Welcome to tonight’s #ProDriven chat. I am excited to moderate tonight's chat on getting #personalizedPD to take flight in your district. Tonight's travels will use the Q1/A1 format. Let's get started!
Q1: Introduce yourself and your departure location.
We are going to travel through getting your journey to take flight! We will start with booking your flight with a travel agent.
Q2: How can you sell the idea of a #ProDriven journey to the stakeholders in your district?
We are going to travel through getting your journey to take flight! We will start with booking your flight with a travel agent.
Q2: How can you sell the idea of a #ProDriven journey to the stakeholders in your district?
A2: One selling point I make is the Sharing Phase. When you have educators in your district sharing their great journeys OUTSIDE your district, that is just good PR for your district. #ProDriven
A2: I’m not interested in “selling” but I would certainly start with the personal and professional benefits. For those that aren’t interested in “buying”, I would love to hear their reasons why and see if their needs could be met. #ProDriven
yes, it is just part of the cycle of personalized pd. They pick the topic from a list of many and can work in groups or on their own to research, integrate, action research, reflect and share at our edcamp in May #ProDriven
A2: Another selling point is…if you have educators that wish to seek further learning, but have sound reasoning based on positive effects on learner outcomes, it makes it easier to justify spending PD to send educators to conferences. Buying vs. Shopping. #ProDriven
Q3: Packing for a trip is so important and deciding which luggage you should take. What pieces of luggage "platforms" do we need to have to make sure the #ProDriven journey goes well?
A2)Offer the opportunity of choice and time, allowing staff to explore areas of interest. Gather feedback for coaches and guides to provide personalized PD for staff. Rinse and repeat. #voiceandchoice#ProDriven
A2--I love this question. I wonder what stakeholders would do if they knew about what Ts wish they had the time + resources to do in their classrooms. Get Ts to share their would-be goals + aims. Stakeholders need to hear what's possible #ProDriven
A3: the learning about what is out there - too many times I hear "I don't know, what I don't know" - a lot of educators don't even know what to ask for #ProDriven
A3: I’ve seen schools use a variety of platforms. Any LMS could do, or I also like building a quick website. But you have to have some kind of “central hub” to house all #PersonalizedPD for the educators w/in the district. #ProDriven
Q3: Packing for a trip is so important and deciding which luggage you should take. What pieces of luggage "platforms" do we need to have to make sure the #ProDriven journey goes well?
A2: Share, share, and share!! I've been honored to be a contributing author in #StoriesInEdu and blessed to be chosen to present at breakout sessions at two different trauma-informed conferences: Bridging to Resilience and Moving the Needle. #prodriven
I agree - teachers need time and support to research the things they need in their classroom. #ProDriven is a great structure that allows for all of it to happen.
A3: We use Canvas, our LMS system, to house everything. It is essential to have some organizational platform, especially with having over 150 teachers working on their own journeys. #ProDriven
A2: when it comes to art, it’s getting them to make time and come into our classrooms to see the magic that’s happening. A final artwork doesn’t speak to the volumes of learning that occurs on the path to get there #ProDriven
Sharing our journeys is important! That’s why I also encourage educators who complete a journey to share it here -> https://www.professionallydriven. com/pd-journeys There are a few in the chat RIGHT NOW! #ProDriven
A3: I like a light blog (I know a guy 😉), maybe a heavier book like @JayBilly2’s Lead With Culture, and a slew of edu hashtags, just to be safe. #ProDriven
Q4: Know what you can pack in your carry-on and checked baggage before arriving at the airport and going through security. What are some things you need to get rid of before going on a #ProDriven journey?
A3-- Using google classroom to house T goals and steps -- it's not fancy, but it's also a familiar platform for Ts. Updates make it user friendly for admin and Ts. Takes out a hurdle for learning a new system #ProDriven
Q4: Know what you can pack in your carry-on and checked baggage before arriving at the airport and going through security. What are some things you need to get rid of before going on a #ProDriven journey?
A4: I feel like you have to clean house and let go of so many possibilities. Choose something you are passionate about that will improve student learning and put your energy into it. #ProDriven
Q4: Know what you can pack in your carry-on and checked baggage before arriving at the airport and going through security. What are some things you need to get rid of before going on a #ProDriven journey?
A3)We utilize Canvas for our personalized learning journey-"Climbing the Mountain" in addition to other courses, book studies, and as a library for mini 5 min. PD "sparks." We have the support of in-house guides, coaches and models, plus offering outside learning. #ProDriven
A4: I think admin needs to get rid of the idea that everyone needs the same learning. Make it personal and something that is going to impact learning! #ProDriven
Having lots of reading/listening/etc. handy to input ideas. But I’d rather KNOW what it is I’m seeking first…then SEEK. That’s the difference between Amazon and the mall. #ProDriven
baby steps for sure...that's what has worked for me - start small, get pretty good with it, and then starts to open the door to other possibilities (the creativity kicks in) #ProDriven
A4) People need to live with the fail forward mentality and rid themselves of insecurities, fixed mindsets, and fallacies. Growth is not a sign of current weakness. #ProDriven
We have passed security and are ready to meet the flight crew.
A5: Who are the crew members that are essential in making this flight happen? Who becomes the gate attendants, pilots, the ground crew, and the flight attendants in the #ProDriven journey?
A4: I think you have to be willing to leave behind some of your “valuables” in order to best meet the needs for your students. They may treasure to you... but maybe it’s time to let go. #ProDriven
Q4: Know what you can pack in your carry-on and checked baggage before arriving at the airport and going through security. What are some things you need to get rid of before going on a #ProDriven journey?
Oops...Q5. Who are the crew members that are essential in making this flight happen? Who becomes the gate attendants, pilots, the ground crew, and the flight attendants in the #ProDriven journey?
LOVE THIS! A current weakness is just Point A. Point B is “positive effects on learner outcomes.” Now how do connect the two? -> https://t.co/PI8EBffXAe#ProDriven
We have passed security and are ready to meet the flight crew.
A5: Who are the crew members that are essential in making this flight happen? Who becomes the gate attendants, pilots, the ground crew, and the flight attendants in the #ProDriven journey?
A4--Need admin to be in the air traffic control position. Ts need to feel protected to take risks, fail, start over, and try again. If one path doesn't work, they to know it's okay to start over, try a new path--no crash landings w/ competent ATC #ProDriven
A5: I hope EVERYONE has a role. No one can be passive learners. Anyone could essentially play any of those roles, but it really does have to be admin who says, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re ready for take-off.” #ProDriven
We have passed security and are ready to meet the flight crew.
A5: Who are the crew members that are essential in making this flight happen? Who becomes the gate attendants, pilots, the ground crew, and the flight attendants in the #ProDriven journey?
A5: IMO, the ground crew is the admin and tech department to make sure everything is done well in the background. Instructional Coaches are the flight attendants and pilots are the teachers. #ProDriven
A5:the crew is made up of you and the Ss!Find out who has what strengths and hire them for the appropriate positions. I feel that the teacher is the plane itself, houses everyone and everythingbut allows the team to take flight, always there supporting and guiding #ProDriven
A5: I would like to be the flight attendant as the instructional coach. I think PLCs are the ground crew, when a PLC can take learning and integrate it together. #ProDriven
We have passed security and are ready to meet the flight crew.
A5: Who are the crew members that are essential in making this flight happen? Who becomes the gate attendants, pilots, the ground crew, and the flight attendants in the #ProDriven journey?
I have discovered that it does take a current culture that has established trust among the adult learners AND one that promotes failing forward for the #ProDriven model to really take flight. Otherwise, the plane will taxi, but wheels won’t get off the ground. #ProDriven

