#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Hi everyone! Welcome to #LearnLAP my name is Morgan... I’m a 7th grade teacher from New Jersey & current softball coach. Please introduce yourself & we will start questions in a few :)
Hello all! Phil from Northern Virginia signing in. I teach 7th grade US History II and am the founder of #waledchat. Always love starting my Monday night off here! #learnlap
My name is Susan, and I am a student teacher from IL. This is my last week of student teaching, and I am still looking for a teaching position for next year. #learnlap
Q1) Metacognition is defined as having an "awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes." How do you emphasize & Teach metacognition in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A1) I try to get my students to think about where they are at currently and where they would like to be. I want them to reflect and grow as students. #learnlap
A1) Quiet writing and reflection time built into the class. I find it is really important in my subject to get them to understand their own reasons for their beliefs. #LearnLAP
A1 My students developed personal goals and strategies to achieve those goals. They are pretty self aware of where their learning needs to go #LearnLAP
A1: I think a major component of teaching metacognition is also teaching empathy. By helping Ss learn how other people think, it in turn helps them think about how they think. Love when my students recognize it! #learnlap@MrsAsztalos@Shapiro_WTHS@ERobbPrincipal
A1. Students know how they learn best. They learn best when we can make it REAL for them. Allow the students to learn by exploring and have them make a mind map/ brain dump sheet to show how their thinking has changed. #learnlap
Q1) Metacognition is defined as having an "awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes." How do you emphasize & Teach metacognition in your classroom? #LearnLAP
Q1: We do a great deal of reflection. We also give each other meaningful feedback (which has to be modeled and taught). It is never just about an answer but the process too. And beyond! Also, I say WE because I do everything I expect of my kiddos. #LearnLAP
A1 This year I introduced a learning journal for Ss to reflect and set goals. I have already found some things I need to fix, but I will be doing it next year with improvements. #LearnLAP
A1: I started using @Flipgrid with Ss to practice fluency. A Ss finished his reading, listened and asked if he could try again because he heard where he made a mistake. He was thinking about his work. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A1: this year I began bi-weekly reflections called "Mathacognition." Ss respond to a prompt on a private Google-doc where we talk about emotional connections to math, process success/failures, etc. Well received and HUGE benefits. Especially in "relationships."
Hey everyone! My name is Jimmy Warden and I am a current 4th and 5th grade math and science teacher, as well as a 2nd and 3rd grade science teacher! I also coach basketball and this is my first year as a teacher AND coach! #LearnLAP
A1: Modeling/Think alouds. I also in any debriefing, talk about our process and thought processes. Not only “what are you thinking?” but “how are you thinking?” #LearnLAP
A1: I get my students to reflect on why they're asking for help. Often they realize they're asking because they were daydreaming OR they figure out the answer on their own as they speak out loud. #learnlap
Q1) Metacognition is defined as having an "awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes." How do you emphasize & Teach metacognition in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A1 Great educators use metacognition frequently, though we call it "professional reflection." Teaching our Ss to reflect leads to an understanding of how to think about thinking. #learnlap
A1: before expecting my Ss to do something, I model for them what it sounds like/looks like. Ss need practice explaining what they’re thinking- it’s our responsibility to provide them with those opportunities. #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A1: Students need to understand how they learn and how they think. Teachers need to capitalize on their their students' strengths. Create a culture of empathy, encourage risk taking and embrace a growth mindset. #learnlap
Q2) Goal-Setting is one way to help students become more aware of their purpose in school. What strategies do you use to teach Goal-Setting for students? Please share any resources or links! #LearnLAP
A1. Metacognition is thinking about one's thinking. Getting Ss to reflect about their thinking patterns and how they process information to come to a specific answer and share their ideas with other Ss. #learnlap
A1: Asking those “Why?” & “How?” questions to get Ss thinking about their thinking🤔 💭 and why & how they came up with their answers/decisions. Modeling, modeling, and more modeling too! #LearnLAP
Any math authors that would not mind emailing 2 teachers at my school who work so hard? I am trying to thank them for supporting me throughout my student teaching, and I know a personal email would mean a lot. @joboaler#learnlap
A1: Reflections and feedback to one another and independently. Conferencing with Ss and getting them to talk about what they’re doing and how hey could make it better or where their struggles are. Sharing as we go and grow. #LearnLAP
A2 This year my kids wrote goal e-mails that were sent to their parents. It was a great way to bring their parents into the conversation and make the goals feel more real for the students. #LearnLAP
A2: Daily Task Sheet! Just a Google Doc with a spot for bell ringer, learning target and daily reflection.
