#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
The continued development of literacy skills among youth can not be solely on the schools. There must be an Eco-system of learning and the family plays a critical role #HipHopEd
Fortunate to have both parents who have graduate degrees. Reading, education, and learning are a big part of my family and will always be for many generations! #HipHopEd
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd and unlike most chats, we don't have a set question and answer format so you can chime in with your thoughts and use the hashtag in your tweets. Thanks :)
Use hip-hop samples to bridge generational gaps and talk about relevant events that happened in the time period close to the respective song. #HipHopEd
I hosted cross-generational poetry readings where the students would create a joint poem with their parents based on an old soul song and a hip-hop song we studied in class #hiphoped
We cannot condemn families that may not be as engaged as we would like in their children’s literacy. We have to partner with families to develop strategies that honor their culture #HipHopEd
I would say identify a lot of songs in hip-hop which have STEM themes because technical writing of this sort helps you become a better writer overall. Writing several 15-page lab reports helped with development & execution of good story telling and comprehension. #HipHopEd
Based on present day Hip-Hop you can create ad-libs to lyrics making the sounds from animals and other items that you may find in books and your neighborhoods. #HipHopEd
Use that public library! It's free and you can for sure level up your literacy as a family with a weekly or twice-a-week visit! Also a great place for community gatherings! #HipHopEd
“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.” A true #hiphoped statement.

The World's Great Classics cover the entire English spectrum imo, I suggest reading them. Sentence structures are mind-blowing. #GulliversTravels#HipHopEd#ReadBro
Great comment, @mathsmarti , definitely could have benefitted from an African-American lit class at my school but I wasn't thinking that way back then. #HipHopEd
Lyric writing, in which students are prompted to find new words to explain difficult feelings, increases literacy and emotional self-awareness simultaneously #hiphoped
My 4 year old showed off his beatboxing skills to his pre-K classmates today because he wanted to. That’s a form of liteacy. Social, musical, kinesthetic, cultural, mathematical & more #hiphoped
Stage one for family literacy can be learning your family’s history. Teachers encourage your students to sit down and interview the members of their families #HipHopEd
Welcome to #HipHopEd tonight we are discussing Hip-Hop as a strategy for promoting family literacy. Share your thoughts and our questions. Thanks for joining us :)
Theory is different from actual practice when it comes to idea implementation. Ex: while volunteering at Boys and Girls Club I tried to get students to make a Robotics Rap and it took 15 min to come up with a bar WITH my help. Gotta be patient and understanding. #HipHopEd
Educators and or libraries can create spaces for playlist and or album clubs that would run similar to book clubs. Key lyrics and other aspects of the songs and events of the day would be discussed #HipHopEd
Perhaps "family" might mean much more in and for HH, esp how HH assumes one's community = family...so generational "divides" or gaps speak to how particular groups understand the meaning, work, and expectations of particular communities #HipHopEd
It’s important to separate the skills of literacy from the content that it is often presented in. Teach the skill and let students identify it within the text of their choice to show mastery #HipHopEd

I would encourage use of SAT and GRE words, AND/OR using an actual dictionary not an online one because the tactical benefits allow you to stumble upon words you would normally never encounter, I.e. For me, the word "impious". #HipHopEd

The examination of various rhyme styles can be used as an example of the need for students to understand different literacy strategies and various language and text #hiphoped
Peep https://t.co/igqxvvSFIS they have a dope freestyle function that randomly generates words as beats play - students can use them to freestyle #HipHopEd

#hiphoped HH has a language of its own we should talk @ the language of the culture and the opportunities for Ss to talk @ how they use language w peers

#hiphoped is primed to push the boundaries of what are legitimized literacies #multiliteracies opportunity for families to collectively explore the variety of literacies within their communities.

