Join in the #HISDAdminChat conversation each Sunday night at 6pm CST as we discuss the challenges we face and the successes we celebrate while learning and leading as an HISD Administrator.
Samya Rogers AP at Holland MS and the big rock I plan to keep moving tomorrow is the rock of coaching my team of newbies in backwards planning. Beginning with the end in mind! #HISDAdminChat
Betsy Hancock, I’m the AP at the Elementary DAEP (EL DAEP). My big rock for tomorrow is to put on paper the decisions of our PBIS team as thus create policies and protocols. #HISDAdminChat
Kristina Woody. Dean at Tanglewood Middle School. My big rock this week is to announce our student court and get them trained in the restorative process. #HISDAdminChat
Hi!! Lauren here from @ELLevationED continuing my guest appearance here. Big rock tomorrow is working with several MS campuses in HISD to help support #ELLs on their campus. #HISDAdminChat
Hi everyone, this is Karina Lopez from Edison MS and the rock this week is collaboratively planning effective grade level assemblies this week. #hisdadminchat
A1: When I skip the tough stuff, I get throughly lost. It seems the 10 minutes it might have taken turn into several hours to clean up the mess I caused. #HISDAdminChat
A1: When you skip the tough stuff, you risk missing the opportunity to support people through the discomfort of growth and getting to the next level. #HISDAdminChat
Yes... someone told me when you procrastinate a task each day you do so the length of time that it takes to complete increases one hour! The ball just keeps getting bigger #HisdAdminChat
Depends on what it is... The first thought that comes into mind is tough conversations, silence is never silent, the more we delay the bigger the issue becomes, the more time we waste. #HisdAdminChat
I don’t know that it does wait for you. I think the idea that it may “go away” is what sometimes makes it easier (or more enticing) to skip the tough stuff. #HisdAdminChat
A2: Everyone makes mistakes. The true measure of your character is in how you proceed and use that moment, that lesson, for the benefit of as many parties as possible. #blessons#HISDAdminChat
A2-Keep trying and look at the challenge a different way. There can be multiple ways to solve a challenges.
Also, celebrate with them for them try to take that step forward. #HISDAdminChat
A2: First thing.. we should ask not tell the teacher.. provide that opportunity for reflection.. Seek first to understand the situation and then work side by side with the teacher to work through the misstep.
A3. Is anyone bleeding? Is anything broken? If not, let’s move on. Can’t cry over spilled milk! We are granted a new grace each day. We can try again tomorrow! #HisdAdminChat#letlovelead💜
A1: I try to find out WHY they are stuck and hear their thought process out. Then I remind them of the successes they have had before and that we can move forward together. #HISDAdminChat
A2)When a T is stuck on misstep it’s time 4 coaching only. Other times consultation can apply but “being stuck” is different. “What outcome were u seeking? How do u respond when a S is stuck on a mistake? Is this a big thing or small thing?” Help them define it #HISDAdminChat
A2: back up and let’s look at it differently. Sometimes we have to push out teachers to just take off running and run through it. Dwelling on it will stifle forward progress! #HISDAdminChat

A2: I’m not 100%sure I can think of a time this has happened to me. But in general, I try ti focus/refocus the conversation to center around students. What can we plan/do to repsond to student needs /misunderstanding? #ItsNotAboutYou#HisdAdminChat
And remind them not to harbor on the misstep. We all make mistakes. We grow & learn from them. The question is, “Will you choose to grow from it?” #HisdAdminChat

This is hard for me because my personality type is detail oriented... I also read into things, but ultimately I listen to advice and focus on the big picture! #HISDAdminChat
A3. Own the lesser moments and move on. It's empowering to admit a lesson learned. It also helps to work in a culture that supports this! HisdAdminChat
A3: I do my best to remain calm, in spite of what is happening around me, and quietly handle what is at hand. If I need to, I apologize to any I may have embarrased or hurt, and do what is needed to make amends and ensure the best for my students. #HISDAdminChat
Own it. Correct it. Don’t repeat it. Be vulnerable and show your growth process. This is the hardest part. We all make mistakes. How we respond shows our character and shapes our organization. #HISDAdminChat
A3: Own up to them. Reflect and process through them. Be vulnerable and seek to restore relationships if needed. Figure out how to improve and then fly forward. #HISDAdminChat
A3: The lesser moments don't get that much of my energy. What you focus on grows so I try my best to put most of the energy on the greater moments and use the lesser as catalysts for positive improvements #HISDAdminChat
A3: I think this is a tough one.. I know I can get stuck myself on my lesser moments but we do have to look at big picture and remind ourselves we are doing our best! And call up our PrinciPALS so they can help put things in perspective for us 😊#HisdAdminChat

A3: Display your lesser moments as an opportunity of learning with humility. We are all humans. This often times lets people focus less on those moments. #HISDAdminChat
There are lots! I highly recommend Rising Strong. Her newest is Braving the Wilderness. We should do a book study with #HISDAdminChat when her next one Dare To Lead comes out!
