#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

Nathan and pack your games for analog game night
Hey there ! Nick from Sydney (temporarily Las Vegas) checking in! I am one of the peeps working on in Aus/NZ.
Carol from Kansas Breakout community member, digital breakouter
A1: I love the instant engagement and buy in I get from participants. The flexibility is also great!
Yes!! Carhenge!!! I only live a couple hours away...
Nice! The Carhenge mecca! (Would make a good clue sometime! LOL)
Hey, I'm Barb IN Nebraska and I love
Kelly who lives in Texas but I'll always be FROM Nebraska
A1: Love that allows Ss to demo learning in a fun way that gives T immediate data
Q1: * What do you find most appealing about using Breakout EDU in the classroom?
Erin, in NC, ITF lover of
I am all about active learning and student engagement. Great for problem solving and critical thinking.
Engaging, engaging and did I say engaging. A great tool for problem solving and collaboration!
A1:By far, the most appealing thing to me about is proving that learning can be fun, difficult, and engaging
I love how encourages and requires teamwork, collaboration an communication!
A1: Engagement of non-traditional learners!
closest target is 7 miles away
A1 how all of my students are engaged and working together
Love seeing represented in and community!
Also is very engaging and ss develop critical thinking skills.
A1: I love the collaboration that brings. Students really see what their classmates bring to the table
A1: Anything that feels different is off to a good start in my book.
A1: I love seeing kids up and moving around as they actually engage in what they are learning. Also love to see Ts so excited too!
Difficult is part of what makes it fun. Shows Ss benefit of perservering
Any more Nebraskans want to join tonight to chat about ? https://t.co/6UfhDc3DXs
Love seeing represented in and community!
Yuck. Amazon delivers. Hopefully by drones by the time we're in Denver.
is all about challenge. Challenge to plan, create, collab, think, solve and reflect. Engagement is unparalleled!
I think would increase student engagement as well as developing a strong class community!
A1: Ageless attraction and engagement
also adapts well to any curriculum and age including teacher PD
I had Ss write reflections after their first one and majority said, "It was hard, but fun!"
A1) It's always interesting to see how they go about solving the clues. There's some that are really good at solving puzzles.
A1: I like the collaborative nature of Oh, and it is fun.
Engaged intrigue,heart-racing drive
A1: lets teachers be creative. Happy, creative teachers = engaged students!
good point! I am working on a blog about the difference between teachers doing a breakout and students in a breakout
A1: Great opportunity for those quiet students to suddenly show their smarts & ideas when others get stumped!
Love that you call is non-traditional learners.
Gives all Ss opp to use critical thinking &collaboration. Comp keeps Ss engaged. All content area can be addressed. Problem solvng
So true. Can make a breakout for pretty much any content. https://t.co/PYcsamVT1W
A1: lets teachers be creative. Happy, creative teachers = engaged students!
That's awesome! Would love to read it when you're done
Please share when you're done, Barb! Would love to read it!
is a great way to start the yr. Get to know what types of Ss you have and how they will work together.
That’s so powerful and usually the last thing we think about when designing curriculum
Hello , sorry I’m tardy, answering fan mail from kids
Donna, ITF in NC! enthusiast x10!
also levels the playing field and gets ss that might not normally work together solve the clues.
Definitely a selling point! Anything that can adapt to multiple environ/learners is a winner
Funny how I'm asked how a Breakout fits in my Curriculum, how can it not?
A1: It's interesting and the Ss enjoy it. Communication, team work, puzzles and problem solving, together at last!
Yes!! The quiet kid gets the chance to be the hero/leader!
. LOVE to hear the cheers when a lock opens! That’s how we want teachers and students to feel about learning!
A cipher would have been fun.
Q2: * Have you encountered any struggles along the way? How have you overcome them?
A2: When Ss change the combinations "by accident"! Learned to take them away as soon as they are solved!
A2) The community is so supportive. Join the FB community. Struggles is wanting to buy ALL the locks and boxes I see.
