Hi, Rachel from Rochester, MI. I would love to spend the holidays in Italy to celebrate with and meet some of my extended family there. #globaled#globaledchat
Lauren from NY - 6th grade English teacher and author of EMPOWER Your Students. Iโd love to spend Hanukkah in Australia with my cousins. #globaledchat
Thanks @hsingmaster !! It has been a hectic and busy year!! I often am just sitting down for dinner at this time... or trying to do work. #globaledchat
Mike, Tech Integrator/TOSA from NY. Love being able to make a #globaledchat. Hope to hang in for a bit with you. I'd love to spend holidays in ๐ธ๐ช with extended family too. Haven't been back since '94. Far too long.
Ken from Western Oregon Univ & Center for Geography Education in Oregon. Many places would be great, but I'll go w/ Suriname, since I could visit w/ friends from when was in @PeaceCorps#globaledchat
Q1 I used a weirdly hello every morning and incorporate how we say hello in different languages. We start with celebrating the diversity in our classroom and expand it to cover things we study throughout the year. I teach Kindergarten so they think it is cool. #globaledchat
A1: We at Asia Society could definitely improve our communications with the parent community. #Globaledchat is one of our main outlets for doing so right now.
A1... I am here to learn! I have done a newsletter for parents when starting our global unit in fifth gr and last year when I had Peruvian Artists visit my school #globaledchat
A1 W/ parents I often found they were receptive to pointing out how GE skills are important skills for their children to know for their future learning & career #globaledchat
A1 We've used @Seesaw to share projects. Also have posted to our district website and Eagle Express news. In the future it would be great to have an evening event for families to share ways we actively integrate #globaled into the curriculum. #globaledchat
A1 Parents need to understand how #globaled supports meaningful learning. We can also coach them to ask their kids questions about what theyโve learned and why it matters. #globaledchat
Hi @growingupglobal Thanks for chiming in! Yes, it's a great book. I'm living proof as a parent of a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural daughter. #globaledchat
A1: Ask students and their families: What is your vision for you/your student? And, what might success look like in a globally networked society? We need to help families and students #rethinksuccess#globaledchat
A1: I share GE skills via the books I recommend in my parent newsletter. Iโm working hard to make sure all Ss voices, cultures, religions, and beliefs are shared and represented. #globaledchat
A1 W/ parents I often found they were receptive to pointing out how GE skills are important skills for their children to know for their future learning & career #globaledchat
A1 #globaledchat I invite families to engage and participate via @padlet@Twitter@Skype@GoogleHangout This way they experience value of having conversations outside of our class and how the experience of connecting globally enriches our learning.
That is key. Don't want them to think it is being done for any other reason than to extend quality learning experiences and build better citizens, our main goal. #globaledchat
A1 Sometimes US HS Ss forget why it's worth it to spend time on homework. They forget there's competition. I send out an article now & then to remind them. #globaledchat
Some yes... some no. I had parents who were involved in the "homework" I sent home about their family cultural heritage... others not so much. #globaledchat
A1: This year we also started the year off with a celebration of #worldpeace by installing a peace pole outside our school. Then asked parents and Ss to share what peace meant to them. https://t.co/69UgDJXEUd#globaledchat
#globaledchat It is so wonderful because it offers an invitation to engage and be a part of what is important... children and what they are learning... all parents want to be involved...
I also could see a community @Flipgrid around these ideas being beneficial. Anywhere, anytime conversation. Great way to share, celebrate, connect, question and learn. #FlipgridFever#globaledchat

