A1 Ts must be compassionate, empathetic, empowering, and listeners. We MUST make real connections to our Ss in order for any type of real learning to exist. Promote and give feedback to all Ss. Ts also need to show failure happens BUT we learn from it and TRY AGAIN. #LearnLAP
Great! Life has been crazy! Just got back from #ISTE18 roadtrip on Sunday. Doing #edcampvoice today and tomorrow! Gotta love it!

A2: Ss conduct business but know T has final say. Ss are doing groupwork, collaborating, and being leaders. Ts are floating around monitoring Ss and giving feedback #LearnLAP
A2: A student-led classroom is an environment where everyone is responsible for both learning AND teaching. Students are actively doing and learning instead of 90 mins of “sit and get.” Students are collaborating and answering interesting and difficult Qs. #LearnLAP#booksnaps
Q2 - A student-led classroom looks messy, but is not. Students are leading the charge and having ownership of their learning. There is a lot of collaboration, sharing, discussion and respect. Students are engaged, asking questions and discovering the answers together. #LearnLAP
We often believe that student-led means that the kids make all the choices, but it actually means building productive structures and constraints that allow kids to flourish. #learnlap
A1- relationships and love! Ss know if you are authentic and real!! They are like barometers! They know fake and nothing can get through without authenticity!
A2: In a student-led classroom, it may be noisy with sts moving around, but they are learning and collaborating. The sts are actively learning and the teacher is monitoring and coaching #LearnLAP

Hi all joining late from NJ. I teach grades 3-5 gifted - A2: I am working hard on creating a student centered CR and trying to give students more voice and choice in what and how they learn. I do a #geniushour that they love and want to implement give me 5 next year. #LearnLAP
A2. A Ss-led classroom puts Ss front and center of their learning. Ss are free to make choices regarding their learning, they work collaboratively, and take initiative. Ss share their thinking, misconceptions, and guided one another as the teacher supports as needed. #LearnLAP
A2: I’ve talked about this before but my goal for next year is to constantly be asking “could the students be saying/discovering what I’m saying right now? Do I *need* to be talking?”
The answer is almost always that they probably could so I probably don’t! #LearnLAP
A2: Ts and Ss are facilitating. It's not a sit and git scenario it's empowered learning because Ss are confident in what they are learning and sharing with one another. #LearnLap
A2: a student-led classroom allows for Ss to take ownership of their learning by making decisions and choices w/o always consulting the T. Ss are collaborating and taking charge while the T is able to observe and give feedback frequently. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A2 A student-led classroom will look like a busy environment; it may not always be clear exactly who is teaching and who is learning. Ss are active & engaged with their peers; the teacher spends more time in a coach or facilitator role.
A2: A student led classroom is one in which students are pursuing their passions, where they are encouraged to collaborate, to celebrate learning, to take risks, where ideas are fostered and nurtured. #learnlap
A2: I had my mindset flipped this fall w/@SmartLab_tweets where the approach is Ss-centered. Now, I just ask "Why?" and when kids hit a roadblock, I laugh and tell them that when they make the discovery they can come teach me! Works every time...and THEY get the win! #LearnLAP
A2: In a S led classroom, Ss have voice and choice. The T is probably mixed in with the Ss. It may appear that Ss are all doing different things, and that is good! #learnlap
A2a Student led classroom is where students guide the learning process through exploration of information, outside sources, world events to develop answers and understanding of essential questions.
#learnLAP
A2: The T is a guide on the side. Ss learn to trust themselves & make their own decisions. Failing doesn’t have have be a bad thing. Peer feedback and T feedback occurs often & helps Ss know their next steps. Ss are happy, build empathy toward others, and are busy! #LearnLAP
A2: a student led classroom looks messy, but Ss are engaged, helping one another and building community. Respect goes both ways and the teacher is doing more listening than talking. #LearnLAP
A2 In a student-led classroom, students are given an opportunity to work at their pace with necessary supports in place as needed in order to achieve. Ts & Ss are working together & all are openminded & willing #LearnLAP
A2- A student led classroom is magical! Ss take responsiblity for their learning environment and peers! Ts let go of "The Power" and let Ss become leaders. Trust is developed and relationships are nurtured! #learnLap
A2: It looks like
- building routines with Ss
- helping Ss understand natural consequences
- exposing Ss to high-interest material that sparks curiosities
- creating a malleable curriculum that Ss can mold autonomously
- cultivating an environment of human connection
#learnlap
Teachers are not in front lecturing they are participating/facilitating small groups. Students are given choices to help direct their learning. #LearnLAP
A2 - Student led is one where the class has ownership in their learning. It’s about a shared vision that isn’t about one person, but about all people. It looks happy, Enthusiastic, non judgmental, empowering. Also, choice is key. #learnlap
#learnLAP A1. Teachers need to be able to connect with students coming from a variety of situations and having various experiences going on in their lives.
A2: A student led classroom allows students to make decisions and gives them the opportunity to guide their own learning. There should be a constant buzz around the room as students are regularly collaborating with each other! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A2: I often tell my students that everyone in our class learns, including me. Letting the students learn, share their learning and be curious for more. The Tchs act as coaches and cheerleaders.. not answer vending machines..
A2 Students are asking questions, dialoging about topics. Connecting meaning with a "coach" in the room to bounce ideas with and gain context and or clarity. #learnlap
A2: In a student-led classroom, students are the ones doing the work. Thinking, brainstorming, questioning, experimenting, reading, creating, etc. Teachers are supporting students in their learning and providing feedback! Giving as many students 1-on-1 time as possible #LearnLAP
A2. In Ss led classroom, Ss are working in groups or with each other, T does have control, but Ss are leading discussions, work, ideas, visions, topics, where the T may just be facilatating. #learnlap
A2: In a student-led classroom, the T is responsive to S strengths, needs, & interests. Ss feel seen, heard, and honored where they are. There is voice and choice! #LearnLAP@PaulSolarz
A2b Ss are reading P or Sec source text, watching videos, taking notes from textbook and other sources, working with other Ss to develop knowledge and understanding. Ts are present to moderate discussions between grps, or answer Qs from grps
#LearnLAP
A2: In a nutshell, a student-led classroom is one where Ss have voice and choice in the management of their classroom, v/c in their assgts, and one where the T is omnipresent but allows Ss to experience discourse and learn from it with high expectations #learnlap
A2: Student led means that teaching decisions are made in a way that Ss take the lead in learning. This comes through Ss functioning as Ts, students leading their learning, and Ss making choices abt their learning #learnlap
A2: Students are actively engaged in learning, challenging themselves and classmates in a respectful manner. T offers guidance as needed, and encouragement always. #learnlap
I'm tweeting out TONS of links and videos and screenshots with helpful resources throughout the chat tonight! I hope you'll check them out if you're interested!
