Hi! Welcome to . Tonight we are talking about math workshop. Let's start out with introductions! I'm Carol from Birmingham!
I'm Jennifer, third grade teacher crashing the , from Birmingham, AL!
Hello all, Katrina, 2nd and 3rd grade math coach from Charlotte, NC.
So glad you are joining us! AND I love that you are from Birmingham, AL! :)
That's awesome that you can be a coach for just grades 2-3. Our math coaches are K-5!
Hi! I'm Linnea and I'm still a junior in college, but want to work with 2nd graders! I go to Grove City College in Pennsylvania
Don't you teach at Greystone? Right down the road at Oak Mountain Elementary!
Hi all! I'm Amanda 2nd grade teacher from Birmingham!
I do! We are just right down the road from each other!
2nd graders are the best!
Sophia 2nd grade teacher near Chicago IL
YEAH! It's Amanda! She is one of my Hoover peeps!
I'm Molly and I teach in The Colony, TX (in the DFW area)
We are very fortunate to have multiple coaches. Don't see that very often.
Hi Margie from PA - K-12 Math Coach
I'm Toni from Illinois and I love math.
Let's give everyone a couple more minutes to get here but Q1 coming up soon!
Hi Carol! Great topic this evening!
Hi, Toni! Good to see you. I LOVE math too! I didn't as a kid but LOVE it now!
I'm excited about it! Ready to learn!
We have a math coach at every school but they have the whole school which is probably hard.
We are following the Q and A format. Question1 will be answered by A1.
Math is my favorite thing to teach!! Kara from Johnston, IA
This is the first time we have had multiple coaches. 3 total math coaches this year. I like the narrowed focus.
Hi Kara! It has become my favorite too!
Math coaches per every 2 grades would be AMAZING!!! I wish we had that!
Hi Suznne from Chicago IL
A1: I hope some of you math workshop gurus can help explain what math workshop is. Does it include a mini-workshop, then groups?
We don't even have a math coach! =( I'd take anything!
Most schools in my district only have 1 math coach. Some have none. My prin values the role of a coach so we have more.
Thank you SO much for stopping by tonight! :)
Q1: What is math workshop- what does it look like?
That is what mine looks like when I do math workshop. Wondering if it looks the same other places?
been doing guided math for a few years now I use it as part of the math workshop model
A1: Math workshop is the chance for Ss to work on math activities based on their data. Can be in groups or independent work.
What does yours look like?
A1: I think it might be related to guided math..? Math gurus, I have my own Q1: What's the diff btwn guided math & math workshop?
A1: We don't rotate, everone works on what they need to work on! Review skills, current skills, or real world bump it up
A1 Whole group review or intro- then Tech, Game and small group centers
A1:MWS can be adapted to your purpose - some do a guided math approach with mini-workshops & stations & SGI https://t.co/fkhuveqJti
A1: I hope some of you math workshop gurus can help explain what math workshop is. Does it include a mini-workshop, then groups?
I assess, group students then we are off! Three rotations: me for guided lesson, digital, and desk work
A1: My students work in rotations. Teacher group, practice group, math journal, and game group
A1: We start with a number talk and then diffientated stations. I pull small groups or become a station to see kids.
Desk work is always differentiated-usually using Kathy Richardson materials to build number sense
Q2. How long does math workshop last?
A1: Sometimes I teach lesson in small group with others in stations, depends on what it is!
A1: Ss work in either small groups of the same level or individually. With rotations and different types of lessons
A2: Some of my teachers have taken on the BUILD math stations that matches perfectly with The Daily Five
YEAH! It's Karen! HI! I missed seeing you at edcamp!
We do w/whole group 2 set purpose & then split to groups. Ss should be exploring, explaining & hands-on. Ss talk more than me
I'm a sophomore PreK-4 El Ed major at Grove City College but hoping to join in on this chat tonight!
A2 Math workshop lasts 15-20 min whole group 60 minutes for 3 rotations.
Mini lesson for 10 min and focus on objective-15 to 20 min. per rotation-then we meet to close for 5 min. at the end of time.
A2 We have 60-75 minutes a day - first thing in the morning
A2: I try to have 2 activities for students to do with their group. 10-15 min each task or Ss are off task!
A1: I have math for 1 hour in the am and 3 days a week I have extra math time where we at games.
