thanks for the DM, Brian. Glad to have shared. Here if you need anything. Let's GH soon!
My district is going through the OIP process, focusing on the gap data.
Nice to see you Mo this evening on .
Great you could join us again Sierra
Maria from North Union.... Richwood, Ohio . New assistant principal and loving it!!!!
Good evening all. Multitasking but hope to contribute a bit and read along as well.
A1: My district is going through the OIP process, focusing on the gap data.
Terry superintendent Talladega
love when my fellow (former) New Yorkers represent with !
Great topic tonight. One I personally lack experience in. Ready to learn.
A1: We can't just jump on every bandwagon that we encounter - have to research to find the right fit.
We knew we had to bring the heat to keep you awake! and I are bringing it tonight!
Hop in. Ask questions. Don't worry.
that first question is a toughie
Lots of states here tonight! Pressure is on Neil!
Ryan, GLHS, Alt.Instruction
A1: research has be the foundation of all initiatives. Need to demonstrate effectiveness before roll-out.
Welcome to the one and only and growing, ! Glad you could drop by, Sandy! https://t.co/tmBvYxwEIk
Hello friends! Sandy- passionate 5th grade teacher here from Utah ready to learn with/from all of the eduheroes here!
. We definitely need to GH before they shut it down!!
https://t.co/wHgHLl2iQj
thanks for the DM, Brian. Glad to have shared. Here if you need anything. Let's GH soon!
A1. Up to this point, education has been guided by admin who sometimes keeps up w/ research. Now Ts are being guided by research.
A1: We set up a committee and do research to see if it would meet the needs of our S's.
A1: Need to have good data, along with insight, before making any sort of change. Otherwise it's throwing darts blindly
A1 I hope with care. It seems you need to know your audience and how the research applies to them to be effective
Excited to be here with you, - we share a personal connection. My wife is from Oregon - Crystal Wells (Tom's sister)
A1: Program evaluation is very important for alignment with system initiatives.
A1: I have been digging in to the Hattie research to keep me focused on high-yield strategies!
We are working on that as well. Digging into data right now.
welcome back to ! Glad to have you here once again!
A1: Does it enhance our mission/vission/goals? Not everything is a right fit for everybody.
Great you could make it Brett
A1 Data(if accurate) identifies strengths and weaknesses and should be used to allocate resources appropriately.
just might be the best answer to Q1 https://t.co/gNOhSbt14U
A1: My district is going through the OIP process, focusing on the gap data.
is not messing around tonight. Q1 is serious stuff!!
Z Glad to be here, my friend! Thank you!
A1: Need to not only read the scholarly research, but also look to other schools that face similar problems. See what works.
Hello my friend! I should have my admin assignment by Fri --following your leadership role model :) No pressure!
Thanks for being here Diane
such powerful work! We have been doing the same to guide our work with school improvement.
A1: research assists w/ identifying the need. No 2 schools have same culture or set of circumstances leading to different methods
A1: My instinctive response...research does not influence our school imp goals enough
A1: I don't just want to see data, I want to see it in person if possible. Visit schools, etc.
Thanks for joining Ray. Always great to have you
I love seeing such great leaders come out on a Wednesday night - we got great questions tonight!
A1 research allows identification of best practices....which should drive school initiatives
representing with tonight! BAM!
Alicia Nussbaum, MS ELA/SS Ottoville Local in my first chat
I believe looking at the gap data is a good opportunity to improve and serve our neediest Ss.
A1: Just as we ask our teachers to use data to drive instruction, we must use research to best plan and execute initiatives.
There's no wading in the water - jump off that high dive!
A. Research is important to share with all stakeholders before implementing a program or initiative. Don't forget to include S's!
A1: research is what uncovers the data to know what the students NEED and a reason behind an initiative to help succeed
Looking forward to the chat tonight.
Must identify what needs to be improved and research best practices to see what works.
A1: Acknowledge that not all initiatives are "right." Find one that's high yield and research based and focus intently
well about time, Jena! Welcome to !
A1. More and more research available for us to sort through as data increases each day.
and you can do everything at one time!
Just because something is trendy or popular doesn't mean it is solid.
A1 It is important to understand where the needs of the building and then look at research in the best ways to address needs
A1 data, data, data. Seeing what students lack to better target time and efforts
A1 Focus starts with high yield strategies on student learning and filtering the rest
A1: District should be solid in their vision and use research to match the initiative that will serve that vision.
I seem to review it every year to keep me straight. and I are contemplating getting Hattie tattoos!
Absolutely!
Stay calm and answer Q1!!
https://t.co/bcy3nT4H7x
There's no wading in the water - jump off that high dive!
A:1 I wish someone taught leaders how 2 strategically address & efficiently undertake the best way of picking which research 2 use
a1: We base data on our school improvement plans every year! I love data!
A1 Educational "research" is too often manipulated to serve multiple masters. Common sense, T input, & pilot programs are better.
A1 Research - whether scholarly or anecdotal - vets new initiatives to your community. Gives your ideas some perspective or teeth.
Great point-research schools and districts and reach out, go visit. https://t.co/7NGwIciIfk
A1: I don't just want to see data, I want to see it in person if possible. Visit schools, etc.
Yep - might work for you, but not for us.
A1: important to look at your data: visualize if program will work based on your community, culture, Ss, Ts & current programs
OIP = Ohio Improvement Process
A1: most inititaves should be "adapted" to fit our schools not "adopted" as be all end all
She's also on the tribe - can we both claim her?
A1 also through knowing students. I know mine struggle with writing so I have a few writing assignments every week
For non-Ohioans, OIP is the Ohio Improvement Process - a data-based decision making process
RT
Q1: How is research incorporated in the identification & implementation of a school initiative?
A1: Our Ss deserve the best data and practice tested initiatives. If we simply guess or go on gut, it's a disservice to them
daughters VB game! Go Prexies!!!
Hi ! Good to see some other NW Ohio folks representing!
A1 Look @ data to ident areas 4 improve - look extens @ research 2 ident strong method of attack Focus on this - protect frm whims
Meeting the needs of our students-key philosophy...what works for one school may not work for another https://t.co/uf1C9ZnvIj
A1: We set up a committee and do research to see if it would meet the needs of our S's.
