If coding and computing are areas that you find challenging then tonight's #TwinklTeach#caschat special will be just what you need! Join in the chat starting in a couple of mins :D ^Kat
Weâll be using Q1, A1, Q2, A2 (question 1/answer 1) format. Please respond to each question like: A1, A2, etc. and donât forget to include both hashtags: #TwinklTeach#caschat
#caschat Evening all. After attending Skycademy & spending months preparing for a balloon launch I messed up at the last minute & used the wrong batteries. Payload fell to earth & stopped transmitting - luckily there was a 2nd transmitter on it!
ha! Mine was the same. My only detection picked up in secondary school - bunking off for the day to queue for a ticket for Sheffield United vs Manchester United in the FA Cup in 1990. Who should be on the local news coming out of the ticket office .... #caschat
At year 7 residential they put me on a bike too big for me - I fell off in front of all the year 7's and nearly killed one of them in the process #caschat
A1: Children need to know that failing is ok, nothing has to be perfect or work first time. Too many children worried about getting it 'wrong' #caschat#TwinklTeach
A1 the resilience from having a failure will be so useful across all other areas of learning #TwinklTeach#caschat in computing thingd change so fast that always having to learn new ways
A1 Need to learn that no-one gets it right 1st time. Look at versions of software! Perfection is always just out of reach but still can be sought. #caschat
Absolutely hit the nail on the head here Kelvin. 'Getting it right' is not the be all and end all- it is path taken on the way- and a solution that could be unexpected isn't always the 'wrong' one #TwinklTeach#caschat
In my previous career I snuck out of the office on a "toilet break" and ran to get tickets to a Steven Gerrard DVD signing for my son. When I got back to the building the lift broke down with me in it and I had to explain why I was in there in the first place #caschat
A1 It is important in HE as well. I think it is partly about risk taking and knowing it is ok to try something new - "Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly". John F. Kennedy #caschat

A1 #caschat ss need to experience a certain degree of failure in order to take pride in their attempts, their resilience and successes. iteration reinforces learning. In computing this encourages more independent thinking and originality
Indeed , well said Jim. We learn far more from the things we don't get right first time- an ongoing challenge for teachers to get across to their students #TwinklTeach#caschat
A1 In my computing I often say to my classes that I don't know the answers but we are going to learn and fail together and that's often the best way. #caschat
A1. Its all part of the learning process - if they expect to do things correctly first time everytime they will never learn resiliance. I'm pleased when I make a mistake live coding and the students pick up on it #caschat#alwaysADeliberateMistake
A1. Failure teaches kids to perservere & build risk-taking skills. Great lessons are learnt from failing and trying again and again. It builds great debugging skills too! #TwinklTeach#Caschat
A1. Nothing is delivered perfectly. Computing methodologies (and most things we design/create) are all based around failures and iterating and refining until it is right. Angry Birds came after Rovio failed with 51 games before it ... #caschat

I set a task calculate the area of a rectangular room once - then realise there are loads of ways that can be read :-) Flipped into an example of bad spec #TwinklTeach#caschat
A1. Also I think it's good that students learn that some of the best ideas and projects have come about from lots of attempts - where would we be if the codebreakers had given up after the first attempt #caschat
Q2. How do you create an environment where itâs OK for students to FAIL? How do you encourage your students to persevere and learn from their mistakes?
#TwinklTeach#caschat
How can we overcome the 'panic' mode for those students who want to get the answer right- are there any particular activities that are particularly effective at resilience builidng? #TwinklTeach#caschat
Absolutely hit the nail on the head here Kelvin. 'Getting it right' is not the be all and end all- it is path taken on the way- and a solution that could be unexpected isn't always the 'wrong' one #TwinklTeach#caschat
A1 #caschat I agree - if pupils are only recognised for getting things right they may not take risks or push themselves (hello from Sheffield! Biggest fail missing caschat too often ;)
A2: By making mistakes myself (intentionally and unintentionally). Asking children to find out for themselves before jumping in and helping. #caschat#TwinklTeach
#TwinklTeach#caschat A2: Purposefully (or not) i make mistakes all the time. I make no effort to cover them up. Show the class how to fix them and move on.
A2 Set tasks that have levels of success so stds can strive/achieve, strive/achieve. No one single 'right' answer. Praise success & challenge to do next level. #caschat
#TwinklTeach#caschat A2 the environment one is a tricky question. Building up to a big problem so the pit isn't too big to get out of. Every time the learning pit gets deeper the rope to get out isn't too far away.
I believe it's good to let our students know when we make mistakes - makes us look human and lets our students know that it's OK to make mistakes as long as we learn from them! #TwinklTeach#caschat
Q2. How do you create an environment where itâs OK for students to FAIL? How do you encourage your students to persevere and learn from their mistakes?
#TwinklTeach#caschat
A2: All about the classroom ethos, I have always been honest with making mistakes or failing in front of my students if there is a mistake in my coding then I would point it out and say look at that, no emotions no panic just letâs make it better #caschat#TwinklTeach
A2 #caschat by encouraging them not to be afiad to try, tlling them how amazing their brains are, how adaptable, hoe they learn from mistakes, equpping them with tools to build resilience and nor be disheartened
A2. I share about mistakes I've made. Also share success stories of people who failed but perservered, like Jack Ma of Alibaba. I assure them that they will always have a safe space. #caschat#TwinklTeach
A2. I would hope that the feel in my classroom is that its ok to try and fail. The support that students give to each other is great (and me making regular mistakes ("Miss - where is your semi-colon) is something that we laugh off and try again with) #caschat