At the beginning of the week, we look at the learning target/standard and we make goals for the class and for individuals. Fridays- We reflect! #learnlap
Q2) Goal-Setting is one way to help students become more aware of their purpose in school. What strategies do you use to teach Goal-Setting for students? Please share any resources or links! #LearnLAP
A2: In middle school, I model my thinking and metacognition. I tell I am going to show them how my brain thinking about my thinking and have them give me feedback in the form of noticings and wonderings. #LearnLAP
Q1) Metacognition is defined as having an "awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes." How do you emphasize & Teach metacognition in your classroom? #LearnLAP
Q2: We started a Growth Mindset slideshow this year. Ss set goals, reflect on those goals, analyze quotes and connect to them, give advice, share experiences, etc. It is a bit like a journal. We complete this as a bell ringer. #LearnLAP
A2: I feel like this is an area that I would like to grow in. Students have created goals last semester that we put on the bottom half of our door, and when they met a goal, they put it above the handle. I liked this visual and plan on doing this next year. #learnlap
A1 teach Ss to explain their process not just their product... encourage Ss to question each other about their processes to encourage dialogue about thinking #LearnLAP
A2 - This year, we started doing "S.M.A.A.R.T.E.R. Goals" that I just tweaked a little from the original SMART Goals format. My students prefer these.
Feel free to make a copy & use: https://t.co/bfVQnOvd8m#LearnLAP
Q2) Goal-Setting is one way to help students become more aware of their purpose in school. What strategies do you use to teach Goal-Setting for students? Please share any resources or links! #LearnLAP
A2 use a collaborative learning space such as Google docs to keep track of student thinking. Reflect on ideas with comment feature. Use comments to give feedback. Set goals based on feedback. #learnlap
A2) I have a list of choices for each day and students need to pick 3... they are organized by level of understanding in the hopes that they can self assess and figure out where they would like to get by the end #LearnLAP
Q2) Goal-Setting is one way to help students become more aware of their purpose in school. What strategies do you use to teach Goal-Setting for students? Please share any resources or links! #LearnLAP
A2: We use this same exact poster. Each S has a copy of it and a goal setting sheet that they carry around. I definitely need to be better at revisiting it and emphasizing the importance of setting and reaching goals more often though. #LearnLAP
Q2) Goal-Setting is one way to help students become more aware of their purpose in school. What strategies do you use to teach Goal-Setting for students? Please share any resources or links! #LearnLAP
A2: When I taught I showed students how to write a SMART Goal. We would set long term and short term goals, post them in the room and use personal goal tracking sheets. How many goals could they accomplish in a year? Students were surprised with the results. #learnlap
A2: I have not been used too much goal setting in my classroom this year. I would love to incorporate next year. I love the SMART strategy and reflection sheets after tests, and even reflecting on their own learning. Sometimes students are more honest then we think. #learnlap
A2: I feel like this is an area that I would like to grow in. Students have created goals last semester that we put on the bottom half of our door, and when they met a goal, they put it above the handle. I liked this visual and plan on doing this next year. #learnlap
A2. Sitting down with Ss when working with projects and activities and having them write out their goals and plans as to how and when they expect to have their projected work finished. They can adjust goals as needed. #learnlap
A2: We have a #GoalGetters wall that is a real soccer goal. The kids write their goals on soccer balls and place them on the wall and change out when they’ve met their goal. More to come...
