Welcome to Topic: Should digital literacy be a job requirement for educators and how would that be defined?
What would be at the top of your dream or list?
NOW Topic: Should digital literacy be a job requirement for educators and how would that be defined?
Good evening Mark here from Estes Park, CO
Definitely!!!! I think the definition doesn't have to be tight, but include some knowledge, and willingness to learn
Our moderator had something come up. Anyone willing to moderate tonight at 7pm? You choose the topic & 8 questions.
Yes. Digital literacy could be that u are proficient in the tools u need to use to teach what and how you teach
Digital literacy is requirement in my district in VA.
Hi Mark. Hope you're enjoying live in CO
Thanks Terry... so what might that include?
Virginia requires college course or a tech portfolio or approval from previous state.
How is that defined, Jeanie.
Welcome to ! Topic: Should digital literacy be a job requirement for educators and how would that be defined?
Cool... so, Jeanie what's that include? Demo of mastery?
Hey Terry have you met ??? Welcome to
Join now Topic: Should digital literacy be a job requirement for educators and how would that be defined?
My Digital Literacy page https://t.co/om251GZS7c DL = ability to find, understand, evaluate, create, & communicate digital info.
tools will be different for different teaching tasks. #1 need to be able to identify the tool that fits the pedagogy
First time trying this...Yes, if we want students to be digitally literate, then educators must be, too.
Oooohhhhh....I imagine this will draw a lot of response! Unless Ts will have ongoing training, how can be required?
Digital literacy need to be a requirement, but too many ppl doing the hiring don’t understand what that means.
Hey Maureen meet Jranie So what must teachers know and be able to do wtih tech?
NOW IN PROGRESS Topic: Should digital literacy be a job requirement for educators and how would that be defined?
REQUIRING SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING is a surefire way for them not to do it...
Hi Meagan... TAKE A DEEP BREATH... exhale slowly!
The portfolio has about 7-10 tech requirements...word, PP, excel, newsletters, website, few other reqires.
Hi everyone. Excited to join you all on a beautiful fall night in Ontario.
Truthfully, I’m more concerned about a person’s willingness to learn & try new things that what they actually know now.
- CTN from Michigan! Our first !
- CTN from Michigan! Our first !
The portfolio has about 7-10 tech requirements...word, PP, excel, newsletters, website, few other reqires.
Ts need to know which tech to use when. Worksheet on laptop is still a worksheet
Okay Meagan... pleased to intro you to ... she'll help you find your way with
That statement holds true for many aspects of hiring process in schools.
Truly depends on position--most people today can do basic tech. .email, Google docs, presentation,
IMO this is situationally dependent. If you “require” an initiative, it will likely fail, but… (1 of 2)
I'm not interested in your green screen. I'm worried about the kids in front of that screen. Read this: https://t.co/2XXSdkLLPa
It's crucial to continue to learn new things as technology advances. Support through PD needs to be there as well.
Pedagogy should drive the tool not the other way. Trying just for trying without a reason is not good.
Welcome to -> -- so digital literacy req for teachers. Thoughts? Why? How?
Unless there's a clear rationale related to serving Ss well.
Absolutely- technology is everywhere! Educators should be required to have basic knowledge and an open mind to learn
thanks Terry... so how to know if T has capacity for doing that?
Absolutely…and I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. However, receptiveness to new ways is important.
Noah with Stackup hopping in late. Good evening all!
Well what might a requirement involve?
You might be surprised. Email, yes. Other basic tech??? not so much, in my experience
A: Absolutely...I don't take my tech illiterate colleagues seriously...and I run this twitter!
I'd like to see schools adopt ongoing, inclusive systems of development
Requiring it is difficult. It's important and necessary for students to also become digitally literate, but there must be buy-in.
Hey PLN, do yourself a favor ->
Part of my job is to make sure new Ts to my school meet the state requirements.
Digital literacy should not have to be a job requirement ... it is a way of life ... almost like breathing air.
