A1: Reaching and Teaching Ss is about knowing each of them, and leading them further down the path https://t.co/2Z5gQpC8GW
A1: It means to give every student an opportunity to grow through positive relationships. Learning does not happen without them
A1. Means that we as a school will do whatever it takes to ensure that every student has the opportunity for success.
A1 We do whatever it takes to move children further along the continuum of learning. All achieve; some just at different rates
A1: Finding a way to meet the needs of every student who is in your class. Building relationships, setting goals with them!
A1 reaching means relationships-students trust that we believe in them and are there for them
Welcome Kristie! Glad to have you till then!
Good morning. First 8 days of school done. Sarah Reed from Ky
You just about ready for opening day?
We are still preparing them for September
It took me 9 tries to get my video!!! :)
A1: one size does not fit all, must try different teaching technique for those who aren't successful
A1 Reach/teach every Ss means creating CR community where every Ss feels valued & connected to Ts + others/peers i.e
A1 Seeing all my Ss faces light up w/delight of scientific discovery and accomplishment and confidence.
A1: I'm to do whatever it takes to connect and engage every student at my school. No exceptions, excuses. Down to me to find a way.
A1: Knowing where your Ss are, starting there, & personalizing learning to meet their current learning needs, style and choice
A1: I model this extensively in Instant Relevance. If your questions and conversations are RELEVANT to Ss, you've reached them
A1) That you are connecting, engaging, and educating all students. A great foundational relationship helps with this.
A1: Meeting every S where they are at, not always where curriculum says they should be.
A1: You have to differentiate and make learning engaging for all learners.
A1: It means connecting with and knowing your Ss, which allows you to help them move forward, it's all about the progress.
Hello neighbor. I am in the DR as well!
Not really Lots of delays due to budget. Working on schedule Mon But my attitude is ready :) 1/2 the battle right?
A1 believing every student can learn-kids just need different approaches-different ways to demonstrate as well
A1: I think it means meeting kids where they are at (academics and socially/behaviorally) and moving them forward from there.
Good morning! Kelly in IN. Teach HS English, Coach Academic Teams. Will try to keep up, working at library today. 😊

A1 "Reaching & Teaching Every Student" means what I strive for every day.
A1: I share my passion and experience and knowledge; I show my own voracious thirst for learning. And I listen to colleagues.
A1: It is important to set realistic goals for each individual Ss and help him/her work to achieve them.

Absolutely - always moving forward! https://t.co/lGiSMRSkeT
A1: It means connecting with and knowing your Ss, which allows you to help them move forward, it's all about the progress.
Good comment!
https://t.co/e85ohEmC8y
A1 We do whatever it takes to move children further along the continuum of learning. All achieve; some just at different rates
A1: Means meeting all Ss needs where they are, not just where the class is, not doing "what fits". Going the extra mile
A1: knowing your students and letting them know you care is the way to start to reach and teach
A1: We teach all the learners we have in our classroom. Not the ones we wish we had, or had last year, or a subgroup…ALL of them!
a1: Simple one like always says: ALL MEANS ALL! We don't raise the bar for some!
Good morning! I am Stacey a K-5 librarian from upstate NY peeking in!
I will! it's a 30 min chat so no late nights!
A1: EVERY S deserves their "aha" moment. LD, OHI, Autistic, gifted, average, girl, boy, Asian, white, African American, etc. etc.
A1 (2) It also means knowing them as people & learners. You arent moving anyone you don't have a relationship with!
This is one of the most rock'in fun & engaging hours on Twitter! 😊😊😊
A1: Focus on the relationships we cultivate and watch the inspiration grow from there.
A1 in order to reach & teach each student I need 2 build differentiated & personalized learning environment w/supportive community
A1:Creating engaging lessons catered to students current levels that will promote student growth and success
A1 That you have a relationship with all students and have found ways to engage all of them.
A1: Teaching & reaching ALL means so much more than course design. It's the relationships, the ambiance, the role modeling, & more.
So important! Great teachers make a difference beyond their classroom. They impact the whole school. https://t.co/5aZxPX9vlY
A1: to me it means "All Students, Our Students" - everyone in building is responsible for ALL Ss growth, not just Ss in your class
A1) Doing whatever it takes to connect w/ EVERY student. Finding interests + making learning meaningful. https://t.co/43SDZ885nK
1A)Reaching=Every student connected; Teaching=Engaged,Empowered & Learning
A1. Mindset isn't 'I've tried everything'.. Instead, it is 'I've tried a lot but have only begun to reach all Ss'
Good morning, .
A1: Purposeful personalization, relationship-building, assessment that allows for creativity, opps. for reflection
A1. It means we must find ways to open the doors of discovery to all students, regardless of where they are in their learning
A1- giving each student what the need. Being FAIR and not EQUAL. I have this discussion with my Ss in the beginning of the year.
A1 Building a relationship with each S and moving them from their point A to their point B. Make it personal and real
A1 Finding out what inspires every student so that they become engaged and open to what you r teaching.
A1: Building trusting relationships, 'respectful' & engaging learning environment, differentiation, inquiry, Genuis Hour.
This is so very true...
https://t.co/0htYgdoD0H
A1: We teach all the learners we have in our classroom. Not the ones we wish we had, or had last year, or a subgroup…ALL of them!
A1: My school just spent this 1st week doing relationship/team building to address this issue. View it as an academic investment.
A1. Equity is what "Reaching & Teaching Every Student" means to me. "All for one and one for all".
I love goal setting conferences for this very reason! Everyone has a goal that is specific to them!
A1 For students to grow, we need to know. Know what? Family life, strengths, weaknesses, passions, fears, etc.
Good morning. Middle School Counselor from NC. New to this...
Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts
A1: reminds me that we are all learners (even the teachers), and there is no single way of being reached.
A1: All about building relationships. You have to reach Ss before you can effectively teach them.
A1: Reaching- using strengths & passion to pull them into learning, Teaching - giving them info they need or how to find it.
Agreed! No significant learning takes place without a relationship!
Definitely not a one size fits all approach - so much more challenging but much more meaningful and impactful 4 kids
A1. Personalization, Differentiation, Individualization - only 1 is learner centered. Click & reflect https://t.co/ASlzMscOs0
A1: making sure that you are available and engaged with every Ss.
A1: Providing choices in learning, using genius hour or maker spaces, etc. are fun and engaging ways to reach all learners.
wheew too true! I hope they stay cool and the team does well!
A1 Teaching Ss at their level and find creative ways in order to complete that task. Knowing that you might have to take a risk.
It means constantly seeing the classroom and the students' world - and all the challenges, tension and beauty - through their eyes
A1: Using all of our available resources to meet them where they are, and take them to where they need to go.
Whatever it takes... https://t.co/hOeWObPUlv
A1 We do whatever it takes to move children further along the continuum of learning. All achieve; some just at different rates
Yes! Says it all. https://t.co/1fJhwj0urp
A1: Meeting every S where they are at, not always where curriculum says they should be.
Morning! value new teacher academy & back 2 sch startup PD then kids on Tu: active, fit, fun adult learning https://t.co/Yd8RNPx3pD
A1: Learning is voluntary. That's why we have to REACH our students first.
Good morning,Suzannereads! I had lunch with who is so excited to be a part of YOUR team!
Great point! Joy in the classroom = powerful agent, & it starts with educators. Are we finding/creating joy at school?
A1: Good morning everyone! reaching and teaching to me means creating a flexible learning environment build what they need
Great Comment! https://t.co/BdECiyuTMw
A1: It means to give every student an opportunity to grow through positive relationships. Learning does not happen without them