A5)The learner is the pilot, with help several other people taking on various roles to help them take off and land successfully. Remember the pilot is in charge of the growth but the reward of the new destination is about the passengers (students). #ProDriven
Ready to board the plane now? Prior to takeoff, gate attendants will announce the boarding time.
Q6: What are some ways to announce a district wide #ProDriven journey to the passengers?
If you’re enjoying tonight’s chat, we are looking for guest moderators for this coming month (or even later dates). We’d love to have you lead a #ProDriven chat :) Just talk with me, @MegFrideres, or @MrsStephenson3 if you’re interested. #ProDriven
Amen to this. Too often people proclaim the importance and necessity of trust and failing forward but their actions are not congruent with their words. #ProDriven

A6: When I’ve been involved with the district, we do a Teaser, then later a Reveal that includes showing off the central hub, and then later an official kick-off that includes a convo about strengths and weaknesses. #ProDriven

Q6: What are some ways to announce a district wide #ProDriven journey to the passengers?
Finally...we are ready for take off!
The crew has finished all the pre-flight preparations, the cabin door is closed, and the passengers have settled into their seats.
Q7: What are some things you need to do to make sure take-off goes smoothly? #ProDriven
A6: I’d ask the students for ideas! I see the passengers as being the admin and head honchos so what would the crew want to do to make the flight enjoyable fun and memorable #ProDriven
A6 -- If this were my school (and oh man, I hope it is one day), I'd want to start with brainstorming. Where do you want to go? What do you want to learn more about? Where do you see your practice go from where it is now? What will you need? #ProDriven

Q6: What are some ways to announce a district wide #ProDriven journey to the passengers?
Which brings me back to “selling” and “buying”. I’m going to invest my time in learning where I feel like my roi will be benefitial - this includes success and failures. #ProDriven