#LearnLAP
A2: A student-led classroom is where S’s have such a high respect for learning that they are willing to make decisions for themselves about their learning and what they believe success looks like. In this classroom the T supports these efforts EVEN though it may fail! #LearnLAP
A2: A student-led classroom is one that is full of discussion n collaboration between the students. There is a lot of movement n discussion going on from the students. The teacher is moving around the room listening n the students are doing most of the talking. #learnlap
A2: I always think back to the Magic School Bus: students are asking the questions, guiding their own journey while the teacher guides them in the right direction without just giving the answer. #LearnLAP
I do it when I want to. I try to blog once a month. Sometimes I join a book study that encourages blogging. That helps. Still, I've learned its something for me and it feels good to get my thoughts and voice out there. Try it! ...and let the guilt go. ;D #LearnLAP
A2: A student-led classroom is one:
🗣where students have voice and choice
🧒 are teaching each other
👩🏫 where the teacher is doing more facilitating
🤔 kids are talking, collaborating, creating & thinking. 💭

The best learning comes when Ss have the opportunity to teach themselves! As #TeacherOfTheDay (chosen via @Flipgrid), Miss Torres decided she wanted to create her own game to teach her peers about contractions during small group. She calls it “Contraction Action”! @KirkElementary
A2: A student led classroom allows ss to have a choice and a voice in what they learn, how they learn it, when they learn it, when they are assessed on it, how they are assessed on it, and where they learn it! #LearnLAP
A2: A student-led classroom is one where everyone takes chances, even the teacher. It looks like a ship, where everyone has a job/task to do and can complete it without the teacher standing at the front of the room giving a lecture. #LearnLAP
A2 a student led classroom is; messy, exciting and fun! Ppl were ? Mine until admin pointed out Ss were engaged
And excited about learning. Funny how student led is out of the norm. Let's make it the norm!!
#LearnLAP
YES! If we don't provide a safe-space for them to take risks we may stifle their growth and later opportunities to step outside of their comfort zones. #LearnLAP
A2. Tons of choice provided for students. Teacher is not in front of classroom for majority of class time. Students are directing their own learning. HYperdocs are a great way to facilitate the student centered classroom. #LearnLAP
A1 - A teacher that doesn’t use the new shiny toy in class just because it’s ‘fun’, but requires evidence of its effectiveness. Fun doesn’t always equal learning. Looking engaged doesn’t always equal learning. #learnlap
QUESTION 1: What makes a quality teacher today? What traits should teachers have in today's classrooms? #LearnLAP
Reply with the #LearnLAP hashtag and "A1" to start your answer!
A1: Relationships are vital. So, a quality teacher is passionate—and compassionate—open-minded, a lifelong learner, and an active listener. A quality teacher is an inquirer and risk-taker. He/she learns with JOY and cultivates a joy for learning among students, too. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 1: What makes a quality teacher today? What traits should teachers have in today's classrooms? #LearnLAP
Reply with the #LearnLAP hashtag and "A1" to start your answer!
I love telling them that I’m learning too! (Especially because this was my first year so I was sometimes learning a little more than I let on). Having that conversation completely changes their mindset and their comfort level #LearnLAP
A2: Students moving, collaborating, working together, exploring and finding answers themselves, not saying the “1 Teacher answer” T is moving and interacting with Ss, not in corner separate. In Kinder, moving like little ants ☺️ #learnlap
A2 I see organized chaos, flexible seating, the teacher is on the move & facilitating, the students are on the move doing creating teaching others & talking. This is NOT a quiet classroom, it's exploding with excitement students are engaged and working together #learnLap
A3. Many Ts struggle with giving up “control” when it comes to creating a student-led environment. However, with effective modeling, feedback, and high expectations you get productive citizens who contribute to your classroom community in so many ways! Jump In! #LearnLAP
A1: Teachers need to be well-versed in #mentalhealth care for their students. They need to be as empathetic towards students’ emotional needs as they are towards their academic needs. #learnlap
A2. Students are highly engaged in their own learning. Ts are monitoring and guiding. To an outsider it might look like controlled chaos, but the outcomes are so rewarding! #LearnLAP
A2b - I’ve never really liked student or teacher led. I use the term, “it’s our class”. Building a team is how students truly take control of their learning. There is a tendency to hop on buzz words that sound good. We really just want students to find their passion. #learnlap
A2: In a student centered classroom, students are collaborating and working at their own pace. T is facilitating learning and providing small group instruction as needed. #LearnLAP
A3: Ss will try to push their limits and be disrespectful or they won't learn anything...
I'd love encouragement, feedback, and the opportunity to observe a Ts student-led class to help with these worries
#LearnLAP
A2: In a student-led classroom, students are the ones doing the work. Thinking, brainstorming, questioning, experimenting, reading, creating, etc. Teachers are supporting students in their learning and providing feedback! Giving as many students 1-on-1 time as possible #LearnLAP
A3: My biggest worry was giving up control because that was how I was taught. Also, fear of what the outside world might think if they walked past my classroom. The end product: Kids having fun, making discoveries, looking forward to coming to class, feeling EMPOWERED. #LearnLAP
A2: A student led class-room is one where students facilitate discussion on topics they are drawn to as a means of teaching themselves and their peers. #learnlap#education#edtech
Q3 - My biggest worry is the chaos, noise, and feeling of loss of control of my classroom. But I’m willing to take the risk, knowing that the reward is far greater. I want to give my students every opportunity to be actively engaged, motivated and successful learners. #LearnLAP
A2. Students are highly engaged in their own learning. Ts are monitoring and guiding. To an outsider it might look like controlled chaos, but the outcomes are so rewarding! #LearnLAP
A2- a student led classroom is messy, loud, engaging & kind where students are problem solving, thinking outside of the box, creating and being heard. #Learnlap
A3: I think that @effortfuleduktr said this well in his tweet for A1. Ts are sometimes concerned about perceived chaos or lack of control. Learning should be loud, exciting, and fun. Nothing more exciting than Ss talking about the content.
A3: teachers need to let go of control - I love learning w/ my Ss not standing in front of them. You don’t need to know everything that’s why we have #Google. Give your Ss a safe place to learn and they will take care of the rest! #LearnLAP
A3 Since I am still transitioning into a student-led classroom myself, I am still sorting out and slightly worried on how to establish this in the first weeks. I must model what I expect and provide opportunities to practice, provide feedback, allow Ss to reflect. #LearnLAP
A3: one concern I have and others is the amount of noise that will come from a student-led classroom. I typically like calm and quiet but I know that sound=productivity!!Ss need lots of talking to be actively engaged! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A3a Teachers may worry about the impact a student-led classroom will have on time to teach all the content required. A student-led classroom may actually help the time problem because students have more time to be engaged as learners.
#LearnLAP A1: LLlearner, growth mindset, teammate, passionate, engaging, pos. attitude, Believe ALL kids can learn, transformational, Know their WHY, reflective, builds relationships, high expectations, never gives up @PaulSolarz#tlap@TammyEmery3
A3- Ts are afraid of giving up the "Captain" chair, they feel as if they need to be in control- steering the ship and making decisions. If Ts can let go of the fear, and allow Ss to become owners of their education, we will see more Pirate ships!