A1: Making sure each student believes they have something to add
Morning! Walt from Michigan. MS Principal
A1: "Reaching and teaching" means helping S's find and develop the excellence they have inside of them.
I could not agree more. Who wants to learn from someone who doesn't care about them?
A1: To never give up on a student, keep at it, find the avenue by which to reach them, never gives up!
Agreed! https://t.co/KFITJLJbdg
A1: knowing your students and letting them know you care is the way to start to reach and teach
Hello, all I am sorry I'm late. Daria from NJ
Such a good conversation to have!
A1 As Hattie states-always think about your impact
Nice! https://t.co/ccysB9Jr14
A1. Mindset isn't 'I've tried everything'.. Instead, it is 'I've tried a lot but have only begun to reach all Ss'
Good morning Checking in from Missouri. I am a middle school science teacher.
A1: Reaching & Teaching Every S means teaching to S need; meeting them where they are. Ss should be able to articulate their growth
A1: If you model your own passion for learning, others will follow! For eg, spend 3 wks in another country to learn.
Big announcement coming up at 8 AM for stay tuned
Yes! And if we all took this responsibility... Just imagine!! https://t.co/cZfvMvJwhr
A1: I'm to do whatever it takes to connect and engage every student at my school. No exceptions, excuses. Down to me to find a way.
Good morning from Texas. Coffee and a chat - nice way to start a Saturday.
A1: seeing every student as an individual and supporting them to achieve full potential
exactly. This journey done right requires hard work and dedication to get the best out of our students.
A1 Creating connection with each and every one...emphasis on every. Not just the easy ones. And doing that work together
More than half...and you will do FABULOUS!
Yes! Relationships must always come first. Always my goal to know each child (all 400) by name https://t.co/rrspZXD770
A1 (2) It also means knowing them as people & learners. You arent moving anyone you don't have a relationship with!
Love this visual! Needs to be in every classroom as a reminder!
Good afternoon from Sudan ! I'm a Year 5 and coach working at an international in Khartoum.
Santo Domingo at the Carol Morgan School. You?
A1: We teach individuals. We have to invest in each one and find their niche.
A1: Relationships #1 always - everyone on staff needs to get this -teachers, admin, custodians, everyone
A1: To reach all Ss, understanding that Ts are not alone&that there is a team to help us unlock learning for everyone.
Every student can learn...like running a race...they each have their own finish line!
A1: Reaching students means arranging for what learners need, rather than just what is expedient for me as the teacher.
https://t.co/dtcgNTY1Ia
If you don't get to know them, you will have no idea what scares them, what inspires them, what motivates them. – Bo Schembechler
A1 "Reaching & Teaching Every Student" means knowing them as unique individual instead of based on societal stereotypes
do you think its ever possible to engage & reach them all? Or is it always the goal we shoot for? Chasing perfection?
A1: Ss equitable opportunities regardless of their zip code or neighborhood they were born in
they are the foundation for a successful year. Our springboard to creating magic.
Love this! Finding the joy in earning, being excited about the discovery, Qs as the guideposts of learning https://t.co/jDzpFz9MPv
A1 Connecting with every student to make learning meaningful to them. Helping them find joy in learning.
Agree. It's not about us, it's about them! https://t.co/bh4tirSALe
It means constantly seeing the classroom and the students' world - and all the challenges, tension and beauty - through their eyes
A1: Means winning the heart before attempting to enter the mind.
A1: Reach/Teach every S means your learning with them- their interests, goals, styles. Provide various platforms so voice is heard
Yes! Ideally, we know our Ss, they know us & each other. Community crafting = better environment for learning.
The Community for Learning in Arroyo Hondo. What do you teach?
Good morning! Susan here from the Jersey Shore, better late than never! ☀️❤️☀️❤️☀️❤️
Very good point. I talk to my kids abt this as well-imp to understand! https://t.co/6Nm3L33w9Q
A1- giving each student what the need. Being FAIR and not EQUAL. I have this discussion with my Ss in the beginning of the year.
Love the fact that I keep seeing the word 'relationship' in so many of these A1's We can't reach them if we don't know them.
Good Morning - Wendy from S.E. Michingan - Literacy Coach/Consultant
A1: teaching to the margins, the least dangerous assumption ALL S can learn when we provide and belive
Exactly what I wrote about in Instant Relevance! Connections mean everything
A1: The "reaching" part of this statement is crucial. It is what allows the learning to happen.
A1: That every student is unique, come to meet them with an open heart & mind (regardless of what other Ts said)
Good Morning, Jennifer Sharp from NJ...Director Of Personnel...former teacher, AP, Principal. https://t.co/qz3a5fNraa
A1- Teachers should observe & take data on Ss in the beginning of the year to get to know Ss & give them what they need (1/2)
Yes! You have to want to learn. But Ts can inspire Ss to want to learn. https://t.co/OHY9fSM2sC
A1: Learning is voluntary. That's why we have to REACH our students first.
Ashlie; 5th grade teacher; central pa; Good Morning!
I agree the first couple of chats are scary...and then it becomes addictive
So important...not just the easy ones but everyone!
Yes, David! I'm hoping kids have curious and creative Ts that make them hungry to learn!
A1 Genius Hour is a perfect way to reach all S's. They get to learn at their own pace & succeed in different ways.
A1 It means names not labels; it means listening not lecturing. It means believing in each and every kid.
Q2: How do you physically design your classroom and/or school to meet the needs of all students?
So true on multiple levels Connections via relationships, connections betwn concepts 4 deep understand..
everyone wants to learn something...
A1 4 kids 2 thrive along w us, we must 1st respond culturally, w empathy, curiosity to hear & know them as people b/f as students,
totally worth waking up early on a Saturday for!
A1: Building trusting relationships, 'respectful' & engaging learning environment, differentiation, inquiry, Genuis Hour.
A1) It may be overused, but keeping things equitable. What each needs is different than give them same. https://t.co/leKQYsEzjP
Founder of the school & now the secondary directory. How do you like the DR
A2: Let the students design the classroom themselves so that it facilitates an ideal learning environment for them, not me.
Help request: Anyone willing to share Am History units you love. Got my schedule really late. Thought:"Ahh, my PLN." Tku:)
A1 Working strategically as a community to connect 21st c teaching to the needs of 21st c learning.
A1: relationships are job #1. Difficult to reach students could care less about you or your class until they realize you care.
A1: build relationships, build community, build Ss up and the learning will happen!
A1) Understanding your students needs and learning strengths; making learning real; building off their passions
A2:Redesigning class space is huge! But be sure to INVOLVE the Ss to ensure their voices are heard in process.
QUESTION 2
https://t.co/OvGF20HOb1
Q2: How do you physically design your classroom and/or school to meet the needs of all students?
A2 First step is to think more about designing for learning than decorating for cuteness.
Definitely possible and attainable. Planning is paramount. Early year investment is key in learning students interests.
We use differentiated assessments to meet the needs of all learners. https://t.co/1uGJRkHDRP
Very good point. I talk to my kids abt this as well-imp to understand! https://t.co/6Nm3L33w9Q
A1- giving each student what the need. Being FAIR and not EQUAL. I have this discussion with my Ss in the beginning of the year.
A1-by getting to know Ss,Ts can find out who they are&their interests & input those elements into lessons to make learning relevant
Nope! It's for all teachers in general. My examples are often from my Math experience, but not focused on it.
Educators should model the excitement and joy in learning that is needed so badly in classrooms.
A2: Designed space to foster relationships & community, but also quiet nooks for who need time away.
A1: giving ss what they need to be successful, accommodating all styles and needs, being in tune with them https://t.co/iPJZFOReSd
Most important thing on the "To Do List" at the beginning of the year. building relationships sets the tone for the year!
A1: Building relationships w/ Ss. Allow for student voice and choice in the classroom.
A2. How do you design classrooms/schools to meet student needs? You design your room/school to meet the needs of ALL students.
A1 Looking past the body in the desk. What has that student been through in 24 hours to get back to that spot (or not back)?
A2. It's a never ending puzzle where room is fluid in design to meet Ss needs that constantly change during the year
A2: I set seats so all face center of room. No need to have "preferential seating" since all Ss are equal. I move around a lot!
2A) Design spaces to meet the student's needs & provide choice
A2: Giving learning options, room for seat work, standing work centers, group work areas, quiet corners, tech tables, variety!
A2: Has to be my fav thing to do! Make it "homey", comfy, inviting, zones for different learning styles, movable/flexible seating.
A1: Seimens (2005) theory of connectivism is this! Knowing the where to go as well as the what / how / why of learning
A2 Clssrm should be arranged so Ss see more fronts of faces than the backs of heads. They need to see a clssrm is all of us
A2 Design for needs of all Ss = Space for Ss to share ideas/thoughts both physical and virtual
"Overused" because it is such a powerful and true image!
Totally agree w/. JOY is so important in learning. https://t.co/rexJQPpalJ
A1 Connecting with every student to make learning meaningful to them. Helping them find joy in learning.
I love "names not labels" So agree!! https://t.co/EPmjYZrFlS
A1 It means names not labels; it means listening not lecturing. It means believing in each and every kid.
Great suggestions
https://t.co/PeJwEkOy40
A2: Designed space to foster relationships & community, but also quiet nooks for who need time away.
A2: I don't-that's why I need to see what others are doing
A2 Designing for learning for all learners means options abound.
A2: Love this question! I'm just going to soak up ideas here. I've seen so many creative ones on twittr already!
Brian, HS principal from Mass.
A2: Flex seating of course, but also a fluid room. I will allow the space to change to suit the needs of my Ss.
A2: Not a one size fits all approach. Flexibility, variety, and all contribute.
A2: Class pets engage all learners at many levels, inspire questioning & investigation
A2: First and foremost, I want my school to be welcoming & have S learning as the focus. All else comes from that.
A2 Our school offers a reinforcement/extension block for ALL kids 30 min a day for ALL kids to succeed https://t.co/byLpM9fqMr
good morning Kylene thanks for joining us
Agree Paul! Now more than ever we have the means to reach every student. It's now about us, it's about them https://t.co/RM2ouK7YYm
A1: Good morning everyone! reaching and teaching to me means creating a flexible learning environment build what they need
A1- in my 'welcome letter' I ask Ss to fill out a google form so I can get to know them a little bit before the year starts.
A2: create a positive environment that fosters growth- flexible seating that includes a variety of options for student choice
A1: Building relationships is main focus at the beginning, not the syllabus. I want to know what they're curious/concerned about.
A2 we're just starting to talk about this - so looking for some inexpensive ideas!
A2 (2) Reader's & Writer's Workshop set up an individualized approach through conferences & goal setting https://t.co/ffw2KMcyGF
Q2: How do you physically design your classroom and/or school to meet the needs of all students?
Physical space is so important in allowing for movement of Ss & Ts. Allow for Ts to get to Ss who need help & vice versa.
A2 Flex seating, choice, variety of learning opportunities to show what they know
THIS!
https://t.co/fPx7xhQxxB
A2 First step is to think more about designing for learning than decorating for cuteness.
A2: get Ss involved in the design process as much as possible, be open & flexible, find creative solutions
A2:Took 10 snap vids of my room last Sun. You can see it in my Twitter feed.Seated in quads.Café, lone table/chairs for alone time.
A2 Design your class with multiple functions w/ max flexibility. Make it easy to function and change to multiple settings.
A2: Include the Ss in the process. How do they learn best? What contributes to their success?
A1) Reaching for our own learning about their culture and teaching their history, not just mine. Mine is inaccurate and "gappy"
A2: Never view the physical space as stagnant. Go to diff parts of the building, outside, move desks.
A2.2: I'm also expanding my flexible seating options. Ss need their place to grow their mindset. Options help!
That includes engaging activities, collaboration, and more importantly coaching of social/behavior/career.
A2) We designed spaces in our new school to accommodate students and groups of various sizes. Spaces for 1, 5, 15, 30, 60...1500
Flex seating? Elaborate please! :)
who just finishd first week of , be proud of what you've accomplished, and fix what needs to be fixed come Monday
We want to learn! But ... "Never let school get in the way of your education." ~Mark Twain. https://t.co/Ggh2gtPBvZ
everyone wants to learn something...
nows the time to build the relationship and invest… thanks!
A2 HS principal recently asked - what if we brought kids in to set up learning spaces in their classes?
Megan Campbell-Va High school history teacher, late but thought I would join once I started seeing fun A1 responses!
A2: it's about flexibility to work with the space to meet the students not the students to meet the space
Love how you phrased this! https://t.co/5tTwkeS1sB
A2 Clssrm should be arranged so Ss see more fronts of faces than the backs of heads. They need to see a clssrm is all of us
You always share the best infograhics! Thanks!!
A2 Learning spaces that recognize learning on my own, learning with others, learning with me (teacher).
yes, learning style inventories and getting to know their interests from Day 1 is so powerful!
A2 Collaboration tables. Create a culture that allows for movement &fosters deep meaningful discussion. Establish protocols early.
A2: I have to let go of much planning ahead, can't be S-responsive until you know your Ss. My basic framework adjusts to S needs.
A2: I had Ts rename "lesson plans" as "Ss Experiences." and it changed the way they designed the classroom too
Such truth! We can't forget this“: A1: Learning is voluntary. That's why we have to REACH our students first."
A2(2): Keep items to make Ss successful. Stability balls, wobble seats, Bike pedals (can go under a table/desk), & quiet spaces
A@: some of my best math lessons were in the gym. Throwing paper airplanes, finding area and perimeter, running sprints.
A2: Variety of seating options; Ss can experience different parts of the classroom; flexibility
a2 wow big ?Classroom space - stand sit walk ponder where Ss will be and how learning will look like. https://t.co/kmJ1HeGWOB
A2) Work to create a welcoming environment for all... and get
had a blog post on this topic
A2: be open 2 creative ways Ts &Ss collab 2 create great working spaces. Tossed my desk. Only have round table.
A1 Relationships with students first! Listen to student voices.
A2) Create flexible learning spaces, not rows of desks; have students be part of the creation so it is "their" space.
A2: By embracing 21st cent. not 19th or 20th learners, no need for neat rows of desks etc.
Everything is on locking casters in my room, with moving vehicle writing spaces it shifts to Ss needs.
A2) Make it interesting! The best seating arrangements look strange to those that don't understand your students.
Good Morning ! Tom from Richmond, VA. Looking forward to learning from you today!
Thanks Ben. Will be using your term academic investment when we open in one week. https://t.co/SZZcMe9d3y
A1: My school just spent this 1st week doing relationship/team building to address this issue. View it as an academic investment.
Your thoughtful compliment fluffs my ego so early on a Satuday morning! Thank >you<
A2: Develop a culture of student voice and choice in your school. Not just lip service…ideas that generate action.
A2: in our O week, we survey our (adult) students about their preferred learning styles. Results given to T's to assist w planning
A2 It means thinking more about pedagogy than pinterest when choosing what goes where.
Combined Homeroom with period 1..cut out some of the unnecessary student movement throughout building & increased learning time.
A2: Here's a good one, too. Ask your students how they're comfortable learning!
a2 1-1 small group table by window so student can work outside. Tables around back of room w/dry erase walls
A2: some of my best math lessons were in the gym: throwing paper airplanes, running sprints, finding area and perimeter.
No rows please! They make my heart hurt when I see them in a classroom
I am with you.! I want my Ss excited to Coe back on Day 2 https://t.co/kUrdeiPE2D
Most important thing on the "To Do List" at the beginning of the year. building relationships sets the tone for the year!
A2: A shift in focus, not how does it look, but how does it function for this group of learners.
A2: I try to make my school a place Ts love to come to every day. That makes a better experience for Ss.
A2 We've tried to create spaces that are welcoming, that encourage collaboration and celebrate learning.
A2. Anyone have photos of flex space room design?
A2: Continued:We have a couple 5x7 rugs & a wall-mounted, lg erase board that I envision being dedicated to brainstorming learners.
A2 Set my room up this year with more collaborative spaces! Love hearing the students having conversations about their learning
A2. Design w flexibility. One design doesn't work all yr round. MOVE things to change it up!
A2 Ask S what they want, what is best for their learning needs https://t.co/RMCfReJXqC
Q2: How do you physically design your classroom and/or school to meet the needs of all students?
A2: a school that is inviting to all learners is safe, accessible to everyone, representative of every student...
wow, love this Denis! Immediately has us planning w/ a different lens.
A2: The space we teach in shapes our pedagogy. Design decisions must be in line with how we intend to teach!
Awesome! I'm sure the kids LOVE it!
A2: Flexible classroom set up, but also be able to learn outside the room & building.
A2 flexible, multiple seating/standing choices, more white space 4 kid work, skip commercial wall fillers, comfort, zones 4 learning
I would love to hear what you did
Excellent! It was such a powerful week! I honestly believe our Ss are now ready to take on anything and succeed!
A2: set up a croom that helps Ss feel comfortable. On day 1I want them to feel like it is a fun place to be-even if they "hate hist"
Love the idea of student voice and choice! Working on that this year with opportunities to show what they learned
A2:This we transformed our entire school, student pictures on the wall, teachers created student centered classes
A2 and that’s what it’s all about! https://t.co/maPRozs4y5
A2 Set my room up this year with more collaborative spaces! Love hearing the students having conversations about their learning
A2) Classrooms should be cheerful, well taken care of, and intentional in design. Everything that is up should have a purpose!
A3 This year I'm taking a huge diversification approach with . Choice in assignments can personalize instruction
I ask parents to fill out a strength/areas of growth sheet for my firsties. I learn so much.
I love the idea of the space being "fluid". Great way to describe a great learning space!
A2 Keep food, clothes, shoes, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes/paste, hair care in my office. Basics needs met so Ss ready to learn.
a2 in order to differentiate and personalize, spend beginning of year learning how to learn and work together. Love
A2: keep in mind busy walls and spaces can be very distracting to some students
A2: I concur:) https://t.co/wTcYzp97Jf
A2: it's about flexibility to work with the space to meet the students not the students to meet the space
A2 I ask myself on a daily basis would I want to be in my own class and making changes accordingly!
A2- student desks are clustered in groups of 4-5 to allow for conversation, collaboration, helping one another, team work, etc.
Best wishes for an inspiring and engaging school year in which your students soar to new heights in learning.
paint that you could use erasable markers on. Just like a whiteboard in class. Great way to share work.
A2 Huge KLEWS charts for recording learning progress over time.
Overslept! Checking in late from MN! 4th grade teacher :)
Learning space can be anywhere inside or out. Tables, space to move, bean bags , flexible seating
A2 Sometimes difficult to change furniture, etc., but should be arranged so T & S's can move easily throughout room.
A2: By providing a positive, safe haven where everyone feels welcome. Place where S's use explosive curosity and take risks.
A2: Always keep UDL principles in mind. Be flexible and fluid to adjust to any changing needs of Ss and staff.
I agree that space shapes pedagogy ... & also student behaviour.
Sure thing! I'm already outlining a blog piece for it. It was simply too powerful not to share!
yes! I do the same thing. It is the parents' first homework assignment 😊
I need to utilize learning spaces outside the classroom walls!! Around the building more!
we want to celebrate a vision of Ss cent learning not compliance
A2: Allow Ss be part of the process. Embrace Ss needs vs a Ts need for the space to look a certain way.
A2 We make the environment welcoming & S centered. Lots of school colors & student work, S painted murals everywhere
A2.1: classroom space should welcome collaborative learning with open spaces, re-arrangeable seating- that Ss can move as needed.
I totally agree on leaving the students wall space and resisting the urge to cover everything.
A3. Differentiation in classroom instruction is different for all subject areas based on materials/text used for a lesson.
as of now, I'm keeping desks...hoping once I build up my options I'll start to take some away! Some Ts against idea.
sure! DM me your email address!
A2 Teacher said recently - if my classroom setup stays same over a week, I'm not responding 2 diff learning needs thru instruction
A2: don't forget snacks! https://t.co/vbzAyc5K9b
A2 Keep food, clothes, shoes, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes/paste, hair care in my office. Basics needs met so Ss ready to learn.
A2: Giving choice in working space. Students work in many different spaces(closets, greenhouse, the hallway). Can be hectic
