Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1: Practices and skills that will support the proper use of social media can be taught whenever students begin using technology in schools. Think before you post, be kind, etc. Middle school seems to be a good time to for student to being using social media for real. #satchat
A1: Modeling by the teachers can extend social media into the primary grades. Classroom twitter pages run by the teacher provide opportunities to teach digital citizenship. #satchat
We have 150 followers on Twitter in just over a week! Thanks everyone! Here's my fav picture from today, taken during our virtual chat with professor @JenWilliamsEdu, Saint Leo University. Follow us & share our teacher survey: https://t.co/efD7CLaSt1@vhopekennedy@NBPSEagles
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1 I guess we need to be mindful of the age restrictions on social media tools. Nevertheless, most of my middle school students have Instagram accounts #satchat
A1 Just as computational thinking can be taught w/o coding, students can practice good habits of mind RE: social media before they are old enough to have personal accounts. Classroom & family accounts where children participate in deciding what to share are good starts #satchat
Here’s the thing. I don’t think we need to teach students “how” to engage in social media. The same principles that work face to face tend to work in virtual spaces. They are applied differently, but the skills are the same #satchat
Good morning Pam! I was speaking to a school board member this week and mentioned you and @irasocol and your presentation at Techspo and Rewire. She was very interested. She is and admin in Staten Island school district. #satchat
A1: I have used social media in the upper elementary classrooms with teacher support - as long as you teach Ss the power they have through social media (good and bad) let their voices be heard #satchat
A1: As long as account & protections set up with proper communication with families, can start intro proper use of social media as early as PK/K. Ss in those grades can and may already know how to snap pics and post them to social media #satchat
A1) Great Q. I believe the magic age is 13, so definitely around middle school. But my 1st grader already understands twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc from her parents usage & friends. #satchat
A1: About the same time children should be allowed to start throwing curve balls in Little League --no sooner than a few months after their armpits start to stink.
#satchat
A1:The kids should learn from the beginning, that social media is a powerful tool. In order to become good digital citizens, they should learn from kindergarten #satchat#gen2108
A1 Middle school is the perfect place to introduce and teach about proper use of social media. Most middle schoolers will move on to high school with some sort of account and most begin middle school with little exposure to social media. #satchat
A1: I think there is something to be said about following the guidelines of the social medias & going with age 13/middle school... But educating Ss about how to use their digital footprint appropriately should come much earlier #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
#Satchat If we start #teaching#students about respect in the earliest grades (which we do). then they will be equipped to use social media responsibly when they are older.
A1: between 4th/5th grade. Usually when we see more Ss starting to get social media is around those grades. Picks up more in middle school so the more exposure they are given, the better they’ll know how to manage it. #Satchat
Social media use needs to be scaffolded. Appropriate use mirrors appropriate respect & communication IRL. To that end, social media use is modeled from Day 1 of school at every grade level.
#satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
@ScottRRocco It’s never too early to start. Even though technically Ss should not be on social media until 13 many create accounts with fake d.o.b. Also, even if Ss aren't on social media, many are still online from an early age accessing and using different websites #satchat
A1: I just surveyed my 4th & 5th graders last week and learned that nearly 50% are using social media. Upper elementary looks like a great place to start the conversation with kids! #satchat
A1. Ss are entering school with a lots of SM exposure. We need to begin age appropriate discussions/dialogues about digital citizenship/digital footprint in kindergarten! #satchat
A1: Social is a great way to connect, but can harm a persons rep and expose private info. Age-appropriate lessons in behavior and safety is a must, in the same timeline we teach interactions with people...and strangers. #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1: The first and most important step educators can take with introducing the proper use of social media to students is by modeling. Embrace and prominently display classroom, school, and district social media feeds so that students can see the power of social media. #satchat
A1. Ts need to decide if Ss are equipped to deal with interactions that arise from social networking. Pressure to ‘fit in’ or ‘be popular’ can be intense. Romance, group dynamics & bullying can contribute to creating choppy waters that even Ts find difficult to navigate. #satchat
A1 - I think it depends on the needs of the community. Exposure to SM early. Critical part of literacy (shall we call this Twitteracy?) :) ‘Teaching’ about its uses? Grade 4ish. But if we’re giving it to them, we need to teach proper use #satchat
A1: I say we start with them right away modeling positive use of social media whether using it to connect with authors or experts or follow a relevant #... show them how being connected can be used in a positive way #satchat#WO2World
A1: I think we can start in elementary school. Maybe with a class account. Where better to learn how to harness the power of social media then in school. Students will find their way to it eventually. We should help provide the best experience. #satchat
Hi Billy /we are moving to March 1 and I always feel that means we are almost home to spring!!!! Hope all is well with you and your #OPTIworldview - Open to Possibilities, Transforming through Imagination #satchat
Agreed - classroom accounts have been very helpful in the elementary classroom so Ss voices can be heard as they learn how to use social media #satchat
A1 That's a tricky question. I know a lot of parents who do not allow their eight graders use any type of social media. I think we can teach the students to use it responsibly around eighth grade. #satchat
A1: We can model positive sharing and celebrations every grade level. In elementary, students can begin to do this within the classroom through tools like Flipgrid. By the time they are 13, we need to have modeled and taught how to use social media well. #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1: As soon as teachers start having them use technology to communicate with each other, this should be the first step. Google Classroom is still social media, so it's a safe place to start. #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
#Satchat First day of my winter vacation and the learning never stops b/c here we are! Today’s topic of students and #socialmedia is one of my faves. Still in shock with the news to be nominated by @aasl as a Social Media Superstar! #tlchat
A1: Proper use starts w/ at all grade levels for teachers. Educators are professionals who can demonstrate the proper use at all times in how they use it, what they use it for, and what they post. Starting to demo it is probably a 4th or 5th grade timeframe for me #satchat
A1 Tiered introductions like graduated licensing laws:
Elementary age: should we take pictures of this?
Age 13: community standards and "I agree"
Age 16: distracted driving, etc.
the learning is ongoing and evolving #satchat
It's the power that's so dangerous.
I'd be curious to know what percentage of #satchat-ters would be willing to share every site they've visited in the last month to their peers, their admins, to their children.
It’s starting. [they] are scared shitless of our voices. Scared shitless because the truth is coming and there’s nothing they can do but try to slow the spread down. There are ways around Twitter bans. Never back down. Never be silenced. Fight! Fight! Fight!
When to teach kids about social media ... when they start using it and it should start at home and reinforced at school NOT the other way around. #satchat
I would think there's a deeper level with social media because, unlike face to face, you can't see reactions or clarify statements. Everyone can see certain words/pictures and perceive them in a different way #satchat
A1: Following COPPA guidelines, I wouldn't want any teacher to encourage the use of social media before students are 13. However, Digital citizenship should be taught much earlier, even in primary grades. @CommonSenseEd's Digital Passport is a great tool! #satchat
If we would let children out into the world without supervision, we are ready for them to engage in social media by themselves. If we wouldn’t, then we need to take the same stance in virtual spaces. #satchat
A1: We’re implementing technology earlier and earlier into classrooms so we should start teaching students about social media earlier in school (safety, proper usage, advantages, disadvantages, etc.). #satchat
A1. Ss often lack the social, emotional & psychological skills needed to cope with the demands posed by the incessant buzzing, comments & risks associated with social media (there are many adults who lack cognitive resources to deal with it, but that’s another story). #satchat
A1. As educators, I believe that social media should be taught and introduced to students the sooner the better on how to properly use social media #satchat
A1: Social media value and usage should be taught beginning in Kindergarten through modeling and classroom accounts. Students need to learn digital etiquette & value. #Satchat
A1: Middle school AT THE LATEST!!!! I teach 6th grade (11 & 12YO) & the level of drama we have to deal with that explodes on social media is insane. I also think we need to do some instruction for parents. #satchat
A1 I believe we should start teaching students as early as second and third grade as many students in this age group already are aware of Social Media sites. However, we need to educate them early about the proper ways of using Social Media! #Satchat
Just wrote the same thing, then saw your comment.
The platform, IMO, demands better metacognition and tempering our more reckless inclinations. For Ss, that bucks their natural impulsive behavior. #satchat
A1: In 6th grade, the kids all flock to snapchat, insta, and whatever else isn't facebook or twitter. I continually remind about the importance of digital citizenship, and talk about safety online. I pull Newsela articles or Scope articles about it. #satchat
A1 Ts can start using social media w/ Ss from the start of elementary school. It’s all about scaffolding the usage, purpose, support, and teacher guidance/ monitoring. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@ScottRRocco@wkrakower
A1: The first and most important step educators can take with introducing the proper use of social media to students is by modeling. Embrace and prominently display classroom, school, and district social media feeds so that students can see the power of social media. #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1- when they start using the web as a learning tool. You talk about it. Transparency’s key and building an understanding makes the material relevant #satchat
A1 Children start interacting and engaging with each other before we even realize it on social platforms, so teaching them about responsible use is of paramount importance. Better too soon vs. too late. #satchat
#Satchat We must remember to include parents in our efforts to teach proper use of social media. Their help in teaching and reinforcing proper use is critical. #parentsasteachers.
A1: The first and most important step educators can take with introducing the proper use of social media to students is by modeling. Embrace and prominently display classroom, school, and district social media feeds so that students can see the power of social media. #satchat
Morning #SatChat folks.
Kids will start to use it as soon as their parents allow. I actually teach a social media marketing class to HS kids. We use a simulator, as to avoid their personal accounts. But as with most things I model my use as an example.
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1: I watch adults misuse SM day in and day out- Family on FB, edutwitter, etc.
The later kids start, the better- adults don’t seem to wield the power of SM responsibly either. It’s not entirely a “kid problem.”
#satchat
Clarifying the term social media for question 1
Going with dictionary definition for clarity:
websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. #satchat
A1. Social media dos and don’ts should be a prelude to any lesson/any grade. Provide Ss with constant reminders via checklists as references about proper use as Ss move through grade level should be reinforced #satchat
A1. Social media can distract Ss from what is real. It can wreak havoc on their self-esteem. When it comes to ideals, social media is making things more difficult i.e., Ss look to social media to get their news for the day, which often includes info on celebrities. #satchat
A1: Social Media and instant connection is a part of our Ss world => therefor it is our job to be the models of appropriate use! You can’t teach safety in a digital world too early! #satchat
I've seen the same thing. When cyber bullying happens & we bring the Ss involved together, they are often shocked to see the effect their words/images have had on the victim.
#satchat
A2: As an English teacher, I always emphasized the importance of getting peer feedback on writing and giving students an authentic audience for their work. The collaborative nature and far reach of social media are perfect for that. #satchat
Additionally, without the skills of dealing with the constant stimulation, Ss also find it hard to be self aware about how they're conditioning themselves, causing biochemical responses & creating a social media dependency #satchat
@CommonSenseEd is a great tool to teach Digital Citizenship. However, you need to start teaching in the primary grades as many students use social media before age 13. #satchat
A1: Following COPPA guidelines, I wouldn't want any teacher to encourage the use of social media before students are 13. However, Digital citizenship should be taught much earlier, even in primary grades. @CommonSenseEd's Digital Passport is a great tool! #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
A1 I think we need to move beyond the idea of when to teach proper handling of SM and look at it as way to find authentic audiences. Focus on proper way to communicate in a global society #satchat
Hey Losers:
I’m not the one with the Russian reset button, or uranium scandal, or the dossier with Russian lies.

