I'm looking forward to tonight's #bcedchat. Co-modding with @brynmw (#brynges) and we're talking about Summer Learning.
I'm Christine from the Sunshine Coast. Educator & Researcher. Let's do this.
A super sunny Sunday... and #HappyFathersDay
Hope you can have a moment to say hello and join #bcedchat with me and @brynmw tonight.
Let's talk Summer Learning.
A1. My summer holiday does not begin until August... I'm a sessional and teaching the summer session. It will be my daughter's last day of classes tomorrow. Maybe... CLEAN THE HOUSE. #goodtimes#bcedchat
A1: If the first day is June 21st, I'll be checking my school for the day ahead (we are on until June 28th). If it is the first 'Day of Summer", then I will be looking forward to connecting with family. #bcedchat
A1: On the first day of summer I hope to sleep a bit, go for a hike with my kids and husband and hopefully start the first book on my long list of summer reading! #bcedchat
I keep missing #bcedchat but not tonight!
Will keep an eye on the conversation & reply where I can. I suspect it'll be like the only time I played hockey - by the time I got to the puck, it was already somewhere else.
A1: My summer started about 2 weeks ago but I have been busy writing curriculum with my district specialist for next school year. I do have Friday’s off and I spend it with my two girls! ❤️ #Read5305#bcedchat

I am going to start with a non education book- something I hope to do as GRA next year "Amal Unbound" :-) I need at least a week though before I start reading Ed books. #bcedchat
Summer is the time for a teacher to put himself first. Sometimes we need to let go, meditate and relax, put home projects on hold for at least a week and fucus on us! Hope I am mot being selfish. #BCedchat

A2: Hoping to go on a little tour of BC by myself to meet up f2f with some of the twitter people I have enjoyed following this year. Just a plan in my head right now but think it would be fun. #bcedchat
A2 still working on it. Lots of day trips and excursions with the kids. We have to sit down and make a wish list together and then we will map out some ideas beyond our family holidays. #bcedchat
A2: Eight kinder and 1st teachers from our school will be learning @OpalSchool in Portland next week. We are thrilled for this opportunity! Then more travel to Cape Cod on the east coast. Then back to Hawaii for ocean, beach, reading and friends. #bcedchat
A2. Nothing planned for the summer... except teaching at the university. Maybe write (and research). It will be a lay-low summer. Travelled a lot during the new year. Vegas in the winter. Possibly STAYCATIONING. #bcedchat

So true. Plan and unplan. UBC has a few good workshops to go to via @UBC_PDCE ... I'm scouting some of them. Haven't registered yet. Needing to lay low. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: week one-work and week 2 is to head to Kelowna for some personal pro-d-excited to take part in that--read for pleasure--figuring out which book to start with--irst day will go to the gym for 6am-wierd, yes-but feels so great when you can go home and do anything
A2: I start back middle of August this year 1 week at Science World first then 2 weeks at school before the September start. So I hope to spend lots of family time, get lots of sleep and reading in this summer. #bcedchat

A3: summer learning means finding PD to expand my knowledge on reading but also on other aspects of teaching. Always room to grow and learn!!! #Read5305#bcedchat
A3 i am working on my core competencies, i look at the year that was, the year that will be, think about my health and looking for sun and water #bcedchat
A3: Looking back on the year and doing some evaluating of how it went, living in the moment and appreciating the here and now, and reading some books about education from the people that inspire me. #bcedchat

A3: Summer learning is about choice to me. I’m so excited to read both ed and non ed books ( is anything really ever non ed?). I’m aware of how excited I am to learn and explore the things I choose. This makes me circle back to my students and their need for choice. #bcedchat
So I can recommend and chose read alouds I hope to read all of the options on the Global Read Aloud List- currently reading Refugee to my classroom, incredible. For PD- I have Innovators Mindset by @gcouros Culturize by @casas_jimmy Walking Curriculum by @perfinker#bcedchat

A3 I try to shut my brain off but it usually doesn’t work so I just go with it. This year I may be changing grades so it’ll mean wrapping my head around some new ideas and brainstorming what things might look like while reading some books I’ve been wanting to read. #bcedchat
A3: Also want to read @RosePillay1 's blog and her cc work, and look into the findings of @ChristineYH because the work that she did for her doctorate is really interesting. #bcedchat
A3: Summer learning is tackling my reading list, reflecting on the past year and planning for the upcoming one. I start a new role and am so excited for the learning curve that I know is coming up. #bcedchat
A3: Summer learning means taking time to read and enhance the skills that I struggle with most during the year. It's all about best suiting my needs and working to become the best teacher I can be #bcedchat
Amazing how much of my reading has shifted to ongoing thinkings (blogs) but looking forward to sitting down to some “paper tablets” this summer! #bcedchat

What are you planning to work on this summer? What did you perceive that you had struggled with this year? We are always learning and improving. Don't pressure yourself too much. Enjoy the ride. #bcedchat
A4: I am working on creating my first lesson plans and trying out new technology tools to incorporate into my future classroom, including my first twitter chat tonight!
#bcedchat
A4: Reading, reading, reading and @OpalSchool Summer symposium and @TCRWP Reading Institute that is coming to our school. Also become familiar with the new @TCRWP Phonics Units of Study when they come out. #bcedchat
A4: I will try to explore twitter more to see how I can use it to better my students. Of course I will be trying to do this while sitting by the pool, in my hammock, or by the fire pit. #bcedchat
Love journalling. I journal via blog. I blogged initially to help me with the writing process and to have a "high stakes" component of publishing LIVE. I love doing it. #bcedchat

