Welcome to #Globaledchat! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you did for spring break (autumn break in the Southern Hemisphere). #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
This is Anne (@NisforAnne) for Asia Society, tweeting from Seattle. No spring break for me, but I'll live vicariously through all of your experiences! #globaledchat
A1: You can't think clearly or function physically when you are experiencing sustained hunger. Children's growth is damaged, and there are life long physical effects that haunt them. Communities don't progress when they are being choked with hunger. #globaledchat#TeachSDG
Not a whole lot. Just catching up on projects. Making a video game for my students, writing grants, preparing conferences for the summer. #GlobalEdChat
Hi - I'm Rick, elementary teacher from San Diego, CA - For spring break I am catching up on work around the house and went to school for a half day to catch up on work there! #globaledchat
Hi! I'm Nina and I'll be tweeting for @GlobalCitiesOrg. We're very interested to hear from everyone addressing hunger and food issues in tonight's #GlobalEdChat! Spring break is next week for us, so nothing to report on that yet.
A1. Hunger is urgent because the population keeps expanding, but arable land to produce food decreases. Also, as society develops, a higher demand for protein is observed #GlobalEdChat
Hunger is so important because it can be so invisible in some societies. I work with generally privileged students and even some of them are going hungry everyday. Also you cannot function without food and you lose focus and ability throughout the day. #globaledchat
hello #globaledchat! I am Ligaya. I have worked as a public school teacher in NYC, as an EFL teacher/trainer, and for intl. non-profits working on access to education. I currently support exchange programs for @iEARNUSA. I spent a few days of spring break at the Jersey shore.
A1: Hunger is an urgent global matter because we have sufficient food, but a poor distribution problem. Too many people go hungry while here in US we throw away nearly 50% of our food. Too much waste.
#globaledchat#TeachSDGs
I teach the same general population. The children who do not have food to bring to school sort of mix in with the rest and do not want to call attention to it. I make sure I always have some food in the classroom for them. #globaledchat
A2: Cheap food here in the US is often lacking in nutrients but is high in calories. These are empty calories that don't give the body what it needs to function properly. People are unable to think clearly, and gain an inappropriate amount of weight. #globaledchat#TeachSDG
Waste keeps coming up - and I’m glad it is. Did yo know food waste is also a HUGE user of water, often potable? This is another reason for the globe to address food waste #GlobalEdChat
Agreed! There is a difference that needs to be considered as we aim to meet the needs of developing nations. I predict that poultry will play a huge role in filling the global protein demand #GlobalEdChat
Me, too. I regularly give food to students that I know need it. I check with at least five to ten students a day to make sure that they are eating. #globaledchat
A1 #globaledchat Read a story called Madi’s Fridge to my Kindergarten students... Learned that 1 in 5 children are at risk for food insecurity.. 🌏 Important to build an awareness, create empathy towards each other..
Me, too. I regularly give food to students that I know need it. I check with at least five to ten students a day to make sure that they are eating. #globaledchat
It is a factor of nutrition. Is the food we are eating helping us or actually hurting us over time? Is it teaching students sustainable habits for their lives or are they buying into a lifestyle that is not good for them? Food needs to be quality. #globaledchat
Q1: We live in a world of incredible technological advancements, entrepreneurship, knowledge and resources. Yet, there are millions suffering from hunger. Those hungry will never have the same access to the aboce opportunities and achievements if they remain hungry #globaledchat
A2 I work with inner city families in Grand Rapids and the largest issue we run into is access to low quality processed foods that provide very little nutrition. We need to ensure access to healthier foods that will help students and family live healthier lives. #globaledchat
Totally. Otherwise we will also see worsening strains on health systems and people’s own health budgets as a result of negative consequences from poor nutrition. #GlobalEdChat
A2. Due to advances in food processing and preservation methods, we have created a large quantity of food options, but not all options meet nutritional needs. Often extra calories added to food products #GlobalEdChat
Another factor in the US is cost. Junk food (overall) is inexpensive while good, nutritious food takes more of the budget. #TeachSDGs#SDG2#GlobalEdChat
A2 #globaledchat I think of quality as being fresh, healthy food that sustains and enhances our well being and how this impacts #4 Quality Education of students @TeachSDGs
It’s amazing how even grocery stores in inner cities or poorer communities are set up to have processed/less healthy foods at the entrance as you walk in #GlobalEdChat

