My last curriculum coordinator @BrandeeJMorris greatly influenced me as an educator. She challenged me, invested in me, encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, and always believed in me #EDpiper
Q1. The best advice I ever got about how to be an effective educator was “Relationships, relationships, relationships!”
What one relationship changed your trajectory in education?
#EDpiper
The first principal I worked for, who gave me my first assistant principal job, @sandilmassey. Also, the last Principal I worked for, @ElmerAvellaneda. I’m a principal today because they believed in me and helped me get better. #LeadersCreateLeaders#EDpiper
Q1. The best advice I ever got about how to be an effective educator was “Relationships, relationships, relationships!”
What one relationship changed your trajectory in education?
#EDpiper
When I was in 5th grade, the principal called me to the office & told me I was smart. I guess I never knew that. But he said it, so I believed it. He said I marched to the beat of a different drummer, that I could do great things. Thank you, Mr. Thompson! #EDpiper
A1: The teacher who changed my trajectory in edu. was my high school band teacher. She believed in me. She gave me the courage I did not have. She simply believed in me. #EDpiper
A1: I’ve had so many great relationships that have helped shape my educational journey. My hubs @RileyWorld33 has completely changed the way I see teaching and educational. #EDpiper
A1- My 6th Grade Teacher Mr. Feeken was a great teacher! More importantly he showed he cared by being there outside of the classroom. He spoke to my parents to get me involved in sports and would come watch me play. #EDpiper#relationshipsmatter
Jean Embry influenced me, too! I was a teacher, got a little at-risk facilitator role, which meant I got to go to her meetings. She was so encouraging! #backintheday#neverforgot#EDpiper
A1:
The relationships I have watched my mother (@gshsmathmom ) have with her students over her 25+ years of teaching showed me that relationships are key to being an impactful educator! She is my educator inspiration!
#EDpiper
A1: I had a student my first year teaching, Chester. He taught me so much- including how to love the hard to love and how a simple “Good Morning” and a smile could make all the difference. He was a gem. #EDpiper
A1: My third grade Ts was so patient with me and realized that my talking could be channeled with a purpose...went from being "that kid" to That Kid! #EDpiper
A1: I also had an incredible set of teachers in HS. My French teacher and drill team coach sat me down one day and said being a teenager goes away. She promised me that relationships were hard but worth it and told me I would be a great teacher ❤️ #EDpiper
It was all those who invested and believed in me as a student. This is why I feel it is so important to be that encourager and fighter for our Ss. The effects impact them for a lifetime. #EDpiper
Speaking of @sandilmassey. Who remembers the #FlashMob craze? She had us do this at the first day assembly for the students! I think it showed students school and their teachers can be fun. #EDpiper (I hid in the back 😂) Watch it here after!

A2. It is important to take the time to talk to students about topics they are interested in and let them see you really paying attention. #EDpiper#taylorlearns
A2. Take the time to show a genuine interest in who your students are as a person. Go out of your way to celebrate their gifts and talents. Enough people point out their weaknesses, they need someone to help identify their strengths #EDpiper
A2: There's nothing more authentic than humor with kids...laugh with them, laugh at their jokes...have fun with your teaching! #EDpiperhttps://t.co/slYPlfOcvw
Couldn't agree more with that statement!
Taking time to actually listen to students, sharing my life with them also, supporting them outside the classroom.
Setting firm but loving limits and being consistent. #edpiper
A1: One of my high school teachers, @mikalaohill helped spark my love of teaching because of the relationship she built with me! She believed in me and supported me through everything! #EDpiper
@TrueNorthCG A1 I always wanted to be a teacher but my HS history teacher showed me what true love for teaching was. Her relationships she built w students and love for teaching inspired me. #taylorlearns#edpiper
A2:
Authentic means real...you can't fake it or kids will know...you have to be genuinely interested in them: interests, life experiences, how they respond in situations, etc.
Just love them...it's really that simple!
