A2: great teachers build relationships with parents naturally. They have pride for and care about their students, they understand family dynamics and they communicate. #engagechat
Agree. I've learned to type fast. Copy/paste. I put comments in the grade book next to each grade so everyone understands why it is what it is. #engagechat
I have about 400 Ss as a specialist science T so I rely on our digital portfolio @Seesaw to connect & communicate with Ps... I am slowly getting to know many of them but it’s hard to know all of them in person! #engagechat
In reply to
@tolbertplant, @LaneWalker2, @SPEDirectorBISD, @Seesaw
Agreed! Especially the positive messages home! I had a 4th grader who I really had a great time with and he asked me if I would talk to Gmother. I was happy to do it. GMom was pleased and kid was beaming! #engagechat
Oh you'll dig it! You can use it to communicate with Ps, get their ideas, or use it as an answering machine if they need to get it...so many uses #flipgridfever#engagechat

Yes! I keep a website & publish pics of the Ss working once a week. Every Friday it's ready for parents to view to see their children in action. They love it! I also include text explaining the activities in the photos. #engagechat
A3: By constantly sharing & being engaged with fellow teachers. It’s so easy to stay holed up in your room. Get out, visit, and share the positive. #engagechat
We publish a parent engagement calendar at the beginning of the year. This list all possible events that parents can be involved in throughout the year, has increased parent engagement #engagechat
A3: When Ts see a need or a gap that needs to be filled, be proactive and create a plan. Don't wait for someone else. Take the reigns. Admin should encourage this. #engagechat
First off, know each Ss by name in your classes. Be a positive light in those hallways, and be fair to all. Be there for all of the Ss, not just the ones in your classes. Create a welcoming culture. #engagechat
A2: I send an email at the beginning of the yr asking Ps to share 5 unique facts about their child. I ask them to leave the Ss name out of it. I then read them aloud, and we try to guess who it is. Starts the yr on a positive for Ps and Ss. https://t.co/WN2oqn4GC4#EngageChat
A3: Volunteering for committees is usually expected in schools. So I would look for people going above and beyond - offering to start a book club, organize a new committee, connecting with all parents, supporting teachers. #engagechat
A4) Be solution oriented; stay positive; encourage others; promote a growth mindset; invite others into your room; share ideas but be humble & learn from others as well. #engagechat
A3: Teachers can demonstrate leadership in a school by finding a gap (instructional, procedures, etc) and then working with others to find a way to fill the gap. #engagechat
A3 By guiding them and helping them make good decisions. This takes leadership. And when they make a bad decision, a leader helps the student go through a recovery process to help Ss make better decisions next time. #engagechat
A3 Leadership can be formal or informal. Leadership can include "unofficial" mentoring, Team Leaders, committee membership, book talk s, connecting with community #engagechat
A3) Checking in late, love the topic!
Servant leadership-when my Ts do things outside their job description, or with kids they don't teach--great leadership and culture-builder!
#engagechat
A3: being willing to have an open classroom to welcome other Ts in to share successes (or failures), sharing new ideas openly, supporting others to improve & learn together #engagechat
The dreaded teacher lounge. Who's willing to be vocal in support of Ss when Ts talk negative about them? Tough question - but who's defending our Ss. Who's their rock? #engagechat
Isn’t it cool? Blogs are super simple to update too. I haven’t used remind 101. I was going to but I found success with just my blog. My principal used it and it was super helpful. #engagechat
A3: Lead by example
Talk less, listen more
Find an areas you can lead
Share new ideas
Don't play favorites
Do your fair share
Be yourself
Take responsibility
Develop your leadership chops.
#engagechat
A3: Be confident and take the initiative to do something “crazy” (aka new 😉)- example: I’m having students make videos in class for an assignment with a new app we’ve never tried before! Excited to take the leap! #engagechat
