My name is Annie and I'm a technology Integration coach with Valpo Schools in da region! Not only am I this excited for the school year, Leslie Knope is my spirit animal. #INeLearn
First #INeLearn Twitter chat! 3rd grade teacher in Perry Township Schools! I may be crazy but I'm excited to see my kiddos and my teacher friends again!

Hi, everyone! I'm Grace. I work at Willowcreek MS, and I am LOSING MY MIND with boredom this summer. I for real can't wait for school to start. #INeLearn
Q1: Let’s get a sense of our group’s technical background tonight - we hope to get a wide range here! How would you rate your computer science (CS) or programming skills? #inelearn
R1: I consider myself pretty tech savvy generally, but coding is definitely not something I know much about. I have used and loved Scratch, though! #INeLearn

I've always entertained the idea of having kids try to create a short animation or video game script (I'm an ELA teacher), but just never felt like I had the time. Maybe this year! #INeLearn
I love that you brought up HTML-I forget of that as coding. I remember in student teaching that we had to learn that as it was the only way to develop websites/blogs! #INeLearn dating myself
R1: I've done hour of code for many years and have always encouraged my Ss to express their thinking with Scratch. However, I need to be more proficient myself! #INeLearn
Q2: There are many great computer scientists, from Ada Lovelace to Bill Gates. What do you wish you know more about in CS? Is there a programming language you want to learn? Is there something you wish you could be able to do? #INeLearn

R2: find ways to engage students in CS early in their school careers AND to support teachers in bringing in CS without feeling like its one more thing #inelearn
R2: I want to learn a lot more about both iOS and Android app development. There are so many ways we can use apps to positively impact the people around us. #INeLearn
Q3: IN just passed a bill that would ensure every school in the state offers computer science and would fund professional learning for teachers. What programs does your school currently offer in teaching students CS? #INeLearnhttps://t.co/XnxgVcKskX
We are developing a program and curriculum currently. We are already 1:1 and have dabbled in hour of code. We need to do more digital citizenship. #INeLearn

R2: We are FINALLY offering beginning coding classes this year! We have been doing some @hourofcode activities in the past, but nothing as permanent as these classes for our freshmen. #inelearn

Q4: Changes in teaching always means there are some new opportunities to explore. Since all IN schools will be expected to offer CS courses by 2021, what do you see as some exciting opportunities for your students to learn more about CS? #INeLearn
Thanks for sharing this, Michelle! Yes, above all else, coding does not always have to be behind the computer. There are ways to teach coding by integrating logic and systematic thinking. Great for the younger Ss. #inelearn

R3: We use the PLTW curriculum, so all students are exposed to programming. Many of our schools have STEM and/or robotics clubs, so that is additional exposure to programming! #INeLearn