Bri from IL joining a little late but a lot eager to learn more about
A2: Totally! Learning is messy and the first time I ran a Breakout EDU game with students I forgot to lock the box
A2 I still can't get my directional lock to work! Still attached to the packaging!
love the idea of leveling the playing field and getting different Ss to work together.
A2: Time. We got onto , both digital and analog, in the last two weeks of the year. Next yr I am out of the classroom.
A2: it is hard to sit back and watch them struggle. In our debrief the Ss validated that's what they like. I bite my tongue now
A2 perhaps I should open up and have you help me open my directional lock!
Always good to have you, Mark!
I've heard those directional locks can be so temperamental https://t.co/QAG4tN3tJJ
A2 I still can't get my directional lock to work! Still attached to the packaging!
A2: Ss who "take over" unintentionally. Could happen w any group activity.
You know how to clear it out between tries...right?
I agree! Keeping your face neutral is hard too!
A2: at first I struggled with larger groups but then I started dividing ss into groups and giving them a specific lock w/ clues
A2: I am concerned how it will go with 40 college freshmen working at the same time. Will make smaller groups 4-8 each.
Never would have thought of them accidentally changing combos! Good to know!
amen! And try all the games.
A2: Some Ss were sitting back when groups were too large. Added more boxes and run 3-4 groups per session so all Ss are involved
like, what kind of Edu is it if I build lots of nukes, pass laws to ban nukes, then nuke u?
A2: Set wrong combos, Designed a breakout with a wrong answer, kids found it! Applauded the students for rockin' it!
A2: Biggest struggle w/the directional locks. Sad 2 say just had 2 buy new one. Kid struggles discussed thru reflection
Sounds like a lot of moving parts there.
Ughhh!! Seriously, love the concept, but poor execution. We’re working on our own physical solution. Shhhh
A2 The biggest struggle for me is keeping quiet and staying out of the game until I’m asked for a hint. I’m improving.
I think the hardest thing while facilitating a is keeping my mouth closed!
I agree! The FB group for is awesome!
True, it can happen anywhere. But oops, magic hits and a student has "lost" his voice. BAM! Bwahahaha!
A2: color coded teams/clues/tickets. Ticket=1 min to try at lock box. Ea team starts with 5-7 tkts.
. Agree. I need an intervention.
Return it. Had the same thing happen, store took it back no questions
Squeeze it together 2x (top to bottom) and then enter next combo.
Great idea here for larger groups! https://t.co/NUoOimFzRJ
A2: at first I struggled with larger groups but then I started dividing ss into groups and giving them a specific lock w/ clues
Joining late! I'm Heidi from Nebraska. I made up couple Breakout games to introduce books in my hs ELA class. So awesome!
A2 It's been challenging to find pre made that are geared for ELs and Kindergarten. Any suggestions?
A2 the batteries died on my black light and didn't check them before we played the game. D'oh!
hey, I jumped on the chat, but I realize I have never seen BreakoutEdu, what do you do
it is hard sometimes to watch them when they are so close or way off!
Frustrating when a diff adult comes in and gives too many clues not understanding process
. Yep, And A few wrong combinations here and there due to setting up multiple games at one time
Yes! Is this our 4th Nebraskan here?! Whoohoo! Way to represent!
I’m the worst at this, Donna! I’m constantly wanting to help the learners during a game https://t.co/hH4LSvZz12
A2 The biggest struggle for me is keeping quiet and staying out of the game until I’m asked for a hint. I’m improving.
A2: I'm concerned about full class. Thinking of each getting a digital clue pack and whoever solves that gets to open the phys.
A2: Setting up for next class. I have everything color coded & locks r put into the colored bin-open and set to the correct code
And, if you leave the batteries in the flashlight while locked in the box, it comes on when they shake it.
. Did you find the combo paper in the back?
