Hello #champforkids
Melissa, 7th Grade Science T from NY here. Super excited to be allowed into the ring to run the show tonight!
My new adventure this year is to change to more student centered, blended learning model in my classroom.
Good evening, Champs!!! Peter Boland, secondary ELA Teacher from Woonsocket, RI... trying to give kids more control with some blended learning... #champforkids
A0: This is Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. @SmartLab_tweets#STEM Facilitator. We redesigned our assessment tools, are attempting to increase relevance within activities, in addition to build connections between the Core classes and our Lab. #champforkids
Sorry to miss #champforkids this week with the greatness that is @MrsAsztalos but grad. class calls...
Huge shout out and congrats to @khoggardGRT for the book deal and just her general awesomeness!
Sorry to miss #champforkids this week with the greatness that is @MrsAsztalos but grad. class calls...
Huge shout out and congrats to @khoggardGRT for the book deal and just her general awesomeness!
Good evening everyone. Destiny Huggins 5th Sci and SS from Houston, TX. My first #champforkids chat tonight. My new adventure is trying gamification in my class.

Alex from St. Louis, MO - I am a 9-12 math & CS teacher, and Student Council Advisor. I’m teaching AP Computer Science Principles for the first time this year, using Harvard’s CS50 curriculum. I’m doing just as much learning as teaching, and loving it! #ChampForKids
Hi everyone. Scott from Michigan. I’m a middle school dean. My new adventure is this is my first year as an administrator, and it has already been a huge learning opportunity for me! Glad to be here tonight! #champforkids
Hi all! Kristen here from PA! I teach 6th grade physical science. I gave up my pride today and decided to use crutches instead of be a peg legged pirate. Let’s see if it helps me keep my cool a little better. #butsometimespirateslosetheirtempersandcuss#champforkids
Kaitlyn Ralston! I teach 2nd grade in Liberal, Ks... the new adventure for me as well as my school is we are going through Redesign this year so lots of new coming our way! #champforkids
Stacey Macoff 8th grade science teacher in virginia. My new adventure is teaching 8th grade haha. But pushing for more student voice and real world connections #champforkids
Noel, Secondary ELA Teacher from NC. New adventure? Lots of them this year-- personal and otherwise. Life is one big, fabulous adventure! I am teaching Macbeth for the first time this year--already having a lot of fun with it!! #champforkids
A1 #champforkids
I start the year talking about growth mindset and how our brain learns. We talk about life examples, and how learning is not always easy. I encourage mistakes by not grading practice and giving as much feedback as possible so they can grow.
A1: The routine and culture needs to move away from one and done and towards a progression of learning (beginner to master) for each skill... #champforkids
A1: Trying to build relevance in activities is helpful. When they can connect their engagements beyond the walls of the school, true connections are formed. We are also having Ss investigate their STEM Pioneers to "find themselves hidden w/in their stories". #champforkids
A1: We can be transparent about our own practice, risk taking and mistakes. The more they see us doing it as adults, the more comfortable they will be to put themselves out there. #champforkids
Mariah Way from KS! I teach 7th ELA and I am trying to get students to take more responsibility for grades, more independence overall, and putting standards in their hands for some things! #champforkids
A1 I try to link practice to sports or their extra curricular. Just as they have to attend and practice plays, or other skills to become better they have to do the same in class. I think making that connection that they do have a growth mindset in other areas helps. #champforkids
A1: I help Ss see that making mistakes is awesome because that means 1) you’re trying 2) you get another chance 3) best learning comes from trial and error #ChampForKids
A1. I remind them to ride the waves and trust the process. When they know the whole cycle has a purpose, they stay in the game and know that I’m right there with them the whole time. #champforkids
A1: This was the topic of my first blog post ever! Build relationships and show students that you make mistakes too. Work hard, but have fun. #champforkidshttps://t.co/zI1eM2ezF2
A1: In seeing the steps as they draft, improve, and redraft, they will see their initial shortcomings and experience the need to go after skills repeatedly... #champforkids
A1- I have growth mindset posters everywhere and often have students add the word yet to their frustrations. I dont know it "yet" I reinforce the idea of we practice the easy stuff now so the hard stuff isn't hard stuff later #champforkids
A1: With my Ss, I focus on helping them understand before being understood. They have to understand why something is wrong or why a mistake was made before they can move on. #champforkids
Hey everyone, Dennis here from RI checking in, how is everyone?? #champforkids My challenge is: facilitating two different tests in one day!!! (PSATs & NWEA) this is a first for our school.
