Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
5th grade teacher. Maize.
I love Mondays because it is the first day of the week. What you do and how you interact with students will set the tone for the whole week. #ksedchat
Hi! Cassie Banka here. I teach Algebra I, Intro to Engineering Design, and Civil Engineering and Architecture at Goddard Highschool. I celebrate Mondays because it's the start of will be a fabulous week ❤️ #ksedchat
Another great night for #ksedchat I #celebrateMonday today because I got to go to observe another teacher of HS #FutureTeachers and get some AWESOME ideas! Jill from Cheney...7-8 SocStud & HS Teaching and Training Pathway
Sharon Norden from Derby, KS. I #CelebrateMonday because my daughter is graduating soon and it’s nothing but college prep these days. Exciting times. 😁#ksedchat
Today I celebrated because a staff member who travels to different schools around the district asked if we could sit and chat sometime to share ideas. #ksedchat
A1: students talking to each other, teachers talking and working among students , questioning and discovering through learning and conversations #ksedchat
A1: it looks, sounds, and feels like organized chaos. It's all hands on deck, it's buzzing with excitement, and FEELS AWESOME. it's when you get the teacher tingles. #ksedchat
A1: Kids asking questions! Kids researching! Kids creating! Kids moving! Kids building! Kids excited to share discovery! I could go on and on! #ksedchat
A1) Student engagement looks like students who are involved in a lesson or activity. Actively speaking, participating and learning from others or the concept. #ksedchat
A1 #ksedchat ss engagement is all ss listening, trying, communicating, or struggling with material. Could be very noisy or very quiet, Ss led or teacher directed.
#ksedchat#setthestagetoengage In my classroom, student engagement is noisy. We smile and giggle. We sing and dance excessively. We get feedback from one another. Sometimes we forget that we're learning because it feels like play.
A1. My idea of engagement is all Ss focused on something in their own way. This can look chaotic at times and peaceful at others! Engagement is different for different activities! #ksedchat
A1: Sounds like asking questions for more info, buzzing with excitement. Looks bright-eyed, laser focused. Feels exciting, refreshing, and on FIRE! #ksedchat
A1: The students are able to work independently from the teacher. Teacher is facilitating the learning, aiding, asking the RIGHT QUESTIONS to keep them digging deeper! #ksedchat
A1) Student engagement DOESNT always have to be students paying attention to a teacher. Students should be engaged and fully be excited and involved in the learning. #ksedchat
Sorry I'm late! I'm Melissa from Atchison. I teach 6-8 Soc Studies. I #CelebrateMonday bc it's the start of a busy week and so much can be done in 5 days! #ksedchat
A1: Engagement looks like students in control of their learning and thinking critically. It’s relevant without losing rigor. The fun has to be balanced with legit content! #ksedchat
A1: Ss excited and doing more of the talking and creating. As directed projects and learning.Teacher talking less and kids learning to ask questions and discover for themselves. #ksedchat
This is Brad from Atchison, Jennifer from DeSoto, Jamie from Silver Lake, and Angie from Olathe checking in from Wichita on @ktoy2018 meal.
We love you , Carmen and Kansas educators! #ksedchat
Excellent point! Depending on the activity the engagement WILL look different. Music participation is nothing like being involved in an Art activity. #ksedchat
Right! My Ss were super into a writing activity today because of the prompt we used and a different time engaged in a new project both look and sounded different! #ksedchat
#ksedchat a1: there’s a difference between compliance and engagement. Engagement is ACTIVE, question asking, analyzing, discussing, responding, synthesizing
A2. I get my energy from connecting and collaborating with others around me. I am extremely extrinsic and need people to bounce ideas off of! #ksedchat
A2: I love looking for new ways to create learning experiences. Finding a unique project, metaphor or example that leads to understanding. It's a challenge by I love having a class that is a little bit different than all the others. #ksedchat
A2: what energizes me is seeing the kids energized and excited about learning. I love it when they have the opportunity to create and be creative. #ksedchat#setthestagetoengage
A2 a really good discussion about current events especially when I can step out and let ss have the convo with each other. Having a good disagreement about history or geography. And Fridays. #ksedchat
A2: I am energized by seeing my students engaged in the lessons. When they are excited, I am excited. I love seeing them have fun! Learning should be fun. Coffee too, but that besides the point. #ksedchat
Q2: nothing energizes me more than when a student embarks on the math struggle and comes out VICTORIOUS! The sense of pride and accomplishment Ss have when that lightbulb clicks on is the BEST. I live for those moments (and yes, more teacher tingles 😂) #ksedchat
A2 A new lesson idea, reading up on interesting facts and/or stories that I could share w/ my Ss, a news article related to what we're learning in class. Any time I could bring something new to class I get energized #ksedchat
A2: My students energize me every single day. I cannot remember the last time I didn’t look forward to going to work in the morning. Watching my seniors making post-high school decisions and seeing them become young adults is both fascinating and rewarding. #ksedchat