YES!! https://t.co/a332BXHRXN
Should Organizational Leadership and the study of it-reflect mindfulness? YES! Helps create better awareness of both self and others
I like the idea of "fostering" an atmosphere of digital learning! Showing Ts that tech is a great tool to add to toolbox.
Probably depends on position, availability of tech, way it is used in district.
(2 of 2)…establishing some minimal requirements to get the job in the first place may help get the right ppl in.
Dig lit is a vital component for T's and not enough is done to prep/instruct t's on how to successfully navigate a 21c classroom
I created a portfolio of my microskills/skills. Maybe teachers should have to have certain components???
How can we get students to be future-ready if the teachers aren't?!
I'm with you Nikki--that's the way to go.
Throwing your hands up and saying "I can't do technology" is unacceptable and you are setting a bad example for the kids.
Thanks Katelyn... so what comprises basic knowledge of tech?
I've found the best way to get Ts interested in showing them how it can make content more engaging and their workload lighter. ;)
Often times teachers do what's easier for them and not what's best for their students. https://t.co/DIjfFeVwmS
Throwing your hands up and saying "I can't do technology" is unacceptable and you are setting a bad example for the kids.
the problem with pre-service prep is that by the time they get to use in the real world it is already gone.
True--important to have time to regularly share tech ideas, help one another develop too.
If going to make "required",this must be in place first! Otherwise, turns in to "good ideas" that Ts forget
Agreed! Way better to say "I can't do it YET" and perhaps invite help from ss
NOT when properly trained and encouraged
Do other professionals get to ignore tech or changing tools? Do doctors get to pass on new tech? Engineers?
instead of focusing on specific software focus on skills ... "video editing" not iMovie "word processing" not Word = flexibility
The basics - Email, calendar, google apps. Anything to get you started with tools that students can use in the classroom.
Who needs the clutter of the web? Through your students have access to curated content and safe web searches
Yet there are mainstay platforms such as Google, Khan Academy, FB, Twitter--These vehicles grow w/us
Email, word processing, presentation. Some Ts don't know more than that
I think it's important to teach preservice educators to create a website.
Im a doctor...our tech is tested prior to use. Educ tech usually isnt.
for now ... google is a search engine ... FB/Twitter is Social Media ... Khan Academy is video play back
True--general and specific since T's need to create right away.
And we all know who those people are...
Using proper search tools is an important skill some teachers lack.
IN EDUCATION technology shouldn't be about the technology ... rather about the pedagogy.
And.. should teachers know/do Pokemon? MindCraft?
Most movie making platforms similar--if you can make an iMove, you can make a Wevideo. . .
Outstanding point. Skills more important than the tool. https://t.co/4jd7tLUsa8
instead of focusing on specific software focus on skills ... "video editing" not iMovie "word processing" not Word = flexibility
of apps, websites, platforms may be more beneficial (2 of 2)
most professionals have continuing education requirements. I don't see why it should be any different for education
Agree with Mark's point and add that it can also be about skill development when using the technologies https://t.co/m3TusxIg9W
IN EDUCATION technology shouldn't be about the technology ... rather about the pedagogy.
Depends on depth of use, critical nature--simple tech can be tried on the spot, expensive, "thick" tech can't .
- It doesn't hurt to be aware of them to support student interest.
I think it helps Ts to understand Ss better if have even a basic understanding of S tech
I start kids with iMovie or then they can move to Premiere, FCP, Sony Vegas ... once in they see similarities
It should be more about how it influences our teaching to help students become successful and prepared for the future.
: we need evidence-based strategies, but they must be drawn from what works in our local context
that's why it's so important to teach the proper tools so students can continue to learn on their own
Exactly! ... it is the in action ... we limit it when we use a single title.
- In Michigan, we do have that requirement.
Attn: All VA Social Studies Ts - Join/renew VCSS for free this year. Offer Expires 12/31/16 https://t.co/xUNeiHgGQp
Technology is not effective unless it is based in solid instruction and pedagogy!
