A1: What I love about formative assessment is how risk-free it is; Ss can explore where they are in their learning without the risk of failing a course while trying. #formativechat
A1 – Helps me build relationships and promote #growthmindset with the Ss. More apart of the learning process rather than holder of knowledge and giver of grade. More engaging and empowering. #formativechat

A1 the variety of ways to assess students. I grew up on paper and pen tests but now it’s all anecdotes, visible thinking routines, video logs, student conferences, reflection journals, and a few written output here and there #formativechat
A1: I love the student reactions to formative assessment. They feed off the immediate feedback piece. Whether it’s praise or constructive correction, students love to know if they are on the right track. It keeps them engaged and encouraged to put in 100% effort #formativechat
That was so fast and fun! Thank you, everyone, for joining us in the conversations about #curiosity. Our next #rethink_learning chat is in 3 WEEKs on March 12th same time. The topic will be Relationships.
A1: I love when FA gets Ss to engage with their learning rather than their grade. In writing, they have begun to talk w/me on how to improve their claims, support, or analysis. On a recent practice test, they noted what type of reading comp questions they missed #formativechat
Definitely, we need these so we can learn abt each student and be able to provide what they need, guide them and provide resources as well #formativechat
A1) Formative assessment allows teachers to gear their teaching to what students have not understood, so there are less holes in the student's learning. #formativechat#GEN2108
This is something I love about formative assessment too! It's all about communicating with studetns about what matters most...their own learning!
#formativechat
A1 using it to inform instruction, change the course of the lesson midway and not at the end of the day. It being a crucial part of how your unit progresses. #formativechat
A1: I love all the beautiful and creative ways Ss think and share their learning, especially when there’s little risk involved; I love the promise of second chances & the idea that with persistence we can do more #formativechat

A1 Ss stress over big test grade, they see their score but do they really learn the right answer. FA allows the T to assure they are learning the right answer #whitmanwtps#formativechat
And we all know the effects real communication has on our students and the community we build. It’s amazing that assessment actually fits into that process, isn’t it? #formativechat
agreed, one of my favorite parts of the changes I have made, using stations, is I have more time for those indiv conversations and opps for FA in many ways #formativechat

Absolutely - teachers have the opportunity to reflect on and remove barriers to student learning, encourage critical thought, metacognition & support all students #formativechat
A2: Last year, Ss were fearful of every assessment being worth “points” that they would take a long time trying to finish with perfection. This yr, I went over what FA was before starting. Big difference. #formativechat
A2 the challenge is ensuring you target students with different learning styles but still meeting the purpose and objective. The opportunity is to look for apps or strategies to meet that idea in mind. #formativechat
A2: Back to flexibility, Ts can plan FA along the path of learning their Ss take-assess and reexamine results, reflect, process feedback and re-try! #formativechat
Yes. Project-based learning is great for that. The FAs are embedded in the hyperdoc or task and Ss don’t realize the assessment is there. #formativechat
A2: One of my greatest challenges is refining how our activities connect to the formative and then connecting students back to key learning points. #formativechat
A2 Challenges are where the growth is! Every new class, every new students is unique. If we are not growing our craft and our relationships we should just record day 1 and repeat everydat from there. #formativechat
A2: It's a great way to model for our Ss that failure is a part of the learning process and that it's okay to not get it right the first time as long as you continue to work towards the "right" answer #formativechat
A2 Challenges make you re-think the process & in the long run make you stronger FAs can be a challenge but keeping the process intentional & learning as you go will make Ts & Ss stronger #formativechat
It's worth it in the long run the students should be more responsible for their learning and tools like @goformative have certainly change the game. The feedback has become more effective and timely. #formativechat
A2: I’m working to consistently conference with my students. Time is always a concern. My goal was to leave less written feedback on submitted papers and offset that with conversations, but I can’t make it to everyone in a short time period. It’s a process!
#formativechat
A2 sometimes we think we know the best methods, something will work, but it fails, totally okay because there is still learning involved #formativechat
A2 Challenges give us the opportunity to really think through what we are trying to accomplish. When something is difficult, I spend more time trying to figure it out. Challenges help us come up with solutions. #formativechat
A2: Back to flexibility, Ts can plan FA along the path of learning their Ss take-assess and reexamine results, reflect, process feedback and re-try! #formativechat
A2: the challenge is using the data from formative assessment to drive and often times modify your instruction. It presents an opportunity to reflect on your teaching, and then requires flexibility in “the plan” to keep student achievement at the forefront. #formativechat
A2: Formative assessments give an honest daily picture of whether students are learning. It can be challenging to look at minimal mastery after rough lessons but they are indications that changes need to be made to the delivery of content or learning model #formativechat
The challenges of working with students to assess learning constantly is mostly the time. I am currently helping in a classroom, and I spend all day assessing students work and helping them to correct their mistakes. #formativechat#GEN2108
And FA in Ss responses to our methods allows us to modify our instruction, just like FA allows Ss to change/refine their learning process #formativechat

