Once the chat starts moving quickly, tweeters will need to see that A2 is your answer to Q2 so they can follow along and respond appropriately. Thank you! #ELLCHAT
A2: the main challenge my 1st graders face is when they have to read word peoblems. It’s much worse when they have to write their own. Also when they have to create their own question about a graph. #ELLCHAT
A2: I used to teach a math support class with ENLs and they had issues with vocab. I've also seen issues when they were switching to common core especially if they came from a different country. #ellchat
A2: I think the biggest challenge our ELLs face during math is the vast amount of information they need to retain and st such a fast pace.
I believe for some terms, repetition is needed
#ELLchat
A2) I imagine that ELLs struggle with not only understanding the concepts of math, but also trying to understand what math concepts are being taught in English. #ELLCHAT
A2: Math content vocabulary. Multiple meaning words and deciphering which meaning applies to math. If you are not a good reader, you will struggle in math also. #ELLCHAT
#ELLCHAT A2 Our Ss are not even allowed to register for math unless they complete their #ESOL sequence. On one hand, it makes sure that they are prepared when they get there. On the other, many Ss might not speak English, but may have taken college math in their home country.

Q2) ELLs face some of the same challenges that native speakers face. We don't always offer Ss enough opportunities to talk and write about math. If we don't do that, they don't internalize language or concepts as well as they could. (True for ALL Ss.) #ELLchat
#ELLChat A2 Vocab is a huge hang up for ELLs for start next school year our ELL math course will be offering a pre-geometry course to support ELLs getting ready for geometry.
A2 Challenge for early childhood teachers is they are not specialists in math, may feel less confident in teaching math and adding challenge of different languages is something college didn’t prepare them to do! #ELLCHAT
#ELLCHAT A2 So true. When people think of ESOL as remediation, they forget that many of our Ss come with excellent skills and preparation in many academic areas.
A2: In middle school, a wide variety of educational backgrounds (esp. SLIFE) makes differentiation challenging. Staying on grade level while getting some “caught up” is difficult #ELLCHAT
A2) My HS ELLs are all over the board. Some KNOW the math but can't answer the Qs because of the wording. Some do not have the same educational background and not only don't understand the math, but also the explanations. They are pushed forward without grasping the NOW. #ellchat
A2) Mental math may be the norm. ELLs may not show work in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division or they may show work in a different way, #ELLCHAT
#ELLCHAT A2 As an #ELL many years ago, I had real trouble because in Russia we formatted things differently, so long division looked upside down to me here. Plus in Russia, commas are used in front of decimals, and dots to separate thousands from hundreds. Reverse of English...
A2 Well - I would say another challenge is it’s hard for families of ELLs/DLLs to understand the math assignments enough to help child, but that’s true of ALL families ;) #ELLCHAT

Wow! I have had so many sitdowns explaining to Ts that if the kids get the answer, and understand your way, it doesn't matter if they do it that way. Most of my kids can do it w/o a calculator. American kids can't.... #ellchat
A2) One challenge ELs face in Math is the variety of terms used to express the same concept. Also, the fact that many teachers mistakenly believe that Math will be easier since it is "universal". #ELLCHAT
A2: Surely someone mentioned lots of word problems in math. ELL may know how to do calculation but struggle to understand larger context of word problem #ELLChat
A2 Well - I would say another challenge is it’s hard for families of ELLs/DLLs to understand the math assignments enough to help child, but that’s true of ALL families ;) #ELLCHAT
I've seen similar issues with my students from Italy and the Caribbean. I try to differentiate and anticipate the problems. I also look online for math problems from their country. You'd be surprised how much you can find on google. #ellchat

English learners are placed in remedial math courses much more often than their English-proficient peers, which can be feel discouraging for students #ELLCHAT
a3 - Honestly, Lynn. Wouldn’t that make a great new book? If someone would create a resource outlining how immigrant students may have begun learning key subjects in their home country, that would be a big seller! #ELLCHAT
A2) My ELLs always had problems with large numbers. Use of decimal point and comma vary from culture to culture, In many cultures 1,230 and U.S, 1,230. #ellchat
A2 Listen, I know you are right about this, but it’s kind of a shame because some way to involve the families would help those family members as well as student - I guess it would start with family math fun workshops? #ELLCHAT