#LearnLAP
A3 Ts may not want a messy classroom, or think it's not a learning environment. Ts may be worried about the structure & how old school we used to teach: Speak, Listen, Regurgitate, Repeat. Dispell those worries by showing how engaged Ss are and collaborative it becomes #LearnLap
A3 I think Ts fear the classroom management side of it-it'll be too loud, too chaotic, the Ss won't actually be learning etc etc but like everything else that just needs to be set up, practiced, and expected up front & throughout the year #LearnLAP
A3: Behavior problems are a concern, but when you give sts more power and control, they are less likely to act up because they no longer need to complete for that control #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A3b Ts may worry that the Ss in their classrooms won’t be able to handle a student-led environment due to behavior or personality. When the teacher does the work of setting up a student-led classroom, Ss are equipped with strategies for for successful leadership.
A3: giving up control. I still have problem trying this. In reality Ts are not giving up control though especially if your objective is well thought out. #LearnLAP
A3 - They worry about control, being evaluated, getting all the content done, giving up power. They are all legitimate. It comes from wanting to make change and watching others who’ve done it. Also, strong, encouraging leadership. I say start small, with easy stuff. #learnlap
A3 Too loud, too uncontrolled, too.... Its not the number of "ruls" but the amount of respect. The quality of the process, and the true care for the kids.. I think the rest worksitself out. #learnlap
A3 Some Ts are afraid of giving up control and feel classroom management issues could arise, or Ss may not learn. Instead, when #studentvoice is allowed to be heard, engagement increases learning increases, and magic happens! #learnLap
A3 - Dozens of questions & answers from me AND my students! Our #LearnLAP FAQ page: https://t.co/uZJuY0X5Y9
Refer to this while reading the book over the next 5 weeks! :)
A3: Teachers’ biggest fear transitioning to student-led is a fear of failure. It’s important for Ts to recognize that failure is an opportunity for learning. If we want students to be risktakers we have to be willing to do it ourselves. #LearnLAP#booksnaps
A3: I think the biggest worry is always giving up control. What happens if the learning doesn't go according to plan and my Principal walks in? Learning is an organic process. If students are demonstrating mastery, but not according to plan, learning is still happening. #learnlap
A3: in past years I avoided Ss led classes due to fear of chaos and noise level. I have realized that Ss misbehavior is for attention, or lack of engagement. I switched to more of a student led class this year and saw behavior problems descrease significantly. #LearnLAP
A3- Ts have fear- If we give Ss control, chaos will insue and nothing will get done! Nothing could be further from the truth! We need to share our experiences https://t.co/c7eT4eRyJg#learnLap
A3: Ts have mentioned concerns about the grading, the state test prep, the control, the “quality of instruction”, etc. I think it’s about these people doing some research (or giving them some resources) on how these things aren’t the obstacles that they think they are #LearnLAP
A3: Among other things, Ts worry about giving up control, worry that Ss can't do it, learning will be compromised, noise levels will be too high, fear it will add more for the T to do, etc. in considering a student-led cr #learnlap
A2: Have been doing a lot more student-led as I have studied this. What it looks like is students being given objective(s) and the turning it over to them to figure out the way to get there. Looks like noise, meaningful interaction, confidence, collaboration, activity #LearnLAP
A2: Ss are asking the Qs rather than always being told what Qs to ask. Ts allow discussion and learning to take a different path in order to reach S needs. #LearnLAP
A3: It may be unbalanced in that thr curriculum will become skewed towards the benefit of students who already feel comfortable speaking out. It’s not fair if only the few boldest students are directing the learning process for everyone. #learnlap
A2b- My biggest fear has been letting go for whole periods (90 min), and I rarely have a chance to see other Ts use it in their classroom. This year, I'm jumping in the ocean and letting my Ss become their own pirate crew. I hope to share with my PLN.
#LearnLAP
A1: This year, I asked 5th grade Ss what characteristics describe a great leader. I feel like their responses could apply to a great teacher as well. They were tasked to share one example and they asked if they could share more. #LearnLAP
A3: I hear ya, #PLN! I know some fears are that the curriculum will not be taught. It's a valid fear, but one that will lose it's grip once we let go and realize that Ss accountable for leading their learning will carry the curriculum along with some small T guidance. #LearnLAP
Yes! I am always concerned, but when 4 ppl walked in while Ss we're learning loudly I just went with it even tho hesistant. They loved the learning going on and Ss we're engaged #LearnLAP
A2: A student-led classroom is one filled with #agency. Ss are empowered and have an active voice and stake in the classroom. The teacher is a responsive facilitator/observer, provides freedom and choice, and models and supports a #growthmindset. #LearnLAP
A3: Part of school is teaching students how to be respectful and know their place as they learn what they need to learn. Agency for students has to be approached with caution such that they still learn humility. #learnlap
A3 One worry a teacher may have is "loosing control" I don't see it as the teacher loosing control, but giving the students' more control over their own education. #learnlap
A1: one who allows ss to own their learning adventure. who can relate to ss, who never loses their own sense of wonder. who is not afraid to be themselves. Who brings out the best in the ss. Assesses them in ways that can truly identify strengths and weaknesses. #LearnLAP
Honestly, though, I feel like at those times it really just flies by- The kids are doing their thing and before you know it I'm almost always saying, "ahhh!" we're late! #LearnLAP
A3: Ts worry that Ss won’t be learning, off task and playing. Loud doesn’t always = bad. Ts can be a model classroom and have others observe and join in! #learnlap
a3. Unorganized, uncontrolled chaos,- Teachers fear that they will have no control of anything. Small steps, letting go of things little by little. Giving Ss more freedom and control! #learnlap
A3: Time and meeting all the standards/covering curriculum are worries. Go deep and allow Ss to drive the discussion and standards will be met. Connect #pbl and #geniushour to required objectives and standards. It works! #learnlap
A1: one who understands and appreciate ss for their uniqueness. sometimes ss have the wiggles and forget pencils everyday but can build a mean RubeGoldberg machine! who can sit down and truly love talking, laughing, and learning with ss. all good tt love choc. Cake! #LearnLAP
I provided a lot of choice, flexible seating, I had Ss design their own rubrics, grade their own work, and pushed them to help one another. I created a poster - “Ask 3 before me”. - google, YouTube, or friends. #learnlap
A3: Some Ts feel like they will lose control over the Ss, but if they begin the year with relationship building, then they can regain control when necessary.#LearnLap
A4. Benefits of student-led classrooms: allow Ss to be active learners, take pride and ownership in their work, more time for feedback (from T and Ss),collaboration with peers in real, authentic experiences. #LearnLAP
A1: Openness to failure, in students and themselves. Like holy moly teachers can be wrong - and what a great opportunity to teach about humility. I experienced this often as a TA in college where I had to say "I don't know, but I will find out". #LearnLAP
It definitely is. If school is where students spend most of their time and #suicide rates are highest for that age group, there needs to be more empathetic outreach onsite. Teachers have the most contact with students. #learnlap
A4 - When students feel a sense of ownership, they become invested and engaged in what they're doing, even if it's not within what they previously thought they were interested in #learnlap
Q4 - Benefits of student-led classrooms: memorable learning experiences, increased student engagement, increased student confidence and empowerment, student leadership and collaboration, real-world 21st century learning, students HAVING FUN and ENJOYING school #LearnLAP
A3: Worries Ts may have about a student-led class:
😱 Giving up control
😱 Allowing kids to be LOUD!
