#caschat Evening all. After attending Skycademy & spending months preparing for a balloon launch I messed up at the last minute & used the wrong batteries. Payload fell to earth & stopped transmitting - luckily there was a 2nd transmitter on it!

#caschat I have far too many embarrassing moments. Walking around school with my sons vomit down my back was a recent joyful experience!
  • clcsimon - Moderator Jan 30 @ 3:04 PM EST
Q1. Why is it important to allow students to fail? Why is this particularly important when teaching Computing? #TwinklTeach #caschat

In my previous career I snuck out of the office on a "toilet break" and ran to get tickets to a Steven Gerrard DVD signing for my son. When I got back to the building the lift broke down with me in it and I had to explain why I was in there in the first place #caschat

  • scottturneruon Jan 30 @ 3:10 PM EST
A1 It is important in HE as well. I think it is partly about risk taking and knowing it is ok to try something new - "Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly". John F. Kennedy #caschat Read more at: https://t.co/kMjUOW4ukb
  • DdR333 Jan 30 @ 3:10 PM EST
A1 #caschat ss need to experience a certain degree of failure in order to take pride in their attempts, their resilience and successes. iteration reinforces learning. In computing this encourages more independent thinking and originality

A1. Nothing is delivered perfectly. Computing methodologies (and most things we design/create) are all based around failures and iterating and refining until it is right. Angry Birds came after Rovio failed with 51 games before it ... #caschat

A1) The ability to undo/redo so readily is very useful in helping children not to panic if something goes wrong! #caschat
  • twinklresources Jan 30 @ 3:16 PM EST
#TwinklTeach #caschat And don't children love it when they can point out a mistake that you make? :D
    • MrDaviesDE Jan 30 @ 3:16 PM EST
Definitely! I have a ‘Mr Davies mistake count’ when I tell the children how many mistakes I’ve made that day! 😅

  • twinklresources Jan 30 @ 3:18 PM EST
How can we overcome the 'panic' mode for those students who want to get the answer right- are there any particular activities that are particularly effective at resilience builidng? #TwinklTeach #caschat

Failure is a particularly important part of #coding: rarely does a program work first time. Children need to get used to fixing their bugs. #caschat
  • BradleyDardis Jan 30 @ 3:19 PM EST
If you have created the right ethos in class, there is no emotions about failing, just the idea of moving on and getting it right #caschat #TwinklTeach

  • catherinelliott Jan 30 @ 3:19 PM EST
A1 #caschat I agree - if pupils are only recognised for getting things right they may not take risks or push themselves (hello from Sheffield! Biggest fail missing caschat too often ;)

  • jgreenupnorth Jan 30 @ 3:20 PM EST

It also helps build good relationships in class when children see that their teacher is actually human and also a learner #TwinklTeach #caschat

  • jgreenupnorth Jan 30 @ 3:22 PM EST
#TwinklTeach #caschat A2 the environment one is a tricky question. Building up to a big problem so the pit isn't too big to get out of. Every time the learning pit gets deeper the rope to get out isn't too far away.
  • clcsimon - Moderator Jan 30 @ 3:22 PM EST
I believe it's good to let our students know when we make mistakes - makes us look human and lets our students know that it's OK to make mistakes as long as we learn from them! #TwinklTeach #caschat

A2: All about the classroom ethos, I have always been honest with making mistakes or failing in front of my students if there is a mistake in my coding then I would point it out and say look at that, no emotions no panic just let’s make it better #caschat #TwinklTeach