#LearnLAP
A2: We started playing around with "Via Survey" this year. Ss can learn about their character strengths and work to build academic, social, emotional goals around them! It's a free, convenient tool to kick start conversation. https://t.co/pOHWWgJ7S3#learnlap
A2 My S's choose their goals and strategies, we have a conference about them. If their strategies to achieve them don't match or won't be effective we rework them together. #LearnLAP
A2:
I was readings the beginning of the year—and I can’t remember where—about the benefit of setting goals that aren’t necessary SMART goals, but are loftier. I guess more like dreams. I must find it. It was a great read! #LearnLAP
A2: We have weekly class meetings where we set goals with built in times to reflect on them, we do daily/weekly class goals & Ss are just beginning to develop individual SMART goals as well #LearnLAP
We do goals often. After checkpoint quizzes so the students can better prepare for the upcoming assessments. During Problem-Based assignments when they have a large task.. Anything can be set for the goal : ) #learnlap
A1: Ss need to understand how they learn and how they think. Teachers need to help their ss understand both their strengths and weaknesses. This all starts with building relationships and morning meeting. Time for reflection is a daily must.
#LearnLAP
2b We revisit their goals in January if they've been achieved they generate new goals if they have not been achieved we look at the strategies #LearnLAP
A2: I only had students write down their “hopes and dreams” for the school year (one academic goal and one social/emotional), but I wish I did more than that! Perhaps I’ll check in with the kids on those to see if they can still happen! #LearnLAP
A2) My @piratelearners create SMART goals bi weekly! It’s an incredible way for students to monitor their progress, in both academic and personal areas! #LearnLAP
Q2) Goal-Setting is one way to help students become more aware of their purpose in school. What strategies do you use to teach Goal-Setting for students? Please share any resources or links! #LearnLAP
A2: We started playing around with "Via Survey" this year. Ss can learn about their character strengths and work to build academic, social, emotional goals around them! It's a free, convenient tool to kick start conversation! https://t.co/YRL58NTxNi#learnlap
Set class goals on the Google Calendar and post it to your Class Website (Maybe Google Site?) This will open up more parent/student/teacher collaboration! Parents love those open windows into the Ss learning. #learnlap
#learnlap A2: Last "Mathacognition" reflection of the year: "Picture yourself going home after the last day. What are you going to be most proud of for having accomplished or attempted in this class?" Ss held themselves to the fire!
A3: As a pre-service teacher active on Twitter, my goals have expanded. I have opportunities that I never dreamed of before, and our Ss need to monitor their goals as well to see that they are progressing. #learnlap
A3) It gently reminds students how their semester or week, or even day is progressing. Many opportunities for self reflection & proactive improvements immediately #LearnLAP
Q3: I encourage my Ss to set both school goals and personal goals. We try to be much specific and meaningful. Many Ss like adding goals about friendships, family things, or other achievements. I think this is more well-rounded anyway, and is a better fit for life goals. #LearnLAP
A2: Kids write their goal grade on all tests. After test, we reflect, correct & discuss if met their goal &, if not, how they can next time. They have a goal folder where they graph grade & keep their tests. They take a card home to their parents w/grade & parents sign. #LearnLAP
A3: I had a college professor @almilleISU who told me that I was growing in terms of my math skills and making progress. It meant a lot that she focused on process over product. Because of her, I am inspired and have an earnest desire to help my Ss. #learnlap
A3: The purpose is definitely for them to see their growth and develop some intrinsic motivation as a result of seeing their progress! Considering this is my first year, I’m still looking for some great resources and ideas to track that 😝 #LearnLAP
A3:
We do goal setting in our Soaring to Success time. In my class I revisit the goals every couple of weeks. Where I fall down is my semester 2 classes. I tend to forget then. #LearnLAP
I used a cool google sheet from @mrsjacksonelar to track data, monitor their progress, and set goals. It helped the Ss to take ownership of their learning. #LearnLAP
A3: Still growing in this. I am thinking of having students set goals that involve our adaptive learning tool for the course, confidence in vocab and usage. I give them a vocab/concept by unit and chapter goals. Want to do a better job of having check points built in. #learnlap
#learnlap A3 Using SBG, Ss are aware of which skills they have and have not demonstrated mastery for. I see them set goals all the time to "catch up" and recover past skills. They come during the free "A+" period from 9:40-10:30 and seek both help and reassessment.
