Hi everyone joining #waledchat tonight! I’m Eric from Ontario, 🇨🇦! Past literacy & numeracy coach going back into the classroom (Gr 4). Also creating resources & educational videos https://t.co/6KGS5o26Tc
A1 Sounds funny, but I move my PD course; I get to see everyone's ideas, collaborate, design, and rethink! I'm reviewing students' feedback, collab with an AWESOME team, & blogging to help keep me purpose-focused. Playing with my kids on the beach daily helps too! #waledchat
A1 I really enjoy having the time to learn new tools or strategies to use the following year with my students. This summer I’m working on Minecraft and @goformative#waledchat
A1: Last summer, I wrote a book (mainly for me to get my thoughts in order for the new year), this summer I am building an online course and working up the nerve to start a podcast!
I guess I like challenging myself grow as an educator!
#waledchat
Seems there are quite a few from the Philadelphia area...I highly recommend this conference coming up October 27. I'll be speaking, along with a lot of other wonderful educators/researchers.
https://t.co/qe906ilgyT#Waledchat
A1: I enjoy learning about and incorporating new instructional strategies. I've been making some hyperdocs for the first time and some flipped instructional videos too. #waledchat@ERobbPrincipal@KTuttleEDU
A1: I love getting new, creative ideas for flipping the classroom and implementing more of an inquiry-based model. This summer, I've been completely re-planning curricula to fit my new role. #waledchat
A1: I love having more time to read (on the beach of course!) professional books and getting inspired to plan some new things to try in the upcoming school year #Waledchat
A1: I enjoy catching up on reading so that I can get re-energized, inspired, and feel ready to take on the new year. This summer, I have been reading as many @dbc_inc books as possible. I have been sharing with colleagues along the way! #waledchat#DBCbooksforthewin
A1: I really like reading a new book that can grow me and following awesome chats that can inspire me over the the summer to get ready for the new year. #Waledchat
A1 Something I’ve enjoyed doing over summer if reflecting on the previous year and tough lessons and figuring out ways to revamp the lessons to increase learning of students #waledchat
A1: I absolutely LOVE buying new things to decorate my classroom. I have a bold color scheme currently going on and love to add to it. The target teacher dollar spot is amazing! Making my classroom my own makes me love being in there even more! #waledchat#targetteachers
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Please introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and tag someone you would like to see join you here tonight! #waledchat
I really like attending PD as the year ends bc I get the opportunity to attend conferences & hear from other educators. We always come back with new ideas & the excitement for a new year #waledchat
A1 I love reading during the summer. That and some quality family time with my wife and kids. It just helps me recharge, relax and get excited about a new school year. #waledchat
A1 I act like a kid. I go shopping for school supplies and new shoes. Then...I go to my room that is completely torn down from the previous year and I create the Land of Magic! #waledchat
A1: Over the summer I enjoy immersing myself in what I like. Reading, Comics, Food, Music, Museums, and then find ways to bring that into my classroom #waledchat
A1: I love having the time to reflect and get organized! I’m trying some new things in my classes and I love that I have some time to really sit down and work through how exactly I want things to look and feel, and how I can make that happen. #waledchat
A1: Not to sound vain but summer is the best time to do a makeover lol it makes me feel rejuvenated for the year. Can't start a new school year with messed up hair and nails or I will feel even more lazy than I look #waledchat
Hey #waledchat just walking in the door from 8 hours at the beach!!!! Can you say SANDY!!! Going to pop in and out as I put these little wave jumpers in the shower!!
A1: Just like when I was a little kid, I love getting new school supplies and setting up my teacher binder! About to begin year 20 and it never gets old! #waledchat
A1) Get creative w/ lesson design! Most proud of 7 close reading lessons that pair with 7 Hamilton Musical songs. Total classroom highlight for kids & myself! This summer #inquirymindset book study on Flipgrid has been the best PD #waledchat
#waledchat A1 Just got back from LA. Loved my tour of the @Reagan_Library. Lots of pictures to share with our students in the #80s class. Truly an honor to learn about our 40th President!
