Hi there, Lindsey from @commemorate2019 here--excited to co-host tonight’s chat! Fave thing about U.S. history is diverse perspectives #2019Schools#novaedchat
A1 I think all our curriculum areas include these themes - learning to embrace our diversity and take advantages of the opportunities in front of us is a skill for all students (and teachers) #NoVAedchat#2019Schools
A1 It’s been awesome for me to see how #AE2019 themes are implemented across disciplines. Ts connect the themes to coding, primary sources, storytelling, giving drives, art projects, and more. #2019Schools#NoVaedchat

A1 I love seeing more of this in classrooms- especially diverse points of view. I think it ties in well with #softskills that are at the front of many districts’ plans. #novaedchat

A1: I think any successful classroom has to explore democracy in order to run well. I think the most successful teachers talk openly about democratic practices with their students to engage them in learning together. #novaedchat
I think this is a common misconception. Being able to examine sources, make decisions and learn from our past is necessary for our future success #novaedchat
Q2: Civic Engagement is a hot topic right now in schools and for government officials. How is your learning environment emphasizing democracy/civic engagement? #2019Schools#NoVAedChat
Do you think we name these as democratic practices? I'm learning more about the importance of students naming skills to facilitate transfer through the work of @RonRitchhart#NoVAedchat
#novaedchat A1. The themes have loads of potential for exploring change over time. They are also inroads to conceptual teaching which can ask students to develop their world view
hmmmm... that's an interesting point. I can see how naming it would make it more poignant for the students, but I think that's probably not happening too much
A2: I'm proud of this one! As an IB school, we require all 8th graders to work with a mentor teacher on a community service project. It's a huge undertaking, but our kids are doing really meaningful things to serve their community. #novaedchat
This has been a big week for MYP projects! @scholarcation and @Sa_rah_Olson were sharing about their students sharing these projects this week. It was so cool to hear about kids chasing their passions! #NoVAedchat
#novaedchat The social studies departments are outstanding at getting students to be registered voters. Teachers who use visible thinking routines are channeling John Adams who recognized the need of an intelligent citizenry
A2 I also think it’s super important for Ss to know what makes a good source, a biased source and a fake source when they develop their own thinking and participate in democracy. #novaedchat
A3 We have been talking about the story being told by the dominant culture - Why not help our students challenge and change this? Learning the REAL history behind our history and telling this story in the contest? #NoVAedchat
YES--#AE2019 is all about telling untold stories, including our students. Our individual stories define our national collective history. That's why we're so excited about this contest #2019Schools#NoVaedchat
A3 I wonder how we might tap into students' creativity with a challenge like this? So many of us are creating and challenging students... can we help them create as well? Utilize a variety of tools and processes to get feedback and improve our thinking? #NoVAedchat
Open through March 15th! The contest is really wonderful but the video prompts are great for student reflections on their own stories, and honest feelings about America's complicated relationship with democracy and diversity. #2019Schools#novaedchat
Something that I love about working at a diverse IB/MYP schools are the personal projects that allow student to dig deeper into the stories of their culture and share those stories with others. So powerful.
Q5: What lessons have you learned from creating a more inclusive learning environment, emphasizing student backgrounds and experiences? #2019Schools#NoVAedChat
Q5: What lessons have you learned from creating a more inclusive learning environment, emphasizing student backgrounds and experiences? #2019Schools#NoVAedChat
A5 I learned just how difficult it can be to integrate diverse stories when up against a massive curriculum, no matter my intentions at the beginning of the year. #2019Schools#novaedchat
A2: As a science teacher I think about civics differently, maybe. I’m intrigued by civic hacking and how we help students focus their talents and efforts for a better cause. #alplearn#NoVAedchat
