The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Hello & welcome to #MichEd tonight for what I hope to be a great conversation about educator recruitment & retention in our state. Take a minute & introduce yourself, position & school!
Thanks so much for hosting a discussion on this critical topic. Troy Hicks, professor @CMUniversity teacher education, ed tech, and English. Looking forward to sharing ideas as long as I can be on tonight! #miched
Good evening everyone. Chris Wigent Executive Director of MASA (superintendents association). Looking forward to the chat this evening and taking information back to our Educator Shortage Workgroup. #miched
Thanks for this, my name is Dimitri Tolar-Key a student at Cornerstone university studying elementary education. Looking forward to this discussion tonight! #miched
Hello! I’m Brandon Smith, a student in the Masters of Education program at the University of Michigan, and a teaching intern at Chelsea High School! Thanks so much for putting this on! #michED
A1: Soon, if not already, we will have more classroom jobs than people willing to fill them. I don't think that we have a perception problem. I think we have a reality problem! #miched
A1: This is a complex question. Some comes from popular media, some from politicians, some from parents and students... but lots comes from educators, too. We need to show young people the intellectual, creative aspects of teaching. #miched

A1 - Recruitment is made difficult when we have groups of people that continually denigrate the profession. I'm not sure what their end game is, but it's not productive. #MichEd
A1) Teaching is the greatest profession around (in my humble opinion) :) Too many people telling stories for us rather than from teachers. We need to share more positive stories #MichEd
A1: We need to be sure to make teaching appealing from a variety of perspectives, not just financial and status-based ones. We need to demonstrate that teaching is intellectually and emotionally nourishing, as well as highly creative. #miched
A1) Teaching is the greatest profession around (in my humble opinion) :) Too many people telling stories for us rather than from teachers. We need to share more positive stories #MichEd
A1: Recruitment has always been been part of the hiring process. Going to the job fairs seeking out the best candidates. Now we need to start recruitment in high school & in college getting the brightest & best to consider teaching. #michED
A1: There should not be a need for the world's most noble profession but due to a reputation issue mixed with a pay and respect issue, teaching can be seen as a field to avoid. #miched
A1) Our SS deserve an education that opens the world to them through the new perspectives that new hires bring. If we want to keep offering new ideas and experiences , we need new teachers! #miched
A1) Everyone whom I've told I'm becoming a teacher answered in some variant of "you must really love working with kids." I do, but there should be more to the appeal of teaching than inspiring future generations. #miched
Connecting to the perception problem..... Q2: One reason cited for MI not proceeding to the next round of the Amazon HQ location was said to be because of our lack of talent. What role could teacher recruitment play in developing talent in MI? #MichEd
A1: Schools need to combat the negativity among public opinion. We need bright, energetic, and dedicated young people to join our profession. Especially when a school like mine will see 40% turnover in 5–7 years. #MichEd
A1: Bringing in new teachers helps bring new innovative and research teaching strategies. I also feel that being a new teacher I am able to bring a lot more technology to the classroom. I feel many people feel hiring new teachers is scary but we can bring so much new #MichEd
A1: There can be many negative thoughts and views about the teaching profession. Teacher recruitment is important to show young teachers entering this workforce how important their work is and how valued they are in a child life. #MichEd
A1: To some extent, we can blame the media, yes. But there are more and more positive media outlets for edu, like @Chalkbeat and @valeriestrauss among others. Media is not only bad. Teachers need to be writers and activists, too. #miched
In reply to
@sarahyogidds, @Chalkbeat, @valeriestrauss
A1. Definitely a significant problem - caused by many factors: media, legislature, society, and unfortunately and inadvertently, by some of us in the field. A lot of work to do in this area! #MichEd
Connecting to the perception problem..... Q2: One reason cited for MI not proceeding to the next round of the Amazon HQ location was said to be because of our lack of talent. What role could teacher recruitment play in developing talent in MI? #MichEd
A1. There's a lot of misunderstandings out there about what the day-to-day, administrative, and emotional labors of teaching look like because large parts of the job are so invisible + often lonely. When work isn't visible, it's hard to grasp, let alone value. #MichED
A1: Many people see teaching as a fall-back plan. We need people to see teaching as tough but rewarding job that provides opportunities & advancemnet #miched
A1: There are so many misconceptions about teaching as a profession. That narrative needs to be counteracted with positive recruitment efforts because teaching is difficult, but incredibly rewarding. #MichEd
A1: I think teaching is the type of job that almost everyone will feel like they understand because they have gone through school as a student, unlike many other professions. This could uniquely influence society's perception of teaching. #miched