Agree, would love targeted PD for that https://t.co/ZWKZ9Z5Dl7
A:1 I wish someone taught leaders how 2 strategically address & efficiently undertake the best way of picking which research 2 use
Great point! It has to connect back to your needs!
Thanks for being here Lori. Love your regular input
agreed. Question is how do we decide which is the best plan to serve versus what gets set aside
Yes, similar schools/districts is important! https://t.co/lWeaFUsPmL
A1: Need to not only read the scholarly research, but also look to other schools that face similar problems. See what works.
Yes. We are trying to jump on data for this year's Ss, not just last year's.
A1-we must be HONEST about the data-step back and look at what it's really telling us-don't just see what we want to see
Love it! Get real feedback from people using it!
A1: the issues isn’t always MORE data but it’s getting the RIGHT data to influence instruction.
A1 we are using the Mitchell Minute, no data about results.
I'll remember to use the word "commitment" when explaining it to my wife!
as points out, research can point us in productive directions, but we shouldn't slavishly follow it.
Great point - can't simply follow a recipe for success - season it to your individual taste. https://t.co/aAjDHpWFhT
A1: most inititaves should be "adapted" to fit our schools not "adopted" as be all end all
A1: I often think we rely on the wrong research. What if the research was internally driven by the staff and not standardized?
Super honored to be learning with you!
Congrats Maria! Thanks for joining us - hopefully you will be a regular to continue your growth
A1: Collaborately. All leaders teachers. Teachers leaders. Read and learn together.
Agreed. The vision should drive the research and initiatives https://t.co/ZqTA6F3fOl
A1: District should be solid in their vision and use research to match the initiative that will serve that vision.
A1: It's most comprehensive when research is a balance of qualitative and quantitative. Numbers and scenarios working together.
Hop? Cannon ball in! They aren't messing around! :)
this is deep! I also find it critical that there unfortunately is not a lot that understand what the numbers mean
I will have to look it up later. Thanks!
Also to think about: Research is important, but how do we ensure fidelity of the initiative?
A1: building project included community research and student learning research. planning
***Q2 is coming up in one minute!
A1: we aren't hardcore researchers, as practitioners; use action research such as to Capture-Curate-Share big data
Me too. Wrestling w/ Hattie's challenges gut feelings, hunches, and "the way we've always done it".
good point re: numbers and stories
A1 Data & research mentioned, but not the same, collecting data-based on research? What is data telling us, how was it collected!
in the same breath, I don't want to do what everyone else does-I want 2 create something that hasn't been done yet
A1 Implemented w/ full research or w/ soft approach, school improvement must have research & data or its not valid! period!
Q2: Reduction - What initiatives have been reduced in your school/district in order to focus on needs? https://t.co/mOVCp2wJ1a
Good point! And if it's not working, when to cut your losses.
https://t.co/cwdTa0rDpP
Also to think about: Research is important, but how do we ensure fidelity of the initiative?
Research helps explain the 'why are we doing this?' Also important to understand your culture and Staff capacity to implement
A1 Too many schools try 2 adapt & customize research, then implement poorly. Research results r based on effective implementation
Very true. And sometimes this is very difficult.
I agree. Need the right data to see if the new initiative will work & be successful https://t.co/KitmwnY77v
A1: the issues isn’t always MORE data but it’s getting the RIGHT data to influence instruction.
the conversations are a must! Can't shoot from the hip when community is involved. Committing to the data is key
One of my favorite PLNs! Always engaging!
That reminds me of the book Moneyball. Use the right data.
And also have stakeholders with multiple views assess the same data so no bias is influencing decisions https://t.co/0PO29Gjr2e
A1-we must be HONEST about the data-step back and look at what it's really telling us-don't just see what we want to see
Maybe! yells at me if I am late or miss ! Caught me!
then we waste a year guessing https://t.co/NkAX5sohfP
this is deep! I also find it critical that there unfortunately is not a lot that understand what the numbers mean
Own the data! Good or bad in order to move forward
I think I understand...please explain https://t.co/083Hrnqbvy
A1: I often think we rely on the wrong research. What if the research was internally driven by the staff and not standardized?
all depends on what we consider "valid" research and data - can be local or international - but what's most useful?
A2: Gosh, I feel like we are adding the past couple of years......
great point! We often skip this part and hope for good results and then wonder why we didn't improve.
knowing the difference between your vision and your reality helps you find your needs.
I think 1) look to research evidence that exists, 2) collect own contextual data, analyse, iterate 3) repeat.
I'm cringing at the thought of lost time
love this! Know your audience
A2. We collaboratively developed SMART goals that this year guide the work and PLC weekly data focuses. https://t.co/d6kJDmcDdz
We like to say "no such thing as 'bad' data" only instructive data.
Good stuff https://t.co/Jf8sekmZ0P
A1: It's most comprehensive when research is a balance of qualitative and quantitative. Numbers and scenarios working together.
Also good to pilot possible adoptions to determine if it is a right fit for your Ss
Yep! Love the spirit, humor, and insights from you, Teresa! You are stuck with us!
it can feel that way for sure. Lot of changes happening.
If principals don't understand data- how/when Ts supposed to understand it for classroom level?
A2: From what I know in my district, it's more about targeting and refining our efforts better.
Action research is one of my fave ways to test out a new initiative-start out in a few areas-collect date https://t.co/iI8YTrZfm4
A1: we aren't hardcore researchers, as practitioners; use action research such as to Capture-Curate-Share big data
A2: Rigor, Relevance, & Relationships initiative got pushed aside to make room for Standards Referenced Practices
A1: Research is important, but must be used with staff in digestible pieces.... Steady patient course.
https://t.co/DeIcd3TuQV
- not enough. So many things are held tight that are traditions but not student centered or research based
this is so true. Once we get into the silo, the vacuum, the echo chamber, the data loses all purpose. We've lost.
It is often really surprising to me what has really low effect sizes !
Q1a https://t.co/AUGyuzvbEH
Also to think about: Research is important, but how do we ensure fidelity of the initiative?