A2 when I was starting as a PYP teacher I stuck to mind maos and concept maps because that’s all I knew. But through mentoring I saw how formative assessments can be as simple as asking questions or the SS themselves asking questions. #formativechat
A2 Pressure of ‘getting marks in’, but have done a better job of putting Ss first instead of marks while still meeting ‘gradebook’ requirements.Better job of tailoring class for student needs rather than just ‘cover’ content. Need to work on my #growthmindset too #formativechat
A1: I love all the beautiful and creative ways Ss think and share their learning, especially when there’s little risk involved; I love the promise of second chances & the idea that with persistence we can do more #formativechat
A2: Learning is a process not just for our Ss but for ourselves. Challenges are part of that. It will make the end product more meaningful. It also teaches us to always keep working to improve and not just be content. #formativechat
it can be a challenge to manage, fortunately there are so many options for quick assessments with #edtech and also can record our thoughts with tools as well #formativechat
A2: It is essential that students understand how the formative assessment connects to the learning. Too often they get the answer right or wrong and think they are done! #formativechat
I like the idea of increasing conversations. Having a high school or college student in the room could help add time or trying a flip classroom set up. #formativechat#GEN2108
Absolutely love doing #pbl and really liked trying #hyperdocs this year, led to more personalized and authentic experiences, creativity and risk taking too #formativechat
Yes! I have implemented jus ta few this year that have allowed me the freedoom to have asymetric dialogue while still having full class! It has been great for the students and me! #formativechat#edtech

A2: Personalizing tasks while focusing on overarching learning goals can be challenging when teachers work in silos but easier when we collaborate and include student voice #formativechat
I just did a game board based hyperdoc to introduce Shakespeare and found it very engaging for Ss and I could assess quickly what they understood about tone, diction, and characterization without saying any of those words. #formativechat
Absolutely love doing #pbl and really liked trying #hyperdocs this year, led to more personalized and authentic experiences, creativity and risk taking too #formativechat
The gradebook is a challenge. Many school districts like to have extensive data on every student. The data is important in developing plans for more growth, however can be challenging for teachers. #formativechat#GEN2108
True! It's important to make a habit of celebrating successes that we have and that our students have. That way we can build off of growth #formativechat
A3: I enjoy seeing teachers get creative with FA, they design with the learner, the learning and the goals to be mastered from the get go, in mind and use many forms of FA! Love so many! 😉#formativechat
there is always so much being shared in the Facebook community, I just wish I had more time to explore and to use everything in class :) #formativechat
We often looked at frequently missed questions and then I have the students "earn" the questions back by sharing where the questions connect to our activities. #formativechat
A3 I enjoy have Ss model for FAs I like to see their thinking I also like using FAs that I can link and use more than once to have Ss see growth #formativechat
This is such a great chart! I can see it being used for goal setting in the real world, research in ELA, and for so many other purposes. It has a simple concept that many students need a guide to understand. #formativechat#GEN2108
Hmm, it's sounds like you are doing a great job! Maybe consider using tech for audio conversations with students where they can participate asynchronously?
#voxer or something similar might work #formativechat
A3: As a blended learning teacher embedding questions in my videos using @edpuzzle is very useful. But my favorite formative assessment is having an individual discussion with a student. By removing lectures from my class I can now talk to every student every day #formativechat
It is great to have students correcting their mistakes! This creates an understanding without holes, so that students have a strong base of knowledge for the future. #formativechat#GEN2108

A3 - one huge game changer for me is the infusion of mini-whiteboards in my #math class Ss take more risks using these and easy to hold up and/or sit beside and interact with #formativechat
There are so many really great options, depends on your purpose, do you need something quick, do you want Ss to create and have options, love that there are so many #formativechat