I agree with you... we face an uphill battle. But, we have many advocates. In Michigan, we have @chalkbeatDET and Bridge Magazine, among others. Also, #miched itself is an amazing, positive media outlet. Can’t just blame bad media.
A2) We need to show students the connections they can make in the local area and the skills needed. Need more partnerships like the one we are undertaking with @duosec & @TreyBoynton#puremichigan is awesome but our students don't experience enough of it. #MichEd
A2: We need to see education as working TOGETHER with the business community. Not just with tech but schools should be seen as being able to churn out intelligent, ethical problem solvers #miched
A1: To some extent, we can blame the media, yes. But there are more and more positive media outlets for edu, like @Chalkbeat and @valeriestrauss among others. Media is not only bad. Teachers need to be writers and activists, too. #miched

I agree we need to take the lead to create our own story as educators. Not surprisingly, many major outlets do not pick up these positive stories (personal experience with trying frequently). #miched

Q2: This really needs to be a discussion with teacher prep programs. Colleges/Universities need to be at the table when we discuss the #MichiganMarshallPlan#MichEd
Connecting to the perception problem..... Q2: One reason cited for MI not proceeding to the next round of the Amazon HQ location was said to be because of our lack of talent. What role could teacher recruitment play in developing talent in MI? #MichEd
We need teacher recruitment for people who are willing to go the extra mile to impact children’s lives. I think that young teachers bring new and up to date strategies and research to implement in the classroom. #miched
Q2: This really needs to be a discussion with teacher prep programs. Colleges/Universities need to be at the table when we discuss the #MichiganMarshallPlan#MichEd
A2) If we can recruit teachers to follow their dreams, no matter what their passion is, they will convey that message to their students! Foster the talent that these students have and encourage them to show it! #michED
A1: Teacher recruitment is so important because education opens the doors to so everything. We need to show that this profession is the key to disrupting inequity and teaching our future generations how to be kind humans #MichEd
A2: This is an extremely tough question. I feel new teachers bring innovation to the students and the lack of talent will slowly turn into too much talent. #miched
A2: With that said, we really need to promote the recruitment of teachers that have the abilities to integrate skill and technology based activities into their lesson plans. #MichEd
A2: I'm not sure that "Lack of talent" is the real reason, as people will move to where there are opportunities. We should, though, create the environments to attract talent to MI in many ways #MichEd
A2. As new teachers we have the ability to foster all of our students unique qualities. Every child has different interests and has their teacher being able to pull out their unique qualities and interests will help those students grow into strong talented individuals.#MichEd
A2: I think we cannot create talent (as defined by business folks) unless we make a purposeful effort to make learning "REAL" --> https://t.co/xpmdhdrT86#miched
Also, loving kids is *a* baseline qualification for the job, not *the* qualification. This is a difficult profession, so you better have good practice + solid pedagogy + be willing to grow + improve all the time. Loving kids = being the best teacher they can have. #MichED
I think the desire to live in certain areas can be a problem as well. We have two colleges here in Lenawee but not many kids want to stay, its no Grand Rapids. #miched
As a college student, I notice a lot of my friends wanting to make positive social change, but few see teaching as the career that suits them. I often hear that it is too hard, too low-paying, or that it doesn't allow them to meet their ambition /1 #MichEd
Really lost in the discussion! We talk about welders, plumbers, and computer programmers, but who is going to get those students to that point?! #MichEd
A2: As educators, it is our responsibility to help students identify their talents and skills, help them grow in them, and empower them to use them for good. Teacher recruitment should focus more on teachers who share this value. #miched
Or people think that they have b/c they had an education experience.... just b/c I went to the doctor my whole life does NOT make me an expert in medicine #MichEd
A2: The lack of talent Amazon cited was mainly in the IT area. We need strong math & science teachers to provide quality instruction. We can ramp up in by preparing more teachers to instruct computer science courses, run coding clubs and act as sponsors for First Robotics. #michED
Unfortunate but true. I did leave for Chicago but came back to Michigan after leaving for 6 years. We need to give them a reason to come back, hopefully :) #miched
Yes, I just mentioned that to another person. Desire to live in certain places is playing a big part on student teachers sticking around this area. #miched
A2 While related, I don’t see this as a teacher recruitment issue as much as a focus on high-stakes tests consequence. Still, few people go into teaching for the test-prep opportunities. #MichEd
A2: While on one hand we should be working with businesses, on the other we are trying to prepare students for fields that don't even exist yet! We can do better with innovation. #miched
A2: Now finishing off my teacher education program at UM, I’ve learned that there is nothing more important than fostering a community in which all students can grow talent—in their own ways. We are trained to find those things that make kids tick and run with them! #MichEd
A3: I see them as interconnected. Teacher recruitment is impt b/c we face a shortage now BUT if we don't hire the right people and the profession doesn't develop into a compelling career, they will leave. #miched
A2: We also cannot develop talent if we do not let students FIND THEIR TALENTS... we have to help teachers change their pedagogy so students have more choice and voice in learning as well as loosen MMC so this can be expanded #miched
I feel that with a fresh set of ideas and teaching styles, these new teachers can teach students how to want to achieve and having students be leaders in Michigan will help show companies like amazon that Michigan is full of talent #miched