Have your students work with their families to come up with music soundtracks to accompany the books that they are reading in class based on character, plot and time of the story. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd#HipHopShakespeare will forever be a brilliant project that flipped Shakespeare and spawned wider discussion/debate re: language and its power. Alliteration, metaphors, linguistic techniques ➡️Hip hop to Shakespeare 🎤 https://t.co/7SJmxUyRVU
When thinking about “literacy methods” instruction we gotta center the need for culturally Sustaining approaches instead of mechanistic reactions. @HSamyAlim and @django_paris told us. #hiphoped

Absolutely, and I wonder if we can find the connective tissue of those "expansive concepts" in the HH stories we tell ourselves and others, e.g. "Where I'm From" type texts #HipHopEd
Social & cultural literacy development should be mandatory within teacher preparatory programs and should be a consideration in planning PD for teachers #HipHopEd
For students who love to play video games, assign them to create a blog post capturing the highlights from what they played and write an article stating what happened. This way they pay attention while playing & work on writing at the same time #hiphoped

For students who like to create beats have the present orally what the emotions and imagery they were working to get across in their production #HipHopEd
What texts do communities consume AND create together? How can we grow communal practices where we foster our consumption AND pushing of our genius? #hiphoped
Teachers go beyond the curriculum and share with your students your favorite books, speeches, movies and music and reveal how it impacts you on a daily basis #HipHopEd#LiteracyIsLife
Really interesting question. I wonder if communities ever get to process / consume texts together other than live performances or local crises / traumas. In the age of smartphones in folks' faces 24/7, I really wonder about this...#HipHopEd
I like that Soror...I'm currently building a curriculum around the use of Hip Hop for the ladies since Hip Hop Roses is an urban lifestyle Publication for women embracing the culture of Hip Hop. #HipHopEd
Sisterly post by @LitheraForbes
Students can talk with their parents and family members about music from their time. Foster those tones and critically engage that music with them #HipHopEd
Fact: Students love when you buy them a book for their birthday. Saw a single copy of the Alchemist (which I bought for a student) get passed around a friend group in my school last year. #hiphoped
Music is just layering of four, eight and 16 counts. How you permutate notes makes you develop your style as an artist. Fantasia by Disney is one of my favorite movies to watch with regards to this. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Much talk of global flows, but IRL, the academy (in general) readily ignores intl artist scholars unless *insert US scholar here* needs a date at *insert foreign uni*. Intl artist scholars in many cases are asked for free labor and contacts w/ no reciprocation
My barber and my little sister introduce me to the book “The Coldest Winter Ever”. That book introduce me to a different understanding of life of urban communities and feminism #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd I digress. 🤦 If you have ss in your classes from non-US backgrounds, do yourself a favor and tap into artists from their home countries. Try to tie some of that in. You'd be surprised how ss soar on both ends of the spectrum
And if you don't know it is totally fine to invite the student to bring in the artist and teach you about them first or better yet, you can co-teach together #HipHopEd

#HipHopEd if you need a starting point, vids, curriculum ideas, feel free to hit me up. I'm always happy to forward resources. Looking for intl artists to come to your classroom? Many of my folks are happy to do so with adv notice + prep🤗.

Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There's not some trick involved with it. It's pure and it's real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things. #HipHopEd#CrisisOfEarthX
I wonder if any of us have ever invited older / younger family/folk to engage in our #hiphoped chats, a surprising literacy- and community-building tool for many

To develop student's spiritual literacy I created "Lyrics and Scriptures" and we will be examining Logic's "1-800" & writing responses using scriptures @HFAPgh on Thursday 11/30 #HipHopEd
Meet members of your family on their technological turf. Ex: My grandma knows I like texting rather than writing letters so she texts me. Ex 2: We bought her a nook so she could read what she wants in modern fashion. #HipHopEd
Collaborate w ss and Community stake holders, develop relationships w/ communities & parents, choose material tht reflects cultural values and ft characters that resonate w/ ss. ➡️Bring books to life thru plays/drama, hip hop, traditional modes of story delivery, etc. #hiphoped