A1: The biggest thing I do over the summer is rest and relax with my family and refill my cup so that I am able to give 100% during the school year. I also work on my room so that it’s done before we head back for trainings and I can focus and not stress about it. #waledchat
A1: To prep for a new school year, I love scouring blogs & sites for content related resources. I enjoy reading others' POVs & unique perspectives on using resources or approaching a particular topic. Really helps me keep things fresh. #waledchat
A1: Just like when I was a little kid, I love getting new school supplies and setting up my teacher binder! About to begin year 20 and it never gets old! #waledchat
A1 reading, attending and moderating twitter chats and just really forming global relationships that I know will have a huge impact on my work in the classroom this year! #waledchat
A1: I love to go in and spend a few hours in my room, resetting it up and getting things organized without a time or pressure crunch...after July. During July I love reading! #waledchat
A1b - I also love to write. Been finishing a book on teaching. It’s helped keep me grounded and realize how important our jobs are each day. #waledchat
#waledchat A1 - Spending time with my 2 young kids. By the time the summer is over, I'm ready to go back to work! They wear me out more than middle school kids!
A1: I spend my summer reading! (Yeah, I know typical English teacher response). But I read a mix of professional texts, world lit for my class, and just for fun books. Balance is key! #waledchat
A1 This summer I'm reading new text for moving to grade 7 - and making #hyperdocs using Google Slides/Sites! I also love to dig in my garden (relieves stress and makes a nice place for hanging out in the school year) #waledchat
A1) I like to complete the three "R"s Rest, Relax, and Reenergize! I like to find a book that does not focus just on education but on self reflection that can be applied to any part of life! #waledchat
A2: Rest? What's that!? Next question! All right, I'm kidding . . . kinda.
Rest is rare, so I try to spend it with those most important in my life, building memories. I do what I do FOR these people and that time w/ them. Otherwise, I wd start to resent my job.
#waledchat
A2 You have to be ON as much as possible! I find my best ideas come when I have energy and my reactions are best then too! Im great at resting during the summer but have to improve my balance during the school year! #waledchat
A1: Reading all of the books that I've purchased throughout the school year. Reflecting on what I can do better/more of in the new year. And this summer attending #ISTE18#waledchat
A1: I've been listening to podcasts and reading PD books I don't get to read during the school year. @cultofpedagogy and @LearnLAP have been my recent faves. #waledchat
A1 - spending time with the athletes during camps and summer games. Great way to stay in touch with new and current students as well as strengthening relationships. #waledchat
A1: I really enjoy reflecting on wins and losses from years past to create new and improved plans for the new year. A new school year has endless opportunities. I love the excitement of getting ready for a new year of possibilities! #waledchat
how could I forget twitter chats!? I don’t feel bold enough to moderate my own but I have enjoyed being part of so many this summer, learning from others, and making connections! #waledchat
A1- First, I love the summer slowdown...part time hours and being mom...this year I’m transitioning into a new role so I am excited about planning energetic PD for my teachers! #waledchat
Q1: I enjoy reading books that inspire changes in the new year. Currently, I have been immersed in @TaraMartinEDU's Be REAL. It has been an incredibly inspiring read. #waledchat#tlap#LeadLAP#inspire
A2: Rest is everything. If we're run down, whether it's from work or outside life, it will absolutely show in how we run our classrooms or buildings. We have to be able to recharge in order to best serve our community. #waledchat
A2: When done well, teaching connects us with so many different people's stories and is a lifelong process of growth. If you never stop to smell the roses, you'll just notice when you get pricked by the thorns, and give up on the garden of the future. #waledchat
A2: We need to rest so we can be ready for new goals, tasks, & adventures. If we don't take time to rest, we may not be at our best & be able to help support others in the way we'd really like to. In order to help others become their best, we have to be at our best. #waledchat
A2: We give so much throughout the course of the school year. We need time to heal and refill our tanks so we can freely give the following school year. Hard to pour from an empty bucket. #waledchat
A2 It takes a lot of energy to be me! I create the excitement which creates the culture of engagement in my class. It takes a lot of rest and coffee from @DarkMatter2521 to have that energy! #waledchat
A2: I think it helps give us perspective... we can get so wrapped up in the day to day that having some time to relax and step away helps us see the big picture #waledchat
A2: Rest is important because you have to fill your bucket before you can do the same for others. In order to give our kids 100%, we have to recharge 100%. #Waledchat
A2: Because we don’t get much during the school year! I feel like I’m preparing to hibernate or something all summer—my cells are storing all this extra rest and calm to get me through the (happily) exhausting school year! #waledchat
A2: In all honesty rest is essential. Each of our students have a different set of needs that we try to help. It’s draining emotionally. But so rewarding. #waledchat