Froggy Gets Dressed, Dr. Seuss. Did you search by early childhood in search tool?
awesome! I just asked the FB community to come up with ideas for a breakout with
I think might be the 'worst' Hahah https://t.co/THKg0NSBK8
I’m the worst at this, Donna! I’m constantly wanting to help the learners during a game https://t.co/hH4LSvZz12
A2 The biggest struggle for me is keeping quiet and staying out of the game until I’m asked for a hint. I’m improving.
that reminds me I should check my batteries!
I do find myself clearing my throat and pointing at the hint cards when they are WAY off.
Totally missed the beginning of ! Hi all! Justin, fourth grade teacher, lover of and creator of the digital games.
. I’ve gotten better… making growth- not proficient- but making growth!
Always one or two who try. Other Ss complain during debrief. Hopefully S see why they need to let others help
Oops. I've seen the batteries locked up elsewhere. https://t.co/7RhL0FWbb2
A2 the batteries died on my black light and didn't check them before we played the game. D'oh!
I like to hide the batteries in addition to the blacklight
Q3: * How can educators prove to administrators that games can be a valuable element of the curriculum?
A3: Easy. Make. Them. Breakout!
. Never multitask when working with directional locks. They need your undivided attention!
This should be called the "Superstars of Breakout EDU chat" with and here! So exciting
A3: Ask them to participate with a class. See the critical thinking going on.
A3 my principal came to and participated in Teamwork and loved it!
A3 invite them in to watch a game. Even better if it's content based. Prep them ahead of time tho
just glad you're here, Justin! Always happy to have you aboard!
I'm hearing issues with directional locks. Mine jammed on Wed with kids.. so broke out the Locks app and used a padlock instead!
A3: Just invite your admin in to watch/participate in w/Ss. That's all it will take!
A3: Video the activity, document upticks in assessment following Breakout use. Engage the admin in a session!
A3: I think this can be very difficult. Figuring out where you ant it to be in the learning cycle is very important.
Sorry Im late to the party. Im Jim Pike I teach 5 and 6 grade STEAM in LA with Minecraft Glad to be here
. Would love to see this age doing a . I’m in elementary.
Or you could invite them to a GHO for the unveiling of a new digital game, right Justin? https://t.co/66OSyuIFMz
A3 invite them in to watch a game. Even better if it's content based. Prep them ahead of time tho
A3: Have administrators participate in a game and they will be hooked too!
thanks! I had on my calendar and everything! Don't know how I missed it
Totally agree with that. It's an amazing thing what participation in a game can make clear https://t.co/djWhuLvPYH
A3: Easy. Make. Them. Breakout!
A3: invite admin to observe a breakout.
A3. Make explicit connections to standards and skills. But most importantly if they play, they will believe.
A3: Forgiveness, not permission has worked out great for me. (And honestly never had to ask for the former.)
A3) Invite them to participate in a game. Show them how the game addresses the 4Cs.
if they want to see fierce competition and dominant collaboration, yes!
Once admins see how engaged ss are and see how you work though and discuss they are pretty much sold
How does the hair tie work?
A3 - Plan one for a faculty meeting or a PD day at school. Seeing /Participating is Believing
Most admins want data. Use authentic differentiated pre and post assessment when using games. Or qualitative student feedback!
A3: I invite admins to observer when I facilitate with teachers. Share when teachers design games. pics, and student feedback
A3: Pointing out that it’s a tool that can help soft skills instruction can be powerful
We can prove to admins that gaming works by kicking@$$ on standardized test even though they are lame https://t.co/OUsWXzfkwe
A3 If admin sees that the game has tie-in to class (such as intro to book) & that EVERY student is engaged, they should buy in.
Have had some really powerful student blog posts after breakout sessions too!
Thrilled to have you here, James!
A3 Once someone is involved in or sees participants collaborating & thinking critically, no convincing needed
I already got the OK for August at
This. All day. https://t.co/g1ULBo9MVk
A3 - Plan one for a faculty meeting or a PD day at school. Seeing /Participating is Believing
A3: Show connections to 4C's of 21st C learning! Cooperation, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical thinking!