I also would be curious to know what difference SES makes when students decide their career paths. Are college students from more affluent backgrounds less likely to be a teacher than students from the low or middle class? My hunch is yes. Can you tell I teach stats?? #MichEd
A3: I see them as interconnected. Teacher recruitment is impt b/c we face a shortage now BUT if we don't hire the right people and the profession doesn't develop into a compelling career, they will leave. #miched
A3: Short term it is definitely retention. We need to keep our best and brightest from moving to the more lucrative private sector. But LT we are going to have a major teacher shortage nationwide. We need to recruit and retain talent here in #miched
A2. If there's a "grand narrative" about teaching + teachers out there, I'm not sure it's positive (and there are a lot of reasons for that). If that's the case, what makes teaching more attractive than something else to someone having to make career choices? #MichEd
A3: I feel that retention can be a major struggle for #miched because poor employment conditions and evaluations turn teachers away from continuing to work in MI.
A2: We also cannot develop talent if we do not let students FIND THEIR TALENTS... we have to help teachers change their pedagogy so students have more choice and voice in learning as well as loosen MMC so this can be expanded #miched
A3) I think retention is really key at the school / district level. What type of mentor programs do schools offer? That is key. I think recruitment should come more at the university level. What ways have schools been successful at recruitment for their schools? #MichEd
A2. How do we rewrite the "grand narrative" to reflect something different that does make teaching increasingly attractive to excellent candidates? That requires different thinking, priorities + levels of engagement beginning at the state level, in my view. #MichED
Q3: If we are talking about what the #MichEd community can better support it retention. A positive building culture with supportive, collaborative colleagues is essential to keeping staff engaged & happy. #michED
A3) While recruitment of teachers is certainly a huge issue for the profession, the fact that so many educators are burned out so they quickly is extremely worrisome. I would add, what about the teachers who have been burned out but stay because that’s “all they know”? #miched
A1: Educators aren’t built to brag about our profession. Teaching is the best job in the world!; but, we don’t always promote it in the same vein as other professional jobs when we talk to students/community. When we talk to our kids, push the best toward education! #michEd
A3: Short term it is definitely retention. We need to keep our best and brightest from moving to the more lucrative private sector. But LT we are going to have a major teacher shortage nationwide. We need to recruit and retain talent here in #miched
A2: I see talent every single day in the classroom, and while I think we can always be improving the resources we provide so students can develop and discover new talents, judging talent by a business' opinion concerns me. #miched
A3: Retention is so situation/locality dependent- schools/teaching environments have more control over this. Recruitment is much more broad- definitely needs to be hit by all educators at all times, esp at colleges. #MichEd
(Sara Rosell, Rochester High Science T)
Q3: If we are talking about what the #MichEd community can better support it is retention. A positive building culture with supportive, collaborative colleagues is essential to keeping staff engaged & happy. #michED
New teachers want to work at places where they see stability and if teachers are constantly leaving, the environment does not come off as stable #miched
I think teacher recruitment is a greater issue for #Miched . People are very hesitant to go into teaching these days. Being in university still I see the resistance all the time from people who have the passion for children and young learners but cant get over the negativity
A3:If we are talking about what the #MichEd community can better support it is retention. A positive building culture with supportive, collaborative colleagues is essential to keeping staff engaged & happy. #michED
A3: I feel recruitment and retainment are both sides of the same coin. It isn't an attractive job for many and the first few years can be overwhelming. $$ is part of it, but so are other factors like autonomy and respect. Need to be seen as not replaceable. #miched
A2: We can recruit teachers who match high-needs and creative fields. What programming are we offering in our schools? How are we hiring with creativity in mind? Show the connection between the classroom/career and the link provided by great teaching! #michEd
A3. Teacher retention is a huge issue. Pathways to professional growth + teacher leadership are uneven by school, by district + at the state level. How are we helping our very best continue to grow, thrive + most of all stay in the classroom? #MichEd
A3: Both are of utmost importance, but recruitment is the more severe issue. Enrollment in Ed programs is plummeting and MI is on it's way to crisis. Certs to unqualified Ts is not the answer. Pay is part, but mostly we need to restore the status symbol of being a T! #miched
This ties into A3: if we just consider that 60% of students from a high SES background attained at least Bachelor's degree within 8 years of HS compared to 29%, 14% for middle/low (NCES). A diminished view of teaching as a potential career among high SES ppl lowers supply #MichEd
I think teacher recruitment is a greater issue for #Miched . People are very hesitant to go into teaching these days. Being in university still I see the resistance all the time from people who have the passion for children and young learners but cant get over the negativity
A3) Teacher retention. Every happy teacher is free recruitment. Every burnt out teacher is free negative recruitment. I want a stable job in a community in which I can settle down and raise a family. #miched
Very true. Building culture is so important. Principals can make sure that we don't constantly have the "one more thing" added to our plates. Meaningful real input into building problems is nice to (don't ask for input if you already made up your mind). #miched
A4: I think aspiring #EdLeadership academies ran by district leaders among their own staff is one way of personalizing this movement and having them work with experienced Admins that work with the same students #miched
A4: I sound like a broken record BUT provide teachers who want more leadership opps that keep them w/ Ss at least part. It is no secret that many former MI Ts of the Year are NOT in the classroom anymore. We are losing our best to orgs & admin #miched