😱 How to hold kids accountable
😱Misbehavior will occur
How can we dispel those worries?
⭐️ Be willing to try
⭐️ Ask others who have tried
⭐️ Believe in kids
#LearnLAP
A4 Frees up the teacher to give more 1:1 attn, Ss are more invested, Makes having a substitute so much easier to prepare for, and everyone actually learns more, Ts included! #LearnLAP
A4 student-led classrooms are very efficient Ss take ownership of their learning & make new discoveries they are efficient they are low maintenance they rely on the teacher less and less and learn more and more and the excitement that is created in the room is priceless!#learnLap
A4: benefits of a student-led classroom
For Ss: retention of info, responsibility, and problem solving
For Ts: more time for observations, feedback, and improvement on craft
#LearnLAP
A4: The biggest complaint I hear from colleagues is that students don’t care, they sit on their phones all thru class, and are lazy. A student-led room allows students to determine their own path and engages them in the material. We have to make it RELEVANT for them! #LearnLAP
A2: Ts Listen to Ss and provide them with voice & choice in order to empower them & provide multiple opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning. There is collaboration, inspiration, motivation & dedication throughout the room. #LearnLAP
A4. So many benefits! Ss feel a sense of purpose as they become personal stakeholders in their learning. Ss are motivated & productive as they retain more information. Ss are also learning to to be proactive leaders & work collaboratively with their peers. #LearnLAP
A4: Ok, I'm supposed to limit this to a tweet?! Benefit: S engagement, active learning, self-regulation and monitoring, better analysis and argument skills, improved soft skills needed for career/college readiness.... I could go on.... #learnlap
A4: I see too many Ss lose their love of learning in school. School has to change! I want Ss to trust themselves when they experiment & learn new things. I want Ss to know themselves as passionate, creative, empathetic beings that share their voice w/ the world. #LearnLAP
A4: Ss gain confidence, are more willing to take risks and participate. Ss gain leadership skills and deepen their empathy towards each other. Ts can spend more time individually helping Ss rather then while group instruction. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A4: benifits from a student led classroom is engaged students and building a growth mindset and culture in your classroom. Ss that learn, and share with other Ss build a sense of community and empathy.
A4: Benefits of a student-led classroom include student empowerment, 21st century skill building, college and career readiness, and increasing student self-sufficiency that builds self-confidence to name a few #LearnLAP
It's often a misconception that a student-centered classroom is chaotic. When you have structure and routines, the students take over and it becomes a well-oiled machine. #LearnLAP
This is an awesome share. We hang onto the appearance of control out of a fear of being out of control. It has been so much more fun for everyone and more productive since becoming more student-led. #LearnLAP
A3: ss develop skills that are necessary to survive in the real world rather than play the game of school. They see strengths and realize they can do real things with great passion! #LearnLAP
A4: Ss thinking outside the box. Making connections they may not have made in a teacher led lecture. Using sources to draw their own conclusions. Even if they are wrong they are trying and another S may be there for an assist. #LearnLAP
A4 Student lead = student buy-in, student voice, deep learning and maturing. It allows more prescriptive focus by the teacher and more observation for formative feedback and teaching. #learnlap
#LearnLAP A4a Because they’re actively engaged in the learning process, students in a student-led classroom retain information better. Students are able to practice problem-solving and collaboration skills.
That’s so true! I was so scared to take statistics last semester in grad school, but it changed my life and I’m a data scientist now! His curriculum was set and there was no participation component but we still felt ownership over our performance somehow. #learnlap
A4 - When students feel a sense of ownership, they become invested and engaged in what they're doing, even if it's not within what they previously thought they were interested in #learnlap
A4: a student led classroom freed up my time to have more discussions with Ss and provide more feedback. Students learned to help and respect one another to build a learning community. #LearnLAP
A4 Ss will find their voice, take leadership roles, and become engaged in their learning. I hope that my Ss will take this to become leaders in their community as part of my Civ/Econ course.
#LearnLAP
A3-#LearnLAP I threw AR out the window after spring break & told the students we were experimenting with #thereadingbucketlist. I’ve asked them to do new things so I had to let go of control and thinking I had all the answers. Took me 3 years to even try it. #vulnerability#tlap
A3b - Giving up control doesn’t mean not teaching. It means you value the perspective of kids and view their opinions. Also, more often than not, the freedom you give students allows for incredible relationship building. #learnlap
A4: Some +'s of a student-led classroom:
* Ss stay engaged
* Develop independence/prob-solving skills
* Pace is set by Ss so Ts don't have to worry about differentiation
#LearnLAP
A4: Benefits of having a S-Led CR: Ss become leaders, become more aware of others' differing opinions and react intellectually, develop more empathy, learn to collaborate effectively, reflect and self-evaluate #learnlap
A4: See A3. Students look forward to come to class. They feel free to express themselves and take risks. EMPOWERMENT is something that is experienced on a daily basis. Many times, students will give up their free-period during lunch to come and work on their projects. #LearnLAP
A3: Some worries include fear of losing "control," classroom management, meeting school standards/expectations, and managing assessment/grading. We can dispel these worries by opening up our classroom doors to model. And by coaching others through small steps at a time. #LearnLAP
A4: Ss gain confidence, are more willing to take risks and participate. Ss gain leadership skills and deepen their empathy towards each other. Ts can spend more time individually helping Ss rather then while group instruction. #LearnLAP
A4 Student engagement and info. retention. When there is a discussion about a topic students are able to make important connections. They are able to learn from their peers and see info from other's perspective. It also teaches the students great commun. skills. #learnlap
#learnlap A1 A quality teacher creates a team with his/ her classes. I have been lucky enough to have my McKee Kids! These kids feel that they are part of a special group that are important in their own right.
A4: The Ss are more engaged, the learning is more permanent and let me tell you how great it is for differentiation!!! I loved creating choice boards and thinking about activities that would challenge the strongest ones while making others to support some strugglers! #LearnLAP
A1. Better relationships with students. When you are not at the front of the classroom, you have more time to conference 1:1 or in small groups. You get to know their academic proficiencies and gaps as well as their passions and quirks! #LearnLAP
A4: When Ss take ownership of their own learning, it becomes more relevant to them and they begin to develop a greater sense of responsibility!! Ts benefit by having more time for goal setting with students and providing powerful feedback! #learnlap
A4: Ss are actually learning, thinking, engaged, discovering, learning the process, learning errors and what not to do next time, actually using their brain! 🙆♂️ Learning is not regurgitating one correct answer. 🙅🏻♀️ #learnlap
A3- I think a big fear I had was that I would become unimportant in my classroom and that my S’s wouldn’t need me. Truth is I am able to know my S’s deeper bc our convos are in smaller groups and focused on their specific needs. #LearnLAP
A4. A Ss led classroom allows the Ss to take charge of their own learning controlling the amount of learning, setting goals, where they feel they need improvement, setting objectives to reach for the year! #learnlap
A5. We can involve our Ss more by allowing them to discuss and perform activities that they are truly interested and have had say in choosing and creating. Leading and helping design the classroom flow and norms will create a sense of home and family. #LearnLAP
A4. Benefits of Having a Student-Led Classroom:
♥️Gives students voice & choice
♥️Makes learning more fun for kids & teaching (facilitating) more fun for teachers
♥️Fosters teamwork
♥️Creates a positive culture & safe learning environment
♥️Makes school fun!