A1. By practicing what you preach- taking risks & failing with my kiddos is essential #growthmindset
using mentor texts, modeling, giving time for kids to practice by teaching each other;) #champforkids
A1b: Growth mindset isn't something to simply talk about, it needs to become part of the actions of what we expect so our students value and own it. #champforkids
Be honest! Talk about your successes and “failures”. Focus on lessons learned and improvements made following reflection. In many situations I heard a “no” before I heard a “yes”. Be persistent and develop grit. #champforkids
A1 lead by example. I’m the first to tell my Ss when I make a mistake, and then I explain how I’m going to learn and grow from it. I tell my students it’s ok to make mistakes because it helps us grow as long as we learn from them #ChampForKids
A2 - Recognizing persistence and resilience in literature, historical figures, classmates, teachers, community leaders helps students to keep it at the forefront of their thinking! #champforkids
A1) Show them "Growth Mindset" quotes from either famous athletes, musicians or actors about how they were cut from a sports team/choir. It will help them make real life connections and teach perseverance #champforkids
A1: I’m not afraid to be real with them about my mistakes and I try and will try even harder to emphasize the importance of the journey rather than the end result. Many reflection questions at the end of an assignment are geared toward the journey. #champforkids
A1: provide opportunities where they may fail, where they have to take risks, and it back and watch. We made Rice Krispie treats last week with 2 rules: No pans in microwave and only pans on hot plate. They were hesitant and first, but took charge and figured it out!#champforkids
A1. Trying to explain to Ss the why we do things in learning, how we learn, why we need to practice, encouring Ss to take risks, watching T take risks, making mistaking, problem solving, and reledoing until success! #champforkids
A1~ model, model, model & provide ample opportunities to practice skill dev
~ ongoing, authentic, purposeful conversations and action steps to support these areas
#champforkids
A2 #champforkids
Biggest thing you can do is given them the chance to get back up. Provide multi measure and means to practice and learn. Make learning opportunities no/low risk,e especially at the beginning.
Don't let Ss settle for less than their best.
A1 Pencils were made with erasers.
White out can erase mistakes from an ink pen.
There are even pens that will erase stains on your clothes.
We were meant to make mistakes. Every mistake is a learning opportunity!
#champforkids
A1 Open conversation & Giving purpose for expectations and rules for every student. Does it take a bit longer? Yes but our students deserve to know why & practice it too. #champforkids
A2: We need to build value in the growth and in the work. We need to lessen the value of the single grade. Learning is growing and takes steps. #champforkids
A2: Cheer them on. Find their good and speak it over them. Who doesn't love to hear positives about their efforts? Kids are no different than adults. Let them know it's going to be OK, and that you appreciate their efforts. End with, "You got this!" #champforkids
A1 I would say as a teacher I model it. I show them how I’m going through the same process. Sometimes we take a risk as a class and my Ss started to branch out and try new things on their own. We also talk a lot about mistakes are just opportunities to learn more. #champforkids
A2: Talk to them about what they have learned from the setback and how they are going to apply that knowledge moving forward. Help them see the ways that the set back will actually spring them ahead. Then, give them an opportunity to show they have grown from it. #ChampForKids
A2: At this point I usually lend them a helping hand, be their hype girl, and try to give them new ideas or sparks to move on. Build their confidence back up or just get them talking about something they love to help reset. #champforkids
A1.Our students forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime #champforkids
A2: I had a “Power of Yet” bulletin board in my classroom, and I have an area of my office set up for this now. As well, I have powerful quotes from famous people who have experienced failure. I reference the wall when talking to my Ss about failures and mess ups. #champforkids
A2: First, I must model this expectation. When things don’t go our way, we can’t just give up. It’s all about perspective & helping Ss see obstacles as stepping stones rather than roadblocks. My Ss know that I’ll be there in whatever capacity they need me to be #ChampForKids
A2: I can model it for starters. I can also make sure I'm conferencing one on one with the student and not expecting a one size fits all policy will work. But let's get real.. If you have a good relationship with the student you are already light years ahead! #champforkids
A2: framing things positively to encourage instead of discourage! Things like "I like you how thought outside of the box. But let's focus a little bit more in this direction and see what you can come up with" #champforkids
Be honest! Talk about your successes and “failures”. Focus on lessons learned and improvements made following reflection. In many situations I heard a “no” before I heard a “yes”. Be persistent and develop grit. #champforkids
A2. Rapport building is absolutely key and at the core of almost anything we need to accomplish in education! If they know I’m there with them through thick and thin without judgement, they can cast out further with less hesitation of loss. #champforkids