Q6: What are some ways to announce a district wide #ProDriven journey to the passengers?
Teaser = is all about why #personalizedPD provides more that traditional PD. Like a movie trailer. Reveal = Reveal the central hub and what the phases look like. Kick-Off= Reviewing model, discuss the equation below, and go thru the strengths & weaknesses convo. #ProDriven
A7: it helps to have a confident/experienced pilot at the helm. This means that I may have to tap people on the shoulder and ask them to fly a bunch of us to a wonderful destination! #ProDriven
A7: I would also make sure the proper lines of comm. between coaches, admin, and teachers are established. Any miscommunication, or if people do know who to go to with questions, then people get frustrated. When people get frustrated, then want to go back to before. #ProDriven

Q7: What are some things you need to do to make sure take-off goes smoothly? #ProDriven
During the flight, flight attendants must conduct regular safety checks and listen for unusual noises.
Q8: What are some things you need to look for to make sure to avoid turbulence during the #ProDriven journey?
I have helped a couple schools kick-off year two with the strengths and weaknesses convo since we didn’t do that last year. It really does help some “Zoo Tigers” step out of their cages -> https://t.co/xGrAF2o9Uj#ProDriven
A7: Ensure everyone understands the purpose--why PDPD is the best fit.
Plan designated spaces for learning.
Be consistent with how, when, and where.
Mean what you say--keep the time sacred.
#ProDriven

Q7: What are some things you need to do to make sure take-off goes smoothly? #ProDriven
A8: As people are working through their journey, I think we need to also pay attention to when the engine seems to die and people aren't moving forward. Coaching conversations seem to work well for this! #ProDriven

A7)Having a plan to successfully arrive at your destination, while also knowing the safety measures in place for when obstacles arise. Knowing that sometimes we have to be flexible as our path may need to be rerouted around from turbulence. #ProDriven
A8: as educators I think we are constantly proactively keeping our eyes peeled for potential pit falls, so to think one step ahead, have a back up plan or be willing to change course mid flight. #ProDriven
A8:
Is there designated time for reflection?
Are coaches making time to follow-up with teachers one-on-one?
We gave Jarod's survey when we started, so people knew what targets we're trying to hit. We'll ask for feedback again in January and in May, then respond.

Q8: What are some things you need to look for to make sure to avoid turbulence during the #ProDriven journey?
Q8: If some school districts are experiencing turbulence, I have created the IMPLEMENTATION ASSESSMENT SURVEY that can help any school evaluate their journey. Found on my FREE printable resources page -> https://t.co/YtjcbFeCWk#ProDriven
Being from Iowa, we are no strangers to flights getting rerouted, delayed or cancelled because of weather.
Q9: What happens if your #ProDriven journey takes you in a different direction than your original destination?
A8: Those who will facilitate need to clearly understand the process in order to successfully guide others. I highly encourage instructional coaches to go through the process so they understand the ins and outs. #ProDriven

I couldn't agree more with this Meg. I think it gives a clearer picture and allows all of the teachers to see coaches and admin in the trenches with them too when they go on their own journey. #ProDriven
Q9: I’ve seen this happen many times. Just recognize it’s part of the process. On our learning journeys, we need to emphasize PROCESS over final product. #ProDriven

Q9: What happens if your #ProDriven journey takes you in a different direction than your original destination?
A9: I think we need to embrace the change in the journey as long as we are still meeting the overall objectives of impacting student learning. It is part of the process! #ProDriven

Q9: What happens if your #ProDriven journey takes you in a different direction than your original destination?
A4: Get rid of...
...worrying about one or two people who may not buy in. They weren't buying in to trad. PD anyway.
...thinking everyone has to learn the same thing, in the same way.
#ProDriven
Q4: Know what you can pack in your carry-on and checked baggage before arriving at the airport and going through security. What are some things you need to get rid of before going on a #ProDriven journey?
Ready to land this plane...Remember once you arrive at your destination, your #ProDriven journey is not complete.
Q10: How do we encourage our passengers to share their experiences with others?
A10: Encourage them to share in non-traditional ways. Many are intimidated or scared to present at large conferences. Blogging and video reflections have been popular amongst our teachers #ProDriven
A9: ...you absolutely ROLL with it. Instead of asking, “Ugh, why this?!” Ask yourself: “Hmm, interesting. I wonder where this will take me instead?” #ProDriven

Q9: What happens if your #ProDriven journey takes you in a different direction than your original destination?
A10: Present at a conference, lead a discussion at an EdCamp, blog and share via social media, create a video and share via social media…or heck…write a book ;) #ProDriven
A9: People keep refining their problems of practice; or they follow the call when they arrive at the fork in the road; and they re-consider what they are learning in the context of their current students. Priorities and needs change, and so does the learning.
