Tonight we will be using a Q1/A1 format. So for every Q, you put a A. And be sure to also include the number of the question. AND don't forget to use the hashtag #Earlylang so we can all follow along.
#Earlylang friends - to start off with, please tell us a little about you. Where are you? What do you teach? What grade levels? And something fun about you!
Hi #Earlylang, I’m Dorie, Spanish teacher grades 1-5 in CT. Something fun about me is that I’m currently packing to leave for Spain on Friday! (So I’ll be popping in and out) 💃🏻🥘🇪🇸
#Earlylang - I'm Nathan and I teach French to students in pre-K through grade 5. My interesting thing - one of my three dogs is crazily begging for treats right now. And I'm SO over winter.
#EarlyLang Hi all! I am Luci Galván. I am a K-3 Spanish teacher in CA. Hmmm, something fun...I'm looking forward to my fist Peruvian adventure this summer.
A1 for daily self reflection I write our Can Do statement on the board (in L1) and at the end of class students hold up fingers to show their ability.
1=I can do it on my own
2=I can do it with some help
3=Not yet
#Earlylang
A1: I’m really interested in reading your thoughts. My youngest are 6th graders and the best thing I’ve done is have informal prompts that help them reflect in English for homework. #Earlylanghttps://t.co/iuAKKXAxf8
A1 The primary goal we reflect on in my classes is our community ones-each kiddo has one that helps our community be more positive & is tailored to their behavior in my room. I regularly touch base w kids to see where they feel they are w it #earlylang
A1: With 2nd grade and up, I have periodically used a sheet where students reflect on particular statements and how often they apply to them. I haven't explicitly addressed self-reflection in K or 1 #earlylang
I recently read “la vaca que decía oink” and used it as a springboard into a convo about growth mindset and not giving up when learning languages feels hard. #earlylang
I learnt that from a 3rd grade gen ed teacher in my building! Really can make a difference for those kiddos who are embarrassed; but, I also try to build a trusting & trustworthy community in my rm so kids feel supported even if they don't put a thumbs up #earlylang
A1 part 2: In 3rd grade, we also reflect on how we did as a class in the last couple minutes of every class...our efforts in using Spanish, whether we looked and listened and followed directions... #earlylang
A1: My Ss have Can Do Statements at the beginning and again at the end of each unit. They know they won't hit them all in the beginning but will work toward them #earlylang
My classroom teachers taught me the “put it on your chest and shield it with your hand method” so basically I can see it but no one else. The kids feel like they’re sending me a secret message #earlylang
A2: When we model self-reflection in learning, Ss start to do it in other parts of life. Our goal is that it becomes a part of their daily life! #earlylang
A2 Setting a goal (that is purposeful & meaningful to sts, & age appropriate) provides direction & often meaning for kiddos. Reflecting on where they are on the journey towards meeting it allows them opportunities to take more control of their learning #earlylang
A2 self reflection is an importantpiece of a growth mindset. If you can learn to monitor your progress, you can see that learning is not linear, but overall you progress! #Earlylang
And goals communicate to Ss that we don’t expect them to know everything. Many of my students think they “don’t know Spanish” because they aren’t fluent yet. Not the case! #earlylang
I've begun encouraging kids to say 'I don't everything in Spanish, but I do know some' to combat the 'I don't know anything rock brain. It has really helped many kiddos! #earlylang
Whew! Made it! Kelly, NC, only TK/K Spanish these days. A2: For my little guys, I bfocus most on the positive gains when they self-reflect to boost confidence. #earlylang
Since I have classroom teachers that refer to growth mindset posters, I print the same posters but in Spanish and point to them. The language itself is over their heads, but they recognize the posters. #earlylang

it changes the dynamic completely! And for those kiddos who have been with me for more than even ONE day, you can't tell me you know ZERO words in Spanish lololol (or else I am one bad teacher! :) ) #earlylang
A3 Sometimes a quick conversation on the side (in English) is enough to help students reflect. I admit I don't do this nearly enough, and usually only with struggling kids or behavior issues...#goals#earlylang
A3 I have a visual for our community goals posted outside my door; kids use it to state their goal, & to choose a new one (as appropriate) when they've met the one they've been working on #earlylang
Yes. In my school, classroom teachers do a lot of work around growth mindset, and some have conversations with their classes in preparation for Spanish. They also use the word 'yet' a lot, which is easy enough to express in Spanish in a way kids will understand. #earlylang

A3: I am constantly reminding my students to compare themselves to only themselves, not their peers. How are you today vs yesterday vs at the beginning of the year? #earlylang
A3: Ss need a lot of modeling to know what self-assessment, self-reflection, and goal setting look like. Check out *Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind* (Edited by Arthur L. Costa and @benakallick) #earlylang
A3 I use visuals to ask students to reflect on language proficiency and growth throughout a unit in concrete ways. You can read more about it here: https://t.co/VxJRgVUzjI#earlylang
I have some students who are native speakers, others who are in their first year of Spanish. It would be unfair for them to compare their progress to one another. #earlylang
Used ice cream cone model w 3rd graders last year. Ss had visual in notebook and had to put a check next to the one that best fit them that day. #earlylang
A3: Praise and encouragement for the students who say they don't speak Spanish...with some extra hand-holding at the start, they usually see that they have just what they need to be successful and can come away feeling like they can do what they thought they couldn't #earlylang
A4 Making the language of the goal kid friendly I find goes a long way to also making it measurable. They have a clearer understanding of the expectation/ end result #earlylang
Hey #earlylang - quick commercial - come to our AnnualConference on 4/13-14 - @MARACAS123 and @mmegalea have great #earlylang sessions https://t.co/nFmtIPy7Ew
Out of state folks get our member rate if they're members of their state org. And it's just a short train ride from NYC!
A5: with Ss as young as first grade, I sometimes have them do a quick turn and talk to prove they can do what they think they can. Their partner holds them accountable #earlylang
A5: At the beginning of the year, students recorded peer-to-peer conversations in Spanish using a chromebook. We will be replicating this activity later this month and they will get to see their growth! #earlylang
This would make an awesome topic for another chat! I would love to know how language teachers are using @Seesaw. I have been looking at it and considering it but I am feeling a bit intimidated still. #earlylang

Signing off a little bit early but so happy to join #earlylang again tonight! It’s been a minute and now that my class has ended, I’ll be back as a regular this spring!
A5: This is something that I haven't done much of in K-3. When I taught higher grades, we did a lot more with self-assessment and can-dos, but I haven't done this at the grades I teach now #earlylang
Alright, friends, we are winding down! RF = Reflect + Action: How do you intend to encourage students to use self-reflection and develop a growth mindset in your early language classroom? #earlylang