A4) @AAEdVoice was my foot into the door of working more with leaders and connecting online. All it took was an opportunity at my school. We need a teacher leadership pathway. I think someone was working on this at the #PoweredByTTL a couple of weeks ago. #MichEd
A4: Need more opps for Ts to have leadership roles while teaching (ie part time teacher/part time leadership). Schools need to become creative in scheduling to allow Ts to branch out of their classrooms- for their own professional growth & to support others (esp new Ts!) #MichEd
A4. Provide teachers with many opportunities to be leaders while they are teaching. Some will move to building leaders and at worst, there will be more teacher leaders - a really good thing! #MichEd
A3) Teacher retention. Every happy teacher is free recruitment. Every burnt out teacher is free negative recruitment. I want a stable job in a community in which I can settle down and raise a family. #miched
A4 if we define district leaders as administrators let @massp, @MASALeads, and successful admin mentor and teach them. if we define district leaders as teachers...then we need a better track and support for those who want to teach and lead from their classroom. #miched
A3: Recruitment seems to be a bigger issue in the field of education. This might possibly be because of how much work truly goes into this profession. #miched
A3. I don't think we can start talking about recruitment until we can collectively + systemically solve the retainment issues. If we recruit new people into systems that are fundamentally flawed, then we're creating future retainment issues. #MichED
I feel that it comes back to respect for the profession. I knew going in I would not make top dollar relative to what I could make (math/chem degree), but I knew I would make a _living_ and that I would be respected for my expertise. #miched#bringbackrespect
A4: Paid Admin internships, opportunities to be “teacher in charge”, having teachers lead PD and other committees & events are all essential to creating an Administrator pipeline in a district. #michED
A4: I think aspiring #EdLeadership academies ran by district leaders among their own staff is one way of personalizing this movement and having them work with experienced Admins that work with the same students #miched
I completely agree! I believe that a teacher who feels supported and is a part of a strong, tightly knit community of educators will naturally strive for excellence and leadership. #miched
A4: More, better, and intentional cross-district networking opportunities for qualified Ts looking to move into leadership. Since returning to MI from the east coast, this has been the biggest thing I've missed. Groups of Ts and leaders who get together to talk in person. #miched
A4: I sound like a broken record BUT provide teachers who want more leadership opps that keep them w/ Ss at least part. It is no secret that many former MI Ts of the Year are NOT in the classroom anymore. We are losing our best to orgs & admin #miched
I feel that teacher burn out rate is high enough to cause retention loss. Numerous causes such as teacher work load, low salary, teacher-student ratio are among the top contributors making teacher retention a bigger issue. #miched
A4: Intentional networking with leaders in other districts. Often just staying within the confines of one's own district can be detrimental to the growth of leaders. Need to see a bigger picture of what ed leadership looks like. #miched
A4 if we define district leaders as administrators let @massp, @MASALeads, and successful admin mentor and teach them. if we define district leaders as teachers...then we need a better track and support for those who want to teach and lead from their classroom. #miched
Amen, Kelley. We've talked about this before, but so many states are so much further ahead in creating real-deal, systemic pathways to keep teacher leaders teaching. #MichED
A4: Need more opps for Ts to have leadership roles while teaching (ie part time teacher/part time leadership). Schools need to become creative in scheduling to allow Ts to branch out of their classrooms- for their own professional growth & to support others (esp new Ts!) #MichEd
Yes, yes & yes. late nights, endless planning, changing to new "trends" every two years, etc. = burnout! #miched Wish more Tchs would share and plan together! #miched
A4: Intentional networking with leaders in other districts. Often just staying within the confines of one's own district can be detrimental to the growth of leaders. Need to see a bigger picture of what ed leadership looks like. #miched
A3: Retention happens at the local level—build the culture and great teachers will love their job! Recruitment is local and global and heavily tied to perception. Promote our jobs by showing examples of why this is a highly-skilled profession that others should pursue. #michEd
I feel that it comes back to respect for the profession. I knew going in I would not make top dollar relative to what I could make (math/chem degree), but I knew I would make a _living_ and that I would be respected for my expertise. #miched#bringbackrespect
A4: I think that if districts had a space where teachers can suggest ideas that "push the envelope" as well as a mentorship program, there would be lots to learn from previous leaders and leaders of the future! #miched
A4: Paid Admin internships, opportunities to be “teacher in charge”, having teachers lead PD and other committees & events are all essential to creating an Administrator pipeline in a district. #michED
Amen, Kelley. We've talked about this before, but so many states are so much further ahead in creating real-deal, systemic pathways to keep teacher leaders teaching. #MichED
A3) Both are important, but retention is the first to tackle (recruitment very close 2nd). Nobody looks at a sinking ship with passengers jumping off and says, "I'd like to board, please!" If T's are happy and enjoy the work, future T's will follow. #miched
A4: More, better, and intentional cross-district networking opportunities for qualified Ts looking to move into leadership. Since returning to MI from the east coast, this has been the biggest thing I've missed. Groups of Ts and leaders who get together to talk in person. #miched
A4: Administrators will create leaders in their building when they create an environment where Ts need to reach a goal and are given real freedom to reach that goal. T Leadership is not using Ts to get your goals across. #miched