A3 point out the engagement, collaboration, problem solving. This is more important than academic skills.
I think that is true many of the tools we use.
He always has such kind compliments for
https://t.co/XbYRjV0rJi
if they want to see fierce competition and dominant collaboration, yes!
A3: Have admin watch Ss during breakout. Sitting in on debrief also good idea
great minds think alike! I just said the same thing
yeah, the one that works gets the job done :)
Great point! Meaningful pre and post activities can boost it’s authentic integration https://t.co/hr9Oj8FWWx
Have had some really powerful student blog posts after breakout sessions too!
A3: my colleagues teach people working toward admin cert. Can talk to them in classes and host breakout with them.
Yes it is all there! https://t.co/iGMzHSM4wK
A3: Show connections to 4C's of 21st C learning! Cooperation, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical thinking!
yes, the debrief is even more critical sometimes
I put our on our school FB page and got a lot of attention from admin and staff asking about it. https://t.co/2zt5R0Eu9q
Working on this. Bit nervous as I am a newbie! Hoping for total engagement of teachers and admin
If the chat is moving too fast for you to catch all the amazing goodness, the archives will be here: https://t.co/yiB8PuIdns
A3: Benefits: engagement, motivation, and critical thinking during the session; then, critical analysis during debriefing!
A3: include them in the fun! Of course I think games are always a natural fit to learning- I hope most admins think so too
I really love how easy it is to capture the spirit and enthusiasm in photos or video. https://t.co/lXuh6ycLkk
I put our on our school FB page and got a lot of attention from admin and staff asking about it. https://t.co/2zt5R0Eu9q
A3) was a big hit at and Getting adults to have fun in school is a win for their students.
FB community is a great place to toss ideas out and get feedback
It's important that games have reflection for students to further cement learning. Erin is amazing! https://t.co/SH6RydEeKY
Have had some really powerful student blog posts after breakout sessions too!
Trying to watch the draft & contribute. Michele ... Gr 5 teacher in Temecula, CA. Long-time BreakoutEDU addict. 💩 <- Mr. Happens
Being a photographer/facilitator makes it easier to not try to give clues/hints ;)
I noticed it was important to have teachers do a breakout based on standards so they can easily see how it fits in
A3:My Ss saw the sign up and talked abt it to other Ts abt it and my admin heard about it and came in to watch. Totally impressed
Best video in a periscope session. Ss getting frustrated and one says "Come on guys- growth mindset!" https://t.co/yP5WNCKvQO
I really love how easy it is to capture the spirit and enthusiasm in photos or video. https://t.co/lXuh6ycLkk
I put our on our school FB page and got a lot of attention from admin and staff asking about it. https://t.co/2zt5R0Eu9q
This was the Pi Day one I ran four times back to back w/3 min reset time. Happy to get some great video
Yeah - the nice thing is that is so malleable and can be created or tweaked to address any standard
Great! Hope you'll share them via the .General folder in the Sandbox. All have editing rts.
Q4: * Have you ever had students design games? If so, do you have any examples you can share?
A4: Not yet, but really, really want to find a group of students to work on this.
A4: Not for BreakoutEDU, but yes for analog use. Specifically with grammar.
A4: No, but great idea to try for next year. Would be great for summative assessment at end of year
And the teacher is actually free from standing and lecturing in a game!! https://t.co/DK9T0pKA6k
Being a photographer/facilitator makes it easier to not try to give clues/hints ;)
A4 - My own kids (ages 5 and 7) design games for each other a fair amount. Love how clever some are done https://t.co/U24qiKV1v9
A4: Hoping to have my MS Ss design games for other classes in the school as part of my Innovation Station elective this yr.
A4 two of my Ss wanted to, but never got around to it. Next year!
A4) I have not had students design games yet.