* a fun class.
* happy kids
* happy teachers
* happy admin
* happy parents #learnlap
In science we do activity before content (ABC), when content comes "just in time" to when students need the info and they have struggled and experimented with concept already they remember #learnlap
A5. An excellent way to involve Ss more is to provide them with opportunities to choose their own learning path. My go to is PBL, where Ss work in groups collaboratively. In #LearnLAP I loved the idea of Responsibility Partners for collaboration during individual projects.
A4: Ss will feel like their opinion matters and be willing to share their thoughts more frequently. Ss will also take more ownership of their learning and feel empowered bout the decisions being made. They will feel part of the process. #LearnLAP
A5: Learning should be connected to what they are passionate about whenever possible. Doing #geniushour activities or differentiating assessment strategies can involve more students when they know they have a voice or choice in their learning. #learnlap
A4: Benefits for Ss are a deeper understanding of content & life skills- collaboration, leadership, problem solving. Ts have fewer behavior issues #LearnLAP
A5: @JoyKirr taught me to #ShiftThis when planning lessons. I started planning lessons with the question, “How can I shift this slightly to allow more choice and voice?” With a little practice, I found ways to alter my lesson to allow more experimenting & doing. #LearnLAP
A3- I think a big fear I had was that I would become unimportant in my classroom and that my S’s wouldn’t need me. Truth is I am able to know my S’s deeper bc our convos are in smaller groups and focused on their specific needs. #LearnLAP
A5 Ss become invested when they know they can help solve a problem. Create (productive) controversy, dialogue and discourse in the room--and then let them figure it out! #learnlap
A3: I was always exhausted from “being in control”. Ts fear bad happening (ie chaos) so they reject the concept of student led. We have to let them sample it and give examples of not only our own enjoyment, but happiness & productivity of Ss. Let them dip their toes in. #LearnLAP
A5 Involving the students isn't that diff. By just allowing them to have a voice and be able to comm. what they are learning, allows them to be more involved. Listening to what they have to say n allowing them to reflect on their own understanding. #learnlap
A5 practice makes permanent the more they do the more they learn sitting & looking is not as meaningful and personal as creating and injecting passion into something when Ss have a chance to create they develop learning experiences #learnLap
A5 I work with emergent readers and I am always telling them that the more parts of our body we are using, the more our learning sticks. Eyes, ears, mouth, and hands. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A5 We can involve our students more by providing hands-on activities and opportunities to engage with their peers. In my classroom, I like to ripple questions during whole group instruction as well as have students teach their neighbors.
#LearnLAP A3: I think some teachers don't feel like they are doing their job if they aren't in front of the class talking. Not true! Our job is to build learners, curiosity seekers and problem solvers. So let's just present the questions and let go...
A5: For math, valuing their input before giving them a procedure/formula. Not treating them like robots who perform calculations but rather having them make connections, finding other ways to solve, etc. #learnlap
A5: Let Ss lead their own learning seminars for their classmates! They get to choose what they teach about...and students get to sign up for the seminars that they are most interested in learning more about! #learnlap
Q5 - Less teacher talk, more active learning. MINI lessons, more time for student exploration and practice. Don’t hand students the answers, guide them to find the answers for themselves. #LearnLAP
A5: simply ask them. Oh, and don’t say no, lol! I use a google form a lot to gauge a variety of things. Especially because it gives me a pretty graph to look at, lol! Already asked them to make me a graph that looks like a chocolate cake. Didn’t hear back yet, lol. #LearnLAP
A5 - Make learning an instrindic driver, rather than letters or percentages. Start early in the year and be persistent in your desire to help kids think differently. #learnlap
A5: Involve Ss more by allowing them to teach others. Encourage Ss to find answers on their own, instead of just being told. Even have Ss ask their own questions! #LearnLAP
A4: Benefits:
🙌 Empowers Ss with skills to learn for LIFE
🙌 Promotes collaboration, interaction, and awareness of the responsibility of one’s actions in the environment and on others
🙌 Supports a #growthmindset
🙌 Gives Ss freedom to face challenges and take risks
#LearnLAP
A5: Teachers can involve sts more by allowing them to teach a mini lesson. Sometimes sts can learn more from their peers than they can a teacher. They have a way of speaking in a language their peers understand. #LearnLAP
A5: as a history teacher I love simulations, quests, mystery bags, room transformations. We did Westward expansion and Black Death transformation. We did a Black Death simulation to see how quickly it spread followed by a blog post. It was great fun!! #LearnLAP
#learnlap A1: qualities for a teacher should be patience, love of learning, and the willingness to share that love with others. The traits that work for me are being honest and teaching with integrity, commitment to the school community, and delegation and empowering the students
A5: Allow Ss to teach others, have them share with others outside of their classroom what they are learning, and provide them an opportunity for a global collaboration. #LearnLAP
A5: I try to involve all Ss by giving them choice in process, project, and presentation. It is important for Ss to feel safe + comfortable in order to take risks + do their best work. So I let them chose how and 99% of the time it is better then I would have imagined #LearnLAP
A5: Asking Questions! (Especially true in math) I love having them to figure it out and refusing to give them the answer... maybe none of you have learned how to do this yet but those 30 minds together can surely put the pieces together. Helps build class community too! #LearnLAP
A5 Lsiten, take rsponses to drive the process. S answers provide great exemplars and fantastic opportunities for learning. Start by making a safe place to be wrong & celebrate the prcoess from wrong to right. It builds deep understanding and contextual relevance. #learnlap
A4- The benefits are so many- I don't have to worry about so many little things now! The Ss have it covered! Sometimes I dont' think i need to be there! #learnLAP
A5: Teachers can involve sts more by allowing them to teach a mini lesson. Sometimes sts can learn more from their peers than they can a teacher. They have a way of speaking in a language their peers understand. #LearnLAP
A5: Ss should never be in their seats the entire class period and my voice should never be the only one heard. Students need authentic learning experiences—some of the best learning in my room comes from seminars, poetry slams, art competitions, and QR code hunts #LearnLAP
A3: The myths that the room will be chaotic, there will be no way to collect grades, how will I maintain order, how will anything get accomplished, what if my colleagues get upset that I’m doing this? You never know unless you try. . . #LearnLAP
If you'd like to connect with other educators at your grade level who have read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and are implementing ideas from the book, add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
A3 Student-led class was scary because I had to release my power or control I had over my kids. But once I did, the discipline issues decreased dramatically #LearnLAP
A6: I haven't really given Ss feedback bc the only time I've been in a class is for observations and didn't get a chance to interact with Ss much.... looking forward to reading everybody's responses though #LearnLAP
A5: We must hook our Ss, pique their curiosity, share with them the standard and/or objective of their learning, and let them go. Of course, we build a firm foundation up front so our Ss can make wise choices. #learnlap
A3b: Ts also fear that they won’t “do it right” so they plan and plan so it will be “perfect”. The learning for Ts and Ss is in the mess and trust in the process. #LearnLAP
A6. Ahh Feedback! This is my personal goal for this school year. I have struggled to take the time to give personal feedback to each one of Ss. I plan to use @Flipgrid to provide informal video feedback throughout the year. I also use @Seesaw for Ss-led conferences! #LearnLAP
A6 I give my Ss feedback daily! In Readers Workshop during conferring, Writers Workshop, in math I create personalized playlists on @Schoology w/completion rules in place so auto feedback there... etc etc #LearnLap
Q5: The main evaluation tool in our classrooms should no longer be tests—students should be actively researching, questioning, blogging, creating, presenting, writing, and teaching their peers. I plan to create a project for every unit this year- no more tests. #LearnLAP
A6: I give Ss feedback through conferring, while observing, through technology in @Classkick and @Flipgrid and even when I have a lunch group meeting with me. #LearnLAP
A5: I have student 'teach days', when the Ss get to teach a mini-lesson to the class, on a skill at their mastery level. It gives the other Ss a chance to learn from another person & the S that is 'teaching' gets to practice that skill and presentation skills. #LearnLap
A6: Finding the good in even the worst of situation can be helpful. If we can mine the positives, that will give us a starting point for building for the future. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A5: I have been a fan of @Sugatam and his Self Organized Learning Environments. Students self organize to learn beyond the curriculum. Ss have questions and they get to explore the answers.