Profound! I love it - definitely helps to clarify!
Seems like we're always comparing ourselves to districts that are not comparable. One size does not fit all.
I think research can be anecdotal.
What has worked in other places and WHY?
https://t.co/sAql5nDbod
I think I understand...please explain https://t.co/083Hrnqbvy
A1: I often think we rely on the wrong research. What if the research was internally driven by the staff and not standardized?
So important 2 learn frm those who have similar experiences-should learn w/ "neighbors" doesn't have 2B a competition
A2 I'm in year 2 of current district, so I don't know what's been reduced but we r continuing focus w/out adding anything new
A1: research and data drive decisions: but is it the correct data? And what is it all REALLY saying? How will you drive that bus? 🤔
Ha! I love that you are on this chat, Virginia! Definitely relates to FIP!
A2. We have gone away from district initiatives and now focus on what our students need to be successful.
Do you think we have too much of this in education ? https://t.co/XgKgYxE0Se
in the same breath, I don't want to do what everyone else does-I want 2 create something that hasn't been done yet
A2: reduce sit & get PD with job-embedded => making PD about what you do in class https://t.co/VizyubMHpU
Q2: Reduction - What initiatives have been reduced in your school/district in order to focus on needs? https://t.co/mOVCp2wJ1a
Me too. No need to judge, better to think of data as a stepping stone than a brick to hit ourselves w/
A2 Initiatives we are not committed to or produce results must be abandoned.
Absolutely, my building principal did that as we reviewed our gap data, https://t.co/L33hYvok6T
Seems like we're always comparing ourselves to districts that are not comparable. One size does not fit all.
Late start but here now! Annalee from WI.
A2: In my district, adding 1:1 computing will be transforming instruction.
A2 Our super fixed the buildings rather than banking on a building levy.
Has ANYTHING been taken off the platter? Can't think of one thing! Just continually adding on and on and on
Please share links to this research to enlighten others, TY
Kind of a "let's not do anything new until we nail this" attitude, right?
A2: We have reduced the number of goals for our CIP and have made a stand to keep them for the next 3-4 years!
A2: it takes a great leader to say “no” to good initiatives that don’t align to your vision and mission.
so true! Why reinvent wheel if other schools have solid research that can help guide work w/ tweeks for our school.
almost need a six sigma training for principals. https://t.co/s8EjnuvNvR
If principals don't understand data- how/when Ts supposed to understand it for classroom level?
A2: so many initiatives: academic, character, athletic, professional development, etc.
The book was way better, as usual.
Oh, do you work in my district? LOL.
Yes!! Build a deep foundation first https://t.co/Tdm61mZLiP
Kind of a "let's not do anything new until we nail this" attitude, right?
Agreed! Willing to share what's worked & hasn't, and eager to hear what's worked & hasn't for others.
A2 My district prioritizes initiatives that put students first. PD is organic and educator-driven. We are the lead learners.
What if, research focused on Non-academic factors like empathy, relationships, risk taking...To grow Ss/ts intellectual capacity.
Must move to smArtER goals! Abandoned smart goals. Change the A to Ambitious and EVALUATE and REFLECT https://t.co/5752R5hvFE
A2. We collaboratively developed SMART goals that this year guide the work and PLC weekly data focuses. https://t.co/d6kJDmcDdz
A2: have to stick with mission/vision and make sure goals align. Do not chase all shiny objects just for the dollars
context is key. Nothing works everywhere & everything works somewhere (borrowed from ).
A2: We chose to focus on & invested in supporting this for 7 years. We reduced decisions based on the "next best thing"
A2: We keep adding on and never take off. We need more focus; there are only so many hours in the day.
A2 We are really focusing on 3-4 big things to have the biggest impact this year. As says do simple better!
Love that...eliminates "flavor of the month"
it's hard to let go of some things that feel like traditions but just aren't worth the valuable time they take up
A2 Need 2 find a balance re district initiatives as we'll be accountable for it & the needs of our school, class and individual Ss
Make sure your mission/vision are comprehensible and can be said in a sentence, then align, align, align! https://t.co/c6kD07hiHb
A2: have to stick with mission/vision and make sure goals align. Do not chase all shiny objects just for the dollars
Hard to invest when that keeps happening.
there are some great ideas for this in 's book Counting What Counts.
A2 Focusing on our new motto Every Learner Every Day and our S's need.
A2: we are focusing on engagement and hope this year. Working with students on goal setting.
Glad you are here! I am co-moderating tonight's chat with
understanding culture is a must. mindset of "the way I learned was good enough for me" may still exist https://t.co/VOe9dHaVC1
Research helps explain the 'why are we doing this?' Also important to understand your culture and Staff capacity to implement
Teaching the whole child!!!!!!! Absolutely!
A2 We have allocated more resources for our At-Risk students but increased some class sizes.
Can't keep adding to the plate, the plate is only so big. https://t.co/ffl64EnRcA
A2: We keep adding on and never take off. We need more focus; there are only so many hours in the day.
Target our efforts in the most effective way and what is best for our Ss. https://t.co/kUNK6Ht1dE
A2: We keep adding on and never take off. We need more focus; there are only so many hours in the day.
We also need educators to be honest and open about their experiences, great ideas!
A2: If it isn't aligned with our district plan, it can't be a focus. Let's get really good at a couple things and progress monitor
a2: We have been all about rigor! We have a new reading curriculum that will differentiate well too!
Love that I can tell my admins "I need to learn more about this," & we find a way to do it. Very powerful.
A2: Not enough! Usually instead of officially dismissing, we forget because there is always something new
https://t.co/DeIcd3TuQV
Tons of research out on culture and climate being of the upmost importance!
I often hear that from science and social studies at K-5 level. Reading and math focus.
How about instead of the infinite amount of "initiatives." Schools focus on creating a culture of thinking, creating, reflecting.
this is essential! Understanding the fit. Sometimes we miss how items will affect others
***Q3 is coming up in one minute!
SMART goals? Yes. SMART-ER goals? Even better! Add 'Evaluate' & 'Revise' to SMART. https://t.co/pzx9bbgvj4
A2-Hilliard has narrowed our focus to 3 main goals. I feel more focused than ever. Blended Learning-Personalization-Culture
We have a similar mantra - every student, every teacher, every day, everywhere
Aha! FOCUS! You can't get good at something without sustained focus https://t.co/4puCnJlXIJ
A2: We have reduced the number of goals for our CIP and have made a stand to keep them for the next 3-4 years!
