Welcome to #NYEDChat friends. We're talking Leading & Learning in 21st C w/ @donald_gately & @dmgately. Their thoughts were influenced by powerful ideas in ASCD best-selling book by @E_Sheninger@thomascmurray: Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools. Today.
Tonight #NYEDChat welcomes the Gatelys who have been preparing a great line-up of questions based on the ideas of @E_Sheninger & @thomascmurray. Please introduce yourself with your role and location.
I'm Carol ELA Consultant and Moderator of #NYEDChat from Long Island. I will be double dipping tonight because my fellow @Wonderopolis Wonder Lead Ambassadors are moderating #WonderChat. Let's see if I can juggle two balls tonight. Excuse the "heavy" flow of tweets.
Hello -- Dennis -- Middle School Principal from Long Island, NY. Looking forward to an awesome #NYedchat with @donald_gately & @dmgately feat. questions based on #LT8Keys ...a great book!
Tom, co-author of @ASCD Learning Transformed #LT8Keys. With my two littles tonight so jumping in as I can! (Also grew up in Orange County, NY!) #NYEDChat
Q1 Whether you believe there is an educational crisis in this country or that we could simply do better, what is the source of your URGENCY? What do you think is most in need of innovation in our schools? What needs to change? #NYEDChat
I truly believe we need to find ways to help Ts develop interdisciplinary projects as a way to meet standards. I would also love School to not have to be a building instead embedded throughout the community. #NYEDChat
Please tag in a colleague to join #NYEDChat. Check it out: 2200 NY CEs! https://t.co/wQh2zTIkYG
We'll be using the standard Q1/A1 format in tonight's #NYEDChat. Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation as we #CelebrateMon#NYEDChat
A1 My sense of urgency is that many colleges aren’t preparing teachers to be decision makers. Changing mindsets from fixed to growth needs to happen. Need to build a collaborative school culture and make school- based professional learning a priority. #NYEDChat
A1. I truly believe we need to find ways to help Ts develop interdisciplinary projects as a way to meet standards. I would also love School to not have to be a building instead embedded throughout the community. #NYEDChat
A1: I am grateful everyday to work w inspiring educators who help me to be a better me. In recent years I believe there has been a resurgence of professional growth & a recognition of the need to keep learning. Much of this is fueled by the technology available to us #NYedchat
A1 I think we need to get away from the idea that school is about grades, and focus more on learning and collaboration. High grades do not always equate to learning and future success. #nyedchat
A1: The source of urgency for our work stems from the fact that if we believe we can do better, we need to do it now. Our students' time is precious. Let's make the best of it. #NYedchat
#NYEDChat Q1 Whether you believe there is an educational crisis in this country or that we could simply do better, what is the source of your URGENCY? What do you think is most in need of innovation in our schools? What needs to change? #NYEDChat
A1: We need to return to giving Ss more ownership of learning through student centered/directed learning(PBL, CBL) even cooperative learning. We have fallen into this silent wink/nod, T will deliver and S will consume; time to end this T centric model. #nyedchat
A1: There are some amazingly innovative learning experiences happening in our schools. Problem? It’s often in pockets. We have HUGE issues with EQUITY in our nation. #NYedchat
A1: My sense of urgency comes from the ever evolving role of computerized mechanisms automating so many jobs! We need th gives students the soft-skills to perform jobs that can’t be automated and enable them with skills to manage those mechanisms! #nyedchat
Joining from Connecticut.
