I call attention to examining multiple perspectives of the same hist event. time is linear but the interchange of ideas & perspectives of that linear event are more intertwined & create a knot of existence that may not have definite beginning and end. #flipclass#flipclasschat
OK.
For narrative topics, like most literature and history, we really should proceed in a sequence. You can't (shouldn't) jump around between chapters of a book, or events on the timeline.
However, there are surely some elements/topics/concepts that can be nonlinear.

Yes! I envision a looping structure around the core text. Anyone ever seen macrame? Kind of like that. (Seriously there is a GIF for everything!) #flipclass
We are resurrecting it, one week and one GIF at a time! :)
Actually @lanier_katiesue and @matthew_t_moore (and perhaps others I left out) have been super about working on #flipclass organization the past few weeks.

math might be argued as exceedingly linear in nature but while Ss don't have infinite entry points, limiting Ss to ONLY one is also silly. Ts job is to present multiple entry points that lead to S success and provide guidance #flipclass#flipclasschat
Ok, I think I can #flipclasschat for a while. This week is informal — the formal #flipclass chat has moved to every-other-week during the summer, and that’s back on next week (Monday, 8pm Eastern time).
Once the structure is built (ie hypersoc) then it is easy to see where we can provide students various entry points to engagement (nonlinear)... almost like a jungle gym #flipclass

My brain can get very very nonlinear. Everything is connected to everything else so where to begin?! I have a fairly high % of students like that too.
A mostly-linear approach helps me to feel organized, and I think it helps Ss with similar needs too.
#flipclass / #flipclasschat
and that is a good thing. Ss do need structure. we train them with structure and no structure is as or more damaging than structure. I think the main point is exploring choice more than has been our habit #flipclass#flipclasschat

Right! You cant differentiate if you dont know what is the big structure or map (to use another metaphor). You have to see the whole before you can have different pathways within it. #flipclass

I like to think of it like a boat dock on a lake. Limited entry points (gives Ss focus & stability) but once launched the boat can travel anywhere it likes. Yet, it always knows where the pier is. #flipclass
My colleagues give a LOT of freedom & choice, and I get significant pushback and advice from students to continue with providing structure and consistency.... Kind of a weird issue to have, right?
#flipclass / #flipclasschat
There needs to be some framework (I hesitate to use the word boundaries), but think of differentiation as a big park w multiple pathways inside of it. Make sense? #flipclass

I found the opposite in my T travels. Many colleagues tightened the screws or taught very traditionally. Students mostly longed for some freedom and choice. #flipclass
YES! But the T is there because the T built the framework initially. We are in the background. We are the architects, the students are the builders. #flipclass

I really like your swimming lanes analogy. A lane could be for butterfly, another for backstroke, one for freestyle.... but there are still clear goals, expectations, and parameters for each choice

In need of more responses particularly from administrators of all kinds! You don’t need to be a music teacher to fill this out- anyone.... parent, teacher, student, admin are all welcome! Please SHARE! #tlap#edchat#musedchat#edtechchat#flipclass#kinderchat
Hi all! I am part of a summer graduate course focusing on research! We are inviting any and all to complete a very short survey looking at support for school music programs and would appreciate any input you are willing to give! Thank you!

This is why I LOVE gallery walks. Gives Ss ability to spend time at pics/docs/artifacts/etc that speaks to them while moving on quickly from ones they don’t like as much. #flipclass
I agree #flipclass. Some of my colleagues say we shouldn't design so much for students. They say we should let them alone and they "will figure it out". I say no. I think we need to provide them (ss) with some guidance for them to know what to do with their freedom. Makes sense?

Ts must absolutely provide structure. That’s why we’re hired - to be experts in our field. Otherwise education would be nothing but independent study. #flipclass
This nonlinear idea does remind me that when I was in grade 4 and 5, my Ts had us on a contract system. We had to finish a certainty n number of cards of certain colours/categories by week end but we could choose which ones. #flipclasschat#flipclass#NLlearn
... if students were exploring different topics simultaneously (even though with #flipclass they technically could), then my head might explode.
Also it would restrict our ability to work on class discussion skills, since Ss would have different levels of knowledge, so....

Do you use multiple versions of assessments on the different areas? Or could Ss potentially trade w/each other answers to those they’ve done? #flipclass#flipclasschat (had several students “collaborate” on a grade 12 chem exam in June :( )
Yes, that's exactly what it is.
"Student-centered" can also be code for "meh, let the kids just figure it out, while I sit back here and wait for class to end"

Ok, so I’m hearingthat the mind map provides the structure, but shows that it’s more of a set of webs than a railroad? #flipclass#flipclasschat#NLlearn
I'm actually excited about a chance to apply this idea next year and beyond, since my curriculum has just been changed into more of a civics class (less focused on history).
That's why I am taking your mind-maps, spiderweb, #NLlearn idea seriously...with mild devil's advocacy ;)

This is where I’d provide the structure as the T. I can see Ss having difficulty w/connections. There’s where I’m the pier (or lighthouse or anchor, to continue my boating metaphor for @matthew_t_moore) to weave it all together. ⚓️🛥🛶 #flipclass

Mine are not kids (teachers' college), but their academic background is very poor, this they still need lots of guidance. Especially if they will be the teachers of the future. #flipclass#flipclasschat

Do we agree also that Bloom’s Taxonomy is nonlinear? Sometimes in creating something you may discover you don’t know how to do something, so you go down to more basic levels and then come back? Problem-based / project-based) learning? #flipclass#flipclasschat
I tried to do that with a class once - I don’t think I set it up well :(. Will try again as I’ve seen a colleague give an assignment to do just that and the results are great #flipclass#flipclasschat
