Welcome to #flipclass chat tonight! Please introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping and if you had to go to the store and buy valentines as a student what type would you buy (you can shift time so that your favorites of all-time are available)?
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:03 PM EST
Tonight we’re talking about the #flipclass pace. How do you determine the appropriate pace? How do you know when to move on? How do you structure your time? Etc. #flipclasschat

  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:09 PM EST
Hi #flipclass friends, Katie from Allen TX. 6+ yrs of flipping HS physics, PD, and now some college physics. I really like the silly pun valentines, or Snoopy.
  • martharamirezco Feb 12 @ 8:09 PM EST
#flipclass Hi, I'm Martha from Colombia. Have flipped for 5 years and teach English to HEd students. There's no valentine's in Colombia. :(
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:09 PM EST
More and better interaction w/ S. I talk to whole class maybe 5-10 mins out of 90 min #flipclass

I'm really interested in flipped classrooms. But, I'm a bit intimated by it. How do you start a flipped classroom? #flipclass #eci201
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:10 PM EST
Here's our warm up question. Q0. We us q1/A1 format to help keep up with the conversation. Be sure to include #flipclass, and if you can remember #flipclasschat.
  • EJFullertonEdu Feb 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
Hi everyone! Eric from Ontario, Canada. Flipped math starting in 2014. #flipclass
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:11 PM EST
A0- I think that the benefit would be the flexibility that students have when they are able to do some work on there own as well as in the classroom. #flipclass #eci201
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
Aaaaah! Another Canadian!!! Welcome, fellow Canuck :D! Where in ON are you? #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @EJFullertonEdu
  • MandyPThompson Feb 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
A0: I think the biggest benefit is that more class time can be geared towards any questions the students have and allow for more individualized learning. #eci201 #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
A0 I really liked the conversion of class time to active learning, students participating and controlling, from sitting and listening to lecture #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:13 PM EST
A0: For me, the biggest upside is the increased conversations with students. I'm able to answer more of my students questions in class while they're working on the "hard stuff" (formerly the homework) #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • EJFullertonEdu Feb 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
A0 - I enjoy the amount of time it frees-up in the class to investigate and explore on a much deeper and richer level. We can explore the WHY and not just the way. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:14 PM EST
Q1 What determines the pace/schedule of your #flipclass? If students self-pace how do you help them monitor/maintain their own pace? #flipclasschat
  • kirk_humphreys Feb 12 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1: Students determine their pace. I give them everything that needs to be done by a certain date. They self pace and self monitor themselves as I check daily and have conversations with each where they are at. #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:18 PM EST
A1: I'm not fully self-paced. I set a date for the test and a checklist of things to accomplish, but then let students pace themselves up to that date. I try to check in with students daily to see where they're at. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • meganmobley_21 Feb 12 @ 8:18 PM EST
A1: The pace is partially determined by the students' level of understanding prior to class time and how many questions they have. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:18 PM EST
Quick thanks to @matthew_t_moore who gave us tonight's questions. Please add your ideas to https://t.co/OWqXRZNFm7 #flipclass
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:18 PM EST
A1- I thin you have to make sure that you set mini deadlines for the class. That way you can monitor their activity. #flipclasschat #flipclass #eci201
  • MandyPThompson Feb 12 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1: Try to keep track of the learning goals in the class and set deadlines on when those need to be met by. But try to be a bit flexible if the students are really struggling on a topic. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1: I am slowly trying to go to self pace. I know I'll get there when we go 1:1. #flipclass
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:19 PM EST
I think you have to make sure that you set mini deadlines for the class. That way you can monitor their activity. #flipclasschat #flipclass #eci201
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1 currently I pace it, just trying to keep motoring along, but I am going to try to experiment with one mastery-type unit this semester in one of my courses. I am always willing to answer S qns on whatever previous material they need help with though #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:20 PM EST
A1 my HS physics was flexible between unit tests. College is different w/team based learning. Ss have to be ready for class to be effective. Still flexible w/independent work. #flipclass
  • EJFullertonEdu Feb 12 @ 8:21 PM EST
@flippingwithjoy Thanks for the welcome! I am in Parry Sound, where are you? #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:21 PM EST
Ooh! Keep us posted on your mastery unit! #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @flippingwithjoy
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:21 PM EST
A1 pt 2: I'm not sure if I'll ever be fully self-paced... we shuffle students around at semester, so I feel like we all need to be in the same spot when we switch #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:22 PM EST
Q2 In your #flipclass are students given all materials at the beginning of the year? Chunks at a time? Or “Just-in-time” delivery? #flipclasschat
  • meganmobley_21 Feb 12 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: I plan on giving information in chunks at a time according to the amount of time and material that needs to be covered per unit. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2- I plan on giving them chunks of time to get work done and different mini deadline. That way not to much would pile up on them and it is a reasonable amount of work. #flipclasschat #flipclass #eci201
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: I switched to a unit checklist this semester. This has saved S who missed days w/ flu #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2 I'm really just in time, mostly because it's a new course level for me. (I'm about 10 minutes ahead of the Ss) #flipclass
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2- I plan on giving them chunks of time to get work done and give them different mini deadline. That way not to much work would pile up on them. #flipclasschat #flipclass #eci201
  • MandyPThompson Feb 12 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: I still have a couple years until I'm in the classroom teaching but I plan on giving out all the materials for a chapter/unit at a time. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • martharamirezco Feb 12 @ 8:25 PM EST