I am increasingly less enamored with the term “student-centered." Can we use “learning-centered” instead?
A2: I think in regards to classrooms, sometimes less is more. Your environment needs to be just right!
A2:Flexible seating.I have a standing desk,floor table,bean bags,bungee chairs,&just got Hokki stools from &
Hi Kathy! I get my Ss outside with clipboards & they are so focused on observing & measuring!
DM me your email address so I can send it to you 😊
Exactly! Create quiet spaces for those who need it.
A2 In my library I have the flexibility to move furniture and kids around. I collaborate with Ts and give them the flexibility too
Hello. Tonya Sconiers from Duluth Public Schools in Minnesota
Explosive curiosity! Love it!!
https://t.co/Eds4BwZxjX
A2: By providing a positive, safe haven where everyone feels welcome. Place where S's use explosive curosity and take risks.
Me too! It's helpful in HS when you share classrooms and have less control over the physical set up
That's how I would want to learn for sure.
A2 Learning environment contingent to needs of the learners, intentionally designed for Ss to become more self-regulated over time
Always looking for ways to revamp this. Can't wait to read it
A2 some Ts trying flexible seating this year. Anybody have restrictive policies (fire code, board) that makes doing this difficult?
love the self evaluation! This mindset also sets a good example for Ss!🖖
A3: knowing every student, how they learn, where they learn beast, what they need for success, and giving it to them
A2: P.S. Get rid of your desk so that you are forced to sit with your students and work, learn, & grow side by side.
A3: Each one, reach one. Meeting Ss right where they are academically, socially & emotionally. Tailor instruction.
Just acquired stand up desk. It will move to the students. Going to "center based" learning this year. https://t.co/mY0HuL8P8U
Redesigned media ctrs to become collaborative work/project based learning spaces equipped w/tech, white boards, chrg stations, etc
A2b: No desks. I don't have a T desk & my Ss use tables.
What a great idea! Going to do the same! https://t.co/o31KBRoEMY
A2: I had Ts rename "lesson plans" as "Ss Experiences." and it changed the way they designed the classroom too
A1 Caring about and knowing all Ss so you are able to meet them wherever they are when they walk through your door.
A3) Differentiation is doing what's best for every student in the room. Treat them all as if they had an IEP.
A3: We all learn different-DA. Provide engagement techniques to keep them involved. Journal, survey, gallery walk, video, etc
A3 DI is critical to meet students where they are and bring them to a place farther along the continuum of learning
A3 Differentiation in my CR has a foundation in inquiry & Qs-posing Qs that matter to Ss, supporting Ss asking own Qs 2 drive learn
A3: It's about the kids ... it's not about the lesson.
YES! Used items around the house, gallon buckets and crates, to add to my room.
I love it student voice needs to be amplified
I think you can offer flex seating with desks. Sit on chair, on floor, on desk top, stand with clipboard...
A3 If students are pursuing answers to their own questions, that's differentiation.
Mic Drop! They go hand in hand. I can't stand behind a podium, put Ss in bean bag chairs, & expect change https://t.co/8uq6GtQSEL
A2: The space we teach in shapes our pedagogy. Design decisions must be in line with how we intend to teach!
This is the statement of a truly reflective educator focused on student learning. https://t.co/s4Cb6hN45H
A2 Teacher said recently - if my classroom setup stays same over a week, I'm not responding 2 diff learning needs thru instruction
A3: To steal the title from a very good book: Fair Is Not Always Equal.
A2: I'm an AP, I've used badges to personalize PD & set up collaborative time for Ts during school day. https://t.co/NhYdJCaB0L
A3:Meeting students where they are. Students that have it move them on
Yes, yes we can.🖖 https://t.co/TW1FEKxzI5
I am increasingly less enamored with the term “student-centered." Can we use “learning-centered” instead?
A3 Differentiation means thinking of the path + place needed to help each kid succeed.
Thanks! They do, and have already taken advantage of it during this first week we just had.
A3: DI is an approach that looks to meet the learning needs of every S based on their readiness and ability.
A3: View it as fluid and necessary. Work with others, know your Ss and diff is a little easier. Research like crazy for more ideas.
Learning not static, so why should learning environment be. Fluid. Start with the "why"
A3: Differentiates comes both academically and emotionally. We must met our Ss where their needs are to drive our instruction.
A3. Understanding the individual road maps that each S must take to reach the same destination
Thanks, ! 1st year out of HS- feel like I grad in leaving HS & coming to MS! Excited!! Best wishes to you for great year!
A2: I teach online, so I have to ensure my learning spaces & live sessions account for all comers. Variety and choice ✅
I see both as having the same goal!
A3: Assess what Ss need to learn your content. Provide appropriate experiences for Ss and Be flexible https://t.co/oxgckHNWeg
A3: differentiation is about the process of conveying the info to Ss, not differing the info. The options for Ss meet needs!
Or have to share a room with other Ts? https://t.co/vbLH5jPmqW
A2 some Ts trying flexible seating this year. Anybody have restrictive policies (fire code, board) that makes doing this difficult?
A3: Differentiation is all about providing reasonable choices for content, process, or product that allow learners to flourish!
A3 hook students w/visual phenomena, tailor Qs & reading/writing tasks, caring & supportive env w/lots of conversations
A3: Every S is taking a different, customized path to maximize their growth based on what they care about. https://t.co/sPbEDfFB8Q
A2 I just got rid of my desks for this school year. Can't wait to try flexible seating with tables and community supplies!
A2: I use lg kidney table. Wish HSs would ditch the desk/chair combos and go to more tables. No teacher desk - was a space killer
Yes! Glad to hear this. I was a little nervous about my bare walls at 'Meet the Teacher".
Like that! Because if you are learning centered you have to focus in students! https://t.co/HpUNVmmHWT
I am increasingly less enamored with the term “student-centered." Can we use “learning-centered” instead?
A3-Ss need to receive instruction at their level & then pushed forward. Can't be too easy (lose interest) or too hard (frustration)
this is great! It's so true.
A1: Start with relationships and relevance. We visited every S b4 school started. Ss shared their dreams. https://t.co/POuzaKO3LS
A3: Limit my whole group lesson 15 min tops, independent/group work needs to meet their learning level-challenge/review
A2 redesigning the classroom to spark learning is an invitation to bring passion, vigor into Ss lives
A3: Creating a culture where S's own learning & have freedom to demonstrate mastery using their desired communicative channels.
A3) Start with every S where the are. Help each student grow at his/her own pace, but do not leave anyone out or behind!
Sometimes when you give students choice in their work they differentiate for themselves. That is the best!
A3: This has to be a focus everyday, more small groups, less whole group teaching to start
A3: It's tough, but important to build in individual time with each student.
Have to leave to get on plane back home! Have a good rest of the chat!
A3: You have to KNOW them ... before you can differentiate for them.
A3 It is all about the needs of the students!
Ha, ha! T's are the best at 'upcycling'!
A3: Giving students what they need. Regardless of what the lesson plans have scheduled.
As opposed to “teacher-centered,” yes. But “student-centered” feels soft. What is the purpose of school? Learning.
A2 I saw a breakoutEDU post where the Ss broke out the classroom supplies - great way to give ownership. Want to try it
A3: As a SpEd teacher, differentiation is all we do. Planning a must, make sure all S's work on goals. Now tech integration helps!
A3: letting the Ss know they have different options for showing their understanding. I may not give it, but they have choice.
" learning-centered" includes staff as well, good choice of words.🖖
A2 Yes make your classroom appeal to Ss' passions.
A3: With the incorporation of tech, differentiation is easier! Pathways & choice to everyone.
A3: Learning is Google Maps. Same destination, diff start points, multiple routes. But we all get there! https://t.co/evEqjAti0q
definitely as one size does not fit all we need to consider individual needs to support that learning growth
A3: Like to build this into performance based assessments. Mastery doesn't have to look the same for everyone
a3: Let's not sugarcoat it, DI is not easy, but it's the difference between planning to teach vs planning for learning!
its important to start the year with room for the students to make the space their own ht
A3: we need to talk less about differentiation and more about
A3 (2): Having levels. They each have individualized education plans.
markbarnes19: RT PaulONeill1972: A1: Means winning the heart before attempting to enter the mind.
A3) Differentiation is where we see less sit and get and more dialogue. Let kids talk to each other and you. Learn questioning
markbarnes19: creator joining from sunny Cleveland - home of champions.
A3 Creating multiple activities that draw on various skills and challenge all learners is essential for student growth.
Definitely one of my favorite books and is an amazing in person speaker as well https://t.co/AcnbqmrASP
A3: To steal the title from a very good book: Fair Is Not Always Equal.
Q3 Diff should use small group instruction at every level: ES/MS/HS to provide community and opportunity for relelvancy & growth
A4) Barriers could be buy-in from staff understanding all could achieve at high levels.
A2- I created a library nook so students don't have to read at their desks, they can get comfy here! https://t.co/UxcuksXcZP
A3, Differentiation: Ts present differently; Ss have choice in learning direction/presentation; Ss assess differently.
YES!! YES!! YES!!! Public record of thinking https://t.co/Q0K7sgzQw6
A2 Huge KLEWS charts for recording learning progress over time.
I love this idea! Do you have pictures?
.A3 presenting an array of options 4 S's to access content, experience the learning process,& display mastery thru varied products
A3) Every piece of content, project, or lesson can be differentiated. Extra thought and planning can ensure every S learns.
I would argue that my classroom is a place “for the students” but it’s because we’re all focused on learning.
Good morn . Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here for a bit while on family mini-cation in upstate NY.
A3 Less "stage" time for me, more guiding and coaching Ss along side them.
A3: Ss get instruction where they are at. It stretches them and promotes curiosity. Formative assmt informs instr.
get kids to fill spaces - they can make anything - says your work is valued - and saves you $$
A3: Giving each student what they need to be successful. Challenging those who "got it" while cont to meet others where they are.
agreed. His book changed the way I looked at and practiced grading in my classes.
A1: Every S is different. We can't say "we've always done it this way!" Our Ss need to learn to take risks and so should we!
A3 STEAM engineering projects bring out different strengths in all students. Ss can contribute & shine in different ways
When I speak for less time & do so more succinctly, people remember it better & longer. Isn't that ironic? John Maxwell
A3: encourage and celebrate different ways into learning
That tent is awesome! My 2nd grade T had a bathtub with blankets in it for reading. I loved it! https://t.co/cRVZZSzlCh
A3: Options- rather than creating a recipe for Ss, (with guidance) S choose their platform & tools to demonstrate their knowledge.
A3: Direct instruction in short chunks, target follow up when needed, inquiry-based learning, lots of application opportunities.
. We can be “student-centered” without being “learning-centered.” Focus needs to be on what promotes learning!
A3 Homework hurts some students more than it helps! Living in a shelter, car, floor of a friend? Be flexible with assignments!!
I have tons at home and work, out of town now, but I can look when I get home
A3: Differentiated means utilizing a variety of strategies as a T & allowing Ss to do the same in order to reach learning objective
I want to utilize more pretests so that Ss who know the material can drive their own instruction on that unit/topic
fair point, but the shift to student centered instruction is to create attainable learning experience for the students
A3: All Ss don't need the same thing at the same time. Fact.
So important to do today! https://t.co/EFjpUcnoMD
A3. Differentiation in classroom instruction is different for all subject areas based on materials/text used for a lesson.
A3: Nonverbal directions/visuals makes clsrm instructions fail proof. I add hand signals like air traffic controllers for ELLs.
everything that we do should be formative. Summative should only happen at the very end if at all https://t.co/UUUgG8fmqO
A3: Ss get instruction where they are at. It stretches them and promotes curiosity. Formative assmt informs instr.
A3: One of the best ways to differentiate INSTRUCTION, is to differentiate ASSIGNMENTS. It's about what the kids are doing!
A3 PATH + PACE moves toward differentiation.
A3: Maximizing your teaching so your Ss have the most potential for growth!! Doing what's best for EACH of them
A3: Offering different options for assessments-Ss choose which one they'd like to complete
A3: Differentiation is the logical and necessary outcome of formative assessment in a standards-based classroom.
A3 You have to know your Ss and their abilities to differentiate instruction and learning experiences.
A2 Look at 's Spaces & Places for ideas on redesigning classrooms for exciting learning opportunities.
Agree, agree, agree! Show me a Clssrm arrangement & I can reasonably guess how that clssrm operates https://t.co/RrNLodXryL
A2: The space we teach in shapes our pedagogy. Design decisions must be in line with how we intend to teach!
A3 Diff should use small group instruction at every level: ES/MS/HS to provide community and opportunity for relevancy & growth
A4. Barriers are all around education. Equity is the biggest problem facing class size, scheduling, course offerings, technology...
Love this! This is something that I am working on this year!
A3: Ts need to be able to teach to the S, rather than the test. If each Ss needs are met, learning differentiates itself
A3: Essentially, leaners make decisions about what they study (as often as possible), & make choices re: the way they share it.
A3 every student gets what they need in how they learn and what they produce. We can also be flexible in time
I'm Jean D. Librarian in Houston and tardy! 🤓
A3 planning time for 1-on-1 & small group tutorials helps me help students move from where they are to where they can go next.
send pics home as kids make lrning relevant bulletin board border, posters, their work
Morning! A3: Differentiation means doing what's best for kids. UDL. It's not just one more thing. It's the whole thing.
A3 Give Ss different ways to experience and reflect what they're learning. Variety and choice!
as Ts, we need to make sure their "choices" are focused on their learning. Some Ss will stray from this.
Thanks! I use it in my book Instant Relevance, too.
Inquiry Based Lessons Require Flexibility (Part 1) - Work in Progress - Education Week Teacher https://t.co/gTEqKwiOg8
Not disagreeing! :-) I think we can be “student-centered” without being “learning-centered” though. That’s a problem.
How about doing the ordering wSs? HAve next year's Ss join U 4 day, collaborate & break them out 2gether?? https://t.co/YPWtfbfo4g
A2 I saw a breakoutEDU post where the Ss broke out the classroom supplies - great way to give ownership. Want to try it
I would argue should be based on students learning needs https://t.co/9jSpGanrru
A3. Differentiation in classroom instruction is different for all subject areas based on materials/text used for a lesson.
A3 - Not DI (too limiting). Must be UDL (universal). By definition, it reaches all learners. https://t.co/LJTPeMUrvN
too many times the emotional piece is forgotten about and the important, taboot!
inspirational view - nice writing deck!
Yes, I totally agree. Focus on growth and building in strengths. Flexible assessment allows for this.
Agreed...and it isn't the sole indicator of student success.
Agreed! Allow student to ask and pursue answers to their own questions! https://t.co/KTmzJYj9nx That's differentiation
A3: Ss getting a variety of opportunities depending on their instructional needs. It's not a one way fits all mentality. S centered
A3 My co teacher was instrumental in implementing Station activities last year. Highly engaging for all of our learners.
Yes! Along with options for classwork-how do they want to show what they learned! Love it!
absolutely. Using that data should help Ss set goals for their personal learing.
& even summative assessments should be formative, shaping student learning & self awareness.
Agree. It also encourages discussion, and important ingredient to a social studies classroom
If you love , join tomorrow at 9am to discuss healthy risk taking
What does stand for? I've never heard that term.
Starting from scratch, as I'm just returning to a classroom.
A3 Great-that's the mark of a good coach/facilitator: be the guide on the side not the sage on the stage
Signing off have a great week amazing PLN - I have a dissertation chapter to polish
it can't be. A portfolio is much deeper in that department
Yes! I call this a "buffet" of choice...including where they design the activities and assessments.
A3 For some reason, I can't stop thinking "To each according to their needs, from each according to their strengths."
Don't forget to include the hashtag to tweets with your blogs to add to our resource list. Visit and read!
Don't forget to include the hashtag to tweets with your blogs to add to our resource list. Visit and read!
A4: school policies, i.e. "we can't have bean chairs, they are a fire hazard"
A3 The opposite of this, instruction should be dynamic and able to reach all Ss where they are. https://t.co/IscyviNcQG
A3 is using for learning. I can assess interests and academics and it's moving us all forward!
A4 When there's 1 T and 28 S the odds are not in the T favor know how each S are learning each moment & be accessible to everyone.
A3: Meeting Ss needs at their level. Frequent checks for understanding & small group instruction that challenges @ those levels.
yes, all learning should be on-going - which is why the way the system is set up is stifling
Absolutely! Room arrangement should be conducive to the instruction taking place https://t.co/fJgEW8Pfnv
A2 Teacher said recently - if my classroom setup stays same over a week, I'm not responding 2 diff learning needs thru instruction
Google Forms is also VERY powerful for pre-assessment data.
Don't fall in love with the sound of your own words. Peggy Noonan
BREAKING: 3rd Annual Tomorrow's Classrooms Today Conference is happening on 5.20.17. Call for Presenters: https://t.co/n44JXPfxci
Exactly! Love their creations.
Tough part about teaching, some Ss need the sage on the stage, while others are okay w/ guide on the side. Tough bouncing between.
A3: In the end, differentiation is about giving students a voice in their own education. Promotes growth and responsibility.
More than 40% college students end up in remedial classes. Many blame K-12. This doc probes deeper. https://t.co/VCcPrl7M6h
A1: Teachers need to question whether what they do is relevant to students - if not, then we are not reaching every child
A3:Whole class instruction in short chunks, targeted follow up as needed, inquiry-based learning, lots of application opportunities.
A3: Differentiation is scaffolding instruction and working with small groups with similar abilities.
it's a local jetty. We also headed to the cafe strip for urban inspiration.
A3 We put skills on a spectrum bc growth for one S in collaboration might equal the growth another has in creative problem solving
A3 Start w what Ss CAN do, link to what is known, help them discover analogous thinking to build strategic processing and thinking
Exciting times, Chris-Enjoy experience. When I taught grad class/summer institute, each morn I came in to redesign rm.
Even if it's not "perfect".
Yes! And not to sound like a broken record abt , but that's exactly what GH does for S's! https://t.co/s506VlXg0b
A3 If students are pursuing answers to their own questions, that's differentiation.
Differentiation depends on good collaboration between Ts, Ss & school. It needs an atmosphere of respect, inclusion & understanding
Q4: What are the barriers you encounter when "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"?
Yes,bc I teach hs I sometimes have to carve out time outside of the school day to do this. But it's ALWAYS worth it
A4 Time is always a barrier but ti does take time to individualize for all children especially if class sizes are high
A3: being flexible and open to changing needs of all Ss. Not all needs/ abilities are the same so the solutions shouldn't be.🖖
learnng requires flexibility! Start with the "why"
A4: building relationships, availability of resources (what I want v. What I have)...Ps not allowing school to provide resources...
Great strategy that pays dividends the entire year! https://t.co/05z1qJROTw
Yes! Relationships must always come first. Always my goal to know each child (all 400) by name https://t.co/rrspZXD770
A1 (2) It also means knowing them as people & learners. You arent moving anyone you don't have a relationship with!
sometimes its the lack of perfection that gives evidence of the
can't have a conversation about reaching alllearners without emphasizing UDL!
A2: Classroom designs should never be fixed, they should change to suit the purpose of the learning taking place
So many great tools. I like as combo pretest & hook. Discuss Qs that will be essential
YES! and be honest with themselves so that they can make the necessary changes! Ss deserve it!
A4: Biggest barrier is the ENORMOUS amount of time needed to plan for . But WORTH it when the light bulb comes on.
A4: After 4 yrs out of the daily instructional mode, I feel like I will be my own biggest barrier.
Q4 TIME! There is so much pressure on Ts to get through the curriculum. We need to make sure r priorities r right
A4: A one-size-fits-all mindset that is all to pervasive in education. Easier? Sure. Best for ALL our students? No way!!!
I've done the same -I went "shopping" around my house to see what I could use in my classroom for seating options
A4: Time is a barrier. Traditional grading systems are a barrier. Ss for so long have always though about end grade, not process.
A3: Really enjoy this recent graphic created by . Differentiation provides choices but T heavy https://t.co/lrtPEhyAhZ
Right on the money. We need to strive for a multi-functional classroom! :-) https://t.co/FYBo3HdMmS
Tough part about teaching, some Ss need the sage on the stage, while others are okay w/ guide on the side. Tough bouncing between.