A2) I second that, Judie! All our Math T's have a heavy load and deserve our support to help with the range of language abilities in their classes. #ellchat
English learners are placed in remedial math courses much more often than their English-proficient peers, which can be feel discouraging for students #ELLCHAT
A3) I would do my best to adhere to what works best for the ELLs when they are learning a new concept, and attempt to convey the content in an easy to understand way; albeit that seems easier said than done. #ELLCHAT
Agreed! As long as cultural values and family time is honored!
In many occasions, homework devalues parent because they can’t help.
Perhaps yes, a workshop to demonstrate parents how students learn at school just so they know and to empower them! #ELLChat
A3: Provide students with MANY structured opportunities to hear and use the language of math. Explicitly teach math vocabulary and its usage. Don't assume Ss have the background knowledge! #ellchat
A3) Ts need to offer help in Native Lang even in Eng Only states with experts in Math (nit just translators) so Ss can ask the deep questions! #ellchat
#ELLCHAT A3 One beautiful thing about math is that while the language is not universal, many of the symbols are at least similar. Geometry, for example, at its most basic, requires almost no language.
A3: Select key terms, provide visual support & context including opportunities to practice. See sample math vocab QR project https://t.co/V7oaliTCEB#ELLCHAT
A3) I've used the Frayer Model in the past. I've also used an interactive notebook (INB). I like the INB because everything is kept in one place. The vocabulary is usually laid out in flip books and models. #ellchat
A2 It was so frustrating to see standard measurements on a state assessment. My ELs were not familiar with miles and I could not provide any help with this during the test.
A3: I model how I want them to discuss a concept. I build in student interaction routines in my Lessons. I give them sentence frames that support the language function of the standard. Simon says, Math says charts #ELLchat

Q3) A social contract so the math class is supportive of everyone learning language & content. Also, a choral read of objectives so Ss focus on goals and feel comfortable talking abt them. or writing abt them. This #ELLs in Math video explains: https://t.co/uMwWLdOxZa#ELLchat