A5: Empower Ss with an active role in various stages of learning, including: thinking about, planning, modifying, and creating. Allow students multiple ways to apply their understanding of concepts through the construction of their projects/play. #LearnLAP
A6- Feedback should be a living, growing entity- It occurs in student-led conferences, daily RESET time, in small groups, on collaborative assignments, and on student reflections sheets! #learnLap
#LearnLAP A6 I believe HOW feedback is given is key. I make a point to sit side-by-side with the s at her work space. I also like to start with some questions; feedback has been more effective when I have an understanding of a student’s goal and how she feels about her work.
#LearnLAP A3: This has been said several times, but I worry about wrangling a group of students possibly working with loud materials back in to focus on information that necessarily has to go from me to them. I do plan to keep several musical instruments handy.
A6: In the past, my feedback has included questions that encourage sts to think about a problem differently. After reading this book, I will also include feedback about their 21st century skills as well #LearnLAP
A5: Ss become more involved when they are motivated, inspired, intrigued, and empowered. We have to listen to what they want to share before we can make decisions about how we think they learn best. #LearnLAP
A6: Feedback is crucial to S learning and should be a priority in any classroom. Ss are more engaged w/ Ts they trust. Providing good feedback helps Ss build community necessary for good learning. #learnlap
I was so afraid of this too, but what I have found is that they are hitting it every time and I actually am getting a better image of where there are gaps in their learning because it shows up in the products. #LearnLAP
A6 feedback & reflection should be a constant Ss thrive on feedback they want to Excel & succeed they desire feedback to drive them to reach their goals feedback given digitally through Google Classroom on forms on exit tickets face to face or in groups keep it constant #learnLap
A6 - We do a daily Reflection Easel of Excellence. Feedback is always positive and is on a document do they always have it. Of course, verbal praise is great, but it has to more than just “good job!” I love to write, so that really helps. Also, doing videos is fun. #learnlap
A6: I give Ss feedback through 1:1 meetings at my feedback table, through small groups, through Google as they are working on something. I try to speak to every Ss twice before they leave the classroom. #LearnLAP
A6 having a 1 min or less conference” with students-checking in and seeing how the student is doing- if S is on task- give them praise and pose a ? to further their inquiry. /1 #Learnlap
I use the Walt Disney quote from Meet The Robinson's. "Keep moving forward!" I used his quote as a final farewell to my 8th graders that I taught for the past two years, and some of my floor hockey players i had for 3 years. Few tears were shed. #LearnLAP

A3 We really don't have "control" over anyone. As educators, we shouldn't think of it as control. Once we change that mindset, life is so much better! 😊 #LearnLAP
A6: Feedback is when someone comes alongside you and says, Hey you're doing great...I wonder how we can ______ even better?
You invite Ss into the feedback chat. Love have @MrazKristine does this when conferring in reading. #LearnLAP
A6: My best feedback seems to happen in the ELA areas. They're not grade focused and I find it easier to comment on behaviors I've observed them use effectively or give nudges where needed. I need to do this more in Math. Make it less about grades. #learnlap
A6 I believe it is import. to give Ss feedback whenever you can! It is highly import to give more positive feedback then negative. Instead of neg feedback it should be an opportunity to have an open discuss. about the Ss thought process. #learnlap
A6: I love watching confidence grow with positive feedback. I had 2 girls that just really liked to work by my desk so I could give a quick yes/no when they were unsure. Then I’d ease up since I want them to know they can do it without me, and reward the independence! #LearnLAP
A6- I really try to use a “feed forward” model where I am not telling S’s what to fix but instead having a conversation with them about how to move forward in their learning to be successful #LearnLAP
A6: After giving my students a mini DBQ one of Qs was not measured where I wanted, I fessed up to my students and told them what I was looking for and as a whole we worked backwards and designed a better question. Yeah I messed up. #Learnlap
@PaulSolarz A4- I’m learning that students can come up better ideas than I can! Less stress & planning for me. More student ownership of learning. More student voices being heard in a positive context. #LearnLAP
A6: I give Ss 1:1 feedback as often as time permits, also digitally through our LMS. I also love using @Flipgrid to give Ss feedback - it's a great tool for that! #LearnLAP
A6 - One way I give my students feedback is through ePortfolio posts (verbally, written & a checklist). Here's one of my students' ePortfolios from the past year: https://t.co/ZGTBxaEmnY#LearnLAP
A6- I use comments in Google Docs, etc to provide feedback. I try to meet with Ss during class time 1:1 and provide general feedback or answer Qs from students on any topic, class-related or not.