Love that idea- I do something similar as well! https://t.co/AViRFl0ALW
I'm working on some mini tech sessions with my staff. Making my office a cafe-style cozy place for learning.
Technology used correctly has potential. It has brought the world into my school and my small school to the world
then move up to FCP/Adobe/SOny ... professional grade stuff.
Using google to find quality resources, operating social media, using computers/iPads, technology used daily
- Agreed. Playing with Kahoot doesn't require hours of support.
of course not! Educators need to embrace new tools and use the best available tools to engage students
Educators should use YA , just like educators read YA books.
Often the structure of schools prevents T openness to new ideas/learning
YES! And it burns me up! https://t.co/UUNLwbnac0
Often times teachers do what's easier for them and not what's best for their students. https://t.co/DIjfFeVwmS
Throwing your hands up and saying "I can't do technology" is unacceptable and you are setting a bad example for the kids.
administrators need to prioritize teaching technology so educators are on the same page as the students
I see all those tools as creation tools too--you can create a lot w/all of those tools.
The keys words are “technology used correctly.” Too often just a substitute for paper/pencil.
Showing a growth mindset to Ss. Aren't we supposed to model what we want Ss to do? Perfect example! https://t.co/xuGHCK1jid
Agreed! Way better to say "I can't do it YET" and perhaps invite help from ss
and the great admins model this by learning themselves!
I want my kids to know that Word/Pages/GoogleDocs are words processors and they basically do the same thing
: teaching is now a science; teaching is a team game. Teaching students to kick their own goals!
Yes! Solid PD throughout the year can support the pedagogy and tech integration. https://t.co/un263l41nM
Technology is not effective unless it is based in solid instruction and pedagogy!
Systems are often reluctant to allow T's to use a host of tools for many reasons--that's an obstacle.
Maybe curation skills are the most important. Whatever you need to curate your topic you should be able to do.
We need to model & by providing it to our staff & students.
having the students invested is important and giving them rewards is a good way to keep them involved
Agreed! I also do weekly edtech tips, which the teachers have seemed to enjoy since they can review it on their own time.
We have continuing ed requirements, just few that are tech based.
- Those other professions don't have to pay out of pocket to find new tools either.
WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO, technology can help you do it. So, what do you need to do? Grow from there...
And ensure educator PD (personalized learning) is sustained throughout the year.
I follow the "What works for kids" mantra ... if they want to discuss if I am right or wrong I am open to that.
Exactly. It's even important for getting teachers invested, too!
It's always a bad idea to follow up a Flannery O'Connor story with your own work.
Have you found a sweet spot for number of tips to share in a given week?
The culture of testing also hinders T willingness to try new things. "no time" for that
Could you share an example of your weekly tips?
Or advocate heavily to use the tools in the workplace.
Admins only care about data. We need to juggle developing tech skills through curriculum
I send out one tech tip per week. For my site, I think that is good so that it does not become too much.
Tech "Petting Zoo" at lunch where teachers try new things can be helpful.
Yes, but a lot is blocked at elementary--I've been asking for Minecraft EDU for years w/no success.
that's great! I wish more states did
Please, please, please - SOME admins… I care about children & teachers first.
I have Appy Hour each wk with a new tool! It's really laid back and fun! https://t.co/ATbcIC9BTn
Agreed! I also do weekly edtech tips, which the teachers have seemed to enjoy since they can review it on their own time.
What is the argument for blocking in schools?
Agree--love what does for learning.
Yes, it's like saying "should literacy be a job requirement" we live in a digital world digital literacy is essential
I look at tech as a way to fill a Ss toolbox. Give them skills they need to navigate a 21c world.
I agree but you have to learn English before you can learn poetry
I've lost track of the argument(s).
Yes! Ts need to spend time learning about and what Ss know
Just learned about the Pineapple chart last week...such a great, simple and powerful idea!
Reward digital technology pioneers with good evaluations. Too many who refuse to learn are still given high marks.
Yet I went to great presentation on Minecraft EDU this summer.