Hey #satchat friends—jumping in a little late today. I’m getting ready to speak to a great group of pre-service teachers this morning at @ECET2NextGen ! #ECET2NextGen
Since I don’t think my students, colleagues, or administrators need or want to see personal information about my reproductive health, I am going to be firmly in the NO category. #satchat
A1. As students move through the grades we need to help them move from CONSUMPTION of SM to CURATION & CREATION for positive purposes. #socialjustice#satchat
A2: As a building principal, I model how to use SM for positive purposes. I showcase the accomplishments of our Ss, give the community a window into the classrooms, and use SM to learn new things. #SatChat
Not only that, they are watching videos on their phones. The TV in the living room is no longer relevant, and parents and educators, for the most part, aren't really in tune with what media they are consuming. #satchat
A1: The introduction should be differentiated to ensure that its age appropriate. In our world, students are being exposed to social media at all different ages. It’s never to soon to model themes that encourage appropriate usage and how we should treat people. #satchat
A1:I agree, the earlier the better. Kindergarten is an excellent place to start. Teach digital citizenship early and those habits strengthen as they progress in years. #satchat
I agree! Young students now know about all social media because it is so prevelant in our lives but they may not be taught how to properly use it, if not taught at school. #satchat

A1: My initial reaction was upper elementary .... used in a class setting -- talking to authors, etc. However, let's be mindful of students w/o devices or parents who prefer to limit their children's social media/phone use until they are older. #satchat
There is nothing wrong with using social media for professional reasons. Just remember that anything you do on it can be seen by anyone in the world.
#satchat
A1: In what grade do we teach students to communicate? That’s when we introduce social media!
Modeling and constructing a tweet as a class is foundational to ensuring this tool is used for amplifying student voice and making relevant connections from the start.#satchat
Totally agree! We have had issues with students at 4th grade with cyberbullying. Tech teacher and principal handled the situation well. Now she is introducing digital citizenship early in the year. #satchat
A:1 In our elementary school (due to age restrictions) we just try to raise awareness & model proper use of social media. We heavily use SM to celebrate our students’ successes & all of the amazing things that happen each day. #satchat
A1. Ss often lack the social, emotional & psychological skills needed to cope with the demands posed by the incessant buzzing, comments & risks associated with social media (there are many adults who lack cognitive resources to deal with it, but that’s another story). #satchat
A1# As a middle school we do a lot of intentional education around social media. I do a whole lesson on Twitter and how it can be used to connect to primary sources. I also moderate a class chat to make them aware that it can be used for more than just memes and likes #satchat
That’s the key. Understanding the landscape of virtual spaces and how real that is. Same principles as face to face. Really we are teaching social media isn’t a bunch of NPCs (non playable characters) #satchat

#satchat. Young students w/ older siblings are sometimes exposed much sooner than intermediate grades. Being socially responsible on media and elsewhere must be a frequent conversation at school..in all grades. #socialresponsibility

A1 As a parent it’s been about learning and earning as we make our way through this new world. As far as school, I’m grateful that he can catch up online at home.#SatChat
Why are so many teachers eager to introduce Social Media at such a young age? The arguments seem so developmentally shallow. For educational purposes... Really? If that is the case, please do not teach my children... Please. #satchat
If we truly believe it might be harmful at younger ages, then this is like arguing that we should teach kids how to drive or use condoms safely.
#satchat
I think they also need to know that the lives people portray on social media are not necessarily realistic. Many teens feel depressed when they compare their own lives to pics of their peers portraying themselves as constantly happy & socially active.
#satchat
We’ve got plans in the works. We are at the beginning stages but the clock is ticking. This is sorely needed for kids of all ages as well as parents. #satchat
Yes! Students have taken leadership roles at @digcitsummit and other venues. We're all learning this stuff; anyone can be a teacher or learner in this space. #DigCit#satchat
A2: Currently, I am using social media to expand my PLN. I can gathered more innovative ideas from an hour on twitter than traditional PD and it can be done on my time. #satchat
A2: I know it's become standard but a district hashtag on Twitter has had a huge impact. Ts sharing the great things they're doing in the classroom has helped us overcome the EDU isolation & build our community. Check out #btsdtigers It grow consistenly #satchat
A2: I contribute and enjoy staying in tune with my district’s hashtag #WeAreChesterNJ. No better way to see the great things taking place in our classrooms and schools #Satchat
FABULOUS idea!!! We need to work on this. By the time they get to me, some students already have "figured out" how to manipulate social media so their parent (& Ts) don't know what's happening. #satchat
A2 I try to celebrate the kids, teachers, and school on social media regularly. My #PLN is a great inspiration for that as well as learning and trying to implement the great things others are doing at their schools. #satchat
Ok, classify this idea as borrowed! I am working on a workshop for parents, now I will get the middle school and 5th graders to do the workshop for me! Thanks for the idea. I will have to gather the troops. #satchat
You mention "Talking to authors etc." Thats a good way to use social media as a class without individual students using. An opportunity to set an example and demonstrate some guidelines. #satchat
I think they also need to know that the lives people portray on social media are not necessarily realistic. Many teens feel depressed when they compare their own lives to pics of their peers portraying themselves as constantly happy & socially active.
#satchat
My district uses twitter to share our fantastic things happening in our schools—I know the primary audience is parents/community but I love seeing all the amazing things happening in our schools! I personally use SM to learn and to network. #satchat
I think they also need to know that the lives people portray on social media are not necessarily realistic. Many teens feel depressed when they compare their own lives to pics of their peers portraying themselves as constantly happy & socially active.
#satchat
True for me, too. Some of my best friends are folks I have never met in person. Some have been close friends for over 20 years, when social media was AOL chat rooms and bulletin board sites. #satchat
A2) We have infused social media as a tool for engagement & promoting the great things happening at school. We have Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, NextDoor & Facebook currently. #satchat
A2. To support transparency via consistent communication via twitter/FB/posted newsletters etc. Embed opportunities for Ts to contribute to school community via social media/model how to appropriately use with Ss via suggested social media resources #satchat
A2: I don't encourage SM use for class purposes, other than platforms we use in class, such as Google Classroom or Flipgrid... but I use twitter to tout the wonderful stuff we do in class and connect with parents. Not comfy yet engaging kids in cyberspace... #satchat
A2: I use twitter constantly to share what’s happening in the classroom, connect w/authors of books we have read, @kaaauthor liked our tweet last year! And also to connect w/classes for #MysteryGHO#satchat
A2. As an elementary principal, I use SM to highlight/showcase my school, staff and students @AlexMuirPS#ampsIMPACT#ampslearning . Personally I use it as a professional learning tool. Always amazed by the willingness of educators to share online! #satchat
Just like kids exposed to early to other languages, kids with early exposure to social media can master that language. Maybe that's why we adults can have a harder time! #SatChat#DigCit
A2- using student run twitter chats or posting a “warm up” question to a class thread the night before and have students comment to add relevant discussion points to warm up questions to encourage student voice in class #satchat
A2. I have not as much as I wanted. When I first started teaching, I wanted to engage students in reading responses on Snapchat, but I didn’t do a good job of setting up the system for it. #satchat
I’m not sure where the rest of this chat is heading but we need to start going beyond social media and start taking on toxic internet culture as a whole. I see so much go unaddressed likely bc most Ts aren’t part of the culture. Would be a good #satchat topic one week.
A1 Teaching Digital Citizenship lessons should be day 1 when students enter school. Yes, to K students! With the use of tech now, should be starting from the first time a child starts using a device. I talk with my son about safety using SM #satchat
Its getting ridiculous. Democrats wanted the wall once, National Security is not something that POLITICAL GAMES should ever be a factor. It’s a necessary deterrent. It won’t stop #IllegalImmigration but it will help
If not start deporting Liberals then Mexico might pay for it.
Who are the models of social media use for our Ss? Their accounts are flooded with stories that give them access to the formally inaccessible => the president, athletes, movie stars- how do we model its importance over the vapid and superficial? #satchat
A1: As long as there is meaningful purpose, social media can be used as a teaching tool at any age. Through its educational integration, it can model appropriate usage and digital citizenship. #satchat
A1: Teaching appropriate use of tech should be taught as early as possible. Ss are coming in to kindergarten with a working knowledge of social media platforms. They need to be taught how to interact appropriately. Starting with civildiscourse and password security #satchat
A2: I can only go at this from a S point of view since I am not an educator yet. as someone who started school late in life I was really surprised by the use of social media for educational purposes. #satchat#gen2108
A2: I use Twitter with my colleagues to spread the word about best practice. Sometimes I have Ss write tweets as a way to synthesize their thinking. I talk to my Ss a lot about my use of social media professionally. #satchat
We all get tired, stressed and frustrated.
What we do is rewarding but difficult.
Let me be your guide during this journey.
Not because I have all the answers, but because I think I can help you find your own.
We can do this together.