A2: When I do math workshop, it lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes. 10 minutes for mini lesson, 1 hr for groups, 5 close
A2: Workshops should be about 20 minute rotations. But if Ss are struggling, can always add more time
A2: math block is 90 min. Includes ML, student choice time, small group instruction but it is flexible based on class needs
A2: 1 hour+ 15 min. Whole group and 4 rotations.
A1: As a preservice teacher I haven't lead a math workshop - assuming it's a time for Ss to explore new math topics!
A2: Math time is about 1 hr. and 15 mins or so... in stations for about 30? Depends on the day and what we're doing!
That's what I do pretty much too! Twinkies :)
A2: I think it varies, but the inclusion of all parts is what is most important: mini-lesson, rotations, & closing.
A2 Unfortunately our K-2 Ts have very little time 4 Math in the day.Not sure why. Want to change that - Really limits workshop time
A2: 10-15 minutes in number talk. Stations for 10 or a little more minutes. 5 minute closing at the end.
how much time do they have?
I feel they need as much for math groups as they do reading groups.
how long do you typically have for math?
A2: I dropped the rotating stations a few months ago.. went two tasks in with one group where Ss can work on what they need..
I have been researching number talks. I really want to implement it next year with my teachers.
K-2 need LOTS of time to explore numbers. I know a lot do a 30-45 minute math lesson- but it's not enough time
does this seem to be working better for you?
Our K-3 Ts only get 45 min each day, while our 5-8 Ts have 90 per day :(
I have used some of the EngageNY lessons, but does this allow for small group time? I find the lessons are very long.
Two days a week 1hr 15 min, three days a week 1hr
Number talks are awesome! Theyre a purposeful short time where students share strategies to solve problems mentally
The lessons are long but I think you could do small group later on in the day.
Greetings hopping in late to get some Math workshop ideas! I'm Stefanie from Peoria, IL
I think an ideal math workshop would last at least 20 minutes if not more!
wow that is very little time :( is the school day mainly spent on reading/writing?
. And I pull groups as needed! Can spend 5 mins with a group or 15 whatever I need..
Engageny is eureka math but free. It is a curriculum. Google it. They have a ELA to
Are those times mandated by the district? 45 min is not enough time.
Q3: How do you open math workshop?
LOVE Engage NY!! Use it a lot!
A2: I think an ideal math workshop would last at LEAST 20 minutes, if not more!
A3: I usually open with a problem from the Global Math Twitter Task Challenge or a Number Talk on the concept focus
I teach a large group part then we try an application problem.
A3: With a mini lesson about what the students are working on, followed by the instructions of all the stations/rotations
A3: I use a daily oral math in the morning from Evan-moor to get our brains going.
We either start whole group on the carpet or with our daily intentional problem solving.
A3: Open with number talk, learning target and what's expected for exit ticket!
A3 Start with number talk, 180 days of math, intro to new concept, manipulative play or teach me something https://t.co/SmJ2TOiqsB
Q3: How do you open math workshop?
A3 W/ we start with mental math in large group, math message, and sometimes a video or an entrance slip to distinguish groups
Q4 coming up (almost 1/2 through the chat already!)
Q4. How many groups do you have and how do you determine the groups?
Start with a whole group lesson. Sometimes we warmup with#gmttc2.
A4: Groups should be flexible based on data. Not all Ss need the same thing. I may have 4 groups today, but 5 groups tomorrow.
Q4: I usually have 4 groups. I give a pretest of some sort before I start a new unit of study to meet needs of students.
A3:Start with a challenge problem then dive into more achievable problems in small groups! Finish by going over the initial problem
A3: I either do a number talk based on a concept we are covering or I do a problem from the Great Math Task Twitter Challenge.
A4: 3-4 Groups; based on exit tickets; intentionally partner Ss in those groups
Yes mine can change but typically mine seem to fall well into 4 groups. The number in the groups change a lot though
. I like that! I may add "must do" and "can do" to mine!
A4 4groups, determined by pre-test scores of each unit. Keep them flexible to switch at any point during the unit!
A4: 3-4 groups (usually 3, but I'll pull an individual if needed).
Flexible is definitely the name of the game! https://t.co/jiY4EmlE3q
A4 4groups, determined by pre-test scores of each unit. Keep them flexible to switch at any point during the unit!