A1) Show them "Growth Mindset" quotes from either famous athletes, musicians or actors about how they were cut from a sports team/choir. It will help them make real life connections and teach perseverance #champforkids
A2: We took the “No crying in science” pledge the second day of school. I also model mistakes quite often and I talk my way through my mistakes out loud so ss can hear how I do it. #champforkids
I was nervous at first because I wasn’t sure how they would respond, I have been pleasantly surprised. They actually ask me in the hallway if we’re sketchnoting in group! 😍 #ChampForKids
A2 share stories of successful people who failed but didn’t give up. Kids are always shocked to learn that Michael Jordan didn’t make the hs varsity basketball team!#champforkids
A2: Let them collaborate to have fresh eyes on the situation... another student may have faced a similar situation... maybe point out a couple of quick things they can work on (love Google for this reason)... #champforkids
A2) By having strong relationships it will go hand and hand with growth mindset. Give them time to be self reflective and allow them to make corrections, nobody is perfect. #champforkids
A2: Ensure students know your standards are high because you BELIEVE in them. Too often the conversation is only about what the student should change - Reflect on your own practices by asking students what YOU as the teacher can do differently to best support them. #champforkids
A1 Pencils were made with erasers.
White out can erase mistakes from an ink pen.
There are even pens that will erase stains on your clothes.
We were meant to make mistakes. Every mistake is a learning opportunity!
#champforkids
A3 - Incorpoating this into back to school open house conversations allows parents to see that you value growth mindset as much as your content! #champforkids
Had a situation like this on the way out of the building today. 5th Grader made bad choices, we talked about them, and focused on how to recover from the loss. Owning mistakes is key. #champforkids
A2: Be your Ss biggest cheerleader! Let them know that it’s ok not get something right the first time, and encourage them to keep trying. #champforkids
A3 #champforkids
I am still working on the best ways to do that at the MS level. I have a whole section in my course letter, will share it during my Curriculum Night, and provide resources on my Schoology site. I am still working to find new ways to share with Ps.
A2~
Foster relationships that are built on trust and ❤️& Ss will go to great lengths to listen to your suggestions, try them out w/out hesitation & extend such to their peers~ the positive vibes in a classroom can move mountains in areas of resilience& such 😊
#champforkids
A3: Parents only know grades. We need to help them to understand the value in measuring growth as a continuum. They have to intentionally experience it to understand the value. #champforkids
A2: For risk give a project with littledirection - see what they can figure out and do out of their own ingenuity... rubrics state floors, not ceilings... #champforkids
A3: For most of my meet the teacher talk, I focused on this. Tried to get s video together for before the school year started, but didn’t happen. Turned it into a model of a #passionproject to show my ss as a model. #champforkids
A2. By being that cheerleader for ALL my kiddos! Celebrating the failures just as much as the successes🎉 My family knows that each of them are soecial and important! We celebrate both! We all are learning! #lovemyfamily 💗 #champforkids
A2.Spend some time working 1:1 with them and explain and show them what went wrong and how we need to go through and problem solve.Different pathways they can try, shortcuts if nec.,give them the opportunity to try again!Redo the problems, think through, try, success. #champforkids
A3: If we help Ps see the importance of having a growth mindset, they too will encourage it. We want to work as a team to ensure Ss are successful and when Ts & Ps are working collaboratively- Ss win! #ChampForKids
A3- I start at back to school night by talking to the parents about growth mindset. what it is and how I encourage them to grow those brains and find the answer instead of just giving them the answers when they ask! #champforkids
A3: My parents get newsletters, texts, notes home, and we have a class Facebook page. I share articles and things that we're doing pertaining to this, and so much more, in class. #champforkids
A3: The easiest way of communicating the importance of a growth mindset is by teaching and coaching it in their children. The children begin to live it, talk it, and take it home. I've gotten lots of positive feedback thus far #champforkids
It's always key that you address the behavior and then me forward. Constantly reminding them if the bad choice isn't going to get you anywhere. #champforkids
A3: We promote growth mindset in all of our classrooms. During our open houses and parent nights, we discuss what this means and looks like in the school. We promote it to parents as a way to think about the school community and promote it to their Ss. #champforkids
A3 I tell my students learning is a process and a journey. Every struggle is apart of the journey and this is how I explain to parents as well. #champforkids
A3. Communicate that expectations are high because we truly believe in their child- not seeking to take them down. If the goals are clear, they can see the bigger picture with us and ease their worries. #champforkids
A3 Our parents have their "mind set" on how they were taught in school.