I think this is why vet Ts get a bad wrap- sooo many initiatives and been around long enough to see them all
we seem to only focus on reading and math....it saddens me
less about big companies hand feeding us a tool n more about the kids in the seats. How do we make learning personal?
A2: First year in current district, but I know too many reduce focus of DuFour practices (at least with fidelity) for shinier toys
A2 Reduced - Idk, but we try to apprch all through lens & all staff info shared through instru stat that can be used in CR
too much of doing what everyone else does? ...YES!
Started education journey in '77-almost 40 yrs ago- just think of shifts in focus I have guided or watched. Has even 1 sustained?
Do you ever wonder why some schools don't allocate time or attention to ongoing assessment/evaluation of a decision?
Preach! 🌟🎉 https://t.co/okNQSbbAZG
A2: have to stick with mission/vision and make sure goals align. Do not chase all shiny objects just for the dollars
Having coaches in place, helping principals to identify "look-fors" , identify benchmark descriptors of Ss learning.
very true, implementation seems to always be piecemeal in and other districts.
A3: That people can articulate back to you the message, the why, and the expectations
It is only so big?! News to me (sarcasm) As a lifelong learner I get this completely!
It is only so big?! News to me (sarcasm) As a lifelong learner I get this completely!
A3-First you must live your message---if you believe it and live then you are "obsessively clear"
Integration. Reading is a HUGE part of real-world sci & ss, sci & ss can be the bulk of rdg texts
I ❤️ when we talk about organic educator learning, focus in on educator needs rather than speakers https://t.co/PVrgq4jqB6
A2 My district prioritizes initiatives that put students first. PD is organic and educator-driven. We are the lead learners.
my worry here is that we are relying on the same people due to our trust with them hoping they don't get burned out
THIS ==>
Look at how sets tone for year & prioritizes relationships. https://t.co/1KoWKhZBl2
Tons of research out on culture and climate being of the upmost importance!
or most impactful for the students we have. I prefer qualitative over quantitative.
I love that we have great coaches at -
And making sure the coaches are used appropriately!
A3: Leadership (admins, and Ts) use every opportunity to promote the message.
Which means their role has to be made obsessively clear!
A2: Not sure we have reduced as much as we have re-thought (redirected/repurposed) based on the greater picture. More intentional
A2: Would ❤️ reinvention where we tie all curric areas and student passions together. One can dream, eh? https://t.co/otYKqVocE3
we seem to only focus on reading and math....it saddens me
That has been our firat SIP goal the last 2 years
I hear a bit of in your comment. Data doesn't always mean test data and improvement isn't always academic
A3: always have that message in prominent places throughout classroom. Objectives, expectations, role models, etc...
Truth- INTENTIONAL for sure! https://t.co/eo2avOL2JV
A2: Not sure we have reduced as much as we have re-thought (redirected/repurposed) based on the greater picture. More intentional
I was just thinking that you could learn about how good communication was by reading reflections of Ts
A3 model, face to face communication, did I mention model😂 actions speak more loudly than words
A3: Do a few things really well and don't add things because they're the next big thing. PLCs, SBL
A3: You have to use common terminology and share the "why" of your message as clearly as you can.
Yup. After 24 yrs, I don't follow the swings of the edu
pendulum. Innovation amidst consistency & balance https://t.co/ppz8JBJk5J
I think this is why vet Ts get a bad wrap- sooo many initiatives and been around long enough to see them all
A3: Model for my T's and S's every day, be visible, interacting with people, communication!
A3 Communicate and walk the talk!
A3 Consistency and follow through.
Great point! We have an implementation survey to go along with every initiative. Implement several times https://t.co/aAenb5zCHJ
Do you ever wonder why some schools don't allocate time or attention to ongoing assessment/evaluation of a decision?
I was impressed with the presentation from yesterday!
PREACH! Anecdotal data is valid and we must respect it! Trs are professionals w/ prof knowledge.
A3 Breath life into the words of our vision so it doesn't become meaningless collection of words.
It is difficult to know how to best measure impact beyond using a survey or what data to look at
loved our . More so, the community embraced it. S's, T's and parents. It was career altering.
Iteration and reconnection just as important as reduction, IMHO.
https://t.co/fLoPqgc1L3
A2: Not sure we have reduced as much as we have re-thought (redirected/repurposed) based on the greater picture. More intentional
A3:Ensure non-verbals &logistical requirements match message. Message diminishes when paperwork values/commands diff priorities.
Many initiatives come/go BUT they're ALL "important and what's best for kids" until next month
agreed. Communication is such a vital part of the process. Amazing how quickly people step back when info isn't there
A3.We just had posters made- includes vision, mission, & values. In every classroom and will be included in daily announcements.
A3: lay out the map. Know where the detours are or could be! Make sure options are clear.
A3:Now that I'm on the dist level, I'm trying to communicate with principals to align my team's goals with their building goals
Good for you Robert! Have to in order to stay sane
A3 every chance you get share you vision and provide clarity about the goals and work. F2F, twitter, staff meetings, email, etc...
A3: Be a passionary 🎉🎉
Model. Mentor. Be visible! Engage! Serve staff and kids! When that is your focus: the mission takes off!
We have been using the Being with "WHY" to keep us grounded - it helps!
I believe! Can you show me the way?
A3: you ask for clarity After you send the message. Have them repeat and explain it back to you. Then revise and correct focus.
A3 Communicate to all stakeholders through a variety of means--try to reach everyone!
A3: Making sure we are precise in our language. Not everybody hears what we think we are saying.
A3: Review mission, vision, and values. Be direct. Be overt. Don't assume everyone is on the same page all the time.
We are starting to say it in the district - are we being obsessively clear?
A3: Walk the walk, make sure you're living your message as much as you're delivering your message.