#EDpiper
A2. Great teachers make time to carry on 2-way conversions with kids. You can always spot them because they seem to genuinely care & it shows on the kids’ faces & teacher’s face, too. #EDpiper
A2: You have to show kids that you truly care for them and about them. I get on their level and talk to them about their interests and make every interaction meaningful, not generic. #edpiper
A2: One thing I do is write back to their journal entries. Ss love to share things in this safe way! It gives a great place for them to tell their story without having to feel awkward. #EDpiper
A2: Being genuine with students is a must. They can smell fake from a mile away. Students must feel valued and loved. Then- trust is built and authentic engagement occurs. #EDpiper
@TrueNorthCG A2 I believe building relationships is the first step in being a good teacher. Students want to know they are loved and cared for #taylorlearns#edpiper
I try to share my struggles when I see them struggle (especially @ beginning of school.) Relationships are built the entire year and have to be invested in every single day- even though they are leaving in May. My hope is to last longer than that. #EDpiper

A2: Showing my students I truly care and love them the minute they step in our school and our classroom. One on one conferences just about how THEY are doing, and their life! Relationships are #1❤️ #edpiper#taylorlearns
A2 - “If we want meaningful change, we have to make a connection to the heart before we can make a connection to the mind.” #InnovatorsMindset#EDpiper@GCouros
Q3. With so much focus on the curriculum and “school business” we oftentimes lose sight of the kid!
How do we raise the self-esteem of the students and the academic achievement at the same time? #EDpiper
A1: I also had an incredible set of teachers in HS. My French teacher and drill team coach sat me down one day and said being a teenager goes away. She promised me that relationships were hard but worth it and told me I would be a great teacher ❤️ #EDpiper
My 8th grade Algebra teacher. She had a way to make each student feel important and unique. She was one that truly meant what she said that she would help with anything at all. #taylorlearns#edpiper
A3. Believe in your students and show them that they are capable of achieving great things and they will. They won’t push themselves to take academic risks unless you have created a safe and encouraging environment for them #EDpiper
A3: By continuing to have constant conversations and making connections with the students. That alone builds students up and brings confidence into the mix. #edpiper
A2. Take the time to show a genuine interest in who your students are as a person. Go out of your way to celebrate their gifts and talents. Enough people point out their weaknesses, they need someone to help identify their strengths #EDpiper
A3: Having a positive and safe environment for learning. Letting students know it is okay to make mistakes, and meet them at their needs and level! “Mistakes are proof that you are trying!” is posted right when you walk in my classroom! #taylorlearns#EDpiper
Couldn't agree more with that statement!
Taking time to actually listen to students, sharing my life with them also, supporting them outside the classroom.
Setting firm but loving limits and being consistent. #edpiper
A2: Last year another twitter friend inspired me to write New Year's letters to my Ss. Wow! How they loved them. I had to do it again this year! These letters let them know (in case they didn't already) that I LOVE THEM!
#misdproud@Longbranch_Elem#edpiper
A2: Last year another twitter friend inspired me to write New Year's letters to my Ss. Wow! How they loved them. I had to do it again this year! These letters let them know (in case they didn't already) that I LOVE THEM!
#misdproud@Longbranch_Elem#edpiper
A3: Raise a kids self-esteem by buying into THEM! Encourage, applaud small victories, help them set small attainable goals so they can see what achieving feels like. Take the time and SHOW UP #EDpiper
Q3. With so much focus on the curriculum and “school business” we oftentimes lose sight of the kid!
How do we raise the self-esteem of the students and the academic achievement at the same time? #EDpiper
A3:
Celebrate more than criticize...find the good and point it out... positive reinforcement... positive communication...
When they "feel the love" then hopefully they'll want to do their best academically as well!
#EDpiper
A3: You build the relationship first and then the kids will work harder for you because they know you care and don’t want to let you down. Praise the little wins that soon become big ones and individualize the learning to them, don’t lower the bar, push them to reach it #edpiper
I try to share my struggles when I see them struggle (especially @ beginning of school.) Relationships are built the entire year and have to be invested in every single day- even though they are leaving in May. My hope is to last longer than that. #EDpiper
A3: CELEBRATE.....the big things AND the little things. In my class if I forget to celebrate, my Ss are QUICK to tell me, "Mrs. Dawson, we didn't clap for _________!" They keep me in check!
#misdproud#edpiper@Longbranch_Elem
Q2 Get to know my students...what they like, what they don't like, what truly makes them tick -let them know that I am truly interested in them as a person -they are not just a student in my class...they are a unique individual that holds a special place.#taylorlearns#edpiper
Q4. Kids deserve the best education possible. We all know this! It’s the foundation of why we do what we do.
How are you as an educator showing students that they deserve to be in your classroom or building? #KidsDeserveIt#EDpiper
A2: Last year another twitter friend inspired me to write New Year's letters to my Ss. Wow! How they loved them. I had to do it again this year! These letters let them know (in case they didn't already) that I LOVE THEM!