QUESTION 4
https://t.co/bfof2XhUOi
Q4: What are the barriers you encounter when "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"?
“Your School’s UX. What is it? And where to start.” by what do kids feel, see, smell, hear .. https://t.co/keIjEqPDS1
Thank you. I'm going to look it up
This is great, Jim. And those are awesome opps too! We need more math science combo lessons.
BREAKING❗️Donald Takes Small Lead In LA Times "Daybreak" Poll, Erasing 4-pt Deficit from 8/13/2016 https://t.co/bUoJTxPOJl
Thanks! Love your bathtub idea!
A4: My 1st barrier is always my preconceived notions of what school/learning looks like. Getting over myself & keeping kids first.
A4 Pacing is a challenge. Some are ready to move forward before others. Must be prepared for that.
A4 When the pacing guide is seen as required pace, then education for too many is about keeping up in a race.
Nothing says "I've Learned!" like creating something new!
Thoughts on how to move from Differentiation&Personalization to Individualization. Each have a place.
do you think that's doable in terms of instruction? I find myself instructing (teacher talk) & then moving around 1/2
A4: Time, and not being adaptive becomes a barrier without good planning, DI and PL need to be flexible, but still planned
Thank you . Sounds interesting - Sat research!
every guide has spent time leading others down the path - it needs to be both/and to meet student need
A4. Takes a whole team approach and at times, it is difficult to find that team. Have to find those willing to do what it takes
Great idea! I have never thought of that, use for a review but going to try this! Thanks!
IME, some need the sage b/c they do not know how to handle choices or do not really understand the material.
And a test score. As long as we choose to evaluate people & students on 1 score this will count 2 b a barrier
A4: Time is never in our favor, but I try to facilitate class experiences that allow me to work w/small groups/individuals often.
A4: Whereas,if we design class based on feedback, goal setting, reflection, deeper learning can take place & it's more Ss centered.
... or formatively assessing to gauge & develop understanding of students, & to shape my teaching. 2/2
Great to remember this! differentiation is NOT individualized instruction, but getting kids what they need! https://t.co/KsVXk0M9IA
A3: Differentiation is scaffolding instruction and working with small groups with similar abilities.
A4: Mandates and "non-negotiables" 😞😞😞 https://t.co/PI7Vr4uEG1
Q4: What are the barriers you encounter when "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"?
A4: Time! Solution- work together as a school to breed a culture of differentiation
A4: My barrier is the game. Managing cases, classes, data, and keeping everyone engaged & happy. It can wear on me at times.
Some kids ACT like they don't want to be reached. We must push past the apathy and attitude. https://t.co/rxmtzIewE3
Q4: What are the barriers you encounter when "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"?
A4: System is not set up for that way. Push to standardize- gradebooks, common assessments, schedules, common lessons...
Windows all around and open front on tent...willing to give it a try, willing to take the learning risk!
Thank you for the link! Can't wait to explore
Some1 shared they were going to print out the info graphic/have it at their side for planning
A4: Time...just not enough of it. You need to maximize every minute w/ Ss. That doesn't mean overschedule,. It means thoughtful.
A4: Time constraints...but it is worth every minute!
A4: Current theme: TIME. Next question, how can we restructure school day for time, learning, health balance
A4 One word: time! It's the most valuable resource. Learning to make the best of it in and out of the class is key
A3: Differentiation goes beyond varying the tasks and supporting devices - it also includes the different relationships we build
My husband loves it because it clears out things at the house! Until we need those buckets for something outside :)
A4: Trust is the biggest barrier that cannot be rushed. S's have to give it on their schedule not yours.
Don't miss out on opp to present at an amazing conference filled with forward thinking educators https://t.co/wYtxZlVZxv