A3: here is a great resource to support #ELLs during math AND to support the LANGUAGE of math BECAUSE math is not just about numbers! #ellchat@achievethecore
a3) Frayer Models incorporate many of Marzano's Six Steps to building Academic Vocabulary. You're hitting multiple modalities. High Five, Rebecca! #ellchat
A3) I've used the Frayer Model in the past. I've also used an interactive notebook (INB). I like the INB because everything is kept in one place. The vocabulary is usually laid out in flip books and models. #ellchat
A3) We started providing sentence frames rich in academic language in our warm-up problems & encouraged students to use the vocab orally as they explained their answers. Ex: Instead of “It’s 15”, they must write & say “The perimeter is 15 inches.” #ELLCHAT
#ELLCHAT A3 It is also sometimes good to have students work on a problem in groups, each bringing a different piece of the necessary skills and knowledge...
A3 For young children is critical that math skills be taught only with MEANINGFUL content - not skills in isolation or silly content. Without content, the skill has no meaning and is quickly forgotten by any young child - but especially lost on ELLs/DLLs #ELLCHAT@NCTM
A3: I modify the language. I also have a math vocabulary list on one side of my dry erase board. We go over new vocabulary and meaning every day. I also help them with sentence starters when it comes to writing word problems or questions. #ELLCHAT
A3 So materials used for math need to have meaning that an ELL/DLL can understand even if not yet understanding the words tchr uses to explain. Teach sorting with socks? Meaningful! Sort paper shapes? meaningless! #ELLCHAT
YES! What a great idea! I did a #fulbrightteach in Palestine and my research project was NOWHERE NEAR that topic but I got a ton out of watching random chemistry classes to see how they do it! #ellchat
A3) @GetKahoot now offers verified, Common Core & TEKS aligned Kahoots for Math. They hv visuals and hv been created by educators.
SUPERFANTASTIC!
https://t.co/OFv2eVezAP#ELLchat
I happen to teach next door to the math T of my 8th graders. We’ve both improved how we approach supporting ELs this year to in turn support each other. #ellchat
Yes! I just was in a school in Dearborn, MI that had lots of student-made graphs on the wall showing data collected by students -- percentages of the class with certain traits, height, etc. https://t.co/TDu2V5UPvt#ellchat
A2 not to mention that now my students have to explain their math reasoning which is very difficult for newcomers or ELs who are at an early proficiency level. #ELLCHAT
A3 It’s so important to be careful with the graphic organizers used with young DLLs/ELLs - just because they mean something to you doesn’t mean a young child from another culture will get the connection. Tchrs have to learn to see things from child’s perspective #ELLCHAT
A4) I think the biggest support to share is the understanding that ELLs might be falling behind because of the language barrier and not because they are bad at math. #ELLCHAT
A4 in #earlyed, this question is about what instructional supports for math learning for ELLs/DLLs would you share with gen ed teacher. This article will help: https://t.co/cnkV9Q5dFZ It’s about what makes meaningful content #ELLCHAT@NCTM
A4: Make content meaningful and lessons engaging. Use manipulative and visuals. Give students opportunities to navigate their learning through interaction and conversation. #ELLCHAT
A3) Consider TEACHING math vocab w these #kahoot games vs. reviewing only. They have visuals & you can use them as an interactive ppt by pulling the visual back up before moving to the next question. So you're playing as a way of introducing/teaching vocab & concepts. #ellchat
A3) @GetKahoot now offers verified, Common Core & TEKS aligned Kahoots for Math. They hv visuals and hv been created by educators.

A4) And I can never miss an opportunity to share our most popular article -- Language Objectives: The Key to Effective Content Instruction for #ELL SS | https://t.co/PYacZ5qzKU#ellchat
#ELLCHAT A3 Something as basic as letting students count in whatever language is most comfortable. I am an English teacher, but hand me a stack of something to count, and you will hear Russian after the first five items...
A4 I’ve had math and gen ed tchrs ask me what to do about “those ELLs” to “make” them listen. I help the tchrs understand - nobody can “listen” if the speaker makes no attempt to help them understand - teaching has to change to be effective and comprehensible! #ELLCHAT
A4: Edit! Simplify the language in problems. "He had $20 and spent $12. How much is left?" is just as good a word problem for ELs as one that starts "The fraternity brother found a tag sale last weekend @ the home of a former ski instructor when he spied the $12 skis..."