A2: Rest is important because you have to fill your bucket before you can do the same for others. In order to give our kids 100%, we have to recharge 100%. #Waledchat
A2 To give yourself to re-energize. Clear your mind and allow it to process all that we did over the past year and how we can channel it into the new year. We give so much that we have to pause and allow ourselves to catch up to our minds. #WaledChat
A2: We do SO much in 180 days.. it's so important to make time to rest. Burn out can come fast.. especially when things get hectic like in the beginning of the year. We need to take things one at a time and remember we cant do everything in one day.. #waledchat
A2: Rest is vital because we give of ourselves every single day, all day! If you don’t take the time to rest and recharge, it’s easy to lose focus of your why and to let negativity creep in. You can’t pour from an empty cup. #waledchat
A2: Rest is so important in our teaching profession in order to refuel & recharge for the coming year. What appears to others to be two months off is more a collection of "retroactive time off" for all of the evenings, early mornings, & weekends spent during the year. #waledchat
A2: Rest is so important in our professions because we pack so much of our workload into 9 months of the year. Our jobs are physically, mentally, and can become emotionally demanding. We need our rest so we can always be our best selves for our Ss and for each other. #waledchat
A2- Rest is so important because educators who do it the right way leave it all on the "field" (classroom -school) and rest has to happen to ensure we can continue to give our best to our kids. #waledchat
A2: We take care of so many growing minds during the school year. It's important to get our rest during the summer and on the weekends to do something that takes care of us! #waledchat
A2: Personally, with my little favorite people, my brain often has 40 tabs open and is running at maximum speed all school year. I need to take time to quiet my brain down or my hard drive crashes hard. #waledchat
A2: We need rest because we do so much more than just teach. We coach, comfort, entertain, parent, listen, plan, conference, encourage, etc etc #waledchat
A2 - no matter how much we love kids and our jobs, rest and recovery is part of being healthy. Also, rest is a great stress reducer. Many times we are so busy that we don’t take time to actually breathe. #Waledchat
A2. Our profession often requires us to put everyone else before ourselves. In order to serve, be present & be REAL, we need to "put our oxygen masks on before we assist others," otherwise, we don't do anyone any good. #waledchat
A2) Summer break rooted in agriculture? I am giving all thanks to the farms of the past. Rest, reflect, recharge. Love that we get to restart with a blank slate. Also giving thanks to the Enlightened thinkers. #waledchat
A2: because as T’s we tend at times to push ourselves to do more and more and not take any us time. We can burn ourselves out with all that we try to do #waledchat
A2: It is so important to rest in our profession because we can't pour from an empty cup. Our Ss deserve the best. We have to recharge over the summer so we can be that for them! #KidsDeserveIt#Waledchat
A2: As I’ve heard many times, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Teaching can be physically and emotionally draining at times. It’s so important to take time out for self care. #waledchat
A2: We take care of so many growing minds during the school year. It's important to get our rest during the summer and on the weekends to do something that takes care of us! #waledchat
A2: Self care is one of the biggest areas that I have found people mention on our #ShareMOEdu podcast. It is hard to make the time and commit to it. #waledchat
A2: We take care of so many growing minds during the school year. It's important to get our rest during the summer and on the weekends to do something that takes care of us! #waledchat
A2: Our job demands total participation - we always need to be on. And we must recharge those batteries. The fact that I feel antsy sitting at the beach is an indication that I don't do it often enough! #waledchat#selfcare
A2) Rest is necessary but my weakness as my work is my passion. Working on being aware of unplugging is a goal so I don’t get run down before the race starts! #waledchat
A2: Self-care is vital to maintaining the energy that's necessary to be successful in the classroom. If you are going to bring it every day, then you did need to be ready to bring it every day.
#waledchat
A2~ well rested mind & body is able to be ready, willing & able to be the best versions of ourselves in a profession/calling that deserves top notch attention & delivery #waledchat
I've been doing that a lot this summer. And now summer is almost over and I have not taken much time for me. Need to disconnect at some point. #waledchat
A2: Being in education is hard work, no matter what role one plays. We all give so much to those who need us throughout the school year and need to take time to rest so we have more to give. #waledchat
A2) It gives us a time to take a look from the outside and focus on ourselves. A lot of time we are so focus on the tasks that need to be completed throughout the year that we forget to make time for ourselves. #waledchat
#waledchat A2-Summer is important because everyone needs a break from one another. Teachers need a break from the kids and we need a break from each other as well. Beyond the obvious benefits of not working for like 2.5 months, that is.