A1) My urgency is schools in isolation, not doing enough to break down the walls between them and the community and world. Some educators are committed to breaking down those walls, but they can't be in isolation, either. #nyedchat
Q1 Whether you believe there is an educational crisis in this country or that we could simply do better, what is the source of your URGENCY? What do you think is most in need of innovation in our schools? What needs to change? #NYEDChat
Q1 We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist yet....I believe we need to place a greater emphasize on skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, etc #NYEDChat
A1 Today at my #elanetwork meeting on Long Island we talked about the top 10 skills needed in 2020. Creativity ranked #3. We absolutely need our students to tap into their creative spirits. #NYEDChat
A1 I also think we need to look at the job skills are students will need for the future. What will future jobs look like? What skills are important for our students to learn? #nyedchat
A1: My sense of urgency starts when I look in the eyes of my own children. ...and if it has to be good enough for them, it needs to be good enough for EVERY child. #NYedchat
A1: For innovation to happen, we need leaders who encourage risk-taking and provide a culture for teachers to lead learning in beta. As @DrBillBrennan states, let's channel our INNERvation so we can INNOvate. #NYedchat
A1) The source of my urgency is grounded in the outcomes that await our students when they graduate from school. The disparity and disproportionality must change for our society to truly embrace diversity and flourish. #NYEDChat
A1: Change. In a nutshell, our ss now have more access & gateways to information and global thought than ever before. It is a disservice to limit the how and why. #NYEDChat
A1 at a policy level we need to redefine what a diploma means and what it means to be college ready. Skills and attribute development are better indicators of career and life readiness than an ACT score and certainly better than a Regents exam score. #nyedchat
Great to have you at #NYEDChat Jeremy. Breaking down the walls is what connected edus talk about and try to do. You're rt-we need this thought to be pervasive. #NYEDChat
A1: We have operated in an education system that values completion over mastery. As our economy moves towards highly intricate and skilled labor, we need to ensure our schools value the mastery of content and that the content reflects the extreme changes in the economy #NYedchat
Rethinking literacy is what the Literacy Leaders and I spoke about at my regional meeting today. Standardized testing was one of the hot topics on their minds in light of the opt out movement. #NYEDChat
A1: The 4th industrial revolution is dramatically changing the world of work for our kids. The teacher-centric model no longer prepares them for life and in 2018 is simply educational malpractice. #NYedchat
#NYEDChat Q1 Whether you believe there is an educational crisis in this country or that we could simply do better, what is the source of your URGENCY? What do you think is most in need of innovation in our schools? What needs to change? #NYEDChat
A1: Assess needs to change. More formative, more standards- based, more diff types of assess and given multiple times. Also stop thlearning completion or tissue grades. This is me falling off my soapbox!! #nyedchat
A1 We need to shift the conversation from teaching to learning. We are all learners, first. That's what schools should be all about, all the time. #nyedchat
A1: My urgency comes from needing a great understanding of the impact of social and emotional learning! This is a huge need. So much to learn to support all students! #NYedchat
A1 We need to shift the conversation from teaching to learning. We are all learners, first. That's what schools should be all about, all the time. #nyedchat
A1: Assess needs to change. More formative, more standards- based, more diff types of assess and given multiple times. Also stop thlearning completion or tissue grades. This is me falling off my soapbox!! #nyedchat
The source of my urgency is seeing Ss innovating and crafting their own learning and the passion that comes from that. When I see how the shift in instructional design impacts Ss, it makes me hopeful that we can take innovation from pockets to ALL Ss #nyedchat
A1 We need to shift the conversation from teaching to learning. We are all learners, first. That's what schools should be all about, all the time. #nyedchat
A2: I work with educators who are comfortable taking risks and exposing students to new learning experiences. This builds a culture where innovation grows as the questions become more important than the answers. #nyedchat
lots of innovation happening at #JerichoMS: standards-based grading,20% Time PD, student led Ed camp, mystery Skypes, Breakout EDU #nyedchaT all because teachers willing to take risks
#NYEDChat Q2 In what ways does a culture of innovation exist in your classroom and/or school? How have you re-designed the learning experience? #NYEDChat
A1) Urgency is tough in May, tbh. A big lever that would aid educational equity is likely reconsidering funding formulas with funding based on need versus home property values. Sufficient funds and proper allocation are needed to support kids with trauma and poverty. #NYEDChat