A2: The excitement of a new project about to be pitched. I'm a TERRIBLE secret keeper and I have to force myself not to tell them all about it too soon. I always leave @ESSDACK energized and ready to go after a day of learning with other teachers. LOVE growing my PLN #ksedchat
A2 Every class has that Ss who gives energizes me, if I just let them; walks down the hallway between classes are a pick me up. Hallway collabs are amazing. #ksedchat#BHSela
A2: Also I am energized when the kids are energized about an activity! I can't wait to start #GeniusHour next week! They have been counting down the days! #ksedchat
A2: Engagement, creating w/ tech, Ss being in the driver's seat (and loving it!). But also the sweet stuff, like seeing them guide each other and helping. #ksedchat
A2 Every class has that Ss who energizes me, if I just let them; walks down the hallway between classes are a pick me up. Hallway collabs are amazing. #ksedchat#BHSela
A2: Also I am energized when the kids are energized about an activity! I can't wait to start #GeniusHour next week! They have been counting down the days! #ksedchat
A2 I enjoying trying to create ideas that are new and different! @thewarsnak always says no one will be as enthusiastic about your class as you are! #ksedchat
A2) when kids are excitedtoeabr. That energizes me; not kid and crazy because of pizza! ... excited for a lesson and to learn! #KnowledgeIsPower#ksedchat
A2: Today I was energized by a tough Student he was excited to come back and tell me about his world and the things he was proud he accomplished reminded me why my job is important #ksedchat
A2: I love seeing Ss excited and creating something they connect with!! I love it when they learn something new and they can't wait to share out! Love when they clap at the end of read aloud!! #ksedchat
A2) Not even joking- my co-workers. Even when they don’t agree with me, they always listen. And my online colleagues in the #Mtbos - what inspiration from those ambitious teachers! And of course, student connections are the best part of the job. #ksedchat
A3: Acknowledging them is important. I make it a point to ask them about their day, life, etc. I let them know that I care about them. I try to find something that interests, and tie it into lessons. #ksedchat
A3. I try and create a safe and loving environment for Ss that makes them want to come to school. I also try to make as much time as possible for interesting projects. #ksedchat
A3: As always, starts w/ relationships! That's the first thing that will make them eager! But you always want your students asking for more.. topics must be entertaining/relatable to them. #ksedchat
A3: I ask them what they want to learn, I decorate the room, and make learning fun. This week we’re making a donut shop and exploring the driving question: why do donuts bring joy to so many people? #ksedchat
A3: I would love to be able to say "I created an eagerness" but I am not there..yet. Still, I try to teach so they see I care about them and I genuinely appreciate their effort and applaud their accomplishments. #ksedchat
A3: #ksedchat similar to our voxer thread...its all about RELATIONSHIPS kids will do anything for a teacher who is invested in them and cares. They want to be at school when they are thirsty to learn.....
A3 develop relationships with kids. Get to know them, give good feedback. Lots of high fives, pats on the back and encouragement. When ss tell me they will be gone the running joke is "who is in charge of saving __________ a cup cake ?" #ksedchat
A3) I try to build in activities kids are interested in, based on what THEY do at home. (Horse back riding writing, soccer math) But you have to have a relationship with your Ss to know how to reach them and WHY concepts are relevant to them! #ksedchat
A3 Make your class feel like a family. Relationships between kids matters the most. I always hoped they looked back on 6th grade as a special year. #ksedchat
A3: We get them curious by dressing up, decorating a theme, mystery boxes, @breakoutEDU, gamification or any kind of #tlap hook to spark interest!! #ksedchat
A3: It’s all about relationships! Know your students and let them know you care. And don’t stop caring when they move on to another class. One of my former students bagged my groceries on Sunday and I still asked about his grades, his girlfriend, and his family. #ksedchat
Q4: My favorite quote is "Provide an uncommon experience for your students and they will reward you with an uncommon effort and attitude." @burgessdave -What is an uncommon experience you have given to your Ss or would like to? #ksedchat
A3b: I agree that relationships are so vital!! Doing Morning Meetings and getting them feeling safe to share and collaborate with their class family!!#ksedchat
A4)I want to provide the experience that their teacher always believes that they can ALL learn math. Too many students have teachers that don't believe in ALL the students, and they don't do as well. #joboaler#growthmindset#ksedchat
A4) My engineering classes have been full of these experiences this year. From Automata box designs, to modeling yard art structures, to reverse engineering Nerf guns, it's been one fabulous ride this year and it will only get better! #ksedchat
Q4: My favorite quote is "Provide an uncommon experience for your students and they will reward you with an uncommon effort and attitude." @burgessdave -What is an uncommon experience you have given to your Ss or would like to? #ksedchat
#ksedchat a3
1st: engage yourself - if your not mentally there, no one else will be either.