A3. Teachers are leaders. It’s more about making their leadership visible. Collaborate. Celebrate. Innovate. Tweet.
Teachers are lead learners in their classroom and school. Make their professional learning visible. Don’t be shy. Share and learn together. #engagechat
A3: Walking the walk rather than just talking to talk...Also, consciously staying away from negativity and staying solution oriented rather than complaining with no suggestions. #engagechat
A3 Marian from Atlanta joining late. By not being afraid to speak up. Voiced opinions today at PTO about translating the documents they provide & providing resources for all students instead of charging a fee for profit. #engagechat
#engagechat Be the change. Spread positivity. Walk the halls and smile. Greet people with a joyful demeanor and listen. Embrace optimism and innovate, stay growth oriented and support your colleagues.
A3: Teacher leadership is key! Leading PD, leading teams around grade level concerns or developing cross-curricular projects, developing ideas for school improvement, leading learners to help as partners with school improvement as well #engagechat
A3. Being there for the new comers ..not taking takes here and there, keeping to one's own affairs and displaying the right motivation..being There for the peers .. #EngageChat
A3 take charge of simple things. Lead and plan schoolwide or grade level activities. Collaborate, share, and collaborate some more. TAKE RISKS!! #engagechat
a3 We can't lead if we don't understand where we are headed. It is imp to read EdWk, ASCD, etc. lest we feel like admins are psychotics w/top-down initiatives #engagechat
A3: The possibilities are endless! Lead PD (we can learn SO MUCH from each other), plan events for your class and invite everyone, chair a committee, share ideas & lessons, try new things... I'm all about leading by doing! #engagechat
A3: The focus of leadership is to build up others - increase their capacity. Teacher leaders constantly seek to collaborate with their colleagues to facilitate student growth, improve school culture, increase teacher-peer knowledge, and increase professional learning #engagechat
Q3 - #engagechat Share your strengths, and you will quickly become the school’s “go to” person for a strategy, or tech wizard, family literacy event organizer, etc. Take the initiative! Offer solutions to existing challenges!
A3: Teacher leadership is key! Leading PD, leading teams around grade level concerns or developing cross-curricular projects, developing ideas for school improvement, leading learners to help as partners with school improvement as well #engagechat
A3 teachers are already leaders, they see what needs done and lead programs. Make decisions that are good for the students and the campus. Model best practices and help your peers #EngageChat
A3 By speaking up against the negative and being relational...too many Ts are isolated in their “kingdoms”...break out connect and be part of a community...don’t miss it! #engagechat
As a digital tech. lead teacher I invite other Ts to learn with me (we have been doing a great online course MOOC together recently) - important to not always be the one with all the answers... #engagechat
A3 Also, to speaking truth with students about current events, sharing with fellow educators about how to do the same, pushing admin to invest in training in courageous conversations. #engagechat
A3: Leadership begins and ends with consistent performance. Teachers &admins can’t lead w/o sound pedagogy. There are too many district identified leaders in EDU that have not performed in the classroom. This ultimately hurts Ss and learning environments. #engagechat
The solution oriented piece is key, Audrey. Focusing on approaches to get things done is a necessity, as we all seek to grow as a team to support our Ss #engagechat
Love it! It's actually very fast. Before I started doing it I imagined it would be a HUGE task to undertake. Not so. I take pictures directly into Google Drive, & from there quickly upload into my Google Site. It's fast & easy & the parents LOVE it! #engagechat
I teach science to all our Ss in years 1 to 6 so only have them for one hour a week. Relationship building is key! And remembering everyone’s names ☺️#engagechat