We must shift their "mindset" to new innovative practices.
Parents need to understand how what we are doing in the classroom supports how their child learns at school!
#champforkids
Hey #champforkids fam, this week we are excited to support @MissKaty11 and her school community! If you can send any of these items I know first hand they would appreciate it!
A3: Focus on the effort. Talk to them about it from the very beginning. It's hard for parents to break the cycle of grades, grades, grades, but they're smart. Help them understand. #champforkids
A3: Celebrate it with the parent when you see it happening via notes or phone calls. Share success stories. Get the parents talking about reasons why they’re proud of their child. Get parents to share their own experiences for Ss to see! #champforkids
A3: @MrsAsztalos and I are writing a book on this concept especially for parents. It will be a short, but essential book for parents of middle school students. #champforkids
A2: we have a social contract and on it my students chose to put “never give up” because “with the help of each other we can reach our goals” they have really taken charge with this and encourage each other to be persistent. They also know I’m cheering them on! #champforkids
Right. It just makes them feel bad about themselves. Many kids beat themselves up so badly over things that it definitely makes it worse to harp on it. #ChampForKids
A3 I always do my best to have ss go home and share with their parents what we did in #PhysEd. I encourage my Ss to challenge their parents to do the exercises and skills we learn. This puts the students in charge and hopefully gets the parents on board too #ChampForKids
I tell students that the fastest way to gain my respect is by owning up to your mistakes. Extreme ownership - "you must own everything in your world, there is no one else to blame. - @jockowillink" #champforkids
A2: How many inventors got it right the first time? How many great works of art took years to make? J.K. Rowling - seven years getting the first Harry Potter novel off the ground. Rome wasn’t built in a day...#champforkids
A4 - Surrounding myself with people who motivate me to keep going when things get tough! Self doubt and that fixed mindset can sneak up on us all! So thankful for @CristinaDajero@MrPStrunk@_on11 have all been my go to motivators! ❤️ #champforkids
A3 Communicating Growth Mindset is more challenging because we don’t get much time to revisit the convo. I would share the Class Dojo movies via our Class Dojo to give them resources to view #champforkids
Totally agree. The most essential things we teach are not on a test. Self-confidence, kindness, empathy and caring about others matter just as much, if not more!
#champforkids
A4 #champforkids
When I here that little negative voice, I try and just start adding the word "yet" onto my statements. If you recognize it, you can more easily combat it.
I also have a great teammate who gets me out of my funk.
