I teach English & Social Studies to high school English Language Learners, mainstream and International Baccalaureate students in Sacramento, California #EduGoalsMOOC
Welcome guest expert @SteveWheeler who is an award-winning international speaker, author, and former Associate Professor of Learning Technologies at the Plymouth Institute of Education https://t.co/0NTO6U2R4a#EduGoalsMOOC
Q 1: It’s important to know when & how tech can bring a “value-added” impact to teaching. I have 3 recommendations for resources: The Best Places To Find Research On Technology & Language Teaching/Learning https://t.co/XxgC0i6IPW#EduGoalsMOOC
A1: There are many reasons why it's important - the first is because technology plays a major role in our lives and children should know how to leverage its power. https://t.co/g5JvOCFw8V#EduGoalsMOOC
A1: There are many reasons why it's important - the first is because technology plays a major role in our lives and children should know how to leverage its power. https://t.co/g5JvOCFw8V#EduGoalsMOOC
A1: Secondly, technology can motivate children to learn in many new and different ways. It helps them to write better for example - see Quadblogging and @DeputyMitchell's work on writing #EduGoalsMOOC
A1. Students are driven by technology and most use technology before they are even old enough to come to school. They are growing up in a technological world and we as educators must stay up to date with new technological advances. #EduGoalsMooc
A1 We shouldn't use technology for its own sake, but should always remember that Pedagogy is the driver, technology is the accelerator (M. Fulan) #EduGoalsMOOC
A1: Thirdly, if we want education to be relevant and vital to children, we need to be able to present knowledge in new ways, and technology is familiar to them. #EduGoalsMOOC
Q2: I’ve got to say one obvious skill that all my students need to develop is being able to type. Dance Mat Typing is ideal for ELLs because it shows & says letters and words 2 type. The Best Sites Where Students Can Learn Typing/Keyboarding https://t.co/jsPGUbz051#EduGoalsMOOC
A1: the concept of citizenship must include all modes of communication/interactions, digital or otherwise. Do it is imperative that we support complete citizens, including digital understandings. #EduGoalsMooc
A2: The most important skill for all students is to be safe online. e-safety and security are important skills to embed in the curriculum #EduGoalsMOOC
We owe it to our students to have the most up to date toolbox possible. We expect it from our surgeons, architects and our detectives! But we should always remember... they’re just tools! #EduGoalsMOOC
A1 it's important that we stay ahead of the game. being behind the ball is not a comfortable place. we have to know how to use tech to enhance education. It's not a side thought. Like salt and pepper on our food. It must be integrated nicely. #edugoalsmooc
So true! Access is so easy, in many places not in all the world, but it´s rather early for many children to be handling technology, but we have to cope with that! It´s here to stay! #EduGoalsMooc

A2: I would also extend it beyond skills into 'literacies' - the ability to transfer existing skills such as reading and numeracy into new contexts, e.g. digital #EduGoalsMOOC

A2 also children should be encouraged to hack technology in the best sense, be inquisitive, see how you can innovate and make it work for you #EduGoalsMooc

I think we also need to help students understand the importance & value of self-control. New versions of the famous Marshmallow Experiment replace marshmallows with text messages. We just did a lesson on that this week #EduGoalsMooc
A2: Also, students need to be able to discern good from bad content online. Teach them to evaluate content effectively and separate fact from fiction #EduGoalsMOOC
Q 3: Educators need to understand legal issues related to student online privacy: The Best Teacher Resources For Online Student Safety & Legal Issues https://t.co/KSOO4ngeIO#EduGoalsMOOC

#OnlineSafety IS and MUST be a priority in homes and schools! I totally agree: internet spreads things too fast Our kids even adults need to understand it and also #digcit#EduGoalsMooc

A3: .... and also a 3 minute video called '3 things you should know about digital literacies' Have a look, have a laugh https://t.co/M9NS86RbYL#EduGoalsMOOC
A1 #EduGoalsMOOC
It helps to know what you're doing
otherwise others can catch you out by asking questions which confuse you…
@HybridPed is a good place to start
…but anything on pedagogy viewed through a critical digital eyeglass will also do for a start
A3: Don’t assume students know how to use the tech effectively. Also, don’t add tech because you think you have to, use it to enhance, extend or empower the learning. #EduGoalsMooc
A3: I always counsel that we should be selective about technology integration. Only use it if it will extend, enrich or encourage new learning #EduGoalsMOOC
A3. Model, model, model. Use the gradual release approach with all young learners. Establish and set boundaries up front, so that they do not become an issue later on. This takes time.. have patience. They will catch on and excel. #EduGoalsMooc
A3 we should remember to stay focused on the learning & not the technology
also keep in mind that our young learners have never been without tech-tech is an integral part of their lives-tap into that as an asset
Especially with adolescent- let them take the lead #edugoalsmooc
Best place for children to try out new technology is in a safe environment - such as the classroom with good sensitive supervision and advice on hand. #EduGoalsMOOC
Los docentes están convencidos de las ventajas de incluir dispositivos como los celulares y el uso de internet en la #educacion, los docentes antes eran los dueños del saber pero ahora ya no,, esa es #reesponsabilidad de los alumnos. @juandoming#EduGoalsMOOC@SteveWheeler