A2 We need to be able to constantly recharge ourselves to deal with the complexities of our jobs. We are always 100% on with our students; to have that energy, we need to make sure we relax and get that energy back. Finding balance is important, for us & for our kids. #waledchat
A2- Rest is so important because educators who do it the right way leave it all on the "field" (classroom -school) and rest has to happen to ensure we can continue to give our best to our kids. #waledchat
A1: To get ready for the new year, I try to freshen up what I am doing by learning from others in the field. I am reading a few books, currently looking at @casas_jimmy#culturize#Waledchat
I can so relate to this! I have actually asked my wife to help keep me in balance. At certain points she reminds me, other times I'll give my phone to her. #waledchat
A2: We need rest to be at our best. I'm just coming off 6 weeks of summer school with no break from end of regular year. While summer school was only 4 hrs a day I hit a wall last week and just was not at my best. We all need to recharge to be our best. #waledchat
A2: Rest is so important in our profession to recharge our batteries and keep us fresh and ready for whatever our Ss present/bring to us. We have to be ready for any and everything. #waledchat#edchat#educhat#inspire
A3 Those last two weeks get busy, but I take each kiddo to Disneyland just us because our passes are valid the week before I return to school. Great tradition to wrap up summer; this is year 3! :) 18-19 will be extra busy: my husband starts student teaching next month! #waledchat
A3: Get out of town and unplug.
Even though I say that, I have to be honest: I did not unplug this summer. Here and there, yeah. But I have been too excited about all the ways I'm growing to pull back completely for an extended period of time.
#waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A2 the emotional and intellectual energy that teachers expend is crazy. Time for rest and recharging is important to prevent burn out. Have learned to make this a priority after 28 years.#waledchat
I have a really hard time "rest", during the summer I want to be "on the go" bc during the school year is busy busy busy that I get home, cook dinner, & relax w the fam. I do LOVE me some cat naps so I've taken advantage of those during the summer :) #waledchat
A2: Rest is important in ANY profession #waledchat Teachers put in so many hours of active work during school year Time away helps us avoid burn out! Rest gives us energy for when we are back at it!
ive made sure to disconnect as much as possible but i tend to book my summer to do things. Like now im in San Diego. Nxt week im teaching a 4 day bible camp and the following week im in Disneyland. #waledchat
A2: I think rest is important for educators b/c in rest we can reflect & think of new ideas. Hard to innovate & create when “stuck in the weeds”. Throughout the school year we’ve climbed the mountain. Need to take time now to enjoy the view! #waledchat
A3: My stretch is beginning now, which I love, because I have a focus and something to work on. Fortunately, it coincides with the birth of my twin nieces (!!!), so I plan on soaking up time with them to rest and recharge. #waledchat
A3: This is an area I have been struggling with this summer. I've started to cut out more time to be present to overcome it. I also have not been doing as many chats recently. #waledchat
A3 This is getting harder and harder to do with the 24-7 connectivity. I literally have to make the conscious decision to completely disconnect on certain days. Going to places with no internet is one way of doing it. #waledchat
A3: Summertime is family time; take time for go for walks with family (fur family too!), have family dinners, & spend time together. Vacation is perfect for doing this too! #Waledchat
A3: I want to give 100% in everything I do, so when I leave work I owe it to my family to give them 100% of my undivided attention, just like when I'm at school my focus is on the Ss & Ts in our building. I'm more effective & happier when I respect these boundaries. #Waledchat
A3 By being intentional. Be realizing the realities of what we need to be our best and setting time aside for it...even if we have to schedule it. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3: This is "Life Fit" from @casas_jimmy and #Culturize in action. There will be times where school demands are high, and others where family gets the win. We need to be OK with the ebb and flow of this process. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3: Disconnect from technology, and read a book that's not educationally related. I love seeing everyone motivated to read a "school" book, but take some time to read whatever you want! #waledchat
A3 We must set time aside either a day during the week or a weekend for those around us to assist in the separation of family/friends and work. #waledchat
A3: I have stopped taking work home on the weekend. I get as much done as I can during the week, and use my weekends to recharge and spend QT with my family. #waledchat