A 2 We’ve totally revised 5th grade reading curriculum. Choice at heart! Teachers have class libraries. Reading in Genre units with a range of books at students instructional level. Partners read different books, discuss, write in notebooks. #NYEDChat
A2 Working on developing project based learning for my students. Showing the technology skills they letting them choice topics to show their skills. #nyedchat
Quote form NYS Commissioner Elia shared on Long Island at #elanetwork this morn: "Push for educational equity remains the driving force behind our decision making and policies. #NYEDChat
A1: Give wide berth to the focus on #OER, its economic impact for students and its impact on pedagogical innovation for instructors. Leads to open pedagogy where students become creators rather than consumers of content. #NYEDChat
A1 - Teaching tolerance/empathy is at the top-for Ss especially. Best broached by leaders/educators w/ books that help us learn about others & their courage. We’re more alike than different! #NYEDChat@JoyWright91@gless54
A2: At our middle school, @WilletsRoadMS, we developed an Innovation Lab that promotes risk-taking, innovation, tinkering, making, while celebrating students' growth mindsets. We are starting to see teachers begin to use the space as well. #NYedchat
A2: We required all 7th graders to take an online Digital Citizenship class. There was no face to face instruction, but the learning has been incredible. Their final projects have been fun to see! #NYedchat
The urgency stems from surveys that show students are disengaged, anxious, lack purpose and engage in self -harm at crisis levels. Schools need to focus on the whole student to addrrss these challenges. #nyedchat
A2 Leaders have to communicate that taking creative ideas and implementing them in our classrooms and schools is accepted, encouraged and will be supported. #nyedchat
Emphasis on: educational malpractice. More emphasis on: we fully have the ability to design the learning (school) experience needed for today & for tomorrow. #NYEDChat
A1: The 4th industrial revolution is dramatically changing the world of work for our kids. The teacher-centric model no longer prepares them for life and in 2018 is simply educational malpractice. #NYedchat
#NYEDChat A2 We now use beyond the classroom walls experiences. We have used many primary source speakers to engage our students in their learning. These icons of history share their stories stories with our students.
A2~ Ss engaged in more leadership roles, settings, Ss interests at forefront of lesson design, input by all stakeholders is valued, use of multiple resources, print, digital , materials are relevant and applicable to 🌎 & student’s lives #nyedchat
#NYEDChat Q2 In what ways does a culture of innovation exist in your classroom and/or school? How have you re-designed the learning experience? #NYEDChat
A2: The Innovation Lab features flexible furniture, colorful stools, whiteboard painted walls, 3D printers, makerspace items, Legos, a green screen, chairs on wheels, Bloxels, Osmo, Keva blocks, iPads, Chromebooks, etc. #NYedchat
I’d like that one step further. We need to recognize that skill learning happens in a variety of settings, and relying on one (degree) form of determining ability is an injustice #NYEDChat
A2: We required all 7th graders to take an online Digital Citizenship class. There was no face to face instruction, but the learning has been incredible. Their final projects have been fun to see! #NYedchat
A2: Have focused on a mastery-based approach that emphasizes learning over scores or grades. Students redo or resubmit their assignments until mastery is reached. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat A1: My sense of urgency comes from trying to help Ss understand that making mistakes is ok. Ed. is often too much about filtering Ss rather than boosting them and teaching them to LEARN. They need to be comfortable collaborating and developing at their own pace.
#NYEDChat Q1 Whether you believe there is an educational crisis in this country or that we could simply do better, what is the source of your URGENCY? What do you think is most in need of innovation in our schools? What needs to change? #NYEDChat
Q2 #nyedchat Our District has redefined the learning experience 4 students through the utilization of a micro-credentials that help students develop financial literacy, life ready, and coding skills on their own and at their convenience. T’s are embracing digital badges as well
A2: We required all 7th graders to take an online Digital Citizenship class. There was no face to face instruction, but the learning has been incredible. Their final projects have been fun to see! #NYedchat
A2: Last year I realized my lectures did not meet the needs of my highly diverse learners. I shifted to self made videos where students work at their own pace and are purely graded on mastery. My class now revolves around reflection, revision and reassessment #NYedchat
A2: Starting convo on student centered learning and PBL. Some T ready to take risks! Updated infrastructure so there is reliable access. Supporting T risk taking in their own learning path. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat A2 We also have done “cultural conversations.” Recently our sociology class spoke with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 about the issue of gender inequality. Amazing to see the similarities that are nations face! Great experience for our Ss to share their findings.