What I've experienced thus far has been beneficial, but I believe we all want more time to collaborate and learn from the experienced admin in the district. #miched
A5 REAL district leaders need to empower others to be leaders, not just display power over others. This will grow leadership at all levels of their organization #miched
A2: One of my concerns is an observed lack of diversity in the teaching profession. In a school with 60-70% African-American students and only a few minority teachers. How can teacher recruitment be promoted to encourage diversity in the teaching profession?
A5) Teachers need to involved in budget decisions #teacherpowered That way we can make sure that the best resource possible THE TEACHERS are at the forefront of decisions and the #1 budget item. #MichEd
A4: Leaders can continue to provide opportunity and mentoring. Allow shadowing/principal-for-the-day, trust teachers to lead without fear of failure, involve teachers in decision-making. #michEd
I'm wondering if many stakeholders even see teacher retention as a significant issue? They might recognize people are leaving, but I think, right now, the solutions revolve around fast-track certification or increasing virtual classrooms rather than structural solutions. #MichED
A4: Leaders can continue to provide opportunity and mentoring. Allow shadowing/principal-for-the-day, trust teachers to lead without fear of failure, involve teachers in decision-making. #michEd
A5 Some of our recent grads (teaching rock stars) have left the profession because they could earn more money for less work and fewer hassles. 💔 #miched
A5) The kids who need us the most are in places that are hardest to recruit and retain teachers due to funding inequities both in our educational realm as well as society #miched
A5: Schools telling interviewees incorrect conditions and showing non-typical classes to get teachers to accept jobs. (Happened to former teacher asst.) #miched
That sad thing is that education, in certain states is not valued - I love my job. But I teach in #ontario and I don't know if I could teach if not compensated, at least, fairly #MichEd
A5: Conversations w/ my fam when choosing Teaching years ago - "But you're too smart to be a teacher." Have heard similar things from former Ss who are considering the career. Code for: you can make so much more $ in something else! #notaboutthe$ #MichEd
Q5: Low salaries seem to be driving talent out of the profession. Many teachers find it difficult to maintain an acceptable standard of living with the amount they are making. #miched
A5: I turned down two teaching positions this summer because with a Masters and 7 years, I was being offered far less than those in the district with less experience. #miched
A4) District Aspiring Academies are a start. Supporting Ts going to experiences offered through @massp@MEMSPA . Invite T's into leadership conversations and problem solving. #miched
A5: Unfortunately Districts all over the state “steal” teachers from lower paying neighboring districts. We definitely see Districts that pay more, have better facilities & more opportunities have few open positions. #miched
A4) As a T with no admin aspirations, I love leading PD. Opportunities for reflection time with peer T's is also amazing when available. Mentoring programs ❤️. Highlighting staff strengths and giving a chance to share that with coworkers. Everyone can be a leader. #miched
A5: Teaching salaries, in some districts, make teaching an entry level profession. One which we must consider leaving once we need to plan for our own kids' college funds. Many Ts were able to find a way to make it work... until they came for our benefits......... #miched
I'm wondering if many stakeholders even see teacher retention as a significant issue? They might recognize people are leaving, but I think, right now, the solutions revolve around fast-track certification or increasing virtual classrooms rather than structural solutions. #MichED
A5. I won’t get district specific, but there are several examples in our stare where both the pay and the working conditions create a situation where teachers leave for an improvement in both. Again, we continue to hurt ourselves. #MichEd
A5: Schools telling interviewees incorrect conditions and showing non-typical classes to get teachers to accept jobs. (Happened to former teacher asst.) #miched
A5: Unfortunately Districts all over the state “steal” teachers from lower paying neighboring districts. We definitely see Districts that pay more, have better facilities & more opportunities have few open positions. #miched
A5: I’ll go in a different direction from this. I see comments on SM that degrade Teachers salaraies as “pretty good for only working 9 months”. These type of comments really make our future educators think twice of going into education. #MichEd
A5: Approaching from the positive...I “grew up” as a teacher in a culture where the working conditions were collegial, caring, and student-centered. That—far more than salary—made me want to remain in the profession. #MichEd
A5: I’ll go in a different direction from this. I see comments on SM that degrade Teachers salaries as “pretty good for only working 9 months”. These type of comments really make our future educators think twice of going into education. #MichEd
Q6: There are #teacherprep bills proposed right now in #mileg. Talk to us about what impact does teacher preparation have on teacher recruitment? #MichEd
I believe a positive and happy environment fosters an upward positive growth in the teaching staff! If there is a collaborative & positive work environment, it will definitely help new teachers do more & would be encouraging! #MichEd
A5: Unfortunately Districts all over the state “steal” teachers from lower paying neighboring districts. We definitely see Districts that pay more, have better facilities & more opportunities have few open positions. #miched
A5: I know of a person who was offered $35K less to transfer districts. (lateral move) 25 yrs. experience, district wouldn't give any steps. First yr. teacher pay + masters was all. No other profession penalizes like this. #miched
We are cannibalizing ourselves! #miched this needs to change if we want to improve schools for all! Rich get rich and poor stay poor in current model Supts need incentives to collaborate!
Q6: There are #teacherprep bills proposed right now in #mileg. Talk to us about what impact does teacher preparation have on teacher recruitment? #MichEd
How to attract competent teachers who do want to maximize their income while weeding out those who haven't given serious thought to the challenges? Medicine has organic chemistry. What do we have? #miched