After losing the WH 3x in a row (including 2016), have establishment GOP learned their lesson?
A4: Lack of access to mobile technology; lack of flexible space are barriers
A4 I could use more conversation time w/SPED teachers to help them guide Ss into more inquiry, w/less frontloading of content
A4:Feeling that you have follow the districts pacing guide, as opposed to the students pacing.
what gets space in our classes sends messages - from ambient bias to value of kids' own work
a4 time... Length of school day, interruptions, other misc stuff, just time! I think year round school is better than long summer
Hmmm…not sure what that would look like, exactly. I suppose it’s possible! :-)
That's an interesting way to look at it...
We blame time, but the reason time is an issue is b/c Admin & Brd of Ed still see content as priority instead of creating learners
we are looking into incorporating more of the activities this year. Ss loved seeing the connections.
A3 I think consistent conferencing helps with differentiation. Lets you know where Ss are at & what they need to move forward
We ALL need to get over ourselves ... from time to time. https://t.co/vhxxQx0HxB
A4: My 1st barrier is always my preconceived notions of what school/learning looks like. Getting over myself & keeping kids first.
Yes! Plan more effective w/ interdisciplinary units will only benefit students. Won't see learning in isolation.
yes! I am in a super supportive school district but you can't outrun the clock.
I heard great things about SeeSaw from some Ts I met at They said it was a game changer.
A4: Barriers can often be the different energy levels of Ss. What are some good ideas to handle different energy levels?
? Ahead of Hillary Clinton In LA Times "Daybreak" Poll, Erasing 4-pt Deficit from 8/13/2016 https://t.co/bUoJTxPOJl
A4: All about mindset! You have to want to do what's best for Ss and dig deep sometimes. It's not easy, but def worth it!
I couldn't find the original source where I saw this but definitely powerful tool for it
A4 Biases over which kids can succeed create barriers to learning which much be examined.
A4: At the start of the school year not knowing the abilities of each student. Then time and class size are the greatest barriers
Stop separating students!! It's about teaching the same in multiple ways to reach all https://t.co/acQ3FHjfGu
A3: Differentiation is scaffolding instruction and working with small groups with similar abilities.
Math/Science is natural. A T who combines Math/Science/Humanities, now there is a teacher to reckon with
A4: time, resources...knowing HOW to reach each student. Persevering to do this can be a hurdle for some...it's hard!
Excellent choice! Excited to hear her this spring!
agreed. Getting the timing down as to when to jump between the two is a constant struggle. Relationships help.
A4: working with Ss with exceptionalities biggest barriers are time and my own patience.🖖
A4: Another struggle: willingness to fail. Is it okay to mess up and try again (and again)? Ok with your admin? Ok with you and Ss?
A4: many of our barriers are perceived, not real. There's enough time if we use it differently; enough space if we make it.
A4) Time; Resources to design individual learning; building a teacher collaboration atmosphere
A4: Time is such a barrier, so we have to find ways to be as effective with it as we can to support students
Kids who want to be reached the most are sometimes the hardest to reach.
A4: Barriers: fixed mindsets, 'my' priorities taking first place over needs of students, resistance to change.
Agreed Julie. We need to figure out how to make more time! LOL..we'd be millionaires! :-)
A4: Barriers as a coach, T's that don't like giving up control for a more S's centered class or trying to int. new tech.
You are the best:) And I plan to share back as I make my stuff this year. Thinking some no-textbook PDFs, playlists, etc
A4 Time, resources, standardized tests the usual! BUT changing my attitude to keep reaching my Ss!
Yes! Traditional grading & the time-constrained model are indeed big barriers...but they don't have to be!
I will take a look. thanks for sharing.
Yes, but I think that's individualizing instruction. Think there is a difference between the two.
A4 Student absences are a barrier in my school. Hoping to get ideas from Twitter this year to help reduce this.
A4 Classroom interruptions, standardized testing, etc...
Yes , we find it powerful to watch Ss take ownership over their own learning and growth https://t.co/lASlZeyKkp
A3: Every S is taking a different, customized path to maximize their growth based on what they care about. https://t.co/sPbEDfFB8Q
A4: We have to remember that ultimately ... it's not about the data ... it's about the kids. https://t.co/sZs4OAmbSX
TRUE! https://t.co/drtLFa1RFe
A4: At the start of the school year not knowing the abilities of each student. Then time and class size are the greatest barriers
Leaving to open the building for some incredible Ts. Look forward to reading tweets later!!
A4: A teacher can never justify not differentiating. If you we to make a difference, you find a way
A4: Get Ss to believe in their own mastery of content & proudly share it! Ss block them, when I'm cheering "You got it!"
A3- conferring everyday in Readers' & Writers' Workshop is the best way to get to know your readers & writers
A4 effective differentiation is really challenging-leaders need to let teachers know they understand -acknowledge it's hard work
We have 10 min built it between class plus a 20 break in AM. Ss more focused and w/ more energy in class https://t.co/edTluJC7sp
A4: Current theme: TIME. Next question, how can we restructure school day for time, learning, health balance
Thank you...more "stuff" does not translate into more learning.
A4:Being realistic. Diff. Instr. for every S is an impossible task for most classrooms, unless you have a time machine. If so,share
these are the kids that need us most. Also are the cases where max impact can happen.
A2: my explanation station wall. Where we collected ideas, analyzed data, modeled & made thinking public. https://t.co/Zg4V4JsoTN
When we get to the deep end w/ Free Inquiry we've finally unleashed the power of tech in the classroom
A4: staffing levels are also a huge barrier in spec Ed.
Q5: What advice can you give a fellow educator when it comes to "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"? https://t.co/PRXOOJTNh4
Differentiation & Personalised Learning requires a long term vision. Too many blogs on one lesson wonders which is ineffective.
This! Everything is easier when we collaborate. https://t.co/tX7oZaTPLt
A4: Time! Solution- work together as a school to breed a culture of differentiation
And this is IT! https://t.co/9dFLbOFi8j
A4: A teacher can never justify not differentiating. If you we to make a difference, you find a way
A4: Time of course- also getting parents involved on the same page- building that relationship & helping it continue at home.
NIce to see the time built into the schedule!
A4:Worried about your own comfort level, instead of the students comfort and learning.
A5) We all must understand that every student has a different story... We teach the students not the subject.
A4. Focus efforts to eliminate worksheet mentality by being lead learner in school, especially in teacher PD.
Q4 The only true barrier is Do I know my students well enough? Brain activity isn't visible so the hypothesis must be tentative
Ah, gotcha. Generally, I see that as teacher-centered, rather than learning-centered.
A4: many perceive there is a lack of time to reach all Ss - I believe it is either in the culture of the building or it isn't
Let me know if you want to talk about some of these questions. https://t.co/43xJJVGdng
A4 I could use more conversation time w/SPED teachers to help them guide Ss into more inquiry, w/less frontloading of content
they don't! Set up a system of feedback, Ss can measure growth and collaboratively "grade" themselves. DREAM BIG!
agreed. Have done projects on favorite presidents, graphed deaths in wars, national debt.
A4. A huge barrier/wall to reach every student is the level of expectancy other adults have imposed. Tracking is toxic.
I think biases are what's hurting a lot of kids unfortunately 😞 https://t.co/hAGv29zHOo
A4 Biases over which kids can succeed create barriers to learning which much be examined.
I think its also building a culture that enables students to reach each other and learn together as well.
but students know what separation means...creates stigma and unnecessary angst
A school’s teachers have to work together to create a culture whereby the norm is for students to attend classes
so much of the dynamic, individual instruction is facilitated by devices?
A4 barriers = standards-only focus on learning, not enuf slow-time to "cook" learning, tests as 1-D learning measure ..
Yep! https://t.co/RaCQzM1USV
A4: Time is a barrier. Traditional grading systems are a barrier. Ss for so long have always though about end grade, not process.
.A4. Truly differentiated lessons ...where options exist in content, process, and product require a healthy amount of planning TIME
Agree 100%. I don't need more time or space. Just the authority to use it how I see fit.
That definitely is more of a time restraint. I was def thinking of 9+ month classrooms.
It depends on the population of the class. Personalized learning can include ind., small group, whole group, etc.
I love the workshop model. Works great in social studies!
Yes! It's up to me to be the spark that helps the team form and grow. That's an essential part of teacher leadership!
A4: GM! Jumping in... Don't view as barriers to reaching & teaching Ss...View as hills/mountains you have strength to climb.
A4: If I don't build the relationship, S don't trust me enough to relax into learning and discovery.
A4:Placing so much emphasis on teaching, instead of learning.
A4 Labeling kids, sorting them, ranking them--all barriers to reaching potential.
A5: Reach those Ss who are easier to be reached as training for those who are tough to reach. Don't become frustrated
A4 Personal barrier is starting off with the best intentions and getting caught up in the same ole, same ole. Stay on cutting edge.
A5 Build relationships first, give every day your all, meet each child where he/she is, always remember that
A5: The struggle is real. Never give up, do your best, and communicate goals. Students appreciate real, honest, dedicated T's
A4 Standardized testing. We don't do any & it frees Ts up to follow S needs.
A4: chipping away at the wall the Ss have created from yrs of struggling in math. Learning escalates when we break this down.
A4: Many things can get in the way of reaching all kids. Time is an issue, of course. Facilities can be a barrier too. Mindset too?
Agree! It is all about who you work with, working with my teammates allows me to find ways to reach all Ss
Grades and worksheets do not motivate like a desire to seek to understand and a love for learning
Is it possible to reach every learner without using principles? I say, No. What do you think?
A5: Make all decisions based on Ss & their needs. The minute you veer from that or do what is easiest, you've lost.
Go for it and let me know! 😊
Differentiation takes LESS time. Group students by quick form assess & respond to needs in small group. The student IS the LP.
IT certainly can help but also our own pedagogy when it comes to things like Homework
Thanks for sharing this! I shall share with affected parties. :)
A5. My Edu Advice for "Reaching and Teaching Every Student" would be to Observe, Document, & Report all Good&Bad to Admin & Home .
That's key. I try NOT to listen to what other Ts say before the year starts. I meet my students as "tabula rasa"
Read MAthematical Mindsets by and you'll find excellent ways to break walls in both Ss and Ts.
A5: Make sure your CONTENT aligns w/ the PROCESS to produce the PRODUCT Ss are capable & knowledgable to create.
Personalized learning includes an element of student control. Yes, all three can be in the same class.
A5 Realize that there is only so much time in class and 1 of you. Use the power Internet to help you diversify.
So true! Proud that my school has moved to a 100% competency model this year! Focus on the growth and not the grade.
A4: time with Ss, time to develop the right materials, more time 2 collab w/ Ts 2 share resources/mtrls 2 not reinvent the wheel
A5: always remember to teach students FIRST. Teach content second.
A5: keep going forward. Build relationships with your Ss to learn what they truly need. Remember that each S needs you!
yes! perfectionist drive is an enemy of learning, a messy, dynamic, recursive process https://t.co/vv9wkGlAwY
sometimes its the lack of perfection that gives evidence of the
A4: spend time creating lessons that engage principles of and you will have spent time reaching all
A5 Get to know all Ss that first week, make connections, work with other Ts to get ideas to reach all Ss, take risks
A5: Take more time than you think to connect. They will have a much better time and learn a lot more if they feel connected to you
A5: My advice is FOCUS ON RELATIONSHIPs FIRST. Get to know your Ss beyond academics. Give them a glimpse into yourself as people.
I think it's been great for Ss and Ts. Gives time to decompress and refocus. Plus use time to get to know the Ss
I'd love to hear more about this shift. Did you blog about it?
Increasing student buy-in. Creating warm, safe environment where all S's feel welcomed & valued helps. Good luck!
Agreed. I don't need to "watch out for" anyone.
I agree but difference between differentiation, individualized, and personal. A room can include all.
Super important to make thinking public.
A5: focus on knowing your Ss. Content will come.
A5. Be present. Be mindful. Take risks. Oh...and LOVE your students, especially the ones that make it difficult.
A5: Remember, relationships are the foundation of all learning. In order to reach ALL Ss, you must have the relationship.
A5: Don't skimp on the time you take getting to know your ss and don't give up on the ones who resist, they need you most!!
I love it! I find that when we trust Ss they'll actually want to be trustworthy
A5: Begin by getting to know your Ss, build relationships & CR community, give Ss V&C & them the tools for learning and move over!
A5: Being flexible and willing to relinquish control. It's okay to let Ss lead the learning
A5: Allow yourself to step back and let students lead. Often times they have the best insights into how to support them.
BOOM!!! 👍👏🔥 https://t.co/nShdPymBsp
Grades and worksheets do not motivate like a desire to seek to understand and a love for learning
Reaching students requires a response from them. Teachers don't have 100% control over it.
my understand of the importance of feedback and reflection for Ss.
A5)know your Ss; work side by side not in front; understand their lrning needs; plan individualized lrning not lrning for the mass
A5 Working with other Ts on your team allows for you to divide and conquer to create activities, lessons etc to reach all Ss
Definitely. Gets all involved Ps, Ss, and Ts. Open communication.
A5: Listen to and observe your students carefully, with real intent and purpose, responding accordingly.
A5: It's not about you. We're here to serve Ss. Be flexible, caring. Vary instructional opportunities. https://t.co/nrQgC7lbo0
Q5: What advice can you give a fellow educator when it comes to "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"? https://t.co/PRXOOJTNh4
I also think being honest about the struggle to allow them to become partners in learning & help us as we help them.
A5: We need to seek to understand the behaviors of our students - step into their shoes and try to see what school looks like
A5: Listen. Take time to listen to students when they are with you.
Yes! Cuz that's how humans in the real word have solved problems for centuries!
If you have any more activities to connect history and math, please share. I love history.
A5: Easy. Advice to edus re: need to teach & reach all learners: Remember that it's not about you. You have a higher calling.
I more than agree. I will shout it for all to hear! https://t.co/aWYNtMEIcC
A4: many of our barriers are perceived, not real. There's enough time if we use it differently; enough space if we make it.
a4 we break down barriers by learning how 2learn, conferencing 4 target setting, & building on strengths (aka superpowers)
A5: Try in all ways to send the message to Ss that you believe in them. You are in their corner. I have 180+ days to make a diff.
A5: Share & work with other Ts! My school has Spec. ed. Ts work together every other week after school.
Reading whitepapers on network security and ransomware, studying for my second Cisco cert, etc. Sorry to miss this morning.
A5: My advice is it's not a race, but a journey. Be patient and stay focused on the goal.
Agreed, but I do think time plays a part. It isn't the sole factor, & you nailed it with culture and beliefs.
A5: see beyond your classroom walls - we grow as a building & community when we foster growth for ALL Ss. Also, differentiate more
Taking risks! Trying something new that will be beneficial to all students! Something I need to remember as a veteran T
A4: Time, of course - Some Ss need more time to get mastery than others. It's so important to give them the time they need.
Hi All! Amy from MI joining very late. The toddler alarm was sleeping on the job again today.
Very true! Digital portfolios provide the evidence of DOK. Great tool!
A5: listen and learn from your students - start with relationship building
A5: Get to know your students' interests/hobbies/activities outside the classroom prove you truly care https://t.co/NDCpATFzlW