A2- pre processed food in the us is generally cheaper and has less nutritional value. Some urban neighborhoods dont have easy access to fresh, non processed food. Brains and bodies dont function as well or as long with processed foods as with fresh. #GlobalEdChat
A1: my first thought joining this chat was “I’ve never been hungry due to poverty.” What a privilege that is. It is an urgent problem b/c extreme hunger adversely affects families’ & communities’ ability to address every other aspect of poverty and get out of it. #globaledchat
A3: We read texts like Kaffir Boy that discuss in detail what it feels like to be hungry day after day. The students can experience the effects through the character without actually feeling them. #globaledchat
I can totally see this issue's impact on my life. I ate poorly when I was younger due to poverty and now I have a taste for cheap foods, but I know that I should be more nutrition conscious. I don't want my students to experience the same issues #globaledchat
This recent and heartbreaking story supports your point--student test scores go up in U.S. soon after families get food stamps. Many kids are just too hungry to focus. https://t.co/aXQpd7cxKc#GlobalEdChat
A2 #globaledchat I like the idea of school gardens that help promote healthy sustainability around food and foster preparation instead of what is easy and convenient to buy(not so great food)
In the US and globally we need better and more advantageously regulated food systems where nutritious options are affordable and accessible #GlobalEdChat

#globaledchat Exactly! I don't rush to say this is systematic, but it definitely presents an issue to those students who can't get the calories and nutrition they need to sit through a full school day.
A3: Start by choosing a local food issue and then link it to the global. I love this example of how an ag teacher got started with #globaled (now she takes students abroad every year!). https://t.co/ZrexajoxSi#globaledchat#TeachSDGs

A3. My FFA chapter, @CV_FFA1954, hosts a “Hunger Banquet” every 2-3 years. Attendees dine in the shoes of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd world nations to understand the differences that exist. Sends a strong message to anyone that attends #GlobalEdChat

#Globaledchat Same with me. I have food everyday to give as reward. For few instances, students came to me after breakfast, trading in their food. That's quite funny.
A3 We developed a board game for students ages 10-13 to highlight obstacles and supports to food security. After playing, Ss discuss parallels between issues in the game and in their community. #GlobalScholars#GlobalEdChat

That is funny that they trade in their food. I like how it is the reward, so nobody knows the difference is one of the kids has some of it. #globaledchat
A3: KIDS Can Make a Difference is a fantastic resource for teaching about hunger and poverty, identifying causes, and generating solutions. https://t.co/iToEl6dQDX#globaledchat
I brought in a poverty specialist and a refugee counselor as guest speakers early this year and they did a great job highlighting poverty and hunger throughout their discussions. It gave students a real world, expert view that I cannot give myself. That is important #globaledchat
A3: We weighed the amount of food thrown away at a Monday school lunch. It was separated into taken but not touched and eaten but not finished. We talked with students and decreased waaste the next week.#TeachSDGs#SDG6#GlobalEdChat
YES! Food and nutrition “deserts” are a real thing, even where there is food available. Many cities experience this and it disrupts people’s time and productivity as they take time to travel to gather few food items for their family #GlobalEdChat

A3: There is also a fantastic online project called Finding Solutions to Hunger where classrooms around the world learn about and take action on hunger through virtual exchange. Check it out here: https://t.co/kCa5MQIR4s@iEARNUSA#globaledchat#SDG2
A4: My family and I volunteer each week for Urban Gleaners and pick up food that would otherwise be wasted by a local grocery store and drop it off to be redistributed to people in need. https://t.co/ewAfhRqCLh#globaledchat

A4: When we finished weighing our food Ss decided the waste was the fault of the cafeteria workers because they MAKE them fill their trays. Hacafe mgr speak to upper grade students about serving requirements and portion size. #GlobalEdChat
A4: We have discussed through our texts. Kaffir Boy, Night, etc... Our freshmen also go on an overnight earth science camp at the outer banks. At the camp, attention is focused on amount of food left on their plates, what happens to that food, & the wastefulness. #globaledchat
I teach English and creative writing. We do a slow burn PBL where students choose their own topics and I have been surprised how often poverty and hunger come up. #globaledchat
A4: no longer in the classroom, but we do service learning school-wide. It'd be awesome to have a school wide theme where grade levels tackle levels of the issue. We're developing a sustainable community garden, free fruit and vegetables for snack and community. #GlobalEdChat
A4 - It is a hard subject as most of my students are engaged in farming and already have sustainability on the brain. So we talk about the local issues students are facing within driving distance and global issues, particularly with refugees and immigration #globaledchat

