  • MissJennifer215 Feb 27 @ 9:09 PM EST
Interesting tonight's topic is activism bc my prof. made a statement this morning that "we're all activists" (in the context of aligning ourselves w/ the academy). Regardless if we see ourselves as such & regardless if we've advocating for good or bad. Unique outlook #hiphoped

Hip Hop culture is built upon the need to advocate. As school counselors it is our responsibility to deploy culturally responsive counseling interventions to collaborate with youth and various school staff to advocate for systemic change #hiphoped

In our class, we view hip-hop as an ethos and part of this is social activism. From its history to the words of modern-day MCs, hip-hop is rooted in activism. We study those like K Dot and KRS in this context and let the students take it from there #HipHopEd
  • tdj6899 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 9:15 PM EST
In some vantage points "activism" comes with a level of privilege because some students gather and it is a protest, while other students gather and it is a problem #HipHopEd
  • House_of_N Feb 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. One of the key supports we can give is making sure the message students are trying to express is focused and cognizant of how others may try to tear it down or drown it out. #HipHopEd

  • Knight3k Feb 27 @ 9:30 PM EST
The other thing about activism and pedagogy is that, to be a true activist means using one’s physical body as a vehicle of social transgression. Hashtag activism is not the same as being willing to go to jail for a cause. #HipHopEd
  • TheRealHipHopEd Feb 27 @ 9:30 PM EST

I think alot of folks do their Ss a disservice when they feed them mainstream narratives from manufactured actorvist spaces and refuse to peel back the layers. Darren Seals a grassroots activist confronted #BLM on a reg basis but largely ignored #HipHopEd https://t.co/OJjIzpyKsY

  • tdj6899 - Moderator Feb 27 @ 9:33 PM EST
It is important to create a space where students aren't bullied into having to participate in activism around a cause that may not resonate the same with them as with other students. This bullying can be as dangerous as oppression! #HipHopEd
  • Knight3k Feb 27 @ 9:33 PM EST
To me, tweeting by itself is not demonstrative of activism. Activism is kinesthetic activity which requires a mind body process. #HipHopEd

Expose them to strategy charts such as the mid-west academy Strategy Charts. Let them meet others who are already making grassroots impact! #HipHopEd

#Activism with and not for students means confronting the ways we act as institutional agents complicit in their habitual silencing. True solidarity with youth, as Freire writes, means destroying systems that exploit the most vulnerable people...this includes schools #HipHopEd

So true. When this happens the message gets lost/tainted, loses its authenticity, and becomes counter productive to the original goals.

Activism is strategic like a game of chess. You have to plan your move while thinking ahead to know what the counter move of your adversary will be. Critical thinking and PBL at its highest #HipHopEd

#HipHopEd school counseling means seriously cautioning students who see assimilation into a system littered with corruption as a sign of success. Our role in #activism has to involve facilitating discussions about the contradictions between exploitive notions of success and SJ.

If we look at it from the “root cause analysis” using a tree, the roots (ideologies) create the context that institutionalize the problems. We may be able to work at the trunk (practices and policies) to uproot the issue. #HipHopEd