#nyedchat A2: Haven't had the same classroom experience in consecutive years EVER. 20 years now. This year's addition: "Mathacognition." Helping Ss process their emotional associations and learning processes in mathematics. Best year of teaching yet.
#NYEDChat Q2 In what ways does a culture of innovation exist in your classroom and/or school? How have you re-designed the learning experience? #NYEDChat
Q2: We created Structured Struggle, a means of using short length, highly rigorous texts to help students build the meta cognitive moves strong readers use to decode difficult texts. Huge student growth when done well, though hard to do! #NYEDChat
A2: We are beginning to redesign our learning spaces from the library media space to individual classrooms and bringing student choice into our daily work. #nyedchat
Absolutely, Tom. As a result of certain forces, Most adults began to dramatically the way we learn, work, collaborate and communicate more than a decade ago. Schools have just begun to react to these forces. #NYedchat
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat A2 Also discussed/debated current issues with a class in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽. Focused on issues facing both countries. Ss learned to agree to disagree with their counterparts.
A2: Our student help desk has answered over 1000 tickets since being fully implemented last year as a credit bearing course. Life ready skills: customer service-listening, problem solving, service to others, collaboration. and happy Ts whose tech issues are resolved #nyedchat
#nyedchat A1: Two urgencies: teaching to learning paradigm shift and the second is teacher burnout
Fred from Richmond BC (West Coast, Vancouver area) Math Mentor teacher.
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
A2 I’m truly lucky to work in an environment in which we feel safe to take risks and learn together and from each other. We are currently focusing on increasing support for staff through choice, collaboration, and voice. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat Q2 In what ways does a culture of innovation exist in your classroom and/or school? How have you re-designed the learning experience? #NYEDChat
A2: Our student help desk has answered over 1000 tickets since being fully implemented last year as a credit bearing course. Life ready skills: customer service-listening, problem solving, service to others, collaboration. and happy Ts whose tech issues are resolved #nyedchat
A3 That is a tough question as a Leader you need to try and balance all of those. If I was to pick one as a Highest priority I would go with Learn as it is important to always grow as a leader. #nyedchat
A3: I believe in service leadership-my job is to empower those I serve to feel safe w opportunities to learn & grow in a place where they can be the best educators for our https://t.co/V0GhLf7G8z is hard to prioritize among these as one w/o the other doesn't work #NYEDChat
A3 We need to start by being reflective leaders in order to serve our stakeholders with the best intentions and empower our students to excel to the best of their abilities. #NYEDChat
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat#NYEDChat
A3: In an academic setting, perhaps EMPOWER is the most important for our engagement w/ students. When they are empowered, they claim agency over their learning and can become lifelong learners w/o the need for an instructor. #NYEDChat
A3: While they're all important, I want to continue to LEARN first. If leaders aren't learning, then we aren't modeling what we want for all stakeholders #NYEDChat
#nyedchat A3: Empower. When you build the right team.....that's all that's left to do: empower them. Let people find a purpose in the mission, empower them to contribute in the way that excites them. Everything follows from this, IMO.