A3 They choose goals in Reading, writing, spelling, and/or math. They choose the areas they feel they need to improve. Their goals are posted in the class. I give shout outs to S's I observe working on their goals #LearnLAP
A3: parent communication, student assessment goals, group work goals, etc.
I like how someone else said they include “personal goals” for the students! Great idea. #learnlap
A3: Ss set goals for various purposes- to monitor progress towards personal goals they set for themselves, to monitor progress towards district and state mandated benchmarks. Ss set goals to have something to focus on and work towards. #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: @GoogleForEdu google classroom would be a great place to monitor and collaborate with Ss about goals. Would love to do this along with a portfolio. #goalsforme#goalforthem#LearnLAP
A3: My Ss set academic, improvement, class & personal goals. Ideally they reflect on them to see/celebrate improvement or growth, or modify their plan to help become successful #LearnLAP
A3. Ss after writing their goals, keep timelines to monitor their progress. If they need to make changes in the timeline which effects duedates, they need to notify teacher and explain why, and possibly set time to make up assignment, if necessary or late. #learnlap
A3: I would want them to set goals for their own learning and see what they can achieve. I would also want them to see that achieving goals often takes baby steps and they may not achieve it right off. Sometimes that in itself it the biggest struggle with setting goals! #learnlap
A3 - We do goal setting in several ways:
(1) I help students set goals at report card time based on academics & 21st C Skills.
(2) Ss set individual goals 1-2x/week based on their perceived struggles.
(3) We set whole class goals every day during REARJMCL.
#LearnLAP
Q4) How do you encourage students to reflect on their learning? Do you scaffold it? Do they do it on their own? Do they do any progress monitoring on their own? #LearnLAP
A3: Our guidance department started a "Steps to Success" program. Student set goals throughout the grading cycle to mark their progress. They review biweekly. Use graphs to monitor. Really helps struggling students be successful. #learnlap
A3 I tell Ss goals are important because they give you a purpose and a destination. I also talk about how a goal without an actionable plan is just a wish and I am not their fairy godmother. #LearnLAP
A4: Begin the year with a lot of modeling and graphic organizers. After they get the hang of it, let them reflect however they feel comfortable. We love #screencastify and #flipgrid for video.
some prefer to blog/journal. #learnlap
Q4) How do you encourage students to reflect on their learning? Do you scaffold it? Do they do it on their own? Do they do any progress monitoring on their own? #LearnLAP
A4 We take time in class to do progress monitoring using Google sheets courtesy of @mrsjacksonelar. The Ss leave comments with their goals, and I respond. It's an ongoing conversation all year long. #LearnLAP
A3: The purpose is for Ss to see their growth. 🤞 ANY growth is progress! Whether it be from a 20 to a 40 or from a 70 to a 90. Growth is good & motivates kids! They need to believe they got this! If they didn’t grow, that should motivate them to keep trying! #LearnLAP
A4: My hope is that through conversations and feedback students will spend time honestly reflecting on how they grow. I also share some of my reflections with them to passively model. #learnlap
A4: I build reflection into our activities each day. It is a component that I value too. They know I listen and/or read their comments. This reflective piece includes what I can do to help them, what could be changed, etc. I feel it gives a TEAM feel to all we do. #LearnLAP
A4: Ts must meet with Ss & follow up on previous goals. Ask Ss to reflect on their effort, progress, & results. Do adjustments need to be made? If yes-why? If no-why? It’s about the conversation to work together in order to move forward. #learnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
Yet another awesome thing @ItsAMrY is doing for students!