A2: Social Media infused into my educational practices:
- #satchat every Saturday
- search SM for content I can share with others
- use SM content to build out newsletters for staff
- communicate with & inform stakeholders through SM
- model professional use

Important thread, and I think that's why schools can take the lead early. If young kids can participate on classroom social media accounts, they can build agency and accountability in online spaces. #SatChat#DigCit
A1. Ss often lack the social, emotional & psychological skills needed to cope with the demands posed by the incessant buzzing, comments & risks associated with social media (there are many adults who lack cognitive resources to deal with it, but that’s another story). #satchat
The community of learners in the Twitterverse has changed my educational perspectives many times. Some great role models (and some “what were you thinking? 🙄) at your fingertips! #satchat
A2 I’ve used social media to encourage Ts into using it as a different way to engage in the professional learning they’re interested in on their terms and timelines! #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower@ScottRRocco

A1: We had students teach at faculty meeting when I was middle school principal about every type of social media. The students had learning targets, quizzes, and engaging presentations. #satchat
A2 Infusing social media into my practice is centered around the belief that we are stronger together. Connections made here have challenged my thinking and changed the way I teach in big and small ways. It has cracked me open as an educator. #Satchat
A2: Using and modeling social media in education as a place to celebrate, connect, brainstorm, and share ideas helps all of us as educators! Stretches our thinking & inspires us be better for students #Satchat 🌎📚💻📱🌏
So true, @TheBradCurrie Ed leaders are uniquely positioned to share out great insights, highlights, and successes from within the school #satchat we must lead and share!
A1: The first and most important step educators can take with introducing the proper use of social media to students is by modeling. Embrace and prominently display classroom, school, and district social media feeds so that students can see the power of social media. #satchat
Many educators need to know this too ... sometimes I wonder if we are all in some sort of teacher competition when for all things teaching. How does that affect teachers who may not have the same resources/opportunity #satchat
A3: Important for students to know that there’s no eraser online. They’re playing with permanent markers. You fix mistakes that same way you would in person - admit you were wrong, apologize, learn from it and do better next time. #satchat
A2: One major goal has been the emphasis of not allowing others to dictate our own value. Some use social media as a means to gather approval. We promote not allowing others to dictate our worth. Likes and retweets don’t define who we are. WE dictate our worth! #satchat
A2 Lately been using live streaming tools. In the hallways. Concerts. PTA meetings. Parents ability to see children interact in a school setting is a game changer. #satchat
Yes. There was a posting on Facebook about this. Always protray the positive and never the negative but life has it's hills and valleys. We all go through them. Explain that in reality bad things happen but the most important thing is to GET BACK UP AND MOVE FORWARD! #satchat
A2:Personally not comfortable w/SM use w/my Ss due to privacy & child safety concerns. I have adopted @Flipgrid use which we love. I dream of an interactive book chat w/families though. #satchat
A2: It is my lifeline for Professional learning. I work to cultivate our district wide #WO2world hashtag as well as coordinate and moderate our monthly #WO2Worldchat with @tyniathomassie and members of our Teacher Twitter Taskforce Team! (yep that 's a thing) #satchat
A2: Twitter is my PLN. I learn from my colleagues. This is the best PD. I also have Facebook for professional use only. I am a part of many fantastic groups. Again, learning from my peers. Our district uses Twitter mostly. It’s an inside look and flattens the classroom. #satchat
One thing I’d like to ask those of you that run sm for school or classroom, how do you handle disgruntled comments. I do not delete as it’s freedom of speech. #satchat
A1: Hi everyone. Kim Pond; FL; HS ELA. Overall, digital citizenship should be integrated within classrooms that will be using tech. for collaboration. If a S is using an iPad or Chromebook to work w/ others, they need to understand how to do responsibly and respectfully. #satchat
We've given examples to them of social media posts having real consequences. My Wife is in higher ed, so we've talked about the ramifications of a poor sm imprint on college admissions.
They've used G-Classroom and Padlet as sm platforms to create and respond.
#satchat
I've also used Twitter as a backchannel for our Socratic seminars in class to give students additional outlets to talk about what interests them, but I also provide a no-tech option for students who aren't comfortable with the idea of posting their thinking publicly. #SatChat
A3: This is tough, because of the lasting impact mistakes on SM tend to have, but I think you approach it much like you do other mistakes...reflect, apologize for the mistake and make a plan to make to right. #SatChat
A2: as a district admin, I primarily use SM as a means to share and promote best practices and to learn from my PLN. As a school admin I used it to promote student learning and Tchr collaboration my my building #satchat
I use Twitter to help give me ideas and inspiration. I am hoping to set up #SkypeClassroom with a few classes next term.
With the younger children it’s about teaching them how to be respectful online and be aware of dangers. #satchat
A2: We try to model how using SM properly can help you make connections both near and far. We use Mystery Skype and Gloval Read Alouds to connect with classrooms around the world! #satchat
A2: I also use social media to show my teaching, get ideas from other educators at many levels, and also keep involved with understanding what my Ss see out there #satchat
Social media has been a great tool for mass communication with parents on happenings at the school! I also love how it has broadened my PLN! I have learned so much and made so many great connections via social media. #SATchat
This is the scariest thing of all! They have the world at their fingertips with no parental guidance, and the world can be a dark place. I find they have knowledge of things at 11 years old that they can't comprehend the importance or significance of yet. Scary! #satchat
Not only that, they are watching videos on their phones. The TV in the living room is no longer relevant, and parents and educators, for the most part, aren't really in tune with what media they are consuming. #satchat
Enjoyed chatting with our great President, @realDonaldTrump. We love & support the @POTUS because he loves & supports all Americans. He's done more for black people than any other President in our lifetime. There are those that write history but President Trump is making history.
A2: Social media is a means for highlighting great practices and teacher/student accomplishments in my world. I also use it to engage in resource sharing and resource collecting through establishing real & virtual connections with fellow educators and maintaining them. #satchat
A3: Using non-digital activities like squeezing the toothpaste out of a tube, then asking students to put it back in… or crumpling paper then trying to smooth it again...once something is out there in social media, it is hard to delete its full impact on others. #satchat
Agreed. And how often have districts seen the results of social media misuse, which means administrators need to address challenges in the school community? #satchat
A1. Ss often lack the social, emotional & psychological skills needed to cope with the demands posed by the incessant buzzing, comments & risks associated with social media (there are many adults who lack cognitive resources to deal with it, but that’s another story). #satchat
Oh my goodness, Mike!! You are my first blog post review! Thank you for sharing how a #PassionForKindness has impacted your thoughts re: teaching & learning in the classroom. I love how you recognize the need to hear from our quietest learners. Such joy! #tlap#leadlap#satchat
Yeah, I know as a parent that Twitter has been life-changing for me. Would love to find a way to get more parents on here and not just Facebook. #SatChat
A2: Twitter is my PLN. I learn from my colleagues. This is the best PD. I also have Facebook for professional use only. I am a part of many fantastic groups. Again, learning from my peers. Our district uses Twitter mostly. It’s an inside look and flattens the classroom. #satchat
Yes. I believe we can broaden their horizons & introduce them to the world beyond tech & social media. During global school play day it's amazing to see Ss discover the joys of old fashioned play. We can expand on that. #satchat
Hey Gina... what grades? I'm finding my MS kids not loving their vids on Flipgrid ... which is ironic to me but my kids tell me that when they post on SM, they carefully curate final products so... it's different #satchat
It sure is. Incidents like gamergate, acts like doxxing, Meme culture, and radicalization through places likes 4chan, Reddit, discord are just as serious as digital citizenship but goes largely unaddressed #satchat
A3: Using non-digital activities like squeezing the toothpaste out of a tube, then asking students to put it back in… or crumpling paper then trying to smooth it again...once something is out there in social media, it is hard to delete its full impact on others. #satchat
The power and platform of social media is not going away.
Instilling fundamentals of interaction & behavior are non-negotiables. We can't say we are providing anti-bullying curriculum and ignore the elephant in the room. Explicit and early instruction is req'd.
#satchat
A3: I'm a firm believer in teachable moments & learning the lessons from mistakes made by others before we make them ourselves. Look for lessons learned in everyday moments. #satchat
Love this! As a teacher-librarian I had the students tweeting for the school and never had any issues. They love having a voice and the responsibility #satchat
Yes, yes, yes. Even include those in our PLN that we might disagree with. @3_DLeadership always has me stopping and reflecting on different comments or topics. I also have a personal friend who is like this. Need these people in our lives and in our PLN. #satchat
A1: Middle school (grade 6). So many Ss are already so connected to social media that they don’t realize the power it has to uplift, bring down, or be used as a vehicle for learning and change. #digcit is imp. and will help Ss become more life ready. #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
One thing I’d like to ask those of you that run sm for school or classroom, how do you handle disgruntled comments. I do not delete as it’s freedom of speech. #satchat
A3: There is a great lesson on digital footprint on @nearpod where Ss have to decide which of 2 candidates to hire based on looking through their SM presence. Invaluable and they are harsh. #SatChat
In the classroom (with photo permissions of course) - Admin/Teachers can tweet out amazing things happening / gets students excited & parents updated. We use it for schedule updates/instant updates, etc #Satchat
That’s great! Lifting Tchr voice is vital. We have been trying out district wide twitter chats once a month about topics teachers stated they wanted support. It is going well so far. Has anyone tried to support chats for your school or district? What has worked? #satchat
I totally agree! Especially body image. I have children as young as 4 talking about wanting to be more beautiful like the young teens they see online. #satchat
This makes me think of older kids who don't use social media, either by parental restrictions or by personal choice. Shouldn't they still get guidance? Having SOME digital footprint online is beneficial for their future. #SatChat
A1 That's a tricky question. I know a lot of parents who do not allow their eight graders use any type of social media. I think we can teach the students to use it responsibly around eighth grade. #satchat
But that’s not a product of social media. That’s humanity right there. People dehumanizing other human beings. That’s the problem; not social media. #satchat
A2. One simple way to infuse social media into curriculums is to imagine if... Imagine President Washington had a Twitter account, what would he tweet? Etc. #satchat
A2: Our curriculum department creates a monthly digital newsletter. I also participate in weekly and monthly twitter chats. Finally, online webinars or google classroom to connect with other educators. #satchat
A3: With anything else we do we talk about being thoughtful before doing it, you can say “sorry” for hurtful words but the damage has been done, you can delete a tweet but it might have been seen - THINK before you post #satchat
A2: Where doubters see an echo-chamber filled with self-promotion, I point to the fact that SM helped to create transparency for my families, build connections with other educators, and become a professional resource for inspiration and ideas #satchat
A2: I rarely promote my own blog during Twitter chats, but this one is so very relevant to this discussion this morning. #satchathttps://t.co/UoHZn5PHQr
I have the pleasure of training future administrators and teachers. One of the first things I do is illustrate the power of Twitter for developing a PLN and for their own professional growth/knowledge. Many have trouble envisioning the good that can come via Twitter!:) #satchat
...and we tend to hear the great stuff, but there is so much as teachers we don't post, so the scale is skewed. We need to teach that to kids - it's not always what it seems in the picture. #satchat@DennisDill
Many educators need to know this too ... sometimes I wonder if we are all in some sort of teacher competition when for all things teaching. How does that affect teachers who may not have the same resources/opportunity #satchat
Hi all! I’m Sean Olson a HS math teacher in southern NJ. On my way to Stockton University with our chess team for a tournament but didn’t want to miss #satchat
A3: especially in the upper elementary grades, Ss are already on social media - I think about that before I post anything. We need to instill that in them. #satchat
#KCeducators! unconference TICKETS ARE READY!