#NYEDChat Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
A2: Understanding the need for Ss to be able to research, write, present/advocate, and produce, we have implemented grade level interdisciplinary projects K-HS. Sometimes old school is new school when leveraging tech to expand outside schoolhouse walls. #nyedchat
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
A3: We will be doing multiple “edcamp” faculty meetings because I want to empower the staff and then support with Learning Walks. Empowered teachers that believe they make a difference is the goal! #collectiveefficacy#NYedchat
A3: Serving the students is my ultimate priority. They are why we are all in this and it is always something that factors into every decision. I think if we let putting Ss first guide us, we are on the right path #nyedchat#lt8keys
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
In 2013, Gallup reported that student engagement plummets every year a child continues in school. By end of HS, only 44% are fully engaged. Gallup called it our “monumental, collective national failure.” Similar results seen in subsequent surveys,
@donald_gately#NyEdchat
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
A3 - Undoubedtly, it’s Learning. There is so much I don’t know. So many types of communities, cultures, school types, school policies. So many ways to make an impact. But to become an informed voice, I have to first shut up, listen, and learn. #nyedchat
Gallup also reported that 45% of students indicated that they plan to start their own business someday. Yet “a mere 5% have spent more than one hour in the last week working, interning, or exposed to a real business.” @donald_gately#NyEdchat
A2 I focus my PD workshops around creating and cultivating cultures of trust, engagement that are built on solid relationships. Re-designing literacy around this concept is key. #NYEDChat
Our librarian @lieberrian had done an AMAZING job of redesigning the library space for Makers, Readers, and Techsperts to thrive no matter the learning preference. She’s also authored several books on MakerSpace #NYEDChat
A1 We need to break away from the cookie cutter education and recognize that every student is an individual with their own story. We need to broaden our definition of success to mean more than a HS diploma and college acceptance #myurgency#NYEDChat
A3: Learning to the most important on the list! It should never be secondary to everything else we do. Learning and connecting with others as part of a PLN allows the others to be saturated in best practice. Servant leadership is next. #NYedchat
A3: Empower because it can include all the others. When you empower, you don’t have to delegate. You reflect so you know how to empower. Empowerment comes naturally so you don’t have to serve or engage. Your leadership serves so those you lead serve others. #NYEDChat
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
A3 Great question! They’re all important, it’s difficult to choose. The highest priority for me is to serve. Serve can capture all....a leader who serves may have to learn, reflect, adapt, etc...a leader who serves is able to determine the need and respond accordingly #NYEDChat
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat A3: Possibly EMPOWER, this allows innovation to spread quickly. I'd also choose it for the classroom & students to be freed to ask their own Qs & seek answers together if empowered.
A3 #nyedchat The best leaders utilize all of these tools and learn when to utilize them and apply them as needed. I am a proponent of lifelong learning and empowerment of staff to try new things.
Q3 The best LEADERS do the following on a consistent basis: Learn - Empower - Adapt - Delegate - Engage - Reflect - Serve. Which of these is the HIGHEST priority for you? Describe. #NYEDChat
A3: one is hard without the others. Empowering leads to enabling and engaging learners. Empower means to determine a destination(as a team) and allow others freedom on how to get there. Not the same as autonomy, which can mean anything goes. #nyedchat
Q2 #nyedchat Our District has redefined the learning experience 4 students through the utilization of a micro-credentials that help students develop financial literacy, life ready, and coding skills on their own and at their convenience. T’s are embracing digital badges as well
A3 I have come to see that the power to be REFLECTIVE about your practice and then change as a result is a powerful road to success. I have my students reflect also to learn from their mistakes and past experiences. #NYEDchat
A2: In the #NYSPTECH setting we combine soft skills, industry challenges, PBL and college courses to provide at risk students with an opportunity to reach their own individual potential #NYEDChat
Q4 Sheninger and Murray talk about “Redefining supervision: meaningful observations, evaluations, and walk-throughs” Describe successful models of supervision you’ve experienced. What works? What doesn’t? #NYEDChat
A3~ serve for me is top ... serve their needs by educating them, empowering them to continuously learn, inform, instruct, share for their own betterment and the betterment of others as well 🌎 #NYEDChat
Describe. #NYEDChat
A3: Education tends to move slow but out economy is shifting faster than ever. A leader that adapts to change is a leader that will help prepare our students for the future #NYedchat
A4. @DFISHERSDSU challenged us to ask Ss these Q’s they are an excellent way to change the supervision process #NYEDChat Thanks @woodard_julie for the beautiful graphic.
