We are about to get started #pln365. Tell us a little about you first like who you are, where you work and what position you hold. Remember we bring the answers and you will develop the questions. A1)... -> Q1) format
#pln365 I'm not sure you build a caring classroom BEFORE teaching content. I think you do them simultaneously. A "caring classroom" takes time. It is nurtured, pruned, and eventually blooms. In the meantime, we actually do need to learn some content.
This is so difficult when the curriculum is dense. Theoretically time invested there should pay off but balance is needed. We don't want HS Ss skipping the first week bc we "aren't doing anything." #pln365

Empathy can be a superpower - the ability to make decisions understanding and projecting the emotions it will evoke in your stakeholders enables leaders to be truly great. #pln365

Hey Shana! Thanks for joining us tonight. We provide the answers. The people provide the questions.
By the way, I missed seeing you at #ISTE18 this year. #pln365
That they are the ones that most likely need us to be superhuman the most. We do not get to quit trying. Precisely why education is such a difficult profession. #pln365
Q3 Why do we need to continue to build relationships and work to connect with each student? Why is it critical that we let students know we will not give up on them? #pln365
Q3: How might this quote apply to our work: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – MLK #pln365

As principal of a school of close to 700, I definitely need strategies to do this more effectively on a greater scale, but in my first year I mentored young writers, played a lot of games at recess, and attended my fair share of dance recitals and baseball games. #pln365
Q3 What are some signs teachers and staff can notice to help students who are acting out? #pln365 Side note-behavior is Communication. What are they trying to tell you?
A3: I think sometimes they are the ones who need recognition the most. #pln365 They tend to be the ones who will respond to respectful dialogue. It may take a while but you can reach them! 🗣
Q3: What can we do so our students learn to trust, let go of old habits and finally learn that attention is coming, even if they don't act out? Unconditional love, forgiveness, teaching self-regulation. #pln365
#pln365 Terry 4th grade T from AL sliding in. For those hard to reach SS I go overboard on corny jokes, antics, and relationship bldg until they turn arnd. It works
I’m very late. I found #flipclass has been great for this. Every s gets attention every day, it isn’t always about content but about what’s going on with them. #pln365

I love to build a relationship with challenging Ss! 2 years ago I reached 1, although she couldn't communicate it verbally. Whenever she saw me this year, she would take a piece of tape off my cart to show we were stuck together. #PLN365
#pln365 I love this Q. In our class, Ss start by working together on the previous night's hmwk..asking and answering Qs in small groups. When Ss learn that they can be generous helpers, they WANT to come to class because they feel valued. (Providing good Qs is generous!)
A1. Empathy is the ability to understand, be aware, and co-experience the feelings and thoughts of others. Especially students, parents, and colleagues. We can't put Ss in a position to succeed without understanding where they've come from. Empathy is crucial for Ts #pln365
A3) self awareness
When you are confident in yourself, you carry yourself well, you know who you are... that send a message to your students that you are someone they can trust.
So you reach out & ask them about themselves w/ NO BS. You can’t fake caring for them...
#PLN365
... and you then become a constant, with your self awareness as your light, and your love and desire for them to be better as a door wide open
Then one day they open up to you. From that moment on, you never let them go. Because it’s not just about them... #PLN365
... it’s also every other student in the room that is watching you, to see how reliable and trust worthy you are.
Your sending a message to all of your students; if I can care about “this kid”, then they are all worthy of love and attention
#PLN365
#pln365 A4: Demonstrate belief in their potential not by pushing them down a path you think they could go down. Rather, just remove the emotional walls and anchors they bring in....and let them find the direction and magnitude of their own potential.
@josuefalaise Thank you for this chat! Love the idea of this Flipped Chat! Totally gonna steal it for the chats I moderate for Israeli Ts on FB #pln365
I sometimes think we don't listen enough to the kids before we jump to conclusions about their behaviors or attitudes. We have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. #pln365
For some Ss it will take longer for them to realize because they have been abused or rejected for so long. Doesn't mean we should give up on them. They need even more love. #pln365
At least you realize where you can grow. Once staff sees that your modeling the practices, having those conversations with them and Ss, it starts the change. I was principal for 14 years. So I have lived it. Keep the faith! #pln365
It is sad but I choose to lead by example rather than live in complacency. If I am doing something the same as 20 years ago, there is a problem! #PLN365