A3. Leadership in being front and center when goals are being discussed and written - your name attached as responsible for some of the objectives along with your PLC members - checking for assessment of the ongoing goals #engagechat
A3: Be a role model for your Ss in all areas of life. Show them how to be kind, respectful, dedicated, and resilient. In my opinion, that’s the best way to be a leader. #EngageChat
Can you say more about that? I'm just suspicious when I see @Flipgrid that someone is trying to market for them. It's why I haven't spent much time investigating Flipgrid. #engagechat

A3.BEING THERE...not only for the new comers but the rest of the peers , be smiling and open minded, be willing to adapt to change and set an example for the same , extended help to one and all ..do not give unsolicited advice and not take tales from here to there. #EngageChat
A3 Also, to speaking truth with students about current events, sharing with fellow educators about how to do the same, pushing admin to invest in training in courageous conversations. #engagechat
A3. Teachers lead learning within their classrooms. They can support other teachers, model innovation, differentiate learning, empower student voice. You don’t need a formal leadership title to be a leader. #engagechat
A3: Be a role model for your Ss in all areas of life. Show them how to be kind, respectful, dedicated, and resilient. In my opinion, that’s the best way to be a leader. #EngageChat
A3 #engagechat Leadership often permeates from the bottom up-in well-organized, managed rooms. Where learning is occuring and students and parents are happy. The limelight often passes them over, but their leadership leaves a mark #engagechat
A3.BEING THERE...not only for the new comers but the rest of the peers , be smiling and open minded, be willing to adapt to change and set an example for the same , extended help to one and all ..do not give unsolicited advice and not take tales from here to there. #EngageChat
It’s not enough time IMO but I try to make lessons really hands on & engaging and attempt to get science literacy going in their class (reading/writing on our topics etc.) - not perfect but they do love science, so that’s a start #engagechat