A3: Use inappropriate use as an example, with discussion of how you could change it to make it appropriate. I'm thinking of comments in #GoogleClassroom for the littles. I hate to turn off the option to comment when we can use it as a learning tool(for when it counts!). #satchat
A3. Supporting Ss in reminding them to take the time to THINK before they POST is a good first step! Ongoing review and discussions about creating a positive digital footprint is key #satchat
A3 Mindfulness is key to protecting the space between trigger and response so we make good decisions in our IRL & online conduct; #emotionsmatter & #SEL leads to positive #DigCit#satchat
A3: There is definitely not a shortage of real world examples of how NOT to use social media. We need to share these with students, discuss the implications, what could have been done differently, & choices they might make. Powerful discussions will arise #Satchat
A3 I always teach kids who have misused social media the proper way to get rid of the current and future issues on social media so they don’t make mistakes in the future. One thing I always say is it’s never too late to correct a mistake, it’s not gonna fix itself #satchat
A3: Mistakes are going to happen. Teaching Ss that we all make them and teaching them about digital citizenship and basically how to be a good person online and fact to face is important. Teach them to do better next time and move on #gen2108#satchat
A2 I’m a Parent Ambassador and I love visiting schools and posting the great things happening in our classrooms. I love shining a light on the people who truly deserve some recognition for being passionate about our kids and their education..#SatChat
A3: I think we should teach students to think about what they want to say. Maybe write it down and let someone else read it before it is posted to see if it sounds ok. #satchat
A3 Gr.4 T We discuss mistakes made re: use of shared docs, Bullying in a class doc. Misuse of comments in G.C. Not exactly same but place to start. #satchat
But we must be cognizant of what our Ss are using with social media. The trends change so drastically. Many Ss are not using Twitter and Facebook anymore. #satchat
A2: our campus uses social media daily to highlight school events & classroom greatness, personally I use it to showcase Ss and send out reminders & learn new best practices #satchat
I keep coming back to the concept of humanity. Teaching kids about humanity, and resisting the idea of dehumanization is the skill we should be focusing on. Toxic internet is caused by humans who dehumanize #satchat
A3: 1st, they need to be ready to own what they post. 2nd, encourage Ss to proof before they hit send/reply. 3rd, they have to be ready to apologize when things are misunderstood. #satchat
Love this idea too. Our Ss gave workshops to other Ss on "consent" & it was so much more effective than adults giving the workshop. I imagine Ss teaching Ps would be even better!

A2: Our @Oak_Leadership students participate and host #OLAchats (Twitter chat) which features student created questions and recently has had student co-moderators. The connections made and sharing of knowledge has been so impactful for our S leaders. #Satchat
It wouldn't be a bad guideline to think of it in the same way schools introduce drug and alcohol abuse prevention, health issues, and sex education. Start early; graduate to more mature and advanced social media-related issues as they get older. It's about mental health. #SatChat
A1: I just surveyed my 4th & 5th graders last week and learned that nearly 50% are using social media. Upper elementary looks like a great place to start the conversation with kids! #satchat
A3. The same way we do about all other mistakes. Learning opportunity. Exemplars of other mistakes w/ support & scaffolding on how to fix them. Sometimes... Natural consequences. And a chance to reset & remind them that most mistakes don’t go viral. #satchat
A3: Acknowledging mistakes, creating a plan regarding how to get a little better each day and executing that plan shows that you are trying. Mistakes alone aren’t bad. Missing opportunities to learn from your mistakes is what becomes problematic. #satchat
Hi All~Mary B. Mackley from NC. Dropping in to say hi&learn. As the author of a Civics Handbook (Middle & HS)~ appreciate hearing from teachers, ideas. Love learning, sharing ideas. Hoping to Inspire & make a contribution to Civics Ed. Appreciate all Teachers out there! #satchat
A3) When I was AP at Middle School - our principal introduced & consistently shared T.H.I.N.K - he kept a poster on his door as well. Realizing my HSchoolers May need it more 🤨 #satchat
It's been said over & over, but it's worth repeating: we cannot be fearful of technology & trying new ideas. Technology can enhance & accelerate learning but great pedagogy trumps everything. Change can be difficult, but staying the same is equivalent to falling behind.#satchat
Yes to all of this and I feel like when Ss get to engage with it to connect with others to deepen their understanding of a concept or to gain a different perspective- THAT'S where the magic happens! #Satchat#WO2World
Tar-and-feather them. But seriously, folks. In a world where group-psychosis demands virtual mob mentality, schools need to respond with restraint. We are a place of *teaching*.
Not every mistake - no matter how egregious - should be a social death sentence for our Ss.
#satchat
That’s a great idea! Or have students teach students about digital citizenship and literacy through advocacy time/structure. Wonder if that could be done in conjunction with the parent Crews. #satchat