A4: At the core of successful supervision is establishing trust and relationships. Only then can any real work in growth and improvement happen for either person involved in the relationship. #nyedchat
Reflection is a lost art, in part because it is not taught. Reflection - both during and after a learning opportunity - is essential to developing wisdom. I think of @DeanJimRyan imploring us not to have answers at the ready, but to focus on what questions to ask. #nyedchat
A3: I struggle with empower as it implies that power needs to be given, by a leader, etc. I have thought both teaching in the classroom and leading a building, my role was to set the stage for students (or teachers) to realize their own power and opportunity! #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat Q4 Sheninger and Murray talk about “Redefining supervision: meaningful observations, evaluations, and walk-throughs” Describe successful models of supervision you’ve experienced. What works? What doesn’t? #NYEDChat
A4 All of those are important, but without timely and thoughtful feedback, it's meaningless. I once had a supervisor coteach a lesson with me! @kemnitzer3#nyedchat
A3 -NOT FAIR!!! They all matter. Learn b/c collective efficacy comes from social conversations that = growing for all. Voxer groups with colleagues like #PrincipalsInAction & Middle Level Leaders helps you do all the others. #NYEDChat@posickj@schug_dennis
If you're not part of tonight's #NYEDchat YET, there's still 30 minutes to left in the discussion. Join @donald_gately & @dmgately for a conversation all about what matters most in education. They are CRUSHING it!
#nyedchat A4: Lesson Study seems to have made the most impact of growth in my teaching. The opportunities to observe 'learning' while not in the moment, to co-plan for the purpose of furthering learning, debriefing from multiple perspectives, re-plan,
RE-search!

A4- whenever I meet with Ts I ask them what they would like feedback on. The conversation is all about their own reflection and how I can help them achieve w/ their Ss. #NYEDChat
A4: At the core of successful supervision is establishing trust and relationships. Only then can any real work in growth and improvement happen for either person involved in the relationship. #nyedchat
A4~ ongoing, specific feedback, collaboration that values all stakeholder’s input, modeling, supervision that fosters mutual respect&sharing, supervision that acknowledges the bumps in the toad and helps you work thru them and to your highest potential #NYEDChat
Q4 Sheninger and Murray talk about “Redefining supervision: meaningful observations, evaluations, and walk-throughs” Describe successful models of supervision you’ve experienced. What works? What doesn’t? #NYEDChat
A4 Literacy Walks are a way to informally observe and chat about noticings regarding Ss at work. It gives multiple people opportunity to collaborate on ideas to impact teaching/learning. #NYEDChat
A2: The hard part for school leaders is to create opportunities for innovative practices to be shared in a non-judgemental environment. When classrooms down the hall start openly sharing what works, equity improves. #nyedchat
A4: Relationships are they key to supervision. Learning Walks where then others can see highly effective instruction from their peers has been incredibly effective to support our staff. We shared our learning https://t.co/BSSikPvZok? #NYEDchat
A3: Leaders need to Empower teachers to step outside of the box and create rigorous and relevant learning experiences for students. Leaders need to Empower students to become innovative, inquisitive problem solvers. Leaders need to Empower parents to be our partners #NYEDChat
A4) As my friend @posickj always says, #GetOutOfYourOffice.
@tonyfrontier stated that an evaluation never made anyone improve their practice and he is right. Improvement is connected to ongoing feedback. #nyedchat
A3: Observations that have the goal of improving teacher practice rather than a gotcha type of relationship. It’s symbiotic. Teachers should be held accountable to student learning, and observer/coaches should be held accountable to teacher effectiveness. #NYEDChat
A4: What works is when the observation is more of a conversation than a one-sided exercise. The person under supervision should create a narrative of development, explaining and reflecting on their journey toward mastery. #NYEDChat
A4: I feel as if more often mini-observations or walkthroughs lead to deeper reflection and conversation than the one or two FORMAL observations. Formal observations become a show. I enjoy seeing authentic learning take place. The word "forma"l also instills fear. #NYedchat

#nyedchat notice in this model that the focus is on teaching and not on the learning. This paradigm is so traditional, it doesn't encourage growth. In Japan they take criticism well as they know it is on furthering learning (not correcting the teaching)
A4: Informal visits followed by honest and meaningful conversations about students and learning. Being genuine and focusing on working together. #nyedchat
A4) As my friend @posickj always says, #GetOutOfYourOffice.