PD needs to personalized and engaging. "Sit and get" does not work well. Especially PD at the end of the teaching day.
well said... so start where you are, grow from there.
I didn't ask ... I just installed Minecraft and let the kids build using their own civilizations ... I'm sorry?
I'm looking forward to learning about this.
Some admins! I should have specified. We have some forward thinkers.. https://t.co/NleC6Q7F13
Please, please, please - SOME admins… I care about children & teachers first.
Sure! I focus on known-tech. Last wk, how to schedule gmails for a later time using the Boomerang extension. https://t.co/jCRrmmf52j
Could you share an example of your weekly tips?
There's so, so, so much pressure about testing and scores.
not all. they do have to play the game, he supports what is best for kids
I have to look into that extension for sure.
Yes! I stopped using the brand and just "word processor."
Join in 1/2 hour: "What Does It Mean to Be Verbally Gifted?" with
Too much focus on data instead of what is best for kids and learning
Year after year I see that my Ss who play Minecraft are more prepared for math learning.
True, they also get first hand training and the best: don't wait for the budget to allow upgrades too often
I see this as an equity issues as those who play Minecraft ahead of those who don't
Did Master level research on integration of Civ IV in SS class ... games help
Great for problem solving skills.
This makes me think of SAMR. Often, we tend to stay at the "substitution" level.
where there is a will there is a way
Admins that push data are reacting to pressure from higher-ups
We have so many blockers and "watchers" --we get in trouble when we do what's not approved. Tough.
Sadly, (but fortunately for me) I have little tchr turnover. Hired 1 last yr.
Need to get back on the twitter bandwagon as find it the best part of PD and reflection for educators
I agree. I am studying that as we speak.
Absolutely needs to be a balance.
we recreated ancient civilizations as we studied them ... cool stuff
Again, an equity issue--many Ss play and benefit at home, those w/o access don't
Not saying I disagree, but what would you say to veteran Ts, who don't know and haven't been trained?
Is it fair to receive poor evaluations when you haven't been taught how to use tech?
It's awesome! You can choose to resend your email if someone doesn't read it or just to remind! https://t.co/UB1JK4Xkte
I have to look into that extension for sure.
At Harvard Peabody Museum, Ss says re Mayan model, "I can't wait to build that on MInecraft."
I act now and apologize later *not recommended for everyone
Sometimes that may work, but often there can be huge consequences.
. is an easy-to-use, easy-to-implement online learning, classroom management, social n/w - ETR https://t.co/nfqC7XE3ha
Interesting idea, but how to supply coverage for observations in Elem setting?
Being smart about what you do is important and having the trust of your administration helps.
I told our tchrs the admins will cover if they can’t going during planning time.
Quickly skimmed the article. Very interesting idea!
Data can help. Technology can help. But what matters most is kids and their learning.
Data is worthless if teachers are not taught how to use it to support learning.
Can you pass that word along to my admins? :)
So exciting to see students motivated to engage in hostile using !
reminds me of: Data must go from Information => Knowledge to be useful
egads... sad state of affairs.
Those questions are often not well received.
Digital literacy is wonderful, so long as it improves today's literacy: an interaction, immersion, personal mastery of today's world
Talking digital ... I need to do a write-up to support the school buying a couple of drone cameras ... taking those risks.
Teachers need to be given permission to fail. This will let teachers try new things and expand their knowledge.
MOST TECHNOLOGY is not designed specifically for Education...repurposed. Often makes teaching more difficult.
Digital isn't about what it can do ... it is about the opportunities it can create for our kids.
love it. That can lead to some amazing creative projects.
Awesome, Nancy! Educators learning from educators! https://t.co/gjSzEydqMM
I told our tchrs the admins will cover if they can’t going during planning time.
This is why I'm so committed to tech integration--opens so many doors for so many learners, awesome!
I tell my Ts: easier to ask forgiveness than permission sometimes
Yet some tech not designed for education is the best for learning.