A2: Parents are busy and they tend to get a lot of communication from the school, district, and teachers. Sometimes things get lost or they don't know what to focus on. #globaledchat
Great ideas. In two previous schools on International Peace Day we had kids all where white t-shirts and form a huge peace symbol and then used a drone to take an aerial shot of the group! #globaledchat
A1 W/ parents I often found they were receptive to pointing out how GE skills are important skills for their children to know for their future learning & career #globaledchat
I think about the value of sharing our own global experiences via blogging and content. Include families, ask them for their ideas.. Have they traveled? Where? Are their opportunities for them to share their experiences? #globaledchat
Language barriers for some, but mostly so many work so much that time is an issue. I have been blessed to have good relationships w/parents though. #globaledchat
A2 I have encountered parents who have troubled understanding why we teach things that they were't taught / in a different way. Kids have so many opportunities now but parents expect school to be the same. #Globaledchat
I write a blog myself and find that parents often want to talk about my recent travels. I also come into the school during Int'l Week and give a presentation. It helps to be on-site w/ the kids & see teachers together. #globaledchat
A1) The best way is to invite parents to experience the importance of global competency through student spotlight projects. Sometimes, you need to shakeup traditional roles by empowering students to foster growth for parents. #globaledchat
A2 #globaledchat Parents are busy for sure.. But if we, teachers can engage and help our students get excited about what we are exploring they in turn will be relentless with talking at home and asking parents to check class blog and Twitter feed.
A2: Parents are not a homogenous grouping. The best approach is to ask questions when meeting w/ families and students | Intentionally hold time for those meetings, exhibitions, + student-led meetings. Then, LISTEN. #globaledchat#shareyourlearning#deeperlearning