A3. We have to be intentional about making the time for our families, especially during the summer. Better to give ourselves set times to work on school periodically throughout the summer so we can play with our family. They need us too. #waledchat
A3: To pause from school & rest, I have to remind myself that while I want to be prepared for a new school year, my undivided time with others will soon be more limited. Sometimes this means working on things during later hours to make time for everything. #waledchat
A3: Set time aside for school during the summer, anything outside of that should be away from it all. Spending time outside and/or away from home helps me stay off tech and make the most of my time with family and friends. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3 - my family is refreshed in the house of the Lord. Spending time every Sunday surrounded by family and friends and the routine after church dinner. #waledchat
Family & friends first. VOLUNTARY late summer nights spent working are miraculously productive &fun! (nights not as late now that I am mom to a 1 year old, she has the same alarm!) #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3: I check in my friends and set time to hang out. I make it a priority to make sure I see them and spend time with family before things get to hectic at the beginning of the school year. #Waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3: For me, it’s so helpful to have something to look forward to every day and take a step away... dinner with my husband. It has become sacred time over the past decade. #waledchat
These questions have been circling in my mind a lot recently. I feel like I've been stretching myself really far in a season that I should be resting. #waledchat
A3 Be intentional. 30/30 or Pomodoro People first. We thrive from our interactions with humans. Especially those who support us the most. Draw on that strength.#waledchat
A2 I think rest is important when we are off school because we give 150 % when we are there. No gas in the tank to give If your running on empty. #waledchat
A3: Schedule non-negotiable non-school breaks like a couple day family adventure. If it’s left casual, we’ll put it off. Got to commit to still honoring our families (and ourselves). #waledchat
Rest is vital. Educating, no matter what part you play, whether it be teaching or administrating it is like a full, contact sport. Everyone needs a breather to be at their best, not to mention, it is the perfect opportunity for reflection. #Waledchat
A3) Family & friends first. VOLUNTARY late summer nights spent working are miraculously productive &fun! (nights not as late now that I am mom to a 1 year old, she has the same alarm!) #waledchat

#waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3: In the summer I try to plan one fun thing each day. It might be something simple like take the dogs to the dog park or lunch with a friend but little things with the people I love lead to happiness! Maybe I should keep this approach all the time🧐🧐 #waledchat
A3: I totally ignored my kids tonight to participate in chats (this is my third) and connect with other educators...learning is amazing but not at the expense of our families! This weekend I'll disconnect and just focus on family. #waledchat
A3) I’m very intentional with this. I take a 10 day stretch off of work in August. I read a book for pleasure, focus solely on my children and dogs. It’s hard...but wouldn’t change it! #waledchat
A3 - I never used to pause and take a break. I’d be coaching, teaching and leading all summer. Then I realized how taxing it was. Now I PLAN my time. Family time is family time. Also, I prioritize what is important. Can’t be all things, to all people, all the time. #Waledchat
A3: I don’t really have that problem. If you bring what you love doing into the classroom, work melds with life. But I know have to make sure I spend time to focus on my own children, and what inspires them...and then do it with them. #waledchat
Exactly! I no longer am bothered when we go somewhere and the internet signal is weak. . .that's my sign that I don't need to be on tech I need to be present! #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3: My fiancee is super great at planning some kind of trip in the summer, usually about a week and it really takes me out of a school focus for a minute. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A3. This is a tough one for me right now. But it is so important to realize that our family & friends outside of school, deserve us to be present for them as much as we are present for our kids & staff. Sometimes, we just need to walk away & take care of our soul. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
So important to surround oneself with positive and great people. Knowing the ones that will always be there but aren't afraid to tell you how it is... critical! #Waledchat
#waledchat A3- It is hard, because I want to spend my summer on different side projects with the house or with writing. Traveling is a good way to get away and be forced to disconnect. Also, my kids kind of force me out of my work - they want all of the attention.
