. https://t.co/Vig4WC2TaT
as with anything in life, it all comes down to positive relationships. Listening, building trust, and nurturing our key.
I'm noticing a theme here the last 2 days...relationships and student choice!! Powerful combination!
this is essential to all Ss. If I can't explain why i'm teaching it , I don't
or that school isn't for them, they are not "smart."
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Tired after a long night at my boys' school BOE meeting. Sorry I'm late.
what is available to us & our kids now blows me away ... have to be selective about what to try / what to use *overwhelming*
"Because you need to know this" is NOT a good reason for reluctant learners to buy into what you are teaching.
Or they've had to endure bad teaching and no longer trust the system
How do you deal with reluctant learners? You love them. It's all about the relationship.
Curious, what affect might reluctant teachers have on reluctant learners and vice versa?
Changing S perception and leaving,at least,a seed of hope that the child falls in love w learning can only be done via relationships
ok .. thanks for the heads up:) Might stay up :)
alng with, because it's on the test UGHH !!
sorry, this is a hard time of year
We should watch this every day! One that never gets old. Always sad that Rita passed too soon. https://t.co/Du9gagHleU
HEY PLN Let's connect with Kathleen...
I agree, but sometimes the reluctant learners need a little more convincing :)
Correct sir! Ss have to see the real world applications for what they are learning.
If I don't find value in what you are telling me I will stop listening ...
Backing up with data helps. https://t.co/Vygmm5TGaw
Good morning friends! Sts aren't the only reluctant learners. How do you get "old school" Ts to try & embrace new ways of teaching?
We need 2 remember that sometimes we can't save them all. Doesn't mean we don't try. There r times we r not the 1 to reach them
I had an issue yesterday with an Aide referring to work in a negative manner to my Ss. Took a lot of extra work to correct attitude
So true! My class may be the only safe place this S knows. My role is to help them, not exacerbate distrust.
perhaps w/ some things but if I can see a benefit/connection, I am pretty open.
So sorry to hear! You and your school are in my thoughts!
excellent point, Ss pick up on signals from Ts .If we model displeasure & disinterest, what would we expect from Ss?
so true ! yes ! https://t.co/kdsd5Zg6EN
So true! My class may be the only safe place this S knows. My role is to help them, not exacerbate distrust.
I ponder that every day. I focus on growth for myself with confidence they will grow when they're ready.
Reluctant learners are sometimes the students who act out the most that need the most love. https://t.co/EMzS9H51v3
Make school a place that reluctant learners find new worth. Love the ones that are hardest to love EVEN MORE.
Great question. I fear its direct correlation. https://t.co/56rZ2kFfGF
Curious, what affect might reluctant teachers have on reluctant learners and vice versa?
honestly, think & share something that is tough for you-me-spatial concepts
Some days I'm better at this than others:)
wow....great question Mark. Where exactly does the problem lie, w/S or T?
Had a S that said, "hate your subject, but love your class. Can you teach math instead?" Told him, "I'll try to make you love it."
Yes, those Ss who have already labeled themselves can be hard to reach. Need to instill a growth mindset
Now I can respond. (Comprehension issues pre-coffee!) That's a shame--esp. When they are good/do what's good for kids.
yes in my Alt Ed class most are RL's behaviors a direct result almost every time.
Reluctant learners are often the first ones to visit after graduation....school often the best & most constant place they know.
#1892 When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.
https://t.co/KmCPbLl36U
Sounds like the same as what we do with Ss, right? https://t.co/WHPDvfAQmZ
Reluctant learners...listen to them, respect their voice, offer choice, build trust, model growth mindset.
Great recipe for making a positive impact with reluctant Ss!
Your school is filled with reluctant learners ... and i am NOT talking about the kids.
there should never be a PRE COFFEE!!
That's why I can never be reluctant despite how tired I am.
Great point! Because if we have reluctant teachers then we will be sure to have reluctant learners in those classrooms.
indeed ! https://t.co/PaTlc6rKX5
Great point! Because if we have reluctant teachers then we will be sure to have reluctant learners in those classrooms.
We were just talking about this kids of situation last night on .
All kids need a place of safety and welcome where they know somebody believes in them, cares for them...where they CAN learn.
Thanks for great thoughts this morning. A special shout out to for his passion and energy this morning.
Good morning
Scott, superintendent from NJ
I'm following these great responses this AM.
Hope everyone has a awesome day at school
Thanks for the thanks Kathleen ->
If a kid perceives a project as pointless they will become a reluctant learner ... Some of the brightest are the most reluctant.
Unfortunately many of these Ss have been told they are failures. You have to be the one to show them they are not.
Get to know them better and make connections when teaching to gain their interest.
Family attitude is hard to change. Ss feel loyalty to family attitude
Reluctant Ts need help seeing possibilities. Watching another T helps tremendously. Sometimes you just need to see it in action.
THIS ===>
https://t.co/x7zJEgZmgN
Unfortunately many of these Ss have been told they are failures. You have to be the one to show them they are not.
I use problem-based learning with low-level entry points to encourage buy in. Also every day and lots of too.
It's FINALLY ready! *Dives in head-first!*
Relevancy to Ss lives and interests has to be the Ts focus in planning activities and assessments
yes reluctant does not always mean not capable.
If Ts r reluctant it creates a negative view on learning. Unacceptable any where
Relationships seems to be the only way. Even a little budge in reluctance is a win
Absolutely! Ts who model life long learning & enthusiasm are essential in reaching reluctant learners https://t.co/eUjACW5gZd
Great point! Because if we have reluctant teachers then we will be sure to have reluctant learners in those classrooms.
I hate this time of year. Need to put my game face on for sure.
Cindy from VA checking in-GM! Must cultivate a relationship w/ not only reluctant learners but also Ps if ES and peers if MS/HS
Thanks for following this string. It's a great way to wake up in the morning https://t.co/rjmN0bstrr
Good morning