R4: We feel like we're walking in the dark with this task. Will there be any guidance on an approach provided by the IDOE besides the CS Standards? #INeLearn
A2: There are so many new things to learn in the CS world! I want my students to inspire what new things to learn about. I am used to Scratch like programs, but want to do more raw coding opportunities! #INeLearn
A3: Our school district is starting to gain more PLTW classrooms, but we also have tons of different types of robots and programming kits from our IT dept! I also love CSFirst for indoor recess! #INeLearn
Q5: Just with any change, though, there are also roadblocks that can present themselves. What are potential challenges in requiring schools to offer CS classes by 2021? Are there resources/training you’ll need to have as an educator to provide this? #INeLearn
Stepheny, according to an article, there should be. But the details are left vague for now (probably to adapt to school needs) https://t.co/XnxgVcKskX#inelearn
R4: We feel like we're walking in the dark with this task. Will there be any guidance on an approach provided by the IDOE besides the CS Standards? #INeLearn
A4: I am excited to incorporate more #digcit resources in my classroom so they are prepared to use all the new opportunities out there! #beawesomeIN#INeLearn
R4: Introducing our Ss to different programming languages helps them to become more fluent and flexible. Who knows what programming languages will be around in 2021? #inelearn
R5: most schools have the tech available. The problem is finding Ts that know coding to provide a foundation for the class. Training is necessary or, we let the kids dive in head first and learn with them. #INeLearn
A5: The hardest task will be to help educators feel comfortable. We held an Hour of Code and Beyond for Educators this past year. It was a lot of fun. We hope it grows. #INeLearn
A4: I am excited to incorporate more #digcit resources in my classroom so they are prepared to use all the new opportunities out there! #beawesomeIN#INeLearn
There are still schools who don’t have excellent infrastructure or device setups. Ts need more confidence w/ CS and help realizing that they don’t have to be perfect to teach it. It’s a process for Ss and Ts together and relationship can be built through its discovery! #INeLearn
R3- we are building a K-12 CS curriculum @WashCommSchools. Using @j_alano to build resources at K-6 to make CS foundational at that level @TheresaJHall and @PLTWorg guiding our secondary CS course options. It’s a work in process, but excited for our students! #INeLearn
R5: I see a roadblock being that teachers will see it as one more thing to fit in. A challenge will be building the confidence in teachers that they can teach it with a solid curriculum that is ready to implement and not have to be created by each school. #INeLearn
Q6: As you know, parents are the primary instructors of their children. What are ways that you or your school can include parents in encouraging their children to learn CS? #INeLearn
Would LOVE to start some family/community based coding events. Not just straight coding, but bringing in devices such as Sphero to make it come to life. #INeLearn
Very true! I think you hit a good point - I wonder if there has been any talks to discuss how IN will attract and recruit #compsci teachers. It’s difficult to get those who are fluent in CS to teach it in K12. #inelearn
A5: I feel like even though there are lots of free resources coming out there to help us and our Ss, we sometimes feel overwhelmed to learn something new! #INeLearn
Please forgive me #INeLearn family. I’m in an area with spotty service and mobile only. I may have to go back and lurk, but wanted to jump in on @mrg_3 last chat. 😭 This is a great stuff!
Q7: How can you incorporate CS into your class? If you’re a computer teacher, how can you encourage your students to use their CS skills in their other classes? #INeLearn
I knew tonight would be a great chat--I definitely stacked the cards in my favor with our guest moderator and his topic! Thanks for joining. I'm not going far in the virtual world! #INeLearn
Yes! I know personally the idea of learning to code was daunting but once learning it, it was a lot of fun! Giving Ts confidence is the key - and knowing that this is something all Ts, regardless of subject, can support. #INeLearn
A6: This is a goal of mine this year is to include and share more resources with my families. I know #BeInternetAwesome has teamed up with other orgs to provide ideas to share easily! #INeLearn
R6: On the last day of summer enrichment coding club, I invited parents of attending Ss in for a showcase of the projects the kids created & a brief explanation of CS. I pleasantly overwhelmed by the Ps who showed up! Ps were very supportive and want to know more. #INeLearn
That is a GREAT idea!!! and even have a night where they learn with their kids, too! Just using something from @codeorg or @GoogleForEdu gets both parents and Ss something fun to do. #inelearn
R6: We've done some fun stuff in the past that @ogranat mentioned. Looking towards the future, I think we can do even more! We also encourage parents to take advantage of CS resources in our community!! #inelearn
Would LOVE to start some family/community based coding events. Not just straight coding, but bringing in devices such as Sphero to make it come to life. #INeLearn
A7: Besides sharing CSFirst with my students during recess, I am going to find new ways to integrate more CS skills in my daily schedule, including using online resources for portfolio sharing! #inElearn
A7: MaKey MaKey with Scratch is my gateway combo tech of choice. Something about having kids (of all ages) create circuits is amazing. It can be adapted to just about any area. I know a university prof who uses this with his students. #INeLearn
Q8: What are some resources you’ve found helpful (or maybe you’ve heard of) in teaching CS to students? Are there any activities that you can share with others who wish to integrate CS in their classes? #INeLearn
Showing Ts how many careers will involve CS. Last summer I attended a STEAM camp for educators and it was eye opening! CS is not just video game designers! #inelearn
A6: Late to the #INeLearn party, but I am a fan of CS Unplugged: CS activities without a computer! Many come with printables that could be played at home... and what parent would say no to less screen time? https://t.co/ZlUNRDKE7d

An idea for a coding event. Kids bring their parents in to school and instruct them on how to code a (insert object here). Or how to break a code. Or.... #INeLearn
Our school district collaborated with our local public library to help start a CoderDojo. This fall two of our PLW teachers will be training library staff on MIT App Inventor. We keep trying to think out of the box. #INeLearn
R7 "Cross-curricular" column of reflections from our model lessons in CS Fundamentals PD shows how we would incorporate CS into K-5 curriculum https://t.co/E9guNUL099#CSforIN#INeLearn
This has been a great discussion! But like all things, this chat must come to an end. So here is our WU question: What is that one thing that you will do to help your school become CS ready? #INeLearn
Even better, partner with a local tech industry (Indy could use Allison, Roche, Lilly) and have them demonstrate how the codes the kids have learned is used in their industry. Go even further, have an FBI or State Police agency person do a code cracking session. #INeLearn
R7: My go to for integrating CS into the classroom is programming a cartoon or game to retell a story. Not all Ss would choose this as an option, but some would! #inelearn
Your tweet made me think about how CS can open the doors for Ss in a number of different interests and how they can combine CS with other fields. Thanks for sharing! #inelearn
So very true! And honestly, our Ss will need to have some basic knowledge to know how it works at least. They may not need to know how to code (although I think they will), they will at least need to understand how these languages work! #inelearn
WU: my physics class this year is going to do a lot of tech project based learning activities looking at mass transit in Indy. I want them to prototype a MT system. They will design, construct, and hopefully code to make their system go. #INeLearn

A8: For those looking for a Python coding activity, my team @MimirHQ supports an open source game called PaintBot where students program virtual bots and compete to cover as much of the playing field in their color as possible 🎨 #INeLearnhttps://t.co/7rezq22iwP
Q8: What are some resources you’ve found helpful (or maybe you’ve heard of) in teaching CS to students? Are there any activities that you can share with others who wish to integrate CS in their classes? #INeLearn
I just saw something like this with @GoogleForEdu recently where they have students code out telling a story of two animals on a boat in the ocean and they have to make the waves move. Such a great idea! #inelearn
R7: My go to for integrating CS into the classroom is programming a cartoon or game to retell a story. Not all Ss would choose this as an option, but some would! #inelearn
And for AP CS A Java teachers: an open source game where students program battleships in Java, go on missions, and battle each other: https://t.co/4N4HEeE0wi#INeLearn
No words can express our gratitude for @mrg_3 !! Her vision and dedication to growing this amazing @INeLearn community has been key to the amazing teaching and learning happening in Indiana and beyond. YOU will be missed Michelle. Thank you. #inelearn