Mine done stay in their group to meet with me; I pull Ss as needed and keep them as short or as long as I want. I'm not a rotation
A3:start with Number Talks, then trying out Graham Fletcher's 3-Act Math Lessons, Go Math (wouldn't recommend), stations and SGI
A4: About four groups should work well! Ss grouping can change if and when necessary.
I think this works best. T should not be a rotation. Not everyone needs to see her everyday.
A4: I have 4 groups and I vary from cooperative groups to ability groups. I usually determine groups by a pretest.
I want to see each of mine every day. I want to challenge those that have already mastered it too
Curious as to what are your class sizes?? I'm at 24 this year, highest I've ever been...
21 this year. One of my highest years since I moved to Hoover.
17 (smallest I have ever been)
2nd grade classes at my school range between 18 and 23 students
17 is a GREAT number. It's been awhile since I saw it but miss it. :)
A4: I asked about class size because that can definitely change things!
Carol, I totally agree. I think those in need of a challenge are the most often forgotten.
We have 26-30 students in each of our K-2 grade classrooms
Q5. How many stations do you have and how do students rotate through them? (if you don't rotate-explain what it looks like again)
It makes me sad. They NEED it! They need to grow every day too, not just the intervention kids
I rotate every 15 minutes and they are different math games.
THAT IS MADNESS! Where do you teach?
. I don't always meet with Ss I'm challenging, but they turn their things in on Google and I respond as needed
That's a great idea, that I'm sure those Ss love!
3 rotations-teacher-digital (we are a tech demo class so we have 10 iPads)-desk work to work on fact fluency
I like to meet w/ them to hear their thinking. Sometimes they are great at the procedure but lack conceptual understdg
Can you challenge them without meeting with them everyday? Or can it be a quick check in instead of whole lesson?
Absolutely! I meet with them, just not everyday!
A5: I have 4 stations. teacher, digital/practice, math journal, & usually game/application task of some sort
I'm wanting a math journal next year.
A5: I have 4 stations and use https://t.co/3CRWq4BVCd (fun stop watches for Ss) so that students know when to switch
Hands on, at your seat, math facts, iPad
Q5:I meet with everyone.4 stations.6 tops in a group.Groups w/o me are usually doing things that they can post on Seesaw.
. Also why I like not rotating.I can meet with them quickly if needed to clarify & send them on their way or keep them
do you teach a large group lesson first?
Amen! Important to peel back the layers and identify whether the errors are conceptual or procedural.
I'm sure I can but I feel personally, I do a MUCH better job if I meet with them every day
A5: Ss don't rotate, Review stations, current skill stations, and bump it up stations. ~2 tasks at each station. (1 of 2)
A5 we have 4 groups & usually the group before coming to me has an into activity/video before the lesson - we switch every 15 min
A5: The number of stations will need to be based on how many students there are and how long the class is. Rotation is good!
before did stations, but I found I spent less time on the lessons for the guided groups and more time managing supplies
Yes, I usually teach a short lesson. Some days I do not do groups. I need to teach whole group and explore before groups
We're so the same! Just different names!
Love the idea of Ss posting to during math workshop! Brilliant!
A5: I pull groups (1-5) as needed and keep them as long or as short as I need to!
A5: I LOVE rotating through stations and so do my kids. It fits their attention span PERFECTLY. :)
I can check what they are doing in between center rotations or at the end of the day!! It's the best!
I know! :) Love it! Too bad we don't teach at the same school. BUT with tech we can still plan together. We need to!
A5: We don't have stations. We allow students to choose their activity based on the data they track based on quizzes and tests.
A5 3 rotations: me, tech and review (usually start with word problem) love that they explain their thinking w/recording
Q6. What do students do in the stations including the teacher station? (give examples please)
A5: I don't rotate because everyone doesn'tneed everything! (some don't need review practice & some don't need current skill yet!)
SeeSaw is my favorite app for finding out what students are thinking!
Do you just have tubs with activities for them to choose?
Everyone has to set it up like they like- it's all cool!
A6: Since I'm just a preservice teacher, I would love ideas!
Yes. If my data says I need to work on adding 2 digit numbers, I go pick an activity for that standard.
I like this idea... not sure I would help them keep up with data enough for it to work, though!
A6: All centers match concept: Math journ: 1-2 good multi-step problems, practice- usually on iPad, application- iPad task card
A6 We also use the link button to share YouTube/teaching videos for S & P to reference as needed
A6: and in the teacher group- we practice problems on concept with difficulty to meet the needs of students in group
A6 Multiple exposure to Concrete, Representational, Abstract doing sometimes needs-based, sometimes lesson-driven, sometimes review
That is def the challenge. Ts that have Ss constantly track data, have the best growth so far.
