Hi, everyone! Beth from NJ, posting this week as NGSS_tweeps. Figures it would be one of my busiest weeks of the year! #elngsschat

Did anyone else do a #STEM activity this week they'd like to share? #elngsschat

Hi! Jessica from OH, Elem sci specialist. Sorry I'm late. #elngsschat
  • BTopink Jan 19 @ 8:15 PM EST
Jessica - your job sounds interesting. Can you describe your responsibilities/schedule? #elngsschat

Sure! Science is a "special" class at my school (like to PE, art, music). I have my own lab/room & teach all science. #elngsschat

Do teachers drop off kids or stay to co-teach? #elngsschat

    We are on a 6-day schedule. I see grades 1-4 3x for 35 min periods. 5th grade has 3 35-min periods plus 1 80 min lab. #elngsschat

Each grade has two classes. I teach 6 classes (three grades) a day, most days. #elngsschat

So basically I have sole responsibility for ALL elementary science in my school. Big responsibility/big reward! #elngsschat

The 80-minute lab period must be heaven! One of my biggest struggles is doing labs + discussions in 40 mins 2x/wk. #elngsschat

We love it! We get so much done, and the day is calmer for the Ss. 35 min periods = lots of movement during the day. #elngsschat

I've weighed if changing to longer periods less often would be better, worse, or just different. #elngsschat

A starting routine must be extra important, getting young ones focused & ready to dive in ASAP. #elngsschat

It is & I'm still working on it. 4th & 5th graders handle it well. Harder w/ 1st through 3rd. Sometimes I go to rooms. #elngsschat

Do you have enough storage shelving in your lab for projects in progress for so many grade levels? Or do you do 1-pd. projects? #elngsschat
  • BTopink Jan 19 @ 8:33 PM EST
Just noticed a post about how essential model-building is in NGSS. My Ss modeled this week by designing project tests. Fun! #elngsschat

It's so quiet here! I'm going to spend time w/family until #NGSSchat at 9. See you then? #elngsschat

We make it work. I incorporate a lot of literacy into my teaching so it balances out often. Room perpetually a mess! #elngsschat
