#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Tyler from MI! APHUGE, APUSH, WHAP, and Co-Mod of #worldgeochat I am grateful for my family, students, and the fact that next Friday starts holiday break!
Hey #worldgeochat folks. James from KY here. Ready to learn about annotating maps today. Will be a first time for me. Oh and finally got out of the walking boot today.
John Honish, 7th grade SS at Waunakee Community Middle School in WI, grateful for my wife and all she takes care of, my kids (offspring and classroom varieties) and the playoff bound Crimson Tide! #RTR#bama#worldgeochat
Ed, 7th grade global studies teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. So grateful to have a job I love, a family I adore, and to be having an awesome 2nd year with our new curriculum #worldgeochat
Steven Price from Michigan, 7th grade Social Studies teacher who is greatly for the opportunity to teach a subject where I get to learn new things in a district that I love #worldgeochat
I'm Joe Schmidt a pk-16 social studies specialist in Maine. I'm grateful for the amazing Twitter friends from #worldgeochat that I've gotten to meet in real life and even more grateful that they supporting me for NCSS election. #votejoencss (shameless plug!)
Anna Waddell from middle Georgia-7th grade social studies-so grateful for my crazy crew of coworkers who are dedicated to making it through the next week and a half until break! We lean on each other so much! f #worldgeochat
#WorldGeoChat Iโm Jennifer and Iโm the Curriculum Coordinator for a rural district in Central Maine. We are studying Visible Learning this year so Iโm excited to join you. I am grateful for my happy & healthy daughters๐
A1: anything that provides additional focus or POE to a canvas, text, or space. We do a lot of annotating when we study gentrification and central place theory. #worldgeochat
A1
purposefully analyzing, asking questions and making inferences about the info that the map is showing. Asking "How does this help further my understanding of _________?"
#worldgeochat
A1
Annotating a map looks like whatever students want it to look like.
I have Ss write question, connections, things they noticed, in the margins. Whatever makes the map make more sense to them!
#worldgeochat
A1- Colors, symbols, and lots of writing! My students develop their own legends and assign different colors to different physical features. The goal is to need more โค๏ธ๐งก๐๐๐๐than you have in a basic box! #worldgeochat
A1 #worldgeochat depends on medium onlineTOUCH this image: Land Use in our Community https://t.co/oJhSkvUVXS
On paper, sticky notes, highlighters, circles, strings
Just like I tell my readers to annotate their text and mark it up I also want my geography students to mark up their maps and charts. @geography_kes shared this and I can't wait to use it with my students #worldgeochat#geographyteacher
Amy Walker from Olathe, Kansas. After teaching 5th grade for 10 years, this is my first year teaching 7th grade SS. Iโm thankful for @eric_falls who has already taught me so much about world geography. #worldgeochat
A1: Annotating maps looks different for the individuals. I am always impressed while doing mapwork as a class, how some students will respond differently. Some will circle where I would put a star, others will trace a feature. Annotating possibilities r endless! #worldgeochat
Ken from Western Oregon Univ & Center for Geography Education in Oregon. Checking in to #worldgeochat. Going to be in & out as I help my daughter w/ homework
A! Annotating maps in Google #MyMaps is one of my fav ways! So much rich content can be added via this user-friendly, student accessible tool! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat having students be interactive with maps for many reasons especially with stickies always feel like successful lessons. Conversations are always great and entry point for every student.
A2: We ask students to annotate maps to think about what they are doing for a moment instead of acting upon memorization. What connections can we make to this map #worldgeochat
A2-Hands on learning! Plus I want them to take ownership in what they produce. Maps aren't just to relegated to an atlas or @googleearth; plus I find annotating maps to be the equivalent of math practice problems. They need to work it to learn it! ๐บ๏ธ๐๏ธ#worldgeochat
A1 Depends on what is the goals are in using the map & type of map & tool, but could include making a legend, color coding, marginalia, pin drops, (i.e. My Maps), etc. #worldgeochat
A2 To help add context to data and other pieces of information, to create connections between places, and summarize regional characteristics. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat is about to get crazy with Q2 & 3 dropping at the same time!