A6: Math Fluency: Math Games with DD addition. Tech: DD Number Talk video on Math at your seat: WP with DD for Math journal
A6 We also use the link button on to share YouTube/teaching videos for S & P to reference as needed
A6 We also use the link button on to share YouTube/teaching videos for S & P to reference as needed
A6: Review game/prob for those who are not getting current concept; Current skill game for extra practice and bump it up
A6: I try to have one station hands on using manipulatives, one review, one working on a new concept, and one with me
A6: Teacher is based on current concept and pulled based off misconceptions from exit ticket the day before and/or other data.
A5: Hands on Math:Models of DD addition with base 10 blocks.Take a picture on .Label with pen tool. Type strategy with text.
A6 our stations include technology, collaboration & communication with problem solving and games, and independent practice
Haven't tried this. Is that within the post or something you do after post is made?
How does everyone include student choice in their math workshop?
Here are some iPad task cards I made for reading and math stations-I love hearing them think aloud! https://t.co/Q6YsJK42Ff
iPad= STRIDE, IXL, mathtopia app,Osmo, educreations
I have student choice in the mornings during my intervention time. Ss can pick math games, math websites and coding
Q7. How do you close math workshop?
y google drive link didn't work.
Is this during math workshop or at a different time of day?
Mine usually have choices in which math game and choice of app to practice same skill
WOW! these are great. May I make a copy?
A7: It is important to have some time for students to share what they learned to wrap up workshop time.
It's at a different time of day, after morning work and during intervention
A7 Exit ticket or quick check - this determines lesson for tomorrow! https://t.co/CbwZMSIkdP
Q7. How do you close math workshop?
A7: Looking at the learning target again and completing exit ticket that determines grouping for the next day!
A7: Review content and go over the answer to the challenge problem we started with!
A7 We come back together in Lg group and discuss what we learned & what we need to know more abt 2 be successful/what 2 practice
Q7: reviewing new strategies shared, and misconceptions along with a review of topic.
We have Math Talk cards at stations. Ss gather to debrief on carpet with math talk cards 3 reflect learning https://t.co/QbquGuBYBU
Q7. How do you close math workshop?
Here is a link to our youtube videos and written directions for math games we play in and out of class https://t.co/BAqNea8teU
Last questions coming up- get your favorite resources ready in case you haven't shared already!
Love that you have students talking about their learning in math. So important.
Thank you! I love them too! Hearing their voices is SO powerful!
Q8:Where do you find resources for math workshop?
we don't spend as much time in stations 30 mins or so. They have ~2 tasks to work on to keep busy!
A7: Come together as a large group again and review what was learned and answer any questions Ss have!
I can't wait to d some of these ideas fr next year
A7: I like exit slips that have a sunny and cloudy side. They tell something that is clear and something they still have ?'s about.
I love that. Do they draw it or do you have them printed?
A8: Howard County Schools, EngageNY, NCDPI (will look for this website and post soon)
A7: "Today your job was to take a survey and show data on a graph. Thumbs up if you ____. " etc. K.I.S.S.
Q8: K-5 teaching resources, North Carolina, Illuminations, Illustrative mathematics, gregtang, matific... probably too many!!
A8: I love using problems from the for mini lessons, math journals or application tasks.
A8 Math curriculum, TPT, Howard County, Engage NY, Twitter :) https://t.co/NChkUfrCxO
Q8:Where do you find resources for math workshop?
A8: Twitter is an AWESOME resource of course! I see what other teachers are doing and it inspires me! :)
A8: I have an awesome group of 2nd grade teachers in my district. We meet once a month after school at Panera to share ideas!
Twitter has been my most favorite resource this year!
A8: are good hashtags to search too!
I'm interested in how your Ss track their data. We are a Leader in Me school and will be doing more of that next yr!
If you send DM your gmail to me, I will be happy to share things with you via google drive.
I think the BIG take away tonight is to meet the needs of ALL of your students. There are LOTS of ways to do that!
I hope you enjoyed the chat! I will be tweeting a storify and some type of archive of the chat in a bit. :)
Oh, thank you!! Will you follow me where I can? Thanks!
