Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Hello Everyone! I am so excited to be a part of #Ksedchat tonight! Please introduce yourself & share out where you are tweeting from today. Why stop there?!?! Lets Add a Gif to that! #Ksedchat#TeachBetter

Hey! Rae here hosting #Ksedchat from Illinois! I am a 6th Grade Mean Old Math Teacher & Director of Training & Development for @teachbetterteam! Essentially, I hang with the cool kids during the day and collaborate with killer teachers by night! #BestJob#DreamJob#TeachBeter
Way too rainy. I'm not getting to enjoy "my" beach near enough. Wish I could send some to Cali or Canada. But still finding ways to enjoy my last week "off". I report next week, Ss after Labor day. #ksedchat
Q1 : Frustration! New initiatives without explanation of how they are connected to what is already occurring! Before Masting Personalized Learning, share out innovative, progressive things you are already doing! Then, lets talk about how these blend w/ our topic today! #Ksedchat
Hello, everyone! This is the official twitter account for KTEEA (Kansas Technology and Engineering Education Association). This is an organization to promote technology programs across KS. This is our first #ksedchat and will be ran by @maiseroullet for this evenings discussions!

A1: I've been on a personal Mission to try and increase student engagement in my classes. This means trying new things and taking risks. It has been so beneficial to me and my students! #ksedchat
A1
I've definitely worked hard on including more ss voice, choice and collaboration in my units. Did a full review of my standards and content and re wrote much curriculum map #ksedchat
My classroom operates within Themed Internships Sponsored by Local Businesses for each unit. This allows students to actually understand the WHY behind their learning and gain support from outside stakeholders. #LoveIthttps://t.co/70gHhE1vYW#ksedchat

A1: I use #modelinginstruction and #sbg. I don't grade homework. Ss take frequent quizzes and can reassess as many times as it takes (although I don't let them start until we've quizzed 3 times in class - many make it to mastery by that point). #ksedchat

This year I am piloting #gamification to engage Ss in their learning, our district is also moving toward essential learnings as part of our KESA process #ksedchat

A1: We have started a House System in our school to help build relationships with students and help develop student leaders! Had our first house pep rally today and it was fantastic! #ksedchat
A1: Big innovations this year is finding new avenues to tie in the local community, find civic engagement and service learning. These have immense power to to create deep & memorable learning experiences. #ksedchat
I just LOVE #SBG and how it has altered conversations in the classroom from being focused on "Task Completion" to "Developing an Understanding." Awesome to see teachers taking this shift seriously! #ksedchat

A1: hope I’m answering this right. 😆 I try to go to other teachers, ask for advice. Look for new PD opportunities. Keep in touch with an awesome PLN. Look for new ways to approach my Ss. #Ksedchat
A1: In my classroom, we are beginning the school year with primarily social-emotional learning right out of the gate in conjunction with rules and procedures and why we have them. We are doing nothing academic until after the State Fair. #ksedchat
A1: reworked curriculum to allow more voice and choice, with our block schedule some students struggle with stamina so I am breaking the block down into 2 simultaneous projects to keep the energy and enthusiasm going, less down time too. #ksedchat
A1: As our school starts its 1:1 initiative tomorrow, I'm super excited to be flipping my 6th grade classes this year. I'm also using hyperdocs, designing breakouts, planning a Shark Tank project again, and looking for more PBAs to design for my Ss to enjoy (hopefully)! #ksedchat
#ksedchat A1: its so hard to feel like i do innovative, progressive things. Hard to see the forest from the trees!! genius hour, blended learning, lit circles, 1:1 tech...
A1: Started dabbling in SBG last year. I've tried a variety of approaches in the past to reach more Ss, but now that I've seen @thegridmethod I'm totally committed. Im having a struggle rolling it out, but there's a learning curve. #ksedchat