A6: What scares me is that some districts will be forced to settle on “warm bod” candidates in the next few years because new teachers are either ill prepared or non existent. Having to hire someone to simply fill an opening is not good on many different levels. #MichEd

A6) I feel like they go hand in hand. The stronger each become, the stronger the other will be. If it is a priority of colleges, universities, and schools, we will see an impact on all levels #miched
We better make sure that our future teachers are getting the training and the tools they need to thrive in a 21st century classroom environment. If we don’t start doing a better job at that, retention will be even a bigger problem! #MichEd
A6: Well it would be insincere to say that regulations for teacher certification have no effect on recruitment, my guess is that most people pursuing a career as a teacher are not thinking that. They want to know if they will be safe and happy in their career. #miched

A6:There is greater correlation between teacher prep & retainment. If Ts enter the professional with solid preparation they will survive the 1st couple of years which is where there is the highest rate of drop out. Teaching is currently a sink or swim profession. #miched
To recruit and retain the best, schools have to out compete all other careers #miched kind of tough of many aspects. Most jobs now have more flexibility that teaching and way less stress
#miched#mypccs#pccs#edtech Notion - A Project Management and Reference Wiki - Notion is an interesting service that combines elements of project management with elements of a wiki service. At its core Notion is designed for teams to work on project... https://t.co/ZNUV1orMoC
A6: As someone who will soon be a beginning teacher, I feel that if a prospective educator feels equipped to enter the classroom and feels confident in the ways they will be supported by their community of educators, the recruitment process will be much more successful. #miched