A4: Seek advice from those who keep me grounding. Take a slice of humble pie - typically it's either fear or pride keeping us from a growth mindset anyhow. #champforkids
A4: Growth Mindset cannot simply be a song playing in the background. It has to be an intentional part of teaching and learning in a manner of routine that keeps it alive. #champforkids
A2: How many inventors got it right the first time? How many great works of art took years to make? J.K. Rowling - seven years getting the first Harry Potter novel off the ground. Rome wasn’t built in a day...#champforkids
A3: When you conference with parents discuss the growth possible instead of the negatives. Adults have to be educated here as well---we were all trained to focus on getting the highest, best grade. #ChampForKids
A3: Put it right in the syllabus, even better, school should put it in materials sent home over the summer, on the website, talk about at parent-teacher conferences... #champforkids
A3 pushing information and access that helps identify/fill the gaps that may be present at home by being specific about what academically layered homes have and helping them get there. Specifically, with resources to help pull the curtain back. #champforkids
A4-make a list of good things for the day. Some days it seems like the only thing is a drank my coffee before it got cold but once I sit down and reflect without focusing on the negative I discover there is so much more #champforkids
A3. Parents are so concerned about grades and scores, but never think to look at the increase or decrease in growth rates of learniing. For a child entering in school as a new Ss, you can see progress in skills, development, socialization, collaboration, and work! #champforkids
A4: Just keep chatting, just keep chatting. And surrounding myself with people who challenge me but also build me up at the same time. So lucky to have a bunch of those people in my life! #champforkids
A4: I think every year I grow in understanding that doing the best I can is all I can ask of myself. You will have ups and downs, but you have to find silver linings and remind yourself why you started! #champforkids
A4: When the going gets tough, I remember my WHY and look at their little faces. I'm kind of a big deal in their lives right now so I need to pull it together and persevere and give them my best. #champforkids
A3. From meet the teacher to Student Led Conferences- parents are a big part of our family! We all, parents, kids &!me are all involved & take an active role- which is why I have student led conferences thru @Flipgrid so they can explain the importance too;) #champforkids
A3 we have the convos in class and my Ss are the ones that start using the same phrases. Also at conferences I share some of the progress being made and how we focus on growth mindset. P see the difference so they usually are all for it! #champforkids
A4 There are going to be days that we feel like giving up!
Before you give up...think of your purpose!
It also doesn't hurt to think of those people who have doubted you along the way!
#champforkids
A4: Growth Mindset cannot simply be a song playing in the background. It has to be an intentional part of teaching and learning in a manner of routine that keeps it alive. #champforkids
A4️⃣~
~ practicing presence when the inevitable bumps in the road arise~ deal w/it accordingly and move on
~surround yourself with positive, authentic people and avoid those negative nellies who are full of doom & gloom
~laugh ALOT 😊
~extend yourself mercy
#champforkids
There are some days that I have to choose my attitude. I always choose positive. It is not the kids fault that my morning didn't go right, why should they pay the price? They fill me with energy and a passion for what I do. When my room is full, my ❤️ is happy! #champforkids
A4: Keep hobbies, and hopefully ones you aren’t necessarily “good” at - running, cooking, music, gardening, etc. There’s nothing better than taking a step back & seeing growth as a process. You don’t have to be “good” at something to love it! #champforkids
A4 I have these in my gym to help remind my Ss as well as me and my PE staff. Also surrounding myself with other amazing teachers in my school is a huge help! #champforkids
A4: I take a step back & remind myself that I am growing & learning every day. It never stops. Although I would love to be perfect, I am nowhere near it, but that is also the fun in life. I get to experience new things and still grow. Otherwise, how awfully boring! #champforkids
A5 #champforkids
Each student has their own learning journal to set goals and reflect every Friday. It is important to set time to do this in class, because it is not innate for them to be reflective on their own.