I use ask a partner, ask a neighbour, right click mouse, dont ask me. I have ' magic mouse' and 'cool keyboards' which they can be awarded the use of also 'eagle eye' debugging glasses #caschat A2
Ask them how many games on their Xbox/PS4 have been "patched" - ask them why? Look at the release notes. Bug fixed? Really? https://t.co/MSYncLLGdd#caschat

Q2. How do you create an environment where itâs OK for students to FAIL? How do you encourage your students to persevere and learn from their mistakes?
#TwinklTeach#caschat
I like the idea of safe space is important for programming - the machine is not going to go bang! If it does by programming it the machine shouldn't have allowed it.
#TwinklTeach#caschat
A2. If someone makes a mistake sometime I share their screen with the class so we can work out together how to solve it. The more often you do this, the more it becomes normal and therefore no embarrassment for the student #TwinklTeach#caschat
A2 teaching children to feedback effectively together and to collaborate to overcome failure. Most things were not invented by a solo person- but by a whole TEAM #TwinklTeach#caschat
A2 fail publicly, live code and show them it's ok to make mistakes. Praise students for making mistakes, actively reflecting and learning from mistakes #caschat
A2 tell them about Google / X and being paid bonuses when they fail in concepts/projects. Set an environment that promotes effort and risk taking. #caschat

A1 Comp is different to all other subjs, we spend most of our time failing. As soon as we type a character it is going to fail, we have to finish a syntactically correct statement for it to work. They will spend a greater % of a lesson failing-this is diff to most subjs #caschat

#TwinklTeach#caschat I've not tried but i'm not sure if i would. It's a tricky one with confidence in my lessons as there is a vast difference between the able and very stuck! The very stuck would feel even worse!
A3 I donât have a cape or super-power âŚso I make mistakes/fail. If teachers are afraid to fail then we will pass that on to stds. Recognising a fail, asking for help (from stds!) & moving on is good role modelling. #TwinklTeach#caschat
A3 I guess it has to come from top down. Success markers not built around traditional success. Ethos and mindset created with the school leadership possibility. #caschat
We always say âmistakes show we are learningâ and the children know what it means to persevere/be resilient as they are a part of our schoolâs âsuper learning powersâ! Also modelling deliberate mistakes for children to identify, to show that everyone makes mistakes! #Twinklteach
A3. I tell my classes if I am trying something new with them and often ask for their feedback. My year 10's call themselves my guinea pigs as when they spot an error or we don't like the layout of something I tell them I'll fix it before the year 9's do it. #caschat
A3 #caschat Let ss know we are all still learning and be happy to make (deliberate or not so) mistakes and ask for their help in solving. I will often ask Digital Leaders or ss who I know are able to explain a point an peer support rather than jump in myself
#TwinklTeach#caschat A3 The support when it all goes crashing down around you to say HELP! and you've got someone there to get you out. Then it doesn't matter how often you fail. Well you might have to buy more biscuits.
A3 be heavy with the praise and +be language, like you would with students. Give one specific point for improvement when observing. Celebrate and share your own failings, ask 4 help. Make them realise that it's not ok to hide mistakes and it's better to learn from them. #caschat
Thank you- traffic light system - like it :D #TwinklTeach#caschat ( although when highlighter pink=good and green=growth :S ) Green= Go in my book every time :D

A3:itâs about power structure within you school, for some schools itâs all about being âoutstanding/rightâ and pointing out mistakes and that equals power/controlđIn the (real) outstanding schools itâs about being equals and exploring together reaching out when mistakes are made
A3 tricky - fragile confidence can be easily damaged if tasks are too difficult - cognitive overload - same problem for teachers as well as learners #caschat
Having CPD and opportunities for teachers to have a go themselves- not always possible #TwinklTeach#caschat Are there ways for prim and sec to work together here?

