#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

A1: We have a new committee this year really working to look at surveys and actually make change. It is refreshing. Began this term with a “check up” survey to see where we were in relation to stated goals from August. #ALEdChat

Q2: With the focus in increased student achievement/growth, what does your school do to review where your students are performing mid-year? Who is involved in the review? #ALedchat
A1: We are looking at strengths and weaknesses to develop goals moving forward. We are looking at learning plans to determine growth. Student data is being reviewed as well. #ALedchat
A1. I think it's important to continually use student feedback to determine where we are. We need to remember that everything that happens in our classroom or schools is feedback. Everything. #ALedchat

A2: Admins and teachers meet to analyze student data and determine next steps in adjusting instructions and support. Teachers meet with individually with each student and his data. Students set goals and establish action steps for growth. #teamwork#aledchat
A2. We continually look for ways to measure our climate, and the environment students are in. Data wise, we MAP test in the winter, and look for growth over our Fall scores #ALedchat
A2: out of my lane here—data people do their data magic outside the classroom. I do it by engaging with my Ss constantly, persistently to see where they are and where we need to go to be better. #aledchat
Q2: With the focus in increased student achievement/growth, what does your school do to review where your students are performing mid-year? Who is involved in the review? #ALedchat
A3: Student set personal goals and identify areas for growth. Information is also shared with parents regarding performance, areas for growth, and effective practices for home. #aledchat
A2: I-ready testing in grades 7-12. I have my Ss complete a data chart comparing their growth. I did an entire lesson on data literacy. Several Ss said they probably shouldn’t have randomly clicked through #aledchat

Our superintendent @rwilkes2010 and district leaders are attending school data meetings to support schools and ensure rigorous conversation leads to proper adjustments in instruction. Scantron, DIBELS, and STAR data are driving the bus. #risingphenix

A2: We look at midyear data. We use STAR, Dibels, fontas and pinnell, seravallo... teachers and administration and tutors, etc look. We make changes based on results #ALEdChat
Q4: Student success is dependent on students being at school daily. What steps does your school take at this time of the year to review attendance? #ALedchat
A1: In @TCSBoardofEd, we are preparing for our mid year reviews conducting by our Central Support Team to track our progress towards our 2018-2019 goals and make adjustments as needed. #ALedchat
For me, it's about relationship with Ss. If you have built relationships, you can measure eveything you need, (climate, growth, etc) from just being with them and observing. On the whole, we do climate surveys and use an advisory "Big/Little" period to measure as well #ALedchat

Q4: Student success is dependent on students being at school daily. What steps does your school take at this time of the year to review attendance? #ALedchat
A2 Pals are meeting with teachers and debriefing with district staff followed by teachers meeting one on one with students. Students are setting goals and measuring their success. #ALEdChat
Q2: With the focus in increased student achievement/growth, what does your school do to review where your students are performing mid-year? Who is involved in the review? #ALedchat
A4: We did a mid-year attendance check before the break. We identified chronically absent students and made sure we had taken the steps needed to support students and families. #ALedchat
A4: Parent contacts for students with excessive absences are made daily. Our social worker is also utilized to make home visits for those students. Short and long term attendance incentives are also in place to encourage students to be at school daily. #aledchat
Define team. I am the 9th and 10th grade ELA teacher. There is a 7/8 And an 11/12. That’s how it is for most subjects. Sometimes there is an overflow teacher like my dh who has one sci, one Alg 1 and one SS, plus career prep. #aledchat

A4: New term=new classes for us so not sure what school does. I make sure my Ss want to be there, know they will miss more than a lecture if they are absent, and know they were missed when they return. #aledchat (pretty sure my non-data answers are skewing this chat 🤦🏻♀️)
Q4: Student success is dependent on students being at school daily. What steps does your school take at this time of the year to review attendance? #ALedchat
A3 The 2nd best feeling is seeing students and teachers meet their mid year goals. The very best feeling is watching them set even higher goals for the end of the year. #ALedchat

Q4: Student success is dependent on students being at school daily. What steps does your school take at this time of the year to review attendance? #ALedchat
I’m with you. I don’t have an absentee problem in *my* classes so not sure what happens elsewhere. By the time they get to me chronic absence kids end up “homeschooling” #Aledchat

A5: Our AP and social worker lead our attendance team. We have an ongoing log with all contacts made for the year. Phone contacts, letters to parents, home visits, conferences, and pre-court conferences. #aledchat
A5: I know this one! We have an attendance officer—with 2200+ students, she stays busy plus someone else who makes the calls home and sends the letters home. #aledchat
Q6: Seniors are half way to graduation. Are there different strategies your school uses that are different this semester to keep at-risk students from dropping out? What have you done or seen done in the past? #ALedchat
Yup. There’s an overflow teacher for grade 8/9 but he only has one unit of each. He “does his own thing” 🤷🏼♀️ doesn’t seem that interested in collaborating. The 7/8 teacher is new and the 11/12 teacher is retiring. #Aledchat
A6: If we have seniors who are at- risk we try to council, be creative with scheduling and flexible to keep them engaged. It is tough, but with encouragementsnd support they can do it! #ALedchat
I think the plan is create a plan this year and tweak it for next year? Idk my students are growing, love my class, and are willing to try anything. Admin is super supportive #aledchat

A6: Just part of a personal strategy: increase in life lectures from me this term. Had one today that had both of us in tears. I teach some for 3-4 years. They listen—sometimes only to me so I take that very seriously. #ALEdChat

Q7: Ensuring students are meeting readiness goals can be a challenge. How does your school ensure students have every opportunity to secure a college & career readiness indicators? Who monitors this? #ALedchat
I’ve tried to talk to him but it’s hard to describe. I haven’t said directly “hey let’s collaborate or discuss” since the start of the year. He was “busy” with sports ball. #Aledchat I do need to try again
Everyone has a responsibility to monitor. The kids love going to the trade school. The trade school looks for new programs to keep student interest. It’s a great partnership #Aledchat
Q8: One subgroup that is of focus is our EL students. How does your school review progress of your students who are EL and ensure goals are being met? #ALedchat
Sometimes that rubs off on others. It would be great if the learning was reciprocated! I always learn from others and people like you can bring back the joy. We all need people to collaborate with because that is what makes all of us better, when we share our thinking. #ALEdChat
FQ: Whether you are in AL or any other state, these topics are relevant to your schools. Which area are you going to focus on as we start a new year in 2019? #ALedchat
Q8: One subgroup that is of focus is our EL students. How does your school review progress of your students who are EL and ensure goals are being met? #ALedchat
A8: We try to identify areas where our EL students are showing weaknesses- are report cards, Scantron and informal asssessmebts aligning or are there areas we need to strategically work on. #ALedchat
One thing I have seen in working with EL students is that we have to find the gap (i.e comprehension has building blocks (inferencing, vocabulary etc.) #ALedchat