I agree with @3_DLeadership. The toxic aspects of social media are not unique to social media. They are the same toxic behaviours that have existed among humanity for as long as humanity has existed. Doxxing has been around for ages, we just used to call it "outing." #satchat

In my last school, social media use wasn't encouraged, so I felt disconnected. Getting connected at my current school has helped me move so much as a teacher because of all the people out in front of me here + it has also helped me realize I have something to contribute. #SatChat
A3 although social media is a tool it’s a powerful tool. Ultimately it’s about being a responsible, thoughtful, caring individual. We focus our efforts on developing social emotional competencies. The rest should follow #satchat
A4: Your social media account is a representation of you. Treat each post as if it were being broadcast to the world (it is!) but choose your words as carefully as you would when speaking to a good friend. #satchat
Good questions. I don't think it's just about what we consider the traditional social media platforms. It's every connection they make online, through whatever means. (And the answer to the second question is yes!) #SatChat
A3: learning by example is key. Showings kids both the successes, and mistakes, of others (and the consequences) helps them develop their sense of boundaries—social media boundaries are important, just like interpersonal boundaries #satchat
A3: Before posting a comment or a discussion, always remember to READ and THINK before creating a post to insure that it is appropriate and safe #satchat
Great. We’ve been doing that too. We also have school based folks helping to do-moderate. We usually have great attendance from those schools. #satchat
@bethbeverly2 I think this is a great idea in that it transfers what students do for papers--rough draft, grammar corrections. And, it slows them down. No spitting out what immediately comes into one's head. #satchat
A3: I think we should teach students to think about what they want to say. Maybe write it down and let someone else read it before it is posted to see if it sounds ok. #satchat
A3 This is tough b/c Ss don’t always grasp the idea of long term consequences. We need to continually and explicitly teach and model good online behaviors while clearly pointing out & explaining the wrong behaviors. #satchat
🏀 #SatChat -> You can't always get down to the gymnasium for your basketball workout, but you can do these drills in your driveway or garage: VIDEO- Basketball, "5 Minute Ball Handling Routine" | Tony Watson II https://t.co/z6NYgTjhO6#Basketball#BallHandling
Teachers and schools do way more than teach students today. We feed them, keep tabs on their well-being, protect them, and guide them. Add proper use of social media to the mix. We can no longer just follow a curriculum and grade homework anymore. #satchat
A1) I think students are engaging in social media (or at least being exposed to it) earlier and earlier, so providing the building blocks of good digital citizenship should begin as soon as possible #SatChat
A3: We have to model the appropriate use of social media at each grade level and encourage positive and respectful discourse and video/image sharing. Realize that posts can be deleted but not always forgotten; toothpaste not easily returned to tube. #satchat
A3: To misappropriate Rogers&Hammerstein, "You have to be carefully taught." Feel like we need to require a class in "Online Etiquette & Social Media Citizenship" #satchat

A2 I think we need to model & teach character & ethics 1st. Enthusiasm is free & its contagious. but so is negativity. I see both on social media-sadly, the latter demonstrated by adults in our society. Your online persona reflects who you are - do good. #satchat
A4: Write it and walk away for 10 minutes... still want to post it? Give your posts the same critical evaluation you’d give your writing… and ask yourself if you want a variety of audiences seeing that post. #satchat
A3-As with all life lessons, we teach empathy & kindness. Social Media is the new universe that surrounds our kids, for them it’s just another tool. As you would explain physical hurt, you can frame SM hurts (educator and mom perspective) #satchat
A3: We do a lot of role play, dilemmas, what would you do scenarios. Build discussions around what comes up. Sometimes can be very eye opening!

Why should I be compelled to use Kahoot on a daily basis, because the teacher my students had LAST YEAR used it regularly. 'It was so much fun!!' Once you give kids soda, it's very hard to convince them to drink water too. #satchat

A4: The advice I would give a S about his/her social media account is that nothing posted on the internet is gone forever & to learn to use the security and privacy settings #satchat
A4: I always remind them that what you post stays there, so even when you are older and your opinions change, it will still be there. I use my google search as an example where you can see my "MySpace" profile picture... forever. Luckily it's not a bad one. ;) #Satchat
Social media exposure and use starts with kids long before they enter school. Not sure it should be a question of when we start to teach them to use it safely and responsibly. Immediately. It's not like they are waiting for us before they use it. #satchat
Essential reading for all in this #Satchat about how white nationalists are using social media to indoctrinate and brainwash young people. This is the toxic dark web that we need to address & it’s dangerous reach to spew hatred.

A3 Unfortunate many of the colleges that train future educators donot understand the power/benefit of SM and tell the to stay clear of it. WE need ot have discussions with them about teaching SM ethics in a classroom setting. #satchat

A4: Advice to students about social media
1 it's your digital profile
2 others are watching & following
3 it can be more good than bad - what you post, like, share will determine that
4 learn to use it for educational purposes
5 try different types - find what you like

Yes! And you're right, with my kids' schools' SLOW adoption of social media channels, they're pretty much copying the same thing on each platform, probably figuring it's just about reaching different audiences. Missed opportunity. #SatChat

A3: restorative practices on our campus allows Ss to take ownership of mistakes and see how the situation affected others. We all slip up, modeling that we r imperfect as well shows our Ss that mistakes are inevitable but that it’s our responsibility to take action #satchat

“Nothing” will always be the answer to “What did you do at school today” from a kid, but w/ social media we can help control the narrative of our learning spaces=> A school hashtag creates connection and builds culture #satchat
A4: It’s a 24/7 resume, job interview, and peek into who you are with the most powerful microscope society has access to. If you wouldn’t say it, tweet it, snap it, or post it in the middle of Times Square with cameras on you, then think twice. #satchat
A3: Guide on the side, teach into it. Often,we're quick to place blame on the student-But have we scaffolded and supported their efforts or just tossed a device into their hands with little support? Teacher monitored, student led accts help facilitate this work #WO2World#satchat
A3 we discuss tone when posting online, and practice via class discussions on Google Classroom. Ss see their posts and how others react to them but have the chance to talk F2F about their comments as well #satchat
The indoctrination piece is not new. Remember (dating myself here) the love-bombing by cults in the 80's. It's the reach of the tools which is very concerning. #satchat
A4. Social media is another way to build your reputation. Actions speak louder words/responsible use of social media is a reflection of your character so remember the public and permanent rule. #satchat
A3: In the early days of the Internet before social media was a term, WYSIWYG was a common approach; the idea was that your online persona matched your real life one. We don't need to teach digital etiquette; we just need etiquette. #satchat
Something else I’m reflecting on. Power dynamics. We don’t teach this in face to face interactions, but the salience in social media spaces is critical. Not all individuals have the same power #satchat
A4. Your digital footprint is permanent. It is currently easier and cheaper to store data than it is to delete it. This means that for every one of your online actions—positive or negative, deliberate or unintentional—there is a permanent record. #satchat
Q3. If they are new to Twitter, I advise just watching and learning for a period of time. Have them look at what is appropriate and what is not. Overt discussions and sharing examples (good and bad) in class helps this, too. #satchat
While I enjoyed the post, I think a lot of us are ignoring the bigger issue of the harm caused to children by prolonged screen-time, no matter how well delivered. The evidence is out there.
#satchat
A4: The best advice I can give to students about about their social media accounts would be: to remove that there will be others who can read and see what your post, so it is important to remember to put safe content and proceed with caution before creating a post #satchat
A4. Your digital footprint is used by employers—both current & prospective. An online background check by recruiters is a common practice. It is important to care for your digital footprint if you’re job hunting, as Googling is now a central part of the hiring process. #satchat
Embed SM into the learning work and continuously focus on what it looks like to use safely and kindly beginning early - for example class twitter accounts can even be used by Ts - great way to make sure children learn about their privacy rights too! #SatChat
A4: @thelivbits says it best: "Who you are online should be who you are in real life." Students should want their social media to reflect their best selves #satchat
I used to model for students how to make the most of twitter, using it in classes for text based chats and for live tweeting in newspaper class of school events #satchat
A3: Always a good reminder to not “band wagon”; to step back from an emotional response & to look at all of the available facts. When ready to respond, do so knowing that it’s another human being on the other end who may hold differing beliefs, attitudes, & experiences. #satchat
UC Berkeley employee overjoyed that conservative is punched in face: 'Makes me feel emotionally so much better' Who in their right mind would send their child to this socialist University? UC Berkeley clean up your act! Protect 1A https://t.co/ENs2Eidfqp
Report: FBI's top lawyer testified that he thought Hillary Clinton should be prosecuted over email scandal — but was talked out of it! Comey made sure everyone covered 4 Killary! #IndictComeyNowhttps://t.co/equ0QICV42
That's been true with every advance of mass communication and technology, though. It seems odd to claim that the toxic behaviours we see online are *because* we are online. The toxicity starts long before someone starts typing. #satchat
Show your best self without showing off. Let it reflect your (G-rated) passions, curiosities, and compassion. Make it the kind of thing you'd be proud for people to remember you by after you're gone. #SatChat A4
A4. Any photo you post could be dug up some day. Limit your sharing of questionable images. Fifteen minutes of humor is never worth a lifetime of potential humiliation. #satchat
I did an activity with S's where they have to say something unkind w/their backs to each other, the turn and say the same thing. It's funny how much easier it is to say when you don't have to make eye contact. Try it! It's pretty powerful. #satchat
A4. You are allowed to have an opinion. You are allowed to disagree. How and what you say matters. It has consequences. Just like IRL. But digital footprints don't leave. They always follow you.
#satchat
A2) Let’s see
☑️ Increase my professional network
☑️Stay current on topics in education
☑️promote all the good that goes on in my district #TenaflyPS
☑️Keep in contact with colleagues and friends
#Satchat
A4: Advice to students (to anyone) about social media:
1. Never post things you wouldn't want on the front page of the NYT.
2. Be kind.
3. Be intentional.
4. It's real estate. Treat it like an investment. It pays off, used right.
#satchat
A3. Be creative. Take a character from a story who made mistakes (bullying another character, etc) & pretend this bully had a social media account posting mean comments - ask students to be upstanders - What should you or other characters in the story do? #satchat
A3: Mistakes are going to happen. Teaching Ss that we all make them and teaching them about digital citizenship and basically how to be a good person online and fact to face is important. Teach them to do better next time and move on #gen2108#satchat
A3. Digital literacy and citizenship has to be directly taught. At @mgmgators we did it in conjunction with Habits of Scholarship lessons on respectful communication. School counselors also taught THINK. We did roll plays and simulations around appropriate use of SM. #SatChat