#bcedchat one cool aspect of my role as PD Chair is seeing all the amazing workshops and conferences colleagues are attending in the summer! UBC workshops to week-long retreats to two week French intensives and so much more!!!
I want to explore more small group learning ideas. I want to read joyful literacy, the new Adrienne gear book, become the math teacher you wish you’d had, explore Debbie drillers work, mindset stuff & seesaw. I may have to focus my list a bit. #bcedchat
A3: I find I'm most reflective at this time of year because I know the school year's drawing to an end, that summer break lies ahead. I think about what I'd like to do differently next year. I plan the year in broad strokes, then I leave it alone until mid-August. 1/ #bcedchat
Student engagement is difficult as a pre-service foreign language teacher. I find myself struggling to find different ways to teach a topic to meet the needs of all of my students. I'm testing new technology resources this summer to bring new tools into my classroom #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4: personal inquiry with topic to be more finalized in July--reading for pleasure and profession--have a mighty long list of books long overdue to be read.

A3: Different this summer because of the changes in curriculum. I'm taking a summer course to prep for a new course I'll be teaching. For my summer reading, I prefer books unrelated to education. I find I get ideas from unexpected places. #bcedchat 2/
A4: Not sure yet. Have a ton of ideas. Maybe go on courses to become proficient in French or look into M.Ed possibilities. I always try to learn something new so that I know what the process is like when I am with my ss. #bcedchat
No worries. There is no right or wrong answer. Depending how you answer questions, some questions may seem like they reiterate. Keep moving forward with #bcedchat. You are doing great!!!
A5: I’m going to keep working on my Italian. I really hope to make progress and maybe even join a “talking Italian cohort”. Also, I hope to sketch and paint a bit this summer. I am a beginner, beginner and I’m trying to get better. #bcedchat
A5: This year I lost 30lbs through healthy eating and following an exercise program. Want to continue to focus on that and increase my repertoire of healthy meals I can cook for the family. #bcedchat
A5: I hope to find my teaching style and learn to embrace it. I am also reading a few Spanish novels and working towards my goal of being bilingual #bcedchat
#bcedchat Outdoors as much as possible to learn local flora to be better prepared to share knowledge. Also, I will be hanging out on Bby Mtn to hear the stories from our Indigenous leaders at the Watch House. #protecttheinlet
#bcedchat Personal learning--finish up all the details from the fall reno--sit and float in the pool, visit with friends and family--just be in the moments--enjoy a final summer with my almost-high-school-graduate

Great to see you here, tonight, Holly. I've missed our conversations. Love your amazing work with supporting teachers through PD. Hope you have an amazing summer. #bcedchat
I’m finding a move has been great for purging (and we are taking it to a new level this month!) and I had to model “reading for pleasure” to my class of resistant readers - it’s been working as I finally had my @AdrienneGear moment a couple weeks ago: everyone reading #bcedchat
A6. I hope to tackle and complete a large (seemly endless) task in a timely manner. Referring back to previous answers... a PILE of books to read for pleasure... PURGE the house of crap... and WRITE a book. Small feats, right? #bcedchat
I'm fairly close now. I am still taking Spanish courses in college so I grow a little bit every day. I'm at a fairly advanced reading comprehension level so I try to read in my new language every day #bcedchat
A6 I would like to learn more about book creator and Doink I have used both but not 2 their fullest. I want to try and learn and practice work/life balance #familyime#bcedchat
I am hoping to learn to be a more realistic and relaxed teacher. To learn that my personal wellbeing determines the teaching environment I create for my students. #BCedchat
I'm not moving... but I will keep that in mind as a strategy for purging. Thanks Ian. Reading for pleasure. I'm such a non-fiction functional reader. This will be a challenge but I'm enjoying it so far. #bcedchat
The Teacher Act & Teacher Program Approval Process/Criteria used by BC Teachers' Council & Teacher Regulation Branch allow Teacher Program Admissions Requirements to be evaluated. The SCC decision re TWU Law School clarified that the TWU Community Covenant is unacceptable.
Ready Player One was a fabulous read - and I even loved the audiobook ready by @wilw - esp @ErnestCline view of what virtual schooling could be like (not shown in the movie...) #bcedchat

A tad more “traditional” - blending “set times to be in learning rooms” but the virtual field trips and potential for personalization is hinted at (and what “finish” can look like)
#bcedchat
I love watching movies in Spanish! I have found that it is more beneficial if the movie was originally in Spanish instead of relying on translations of English movies. I think you get a better sense of natural native tone from native movies #bcedchat
Q8. PLAY in your classroom... from K-12... and in higher ed. PLAY to learn and learn with your students. It's absolutely amazing and you don't know what you don't know unless you try. #bcedchat
A8 Teaching is learning journey, don't try to over do-it , have a focus for the year and then move to the next thing, perfection do not exist #bcedchat
Connect with those on these chats (especially #bcedchat) so we can continue our learning over the summer. And learning includes play and connecting and getting outside. #bcedchat
A8: I have learned that the chats on #bcedchat give me lots of life. I teach in a really small school and it has been so good to connect with others around the province and share opinions.
A7: I hope to learn how I feel most comfortable in the classroom and then how to push myself out of that safe zone to better serve my students #bcedchat

A7: I hope to learn a way, however small it may be, to funnel my deep respect and love for children and education beyond my classroom and do something to lift up, protect and enhance the lives of kids on our island, our country and the world. #bcedchat

Thank you, @ChristineYH and all the #bcedchat crew. Through difficult times, our connections make us better and stronger. We are all family and that is what makes us better. #bcedchat