#LearnLAP
A6 using @Seesaw this year was helpful for me to provide feedback to Ss & parents. When I don't have time to conference with everyone, I write on sticky notes in the kids' journals & notebooks. 3rd graders love getting notes from their teacher & many write replies! #LearnLAP
A6: feedback or feed forward as I learned on #cultofpedagogy is so meaningful to Ss. It needs to be instant and real. I love conferencing with Ss and also allowing Ss to provide peer feedback. We often times stop to pitch our ideas to gain insight in the CR. #LearnLAP
A6: One of the challenges of student-led classrooms is giving feedback to EVERY S without running out of time or burning out, @JoyKirr gave me a suggestion at #iste18 to conference with #geniushour Ss every other week! (alternate Ss). #learnlap
My biggest fear is how do I link curriculum into instruction but maintain the PLC process of being a priority school with my grade level team and stay on the same page. #learnLAP
A6: Feedback is super important. However, relationships are essential. In reading and writing workshop, feedback is given most often through #conferring. Feedback is just ONE part of conferring, though. It's so much more. https://t.co/sWLRNXPnH6#LearnLAP#tcrwp
A6. Feedback, I like 1:1 best! If working with a Ss in math whose struggling using mult. chart., let's try just covering it with your hand and taking a chance! To help them build some confidence! #learnlap
A5: Get them out of their seats! Especially early or late in the day. It's also amazing how far playing the name game on the first day can go (even in uni!). Team-building cannot be understated, you'll learn more around those who are comfortable challenging you. #LearnLAP
A6 As a music teacher. every minute is about feedback.... We don't always use it or do it the best. That's the KEY. Quality feedback matters. Sometimes its a quick fix and we talk too much. Sometimes iit's a complex fix and we fail to provide context. Hone your skills! #learnlap
A6: One of the challenges of student-led classrooms is giving feedback to EVERY S without running out of time or burning out, @JoyKirr gave me a suggestion at #iste18 to conference with #geniushour Ss every other week! (alternate Ss). #learnlap
I've noticed since I've been doing it more in math it really opens up my eyes to their thinking process & in math there's so many ways to think about problems. It truly has been eye opening & made me a better math teacher #LearnLAP
A6b. I also love using tools like @Flipgrid or @KaizenaHQ to give audio or visual feedback. Writing on a paper can be overlooked and left behind. Your voice is real and has authenticity. Ss can respond back. #learnlap
I did this too this year! It was life-changing. We forget the kids sometimes afraid of adults. When we ask them "Can I give you my opinion?" they beam!! #LearnLAP
A7: I'd love to have Ss do the little administrative tasks like taking roll and getting supplies ready.
I also liked the Gimme 5 and would love to see Ss lead each other in learning #LearnLAP
A4: Benefit for me-comfort with not being responsible for doing it all and I have actually been able to better see gaps in Ss learning when they create products rather than them working in something I created. Other big benefits-trust, community, engagement, attendance #LearnLAP
A7 Student lead sectionas, peer teaching, choice in phrasing and ,musicality. All of these help develop strong, independent performers but more importantly, well rounded musicians. #learnlap
A6: I Provide my Ss with feedback every opportunity I get. It may be related to academic, social, or personal goals they are working on. I try to make it verbal & written. It’s specific so they know exactly what I’m referencing & what they need to do about it. #LearnLAP
A7: I have Ss learn a new skill to become the expert. In turn they go to a struggling S and coach them on what they learned to encourage others to try out what they learned. #LearnLAP
A7 - Do great work for you is one of our first Mantras for the year. We try to put the onus on kids to take ownership from the beginning. Also, Hyperdocs and slides can really allow kids to explore ideas outside of the typical lessons. #LearnLAP
A7: I did daily choice boards this past year and peer tutoring was ALWAYS an option. There were those that could tutor every topic but I loved watching a leader develop when a topic clicked for a S and they wanted to step up and teach their friends! #LearnLAP
I find it hard to zip it when I see a group going down a dead end. Those are the times I want to offer feedback but #LearnLAP reminds us to let them make mistakes and persevere on their own. I think it's great you ask because some Ss may not be ready for feedback yet.
A7. Morning Meetings! My Ss select a quote or write their own morning message to greet the class. When we meet, they greet one another, share, and then one students leads us through the meeting. My Ss also lead through their PBLs. They work collaboratively to solve it! #LearnLAP
A7. Since I don’t have a student-led class(yet), my Ss know the opening routine of class without me having to say anything, they are great at peer assessment, carrying out labs, and Ss go to one another for absent work and become filled in on the previous day’s learning #LearnLAP
A6: I♥️giving kids feedback verbally, esp. if it’s where they improved. Their faces light up & that lights up my♥️! If they haven’t done well on something, I focus on what they got RIGHT—not what they got wrong. Yes, I re-teach, but want to keep their confidence up! #LearnLAP
A7: My students participate in class discussions about a specific topic or question. They also work together on projects and present them to the class #LearnLAP
A6 it depends what we are doing. I can give oral feedback daily to the students. I would like to focus on written feedback more. Often times though I find students don't bother to read the feedback which is frustrating. #LearnLAP
A7: the Ss in room 303 help each other through tech issues, ask each other questions, did peer reviews on blog postings, and designed rubrics to help grade their projects. #LearnLAP
I think we all struggle with that because we were all taught to avoid mistakes. I love letting them go down that road and waiting for the moment when the cognitive dissonance hits them. THAT'S true engaged learning! #learnlap
I find it hard to zip it when I see a group going down a dead end. Those are the times I want to offer feedback but #LearnLAP reminds us to let them make mistakes and persevere on their own. I think it's great you ask because some Ss may not be ready for feedback yet.
A7: Choosing what they want to read, choosing how they respond to text, choosing where and how they will learn best in a flexible seating environment, choosing an audience to share their learning with, offering questions for us to explore together... #LearnLAP
A7: My kiddos are assigned JOBS that they are responsible for ensuring get done each day. Athough, anyone can do any job." Here's how they use it: https://t.co/69XulmyWNJ#LearnLAP
A7- I have lots of room to grow in this. PBL and Genius Hour were my first real cracks at this. I have loved to see even my shyest S’s lead when in small group situations! #LearnLAP
A7: We let our students play the role of "local expert" in our Lab. When they have figured out a shortcut or a solution that is stumping another team, I will call them over and let them be the guide, share their expertise, or problem solve. #LearnLAP
A6 - One way I give my students feedback is through ePortfolio posts (verbally, written & a checklist). Here's one of my students' ePortfolios from the past year: https://t.co/ZGTBxaEmnY#LearnLAP
oh, but risk taking seems to cost points and it is assumed that all students start at the same point so all teachers can be equally evaluated to the same level of S control. Some S need to be taught how first so it's a longer learning curve #learnlap
#LearnLAP A7 We have classroom jobs for non-instructional tasks; in the morning and at the end of the day, when it’s time to to jobs, students take responsibility for a variety of tasks that make our classroom run smoothly.