A5: movement across districts is a HUGE issue. People change companies...why not districts? Support struggling districts with more $ to balance. #miched

A6: How about a paid, apprentice teacher role for 1st year Ts. Reduced class load and observation/collaboration time with a rotation of master Ts in the school. On-the-job training and building professional networks at the same time. More coaching = better teaching! #miched
A6: I don't think teacher prep scares educators away. We have an impression of what to expect going into the classroom in today's climate. New Ts are more concerned about if the professional is a viable way to support their family. #miched

A6: Too many teacher prep programs are not truly “preparing” teachers for the classroom. I’m constantly amazed at how much more professional learning our young teachers need. Have teacher ed programs evolved along with our k-12 schools? They need relevant experiences! #miched
A6) $60k for second masters before starting my career at a lower pay grade than I could get by spending three days searching https://t.co/bH2KAbpBPN is somewhat illogical.
Luckily I chose with my heart. Schollies helped, but prep's expensive. #miched

A5: I think the very real issue is autonomy. I've heard of schools that have a teach-this-on-this-day structure. I feel the emphasis on testing=someone always looking over my shoulder. I think of the Hawtch-Hawtch watchers watching the bee. #miched
Q6 #MichEd Let’s start with the reading preparation... a reading diagnostic university class did not teach me how to teach reading. Reading Recovery (R) taught me literacy acquisition.
Q6: There are #teacherprep bills proposed right now in #mileg. Talk to us about what impact does teacher preparation have on teacher recruitment? #MichEd
A5: As I was starting education as my major, I was questioned by many people, even my family, for going into teacher because of the salary 😞 I followed my passion anyway! #MichEd
A6: Financial assistance! We pay a lot for continuing our education & training, only to be stuck with massive student loans while working for lower pay. #TeacherPrep bills must provide assistance to lower the cost of entry for educators. #MichEd
Love it! Teacher ed is good for the fundamentals, but a classroom has too many moving parts to accurately condense into a one year program. Even two would be pushing it. #miched
A6: Teacher prep is huge and key to getting to good Tchs. Need universities selling their programs and preparing Tchs for real experiences. Get them into schools at the start. That is why I only take @GVSUmath Ss Tchs! #miched
A7) If we have an intern at our building, we need to encourage them to explore other schools in the area. I just had a former student that was just given the opportunity to teach in Spec Ed and he LOVED it. Create the opportunity that colleges might not be giving Ts #miched

Schools of education have to do a better job advising candidates on certification! #miched who just has PE these days or only Bio etc need broad and more is better when it comes to certificates
Time in the classroom doing the work is really, really important to teacher education, so programs need to spend more time ensuring interns are in their placement working with students, parents, administrators + mentor teachers more often + for longer periods of time. #MichED