I like to start conversations with students also about the brain science of math anxiety. Neural connections, dendrites and axons, oh my! I find it really helps them #learnlap
#learnlap A4: I'm a broken record here on "Mathacognition." But it's been just that handy. Ss consistently reflect on what's working & how to recreate "+" scenarios. Also on what roles they play in class, what other roles might work, and how their emotions towards math change.
Q4) How do you encourage students to reflect on their learning? Do you scaffold it? Do they do it on their own? Do they do any progress monitoring on their own? #LearnLAP
A4 I try to give time to have them reflect individually at least once a week. I also send them home to get signed after tests to share with parents. I just wish more parents actually read them instead of just signing them. #learnlap
A4: I have students do it on their own after end of unit projects. Mostly along the lines of if they used their time efficiently, if they would change anything, and if they felt like the timeframe and directions were appropriate #LearnLAP
A4: This is an absolutely critical step in the growth mindset process. Modeling reflection from the very first day can create a culture of success. @flipgrid is a great tool for students to do personal reflections or use a google doc to track progress (ex. writing) #learnlap
A4:
We constantly reflect on our processes. Drama is more skills based than knowledge based, so Ss video themselves frequently and look at their own growth and set performance goals. #LearnLAP
Q5) Explain what this quote means to you: "...STUDENTS MUST UTILIZE THEIR RESOURCES, PERSIST DESPITE SETBACKS, AND TRY NEW WAYS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS... (202)." How might teachers empower their students to do these things? #LearnLAP
A4. Reflection is an important part of learning, we need to give Ss time to comprehend information and think about what they have learned. Towards the end of class, we can have a discussion and question session. They can voice comments, too. #learnlap
A4 - I do scaffold formal Reflection (and it's explained in detail in #LearnLAP). Our goal is always TRANSFER, though, so the scaffolds eventually get removed and the students are asked & expected to reflect independently going forward. Takes my 5th graders most of the year! :)
A5 I love encouraging and celebrating resilience in the classroom! I try to provide an environment of productive struggle and celebrate big time when Ss have breakthroughs, big and small! #LearnLAP
A4: I hate to say I have been pretty passive in having them monitor. I have provided tools, but my consciousness of the importance of making this a part of the class only recently elevated. #LearnLAP
Just asking them to express the source of the anxiety was so helpful to me to know how best to help the "person" in front of me. (As opposed to the "math student.") #learnlap
A5 Using resources to me is classroom resources - word walls, dictionaries, charts, and peers. Persevering with tasks some thing many of my S's don't do, sometimes they will find a unique way to solve a problem #LearnLAP
A5: That’s some ?!! I strive to be this!Try not to belabor the googleable info, provide opportunity to make new meaning of content, encourage them that a struggle is another swipe to the might oak which may come tumbling down at at moment, fearlessly persist with them!
#LearnLAP
A5: That quote means EVERYTHING! In an education utopia, that would be the norm! I think celebrating mistakes can empower students to decrease discouragement and hopefully increase ambition to learn from them! #LearnLAP
A5:
Create safe spaces; be there to support and/or coach, but not over function for them; never settle or allow them to settle for mediocre. It takes finesse to push, but not too far or too hard. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A5: Offer reassessment. Show students that learning is what matters as opposed to knowing things by a certain date. If Ss see that you care about learning as opposed to test-taking/passing, they will keep trying....come for help....and meet the standard you set.
#LearnLAP
A5. Our Ss have failures from first attempts in learning and so on, they must continue to persist trying in learning and not forget that there are multiple ways to solve one problem! Enc. Ss to use their creativity, and try multiple pathways in learning! #learnlap
#LearnLAP A5- we talk about resiliency and perseverance daily! I empower them everyday to give it their all and teach them that failing and trying again makes you stronger
A5: By creating the safe culture of inquiry, collaboration & FAILing regularly, as part of the journey, Ts empower Ss. Believing Ss are capable & able is truly the first step! #LearnLAP
A5: This quote is the epitome of teaching! I strive for this! Try not to belabor the googleable, provide opportunity to make new meaning of content, encourage them that each struggle is a step toward the finish line and no one succeeds w/o failing!