REPORT AND BLOCK all inappropriate content (words and / or images)
This will make the chat experience better for you and your PLN
Show your best self without showing off. Let it reflect your (G-rated) passions, curiosities, and compassion. Make it the kind of thing you'd be proud for people to remember you by after you're gone. #SatChat A4
Transparency is an underrated element of being on social media: we want to be able to show our stakeholders + communities what's happening in our classrooms + schools. If you don't tell your story, someone else will. It's a great way to make our cultures visible. #SatChat
A4. The digital world isn’t going anywhere anytime soon—so think of it as a lifelong development. Take advantage of the platform to present yourself in a good light and show off your best qualities. #satchat
A5: I use social media to promote my books, share my writing process, and connect with bookstores, schools, libraries, and readers that I’d never be able to reach otherwise. Without a huge publisher doing all that for me, social media is essential. #satchat
A4: once you post, consider it public forever. Also, if you are responding emotionally to something - step away for 30 minutes - then, decide if it’s still ‘necessary’ to post. #satchat
A4: Nothing shared on the internet is private. If you put up a picture even if you protect it, someone can take a screenshot & share it. Ss (& people in general) don't understand how dangerous this can be.
#satchat
A4. Make your SM account an extension of what you value. Friends? Family? Justice? Learning? Music? Sport? Post though a ‘values’ filter. Make your posts fill someone else’s bucket somewhere. Never post what will empty someone’s bucket #satchat paraphrasing @cmvsocialmedia 😉
A3. Digital literacy and citizenship has to be directly taught. At @mgmgators we did it in conjunction with Habits of Scholarship lessons on respectful communication. School counselors also taught THINK. We did roll plays and simulations around appropriate use of SM. #SatChat

#satchat
A5: I saw a school in Chicago fighting against being shut down - they used twitter to share their story and even connected with a celebrity rapper on twitter who carried their story so much further. #satchat
Very true! To take it further we need to teach citizenship not just digital citizenship. The online world is just as important as offline, F2F world. Students need to know how to interact with both worlds. #satchat
#KCeducators! unconference TICKETS ARE READY!