A3 it's important to follow thru with your message as well as remaining consistent
A3 As the leader clear vision/message is essential & so is a team who'll tell you if you're off track
Common terminology is a must! Excellent point! https://t.co/XkV4KqX11J
A3: You have to use common terminology and share the "why" of your message as clearly as you can.
that team can bring it. Trust me, I believe in it!
A3 to be clear you need to ask the recipient what they think you are saying. Make sure it's what you are saying.
absolutely true! People respond to those positive relationships first.
A3: Keeping goals visible, watching for evidence in walkthroughs, making them the center of reflection.
Too much emphasis on collecting standardized data can derail learning that is driven by student desires
A3: Actions speak louder than words. You must know what you are talking about and show it aligning culture/climate to learning.
Teacher Collective Efficacy at 1.57.
a3: we have our values posted Everywhere! Every door, facebook, newsletters.
A3: unavoidable signage helps + teach it, preach it, and model it daily.
We also need to paraphrase back in order to ensure we heard it correctly
A3. Facilitate a continuous conversation around the message. Use your teams to monitor progress! Accountability for all staff!
A3 Consistent modeling of expectations. When you take risks, others follow. When you share failure, stigma removed.
Walk the walk.
A3: Formative feedback; high impact strategy for growth yields consistent message through a common language; sustainable efforts
BOOM! Paul knows his Effect Sizes!
A3: Eliminate vagueness, clear, consistent language, and living it. Always checking for understanding and reinforcing when needed
Where in China? Left my heart there this summer.
A2: We have added PLCs, but hopefully that means less for teachers to have to work through on their own. Collaboration saves time!
Hello ! I'm jumping on for a couple minutes...wish it could be more! This PLN rocks the Wed nights!
I am so sorry to leave, but my presence was requested at another chat and I hate to disappoint either! Have a wonderful evening!
Have to fit it to the vision of the district.
A2 I feel fortunate to say our District has not limited any initiatives as our Districts' needs keep escalating, as does our focus
A3: Sometimes leaders need to be like a broken record!
Great point! This also has to be clearly stated - things like "integrity" need to be defined!
A3: Graphically represent the message. Here is an example that goes w/ our focus on math practices https://t.co/YhChVcWFMz
Thanks for joining us tonight! Hope you can come back next week!
Surveys are good, anecdotally. But why not look at multiple measures (and numbers) to help tell a story?
Inquiry based and students choose how they show what they learned. The Ss really integrate all subjects.
Yes! That clarity is so important! Revisit, reteach, and reinforce. It is an ongoing process.
I worry about this constantly. Try to continue growing other leaders to better serve/protect evry1
Thanks for being here. We love your input
***Love the learning tonight! Remember the rule of FollowFive - follow five leaders to increase your PLN!
Modeling! Being a servant leader
Just as long as it's a good tune...:)
https://t.co/xEuvGqHynx
A3: Sometimes leaders need to be like a broken record!
***Q4 is coming up in one minute!
Prove how any initiative assists Ts in providing all Ss w/ a BALANCE of leadership, love, laughter, & learning and I'm all for it.
Better to adjust at the beginning rather than after misunderstanding later
A3: Personal conversations,
Never thought about it that way - thanks!
A3-Leaders need to model the message-whatever it is leaders need to be doing it too
Common language is key, given that even the smallest districts have multiple buildings and expectations https://t.co/2BvQdx6do6
A3: Formative feedback; high impact strategy for growth yields consistent message through a common language; sustainable efforts
Sometimes you have just sing the song in a new key.
https://t.co/deIvakZmGu
A3: Sometimes leaders need to be like a broken record!
Repeat the why also. If it's important, tell why.
Q4: Repeated Practice - How do you build in repeated opportunities for people to learn concepts deeply? https://t.co/fbUxbiEStj
We had this associate superintendent once who just kept saying the same thing ... https://t.co/4P2vej353k
A3: Sometimes leaders need to be like a broken record!
A3. Model it. Live it. Embrace it. Do so and your audience will not be mistaken of your commitment to it. https://t.co/RpIytdZy5s
or an incredible song on repeat!
Agreed! Goes back to having a clear idea of what data/ how to collect it before you even get started.
It'd be so nice if this would happen- if Ts could focus on 1-2 things instead of platter-
Personal connection is critical.
A3. Share/live your vision and connect it to the written/shared detailed plan almost obsessively.
Forgot to mention who I am. 5th grade teacher in Iowa. Graduate in May in an EDL program!
A4 Struggling w/this in my classroom. When does repetition become overdone?
A3: Use the language of the vision (the real one, not the million-word cookie-cutter statement on the webpage), ALL. THE. TIME.
A3: Take inventory of the stages of concern and ENGAGE accordingly
A3: your message (purpose, vision, mission) should live and breath in each moment of communication
When people say "we don't have time to collaborate" I say "No, we don't have time to NOT collaborate!"
A3 There's no substitute for leading and living by example.
A3 & I read about this from Evans book on Change in our Dr Program. It's called PURPOSING-keep communicating the WHY
A4: Must have time to practice, grow, adjust, personalize - its not an overnight process.
A4: just like Ss you have to meet adults where they are and grow with them using various methods and practice.
A4: Assign it for Homework. HA! Just kidding.
A3: Bam! That is the power of the team! Great minds think alike. https://t.co/fnQJtKgkej
A3: Eliminate vagueness, clear, consistent language, and living it. Always checking for understanding and reinforcing when needed
A3. You have to model and follow up or else it is meaningless
Multiple measures!! Yes! At the student, classroom, grade, school and district levels https://t.co/NdqNE7psLN
Surveys are good, anecdotally. But why not look at multiple measures (and numbers) to help tell a story?
A4 Deep learning thru curiosity, choice, creativity, challenge, collaboration, critical thinking, controversy, connections...
Coming in late. from Childersburg Middle School
starting to record our messages through our student news group and tech supports like YouTube to assist repetition
a4 You need to provide time and patience! Find ways they learn, Visual, kinesthetic repetition, etc
Patience is key! https://t.co/ZJQ8DWg6Sm
A4: Must have time to practice, grow, adjust, personalize - its not an overnight process.