@tonyfrontier stated that an evaluation never made anyone improve their practice and he is right. Improvement is connected to ongoing feedback. #nyedchat
A4- I was “observing” a SS lesson with @loriknudsen3 this year and at the end I jumped in with her and the Ss. And Lori and wrapped it up together. Awesome. #NYEDChat
A 4 works: Follow up conversations that happen within 24 hours. Observations with a focus help. Observer comes several times not once a year. Doesn’t work: check lists, no follow up, no meaningful conversations, no focus and observation is a few minutes.#NYEDChat
A4 cont'd: What works is building relationships and trust so that edus will take risks. As principal, being in classrooms daily is much more meaningful then a scheduled "formal observation"once a yr. #nyedchat
A4: Informal visits followed by honest and meaningful conversations about students and learning. Being genuine and focusing on working together. #nyedchat
A4: The idea that one formal observation, or the “dog and pony show” actually supports sustained growth in teaching and learning is laughable. Yet, one “formal” observation is standard in many places. We must do better. #NYedchat
Q5 Learning is at the core of everything we do as educators. How can we make sure learning transforms from “one-size-fits-all” to “personal” (for students and for adults)? #NYEDChat
A4: Seeing the “dog and pony show” is not effective. Frequent walkthroughs with immediate feedback and reflection are more effective. Teaching teachers to reflect is the best way to improve instruction #NYEDChat
#nyedchat I love having admin come in. I want them to focus on some students learning & to provide feedback on what they saw the constraints, AHAs, collaborating strengths of that group was during the activity/exploration.
A4- whenever I meet with Ts I ask them what they would like feedback on. The conversation is all about their own reflection and how I can help them achieve w/ their Ss. #NYEDChat
A5 break the mold of stand and deliver pedagogy. Very excited by the docs to allow Ss to work at their own pace and the teacher able to conference with individual students and groups #nYEDchat
A5: Establishing a culture of learning that offers personal choice for both students and educators is a key shift in how we think about educational models. It impacts everything from how we deliver instruction, classroom design, professional learning. #NYedchat

A5 Before tech, it was a seemingly impossible task. Now, we can leverage it so EVERY student gets a personalized experience- and I don't mean a program to teach for you #nyedchat
A4 - @andyrgreene has a flawless mini-visit system - create a rotation of content areas for each admin by week. Leaders visit classes in that dept. for a few mts. Don’t forget to leave a note. Admin meetings used to talk about visit and common notices #NYEDChat
That is why I cancelled the May Faculty Meeting two years in a row in lieu of teachers visiting two classrooms and then they email them what they liked about their class! It is creating trust and peer relationships! #NYEDchat
A5 we need to be relentless about finding solutions for students who struggle. If what we're doing is not working, try something else. Think outside the box #nyEDChat
A5- it’s not about manufacturing learning for students. It’s about creating opportunities for them to fail, persevere, and achieve. Only then do they actually learn. #NYEDChat
#nyedchat You made me think of "Fishbowl activities" modelling & debriefing that enable Ss to see 'experts'/experienced learners tackling a poem, a problem, an issue etc. and then discussing how to do it on their own.
A4 Literacy Walks are a way to informally observe and chat about noticings regarding Ss at work. It gives multiple people opportunity to collaborate on ideas to impact teaching/learning. #NYEDChat
A5: We need more online learning for teachers to shift PD to PL. Their lives are busy. Learning anytime and anywhere is a model to which we all need to subscribe. Ts and Ss also need CHOICE in their learning. Looking forward to leveraging @kid_OYO for this purpose. #NYedchat
A3 Gotcha does not work when building relationships. Observer-observee relationships must be guided by what needs to be accomplished for sake of Ss. #NYEDChat

A4: relationships! Always. building to a self reflective T. My best post obs have been w faculty that come in, open their weather beaten highly used reflection journal & we discuss what we saw in the lesson, look at strategies,(data is right there) & plan for future #NYEDChat
A4 Cross-pollinating my learning here a bit. Instructional leaders make classroom visits a top priority. Check out the #500c challenge via @eduleadership and the benefits of co-constructing goals via @PeterMDeWitt. #NYEDchat
A5 We can personalize learning for Ss and Ts by offering choice, not only in content but the how as well. Offer ways for Ts to learn independently(micro-credentials), w/i small learning cadres focused on a specific learning. #nyedchat