A3 being a role model to Pre Service Teacher's like myself and encouraging and providing constructive and posotive feedback. Building relationships with new educators and making them feel welcome #engagechat
A2. You need to build relationships from the beginning. Do not only communicate when things are challenging. Meet every parent. Get to know their children, your students, & family life. Meet them at their place. Incorporate parents into class. Create a partnership. #engagechat
A4). Emphasis on being proactive v reactive. Considering what behavior is trying to communicate. Empathize w/out sympathizing (which can lower expectations.) consistent routines & procedures. Directing teaching social emotional skills. #EngageChat
#engagechat Student-Centered classroom: flexible seating, Socratic seminars, debates, podcasting & blogging- student choice, authentic, active learning activities that are both student designed & led. Freedom, independence and trust = engagement, growth and self-advocacy
A4. Keep students interested. Have students take the lead and facilitate their learning. When students are engaged and agents of their own learning, classroom management turns into mutual engagement. Sharing a common goal. Learning. #engagechat
A4 use a lot of collaborative work from your students. Lots of engaging and fun activities. Working in teams respecting others and help the students to develop positive leadership outside and inside the school. #engagechat
A4. Build relationships. When you know your kids, you will understand their actions. Talk with them, involve them into classroom decisions. Use student voice & choice, this limits disruptions. Personalize learning. When learning is adapted; you are engaged. #engagechat
#A4). Emphasis on being proactive v reactive. Considering what behavior is trying to communicate. Empathize w/out sympathizing (which can lower expectations.) consistent routines & procedures. Directly teaching social emotional skills. #EngageChat
A4 I don't think Ss should be managed, but rather engaged. And that happens when they trust their Ts with their stories of who they are. Being trustworthy involves being interested enough to get to know they real them. #engagechat
A4: Consistency in expectations. That is key. What you say, you must do. Building relationships with kids is also key. And creating clear expectations. #engagechat
A4 - #engagechat Knowing your students, building trust and respectful relationships, setting clear expectations and procedures, having backup plans when lessons/activities are not working, know your areas of refinement.
A4) Consistent schedule & routines; silent signals; student centered activities & learning; student choice & autonomy (if they can make choices, then Ts don't need to hold their hand & Ss begin to manage themselves). #engagechat
A4: Well, I’m a kinder teacher at heart...so, I sing all my directions about classroom routines with silly made-up songs to familiar tunes. The kids love it so much and they start to sing along and just do what we are singing naturally. I know...so Kinder!! #EngageChat
A4 Great teachers leave no doubt who is in charge while encouraging students to question, explore and learn outside the shackles of rigid lesson plans. #EngageChat
A4: Great Ts also look at learning as an active activity, not a passive one. The greatest Ts often have the loudest classes! It’s called productive noise! #engagechat
A4 #engagechat Treat your students with respect, have a sense of humor, overteach routines at the beginning of the year, movement & mind breaks, be enthusiastic and excited about what you are teaching......
https://t.co/8cct0wI5kb importance to Student voice and choice, reduction in teacher talk time ,eye contact with Ss and having them to work as per their needs and not mine is what works well for me ...I am still seeking to work on Student autonomy on a deeper level. #EngageChat
A4: planned transitions, organization, communication of expectations, daily reminder and an ability to practice expectations, routines, motivation, and monitoring.
#engagechat
A4: if Ss are interested in what they are learning, can see the relevance in what they are doing & above all know their T cares and believes in them it makes management easier #engagechat
A4 #engagechat When the trust is there relationships flourish. When a sense of community and positive culture grounds the learning environment-behavior one of engagement not distraction or disturbance
A4:Know your kids. What makes them smile? Why are they proud? Is there a task that they find frustrating? Know them. Then, meet them where they are. Anticipate needs, triggers,& frustrations. Help them find joy in learning by knowing them as more than just a student. #engagechat
A4 great Ts utilize student voice and choice as management strategies. When Ss have ownership/choice of how they’ll learn or respond to learning they are more engaged. Engagement, unlike compliance results in well managed classrooms. #engagechat
A4. Keep students interested. Have students take the lead and facilitate their learning. When students are engaged and agents of their own learning, classroom management turns into mutual engagement. Sharing a common goal. Learning. #engagechat
Classroom management issues occur when students are bored. Therefore, assignments, activities, and curriculum must be engaging and relevant while incorporating #21stcenturyskills. #higherlevelblooms#pbl#EngageChat
A4: In my humble opinion,I feel that Ss have the right to learn..that no one has the right to impede that learning. I introduce CM like the Bill of Rights. I like to hear what they feel should be involved in a peaceful and democratic learning environment. It's theirs #engagechat
A4) modelling and being consistent with follow through on expectations, engaging lessons to keep Ss busy, and developing and maintaining relationships with EACH child.
#engagechat
With teens, credibility is imp. It's really helped me to learn how they learn and to help them understand the value of curiosity, reaching for info, strategies for anchoring. #engagechat
A4 great Ts utilize student voice and choice as management strategies. When Ss have ownership/choice of how they’ll learn or respond to learning they are more engaged. Engagement, unlike compliance results in well managed classrooms. #engagechat
A4 Great teachers are structured, but flexible. Effective management techniques stem from being a true facilitator in the classroom: model, discuss, engage, allow for flexible grouping, offer assignment choice, know your students! #EngageChat
Keeping Ss engaged, building positive relationships and I like the zone of proximity and the teacher stare, both useful strategies I used on my teaching pracs last year. #engagechat
A4:Know your kids. What makes them smile? Why are they proud? Is there a task that they find frustrating? Know them. Then, meet them where they are. Anticipate needs, triggers,& frustrations. Help them find joy in learning by knowing them as more than just a student. #engagechat
Seemless transitions are so important. When things flow from one thing to the next quickly and easily - the learning environment is not disrupted. #engagechat
A4) modelling and being consistent with follow through on expectations, engaging lessons to keep Ss busy, and developing and maintaining relationships with EACH child.
#engagechat
A4 I also don't think of it as a strategy. Love all Ss, fight for them, advocate for them. Work on yourself to be the best you can for them. Help create the best school environment and climate for them. #engagechat
Q4. Genuinely, authentic relationships with Ss. Do you listen to them when they talk or do you just hear them? Do yiu greet ALL of them with open arms EVERYDAY regardless of te previous day's interactions? Do they feel loved and supported in your class? #engagechat
#engagechat A4 1 They #BELIEVE in ALL their Ss 2 They EXPECT their Ss to succeed 3. POSITIVE feedback PREVAILS over negative comments 4. Bad behavior is redirected without impacting learning 5. An aura of LOVE can be felt in the classroom 6. Ss KNOW they are loved
A4: In terms of designing engaging work. I highly recommend you check out the engagement equation in Engagement By Design (Quaglia et. al). Very great read to look from all angles. #engagechat
If you are looking for some non-traditional approaches to classroom management that empower Ss in the process, check out my book Hacking Classroom Management. Hot off the presses last month! https://t.co/WN2oqn4GC4#shamelessplug#engagechat