A1 implementing concepts of sbg. Measuring success in terms of approaching, meeting, or exceeding the standard with opportunities to revise and move up the ladder after feedback. #ksedchat
Love witnessing passion for building a WHY behind learning before getting to the content. Lets engage with our community & bring Purpose to the forefront of class work #TeachBetter#ksedchat
A1: Big innovations this year is finding new avenues to tie in the local community, find civic engagement and service learning. These have immense power to to create deep & memorable learning experiences. #ksedchat
#ksedchat A1: Offering more choices of how to complete assignments. We are also using Flipgrid. We are moving to 1:1 this year, so there are many changes ahead!
A1: my fav thing is community involvement this time of year. Banks to help with classroom economy. Local ft Riley vets for veteran day interviews. Braids and books for girls as well as strong is the new pretty book study with local women #ksedchat
A1: The biggest focus I have for the year is to be purposeful with every assignment I give the students. The example given during PD today was that we shouldn’t give the kids a worksheet just to do it. Purposeful planning and intentional instruction! #ksedchat
A1: Planning to institute “Mindfulness Mondays” to offer Ss a softer start to the week and shed light on important issues. Bringing in speakers and adding some hands on activities. Hoping to get a lot of input from Ss on what they want to talk about as the year goes on #ksedchat
Judith, you Rock! Love your passion for @teachbetterteam Mastery Framework! We will be talking about that A LOT tonight! #ksedchat
I cant wait for you to share your experiences

A1) Increased Ss engagement, flexible seating, and student driven inquiry in my classroom. Will begin experimenting more with Kagan strategies in the music classroom especially in regards to instrumental development. #ksedchat
Q2 : What is Personalized Learning aka Mastery Learning aka Competency-Based Learning (Does everything in Education have to have so many names & acronyms?) #ksedchat
A1:
I have found that any connection I can make to my students culture - takes our relationship & learning SO much farther! For example, I am CONSTANTLY creating parodies to current pop songs for students to learn about math, reading, science & social studies concepts! #ksedchat
Q2 : What is Personalized Learning aka Mastery Learning aka Competency-Based Learning (Does everything in Education have to have so many names & acronyms?) #ksedchat
A2: It's giving your students ownership of their learning. Guiding them and allowing them to show what they know in the way that they are able to do it best. #ksedchat
Sorry I'm late! A1- this year I really wanted to focus on relationship building at the BOY. I used Kagan strategies i learned in a previous district, ideas from some awesome people i met at conferences this summer and things from our new reading curriculum. #ksedchat
A2: Lots of different names and definitions. I think of it as a different mindset, using all of the tools at our disposal (not just technology) to meet every child where he/she is. #ksedchat
A2: Students being able to take the time they need to learn the skills; Ss making choice in how they demonstrate knowledge; Ss knowing the skills are most important, even above & beyond grade 😯#ksedchat

A2: I think they’re all different. To me, personalized learning is geared toward the individual student. Mastery Learning and CBL are similar, as they can be evidenced through PL. #ksedchat
Q2 : What is Personalized Learning aka Mastery Learning aka Competency-Based Learning (Does everything in Education have to have so many names & acronyms?) #ksedchat
A2: Mastery learning ensures that students learn the content and don't just "move on" because someone else in the classroom learned it. #sbg is one tool that can be used to help Ss know where they are at, and what they still need to work on. #ksedchat
A2 getting kids to realize their potential and putting fourth their best efforts. Providing quality feedback so they can improve. Getting them to strive for the next rung on the ladder. #ksedchat
A2: It's giving your students ownership of their learning. Guiding them and allowing them to show what they know in the way that they are able to do it best. #ksedchat
A2: Empowering students to learn. Instead of providing them with questions that always have right or wrong answers, it is about having them drive some of their instruction and explore the learning! #ksedchat
A2: I see a big component of personalized learning at the upper grades as getting the learning centered around how students will transition into careers, life long learners and active citizens. #ksedchat
A2:
I believe first and foremost, personalized learning is reliant on S & T's relationships. If I have no connection with "John", I am not going to know what seating, style, approach works best FOR him. Knowing our students is ESSENTIAL!
#ksedchat

Sorry I’m late. Glad to see so many great faces. Beth here! A2: Personalized learning is students identifying skills and resources needed to take their education to the next level. #ksedchat

A2: Enabling students to master skills at their own pace! One of the many ways a technology/Engineering classroom can be effectively ran is using this method! #ksedchat
A2: I think personalized learning starts with whole group instruction on fundamentals and then students apply their learning on a personalized learning. It constructs leaning then #ksedchat

#ksedchat
A2- I think Personalized Learning is the ultimate meeting the child where they are at. This doesn't mean within the grade level, it means wherever they are. #ksedchat
A2: This also helps reinforce the idea of Bloom’s Taxonomy. This method helps students achieve those higher level of learning and thinking skills. #ksedchat
#ksedchat A2: Meeting students where they are at and giving the students the tools and the encouragement to reach where they can be. By meeting the students where they are at, it is a step towards breaking the cycle of work avoidance and learned helplessness.
A2: I think the thing I’ve learned most about personalized learning is that as kids grow, they need to know that they aren’t locked into a certain path. Dreams change, and that’s okay. You can have options. #ksedchat