A3: I struggle with this part. Setting small tasks for EDU life, makes me feel accomplished, so that family and fun time can take center stage. #waledchat
A3 In my case I'm at the cottage, not in the city so it is easier to unplug so to speak. I have friends and family and all the critters I feed to keep focussed on other things 😂 #waledchat
A3: Moving to a new house right at the end of the school year helped to focus on things other than school. So much to do, no time to think about school, haha! #waledchat
A3) Be intentional plan your breaks! Even if it is just traveling somewhere that is disconnected from everything that makes you think about school. A lot harder than it sounds! #waledchat
A3: When I start to think to much about school that is when I head to the moutains and go for a hike. I see a lot of hikes in the next couple of weeks. #waledchat
A3: I feel like I'm in this right now. I fortunately have a vacation planned in the next few weeks where I will be forced to focus on family, fun, and life! I like to plan a vacation for the end of summer so I end with a rest and family focus. #waledchat
A4: This is going to be a great year. We are going to try new things and try some things we are familiar with. We will have wins and we will have losses. And I will NOT give up on you! I am going to be your biggest fan this year, and together we CAN do great things. #waledchat
A4: I want my students for next year to never stop believing that they can achieve and succeed. I want them to realize how amazing they are and to never let someone else make them feel like they aren't. #waledchat
A3: Ummm...I haven't figured that one out yet. We just have to make time for others. Preparing can be all consuming. You always want to be so prepared. Seems like that's what our summers are for...preparing and getting a jump on everything. #waledchat
Yes, @VickiRD13! There were some days this past school year when I would stay a longer so I could be more present when I got home & other days when I walked out right after duty b/c I knew it could wait until tomorrow. #waledchat
#waledchat
A3 My newest way to break away from the hustle is walking to a nearby pond to feed the turtles! It allows me a peaceful place to reflect on my day and my daughter enjoys it too! 🐢 #waledchat
Q3 I like to travel and explore...and when I'm at home I go into hermit mode. I make huge lists of things I want to do, I stock up on books, I have a staycation...just really stay quiet and try to fill myself up with calm #waledchat
A4 There is such a thing as having fun and working hard at the same time. You will experience it a lot in my class. Let go of old habits and experience learning with me... #waledchat
A4: Immerse yourself in English for fun - music, movies, social media - find the joy in language learning and learn the rhythm of the language. #waledchat
A4: If I could tell my Ss one thing today to get them ready for the coming school year, it would be to approach everything with a #growthmindset because anything is possible...and it's not hard, it's just new. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A2 In our profession, we really do not get a break. I am always thinking about a kid that does not have a good family life, what can do to help them understand a concept, and how I can help build a better relationship with the parents. #Waledchat
A3: I think our profession is guilty of some self inflicted wounds when it comes to taking care of ourselves. In the name of “what’s best for kids”, we tend to disregard our own well being. Folks: An exhausted teacher isn’t what’s best for kids! #waledchat
A4: that my class will take you on a journey that you never believed would be possible in a classroom. Also, better brush up on your superhero movies. #waledchat
A3. This year that has been a HUGE struggle for me. We have a lot of big changes in store for the 18-19 school year that require a lot of summer work. I AM looking forward to slowing down and starting rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast. #Waledchat
A3: I want to give 100% in everything I do, so when I leave work I owe it to my family to give them 100% of my undivided attention, just like when I'm at school my focus is on the Ss & Ts in our building. I'm more effective & happier when I respect these boundaries. #Waledchat
A4 I would tell them: no matter who you are, no matter what you do, I will never stop believing in you and supporting you. Also sending all my kids letters this summer.

#waledchat A4 - I don't know what I would say to my Ss that would make any difference. They are 12, so they probably aren't going to listen the first time I tell them something anyways.
A4: I would tell them (which I get to tell them a few weeks before school starts!): get ready to be loved, to make new friends, to have fun and to get creative! #waledchat
A4: I would tell Ss to be curious, excited and believe... Passions will be embraced and failure will be nothing but a stepping stone towards your personal greatness!
#waledchat
A4 - Set goals for the year. So often, students don’t have a plan. By setting short, medium and long term goals it really helps keep kids on task. Think SMART model! #Waledchat
Truth! This is a highlight of my favorite lessons. The days when the period starts and before you know it, the end is there with nothing but memories of fun times learning and growing. #Waledchat
A3: Take a step back and realizing that your "free time" will soon be non-existent. Live in the moment and enjoy your friends and family the last few days of summer. #waledchat
A4 You're walking into our new room with a clean slate and into an open heart ready to keep you safe. We'll get to the curriculum, but I know they come with so much baggage sometimes. #FreshStartNewYear#WaledChat
A1 I love catching up on my reading. I always find a new children’s author to intro to my class. I usually take several PDs during the summer as well. This summer is #HiveSummit, #BuildMathMinds, #TeachWithTech a district ELA training and @Seesaw PD #waledchat
I would tell them that they will be loved like crazy, accepted for who they are on the good days & not so good days, learn together lots of great things, make lots of messes & most importantly laugh like cray-cray #waledchat 😊
A3 My family helps me disconnect. When I go on family trips, sit by the pool, go to the museum, my kids help me relax, recharge and have fun. My wife always helps keep me accountable. And I have an amazing PLN that just keeps me grounded and makes me laugh. #waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A4. Be warned..you will:
Be loved beyond measure.