A4. Connections to vision, goals at both district and building levels.
Zach Peterson, just got home from Curriculum Night, pumped to join in!
A4:When setting direction it is critical to consider platform.Opps should include f2f &virtual such as twitter or Google classroom
A4: Allow Ts opportunities to experiment, learn to get conformable with the new concepts.
A4: Connecting PD from year to year. Make point to talk about connected PD year to year. More meaningful
A4-we must stay on message-plan an implement engaging PD theat pushes Ts deeper into their learning-Admin get great at PD
A4: Embed collaboration in school day. Focus work on research best practices and have teachers work and products reflect focus.
A4: Meeting them where they are. Model, co-teach,TBT, sharing at staff meetings, cognitive coach, personalize, collaborate
Seems like a jingle or other repeated over and over sticks- can never communicate enough :) and multiple ways too
A4. We will have teacher learning communities (based on teacher planning period) that meet each month-focus on common strategies.
True - everyone is a learner operating at a different pace.
A4 Ss & Ts need a different time, place or reason to learn. Try offering the learning opportunity again for deeper learning!
A4: Clear, consistent focus and goals. Collaboration & teachers empowered to share strengths & lead https://t.co/KY3GzoUfhP
Q4: Repeated Practice - How do you build in repeated opportunities for people to learn concepts deeply? https://t.co/fbUxbiEStj
I'm just glad he liked my joke and didn't fire me!
A4: you have to be an illusionist. Present the core idea in different ways. Same way we reach Ss with different learning styles
Great book - just like all the book suggestions from our ethics class!
A4: Always with support and feedback. I always want my teachers to feel as if they can take risks and practice, even fail.
A4: Always have basic values / concepts you refer back in the classroom / your career. That breeds repetition and retention.
James from jumping in for a bit. Little one is down for the night. :)
A4: Be mindful of how you use collaborative time. Encourage Ts and admins to continue to ask questions. Cycle of Inquiry
A4: Collecting interest surveys for Ts, then differentiating for their needs and being available to assist
A4 Repeated practice needs to have feedback for learner to reach end results
Agreed-debrief and reflect on clasroom practice-Admin need to be an NON-evaluative part of this process https://t.co/AEk0wCm2HC
A4: Embed collaboration in school day. Focus work on research best practices and have teachers work and products reflect focus.
A4: modeling. Use concepts in many ways. I like to use to allow staff to watch PD videos multiple times
A4: Repeated practice is not just for students, but also our staff. They desperately need it.
A4 Ts cannot develop deep skills in pedagogy if we do everything else under the sun! Deliberate practice, focus & feedback is key
A4:This year I hope to better engage the "after the kids go to bed" learners. Many are digging in late at night often in isolation.
what's the stat? People need 30 hours for something to be embedded in practice? "Sit'n'get, hit'n'run" does not help.
A4 dig deep into knowing Ss to provide lrng opportunities that kids want to do on their lunch, at home, or any other free moment
Helping others seek first to understand! https://t.co/qDDzFnRPCc
A3: You have to use common terminology and share the "why" of your message as clearly as you can.
We are Ts safety net https://t.co/qymPvW2NUW
A4: Always with support and feedback. I always want my teachers to feel as if they can take risks and practice, even fail.
A4. Provide meaningful opportunities to experiment. Let T's know it is okay to fail but not okay to not try
Hi, all! Lisa, IC, Chicago. So late tonight, back-to-school grind😄glad to catch you all for the end of what looks like an exciting
A4: Important to recognize importance of repeated practice & growth mindset. We're not going to get it perfectly first time.
A4: recording videos for repetition. Sharing through YouTube for storage. Selfie stick has come in handy
A4-We're starting to incorporate EdChats in the classroom. Allows us to meet Ss where they are and builds collab mindset!
A4 schedule multiple times during the year to come back and revisit those key practices.
A4: P. L. C. End of story...Need to build time in to schedules if we're serious about systemic change https://t.co/zeXGuIsOcL
Q4: Repeated Practice - How do you build in repeated opportunities for people to learn concepts deeply? https://t.co/fbUxbiEStj
A4 Offer opportunities and PD credit to dive deep into a topic. Allow staff to customize PD so they want to continue to learn.
action research is that passion and bridge to personalization
A4: Intentional learning moments and built in time for staff to buy in and make it their own.
This is true, and it is powerful. https://t.co/ssufODYbdA
what's the stat? People need 30 hours for something to be embedded in practice? "Sit'n'get, hit'n'run" does not help.
I have been working on this as well! I have a Google classroom with resources, what strategies are you using?
A4: Nothing wrong with throwing previous vocab words on the current quiz. Re enforce core content this way.
Create an environment where Ts and Ss can be risk takers and you will see both soar
after being back for week two I certainly understand where you are coming from.
Thanks for being here Chad. Better late than never
A4 what we know re: student learning applies to adults & organizations -Clarity, practice, reinforcement, feedback, ownership
hey, Zach! Hope curriculum night went well!
great point, Josh! Can't be one and done. Not in today's world of education. Find purpose, believe in it.
***Q5 is coming up in one minute!
A4 A quick Google Survey can save pain & suffering from doing PD wrong; again! Learn what learners want to learn & give that PD
A4 keep the focus narrow. Find and offer options for PD. Ts need time to explore and learn about it before jumping in.
Thanks for being here Lisa. We always love your input
haha! I haven't even started. My kids did:)
A4: Build capacity of others through instructional walks, and varied learning PLCs such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. connections
thanks Lisa! It was awesome! Love our school! releasing a blog tonight! 🤗
This is an important challenge. Keeping a consistent message and movement that also allows for Ts choice and voice.
Agree. I advocate for teacher voice, choice, and differentiated learning experiences.
Just observing tonight but is on 🔥! Great conversation!
A4: It's amazing how quickly you can get to deep thinking when you ask a student to diagram what they know.
if as a P I expect grt things in CR, then I shld hv same expectations of myself regarding PD-no excuse 4anything less
Fastest way for me to learn is SEE it in action-but no one around to model- have to learn on my own/youtube if lucky
so true about that growth mindset. We need to practice, learn from our mistakes, and then improve.
this doesn't have to be a spectator sport!