A1 and A2 #globaledchat As an ambassador for the @teachsdgs I share this with my families and they are invested and curious about how they can support our work and learning with the @TheGlobalGoals Look for ways in your local community to make a difference.
The Peace Pole is placed outside the front of our school as a symbol of our commitment to world peace. May Peace Prevail on Earth is written in different languages along all of its sides. It's a beautiful representation of the diversity of our school.
A3: I think interest in #globaled can definitely begin in the home at a young age. We always tried to hire babysitters who could speak a 2nd language. #globaledchat
A2 Parents sometime have a different agenda than teachers do: they want their kids to get good grades and feel happy, when meaningful learning often requires false starts, failures, and frustrations. #globaledchat
that's a great way to integrate foreign language esp when you aren't bilingual yourself. even if kids don't pick it up right away, having exposure is key. #globaledchat
A2 A challenge that could blossom into a great opportunity is that some may not have any personal experiences to understand the true value. #globaledchat
Interesting. My experience is that all parents desperately want their children to succeed but schools rarely help them see the value of what we offer. #Globaledchat
A3: I think global competence can begin at a young age at home. We need to have open and honest discussions with our children, provide opportunities for them to grow in their understanding of the world, and help them to listen and learn from others. #globaledchat
yes, honesty is best policy w/ kids. leading by example and being open to finding those teaching moments when it comes to #globalcompetence is important. #globaledchat
I write a blog myself and find that parents often want to talk about my recent travels. I also come into the school during Int'l Week and give a presentation. It helps to be on-site w/ the kids & see teachers together. #globaledchat
A3: Absolutely. It should be fostered in school from an early age as well, but what happens at home has a huge impact. I used to tell my students that they could either follow good models or counteract bad ones at home, and encouraged deep reflection. #globaled#Globaledchat
A3 A global mindset, skillset, and tools to support a global education are mutually reinforced at home, at school, and (increasingly) online and through hybrid learning experiences #globaledchat@GOAlearning Example: https://t.co/kFzv9Gun9z#globaled
A4: Reading #global books; visiting local international stores or festivals; watching international movies. For older kids, reading international news sites together and discussing differences with domestic news. #globaledchat
A4: @Kiva is a great platform for research and important conversations about the power imbalance in the world and the importance of our responsibility for others. #globaledchat
I agree. I don't think we should discount technology here - there are a lot of great tools at our disposal. Thanks for adding this to the mix! #globaledchat
I did a graphic organizer asking families to help their kids brainstorm symbols that represented their cultural heritage- like traditions and beliefs #globaledchat
This is why I attempt to integrate these principles. I've found that while it would be ideal if they would come with exposure, many do not. This fuels the WHY. Ss are naturally curious and want to learn. It makes it easier to jump in and get them excited. #globaledchat
Parents serve as a powerful model for global learning & social action, but reality is that curious kids often (HOPEFULLY) lead parents who may have been socially conditioned to stay in their own bubbles. #globaledchat
A4 expose their children to different ethnic groups in area, travel, watch the news w/ the child & discuss stories, read stories from different cultures (also, same theme from different cultural persp) #globaledchat
A3 I really like what @JoySunBear offers for younger learners at home (and in school). I plan to share some of their activities and new interactive website with my 4 year old here are home over the upcoming holiday break. #globaledchat
A3: I think global competence can begin at a young age at home. We need to have open and honest discussions with our children, provide opportunities for them to grow in their understanding of the world, and help them to listen and learn from others. #globaledchat
so true! kids are often leading the way and we don't give them enough credit at times. It's the introduction at school sometimes that can get them asking more questions at home. The key is having parents open to answering questions or provoking further curiosity. #globaledchat
The lsn has evolved over the yrs. I find my Ss who are caucasian sometimes struggle the most w/it. I teach in a diverse system.. some Ss really have a strong understanding/pride of their heritage/culture. #globaledchat
A4: When my nieces were little, they LOVED exploring @BarefootBooks World Atlas app, which is interactive and wonderful for sparking curiosity and further #globaled inquiry. #globaledchat
A5 #globaledchat Last year I had an amazing family from South korea. They visited Kindergarten and shared some tea that ther family made. Wonderful to meet people from another part of the world and learn some new language.
A3: I wonder about the possibilities that might come from bringing students/families together through a collaborative dialogue, project etc. Participation matters. #Globaledchat
Important for parents to Take a Stand; make global citizenship one of their family values and then work backwards to figure out how that's translated in their home/life. #globaledchat
A5 #globaledchat A family visited Kindergarten and played drums from their country with others... Amazing... Then they played at a cultural school event. Find ways to highlight interests of others to share what they are passionate about.
Hmm, depends. I often taught students who wanted to help their parents or extended family to be more open-minded, so it was hard to keep that smooth. But both globally-minded and more closed parents should be invited to be part of #globaled events and experiences. #globaledchat
A5: Share any global connections your job may entail so students can see the usefulness of global competence. Provide global artifacts; share information about other countries visited, or help facilitate contacts with experts abroad. #globaledchat
A5: I have a wonderful group of parent volunteers who help to recommend books to purchase for our library that represent their culture, beliefs, and religion. I value the input and expertise they have to offer. #globaled#globaledchat
In April 6th gr Ss made clay tiles of representing their cultural heritage w/guest Peruvian artists. They were permanently installed last month at our school. I am so proud of our work. #globaledchat
I just visited my daughter's preschool and brought in Korean costumes and snacks. It was at their level and fairly basic but it was an introduction to something new in the least. #globaledchat
A5: have parents come to read or tell their favorite stories either in a different language or one that opens a door to a different culture. #globaledchat
Snacks are a GREAT way to share a culture! Everyone likes snacks! #globaledchat My mom brought my class a big bag of dried squid from Vietnam and every kid tried squid!
A4. Conduct a Self-Organized Learning Environment (SOLE) developed by Sugata Mitra #globaledchat | Foster young people's curiosity and inquisitiveness through open-ended questions and @GlimmerGuy book "A More Beautiful Question" https://t.co/9CZTvMl7oy#globaledchat#inquiry
Sure thing! We love it. @MattMurrie and @EvinSchwartz brought Belouga & curiosity based learning to our Ss in October and it has been a game changer. Definitely check it out! #globaledchat

@jghymn, @Belouga_, @MattMurrie, @EvinSchwartz
#globaledchat loving these ideas... it's difficult to hold an event for parents at HS level for one class, but we have opportunities now to share digitally and there are new ways to promote conversation and student voice
A5 Parents canโt just prepare foods and bring artifacts. We donโt want to exoticize/otherize. Can parents share stories of immigration? Travel? Difficult moments in developing multicultural competency? Kids need to see that the work is real, hard, & worthwhile. #globaledchat
A3 #globaledchat You would wish it would start at home but we have kids showing up in K who don't know any letters...if parents aren't reading to their kids, they probably aren't doing much for global competence.
A5 Have a Global Ed Family Night at school w/ world games, music, etc. Parents w/ the skillsets can volunteer, others can come learn & play w/ the kids #globaledchat
Important point. We have to help Ss understand the complexity of any culture and can oversimplify to the detriment of a deeper understanding of our shared humanity #globaledchat