A4: look at ur loved ones more than ur phone, talk 2 people more f2f, make friends in person, eat dinner w/ur family, go outside, read a book u enjoy - when online remember: nothing gets deleted! Be a person of integrity & don't post anything your mom wouldn't b proud of #satchat
Let's see now! You choose Isis Over America! You married three Isis Fighters! You witnessed & supported beheadings of Christians! You call for the killings of Americans in this country! Now you want back in & forgiveness! You should be put on trial & executed
A8: I continue to love how Superintendent @SuperNicol and Ellington Public Schools promotes their Ss with their social media mashup on their webpage: https://t.co/SuyE1RNJvo#satchat
If this is true then we should have the right to see the list of names he paid off! That should be public information! We have the right to know if our politicians are on the take or not & if they are they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law
A5 The best example of social media use I have seen always revolves around celebrating your kids accomplishments. We can never have enough of that in the world. #satchat
I realize my 4ths are already engaged in social media. They all seem to have own youtube channels or whatever... What I try w/ them is a drop in the bucket. #satchat
This is EXACTLY the kind of scaffolding-toward-social-media approach that is needed. It is online social engagement. Awesome place to teach the foundational skills of digital citizenship!
#satchat
A4) My advice I give students about social media is that it is permanent. Nothing is truly erased or deleted. Colleges are looking & your future employers are looking. Be careful with your digital footprint. It is part of your resume. #satchat
"As far as I can determine, this is the greatest harm that has ever come to me from watching television."
If it is true that is the greatest harm caused to you by TV, then you are very lucky.
The issue here is harm to children, other people's children.
#satchat
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
I'm always amused when people have big reactions to privacy issues on FB etc. They're putting it out there for all to see. Best way to keep it private is not to post. #satchat
A3 This is tough b/c Ss don’t always grasp the idea of long term consequences. We need to continually and explicitly teach and model good online behaviors while clearly pointing out & explaining the wrong behaviors. #satchat
A2: Social media has become vital to the educational process. Communication is the most effective use of social media. Educators can share information, celebration, expectation, and create a level of transparency that builds strong parent and community relationships. #Satchat
A2 SM has become a great place to not only showcase the great things happening in schools, districts, and classrooms, but also to learn from others. Such great resources and information literally at your fingertips. Unfortunately, I have to sign off .... #satchat
A5 for our learnerstur best use of SM has been to connect with others s beyoind our classroom to extend their learning and give them an authentic audience. #satchat
A3. Be creative. Take a character from a story who made mistakes (bullying another character, etc) & pretend this bully had a social media account posting mean comments - ask students to be upstanders - What should you or other characters in the story do? #satchat
#satchat this wonderful Saturday morning has so many stellar Twitter users sharing their thoughts. What we have all gained by their participation on Twitter is invaluable in moving forward as educators. Hats off to them!
A3 - Unfortunately no matter what we teach in the classroom kids seem to ignore it w/ the excitement of their first SM account. The problem for me is that some SM ignites and encourages an obsessive and addictive behavior. That’s why it‘s so important to model for them. #satchat
A4: I embrace the terminology of a digital tattoo rather than a digital footprint. The permanence is easier to understand & the importance of choosing what you want to be permanent via social media sharing... #Satchat
A5: I use it for sharing amazing resources & ideas as well as spreading great things going on in our school. I love when T's use it to celebrate their S's, you can see the joy they get from it. P's love it too! #Satchat
A5: I really like blogging as a use for social media in the classroom. I makes the Ss respond in a manner that is meaningful. It can invoke further thinking and questioning. #gen2108#satchat
A5: Love watching @MsAnzaloneMPS connect with other classrooms via @Skype and @googlehangouts_ to discuss reading, meaning and life. Have also enjoyed watching @Dleonard413 via @YouTube do the same. Both are examples of connected educators going global. #satchat 🌎
A5: there are so many Facebook groups, Instagram/Twitter accounts that share resources among educators and it’s so nice to get ideas from outside our school walls! #satchat
Wild project by @mthornton78 who put a question argument up from his 3rd graders on twitter “is a straw a simple machine?” He had so many responses-an astronaut, research physicists, high sch teachers & more they opened a google doc - kids got to see the adults argue 2 #satchat
Teaching that the rules of humanity and kindness in our physical worlds are no different in our digital spaces => respect and care for others need to transcend devices, spaces and platforms. #satchat
Why does it ignite that? Because kids find it to be an escape from face to face interactions. It becomes a “better” reality for them, and just as real #satchat
Address real-life mistakes, but discuss how "mistakes" often reflect truth about a person. Kevin Hart would be hosting the Oscars tomorrow night if not for his "mistake," but is that more a story about intolerance? Maybe it's about striving to be better in general? #SatChat A3
Trying to show someone the power of Twitter. Would you take a second to reply here and tell us where you are tweeting from and what it is that you teach or do? Thanks!!
#edchat
Our Ss also need to realize that Whatsapp and other chat groups are equally dangerous. "but I just shared it with my friends..." Yup, but one of those friends was mad at you and now it's out there for the whole world to see.
#satchat
We are in front of a global scandal or around one billion people who still suffer from hunger today. We cannot look the other way and pretend this does not exist. The food available in the world is enough to feed everyone @Pontifex#satchathttps://t.co/elhCqmnsPy
A5: The best example of my my use of social media would be having to separate accounts on Twitter, with one being professional and participating with Tweet chats #Satchat
A5: also - getting as involved! Letting them tweet at authors, participate in chats through a class account, I have colleagues that participated in the Global Read Aloud and their Ss LOVED it #satchat
A4: Everything is public. Screenshots and retweets happen in an instant. Think about how others will view you and what information you share(location, habits, etc.)—your reputation is important and so is your privacy/safety. #satchat
A5: Twitter helped introduce me to @voxer, which lead me to the @4OClockFaculty book study, where the #4ocfpln was built & that PLN has been transformational. #satchat
A5: My entire feed is a great example of how to use SM as an educator, just so many of yours! It's a blend of conversations, connections, sharing, teaching, and learning. #satchat
A5 My best use of social media is finding other educators to learn & connect with! This chat inspired me to do one in my district! I love when people who normally wouldn’t connect come together to share ideas! #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
The movie Eighth Grade is an accurate depiction about discrepancies between a trend Life on SM sand her real life. It may be an eye opener for some.#SatChat
THIS!! Engaging - seeing others share, inspire, and uplift peers who they don’t know is the beauty of social media. It allows us to see and help another through their struggle and celebrate their success.
If Ss see THIS positive interaction, that’s powerful. #satchat
A4: Advice to students about social media
1 it's your digital profile
2 others are watching & following
3 it can be more good than bad - what you post, like, share will determine that
4 learn to use it for educational purposes
5 try different types - find what you like
#satchat
A5: when Yik Yak was a thing, I was able to encourage a student to go to the counseling center after they had been sexually assaulted. They got the help they needed #satchat
A4. Everything you post, snap, tweet, etc becomes your image to the outside world. Show/model for the world an image of kindness, civility, and greatness. Social media can be your sweet dream or a not so beautiful nightmare. It's what you make it! #satchat
A5. What if .... I had never followed @mssackstein and learned SO much from the amazing resources she shares on Twitter? That would be awfully sad. #satchat
A5: @garnet_hillman and @kenoc7 started a Facebook group for teachers transitioning to standards-based classrooms or systems. The resources are amazing, and the conversations about learning are rich and rigorous. It has been phenomenal PD for us. #satchat
I'd contend that the bucket is only the tech tool itself.
You are adding control of the spigot. Does the content go to the right people the right way, or is the content (digital footprint) sloppy, splashing all around? Coming out in a torrent or a controlled flow?
#satchat
This can cut both ways: my students share their research + experience in Twitter chats. In addition to building hard + soft skills, they've made their thinking visible + used their voices as everyday advocates. Their building their resume + acing the interview already! #SatChat
A4: For my HS kiddos, I encourage them to treat their presence on SM as an investment portfolio: diversify your connections and maximize your presence. Post authentic things and have positive interactions/discussions. Question themselves: will this post help or hurt? #satchat
A5: Ps follow me on Twitter to see what's going on in class - LOTS of compliments. Ss 💖 any likes/retweets our activities. Show Ss some ideas I find & get their input. #satchat
A5:There a few-many Ts kick off the year participating in the @globalreadaloud which is natural conduit f/social media use.... Also Ts are connecting their students globally by pursuing real world social action issues #satchat:
This is super exciting! Our 5ths in NJ are working on NF/Social Action projects using the SDGs! We would love to connect with your Ss! Let’s “do our part”!! #avenueforchange@DFerrera521@beccapelli#WO2World
“Nothing” will always be the answer to “What did you do at school today” from a kid, but w/ social media we can help control the narrative of our learning spaces=> A school hashtag creates connection and builds culture #satchat
A5 Social media can bring unreachable people and locations to the classroom. A class Twitter account can follow authors, zoos, scientists, etc. I love that aspect. #satchat
A5. I try to share the power of SM use by administrators both as a tool to showcase/highlight your Ss, staff and school & as a personal professional team. #satchat
A2: we use social media as a way to promote the amazing this going on in our school and community. I’ve learned so much from others by “checking in” #satchat
A5: The best example of social media use is the Twitter educational chat. No matter the hashtag it is amazing to see how educators, no matter title or location, come together, share, help, inspire, collaborate, learn. It's a shining example of what can be in education #satchat
A5 The Edu PLN - always there for all of us - I remember when #edchat was about it and now chats abound - and there is a world of educators who have built a community #SatChat
Would love to have the kids experience an online chat with other students outside of our school to discuss a topic. They would see the power of SM to learn and share (other than selfies!) #satchat@SusZanti5
@gcouros shared this quote many years ago on Twitter. I was SO impressed, I quickly created a graphic and now view the Twitter feed each day of amazing educators who follow his suggestion. #satchat
A4. Advice to kids: Recently took my daughter to a Princeton U soccer ID camp and the coach said that they monitor recruit’s social media to search for only students for his team who he would consider a mentor for his young daughters. #satchat
A1: Short answer=ASAP. Long answer: Modeling good use of SM via professional + educational tools ASAP (eg @RemindHQ) can be a powerful way to demonstrate the impact of SM embedded within an applied & safe context. #Satchat@ScottRRocco
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
My life in the bubble as a pediatrician makes me wonder if you are joking. There is a lot of medical literature on the negative effects of watching television, lifelong detrimental effects on health and mental well-being.
Not advocating to ban, just looking at evidence.
#satchat
A5- so many I like. Two I recently tried to model after are @thomascmurray and @Joe_Sanfelippo with short leadership “nuggets” or messages. I started a channel for “daily learning” tips from their inspiration #satchat X-Factor: Daily Learning https://t.co/1aONcI7t07
#satchat A5 As someone said earlier, when we can showcase what is happening in our #schools, that is a powerful use of social media. When I tweeted a picture from my #classroom, and a parent liked it, it let me know they had a window into their child's learning at that moment.
A5: although not started by a traditional “educator,” the ice bucket challenge was a funny, but basically safe, way to educate about a serious disease and the need for more research. Viral challenges are a great way to engage, but must be safe #satchat
Curious if actual citizenship is taught in elementary school? It might be good to teach citizenship fir lots of reasons including a way to locate digital citizenship within an important context. #Satchat
A5: Our SM use brands us and is part of our identity => my own twitter feed gives perspective to others on what I value and experience as an educator => Ss need to see that this tool is a living digital portfolio of their professional identity #satchat
Discuss digital citizenship once devices are used... social media specifics when students are old enjoy understand they would be breaking the law if they are not 13. So 3rd grade. #satchat
Question 1 now up for discussion:
Q1: As educators, we have all found value in the use of social media. In what gradde should we introduce it and start to teach students proper use? #satchat
Not only that, they are watching videos on their phones. The TV in the living room is no longer relevant, and parents and educators, for the most part, aren't really in tune with what media they are consuming. #satchat
A5: The best example of social media use is the Twitter educational chat. No matter the hashtag it is amazing to see how educators, no matter title or location, come together, share, help, inspire, collaborate, learn. It's a shining example of what can be in education #satchat
A6: So many good resources out there for social media and students. Of course anything by @EvolvingEd but how about a lesser known one like maybe some of the social media resources by @EFF that would help Ss to critically look at their social media use. #satchat
A5: since the day I joined Twitter, I’ve felt connected to hardworking, creative, positive, & dedicated educators that inspire me w/ infinite instructional ideas, provide strong prof reading, & lasting support. & provide a platform for me to try to reciprocate. #satchat
A5 I loved when our 6th gr Algebra teacher did flip classes. I could watch along with my student and help and he could take his time and stop or go back when needed. #SatChat
A1:Teaching Ss about social media requires real conversations about the reality of forever once the post is shared. We need to model appropriate social media etiquette and provide opportunities for Ss to practice positive social media communication.Protect your brand. #satchat
I’m not sure where the rest of this chat is heading but we need to start going beyond social media and start taking on toxic internet culture as a whole. I see so much go unaddressed likely bc most Ts aren’t part of the culture. Would be a good #satchat topic one week.
A1: I have started using social media with my students in First Grade through a digital booktcamp @TopDogTeaching and @Seesaw My Ss are able to comment on peer work and post we have chats about why things when items are not approved. #satchat#seesawchat#seesaw
Television, not properly monitored, especially with the explosion of channels, can be very detrimental. Heck, just watching the news. And news is more instant than ever. No waiting for satellite time, or having to ship film or video across the continent. #satchat
My life in the bubble as a pediatrician makes me wonder if you are joking. There is a lot of medical literature on the negative effects of watching television, lifelong detrimental effects on health and mental well-being.
Not advocating to ban, just looking at evidence.
#satchat
A5: examples of social media being used by educators for good are only a #satchat hashtag away
The same is true across SM platforms. Educators connecting & sharing in a positive way can be found on FB, IG, Snap... encourage others to find where they can grow & be challenged📱🌎
Social media has been a great tool for mass communication with parents on happenings at the school! I also love how it has broadened my PLN! I have learned so much and made so many great connections via social media. #SATchat
I make it a point to spend time on the couch with my girls just watching television. No phones, just watching and discussing what we are watching. Its time I'm not willing to give up! #satchat#gen2108
A5. Honestly, things like #satchat. Being able to share ideas and help each other grow and evolve as professionals has been very rewarding! Personally being able to stay connected with family and friends, both near and far, is awesome too!
A5: I especially appreciate these educational, professional chats. The authentic sharing of amazing ideas is definitely my favorite part - meeting and collaborating. #satchat
A6: there is a great book I read called “other-esteem” the principles in that book have been foundational in navigating social media and real life. https://t.co/851CAgfki1#satchat
Q5: Social media can be leveraged to help others or further meaningful discussions. I am heavily involved in the https://t.co/mU4PfgkZLy community and love RTing projects to increase their exposure. I also RT & celebrate the accomplishments of other Ts near and far! #satchat
My students, particularly my @Skyline_WC tutors, are always Twitter chatting with other teachers + kids about their research + experiences in school. It's been powerful getting them connected to a world bigger than themselves + our school. Perspective is so important. #SatChat
look at ur loved ones more than ur phone, talk 2 people more f2f, make friends in person, eat dinner w/ur family, go outside, read a book u enjoy - when online remember: nothing gets deleted! Be a person of integrity & don't post anything your mom wouldn't b proud of #satchat
A6: Google has a digital citizenship program called Be Internet Awesome for Ss that looks interactive and informative! Excited to see others resources! #satchat
A6. This school is modeling Twitter use by students in such a creative way! They can place a written tweet in the box and then later someone can post it on a school Twitter account. Practicing ..... #satchat
A5 Social media is also a reminder that the values we follow as #educators are the same for #teachers around the world. As a former insomniac, I have used #twitter to connect to teachers in New Zealand, Australia, the UK. Support for what we do can come from anywhere. #satchat
A6: your colleagues, Twitter, YouTube - my coteacher and I have watched plenty of videos before launching into a new social media platform, teacher blogs, etc. There’s plenty of help out there - seek it out! #satchat
A5 In my mind the BEST use of social media is to crowd source and knowledge build for solutions and positive social change #satchat 2 of 2 #constructivism
A6. We use @CommonSenseEd resources often to support direct teaching of digital citizenship. This gives us content to have structured convos around the positives and negatives of SM. #SatChat
Link - https://t.co/LbNEXSLCCp
A1: I think that it is one of our responsibilities as Ts to help Ss know how to be good Digital Citizens at an early age. We need to start at KG talking about the Ss "Digital Footprint" and how things they post/do online stay there forever. #satchat
A2: I use social media to participate in Twitter Chats and to grow as a teacher. I also learn from #Instagram our school has a Facebook page and I most use #Seesaw for P connection and Ss work #satchat
You are an athlete, you know the joys of being outside and moving around--but as you bike through your neighborhoods, look at the glow coming from so many windows from so many folks who do so little physical activity.
I want children to have a fair shot at health.
#satchat
It’s what each person makes of them. Some carry convo on beyond chat, some have spirited DM convos after. Some agree to meet/talk. Others take info & share with colleagues to get the depth they want. It’s up to the individual. We start the convo. You finish it your way
#Satchat
If you want to feel positive and energized about education, read @PeterMDeWitt column ‘Finding Common Ground’. #satchat guaranteed to be thought-provoking.
This Democrat parade of candidates, who are already attacking each other, with more to jump the train, and the congress seats as well, will be the best dumpster fire movie ever filmed. Pure entrepreneurial gold. #satchat#SaturdayThoughts#saturdaymorning
A5 a good way to use social media in the classroom is give the option of creating private videos on youtube for educational purposes/projects and sharing w the class #satchat
A5: It’s also nice to be able to connect w/ authors and other figures that would normally be inaccessible to us. @ajlucio5 was so awesome to fully fund our @HP Sprout project and we also met Chinua Achebe’s son who ended up supporting our project for “Things Fall Apart”! #satchat
A5 Staff and Students find social media an excellent way to build networks for learning and leading too, especially in remote boards that have geographical challenges and can’t meet f2f #satchat#learningetworks
#SatChat
As soon as children get to school. Ss come to school w/social media awareness because of parents' habits. Learning how to protect their likeness, their thoughts & their words should be a responsibility congruent to teaching them to write/type their name. #STEM21
It's hurtful F2F and it is hurtful online. It's like trash talk in sports. I have always wondered if it is necessary to demoralize your opponent as an advantage. It is reflected in media so it only takes a step to be online. Not good! #satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @meg_allison, @TechedUpTeacher
A2: I have infused Social Media into what I do to help "Tell my Story" about what I do as an ITRT, what my beliefs are as a T, and to help me to continue to be a Life long learner. If you don't tell/share your story then others will tell your story for you. #satchat
In the decade on Twitter I found Ed chats to be surface often because they are of the moment. There’s some value of course but it seemed a mistake to confuse a quick chat with sustained study. #satchat
#Truth for me screen time and lack of play are biggest concerns / more so than SM blunders... as a MS principal i see so much screen time..... #satchat
#satchat A6 Of curse, I would recommend #twitter to other educators, particularly for the connections it facilitates through twitter chats. I would also recommend #edcamp.
We r doing great on our mission to have Rep Omar expelled from Congress