I'm glad to see you bring up growth mindset - it's a good reminder that we need to think differently https://t.co/BbmfMfaDzo
A4: Important to recognize importance of repeated practice & growth mindset. We're not going to get it perfectly first time.
You got it! Jump in and learn right along with the Ts. And, it's fun! https://t.co/tyXk1Uept5
if as a P I expect grt things in CR, then I shld hv same expectations of myself regarding PD-no excuse 4anything less
Too bad you couldn't get it done to release it on - gotta learn from https://t.co/vSlz6FNH0I
thanks Lisa! It was awesome! Love our school! releasing a blog tonight! 🤗
a5 Surveys, data analysis, walkthroughs, and feedback
same here. One entering 9th and one entering 6th. High school is a whole new world! So much homework
I think this is a good explicit way of starting conversations in why PLC ?1 is so important. Build student efficacy.
gotta walk through coach discuss lead listen reboot walk through again.
A5. Evaluation must be part of the goal! Who does it, when, how. Team members hold each other accountable!
A5. We are incorporating quarterly data dinner meetings so we can closely monitor progress and make necessary adjustments for S's.
is now trending in USA, ranking 39
A5: the data from the "measured" needs shared, discussed, debated, tested, and applied to the needs of the vision.
Agreed. Also saw Ss take chances & smile while doing it. Rare these days. Freshmen no less
A4.1: use of programs like EdPuzzle can assist with attentiveness
I prefer to think of this as "what gets monitored gets healthier."
A5 True accountability & responsibility come from integrity, autonomy, self-reflection, & passion, not external monitoring.
A5: Be direct... Tell them what's important here... Explain the purpose, they'll go with it... https://t.co/y3FELKiecj
A5: Data, multiple data avenues (ex. ACT, AIR, PSAT, STARS) to see if our efforts are working.
A5 Must monitor "vital behaviors" of practices & initiatives with surveys & observations. Only way to ensure deep implementation
A5 I'm not sure how to do this.
I was in classrooms today and two 2nd grade teachers were working with their students on that concept. Was really cool
A5: systematic pre-planned school wide observations to ensure the plan actually Reaches Ss
A1) Need to read, review, and reflect upon research. Truly understand. Don't turn into buzzwords
A5: You gotta be building relationships. Don't have a gotcha system but one built on trust and face to face communication.
A5. We are starting weekly data meetings to hold T,s and S's and admin accountable for learning.
I agree with the notion that we need to be direct!
A5: If we measure what we value, then we should value what we measure.
Seems trite to say we look at STAR data & F & P levels.. there has be Ts, heart & grit behind to get the growth done!
A2) Need to know and understand the research, what it truly means, and how it will look at your site / w your school
We treat our data as a FA Use it to drive instruction. Sometimes it's painful but ALWAYS beneficial when Ts remember why we r here
A5-set small check points along the way-monitor progress as you go-allow yourself to make changes along the way
We don't need you to chime in, Craig!
A5: Relationships is key, be direct, data, communication of expectations, monitor progress.
YES! Motivation is about autonomy, purpose, and mastery MUST watch! https://t.co/3PTcw3ALWf https://t.co/jxqAiwW7rV
A5 True accountability & responsibility come from integrity, autonomy, self-reflection, & passion, not external monitoring.
A5: As a leader, if you don't find it important, others won't either.
A5 oh and reflection. Lots of reflection and debriefing.
A5 Be sure to pull students into the process of monitoring and reflection.
Ditto here...plus state assessment https://t.co/EFcLvRAsLH
Seems trite to say we look at STAR data & F & P levels.. there has be Ts, heart & grit behind to get the growth done!
Sounds so much better than "what gets tested gets taught" but is it different? Monitor the right stuff https://t.co/5oTZFCXXOO
I prefer to think of this as "what gets monitored gets healthier."
Power is in the collaboration. TS need to bring S ex to table and discuss and game plan
Data driven instruction must be accompanied by admin walk throughs and coaching conversations
epic . But, it is more than just 3 days. It is about the next 180. There is a plan for that too!
A2) Come up w schoolwide definitions & descriptions & make sure they are understood, applicable, & agreed upon
. Benchmarks and iteration along the way helps to keep things real.
https://t.co/RWfgDvFMhP
A5-set small check points along the way-monitor progress as you go-allow yourself to make changes along the way
A5: Certainly looking at data, sharing results. Also using data to plan next steps. PD on all these steps, too.
Clear expectations. Strong teacher, building, and district teams, and keep the conversation about accountability alive!
A5 several ways - bench marking data review days, conversations with Ts, being in classrooms on a regular basis
A5 Probably a way too simple answer, but observations, observations, observations
A5 strategic planning should set forth the goals for improvement. Do they accomplish it or kick the can down the road?
A5: metrics need to be understood before implementation. Don't create the rules while in motion
A5 We develop rubrics 4 every initiative & Ts self monitored & teams self assessed 4 coaching & feedback. Email me & I'll share.
A5:Collaboratively teachers align to 4 PLC ?s and produce products demonstrating alignment. Working on the work.Survey for T needs.
A5: Transparency of practice and willingness to observe, collab, have tough convos...don't overthink it https://t.co/Zn04DbWa83
It was Vroomy. It was too easy. I told ZP he learned from the best on creating quotes
Okay, , fading fast. Those 5:30 gym meetings are wearing me down. See you next week!
He just needs help on background images
A5: First knowing the goal and cultivating an environment where others help achieve it.
A3) Come up w schoolwide definitions & descriptions & make sure they are understood, applicable, & agreed upon
A5: accountability is a tough balancing act - we want passionate teaching and learning, not crossing it off the "done" list.
Willingness to "confront with care." We must kindly hold each other accountable & keep ourselves focused.
Agreed & well-said. Adding a to-do/by who/when list 2 PLC minutes can help. "Why" is stated in the notes. https://t.co/WDOaoXNarG
A5. Evaluation must be part of the goal! Who does it, when, how. Team members hold each other accountable!
