Hi #teachnvchat! I'm Sara, a kindergarten teacher in snowy Lake Tahoe. Still out to dinner for husband Zack's birthday. Happy to comoderate with the super awesome @BDicksonNV!
Question 1 Even as Olympians want to win, they are often gratified to have participated. How do we teach our students to fully participate in all aspects of their education even though they don't get the gold medal in every subject? #teachNVchat
A1: Make it fun and relevant and be passionate for your students, a lot of kids may not like your subject but will be more engaged if you go the extra mile #teachnvchat

A1 Make a connection. Let Ss know we are glad they’re here, that we honor their voice, that they have something to offer. Make it a safe place. #teachNVchat
A1 - I spend a good amount of time in my AP Psych class focusing on effortful learning...cognition, explicit retrieval of information. I guess that's fully, mentally participating in education.

A1 I think growth mindset helps with Ss (and athletes too!) a student needs to know that while he/she will not be the best at everything they can strive to be their best and be working to compete against themselves to always improve #teachNVchat
A1: As student in K-12, my district was very competitive, fostering environment in which I saw peers as against me, rather than as resources to learn from and share with. Now, I try to instill more of a collaborative culture with students. #BetterTogether#teachNVchat

A2: It helps to share a bit of the struggle of our own lives, and how we have dealt with adversity. Model for students by being authentic. #teachNVchat
A2: Share your story. Everybody has gone through struggles in their life and gotten to where they are, share that journey and show Ss that they aren't alone #teachnvchat
A2: not an easy fix, but taking the focus off of "getting it done" and grad s, so there isn't a fear of trying and maybe failing. It's a philosophical/culture shift. Putting learning in the center and scores on the outer edge. #teachNVchat
A2 - May sound like a broken record...
To paraphrase from Make It Stick, "Information easily learned is easily forgotten."
If there's not real cognition or working to transfer or use the material, long-term learning is much less likely.
#teachNVchat
A2: We have to model this for students. We can try things..fail...keep trying until it works-do it together as a class. #teachnvchat When we’re struggle-be encouraging-scaffold when needed.
A2 give them chances to persevere too. Don’t let work be “one and done” If it wasn’t done right the first time allow them to do it again until they and you are satisfied #teachNVchat
A2: coming out of lurking for a moment. As a 3rd grd T this is hard to teach. We take time to reflect after the process and look back at the struggles and then look at where they finished. #teachNvchat
A2 More than praise the effort, work with them. Let them take the lead. Don’t call them out for errors. I let errors go in my Book Club. Ss caught the errors and dug back in text. Trying to defend error, S saw where he made mistake and owned it. #teachNVchat
A3: Demonstrate examples of the process, how you got your college degree, how ppl in their community got to where they are, incorporate it as a project of sort to have them talk to a parent, family, etc. about what they had to do to get to where they are #teachnvchat
I love pointing out mistakes that students have learned from- it always makes them feel good to learn from something they were initially frustrated with #teachNVchat
A3: Hey #teachNVchat tweeps! Praise hard work & grit. It is not how smart you are but how hard you work. Be intentional about mindsets & model real life examples.
This is a constant battle in my head. Trying to get so many awesome things done and sometimes (usually?) rushing through the process of the valuable work. #teachNvchat
A3: Storytelling. Tell stories of people who have faced adversity and have achieved goals, even if they have not won first place. Show how gratified they feel. True stories reach the heart. They are authentic. #teachNVchat
A3 I think students understand when they've actually earned the victory vs. the participation ribbon. It's important we are real with our students! #teachNVchat
A3: such great Q. This is leadership. We are a Leader in Me school. We Talk about this daily. It can be hard with younger Ss but they persevere and we celebrate the perseverance. #teachNvchat
I do this too. Trying to share more of myself and my life with my students with stories about overcoming fear, working hard to earn degrees, etc. #teachnvchat
A3 Don’t devalue the effort and success. Honor the struggle. There can be a valedictorian, etc. Someone can be number 1. How do we as Ts structure it so all Ss have an opportunity to win win gold? #teachNVchat
Too many times Ss only see the final picture (the all-star athlete, the movie star) they don't see the process, the perseverance, deliberate practice, and just plain hard work- We need to share that side with kids. #teachnvchat
A3 Just finished CKLA unit, Fighting for a Cause. Love the real people and their struggles/perseverance - Cesar Chavez, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson... #teachnvchat