#TwinklTeach#caschat A3 i taught merge sorts for the first time today and had a complete mental block on how to sort them! I just told the class that it was the first time i had taught it and bare with me. Bless them they did it without me!

#TwinklTeach#caschat All teachers are heroes in some way whether through small or large actions, visible or invisible deeds they are making positive differences everyday to our young people #itstrue#TwinklHeroes
Such a significant shortage of secondary specialists - maybe makes this tricky - as they need time for their own ks3/4/5 training and/ or to train their secondary colleagues who are transitioning to cs? What do people think?
#TwinklTeach#caschat A3 i taught merge sorts for the first time today and had a complete mental block on how to sort them! I just told the class that it was the first time i had taught it and bare with me. Bless them they did it without me!
I believe children respect you mire if you're honest - shows your human side! Also, never be afraid to ask your students for help! #TwinklTeach#caschat
A4 There are so many! Pretty much every Lesson 1 of a new Unit is not as great as I wld like, but as I teach most of each Yr grp I get to tweak it up and improve it. Teaching Sorts hasnât been great. Major fails are wiped away by wine (^_^) #TwinklTeach#caschat
I completely agree. Our younger students in particular come to us from primary so concerned with writing the right thing that they are scared to try! We do a lot of work solving problems together and large discussion when they start to try and encourage them to fail #caschat
#TwinklTeach#caschat A2: Purposefully (or not) i make mistakes all the time. I make no effort to cover them up. Show the class how to fix them and move on.
Crack on the craig n dave youtube videos on sorting algorithms next time and then follow it with "what they said". They demonstrate it using breakfast cereals. What's not to love?!

#TwinklTeach#caschat trying to make sugar crystals and ending up with a load of mouldy sugar water-good H&S lessons learnt and that a surprsing amount of ants can make it to the top of a cupboard and set up home there :P
Look for people who have lots of great questions. Smart people are the ones who ask the most thoughtful questions, as opposed to thinking they have all the answers. Great questions are a much better indicator of future success than great answers.

A4: A lesson with robots, left them to charge all day+night, but when it came to the lesson only one out of the six had charged đ¨ this was a for a big job interview đą But I got the jobđ Why? because I coped so well with the failure #caschat#TwinklTeach
A4 1) I'm a big fan of explicit instruction, sometimes I forget to ensure students have plenty of time to practice and solve lots of problems. I try to make sure this happens every lesson otherwise I can't be sure my students have learnt anything! #caschat
A4. Last year after the AS exam I had a go at the paper (esp the trace tables). Our 12's do their mocks in June so I copied the paper for them with all my working out in it & sent it into the hall. The exams officer came to find me to tell me the students were confused #caschat
A4 Oh yes and setting up the data logger to record light and sound levels over the weekend - but putting it in such a way that it stayed in shadow much of the time so the light levels weren't as dramatic as had hoped. #TwinklTeach#caschat
#TwinklTeach#caschat A4 As an student teacher i was in a 6th form centre with 3 hour lessons. I said go for a break. They came back an hour later. I gave them a 15 minute break after that. #failforward
A4 2) ...Being able to apply what they've learnt to new contexts and scenarios is the ultimate acid test. If there's one lesson to be learnt it is this. #caschat
A4. Ran a @cargobot activity once & a student did so well that I let him be the teacher in the session. A teacher's goal should be to help students get better than the teacher themselves. That is true success. #TwinklTeach#caschat
A4. I had some Drones on loan and told my Ss we would program them using #Python. Obviously, I didn't read instructions, hence I forgot the land command and ended up chasing a drone across the school field in front of y10 Learnt to read instructions first :D #caschat#TwinklTeach
A$. (2)Obviously at that point I had to confess to being an idiot - the students who sat their mock today did ask me if I had kindly provided them with the answers again. #caschat
A4 I taught ultimate frisbee to a group of year 10 girls when I was a student. I was absolutely torn apart. Learned a lot about behavior management that day! #TwinklTeach#TwinklTeach#caschat