A5: Shared accountability. We have to hold each other accountable for taking action. Set times/tools for sharing progress/Qs
Not too simple. I totally agree with that! We should be seeing the changes in the classrooms and with our students
Also how that data matches--or doesn't--what I see in daily classroom work.
***Q6 is coming up in one minute!
Great phrase: Willingness to "confront with care"
Thanks
https://t.co/VWi0SJQgue
Willingness to "confront with care." We must kindly hold each other accountable & keep ourselves focused.
Cultivating an environment is one thing, others helping is another I believe https://t.co/nXJbK7M9ht
A5: First knowing the goal and cultivating an environment where others help achieve it.
A4) Always ask what's next, where are they going w the experience, or what is the ultimate outcome?
A5 need to be clear on what to measure from the beginning. Helps with the entire journey.
Q6: What is one thing you will do immediately based on the learning which occurred tonight? https://t.co/yi3iLOY2KO
WOW! Thanks! Can't wait to check them out!
A5: We prioritize those things we value. If we don't make it important the Ts won't either, and the Ss certainly won't
You have to! Free for 15 min. got me hooked on it
Ss work is evidence of lrng & teaching!
A6 Reflect, reflect, reflect!!
Hey we are trending behind Trump, Clinton, Lochte, & ECOT! Go figure!
Please follow a few tweeps on our to grow your tonight! Follow 5, as a rule!
A6 Follow passionate educators!
It's not what we say, but how we say it.
Q4: I try to pair new ideas/texts with previous so there is a constant cycling back around while still exposing to new.
A6: Plan on meeting with our administrators to determine if we made the district goals obsessively clear and then support them!
A6: Check out the FIP thingy. Thanks,
Ouch! At least we accomplished something positive this hour compared to others!
A6 Follow all the great educators that participated in tonight's chat! Super job everyone!
A6 continue to work on providing clarity for Ts. Check for understanding through those F2F conversations.
A6 Seek greater clarity in communication. Develop personal benchmarks to make sure focus has maintained momentum.
Thanks for being here, Bobby!
and, we will work to hold each other accountable to this.
A6: Continue to advocate for research-based practices and facilitate PLC work and alignment to learning with schools.
A6: Look up more info on OIP, consider asking T at field placement what goals they have for the school.
A6: Add the "ER" to my SMART goals! Thanks,
A6: Find opportunities (in/out district) that support efforts to close gap data with Ss w/ disabilities.
I agree. Some of my best work is on there
A6. Reflect. Continue to support my staff to develop meaningful, engaging, impactful lessons.
A6. Connectedness- fewer bldg goals, connections between vision and goals, all drives PD w/monthly progress checks.
YES! OIP will help to provide focus!
A6: Set up time regularly--weekly?--to review & reflect on progress toward goals. Challenge peers to do same. Share.
Do you do that now as year starts or later after ppl settle in? Keep bringing it up in other mtgs too? (Learning)
Try and keep our overarching vision and purpose at the forefront of every single conversation
A6: We should all continue to search for people who push our thinking and challenge our ideas. Thanks
One of my favorite tweets of all time ! Thanks ! Let me know if I can help. https://t.co/Lxtb8jAMOI
A6: Check out the FIP thingy. Thanks,
Must be mindful that culture looks different at different districts. There is no one magic bullet or potion.
A6 Revisit my extremely well-read copy of Focus-has frequently served as a compass 4 me. & make sure my message is clear to all
Q6 Some staff choose to read Focus for this school year, these convos will add to our discussions around the book.
A6: Stay the course, monitor, reflect, get feedback, adjust. Follow through:)
Thanks - back to work for me.
A6: Process and set goals. Thought provoking chat. Recommit to measuring the success of what we do and adjusting when needed.
A6: Making a Google Docs to share w/ k-12 vertical content teams to use to share out actions, Qs throughout year
A6: start a Pinterest page for my teachers! Thanks for the idea !
I'm going to make it on-going.
Thanks for jumping in, Dave!
I love the "obsessively clear" I'm an instructional coach doing my admin internship. I'm stealing this 4 my future!
Thanks for being here. Come back next week
A6: Find out what the best districts are practicing and pick their brains
We didn't make the trending list - too much craziness around
That was from Mike Schmoker - not me - wish I could say I coined it!
Yes! Don't forget to celebrate your successes along the way!
Continue to keep focused on our goals---be "obsessively clear"!
Thanks to and for a great tonight!
Thanks . Great to connect and learn from you tonight b
Instead of "steal" we call it "borrowing the brilliance" There were a lot of key phrases tonight!
I'm finally learning the value of google docs and forms! Great tools for collaborating and gathering feedback!
I'm just happy Bobby is following his driver on Twitter finally...
A5) Collaborative coaching cycles. Posting good questions from academic standards. Authentic common assessments
A6: I am going to share these questions with my district leadership team and PL committee; engage in a book study on Focus
I will take this deeper: find out what the best Ts in my building are doing pick their brains - top 10% https://t.co/1kl9uwUJTP
A6: Find out what the best districts are practicing and pick their brains
A6 use data to see deficits, but also remember that those numbers are kids and stay focused on helping the kids
Huge thanks to from for co-moderating with me tonight!
A6: continue walk-talks. Make sure the message is understood
A5: I've scheduled an after school time per month for teachers to collaborate vertically to support our new reading framework.
A6 stay focused on the goals. Don't let the distractions get things off course
Thank you for some thought-provoking questions tonight. Love how pushes me to grow.
We have amazing resources in all of our schools. Use them! https://t.co/wbnp2lc4ED

A5) Do a comprehensive needs assessment - school improvement survey, PD needs assessment, parent inv survey Feedback!
Thanks to you and for moderating tonight!
Love my educator friends from the south. Thanks for a great chat as always!
I like using Google Slides as collaborative white boards. You can add text, pics, video & arrange any way you want
A6: I will not get "too busy" to learn from my PLN. has again proven how much value there is in learning from others.
Thanks for a great hour of connecting and learning
for sure! Love that you keep coming back and pushing US!
Yes. Talk w/ as many Ts as we can each day. Share the vision. Problem solve & celebrate together.
Thank you everyone for allowing me to help moderate tonight! And another shout out to for bringing me along!