A3
Google MyMaps is great to annotate maps. Drop and pin and talk about what you see, think, and wonder there!
A3
This year we have used my maps in every unit to explore physical geography and systems. Creating layers of info and data to locate and describe places and regions of the world.
#worldgeochat
A2 #worldgeochat for the Ss it is so that they can track their thinking and make the map their own. For Ts this "out loud" thinking allows us to see what they may not be able to explain otherwise.
A3-I'm still old school in that I like students to phsycially annotate on a paper map that can be used later as notes. I need to put some more time into learning new tools such as Google My Maps and other platforms. #worldgeochat
A3 I'm a My Maps junkie. I really enjoy the collaboration feature. That's NOT to say we don't use regular paper and pencils for annotations, but My Maps fits the need #worldgeochat
A3: Canโt wait to see these answers! I feel like I have been pretty basic this year! I love giving students an opportunity to show what they know to the class though! Having students come up to annotate is a fav! Even through error, it is worthwhile! #worldgeochat
A3: Google map features (pin plots, distance) ESRI demographic data, voting districts, identification of food deserts, colleges, and universities. I am diving further into physical geo though, clean water access. #worldgeochat
A3 I had no smartboard for 2 years and had a touch screen tv with no drawing tools instead. Now I realize how much I missed a smartboard when kids draw what theyโre seeing or label things in front of everyone #worldgeochat
A3: My SmartBoard. On the DAILY. I use the ink tool to draw and point and highlight. Coupled with Google Earth and https://t.co/YzI6vgUGB1 I am a wizard. :) Today I recapped the story of the Cold War with a map annotation. My SmBd is my homeboy. #worldgeochat
A3) looking forward to using the new @googlemaps features! Other than that we use the typical supplies but sometimes I ask Ss to just draw a map freehand using only a pencil โ๏ธ #worldgeochat
A3 we use awesome screenshot to take portions of satellite imagery off google maps and mark it up. Especially to show where our settlements will be in our escape from the zombie apocalypse ๐งโโ๏ธ๐งโโ๏ธ#worldgeochat
A3 Google My Maps is great for this for students to demonstrate understanding of concepts, make connections w/ geographic concepts, & tell a story through their annotations #worldgeochat
A3 Something that I played with a little bit never got around to developing a lesson with is https://t.co/B4UkA3hWYH
Comparing data, asking questions about what things are where they are etc
#worldgeochat
A4 #worldgeochat Maps ( and most images) have a lot going on with them (don't always have margins or spaces) which can make the annotating difficult or messy. (PS don't forget to #votejoencss if you are an @NCSSNetwork member! Voting is open!)
A3: I'm a fan of @google#mymaps and #tourbuilder too. I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas about using old fashioned paper maps in new ways. Or activities/questions that prompt deeper thinking. #worldgeochat

A4-My students sometimes struggle with matching up a digital image & paper image that may not look identical. Absent country borders can really throw them for a loop! I have also been pretty particular about the website resources I want them to use. #toomanychoices#worldgeochat
I haven't been able to use My Maps as frequently this year as in years past with new teaching responsibilities but really need to integrate it and use those new tools. #worldgeochat
A4) anyone else struggling with differentiating between land and water? That part can take some time, but again it comes down to familiarity and context for the Ss #worldgeochat
A4 I no longer make students memorize maps, so having students know where countries are on a map can be a challenge. Yet, @playfanschool has helped a ton with kids becoming more familiar with country locations without memorization #worldgeochat
A4-Students struggle with visual/spatial understanding these days. Too much time looking at screens while they are in their cars, not looking out the windows #worldgeochat
Google โThe Secret Doorโ it is a website that will take you to random places in the world with 360 views. We have been to the Great Barrier Reef, Hiroshima, Paris, the Sahara, etc. GREAT tool for teaching cultural landscapes. #worldgeochat
A4 i always take for granted what they know/donโt know, especially early in the year. Weโre on MyMaps and Iโll be like โwhy doesnโt anyone understand the need for multiple levels?โ Or โwhy did they not put an arrow to pinpoint thatโ but I need to model it! #worldgeochat