Challenged more than you thought possible.
Supported in ways you haven't been in the past.
Have people there for you during the good, the bad, & the ugly...
Because you are worth it!
#waledchat
Classroom expectations:
1. Have a vision. (Hope and dream!)
2. Be a learner, not a finisher. (Growth over grades)
3. Lean into struggle. (Do hard things.)
4. Feed your passion. (Do fun things!)
5. Own your education. (Invest in yourself.)
6. Own our culture. (Help others grow.)
Truth! This is a highlight of my favorite lessons. The days when the period starts and before you know it, the end is there with nothing but memories of fun times learning and growing. #Waledchat
A4: You will not always know how to do everything. If you do, then I’m not doing my job right. So let’s make it safe for us all to struggle together. Let’s honor the process of learning for each other. And we’ll do great things. Be unafraid. #waledchat
I would tell them that they will be loved like crazy, accepted for who they are on the good days & not so good days, learn together lots of great things, make lots of messes & most importantly laugh like cray-cray #waledchat 😊
A4 This pulls at me @MakeThemMastrIt! Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Whether it’s in a whole group, small group, or 1:1 setting, feel safe to ask! Teachers want you to be and feel successful! #waledchat
A4: This is going to be a great year. We are going to try new things and try some things we are familiar with. We will have wins and we will have losses. And I will NOT give up on you! I am going to be your biggest fan this year, and together we CAN do great things. #waledchat
A4: Know that I believe in you and you CAN and will do hard things! But, you are never alone because you have me and our class family supporting and celebrating you every step of the way. #waledchat
A4: It's going to be a new beginning for Ss as we reconfigure from k-2 to prek-6. It's going to be different but we're going to have a lot of fun! Let's rock it together. #waledchat
A5 Daily: we TRY to hit the beach twice: in the early afternoon for castles, sandcrabs, waves. Then again for the sunset. It's where we're happiest. (If I don't, I feel wasteful!) Weekly: we are Farmers Market people :) #waledchat
A5: Going to church! All my close friends are there, and I serve as the sound engineer for our service (which has been incredibly fun to learn how to mix live music).
There are amazing teachers who attend there too, like @CoelloTeach#waledchat
A4 - I’d also add having fun and enjoying the experience. For many high school kids, they dread school. The years go quick. Make them memorable and exciting. #Waledchat
A4 This pulls at me @MrPStrunk! Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Whether it’s in a whole group, small group, or 1:1 setting, feel safe to ask! Teachers want you to be and feel successful! #waledchat
I was so excited when I first "discovered" the amazing possibilities to connect and learn from so many educators. I, like many educators suffer from FOMO but I definitely don't want to miss out from opportunities to spend quality time with family & friends either. #waledchat
A4: Get ready for an amazing journey in fifth grade. You are going to have incredible experiences that will hopefully make a significant impact on your life. Be prepared to have fun and learn at the same time. #waledchat
A4: Find a book, a good cuddle spot and ask an adult in your house to stop what they are doing & sit together to cuddle and read. You read, they read I don't care, just love and read together! #waledchat
A5: I enjoy late nights with @LBStrunk watching The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Blue Bloods. Also enjoy days where we make some of our favorite foods, like Pizza Bread! #waledchat
A5: We recently attached my parents' old Burley to my bike, and I love taking early morning or evening bike rides with my son in tow. It's something we both love & a great way to clear my head while getting a little bit of exercise in. #waledchat
A5: As long as the weather cooperates, I enjoy spending time with family & friends at the pool. You relax, reminisce, reflect & mostly laugh and have a fabulous time surrounded by the ones you love. #waledchat
A2 Rest is so important because our profession is mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting. We give our all for our Ss and try to balance family as well. Summer and vacations allow us time to catch our breath. #waledchat
A3: Perhaps it sounds shallow, Ts love to schedule, so schedule in purposeful, meaningful interactions. If you need to do something educational, choose to do it w others by attending conferences. I loved #readingsummit this week. #Waledchat
Q3: Sometimes during the summer there will come a stretch where we start to focus so much on school we forget those around us. How do we take a pause from school to rest?
