Welcome to tonight's live #edchatie discussion.
As usual, before we begin, please introduce yourself.
Remember to always include the hashtag #edchatie in all tweets for the next hour too - that way they can be added into the transcript later.
Fred Boss, 2nd level Art teacher, currently with @NCCAie and looking forward to discussing "Game-based learning ideas" #gbl for the next hour tonight on #edchatie
Matt, @basham_mark and I have been making a science education games recently! And we are curious as to what sort of things you like to see in games? #edchatie
Hazel second level English and History. Evening all. Throwing first idea in the pot - I love puzzles which I make with Tarsia software, free to download from Hermitech laboratories. Great for key words and definitions. #edchatie
Daire Lambert. Post primary science teacher and special ed teacher. Skeptical of game based learning but interested to see what it is all about this evening #edchatie
My second year teaching now and always trying to find new ways of teaching in fun ways. Using 'Rafa Rafa', a game to teach sectarianism to my 1st year RE class. Students have to create a culture in groups and visit each other whilst upholding the cultures beliefs etc.. #edchatie
Have to say, I loooove games and the design that needs to go on behind them.
A bit like a teacher planning for learning to happen in the classroom.

I am also getting more into designing educational escape rooms, and am part of a project in the Czech Republic designing such a room for the @NaFilM_NaFilM film museum, aimed at primary aged school children. Also working on a chemistry based room. #edchatie

(Am failing already by forgetting the intro!) I'm Claire, an Irish scientist working in UK who has been working with Matt & Mark to develop a game. It's more of a general careers game than directly curriculum linked, but it aims to expose students to lots of science. #edchatie
Hi all, I'm Mark and I have been working with @drclairemurray and @wisegoldfish on a educational boardgame, mainly interested in what teachers would like to get from science games #edchatie
The most exciting but nerve inducing stage in any research study!! I am so very much looking forward to working with schools, teachers and children to hear more about their lives in school!! #edchatie
We are so excited to be contacting schools this week to invite them to partake in the Children's School Lives Study! If your school receives an e-postcard we will be in touch soon to tell you more! If your school is interested in getting involved contact us👉 csl@ucd.ie #edchatie
I'm really impressed with the games @GotGeniusGames is making for science education (mainly in chemistry and biology) - combining good content with sound game design principles https://t.co/0OpbDRzkp3#edchatie
I'm really only just starting to get to know the educational space (thanks to @drclairemurray !), but definitely am interested in setting up new collaborations if anyone is interested! #edchatie
I was involved with @eu_schoolnet quite some time ago and helped to design a game where 3 schools in Europe each took the part of an arm of the legislature, picked a topic of interest, wrote the law for it and then rotated to argue the points #edchatie

It does sound really interesting! It's quite a challenging topic to engage students with, so this is definitely a good way of helping them form opinions about it. Do you think their opinion of the legal system changed after playing? What sort of evaluation did you do? #edchatie

Five of the BEd class of 2018 back to launch their book ‘Including Pupils with ADHD: A Practical Guide for Student Teachers on School Placement’. @DublinCityUni@TeachingCouncil
Done as part of the (now very old) Spring Day event to celebrate the EU - long gone. Not sure if it was ever evaluated formally. Designed with other EU-based teachers too.
Students found it interesting to come up with a concept and outline what would be fair (1/2)#edchatie

We are getting ready to test our game in schools, so we are very keen to understand how to best do evaluation. @ACardinot has done a lot of work on this. We want to make sure the game delivers on its objectives so I'd love to hear what people think works. #edchatie

(2/2) Students enjoyed also discussing and voting on each others' proposals as either the EU Parliament, EU Commission or EU Council. By deciding the common topic it kept the event focused and moving quickly - important for students

I haven’t much experience using technology games. But I utilise simple games in my lessons. In my maths lessons with particularly with students who struggle with arithmetic, I play bowling 🎳
Students bowl to hit the right answer. Very simple, students love it. #edchatie
I'm working on a game called Function Hero, you can know more about it at the link “Function Hero” by Pedro Lealdino Filho. #edchatiehttps://t.co/VMcQ535TkZ
I've also been a judge for the Optics Outreach Games from SPIE, where students from around the world showcase their outreach / public engagement projects including the gamification of learning through different mediums. Some really creative ideas #edchatie
The simpler the better sometimes! That's been one of the big challenges in designing a game. It is too tempting to overly complicate things but by keeping it simple I think we'd all agree we've made a much better game! #edchatie
There are some interesting 'Roll and Write' games which could be used for teaching about probability. Games such as Roll to the Top (https://t.co/tfG4Q6gwjg) could be easily adapted with simple components. You can also play it online (https://t.co/fW5mqbf4w2) #edchatie
Timing is so important for games based learning in school! I think it is critical to keep a game moving but also ensure it is sufficiently complex to keep them engaged. This sounded like a really powerful game Fred. Would you do it again? #edchatie
Basically I'm using Kinect sensor with a dynamic geometric system to make something like guitar hero or just dance, but with mathematical functions. #edchatie “Function Hero” by Pedro Lealdino Filho https://t.co/VMcQ535TkZ

Hi all, I'm Adriana and am a Phd student in Ireland! My research involves the use of games to impact student's conceptual understanding of astronomy #edchatie
I wear a no. of hats. Tough going at times but rewarding. Managing time is crucial. So is cutting yourself some slack when it gets too much. Ultimately if the passion is there it works. I find it keeps me going #edchatie
I think we forget how smart kids are. They totally see through the gimics and will automatically disengage. It can be quite a dark art to balance the game from this perspective though. For it to be fun, a learning experience and sensibly timed is no mean feat! #edchatie
We are just in the test stage and are working through the legal side of things (actually FAR more complex than I ever dreamed!). As soon as we get through that there will be a full website etc. But will send on the info when it's done! #edchatie
I do know of a couple of US teachers who taught history through the Microsoft "Age of Empires" PC game. I think Assassin's Creed could be one like it too (good for Art in places)
#edchatie
Absolutely. They need to know the purpose as much as we do. I try to get feedback from students when I try something new. His needs a very honest classroom and one of total respect for all. I ensure that they know this when feeding back to me #edchatie

We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's #live#edchatie discussion about Game-based learning ideas" #gbl
Any last thoughts, links, questions, ideas?
Still really confused about game based learning. Does student learning actually improve? How much time and effort is required from educator to make these games? #edchatie
For me I use games as to not bore my students. Many students enter my classroom with a negative attitude towards maths and my goal is always to change it. I would use inquiry based techniques to discover a concept and then games as means of assessment. #edchatie