sometimes it's the not so ordinary things though that can introduce a child to global competence or understanding - more from behaviors or things happening around them rather than rote memorization of letters. you never know when a spark may occur! #globaledchat
A6: There are global games - or games that can be played with others around the world. Relatives in other countries can be easily contacted via Skype. Internet allows access to news around the globe. #Globaledchat
Yes! I'm living proof that this is successful. I've been to my daughter's preschool a few times to read a book from a different culture. It opens their minds! #globaledchat
A6: sorry for being late. My daughter was replying, via recorded video, to her friends class in Barcelona. They are doing a joint study on the impact of knowing more than one language. #globaledchat
A6 Ps can explore the world w/ child using tech (i.e. geoguessr, droneguessr, world music, Google Earth). Educators can have video conferencing global classroom exchanges & invite Ps to help Ss reflect on experience #globaledchat
I LOVE KIVA!!!! #globaledchat You make an initial $25 loan and it gets paid back. Then you choose from all the different people and countries to loan it back out. We have re-loaned the same money over and over!!!
This year your kids scrape up $25 and loan it, next year's kids re-loan it and scrape up $25 for a second loan, the next year re-loan that $50 and scrape up $25 more. In a few years you would have several loans going out each year. #globaledchat
A6 It can accelerate connections, communication, & opportunities. Compiling a video, website or blog to share experiences w parents can be helpful. We've used @kutoaorg, @PenpalSchools, @EmpaticoOrg, @Belouga_, @Seesaw Connected blogs, and shared w/ families. #globaledchat
A3) I donโt think it matters which direction you start in. I do initiate conversations as a parent, talking about the most important current events and issues. #GlobalEdChat
@TeachSDGs Anyone can apply who cares about helping promote the well being of the planet.. The new cohort was just announced. Not sure when new applications will be open. #globaledchat
A5: have parents come to read or tell their favorite stories either in a different language or one that opens a door to a different culture. #globaledchat
@Flipgrid is interactive. Most others are starting points for experiences, empathy building, etc. The dialogue starts from there. After, students build narratives and send messages with storytelling tech (I'll send a new tweet with my favorites) #globaledchat

#globaledchat I know I bring this up every week :0) NNSTOY has an online Social Justice Book List that has a lot of culture/race/religion books on it. It is a really great resource. https://t.co/DypbolmzMo
A7: The holidays bring up topics of empathy, kindness, respect, and tolerance - talk about how they are critical to global competence and how they are necessary all year long! #globaledchat
We have an active global STEM hub between us, ๐จ๐ฆ & ๐จ๐ณ. The conversations and problem solving is inspiring. @Flipgrid is making SO MUCH possible. Our Ts are learning just as much if not more than the Ss. Unitended benefit! #globaledchat

A3 I think its got to start at home. If not 4-5 years is such a long time developmentally for kids to not have the exposure needed for global competence. The sooner the better- at broadening those horizons! #globaledchat
A2 I have encountered parents who have troubled understanding why we teach things that they were't taught / in a different way. Kids have so many opportunities now but parents expect school to be the same. #Globaledchat
A1: This is an area I would like to work on. I speak more with my SS & provide them with information about SS learning and their cultures around the ๐& how they are similar/different. I use the literature & Social Studies concepts to build connections. #GlobalEdChat
A7 Appreciating and understanding similarities and differences can take us to new heights. That fuels kindness. A key to successful collaboration and potential problem solving, needed in this ๐. #globaledchat.
I think parents need to have their own community of fellow parents and teachers who can discuss openly the need for #globaled among students. It can start at school or at home, but this conversation needs to be fostered. #globaledchat
I imagine part of it is simply exposure. Prominent people speak of growing up with lively dinner table conversations about politics, issues of the day. #GlobalEdChat

A7: At a very simple level, sharing a favorite holiday or seasonal tradition. Students could then choose a tradition they'd like to learn more about #globaledchat