Q2: personalized learning is actually trying to move forward in your position. Learning to BE BETTER. Not filling out a paper to complete a task. #ksedchat
By that point, ideally, students are in the driver's seat for their own learning, with it tailored more specifically to their needs and their futures. #ksedchat

A3: It can be a little overwhelming to think about when I have 130 students. But we must remember that small changes can make a huge difference in some kids. #ksedchat
Umm Management!!! It sounds AWESOME - but managing a class of 30 while getting each students exactly what they need at all times sounds like it takes a magical spell. #ksedchat
TIME!! Trying to work in Personalized Learning into a traditional school day is a puzzle. That is why I am so excited for @KSDEredesign and seeing how those Mercury and Gemini schools find a way to make it work. #ksedchat
A1: I'm playing with flexible seating. I'm also on my 2nd year of a gamified class. My students are in an epic battle with my evil twin, Dr. Vonn Stock. I also read Book Love and 180Days this summer and I'm changing up my whole ELA class. #ksedchat
A3 imo the biggest challenge is managing the learning of 100+ kids. Deciding who needs what etc. So many things that impact ss leaning happen outside the 50 minutes that I have ss #ksedchat

A3: I have seen the range of of kids in my classroom increase over the years. The challenge is how to make it work when have from 1st grade level to high school all in the same class. #ksedchat
A3: The initial prep and planning is daunting. Training Ss to be accountable and an intrinsic drive in them. Grades complicate things, since Ss and parents are trained to see them as the goal. #ksedchat
A1: As a school we are also rolling out start-up/wrap-up sessions instead of homeroom to bookend the students' day with awesomeness (SEL). We are also rolling out some Explo Days where students can explore new things they might be interested in. #ksedchat
A3: Not every program is of great quality! This falls on the resources provided and how the institution approaches this method. Another item to note, not every student is comfortable learning in this setting. This is where differentiated instruction is key! #ksedchat
A3 I feel that communication to our patrons is the greatest challenge. Most parents have only known about homework and grades from the traditional methods so changing to #masterychat#sbg will be challenging #KSedchat

A3: A challenge for me is the ongoing integration of so many things which are great value but still matching content of history, geography econ and govt. These have worth too but don't neatly match all facets of personalized learning. #ksedchat
A3: As someonewho is trying personalized learning for the first time, I am struggling with what kind of/how much support to give my students as they find their own paths to learning. But I know this year will be filled with trial and error...and lots of feedback! #ksedchat

A3: Too many hands in the pot!! Head Start, the district, the building. I don't even know what's mandated and what's "suggested." Feeling overwhelmed and kids start day after tomorrow and we're still having meetings and don't have everything we need! #ksedchat

As a T, it takes works & effort on my part. It takes extra planning at times. You can work smarter, not harder, but that doesn't equal easy! Especially if you have many students, with multiple needs! Sometimes it's not as simple as 'one and done' with the approach! #ksedchat
A3) School systerms can be too performance based, rather than progress based. In my field, performance as a group can sometimes be seen as more important than individual growth. Macro viewed, the micro development of Ss truly leads to superior group performance. #ksedchat
I'm not totally in either but there are concepts that you are probably doing. Feedback early and often on assessment. Getting kids to understand that meeting the standard might look like a "B" and to get an"A" they need to step it up! LoL #ksedchat
#ksedchat A3: Taking all of the information that is available for each student and finding the time to create the path that the student will take. Also finding materials that are ability appropriate and age appropriate (eighth graders working at lower grade levels).
That question is so intriguing to me, especially working with adults more closely now. Because what I believe to be what’s best for kids might not be what Teacher-A or Teacher-B. 🤔 #ksedchat
A3: trying to use Pinks theory of motivation to create purpose which leads to autonomy and then to mastery. However if the students don’t see the purpose of the content it makes it more difficult on the teacher #Ksedchat
A3: I’m a brand new teacher.... going into this with only my college experiences, but in a new area, in a completely different community than I’m used to. I feel that’s my biggest challenge at the moment. #ksedchat
The Grid Method : A Mastery Framework that has CHANGED the game in my classroom on managing the 100's of students needs in the classroom #GameChanger#ksedchat
A4: Trial and error. Just like with any type of obstacle. You start to figure out what works and what doesn’t work. It’s also a good idea to seek student feedback on possible solutions. #ksedchat
A4: We have to work with what we have - our passion, desire, and opportunity to reach the world, one student at a time! I'm always rediscovering, one thing at a time, I can get ahead of myself trying to make too many changes at once. #ksedchat
A4
If 20 of your ss are below, 60 are on track and 20 are excelling. What does your instruction look like for each group?
How are you going to bring up the 20 while providing opportunities to excel 4 others? #ksedchat
A4: “Fear of Failure” We have to model failing. If students never experience failure, how will the persevere? Goal setting, feedback, and reflection must be incorporated. If the teacher is involved they can help steer students back on course. #ksedchat
Q4: I think the biggest solution to my “pitfall” is to always be open to new ideas, as well as to constructive criticism. I can’t grow (and model the process of growth to my Ss) if I’m not willing to go through the process myself. #ksedchat
A4: I don’t mind the challenges, it takes time and getting used to balancing my time better. It’s what best for kids so I need to stay solution focused. If you live in the problem, you get more problems... live in the solution , get solutions. My team is great help2 #ksedchat