Some tech designed for education is "workbook on a page" tech.
When infused with learning as the key component. It’s not just about new tech.
I think showcasing your tech skills can have a positive effect, maybe spark a conversation? https://t.co/WGkmxnN2lD
Awesome, Nancy! Educators learning from educators! https://t.co/gjSzEydqMM
I told our tchrs the admins will cover if they can’t going during planning time.
hostile using is cool ... kids be like "We're Minecrafting ... at school!" Cool
[EDUCATION] Yes, Preschool Teachers Really Do Treat Black And White Children Totally Differently ☞ https://t.co/p6a5x5hpJd
- The best teachers will try things out and make them work no matter the original intent.
Just substitution... maybe fancier. :) https://t.co/S6PzTbzAAV
Some tech designed for education is "workbook on a page" tech.
To improve literacy and classroom culture, be real with students' fears -- and your own. Mine exposed: https://t.co/H3Uwd52ryb
If is being used just to digitize a worksheet, the power of is not bring leveraged.
I need to do a write up on why this is a great learning tool to add to our tech curric.
Agreed! The data is only useful if it personalizes the education for each student to support their learning.
I tend that way as well, but new Ts don't feel confident enough to do so
Thank you for participating in so much to learn, so little time to learn it. Together we can! S/o to
Learning is about creating meaningful memories ... it can happen with or without tech.
. does the pedagogy lead the or does the lead the pedagogy?
I started one of those conversations today :)
This has been a great ! Thanks !
Thanks to the mods for a great chat! FYI, our Chrome ext is FREE4LIFE for Ts and Ss who sign up this semster https://t.co/EdzMVwooxt
Great question--I think the questions, needs, interests, and passions lead both.
We have an Idaho 2nd grade classroom looking for an outside class to do a GHO with! https://t.co/VEJaxvc6Cf
Looking for a 2nd classroom outside the US to do a Google Hangout with!!
I hope the pedagogy leads the edtech.
Learning is also about building capacity, opportunity, potential, promise.
took me 10 years to develop confidence ... now it is borderline arrogance
True and true. I think it requires a very creative and motivated T to properly use tech in the classroom.
should lead what tools are being used to achieve the learning target - whatever that is.
Thanks Nancy, Tom, and Mark--challenging tonight for me due to tech obstacles I face.
What a great first for us. Great new educators to follow!! Thank you everyone!
Thanks for the great chat!
Looks like I'm moderating in 10 minutes. EVERYONE WELCOME! Let's reflect on the start of the year!
New review explores different methods states use to fund full-day and half-day kindergarten https://t.co/Uah0yEqnxj
Join us TONIGHT in a little over an hour for ! 9pm ET/8pm CT! Talking !
Agreed. I think can be a great tool to personalize learning for students.
well Maureen... take a deep breath, exhale slowly... then say "I can Do This three times...
I often see the leading (or limiting) the pedagogy, technology has a bias
Also great collaboration tool :)
Amazing that we want confidence from students but shy away when it's our chance to learn. https://t.co/jPn60PqEP7
I tend that way as well, but new Ts don't feel confident enough to do so
Yes! I love Google Apps for collaboration. Just started using Padlet, too.
Google has been a "friend" to me w/teaching for so many reasons and so many apps.
Thanks to all who participated in & to co-mods: . (Safe travels to )
Ts must model the growth mindset we ask Ss to have. Many don't want to "lose control"
Another lively discussion tonight! Thx to moderators: .
Why do I have to refresh browser to see posts as they're added? Previously, I didn't t need to do this
Thanks for joining us Shawn :)

instead of focusing on specific software focus on skills ... "video editing" not iMovie "word processing" not Word = flexibility
My first was amazing! Thank you It was truly an amazing experience.
Many Ts would disagree. You know the ones I mean....
I hope you'll join me and others for in 2 MINUTES! ALL GRADES WELCOME! We're reflecting on the start of the year!
Once the school year begins, books get put aside. How do you keep up with luxury reading during the year?