Great point! https://t.co/635Cq8FF6o
A4: many perceive there is a lack of time to reach all Ss - I believe it is either in the culture of the building or it isn't
. standards create get "it" done mentality -when kids want 2 go deeper "move along, this isn't the learning U R looking 4"
Moving past engaging to empowerment! This! https://t.co/ADJHooq2ml
A5: Being flexible and willing to relinquish control. It's okay to let Ss lead the learning
A4 School climate & mindset of staff are potential barriers. Need to nurture both to ensure they are on the right track.
Well said! https://t.co/xxjk4SKBd5
A5: Take more time than you think to connect. They will have a much better time and learn a lot more if they feel connected to you
How are the parents handling that? Big pushback in IL from Ps that don't understand Standards Based
Good one. There is nothing wrong with wanting comfort, but it can't be your # 1 priority.
A4: dealing with the Ss that do not want to be challenged. Do not want to struggle. Want learning to be easy.
Q5 Go out and see where your students live!! Do home visits if possible. YOU will learn a lot. Check on students when absent.

I planned on seeing "Birth of a Nation", but I now I will just find a good book on NatTurner instead.
How are the parents handling that? Big pushback in IL from Ps who don't understand Standards Based
Time plays a part, though it should never be solely used as an excuse either
A5 Take time to get to know Ss by asking questions, listening, & observing during instruction and socialization. Connect with them!
A5: Greet them daily. Smile. Stand up straight. Get parents involved early and often in a positive way!
Feedback is a huge part of this process, in my opinion! Love this!
A4 trying to facilitate student learning in data-driven "system" focused more on measuring than nurturing https://t.co/9KzCmlWeZ0
A5: start small with your approach...try strategies that benefit the most at first. Key is getting to know your Ss- it's a must.
It also requires strategies & systems, which Im grateful my mentor trained me in https://t.co/48gD3gi6Fw
Differentiation & Personalised Learning requires a long term vision. Too many blogs on one lesson wonders which is ineffective.
Which is right: Based on student need vs. based on whatever is the most convenient? We all know the answer. https://t.co/YLk9LA2xmy
A5: Make all decisions based on Ss & their needs. The minute you veer from that or do what is easiest, you've lost.
A5: Relationships matter. Content is easy when a Ss trusts & respects you. Ss know when Ts love what they do - more than a job
A5: Step away from the textbook, worksheets, last year's lesson & all else that enables a one-size-fits-all mindset to continue.
A5 (2): We create resources in a in , help write IEPs, invite gen. ed. Ts to add input, it's revolutionized us.
Love it! https://t.co/Cok5Q0ojL3
A5: My advice is it's not a race, but a journey. Be patient and stay focused on the goal.
I always have to remind myself of this, but when I do, it's always better for Ss!