#misdproud@Longbranch_Elem#edpiper
A3. Positivity is key. Make sure a student knows that learning is a process. Theprocess is just about being better then the day before. After a few times of getting better then the day before you accomplish mastery. It all starts with the teachers presentation. #EDpiper
Teaching is hard work, but it is also "HEARTWORK" that no other profession can bring. Love what you do! It's the best feeling when a passion and career collide. #EDpiper#Heartwork
A4. I try to make an effort to speak life over my students every chance that I get. You can’t just love them on their best days, you have to love them through their worst days too #KidsDeserveIt#EDpiper
No matter what we face, my message and modeling is to #TrustTheProcess It provides vulnerability and transparency that’s it’s ok to fail and get back up...helps in relationship building #EDpiper
A4: We make sure that students are greeted every morning. Starting the day at school with adult-student contact can make a huge difference to their day. #EDpiper
By showing them the impact they have on their learning, and our growing as a class, both socially & academically! I am big on showing them their beginning scores vs now scored & the growth they have had! #ccegrows#EdPiper
A4:
This goes back to relationships...I just love em up...ask them how they are...show interest in their activities, hobbies, jobs, future plans, etc. I think that helps my kids trust me and know that my classroom can be their home any time they need it!
#EDpiper
I try to find ways to connect with students daily. It’s super hard since I’m not on a campus & kids don’t know me. But I find kids are always grateful when people seem to care enough to connect w them, listen, ask how can we make school better for them. #EDpiper#curriculum
A4: I LOVE to email home positive behavior forms. It’s my way of finding something good in EVERY student and committing to telling their parents, their principal, and them. #EDpiper
A4: I stand in the carline every day and greet every student by name and tell them I’m glad they’re here and good morning! High fives and hugs in the halls and again telling them how glad I am they are here today! #edpiper
Q3 Show them you care and celebrate all of their achievements both in and out of the classroom. Make it to their sports games, recitals, brag on them 😁 #taylorlearns#Edpiper
A3. Celebrating success...celebrating success...celebrating success creating goals and building up your students. They need to know you believe in them as a person no matter how much they struggle. #edpiper#taylorlearns
Q5: We all know that “the toughest kids are never absent and show up for a reason! And every child needs a champion.”
What student comes to mind that was your toughest but most rewarding in the end? #EDpiper
I don't think you'll find too many successful students without a teacher who has helped, encouraged, or inspired them along the way. Relationships matter more than we can even fathom. The value is unique to each individual, but I believe relationships are #1 #EDpiper
You know how to celebrate success and how to teach the students to celebrate each other! I LOVED being in your room today and I saw at least 3 examples of this!!! #EDpiper
A5. I had a student that HATED school and every day threatened to drop out. It was tough, but we both made it through the school year. The last day of school he left me a note that thanked me for never giving up on him and never allowing him to give up on himself. #EDpiper
A4. I make sure that I am constantly asking questions about my students lives. Just try to get to know them. The real impact is when I take that information and remember it later. That’s the BIG impact. I listened, but I cared to remember! That’s when it hits home. #EDpiper
A5:
So many from my 1st year of teaching! Lol! But I broke them down by the end of the 1st semester through forming relationships and keep up with many through social media (including ones that called me names and threatened me 😉)! Gotta love em up always!
#EDpiper
Back to my first year of teaching I had some real stinkers. A few years later the one came back and apologized for all the trouble he caused me and now realized he was wrong. #edpiper
Great teachers make their classrooms feel like a family. Families aren't perfect, but they are resilient, forgiving, accepting, and full of love. Every kid needs to belong to a family. #EDpiper#KidsDeserveIt#tlap
A5: My super challenging student was one that came back to say hi year after year - wasn’t sure where he was headed in life, but I kept encouraging and he graduated got a job... and now he’s someone’s dad 😊 #EDpiper
A5: Ss once threw my shoe in the trash because I was blocking the door so she couldn't run out of the classroom...she messaged me last year and asked if I remembered her 5 years later...said she was sorry for the shoe and glad I was still a Ts #EDpiper
Q4 They have to be greeted with a smile and welcomed the moment they step on campus. @RyanTimm14 makes sure that happens each day and sets the tone for them before they enter the school. #taylorlearns#Edpiper
A5: Oh man I had a student one of my first years in the gym that tested my patience every day, but I fought for him, saw him last week and he was working and helped me with my groceries, in HS now and recognized me first, great young man, made my week! #edpiper