1) Sometimes reluctant learners aren't really reluctant; they are afraid to voice their uncertainty about the topic...
I think for teachers it starts with frustration that their voices won't be heard. You have to try.
Sounds like the perfect recipe for growth. https://t.co/S4vqDedN7G
Reluctant learners...listen to them, respect their voice, offer choice, build trust, model growth mindset.
Thanks for reminding me of the importance of our work. Yesterday =v. tough, you saved me & Ss from a today of "phoning it in"

Make it a point today 2 reach out to 1 of ur reluctant learners...S or T. Make it ridiculously awesome today!
lemons to lemonade! Turning frowns upside down!
Go be amazing today! Build some relationships!! Thanks again for the morning boost!
you are so right. This is the most challenging I have had in a while in that regard.
Nailed it Alex. We can't allow this cancerous focus on the test to sap the joy & wonder of learning from our Ss.
Have a great day! thanks again for the great insights.
Just 1 reason collaborative leadership is critical to school culture & success
yes so often we have to rebuild ( or build) Ss confidence in their abilities
That's why we gather here for a great dose of positivity daily. You can do it!
2)...or they are hungry, overtired, dealing w/ home issues, angry, etc. We have to be compassionate & develp a reltnship 1st.
It's not lost on me how many principals are listening here each morning. Means a lot.
This was a great start ot Pre Friday. Have a super day great educators
Absolutely...all Ss need and deserve such support!
Probably both with Ts job to undo/unravel Ss fixed mindset about self as learner?
Got it go, see you tomorrow!!!
Agreed. The atmosphere for embracing learning must be promoted from the top, admin-teacher-student. https://t.co/D8bjplpz2P
If Ts r reluctant it creates a negative view on learning. Unacceptable any where
So, my fave... I hope you turn him around to your content, but at least he loves coming each day! GL w your partner.
love the penguins ( I collect them!! )
Interesting because in Math we talk about "fake world math" a lot; forced "real life"
https://t.co/qXYc7FFtFo
Correct sir! Ss have to see the real world applications for what they are learning.
Yep! That's why I'm not afraid to make mistakes in front of my st. I use it as a teachable moment when I do! https://t.co/kZVYoR1mS5
agree, sometimes Ss are afraid to make a mistake in front of others we have to teach Ss they can make mistakes that's how yougrow
Have a great today. Time to wake up the boys for school with mom.
~ I did receive an awesome message recently from a student 20 yrs ago thanking me for all we did for him!
Don't forget we can keep going over at voxer group !!!
Thanks for the chat
I got distracted, I distracted other people
It's what i do best
this particular young man now is at high risk for dropout so we definitely want to get him hooked in and connected
I hear you! I don't like that feeling at all!
I come across Ss who I felt I had little influence on, who tell me things they appreciated i never knew
Thanks to all ! Have an amazing day with students, colleagues and parents! Be the change!
Good morning. Late today but catching up on all the great shared practices! You guys always inspire me!
I walked in during briefing, my notes were in another building, all 1st period I felt i was bluffing being a teacher
I'd love to go to work with my dad today...he's retired and in Puerto Rico
Hi Jennifer. I'm still here. Are you pumped to change someone's world today
believe me...we have tried EVERY angle. The staff is a small army around him.
Make today great, friends!
Good luck. Sometimes you can't win and I hate saying that. But I know you will keep trying - I would
Yes! Moving a reluctant learner--teacher or student--is like moving a mountain. We are focusing on the progress!
Ask how do you know you've moved them at all. 1st thought is if they smile. So it keeps going back to relationships
One of my teachers was bummed we reached last all-day small-group PD session of the year Tuesday. Great feeling!
Reluctance is a cry for attention.