Just joined and lost in the sea of people giving quality advises and answers
A5: Don't feel like it can be done in one day. Diff is a process of trial and error. Learn from your failures share the success!
A5: Be patient, there will be fails, learn from them, normalize them, learn with your Ss, explore their needs and nurture them
a5 don't be afraid 2read up on or classroom management! Ask ?s &observe! & ask 2 be observed or video yourself!
I've heard of Admin taking entire faculty on bus tour of the community. Love it!
A4: Building trust with students and parents and showing them you are genuine in your goals. Building rapport is really step 1.
Right! Many principal friends interested! Imagine doing work anywhere in the school? Be present! https://t.co/zZEFSOyOhL
The first thing I do at the start of every school year and maintain throughout the year! So important
A5 Find a few Ts who are kindred spirits for support, encouragement, laughs
Heard this quote at a workshop: "Go slow to grow fast." Take time. Slow down. Build relationships.
A5 Sit back, watch and listen. Everything you need is sitting in front (or along side) of you.
A5 Connect before you correct; listen before you lecture; remind kids that what they can’t do, they simply can’t do yet.
So far so good. We've been very proactive & transparent in our communications and input with Ss & Ps.
A5 ALWAYS error on the side of what u think is best for kids...always...
does it have to include snakes? I do not like snakes...
A5 Start with empathy and then don't let the pressure to "move on" stop you from taking the time to get deep, meaningful leaning
A5: get to know Ss from day 1, cultivate positive and trusting relationships, overcome time barriers by collaborating with other Ts
A5: Mistakes are inevitable on both sides. Be ready to hit the "reset" button.
A5: Smile, be welcoming, available, consistent. Make learning interesing. Bottom line would you like to be in your class?
A5: don't "beat yourself up" if you don't reach every student. Be present, make the effort and be authentic.🖖
This is so true! But as admin, I find Ts are often locked into this mindset as well. Hard one to break
generation: All of the people born and living at about the same time
Essential truth! : "Being flexible and willing to relinquish control. It's okay to let Ss lead the learning
Let them know you are there for them! You are in their corner! So important!
A5: Make each student feel valued. Spend the extra time to get to know what makes each of them unique
Does anyone have any resources for PD for SRBI or RTI tier 1 PD for our leadership team they would share?
but be transparents from the start. Build that relationship.
A5 To reach & teach every student, instructional language matters, build agency through your words and empower Ss - be dialogic
YES! Great ways 2 build relationships You would <3 this blog post by a MA principal https://t.co/62Uxj2mKA6 https://t.co/A5wOq6tYqT