A4 a challenge is not relying on iPads for stuff like this. I often rely on activities that are only iPad compatible rather than printing. #worldgeochat
A4: Persepctive is a challenge when annotating maps! We are successful when we see maps and concepts that we are familiar with, but what about when we have to step out of our comfort zone? What clues can we use from our perspective to help us out? #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat not sure if this is typical annotating or an rating at all but I really love using the variety of floor maps and getting students to use themselves as pins for points of interest
A5 Probably last year when we used Tour Builder to detail different journeys taken by refugees. I will be doing that again this year too. #worldgeochat
A5-Bucket list vacation! End of the year-what are the places we have studied that you would love to visit? Is there a specific site that you want to see? #worldgeochat
A5-Students adding events as layers corresponding to time periods, civilizations, etc. & building a narrative around it. Importing into @googleearth & sharing #worldgeochat
A5 I can't find a photo of it, but I ask my students to annotate migration flow on a global scale. They have to provide migration motivations, destinations, raw numbers, etc. #worldgeochat
A5: "Travel Trunks" using Google Slides and a My Map are very cool. Ss pretend to take a journey around a continent (or wherever) and in each country they drop a pin, find a souvenir, and describe it. They then present their worldly trip to the class. :) #worldgeochat
A5 I guess something where the annotating leads to deeper learning or they do something with the annotated work. I used to assign some pretty low-level annotation work. #TheMoreiKnow#worldgeochat
A4 One issue weโve run into with no authentic solution is the smothering dominance of Mercator online. #AuthaGraph4eva Having students annotate with different projections can be really difficult, but really worthwhile. #worldgeochat
A5: My favorite map assignment (no annotating) so far has been having students draw a map of our school. We did a gallery walk with them at the beginning of the year to show map perspective. Maybe next year I can add an annotation element to it? Any suggestions? #worldgeochat
A5 I also like anything where Ss study #VoyagerStories in @googleearth and then create their own in Tour Builder. Adds in powerful storytelling, which maps are a great asset! #WorldGeoChat
Don't forget Google Earth Voyager stories like this one @le_reitz created https://t.co/cZyholOndh So grateful for the teachers that created these Google Earth Voyager stories! They are an amazing resource! #worldgeochat
A5
Best assignment...
Having Ss annotate their own personal stories. Favorite places. Places the want to go. Connections they have with other places.
#worldgeochat
A5 @MrsWalkerOPS and I are having kids highlight natural wonders of Asia and linking their digital brochures in my maps and teachers will vote on the most interesting. #worldgeochat
It certainly makes me wonder. Especially, for instance, how the maps changed after WWI. Why, how, for what purpose were they changed? How did that change the dynamics going into WW2. etc. #worldgeochat
Super huge thanks to @GeoJo22 for hosting tonight's super fast lightning round #worldgeochat!
Next week is our last WGC of the year! It's the annual #worldgeochat Gift Giving Extravaganza!

For the giant maps, you need the gym space, but MapMaker Kits are printable PDFs that come in tabletop or wall-sized tiles! If you laminate them, they can be reused, too. #worldgeochat

Google MyMaps is great to annotate maps. Drop and pin and talk about what you see, think, and wonder there!
A4: Remembering Ss need to annotate a variety formats of maps. My kids are extremely fluent on MyMaps because itโs engaging and easy, but when I pulled out a globe today to show the proximity of East Asia to the US, they were astounded. #WorldGeoChat
Here's a great place to start w some tutorials on MyMaps by @mrpiercEy. It's super student friendly. Have lots of ideas so just reach out if you need anything. #WorldGeoChathttps://t.co/COdvlcFGJb
Q2) I'm teaching Modern World History from the end of WW1 to end of the Cold War. Other than the after affects of WW1 and Cold War maps changing, what other maps could I implement for annotation #WGCAfterDark#worldgeochat
Nope, @MsIppolito! We welcome formal and informal educators, from academics to administrators to museum educators to (my favorite) zoo educators. Give it a try, see what you think! #worldgeochat

I started using @Screencastify earlier this year and then learned about appsmashing with @flipgrid. Both are amazing tools on their own and integrate very well with G Suite. #worldgeochat