#waledchat
A5: Something totally non-school related I enjoy doing DAILY during the summer is spending as much time as possible with my family. Because they are my world, I am reminded to treat my Ss they way I would want my own kids treated by their Ts. #waledchat
A5: My gym trips throughout the week are one of the few times I truly unplug and invest in me. I also enjoy date nights/day trips with my wife!
#waledchat
A5: I spend every day outside walking or exercising in some way in the sunshine. I wish that I were more consistent with this during the school year, but I am always in the sunshine during the summer. #waledchat
Q5: Cooking. I love cooking, and trying new food. I don’t have the time during the school year to cook like I’d want to for my family. It relaxes, inspires, and drives me to be better. #waledchat
A5 - I love movies and music. I’m lucky enough to have a media room in my house. I watch YouTube and old movies. It’s such a nice change of pace. Goodfellas, Bronx Tale, Caddyshack #Waledchat
A5: Focusing on getting healthy with good food and running - so great to see how consistent effort leads to real growth (or loss, in this case 😉) #waledchat
A3: My kids help me take a break from school prep to play kitchen or princess or cars. My husband is very supportive of teaching, and also knows when to say we need you tonight. That helps keep me accountable to unplugging for a bit every night. #waledchat
A5 more than anything I just love having more time with my family. It’s been a great summer of rest and reflection but way better because of being able to do things together! #waledchat
A5: It's no secret that I'm a master of @PokemonGoApp. Otherwise... just being outside. Fresh air. Kebabs. I sleep 3 hours max every night in the summer. Love it. #waledchat
A5 I've been 'clearing out' - organizing, purging, going through memories. I'm enjoying it because I know it's opening me up to new ideas to flow in - both at home and my classroom. Oh, and I like to read and take long walks with my dog, too. #waledchat
A5. I love reading to all hours (yes, that is a daily thing) and adventuring! I have been trying to go on one adventure a week this summer...and have loved every minute of it! #waledchat
A5 When I’m not spending time alone with my pup Ruby, I enjoy learning more about my partner’s hobby farm and the different breeds of birds and types of animals he has. #waledchat
Hey #waledchat . . . So sorry I missed this after the kind invitation. For the record, I was not writing; I was out for a long walk to get ice cream with the hubs. Does that count as summer self-care? 😜🍦❤️
A5: Fires and pool parties in the backyard. Found a landscape company that was selling a half-cord of firewood for $60. Bought it and have been burning things nightly for the past couple weeks. #waledchat
A5: Sewing, laying in my new hammock, laying with my kittens, walking the puppy, sitting on the front porch looking at the flowers, smelling the honeysuckle. Thats what I love to do during the summer. #waledchat
A5: It's no secret that I'm a master of @PokemonGoApp. Otherwise... just being outside. Fresh air. Kebabs. I sleep 3 hours max every night in the summer. Love it. #waledchat
A5: going on adventures with my husband @swkreed. We go to places that we/he/I have never been before. Last week it was the @OaklandZoo they had just opened a new area called California trail with wolves, bears and bison. It was amazing #WaledChat
A4: Dear students next year, enjoy the rest of your summer! Have lots of fun! Be ready to learn, laugh and have lots of fun next year! I can't wait to see you in August! #waledchat
A5: During the summer, I love meeting friends for lunch even though I'm still the first one finished. It's nice to have conversations with other adults in various restaurants. #waledchat
A3 I am teaching summer school, so I haven’t paused yet. I took a look at our family calendar and blocked out 4 days in August that are family only. We are going to Thomasland one day and the others I am planning smaller inexpensive day trips (zoos & the beach) #waledchat
A5: Going our for ice cream with my husband and daughter. She is 14 and it’s a great time to relax and chat. We also take time to enjoy the sunset together each night. It’s the little things that mean so much! #waledchat
A5: I love going to concerts! Nothing is better than music, sunshine, and good company. Also, I’m a HUGE Beyoncé fan so I’m super pumped to see her in August (don’t tell my students how cool I am). #BeyHive#waledchat
A5- taking kids and dogs to catch a summer sunset at Seabrook Beach at least weekly and one morning in the summer...I love to wake the kids for a summer sunrise and breakfast on the beach...brings me peace and happy memories every time #waledchat