Barrier seems to be our own beliefs about education. Open our minds. Be a change agent
Great this morning. Have to run. Happy new school year!
A5: Take time to build an honest rapport with ALL of your students. By building their trust you can engage in deeper learning.
A5. Teach students, not content. Respond to your students' needs: academically, socially, and emotionally.
I thought biggest problem w/ it was communication breakdown between school & stakeholders
A5: Be open minded to different approaches to teaching and learning working for individual students
A5 It's possible to co-create learning with students in the classroom instead of 'delivering' instruction.
I like this quote
https://t.co/EbsgLRTDga
Heard this quote at a workshop: "Go slow to grow fast." Take time. Slow down. Build relationships.
A5 Advice #2: R u bored in ur class? Think what they r then. Make ur class the place they don't want to leave
Teachers are my heroes! I can never say it enough times. Your work matters!!!! https://t.co/NdYg4drQFG
A5: The struggle is real. Never give up, do your best, and communicate goals. Students appreciate real, honest, dedicated T's
Hey Chris, how are you? Are you feeling ready for grade 1?
A5: If S's leave school less curious than when we started, we've failed them." something to think about
A5 LOVE these guidelines. https://t.co/zpG9VZnAAH
A5: Smile, be welcoming, available, consistent. Make learning interesing. Bottom line would you like to be in your class?

Yes! If something needs to be moved until tomorrow it is OK! Hard to let go but this quote is great!
A5: Support your Ss outside of the classroom. Show up to their game, recital, play. It validates you both! They'll love you more!
Foundation for everything we do: It's all about building relationships & making connections. Students have to know that we care.
It also helps enable a true cross-curricular approach to our PBL process. Amazing to see the connections!
A5: Spend time getting to know students. Build relationships. Create a community of collaborators.
Good point. We often get so hung up on the negatives, we fail to see the good we're still doing.
Yes ! Applies to all parts of school. If it works more 4 adults than kids we're doing it wrong https://t.co/pSnOfxlKpb
This advice is golden. https://t.co/F0MDEHSLZy
A5: get to know Ss from day 1, cultivate positive and trusting relationships, overcome time barriers by collaborating with other Ts
A5. The first thing you need to teach, model, and practice is independence and ownership of learning.
A4. All depends on my decision to reflect honestly on what I am actually doing for my students. Then take risks-baby steps are ok
A5 Don't be too hard on yourself. Give it your best every day and focus on small victories instead of what you didn't achieve yet
and that's where the tool, such as comes into play.
A5: Aim for giving kids responsibility for their own learning.
Only if the Ss provide a habitat for them in their zoo. You know, student choice and all LOL
my husband does too! Until my coffee table disappeared ;)
A5: Talk less. Smile more.
So important to take time to listen and understand learning from students' perspectives.
A5:Try your best, continue to grow and develop engaging lessons. It's fine if you hit bumps along the way. https://t.co/xDdZat7Yxe
Never pass up a learning opportunity. Tomorrow's another day to pick up where your left off on the "planned" lesson!
Come to their band concert too! ;) https://t.co/eQq38cYc73
A5: Support your Ss outside of the classroom. Show up to their game, recital, play. It validates you both! They'll love you more!
A5: Seek out other teachers - share experiences and strategies of what works and does not - never be too proud not to seek help
I asked myself that a lot this year! A trying, busy week but Friday planned some fun activities made up for it!
To reach each and every student at middle level, use the STW rubric to improve school and think globally about your kids.
BE PRESENT!!! Enough said! https://t.co/CXr7O92xz7
A5: don't "beat yourself up" if you don't reach every student. Be present, make the effort and be authentic.🖖
Wow! Simple and powerful rules to teach by. This is going up next to my desk as a reminder! https://t.co/CQupp0GBKh
A5 Connect before you correct; listen before you lecture; remind kids that what they can’t do, they simply can’t do yet.
A5: Laugh with your Ss, empathize with them, build them up as people, they will grow as learners!
A school based on punishment and compliance pushes kids out. A school built upon relationships pulls kids in.
Great discussion! Thank you all for being a part of my PLN :)
You'd be amazed (or maybe you wouldn't)at how many people still want to do what is convenient. I cant settle for that.
A5 1) You don't teach (Fill Subject) you teach Students 2) Take the time to know them rather than dive into course in 1st wk
I needed to 'hear' that! Still nervous! 😊 Thanks!
Those are great questions! Thank you!
Men can use no better arms to drive away the devil, than prayer and the sign of the cross. - Saint Teresa
A5 prioritize listening through every one of your senses - kids will tell you what you need to know if we kidwatch and kidlisten
A1 Making every student feel like a vital piece of the classroom puzzle while also paying attention to their unique needs and goals
Why it is so important to also build that solid relationship with all stakeholders. It takes a community.
A5 Advice #3: Never do the same the lesson the same way every year. Always look for ways to get better at ur craft
Love this! It is all about taking risks and showing Ss you are a risk taker and that at times we make mistakes
Don't use time as an excuse. We all prioritize. You change culture in 30 second increments. Every interaction counts.
Sounds like me. I just got hired to teach middle school- grade 6/8 😀😱
YES!!! https://t.co/ktkKaulQMz
To reach each and every student at middle level, use the STW rubric to improve school and think globally about your kids.
Yes! When I hear talk of punitive grading practices (outside of school-mandated ones,) this is what I think about.
That's definitely part of school culture that know no boundaries. Then Ts complain when Ss don't retain content. Ugh!
A5: do your research. Action research will investigate your problems and try to solve them. Research- based inquiry is powerful
But that we learn from our mistakes and try again!
So important w relationship building! Showing you're invested in Ss goes a long way!
A5 Don’t confuse compliance with engagement.
Have to head out! Great chat this morning! Thanks everyone!
Christina, how's the book coming along?
Yes, ! My mentor mantra: "It's not about what you teach, it's about what they learn" https://t.co/KpvD5dlxbd
A5) We all must understand that every student has a different story... We teach the students not the subject.
Q6: Provide resources & links for fellow educators so they can enhance their ability in "Reaching and Teaching Every Student"
I get bored when I do that, & if Im bored, odds are my Ss will be too
Thanks for the important reminder about laughter! 😄😄😄
My advice is to get Ss to ask interesting questions. Then see, which can we use math/science to answer.
You're getting a stand up movable desk? would be interested. Bring your office to the classrooms!
I was 5th, but now I am 6th grade SS. It's a tool that indispensable to me at this point.
every moment may not feel like Xmas morning but we have got to remember that we teach children first not content.
Definitely! Giving up control is so important but seems to scare many Ts
A1: it is important to set realistic goals and communicate openly as well as to respect eachother and listen to eachother
What I'm stuck on is: I have topics to teach, but my Ss should use their own avenues to learn the topics. That's choice.
ya, I sometimes dwell too much on "could I have done more"?
Thank you for a wonderful way to start my weekend. You all are awesome! 😊
Hey Tomas -- for sure -- some Ss have learn thru exp. NOT to trust -- we have to be intentional to earn it
A5: Seek out the practices that are ineffective and get rid of them! We need feedback on what is not good instruction
we ask "what do kids want to make? That drives our maker resource decisions"
Thinking about making that work with a bundle of standards. Talk about how to reach them , voice & choice
A5 Relationships is the key to reaching students; get to know them; their culture; their home environment etc; invest in them
A6 Just finished Andrew Solomon’s Far From the Tree - sure helped me think about kids who face hard challenges.
Often as simple as asking "What can I do for you today?"
A5 Love your Ss. Talk to them. Teach them to reflect on their thinking. Laugh. Celebrate. Savor each day. https://t.co/a02ITNtJNo
Q5: What advice can you give a fellow educator when it comes to "Reaching & Teaching Every Student"? https://t.co/PRXOOJTNh4
My best advice for reaching students is to think of them like family. That puts every thing you do in perspective.
You are so right! I have no time for that! Step up your Ss deserve it Do your job! Frustrating!
Congratulations and best of luck for a great school year!
Can it be that time already?
LAST QUESTION

Anyone got a cool+well paid job goddammit?
A6: Go full in a competency learning framework. If you do it, and do it well, you will never go back! https://t.co/FAHijJWjyv
A6: I feel the ability Ts have in to individually assign work to Ss really helps in blended environment.
what a great idea - stay permanently out of the office!
Exactly! There's so much in their little worlds that we can't possible see all their greatness in an hr/day! https://t.co/mK2uk8Gq0z
Absolutely, seeing your Ss in their entirety. Not just your student but the whole person they are!

I also think that if they do misbehave, it's not the end of the world, just a great teaching moment.
I know I needed help from the art teacher with tangrams. I can not draw a straight line...
Yes! Ss pick up on everything! You can't fool them. If you genuinely care they will be inspired. https://t.co/PbKRs3iY8L
A5: Relationships matter. Content is easy when a Ss trusts & respects you. Ss know when Ts love what they do - more than a job
Yes! Reminds me when Ss learned how to invite others to events in Spanish & asked me to go to their game.
A5: Never give up. Something that worked one day may not work the next. Be flexible and positive. Take the time to know your Ss.

So good!!!! https://t.co/iEO0pzALcH
Yes, ! My mentor mantra: "It's not about what you teach, it's about what they learn" https://t.co/KpvD5dlxbd
A5) We all must understand that every student has a different story... We teach the students not the subject.
We need to collaborate to make it happen. Record lessons Watch & analyze w/ partner. Ask for more feedback from Ss
And Google Apps helped me reach more Ss than ever.
Thank you Satchatters, as always this has been relevant, fun, full of great ideas and resources! Go and reach & teach every student

aA4 Barriers to reaching students; preconceived ideas of who they are; TIME; difficult to balance differentiating & moving ahead
Agreed—I think there is a difference! I think the answer is…it depends on students’ needs! :-)

Great private FB group for teachers to share and collaborate together. Cool community to be a part of! https://t.co/a8k39ZnZMy
More tables-high tables, low tables, Ss can sit on the floor-cushions, stools. Not the tradition desk and chair