2nd: ditch meaningless worksheets, focus on experience, create a need to know (let ss discover "why we need to know this")
A4: Paint Your Space, sexual assault prevention/self-defense training, Senior Breakfast, Senior Showcase, Senior Parade, Project Graduation, Senior class service projects, and graduation walkthroughs! #ksedchat
A4: Love the Middle East Wing Challenge by @BWWings that @coachschutte and I do each year.
https://t.co/FsCCNNN3lD
Student's have a lot of fun but they also go further in depth with current events than a lot of other projects. #ksedchat
A4) I have REALLY bad eye sight. I lined my Ss up & had them look through my glasses to see what it’s like to be hard of seeing. (Not everyone needs glasses, not everyone needs a wheelchair) My Ss showed great kindness for the next week! In First Grade, a week is huge!😆#ksedchat
#ksedchat#setthestagetoengage Many students this year commented that they liked that "no books were off limits" in my room. I let them read from my read aloud shelf if they wanted or take books home that they just had to finish. I don't make them read certain levels either.
Q4: My favorite quote is "Provide an uncommon experience for your students and they will reward you with an uncommon effort and attitude." @burgessdave -What is an uncommon experience you have given to your Ss or would like to? #ksedchat
A4: Developing our Kindness project! #theroadtokindness was a great engagement piece for my Ss and was theirs. They took ownership in their project because it had a purpose #ksedchat
A4: We learned about girls having to carry water in Africa. We read books, we researched, and the we felt a tiny bit of it as we TRIED to carry the water! #ksedchat
#ksedchat I am looking at some “blended learning”..different good teaching practices, some learning space changes, and some personalized learning options.
Q4: My favorite quote is "Provide an uncommon experience for your students and they will reward you with an uncommon effort and attitude." @burgessdave -What is an uncommon experience you have given to your Ss or would like to? #ksedchat
A4: On nice sunny days, I take the time to eat with my students on the patio. I usually bring them dessert (brownies). It gives me a chance to know my students. They look forward to this time with me. #ksedchat
A4: Our WILD club at my school is a unique experience for our students! It’s all about getting messy and dirty and connecting with nature! Right now we are planning our first ever overnight camp out! 🏕(Yes I’m equally terrified and excited!) #ksedchat
A5) first time I am trying this. For the end of the year mybstudents are trying to persuade parents and staff to invest in a “Buddy Bench” for recess, so no one will feel lonely at recess. Donations started today. We’ll see how it goes! 🤞#ksedchat
A4: ditching meaningless worksheets even when they were popular, starting meaningful senior projects that still carry weight today, movements created, STEM in Eng, ownership of leaning, cross-curricular lessons and so on... #ksedchat
A5: After testing is over, we read a book together, and then watch the movie. This year, we are doing How to Eat Fried Worms. The kids are excited. I also try to incorporate fun science experiments that I wasn't able to do earlier in the year. #ksedchat
A1: I spent 20 minutes on a sky ride at the zoo with a four year old today. It was “boring” by normal standards. She made no fewer than 25 “I wonder” statements. Engagement isn’t flashy. It’s placing kids in a position to capitalize on their innate curiosity. #ksedchat
#ksedchat#setthestagetoengage I don't usually give extrinsic rewards, but at the end of the year I bust out the candy jar. Also, I bring my ukulele and we jam.
A5: I have Ss write letters to their future selves that I will give back to them when they are seniors. I started it bc one of my former Ss died by suicide & I wished she would have had something encouraging to read from when she was so full of hope as a 6th grader. #ksedchat
A5: I think the end of the year is the perfect time to try something a little different! My 4th graders are going to create a new recess game for 1st graders next week! I can't wait for the connections and learning that will take place! #ksedchat
Q5: I thought it worked well to ask Ss to teach the class. This was their final. They could pick one concept they learned and teach it to the class. It was my fav way to reflect and see what inspired Ss. It was also a great summative. #ksedchat
A4: Ss loved feeling like real Doctors with text feature surgery. They loved the pollution solution activities with Freddy the Fish. Things that are surprising and fun!! I also love just chatting with them using @Flipgrid They love to connect to other Ss or classmates. #ksedchat
A3: While I want to say #PBL, the answer is actually even more simple. RELATIONSHIPS! When the class culture is one where you know you are loved, successful, and that you belong you can’t wait to come back the next day! #ksedchat