A3: I presented to all the coordinators in my district. Lots of interest, so we are creating a BO for our professional plan day
Totally S-centered activity. Had Ss as helpers. They wanted 2 jump in, even tho knew answers
I took a 5th grade breakout & redesigned it for a PD with 30 Teachers- lots of fun
That's awesome! Is it published somewhere - would love to check it out!
Here's an idea. https://t.co/NPfMXypSla
A4: Hoping to have my MS Ss design games for other classes in the school as part of my Innovation Station elective this yr.
I'm trying to keep up with two chats this evening- is talking about
A3 - it's not so easy to learn skills like teamwork and active problem solving on paper-- hits interpersonal skills
I love the reaction you get when adults struggle w/one and you tell them it was for 2nd grade.
A4: My Ss created games for Beowulf/Anglo-Saxon unit. They realized how much thinking it required!
Enjoying the chat! Come join us in 20 mins for !
A4 - huge goal for me next year. Breakout games & SMARTboard games. < - I know they'll choose to make games. 😝
You can have each S design a game to suppement Genius Hour projects.
. It’s a different way of thinking for sure.
A4: I know of a handful of Ts that are creating clubs or classes and having students design games
That sounds awesome! https://t.co/ojFfK9LqOS
A4: I know of a handful of Ts that are creating clubs or classes and having students design games
it's not,I should put it up on the site. It took Ts about 30 minutes to breakout which was great for a 45 min session
. Much more valuable than multiple choice questions.
Q5: * What topic, content, or lesson would you love to have a Breakout EDU game for?
A6: Always love ones that are novel related
A4 I think older students designing breakouts for younger students would be a positive learning experience for everyone involved
A5: Grammar/sentence diagramming and/or literary elements. When I create 'em, I'll share
A6 would love to have a breakout for the Global Read Aloud!
A6: I’d love to have an awesome game that is a TOTAL replacement for teaching a math concept. Maybe slope?
A5: I wish there were more MS math based games. I can write them, but love seeing what others come up with!
I would love to know more about Is anybody going to ISTE?
This is a fantastic idea!! https://t.co/sg1NS8NqWu
A4 I think older students designing breakouts for younger students would be a positive learning experience for everyone involved
I would love to see this. In process of creating PD for start of school year. Please put it on the site
Haven't looked in awhile, are there some for elem?
Q5: Working on a game for library orientation. Help Ss navigate library search functions and book genres.
. We talked about that this week. Maybe a collaborative game through Hangouts based on the book?
A6: I will be creating breakouts for information literacy and library skills
I would like to see a collaboration, We make games with students and come back the next week to see how it went
just one game or would you need multiple as a total replacement?
Yes! We will be there - would love to meet up and chat with you. We will have a bus outside the conference center
A6: Will be working on some for Sci/SS curriculum for 's classroom
I wasn't looking for elem, but the only math ones I found were a couple of Pi Day ones, but I just wrote my own.
We plan on doing something fun. Look 4 a school bus. We’ve transformed the inside into a game https://t.co/5pXTNjk2EE
I would love to know more about Is anybody going to ISTE?
Hi everyone, late to the chat, prepping for excitd to learn more especially
how to blend math with game and have it not be lame
A5: Planning a for the first day(s) for classroom orientation. Then a digital one for Chromebook/Google orientation
Great question. I guess if it was involved enough it could be a single game Maybe multiple parts? https://t.co/z0tzT8rtaz
just one game or would you need multiple as a total replacement?
Hmm... could probably make this happen Hey we need one for Esperanza Rising too https://t.co/4NEf6SoZE2
A6 would love to have a breakout for the Global Read Aloud!
A6: I think anything that students typically find to be a boring topic would make a great breakout- give them a need to know
Do you mean other than and ?
Prob look into making some this year as well, if doesn't mind me hoarding 1 of the boxes. :)
what *wouldn't you want one for???
A6 have to learn frm othrs, will try to do some w/Spanish classes & new course I am creating
Going to ISTE? Look for a school bus for some Fun! I'm so excited to do it!! https://t.co/IhgahPVb8N
We plan on doing something fun. Look 4 a school bus. We’ve transformed the inside into a game https://t.co/5pXTNjk2EE
I would love to know more about Is anybody going to ISTE?