#LearnLAP
A5: This is so hard for kiddos today! As teachers, we need to share resources and walk them through decision-making/problem-solving processes and reflection. We don't do it for them but WITH them...as a guide and an ear for listening, even a shoulder from time to time. #LearnLAP
A4: I have had students reflect after major projects using a thinking log. Ss reflect with what they were successful in, I figured out, I was confused with, I was surprised in. So much insight. #learnlap
A5. This is the mantra in our classroom. The Ask 3 b4 U C Me really helps Ss look for other alternatives. We celebrate when we make mistakes and pushing though them. #LearnLAP
Ditto, Cory @EffectualEdu It is being elevated even more in tonight's #LearnLAP chat, learning lots, that could have made a bigger difference in some crucial areas of my classroom this year. . .
A4: I hate to say I have been pretty passive in having them monitor. I have provided tools, but my consciousness of the importance of making this a part of the class only recently elevated. #LearnLAP
A6: I model introspection by admitting when I make mistakes as a teacher, accepting feedback from students, and making changes to my instruction based on their feedback. I am curious about opinions as to whether it can be taught 🤔 #LearnLAP
#learnlap A6: End of the year, I ask kids to answer: 1) What do you think I saw in you that other people miss? 2) What do you think I missed in you that other people see? 3) What advice would you give me so that I can better serve future Ss like you?
Their feedback matters.
A6. It's getting Ss to take the time to do self-analysis. Thinking about how they derived or came up with an answer or conclusion. Looking at their patterns of thinking, directions and pathways which lead them to conclusions! #learnlap
A6: We have to be willing to be vulnerable too when it comes to reflection and introspection. This is how we really model it, show its benefits and importance to growth. #LearnLAP
A5: Ss need the necessary tools to know what strategies to use and when, what to do when something doesn’t work out, how to overcome difficulties and the importance of maintaining a #GrowthMindset in order to succeed despite any obstacles. #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
Q2: We started a Growth Mindset slideshow this year. Ss set goals, reflect on those goals, analyze quotes and connect to them, give advice, share experiences, etc. It is a bit like a journal. We complete this as a bell ringer. #LearnLAP
A5: This is the GRIT philosophy. Ss learn that failure isn't permanent and that it is an opportunity to redirect their efforts in a meaningful way. Ts can break up GRIT and Growth mindsets as parts of class. #LearnLAP
A6: Introspection involves vulnerability & the willingness to name one's own experiences. Like a muscle, it can be stretched and strengthened! Learning to name feelings & talk about emotions is a place to start! #learnlap
A6: “Ss I am going to model how I think about this issue, text, concept. Be very quiet Bc my mind wanders easily! Jot down what you notice my brain doing during the next 3 minutes.” #LearnLAP
A6: I model how to reflect on when things went well and how I feel about it as well as when things didn’t go as expected. Ss need to see their Ts model for them what they expect in return. #learnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
Unfortunately too many (including me as a new teacher) see Ts and Ss as merely the givers and takers of tests. With good models, hopefully Ts can break out of that viewpoint or never adopt it in the first place. #learnlap
A6: I blog/podcast reflection on https://t.co/DacioI4EWA, I participate in twitter chats (and host one too) all of these help me look inwardly and contemplate my craft. #learnlap
Q7: School is a very social environment for teachers and Ss. Reflecting on leadership and social skills, friendships and relationships, are impo. We can all reflect in these areas, as well as in our additional duties, clubs, etc. #LearnLAP
A7:
We reflect differently during our after school play rehearsals. I reflect as department chair. I reflect on myself teaching my discipline literacy vs. acting/creating skills. I reflect how I do cafeteria duty in the mornings when I have it. #LearnLAP
A6: I think I model this by asking them for feedback, trying their suggestions, and reflecting together. Sometimes I share what my musings have been& where I think I need to work on...it’s powerful to be vulnerable & imperfect 😉#LearnLAP
A6: I think just asking Ss why they chose to do something, whether that be academically or behaviorally. I am constantly reflecting on lessons and wondering how I can make things better. I am honest about the Ss with this too, which I think is beneficial to them.