Q5: They win my heart over, every year! They challenge me and help me be a better person and teacher! It’s hard to let them go at the end of the year! We celebrate so many small and big accomplishments together! I love that they still come back and see me! #edpiper#taylorlearns
My same student who taught me so much about having a strong, and positive relationship. He was NEVER absent and TOUGH but so was I, and through that we had a lot of time to work together! #SS#EdPiper
R5: I started a “5th Block” program for Ss to get extra help and do homework. I started with 2 or 3 kids and ended up with 30+. It was a place where the kids wouldn’t get in trouble and had someone who wanted to help them do better with their learning and beyond. #EDpiper
Same student that I referred to in Q1. It was a looonnng year- but in the end he came in my wedding, I go eat lunch with him every year, and I see him in the summer. #oncehesmykidhealwayswillbe#edpiper
One of my teachers has her kiddos chant, "It's okay, you're still cool!" whenever a student makes a mistake. One day this teacher made a mistake and told her students so. The students yelled in unison, "That's okay, you're still cool Mrs. Baish!" Super cool! #EDpiper@cbaish1
A5-Same student that I referred to in Q1. It was a looonnng year- but in the end he came to my wedding, I go eat lunch with him every year, and I see him in the summer. #oncehesmykidhealwayswillbe#edpiper
Q5 We all have had that one student 😁 Keep trying and celebrate the small victories. When they leave you and come back for a hug, it makes it worth it. #taylorlearns#Edpiper
BQ. My high school basketball coach made the biggest impact in my life. She encouraged me, believed in me, and never allowed me to give up. I would not be the person I am today without her influence in my life. #EDpiper
A5 - My first year teaching was RUFF! One student made it worth it all in the end when she told me thank you because it was the first year she passed the Math TAKS on her first try. #EDpiper
A5. I had a student who threw a tennis ball out a window, then jumped out of the window, then was brought back by a police officer for being suspicious. Thought I would kill him. Instead 6 years later I was the minister and married him and his wife. Still keep in touch. #EDpiper
R6: there are so many people that have helped me get to where I am. I’ve made mistakes and had second and third chances with where I am. Without these people, I wouldn’t be where I am. #EDpiper
A6: My parents have always been my champion. Both were education advocates and inspired me to become a teacher. They are constantly cheering me on. I love when my mom comments or likes a post on our campus FB page. It’s like a personal cheer for me. #EDpiper
My family, friends and education support system have all been champions and different critical times in my life!
My ultimate champion is my savior Jesus Christ who never left my side and never will!
#EDpiper

A6: My wife. She has believed in me the 10+ years we have known each other. She has pushed me through my masters, Ed Specialist, and now my Doctorate. Wouldn't have made it this far without her. #edpiper
Once had a student who was stealing EVERYTHING! She & class & I decided we are family, so we did a Miss PiggleWiggle cure & gave place w things to take until she decided she had what she needed. She NEEDED to take, so we gave. Class was all-in. It worked. #EDpiper#poweroflove
BQ: It’s hard to choose just one champion! I feel like I’m surrounded by champions! Those who encourage me, believe in me, and support me every day are my champions! I am forever grateful for them! ❤️ #Taylorlearns#edpiper
BQ Gotta go with my Momma! She’s fought for me from day one and no matter how much dumb stuff I did she still had my back, after popping the back of my head! #edpiper
A6: My Ss are my champions! Today, I was struggling feeling like my Ss didn’t care about the #sketchnotes strategy I am teaching... & a former s of over 3 years ago reached our told me what a difference this note taking strategy made in her life. #thatspowerful#EDpiper
Bonus: I know that it’s an educational chat but my champion has been my wife. I think we all grow weary and struggle. It takes a strong person to see how much caring takes out of you and pushes you to do more.Blessed to be married to a teacher who gets it @MrsAutumnRiley#EDpiper
She gets told daily how much I appreciate her. Especially given the career path she has chosen and the amount of work she has put in. Truly inspirational. #DrsWinkeler#edpiper
Make plans for next week #EDpiper crew...we're gonna have a digital book tasting...look on your shelves and grab that book you want every one to know abt!
My husband has been the champion in my life. Hard to imagine, but I was quiet, shy. He believed in me & has pushed me to believe in myself. Because of him, I have achieved things I never dreamed. He’s been a champion for our family & values. I ❤️ you @JWoodyIHS_AG!!! #EDpiper

My mom. She has always been my biggest fan but never hesitates to tell me how it is...she inspired me to be a teacher - she is truly the best educator I know!! #taylorlearns#edpiper
A5- My favorite memory was teaching JR high Eng and a kid who did nothing all day. I asked him if he liked anything in Eng. He told me he liked acting out the stories. Shocked me- he never talked. We made a plan to get grades up and pass. It took Pizza. Worth every cent.