A7 Partnering with the benefactors of our efforts (private sector/public sector businesses) to provide incentives (loan forgiveness) to such teachers #MichEd
A6: But we also need quality Tchs willing to mentor those being recruited by univ. & continue to mentor into their 1st few yrs of teaching. Can't take St Tchs & go sit in the lounge! #miched
Perhaps a robust statewide salary schedule? - applied to all districts - allows movement. Cost of living factor applied to base district salaries for those teaching in more expensive areas of state? #miched
This surely would be a good thing for growth, but as a current student teacher, I find it so boring when I observe for 80% of the day. I love the teaching part, having to do another year in the backseat would be a huge bummer to me. Conflict between growth & passion #miched

A7: Pondered this one for a long time. I can't think of anything better than market-based solutions. A B.S. in Science will get you 70k starting at DOW Chemicals... teaching isn't competing in the market labor market for people with those degrees. #miched
STEM teachers are hard to find because STEM is the king of delayed rewards. Undergraduate debt. Subsistence wages for masters and PhD work. Also time. Why would a newly minted scientist NOT make bank in industry instead of teaching? #miched
But at this point, passion is all we have as a selling point. I’m not willing to be so quick to dismiss it. @Mcsqrd18 is going to be a tremendous teacher-leader thanks to her passion. Now let’s find a way to compensate her. #miched
A6: Why are teachers paying a full semester tuition when they (we) student teach? In what other profession do you pay to work? You may be paid less (journeyman, intern, na-uhe-uhe-uhe-bee #scrubs) In some places that is 1/3 1st yr salary! #miched
Last Qs for #miched! Q8: Are there any statewide ideas that you think would positively impact teacher recruitment in MI?
Do you have any other ideas for #miched statewide teacher recruitment?
A7: 1 reason I didn't consider teaching ELL or Special Ed is b/c I didn't know it was an option. Maybe more awareness and transparency about options and benefits would help. For newcomers in the field, it can be daunting to get all the info and make informed choices. #miched
I have my bachelors in Actuarial Math and would likely be making three times as much compared to teaching...but I didn’t see it as fulfilling. I’m an exception in current society so unless pay matches other STEM fields, how else does teaching differentiate effectively? #miched

Definitely not dismissing it! Passion is one part of the equation is what I think @blocht574 & I are stressing. Many outside of ed think it is the only part #miched
In reply to
@delta_dc, @blocht574, @Mcsqrd18, @blocht574
I think that we need to make sure that all teachers get the same salary. True Sci could make more in the market, but as we try to grow the complete students, I don't hold myself (math) above the importance of band, or gym, or English. #miched

A8) We need to create a teacher leadership pathway / more #teacherpowered schools in #miched The more opportunities that teachers have to lead / make decisions in a school, the better off we will be. Teachers want to work at places where they can have a say in school policy.

I think college advisors are very weak...this is part of the problem. Students in the College of Ed don’t even know what all the options are and what jobs are in demand. #michED

A7) Flexibility w/ conditions & keep in mind it's not exactly the same as GE classroom teaching. Realistic time frames for prep, data collection, meetings, etc. Contracts seek fairness, but fair doesn't mean everyone gets the same; it means everyone gets what they need. #miched
If not a law, something that pushed it across districts. It might work if certain districts started trends so other districts lost teachers .... #miched
Currently, many teachers find themselves unable to provide for their family of four on their teacher salary alone. Some teachers must find second jobs in order to make enough to put food on the table and a roof over their heads! #miched
A8: Teacher Ed CTE programs would allow us to start in HS to promote the profession in our own backyard. After all, many students would love to return to their hometowns and give back! #miched
A7: As we recruit for high needs areas, we need to recognize that they are still part of a complete K-12 system. I seriously could not teach elementary. Their work to both instill a skill set and keep the wonder of learning alive is essential for my success at HS. #miched
It’s definitely a balance between short term and long term. I, for one, feel like I grow much more when I experience something. I’m sure there’s modifications that could be done to accommodate people though #miched
A6 #teacherprep#miched Makenit like Doctor prep .. paid internships at teaching schools, learning at the feet of best teachers! With specialty programs etc