A0 For me the greatest benefit is time! #Flipping has allowed me to do so many things and connect to Ss thanks to more time! #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2+ everything is available in LMS for Ss as soon as possible. #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • EJFullertonEdu Feb 12 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2- In my grade 8 math class I provide the materials as “just in time” delivery, but would like to try providing chunks based on the unit we are studying. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2 I'm still a work in progress so um, they get the stuff when it's ready :D #flipclass
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:26 PM EST
When it's a new prep, I am always just in time delivery #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:27 PM EST
A2: All of my stuff is posted on youtube, so the material is all out there. But the checklists I give out just cover one "unit" at a time. Theoretically, a student could work ahead if they truly wanted to #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:27 PM EST
Thanks! I feel better! It's been a while since I've had a new prep. #flipclass. College pacing is crazy fast!
    In reply to @cjcrawcooper
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:29 PM EST
Q3 Given free choice, what percent of students would (do) work ahead? What percent would fall behind? What percent can’t conceive of either and have a trained dependency on you? #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:29 PM EST
Same here. When I flip a new class I'd be lucky if I was more than a day ahead of the students. #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue, @cjcrawcooper
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3: my honors S are so loaded w/ work in their AP and Eng. class that they don't have time #flipclass
  • kirk_humphreys Feb 12 @ 8:32 PM EST
A2: I loop with my students over 3 years. I give my students all standards and materials for all 3 years I have them so they can move ahead if they want. I have two 7th graders in Algebra who have already started Geometry as they finished the year. #flipclass
  • dprindle Feb 12 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: Dave from MI jumping in. Here are my very recent numbers. Early 6% On time 60% Late 34% #flipclass
  • martharamirezco Feb 12 @ 8:33 PM EST
A2 #flipclass Depends on the class. Some receive chunks, but I try 2 adjust 2 the groups & Ss' feedback. I do my best 4 "just in time" teach
  • SraWitten Feb 12 @ 8:33 PM EST
A3-Lpts talk about working ahead but very few do. Sometimes athletes that know they will miss class #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:33 PM EST
HS Ss who haven't had the freedom to self-pace struggle to believe it's really up to them. It takes some training, trust, and prodding to get everyone going. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:34 PM EST
Nice to see you tonight! Hope you are doing well. #flipclass
    In reply to @dprindle
  • SraWitten Feb 12 @ 8:34 PM EST
Easier said than done sometimes. Also sometimes there is a reason for a specific order or work which can get lost if they have everything #flipclass
    In reply to @MandyPThompson
  • dprindle Feb 12 @ 8:35 PM EST
Lost my voice today. A cold that won't let go. Benefit of flipping. I don't have to talk if I don't need to. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • kirk_humphreys Feb 12 @ 8:35 PM EST
A3: About half my students work ahead while 1 or 2 work a day or so behind the pace of the class. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:35 PM EST
A3 + Next time I teach this course Ss will be able to move ahead. Behind will be a problem since we rely on team challenges and discussions during #flipclass
  • SraWitten Feb 12 @ 8:36 PM EST
Yes! I get so many students new to #flipclass that say “what should I do now!?”
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:37 PM EST
A3 I can't answer this one from experience, though I haven't allowed Ss to fall behind in watching if they attend class - if they didn't watch the video before class, they're watching it in class #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:39 PM EST
Q4 Given snow days, heat days, emergency days, mass field trip days, and other interruptions of your #flipclass how does your structure and pacing account for interruption? #flipclasschat
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:39 PM EST
A3: pt2. A few S work ahead in class. I have more flu S than usual, so more are behind than usual #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:40 PM EST
A3: At any given time, I would say I've got about 5% working ahead, 70% on pace, and 25% 1 or more days behind #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • meganmobley_21 Feb 12 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4: Since students have the ability to watch lessons at home it is easier to stay on track! #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4- I think that having the flip classroom would help in this situation since they will be able to have some of their work at home and hopefully not fall to far behind. #flipclasschat #flipclass #eci201
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4 I don't like the lessons to proceed too far without in-class consolidation/check-up, so depending on how many Ss are involved in those interruptions they may end up interrupted the same way as as a more traditional classroom #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • MandyPThompson Feb 12 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: In my experience as a student, schools were really good about changing schedules quickly due to the amount of interruptions. Usually teachers gave extra videos or assignments to do to keep on track. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:43 PM EST
I hadn't thought about the value of the in class check in. Definitely important before moving too far on in most courses. #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @flippingwithjoy
  • SraWitten Feb 12 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4- Modify and go! I usually factor in at least one snow day per unit at this time of year. #itsnowsindenver #onlyinthespring #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Feb 12 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: Since all the material is posted on youtube, absences have become much less of an issue. Students can still access the material even when they arent physically in class. They know when the test is going to be, get through the material before that day #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:43 PM EST
Except: Snow and hurricanes knocked out internet and power in Charleston this year. S can't always get video #flipclass
    In reply to @meganmobley_21
  • EJFullertonEdu Feb 12 @ 8:45 PM EST
Agreed! Snow days don’t have to be lost learning days because students can watch the YouTube lesson videos that I post. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:45 PM EST
A4 Lessons can continue for a day. Better than nothing, but still have to do some catching up for those who didn't do the work at home. #flipclass
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:45 PM EST
That would be an issue! Guess that's an argument for "flipping isn't always about videos" XD! #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @cjcrawcooper, @meganmobley_21
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:46 PM EST
Makes it hard to assign work and penalize if not done. Assign and hope works though. #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @cjcrawcooper, @meganmobley_21
  • kirk_humphreys Feb 12 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4: there is no interruption with the flipped classroom. If I am absent, the students continue on without me. Very little to prepare for the sub. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:48 PM EST
Big + for #flipclass. I know what and how lessons are being delivered even if I'm somewhere else. #flipclasschat
    In reply to @kirk_humphreys
  • cjcrawcooper Feb 12 @ 8:48 PM EST
Benefit of flipped and flexible pacing is that S could get caught up at school #flipclass