Q4: I think it’s imprtnt 2 balance online activities between students consuming content and students creating content. I believe, ELL teachers like myself overdo it on having students consume, when creating can be an incredibly motivating language-learning strategy #EduGoalsMOOC
A2 #EduGoalsMOOC
Number 1 skill: How to ask questions…
and who to ask questions of.
Some people/things answer questions well and helpfully, others are mean and unhelpful with their answers.
A4: Make sure the technology is relevant, and that it supports their learning. Children aren't always impressed with new technology, but they are with good teaching. #EduGoalsMOOC

I agree with @Larryferlazzo and also think that we can building leaders with teens and adults. If you know that a student or group can help lead or assist with tech, let them! #edugoalsmooc

Much of what young people engage with isn't in those safe authenticated walled garden environments. Eye opening discussion with my students recently about what they accessed online as school children. I was unaware of much of what they described. #EduGoalsMooc
Is this a skill for students? Or something that whatever system they are asked to use should afford? Safety etc should be embedded by the institution.
#EDUGoalsMOOC
Hi Derek, yes you're right. There needs to be frank conversation in the classroom about the risks and threats of the Web as well as the benefits. #EduGoalsMOOC
Absolutely! However, I must admit technology played a HUGE rol in my ESL Ss in the US and at home my 10-year-old if fully bilingual! I am the one to blameGames and other teaching websites did a wonderful job, besides my son, myself and TV! #edugoalsmooc
Hi Steve :) I used to be so certain about my place as the educator. Felt I was in a position of 'knowing' about online safety. That discussion I mentioned made me realise just how detached I am from youth culture and behaviour in online spaces. #EduGoalsMooc
Q5: I’ve had my ELL Geography students do projects with English classes throughout the world: Links To The Joint Projects My ELL Geography Class Did With Classes Around The World – https://t.co/ddSBc6nZzV#EduGoalsMOOC
Sure, Sir! I see that on a daily basis! Students STILL appreciate a better explanation coming from a teacher more than a cool tool or app! They still do like the human presence #Edugoalsmooc
A5: One of the most effective ways to integrate tech is to create personal learning environments. Personal technology and personal (user generated) resources are key here. #EduGoalsMOOC
Q5: My students have also done many other online projects: The “All-Time” Best 2.0 Tools For Beginning English Language Learners https://t.co/5qTKmOoRSb#EduGoalsMOOC
Q5: You can’t go wrong creating opportunities where students can use technology to have an “authentic audience” (more than just teacher & classmates) view what they create: The Best Places Where Students Can Write For An “Authentic Audience” https://t.co/dhOVoBeJDB#EduGoalsMOOC
Thank you for all the student work you post. I used to look at the separate website with the list a lot. I’m not sure it’s still there, but it was awesome 👏🏾#EduGoalsMOOC
A5 I love the digital portfolios that young ELLs are making online. they help make progress visible to students. Especially speaking progress which in the past was difficult to make visible. It may seem simple, but it's very motivational for language learners! #edugoalsmooc

But that conversation is one that possibly not many of us, I would argue, are knowledgable enough to fully engage in. We talk about keeping safe yet video chatroulette style sessions using Omegle were talked about with a sense of gleeful mischief. #EduGoalsMooc
I used to sun a first year module on digital reputation and literacy which was very popular. I would draft in experts to help run the sessions. #EduGoalsMOOC
A6: There are many places to find tools and apps. Try following people like @rmbyrne and @hopkinsdavid who are always posting content and links #EduGoalsMOOC

I recognised the attraction of that 'risky' behaviour. Could imagine me and my friends doing something similar had I been 14/15 with access to such things. I wonder if our knowledgeable, informed paternal approach to the web is tolerated by young people? #EduGoalsMooc
A6 I find that if you are working in a school setting like mine, very often there are tools available from the school. It is good to use them because there are often tutorials to go with them #EduGoalsMOOC
I look at digital childhood with my 3rd year students however I am beginning to question who the experts really are. Real eye opener for me that experience which made me question my place in the discussion/learning. Think I need to be learning much more. #EduGoalsMooc
A7: There are two key texts/models on tech integration I recommend. One is SAMR by @rubenrp and the other is TPACK by Mishra and Koehler. #EduGoalsMOOC
Have you used Spiral @SpiralEducation? I highly recommend it for formative assessment, online discussions and collaborative presentations #EduGoalsMooc
I think that sites like the UK's Futurelab are a real loss to leading thinking about effective use of the digital. Inspirational sites that light fires of curiosity and imagination such as the @makeymakey gallery are first class imho. #EduGoalsMoochttps://t.co/M6hfQAY95F
Yes! I wish we could do more here! It´s such a pity safety in our streets is so bad! It´s risky and dangerous! We used to do a lot without tech and was so motivating/engaging! #EduGoalsMooc :(