A5- As a GRT, I do a series of lessons with our K and 1st gr Ss to help them understand their brains, growth mindset, and the power of yet! If we can start them off as soon as they get to school we can create a new norm! #champforkids
A5: First thing Ss see when they come to the door of their media center is a sign that says, "Mistakes are proof that you're trying." I try to set the tone from the very first impression. #Champforkids
A5: I use learning progressions with my students that show what Beginning, Approaching, Proficient, Excelling look like. They self-check as we learn and grow. They self-assess and keep the mindset of YET. #champforkids
A3: Educating parents on what a growth mindset entails will help with this. Ps can encourage their students when they make mistakes because they will understand that sometimes failing is the first step of learning. #champforkids
Love, love, love you girl!!! Your morning posts are always the first thing I look for when I wake up in the mornings! Soooo thankful we are connected, my friend! #Champforkids
In reply to
@CristinaDajero, @khoggardGRT, @MrPStrunk, @_on11, @ChristineBemis2
A5: I tell Ss that I'm not perfect and that I make mistakes just like them. I write in front of students so they can see that it's hard and it's messy but that's where the learning comes from. I model that my stumbles are just part of getting better. #champforkids
A3: It's essential that we cast vision for Ps the same way that we do for our Ss. They are equal share stakeholders in the learning process. Communicate, communicate, communicate....reference A2 for details; modify pronouns. #champforkids
A5: We have a "Calm Spot" where students can go to self-regulate. We also use Zones of Regulation. I love that this practice is non-punitive! #champforkids
A5: The power of YET! My Ss will actually say “remember, don’t forget to add YET”. They know that just because you can’t right now it’s only temporary- we’ll work on that so you can get it #ChampForKids
A5 I Model and tell my students that I love them even when they mess up. They will remind me when I am frustrated or they are having a moment. #champforkids
A4: sometimes I get overwhelmed and those negative thoughts come in so I count the positives from the day and make a goal for the next day. I always have at least one area I am focused on and trying to work on. #champforkids
A5: We have periodic reflection activities where we look back at activities and think about ways to improve in a positive way. I allow my students to redo certain assignments as well. We talk about what lessons we are learning and how to grow from them. #ChampForKids
Can I get an Amen here?!?! So frustrating when the A game happens for the admin on observation day. If it's "too boring" for admin, it's too boring for the kids. They deserve our A game! #champforkids
A4: Smile, and enjoy the ride. Had a few weeks of going up the hill, now we are at the top and plunging down. Alas, it's only for a moment before we hit the curve and go back up the hill. #champforkids
Thank for so much #champforkids for joining us tonight.
Be sure to follow each other, grow you PLN and register for the free #FormativeSummit coming up soon! I will be talking about growth mindset!
https://t.co/CyF8WbqxsH
A5. My office is a crazy place(I tell my students it’s a model of what the inside of my brain looks like)with toys, puzzles, books, colors, global artifacts, etc.I try to inundate them with a broad visual experience in hopes that they will see the world the same way. #champforkids
A5: “Repeat Improvement Projects” - 11th & 12th graders do a draft of the Common App essay and a presentation based on it... correct! Learn new skills! Do it again in a couple of months... exposes growth... #champforkids
A5- I snap pics of Ss in the moment when they feel they've 'stretched' their brain-could be trying something new, persevering, trying different methods- we print these out and add them to our bulletin board-these pics are the most meaningful things on the walls #champforkids
A5 Reflecting helps me promote a growth mindset!
I understand the importance of improving every day!
Practice what you preach and share your sermon!
#champforkids
Jumping in late. A5 share failures, explain to ss that perfect isn’t real and promote the process over the product. Being transparent about how learning works makes it easier for ss to understand that “Rome wasn’t built in a day” yesterday helps build/shape today #champforkids
A5: Trying to encourage kids to live decompartmentalized in our Lab. Skills, concepts, abilities need to be remixed into what we get to do each day to create a beautiful product. #champforkids
A5- I snap pics of Ss in the moment when they feel they've 'stretched' their brain-could be trying something new, persevering, trying different methods- we print these out and add them to our bulletin board-these pics are the most meaningful things on the walls #champforkids
A5. Sometimes I use pictures to show Ss their learning from beginning, to mistakes, redos, problem solving, thinking through problem, redoing until success is obtained! Then we have big smiles! #champforkids
A5: My students are not allowed to say “I can’t” unless it is followed by the word YET! We listen to @CJLuckeyDope The Power of Yet and The Power of Mistakes every morning! #champforkids
I know! I am a fan of think time and honoring our introverts need for some quiet time to process, but we also need discussion, discourse, and collaboration to learn and grow #champforkids
I am still trying to figure it out. I invite kids to join me for lunch, study hall, afterschool. I also try to build in some class time to do redos, retakes and enrichment. #champforkids
A5: I try new things in front of them. They see the full process of growth. some of them have been attempting to teach me Spanish and see I am not successful right away. They now feel comfortable to try new things that we are learning in class. #champforkids