#LearnLAP
A6 My GRIT website was to help our 3rd and 4th grade with a writing prompt - it become much more - a resource and guide on how students can get GRIT!
https://t.co/jR8Cex2ivk#LearnLAP
A6: Always admit mistakes
— not just in my learning and teaching, but being human. Kids respect you more and want to learn from you when you do. #LearnLAPhttps://t.co/k6DM7r9lb6
A7 Reflection should be a part of everything - singing in the choir, sports, chess club etc., but unfortunately we tend not to make time for it. My OneWord2018 was Reflection, still working on it 😀 #LearnLAP
A5: I think we have to model failure, setback, how to handle it, and how to get back on it. I recently did a Tough Mudder. I showed the kids my goal, talked about what I was doing to achieve, showed them tons of pictures on when I completed and then reflected. #learnlap
A6: I show them my Ideal Day schedule and how I build in white space and mindfulness time throughout the day. I also model the quiet time in the class to show them how important it is. #LearnLAP
A6 I believe this is best modeled daily. I encourage students to find my mistakes. We celebrate when we find mistakes in answer keys. We dig deep to find the right answers. We do a Frustration Friday math problem where we really need to persevere to figure out answer. #LearnLAP
Excellent questions! I give my Ss a report card for me that’s done anonymously. They’ve been amazing tools for me to pinpoint areas I need to strengthen. #LearnLAP
Q8) In LLAP, students are expected to answer reflection questions in two parts: 1- By answering the question directly and 2- By explaining WHY they did it that way (requiring introspection). How might you use this process in your classroom? What benefits might you see? #LearnLAP
A7: as a Reading Specialist, self-reflection is a component in everything I do and every conversation I have with Ss and Ts alike. It may be in a lesson, observation, conference, collaboration, planning meeting- we reflect along the way! #learnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A7 After a long weekend - reflecting on the past week's unsuccessful reading test - I found that over 90% of my students did show growth, it just doesn't reflect it in the overall green, yellow, red categories... We did reach our goal #LearnLAP
A7: in MS, this is especially important with behavior and it is important to get to the bottom of things. Most of the time, it’s an underlying cause/something that could be avoided. I think we need to take different approaches to “detentions” at this level. #LearnLAP
Thanks SO much to everyone who participated in #LearnLAP tonight! Especially @MsTayGrade7LA for moderating a topic that is near & dear to me!
Please come back next week as @_AmandaFry & @_SeanFry moderate "Fostering student voice while engaging in 21st century skills."
#learnlap hope to see you on Thursday at 9pm ET as we reflect on our wins and losses over the past in #waledchat! Hope to see you there! Here are the Q's https://t.co/ZnAGAg67ss
A8 I think the biggest benefit would be building in student Reflection and over time and experience those Reflections would become more thoughtful #LearnLAP
A7: I use this A LOT in situations with social decision making in and out of the classroom go get Ss to think about what “triggered” their decision and how recognizing that “trigger” can allow them to make better decisions #LearnLAP
A8 Since reading LLAP last year,my questioning continues to ask why or how? My Ss know that an answer is not an answer without proof. This really helps Ss understand the material. If they can’t tell why or how we go back and figure it out. Exit tickets work well! #LearnLAP
Q8) In LLAP, students are expected to answer reflection questions in two parts: 1- By answering the question directly and 2- By explaining WHY they did it that way (requiring introspection). How might you use this process in your classroom? What benefits might you see? #LearnLAP