A4: Some amazing educators and students from Winchester, VA conducted a Hunger Banquet to simulate hunger disparities around the world. Here is a video from it: https://t.co/LnEebeyLOq@tweetwps#globaledchat
Really glad you brought up refugees and migrants. Not only do they often end up without proper food in their new locations, but also with food they are not accustomed to or prefer #GlobalEdChat

There's a great organization here in Seattle called Global to Local, and they work with mostly refugee populations on health issues. There's a huge emphasis on nutrition and healthy eating. #GlobalEdChat

A5 - I try to keep it local. Bring in examples from my community like people who work at the @UnitedWay or local homeless shelters. We have a great teenage shelter in my area and I am bringing them in next year for a talk with my students. Local is always good. #globaledchat
A1) As a global community, we’ve been socially conditioned to ignore the plight of others. As a global community, we have to stop rationalizing poverty as a “distant” issue. #GlobalEdChat

It takes place over the entire year. Rather than being a single unit, through differentiation and planning we come back to their topics at least once a month. That way students are researching and learning at all times on a subject they love #globaledchat

Agreed. We have a really active group of students that do a lot of service learning, but I am lobbying for a change to our incentive system to add a visit to local food banks and homeless shelters so that students have real world experience. #globaledchat
A3) Students need to understand the emotions and struggle behind hunger, not just the definition. In this respect, we are failing our students by denying them the truth. #GlobalEdChat
Yea definitely. Youth globally are always looking for and needing more exchange visits or field trip opportunities to gain different perspectives and solutions #GlobalEdChat

A6: At the Global Leadership Summit on Friday a teacher talked about this. She advised not to have kids donate to food pantries as that won’t get at the cause of hunger and helps perpetuate it. Instead, teach them about the systems causing the issue instead. #globaledchat

A6: After surveying their schools about food waste, #GlobalScholars analyzed results, were often shocked, and proposed solutions. Some ideas: composting, donating to local food banks, buying less food, and--from San Diego--a "share table." #GlobalEdChat
Yes - in development work we try NOT to ever distribute food. This is a band aid that helps emergency situations. We need to overhaul the system so food provisions are not needed #GlobalEdChat

Exactly. I am 100% excited to some Mystery Skype or international @flipgrid next summer to get my students (and myself) to be more global. #globaledchat
Q6: The adage Think Global, Act Local is the best way to tackle the issue. What can I do? What can my class do? What can my school do? What can our community do? #TeachSDGs#SDG6#GlobalEdChat
To change system we largely need improved income generation and improved advocacy around policies. Food aid should ideally occur alongside the above so we start to see a shift in need #GlobalEdChat
I found out our local landfill offers field trips. That is an eye opener to our problem of waste and sustainability. Just not convinced parents will want to chaperone that trip! #TeachSDGs#SDG6#GlobalEdChat
A2: I don’t know. If we’re talking about extreme poverty, a calorie is basically a calorie, right? Of course, access to healthy, quality food is better than access to bad food. But access to bad food is better than access to no food. #globaledchat

I participated in a Hunger Banquet as a student and that left a lasting impression on me. It was a really practical and lived way to simulate hunger disparities around the world. #globaledchat
In theory, yes. But not on a macro level as we then start to see health deterioration and stagnated food markets where subpar food subsistence is accepted and health costs offset pockets and strain health care systems #GlobalEdChat

A6) @CampCreekMiddle, I had students research different components that impact poverty in their community. As a group, they discussed their findings via @Flipgrid. Next, students will design solutions and enact them in the community. #GlobalEdChat

A6: Use those community partnerships (local food banks, shelters, small farmers, etc.) to connect your students with local issues and resources. This is the process we use: https://t.co/NzTTsyUimD#GlobalEdChat
Thanks for having me @AsiaSocietyEDU! Was great to learn of so many new resources and the GREAT work so many educators are doing to build awareness about hunger. With such local and youth focused action, we CAN #EndHunger#ZeroHunger#GlobalEdChat