A5: When paired with intentionally designed instruction, #technology can allow for personalized learning experiences. It’s all about tech w purpose and getting to know your students and their needs #nyedchat
A5: Tech can help personalize learning, but what can never be replaced is the personalized relationship built between the student and the instructor. Students rate professors who are caring and respectful as practitioners of effective pedagogy. #NYedchat

A5~ Ts&Ss need voice, choice in learning environments and continuous access to a variety of materials that support & engage and deepen their learning #NYEDChat
A5: Help teachersmove from@the sage on the stage to the guide on the side. Dive deep and really learn about students. Let them explore and learn through what is meaningful and relevant to them #NYEDChat
A5: Choice, both for edus and Ss, is a must. If we differentiate for Ss, why not for edus? Providing opportunities, but showing edus the possibilities of Twitter, @voxer and the power of being a connected edu. Edus must take their learning into their own hands #nyedchat
#nyedchat A5: Paradigm shift needed. We enable students to learn; we don't teach curriculum. I once believed there was more diversity in my small 'modified' class than a large 'regular' class...until I did the math & realized I was teaching, not seeing the Ss & their diversity

Get them involved! Make them feel valued and give them opportunities to take leadership roles within the school. Involve them in the decision making process and give them a voice. Make school a positive environment for the parents too!
A5 Learning can be transformed from T-directed environments to S-centered ones if we believe that this is a call to action to impact teaching and learning for the betterment of 21st C learners. #NYEDChat
A4 - Also love #marshallmemo author - Kim Marshall and his book on Teacher Supervision and Evaluation. Practical tips on using a realistic approach to get a pulse on classroom practices @Nedatthegrove@josuefalaise#NYEDChat
A5 Take the pulse of your class and Ss all the time. Tailor your instruction to what they need, and adjust. Provide info in multiple modalities and make class time count. #NYEDchat

I intend to revisit those areas of growth that still need more work in my 21st-century practice: more writing, better relationships, focus on learning / improvement... #nyedchat (there... I said it!)
A5 having over 200 digital micro-credentials for our Ts to engage in learning, that is aligned to district goals(T created), gives them time to learn on their time schedule. Providing evidence of learning to earn the badge gives credibility to their work. #nyedchat
A5 Allow educators to choose the way they want to learn. May it be through Twitter Chats, Voxer Book Studies, Online Learning, attending conferences, blogs, trainings. #nyedchat
#nyedchat Continuing to look at how we "do" school is key to furthering our innovative practice - we must consider that the world is changing at a faster pace than we can measure & our students do not learn the way we did. Let's continue the conversation @EdCampLI
#nyedchat A5: Be open to how Ss demonstrate learning. WHAT needs to be learned can be the same for everyone. But the form of communicating that learning can't be limited to the T's comfort/familiarity. Don't place YOUR limits on your Ss!

Reflaction: Build trust and relationships. This is the only way an entire school community will reach its potential. We need to support risk-taking and the power of failing forward. Without trust, you have nothing. #NYedchat

To make this transformation, we need to keep our pedagogy current and show the Ss how what they are learning in relevant in today's fast changing world. #NYEDChat
A5: a lot of people say choice, yet there needs to be a purpose, a destination, a goal. To offer wide open choice does not sustain growth, and system or classroom coherence is not achieved. #nyedchat
#nyedchat One of our difficulties is that our cultures become so engrained that, without reflection/discussion, we can't see. Ex: Full moon lunacy believed by teachers, nurses, police in N. America while in Sri Lanka it is a time of meditation/reflection & not chaos
Awesome. I don't know that I personally need a home visit as a parent when I feel there are other ways to stay connected to the teacher. But different families benefit from different approaches. #nyedchat

This summer I want to create a blended learning plan for the year, turning over more control of the learning to Ss. Ordered class headphones to start the momentum #NYEDchat
Wow -- YES. I've wondered that out loud too. (At last out loud on Twitter.) Why on earth are students shipped away when it comes time for teachers to learn? #nyedchat@pernilleripp
so grateful to @cvarsalona and the #NYEDCHat moderating team for support and for always leading the way. Pushing our thinking and helping us connect! #PLN