Well...ok. Dale did not assign percentages to his levels. In fact, Dale's Cone did not have the same terms per level on his cone. This pyramid is extremely harmful in our classroom. #learnlap
A7: Ss often step up and direct others in the right direction. I just need to harness this power and let them take the lead in a more formalized manner. #learnlap
A7: My kiddos do similar routines and rituals on a regular basis, making it easy for them to lead that portion of the day." Here's how they use it: https://t.co/UYjK6auid2#LearnLAP
A7: This year I allowed Ss to lead warm-ups or technique exercises during rehearsals. I also encourage Ss to ask & help classmates when possible #LearnLAP
A7: Ss can lead when given opportunities to step up. Ss also demonstrate leadership when they willingly take the role in a task without being asked to. Before ANY of this can occur, they must feel safe & encouraged to do so. It’s our responsibility to do that for them. #LearnLAP
A6: As a TA I made a point to write a good comment for every bad comment on lab reports I graded. Amazingly difficult, but went a very long way with my students, who told me specifically that they appreciated it. #LearnLAP
A7 They have lots of power. The power to get the class's attention was HUGE. They'll stop, do a callback & tell their peers something cool they've noticed. They have all the jobs in our class. I don't do much. 😉 #LearnLAP
A7 It didn't take long, but when they had enough practice, they lead our discussions, our calendar, our projects, our team, without any permission :) Super proud of them! #LearnLAP
A7. Morning Meetings! My Ss select a quote or write their own morning message to greet the class. When we meet, they greet one another, share, and then one students leads us through the meeting. My Ss also lead through their PBLs. They work collaboratively to solve it! #LearnLAP
A5: Ss are more involved when we let them design lessons, instruction, and assessment from learning objectives; show them thy we trust them and are all better when everyone is involved. make everything about them in the room and the learning. #LearnLAP
A7: My Ss have voice and choice to make decisions, but I need to give them more. My CR has moved away from the raise your hand if model in direct instruction to a more informal say what you need to say while being respectful of others. I still have work to do. #learnlap
I had Student-led warm ups- group responses. I would try to let one group each week review answers, discuss alternative view points or create real-world connections.
#LearnLAP
Yes, @MrSpicerTweets! We have to be risk-takers, too. It's not always easy, but it's so, so worth it (and it becomes more and more intuitive the more we do it)! 🌟#LearnLAP
A7: In my current classroom, leadership is a choice for students. Opportunities are available to lead within collaborative groups or during class discussions. Goal for next yr is to build intentional leadership opportunities for EVERY student—esp my fellow introverts #LearnLAP
a7: starting from the beginning of the year teaching them to lead & have ownership
many of my kids have never had this, they are the kids who struggle with school and behavior, so always get T/admin control #learnlap
A7 Students lead through class discussions, collaborative groups, PBL, student teaching, reading of objectives, labs, etc. I do need to work on more routines for next year. It is a work in progress. #LearnLAP
A8. I hope to get a fully, realized idea of what I want my student-led classroom to feel and look like and then put it into motion come Fall! I am so ready to jump on the ship with my crew and #LearnLAP with them.
A6: I give feedback all sorts of ways, but I love telling them personally when they have done great. We also started to use flipgrid last year, but I didn't do to well with it ☹️ Mini goal for this next year! #LearnLAP
A7 - The focus here is really how teaching is changing for the better. This is my 29th year and it’s so inspiring all the great things that are going on. We are allowing kids to find their voice and also to develop skills that they will always have. #teachpos#learnlap
#LearnLAP A7: Present the standard and ask the students how they want to learn it and how they will be able to know they have learned it. Then how they could imagine using this new knowledge. No more "When are we ever going to need this" responses.
A6: After giving my students a mini DBQ one of Qs was not measured where I wanted, I fessed up to my students and told them what I was looking for and as a whole we worked backwards and designed a better question. Yeah I messed up. #Learnlap
A7 Student bloggers @Kidblog@flipgrid for peer to peer feedback Student guest tweeters student tech teams to solve tech problems student-led tours of the school during open house or to introduce new Ss to the campus student created expectations for Behavior #learnLap
A8: I want to get ideas for how to make a math class more student led, and I definitely want to read about how others have implemented a student led class #LearnLAP
A8: By the end of the book, I hope to have a vision in place to have a successful student-led classroom this coming year. It's a lot to think about and ponder, but they're worth it. #learnlap
I think part of learning like a pirate is leaning into your community of learners. Oftentimes, you don't know what you don't know until someone shows you a blindspot. I heard a lot of things tonight I'd never have thought of, and I hope to learn more! #learnlap#grateful
A7-Give the students the Big Idea that will be explored and ask students for input on ways to explore the big idea so it is not a one size fits all. #LearnLap
More ideas and ways to help my students with their ownership of their learning, they so resist it b/c it is new and scary for them, so they often act out (early on) to make it stop. #learnlap
A8. I love #LearnLAP it has provided me with a variety of resources and my mind is buzzing with ideas for next school year already! I have already set a few goals: personalize my student feedback, transition from a Ss-centered to a Ss-led, implement responsibility partners....
A8: I am really just hoping to learn and grow as a new educator, whatever that means for me. I have done a lot of reading and tweeting this year but I’m hoping to get new ideas and inspiration to make the coming school year great! #LearnLAP
Q8 - I hope to have some comfort in giving up control and embracing the chaos and noise in my classroom. I hope #LearnLAP gives me ideas where I won’t need to re-create all of my units, rather gain ideas and inspiration to make small changes with maximum impact. #LearnLAP
A8: I hope to find the courage to give up some control, to trust that my students will learn everything they need to learn because they're in a place where they ask the questions and they have the tools to find the answers. #LearnLAP
A8 New ideas, challeneges to my way of thinking, opportunities to discuss thoughts and grow as a teacher through reflection, evlauation, and dialogue. #learnlap

A8: This is the year that I am challenging myself to truly get out of my comfort zone and blog about my journey of risk taking. I hope that #LearnLAP will help me to prepare for this upcoming school year and this journey.
Yep. It's a me problem. Also, when we know our Ss well enough, we know when to let them struggle for that moment or when it's time to jump in and offer some support. #LearnLAP
A8: I am moving in the right direction and am inspired by student centered and student led CRs I want to provide my Ss with the best learning environment possible. I am excited to continue this book journey with #LearnLAP group
A8: I would like to learn how to create more or a student-led classroom. I teach at an online school, so that can be challenging, but I can still use the ideas in this book #LearnLAP
A8: I’ve already finished the book, I’ll say what I hope to get from the #LearnLAP study. Hope to grow my PLN with like minded educators across the country & learn from Ts already using a student-led model in their classrooms. Also reflect on what I’ve read to reinforce learning.
Don't forget the #LearnLAP companion website as you read for dozens of blog posts, videos, & photos that support the reading! https://t.co/EgBO5zgLP3
Frequently Asked Questions (answered by my students) here: https://t.co/IkyZoInp2C
A7: Lots of leading in stations, Ss choice during activities, #seesaw, kids teaching/learning with each other, Let me get out of the way while my Ss learn 😆 #LearnLap
#LearnLap Thank you all for this incredible chat! I can tell I will be communicating and connecting with a lot of you this year and beyond. Thanks @PaulSolarz for this beginning journey to incredible teaching and learning that I am embarking on.
A7: As 5th graders, we are the examples to all the other grades in our school. We 'mshow the way' all the time, in the hall, in assemblies, in our weekly Good Morning Meeting with the entire school, and when we are off campus! #LearnLap
A8: I am hopeful by reading LearnLAP I will be able to create a TRUE student-led classroom where Ss are actively engaged and everyone feels empowerment to be a leader. I want a sub to come into my class and it runs so smooth by my Ss that they leave impressed. #LearnLAP
A8- I want to let go of the Captain's chair, let the Ss in my Honors classes steer their ship for each unit, reaching Essent. Q via their own path.
I want to build up group and communication skills in my other classes and slowly give them power by winter break