The Global Read Aloud starts in October, we have some time! will be reading Pax
at end of year I did (a very simplistic version, I think) where they which lead to ANOTHER
A5: I'm building one based on Washington's Revolutionary Spy Ring - honestly couldn't be more perfect.
I'd like to have multiple boxes where u breakout of one in order to start next etc etc
A4 Not yet, have done othr games, activ where Ss lead, grt to see thm lead & othr Ss & I learn frm them
You should've seen the kids' reactions thinking they broke out but unsure was clue to another box!
A5 I, too, would love to see & implement games that integrate books chosen for the Global Read Aloud
Wow! I can’t wait to see that! As a fmr history teacher I’m especially excited!
A5: I have never seen one for business/marketing/finance or accounting. I would love that!
A6) Just do it! Kids will figure out and roll with any of the kinks along the way
That’s my favorite, when the learners think they know, then you surprise them
I will be teaching teachers how to teach critical thinking. They will design digital and regular games
A6: Be patient, step back & let kids do it, watch the fun, make sure to debrief
I'm starting to mix time zones ;) Should be interesting at with my calendar
A6 : Think that the advice is just to try it. It might sound weird or crazy - but in all honesty - it's my favorite thing in EDU
Q6: * What advice do you have for newcomers trying Breakout EDU for the first time?
I'd like to create a history based one. I've seen ppl post about date locks
A6: Set one up for some adults, facilitate it, and then you'll have other folks to bounce ideas off of with kids.
A6: Know that things will not always go as planned, but there is much learning that will happen anyway! Don't forget to reflect!
Great advice. Stay out of your own way and let the kids blow your mind
She loved the idea, now it's up to the community to make the games!
A6: Participate in as many games as you can. Go to a local escape rooms. Practice on family.
A6:Practice with the locks ahead of time, especially if you are doing back to back
Start, Go with it, like anythng, have to be patient, learn frm exper, then plan nxt steps, revise, move fwd
Going to an escape room next month!! SOOOO EXCITED!!!!! https://t.co/LlrfBwYfuT
A6: Participate in as many games as you can. Go to a local escape rooms. Practice on family.
A6: Open your mind and imagine what learning could be.
Hardest part for many adults
A6 I say set expectations & explain/walk through the process & effective strategies (+)
Q6 Work with a partner, expect a bit of chaos, explain how locks work, clear expectations, take the locks after they open, have fun
Nice! I like how you have story built in.
A6: Start with smaller groups at first - split your class into teams, 2 sets of everything, but labelled.
A6 (+) seems obvious but even as a veteran T I didn't 1st time b/c stigma of breakout meaning "don't help!" & it was bad chaos!
A6: Beta test it if you're making your own. Gives you a chance to iron the wrinkles and tweak it!
A6 A positive attitude will result in a positive experience. Just dive in and just keep swimming!
yes, read Pax and loved it! Are you on the FB group? we have a thread
4 me too I had to learn to bite my tounge
Thanks for the chat this evening
. Great advice for life in general not just !
I dont let my S publish their games until they can beat them
VERY sound advice! My first one I did whole class w/little direction! We could not control our excitement/energy
Yes, and so many times we don't allow enough time for reflection. Thinking about what you just did is important.
A6- join the Facebook community! It is such a creative & collaborative space for educators working with
and do what's best & what works for you and your class!
Great chat! Thank you all and thanks for the follows. Looking forward to learning with you!
Thanks everyone for letting the crew crash the party tonight!!
Thanks for another great chat. Look forward to using the ideas from tonight
Looking forward to continued chats and meeting many of you at ISTE next week!
Pretty cool to just run into this chat on my feed! Great sharing everyone!
Remember ISTE attendees: Look for the school bus and your own chance to !!!!
Great chat! Glad I was able to join. Thank you