Good morning CST- Sprinting has become a daily activity for me 😳
Morning / evening it's that time again -coffee anyone? Reluctant learners? I use my secret weapon 😜 https://t.co/HGnj5z5TPX
Good morning CST edition!!!
Nooooo I sometimes ask them to teach me something they know lots about
Comes back to those relationships that we establish with those reluctant learners
Looking for friends in my w/ MS & HS w/8am start time or later for student research project. https://t.co/oYQnPr1KAW
So sorry to hear about the loss of your brother Jerry. sends our very best to you and your fam,
Find something engaging to get them involved. Turn & talk, Kahoot, Socrative. Or 1 on 1 time where I can talk to them quietly
Looking for friends in my w/ MS & HS w/8am start time or later for student research project. https://t.co/Iqx93Ditcz
Others times I hand them an envelope with their name on it -usually containing something to do with the lesson -makes it personal
support them - engage them by their interest - know what they want and what they need - be their voice!
Ah, yes! I have been there as well!
Sad huh https://t.co/a1grZ6nYui
Your school is filled with reluctant learners ... and i am NOT talking about the kids.
Everybody succeeds at something! Find their interests and leverage it!
Good morning Chiming in late. I build relationships and try to understand the "WHY" behind the reluctance. Mostly I don't give up.
oh my, Carl... let's not get carried away... ha, ha...
Ss sometimes choose to sit at Ts desk - I won't be using it so they might as well :)

sad but true, then I end up in PD that doesn't apply to me or could've/have taught myself..Or existed in an email!
Student-created Kahoots are an amazing learning tool. My Ss create them for their projects.
It's "about me" while they learn how to create . I teach tech tools w/o content first, I think it's important
Reluctant learners are often fearful of failure, disappointment, etc. Build trust and a safe learning space https://t.co/pBAtFmAKUA
Comes back to those relationships that we establish with those reluctant learners
Good morning, Oona from NJ. I teach 11th and 12th grade ELA.
Today's question is good for me, since teaching 12th graders = senioritis. They're in a holding pattern, waiting to go to college
Good Morning Jill from Colorado.
You just have 2 show them love. They might be going through something that is causing the reluctance in learning and just need loved
Shots fired, which I like. The more stakeholders who notice the "moral imperative" & act on it, the better. https://t.co/A6nWoVcrpU
Ahhh, reluctant learners. Meeting them where they are at first. Recognize the back story first.

Create a culture of risk - big hairy audacious risks w/u. that failure is OK as long as we learn from it.
G'morning, Oona. Any past successes or new inspirations for shaking up this pattern?
Absolutely! I like the way the Q us worded. Could use it to have those courageous conversations. Hard to argue!
Morning, Jill. The back story does feel like one way to foster a relationship, beginning of foundation on which to build
Excited for my first breakfast club chat! I'm a sophomore PreK-4 Elem Ed. major at Grove City College!
Yes, agreed. I think identifying the fear is another piece. Fear of failure, success, constancy, etc.
Teaching to Ss interests and giving them enough freedom to pick paper themes, project ideas etc. could help!
Student choice is so important. When Ts release control and facilitate, Ss blossom.
Two antidotes to reluctance: BHAGs a la Jim Collins or the newer iteration - moonshot thinking. https://t.co/MSrm6ECSvf
Knowing your students too is essential. Why are they reluctant learners? Consider all possibilities. Your Ss are worth it!
To your list, I'd add this variation: perfection-or-bust outlook, which I'm noticing more
Remember Eric Jensen does talk about 'learned helplessness'! mmmmm
I also would include quick vs involved time. I think I could keep going on this one to identify so many fears.
Love! Do you think the idea of playing small and entitlement is part of the lack of moonshot thinking?
You buy Teach Like a Pirate and embrace the philosophy no learner can resist!
Competition vs Collaboration and the effects of both????

When dealing with reluctant learners, I try to find out first what's causing their reluctance, then go from there.
Unless you learn the backstory, you can't address the situation. So relationships w/ reluctant learners = key
I used to personalize it a lot when Ss were reluctant learners. Now I look upon it as a challenge and a mission!
Read what others say about 5 W’s of Personalized Learning eCourse- Summer Session: https://…| More: https://t.co/rFSsUqqucA
Sometimes those reasons are not only valid, but informative to you as an instructor
Reluctant learners are often the voice of the silent majority on some issues. Tap into them, don't freeze up on them
Relevance is important. Ss are reluctant to learn what they can't implement or what doesn't matter.