#ELLCHAT A5 I have not taught math to #ELLs, but I have helped former students. One thing that has helped is to share my own struggles with the language of math. It's a challenge for us both, and we can overcome it together....
A3 Yes, Maria - and this good advice applies to teachers of ALL ages! even infant/toddler teachers need to think about the songs and books they use to illustrate simple counting and shapes - to be more relatable. #ELLCHAT#NAEYC#MTchat
A4) I love this article. It is so supportive for content Ts.
A language objective is what allows us to focus on the math while we build language. We know if we meet language goals, we are doing the right thing for ELs. All classrooms wud benefit from language goals. #ellchat
A4) And I can never miss an opportunity to share our most popular article -- Language Objectives: The Key to Effective Content Instruction for #ELL SS | https://t.co/PYacZ5qzKU#ellchat
A4 I agree - this goes back to the old problem where tchrs don’t feel like they’re teaching unless they are doing all the talking. Remember “the ones who are talking are the ones who are learning” #ELLCHAT so provide activities and materials that support student talk/discovery
A4: Edit! Simplify the language in problems. "He had $20 and spent $12. How much is left?" is just as good a word problem for ELs as one that starts "The fraternity brother found a tag sale last weekend @ the home of a former ski instructor when he spied the $12 skis..."
#ellchat
A5 - good idea - because some of the vocab comes from textbook - but some comes from the particular way each teacher has of explaining and supporting, don’t you think? #ELLCHAT
A5) Allow them to work it all out w L1 support.
BUT! Make sure they meet the language objective for the class as well.
Each of us wud want to do the heavy lifting in our native language. But we wud also need a daily language goal in the target language in each class. #ellchat
A5 For what it’s worth, I found these bilingual glossaries for several languages for different content areas, including math. I should update it to include Spanish. #ellchathttps://t.co/rL92jhd7jp
A4) Dedicating time to asking Ss how they solve Math problems is powerful. A S from India taught me- he used the creases on his fingers (palm side)to add numbers. In US we have 10 fingers, in India they have 30 creases! I want to add THAT way (and keep my socks on)!#ELLChat
I haven't taught math to ELLs, and most likely won't, but the vocab charts in this feed that explain different operations are amazing and seem incredibly helpful. #ELLCHAT
A5 For #preschool, create math activities that use same content/vocab as other activities in the day. Ex: Read a book about ducks, play duck counting game at water table, take walk to duck pond, etc. This way, duck-related vocab continues as foundation to add math words #ELLCHAT
#ELLChat I like heterogeneous grouping but find it difficult with ELs because the newest ones get shy, end up just copying or shutting down. (middle school context) Any suggestions?
A5: For word problems, we take one sentence at a time and write down what info that sentence is giving us. Then we look at the question and write an answer statement so we know what we are solving for. #ELLCHAT
a5) My son joined Mr. Maurer's class which was known 4 boosting achievement of newcomers & ELs.
His homework had few calculations but always had 2 write a paragraph "I solved that by..." Or "I noticed..."
Writing/explaining math is SO POWERFUL. (He loved the class btw) #ellchat

A6) I think Chegg would be a great way to help students understand concepts because they utilize multiple languages and I assume their tutors might be bilingual, which could definitely help. Hopefully Chegg would be used to supplement and not replace, though. #ELLCHAT
I have to run a few minutes early. Thank you again for an amazing #ELLCHAT@judiehaynes and @KarenNemethEdM and everyone else. I knew I would learn a lot, and I was definitely right!
A6) The school I worked at had a subscription to IXL Math and I found that really useful for differentiation. Anytime I felt that someone needed extra help on a topic it always had exercises for them. #ellchat
A6 I agree, but sometimes this approach can get off track. The singing and moving should be connected with useful meaning, not just repeating. Like -5 Monkeys Jumping on Bed song works better if you have monkey toys, or a way of using jumping to support counting. #ELLChat
A5) I love the empathy activity from @DStaehrFenner in her book on #ELL advocacy -- a math problem in German that can be shared w/ colleagues to help them understand what it feels like to learn content in another language! https://t.co/tV01Q0G603 (pp 42-44) #ELLchat@CorwinPress

Q6: Co-teaching! I've been asking to work together with a math teacher next year in Integrated Math 1.
🤞Fingers crossed it fits into our master schedule! #ellchat#coteaching
a6) @khanacademy on Youtube is phenomenal 4 basic math thru Calculus & now in other languages!
Even in English, you can slow rate of speech & use closed captioning. Thx to @mospillman for the tips! #ELLchat
A5) This #ESL teacher sends a note to colleagues at the beginning of each year explaining who he is and how they can collaborate. This could work for #ELL / math collaboration. | https://t.co/kLfUFDXBV9#ELLchat
A6: Our school uses Imagine Math and Prodigy for students to practice the skills. I always recommend Khan Academy to my parents as a good resource xeo students to use at home for review. #ELLCHAT
A6) @khanacademy has Spanish versions of some of their videos (or all?) And full transcripts for videos. They also are hosted by Youtube so they have CC translations for what they are worth. #ellchat Some kids hate the videos, others use them ALL THE TIME.