I had teachers assign videos and then would give us pop quizzes when we got back to check if actually watched them. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201

We had CD's in our school library with unit videos on them. Ss could check them out and play them in game stations if they didn't have computers. #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @EJFullertonEdu
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:51 PM EST
I think a lot of people turn to EDpuzzle, Google forms or other such systems to help with that #flipclass #flipclasschat

Here's Q5 How large a role does student choice and student determination play in your #flipclass pace? #flipclasschat
  • meganmobley_21 Feb 12 @ 8:53 PM EST
A5: If they decide not to complete assignments outside of class in order to be prepared for class time, they will fall behind. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:53 PM EST
I keep this in mind as an option and have heard of others doing it but it hasn't been an issue for me yet #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @EJFullertonEdu
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:53 PM EST
A4- I think that Ss determination is a huge part in this! If the Ss aren’t motivated and aren’t determinate, then they might not do as well in this setting. #flipclasschat #flipclass #eci201
  • MandyPThompson Feb 12 @ 8:54 PM EST
A5: Student choice plays a large role, students have to do work on their own time and stay on track to avoid falling behind. But this helps prepare students for college, when majority of learning is outside of the classroom. #flipclass #flipclasschat #eci201
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:54 PM EST

    A5: I need to be better w/this #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 12 @ 8:55 PM EST
A5 Teaching adults is different. Reality drives their pacing. Work all day, school at night, kids at home. Big challenges so time can really be limited. #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 12 @ 8:56 PM EST
A5 so far it doesn't. Probably an area where I need to grow. how do Ss do active learning together to practice a topic if they're all at different places -- do you just make the active learning component a middle-of-the-road pace? #flipclass #flipclasschat
  • mcgibbo3 Feb 12 @ 8:57 PM EST