A3 What about going in the teacher's lounge to model positivity? We could be the role models of listening, learning and leading. I say go in the teacher's lounge and show 'em how it's done! #engagechat
A4: I'm a big fan of Love and Logic! Consistency is also a must. Ss need to know what the expectations are! Also, differentiating for specific ss to help them be successful. #engagechat
Yes! Show the parents that, as a teacher, you have a genuine, sincere interest in their child primarily, but not limited, to their learning experience. ##EngageChat
A4: making expectations clear, being consistent in holding Ss to those expectations, establishing & reinforcing structures/routines right from the get go and involving Ss in making decisions about important classroom protocols... #engagechat
A4: Creating a safe space for Ss to explore, learn, & ask ?s, but at the same time, have a sound structure such as routines in the classroom. #engagechat
A4: I'm a big fan of Love and Logic! Consistency is also a must. Ss need to know what the expectations are! Also, differentiating for specific ss to help them be successful. #engagechat
Yes, especially when no one else is doing it. School is hard for many, esp marginalized Ss. We fight for them because we love them. Otherwise, we should leave teaching. #engagechat
A5) by knowing the greatness that is already inside our colleagues and helping it come to the surface. By walking thought the risk taking of education together. #engagechat

#engagechat Collaborating on strategies that elevate the teaching of their whole team. By not teaching in isolation but in a collective- where by all they share in the beauty of a creative idea and a memorable lesson.
A5: Teachers have to share and communicate with each other. But also attend professional development. Read blogs. Talk to teachers at other schools and keep up with trends. #engagechat

A5. I reflected on this one for a minute - amazing teachers take time before the day begins to touch base with their colleagues, ask if they need anything, share how much they care and start day on a positive note #engagechat
A5) by understanding the greatness that our colleagues have & helping bring it to the surface & by walking through the risk taking adventure of education with them. #engagechat
A5: Listening to really understand, not to just respond and try to “fix”. Also, leaving judgement aside and offering to help with a genuine servant’s spirit. Teaching is not an individual competition...it is a team sport benefiting ALL kids! #engagechat
A5. You need to take time and build relationships with your colleagues. Watch them teach. Celebrate and uplift them. Co-teach. Learn together. Teachers need to feel appreciated, validated, that they make a difference. Be kind. Be the difference for them. #engagechat
A5 #engagechat - This came up in conversation today. We are a team. These are OUR students, in OUR school. Have a common goal to work toward so that teachers have ownership of the process of getting better, in all areas of the profession. Lifelong learning!!!
A5: By leading by example & encouraging or, better yet, mentoring those who are newer to the profession. Some of the older ones, you might have to resort to peer pressure. 🤷♂️ #EngageChat
A5: empowerment
Empowerment is based on the idea that giving colleagues skills, resources, authority, opportunity, motivation, as well holding them responsible and accountablefor outcomes of their actions.

#engagechat A5 1 They TEACH and LEAD in-service and professional development classes 2. They are SELFLESS and will help out 3. They SUPPORT the admin and lead by example 4. They let the other Trs know their job IS ABOUT THE KIDS!
A5 Not letting colleagues settle for status quo. Shake up the system: teach an enriched curriculum to "those" kids who are thought of as "low", design a program for what they always complain about, be the change. #engagechat
A5. Be better themselves first then look at what others need to do.extension of the eversmiling helping hand will make others more receptive, invite suggestions-you will be invited https://t.co/17pHDlPHXc yourself before you wait for the other to open up.always helps #EngageChat
A5 #engagechat Teachers make each other better when they not only praise and lift one another but also take the time to give purposeful, meaningful, mindful feedback that will bring about improvement and growth. Positive honesty.
A5: As others have said, share, share and share. Share great ideas & fabulous resources and support, support, support... help others build on their strengths to improve #engagechat

A4: The best classroom management is to know your students. Know the motives they might have. There's a difference between a student who is trying to employ delay tactics for simple kicks and a student that might have something serious going on in their lives. #engagechat
A5: #engagechat To b a great colleague you need to 1) Be a gr8 listener 2) Be willing to work w/ others and recognize that you can't do it all on your own 3) Open to advice, ideas and counsel ; 4) NEVER stop learning & sharing that knowledge; 5)Support ideas & projects of others
A5 Great Ts Make other Ts better by sharing, collaborating, & modeling effective teaching practices. Great Ts lead by example & constantly model behaviors that lead to positive/desired/reflective outcomes I say reflective bc Great Ts are not afraid to #failforward#engagechat

If I see a change in demeanor, I call home. That one phone call can often change it right back even if it doesn't fix the issue...they know I care #engagechat
Just like reaching Ss, reaching Ts depends on the individual. Some need pushed, others listened to, some need to feel supported, others encouragement.... the key is we support ALL Ts, not just the ones we always agree with or our hall. We can learn from each other. #engagechat
A5 #engagechat Every day is a celebrated sequence not only because we get the chance to teach amazing kids, but that we do not do it alone, in a dreary office- but in a colorful, environment full of chatter and creativity- every where we look -a web of possibilities
A5: They lead by example! They listen, are encouraging, are team players, invite others to share and share ideas, lessons, & pd opportunities. #EngageChat
Please take a minute to check out this graphic I created today. See ... I believe what we can learn from each other on Twitter is a true game changer. It lists chats for each Saturday morning. I hope you will share/RT - thank you! #engagechat