#ksedchat A4: Figure out what is working and use that as a framework to expand what is being offered in the class. Create choice boards to help organize the content being covered. Challenge students to find extension or enrichment activities that interest them.
A4: Set consistent and CLEAR standards of subject mastery. This will help guide the students to what it is they truly need to know! Just as most who teach PBL set clear rubrics for projects, so the student understands what they need to the achieve. #ksedchat
A4: I think many Ts need to see an example of it working ssuccessfully. Many are questioning the unknowns and it's hard to calm those gears without examples. #ksedchat

The Grid Method is a framework that allows teachers to dump in their own content and curriculum and make it mangable for students using DOK to scaffold information. THEN, it also includes how to manage it day to day in the classroom. #ksedchat#Teachbetterhttps://t.co/FhScdHgRRo

True! We may have a Mastery Framework Solution, but it takes your GUTS to make the shift happen! Take the plunge even if you just dip your toe in the water by asking a question! #ksedchathttps://t.co/xqclAOecLi
Q5 : How does this blend with your other Educational Goals? How can we continue to implement all of these best practice techniques to make your classroom student focused & awesome? #Ksedchat
It only takes two minutes to get families connected to Seesaw. Join us Tuesday for a live demo of how to invite families to Seesaw, and walk away with a plan in place! https://t.co/CfnVccdYQM#ksedchat#seesawchat
A4) I try really hard to work at the margins of modern educational practice, balancing theoretical design with realistic concerns. For me, a missing global culture is a real hurdle. I talk to coworkers as much as students about their vision, goals, and plans. #ksedchat
Personalized Learning is the solution to my PD goal. I’m focused on 6th grade SS this year. My goal is the help students make connections to Ancient Civilizations! #ksedchat
Q5 : How does this blend with your other Educational Goals? How can we continue to implement all of these best practice techniques to make your classroom student focused & awesome? #Ksedchat
A4: We are beginning to loop (as much as possible) with our underclassmen- 9 and 10th graders. I’m excited to have a solid understanding of my students coming into the classroom which will help me with some of my pitfalls: time. #Ksedchat
A5- I think giving the kiddos control builds more relationships and just improves the teacher's ability to lead the class. If you know where they are and they know where they are heading, all is right in the world. #Ksedchat
A5: Relationships have to be central. Releasing the work to the Ss leaves an opening for the teacher to come alongside individual Ss as they need. I'm excited to not be tied to delivering lesson while the Ss are in my room! #ksedchat

Good night everyone...Loved learning new ideas from all of you this evening. Continued success to all of you and special thanks to @RaeHughart for leading us into such a wonderful space for us to share. Let's keep shooting for the moon! #ksedchat
#ksedchat A5: The most challenging and most important educational goal I have for my students is getting them to gain confidence in their abilities. Once the student feels like they are achieving, they are more willing to try and create more challenging tasks.
A5:
My goal as a 2nd year T is to continue to dive into school leadership without fear. Currently helping brainstorm ideas for school to home connection/P involvement to build relationships BEYOND our 4 walls & to break barriers to improve instruction/increase learning!
#ksedchat
I loved teaching Ancient Civ. So many fun novels. My students wrote puppet play, skits, tablues, and did art in the style- cave paintings, frescos, watercolor, Greek masks. #ksedchat