A6) Sometimes you have to dive into the pool and start swimming! Find hashtags for your interests. One place I would recommend to start would be @cybraryman1 page. #satchat
I'm pro-positive SM use in young people, but am more concerned about this issue of self-worth more than the rarer instances of cyberbullying or sexting. I hated hearing that kids delete posts that don't get enough likes. Platforms should stop emphasizing follower counts. #SatChat
A2: One major goal has been the emphasis of not allowing others to dictate our own value. Some use social media as a means to gather approval. We promote not allowing others to dictate our worth. Likes and retweets don’t define who we are. WE dictate our worth! #satchat
A6 @CommonSenseEd I think is one of the best places to start if you are discussing Digital Citizenship. Also check out @s_bearden book on Digital Citizenship. #Satchat
If you want to feel positive and energized about education, read @PeterMDeWitt column ‘Finding Common Ground’. #satchat guaranteed to be thought-provoking.

A6: I had just found a good resource for other educator to use regarding some tips on how to use social media safely and responsibly! Here is the link: https://t.co/WQ2ua6eANe#satchat
that's the end of this week's #satchat
Thank you PLN for participating and providing valuable info / resources.
Thanks to my co-moderators @TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
Carry the convo on using social media or with colleagues at work.
Hope to see you next week at 7:30am EST
Of course! I don't think Digital citizenship is enough. We must be intentional and gradually release responsibility over to students. It begins with teacher modeling. #satchat
A6: Ts MUST become part of the network. We don't have validity w/Ss if we are not using the platforms they are on. Shared some of what's happening in class with a former student yesterday. She was excited. #satchat
Something else to consider: the more time tweens and teens spend on social media, the less they are reading books though they may argue, “We are reading all the time, but on our phones!” What’s the right response? #SatChat
New Q: A thank you note fm Q team to Board Owner (BO), Volunteers, Bakers (prepare each "bread"/thread with notables, key links, & most recent Q drops), & Anons. Pepe the Frog has never been more popular! We all thank YOU, Q team! God bless our POTUS (Q+), Q team, & our military!
We are seeing uptake of social media to capture student voice too! It can be very empowering for youth to SEE their ideas being taken seriously outside of school #satchat#studentvoice

Tangentially related, here's a great article in @Smithsonian magazine from 2016 about the "toxicity" of radical technology, such as the automobile and the telephone. "OMG! We've Been Here B4" https://t.co/usSwigWpYe#satchat

‘How can we continue to develop a culture of transparency and change while still respecting those who aren't where we need them to be yet?’
This is a great starting point to be thinking about! #satchat
I think about how famous people (or even those who just become famous online) can post anything and they know they'll get responses en masse. That can't be a good way to measure the worth of how we contribute to the world. #SatChat

Author visits have been shown to increase engagement & growth in all areas of literacy. Skype, hangouts, etc make these amazing opportunities more feasible- and/or frequent #satchat
Doing anti racism work in the era of social media is interesting. I'm not quite sure the pluses are worth it.
The pressure to be a shiny package is real. Yet the work isn't just IG moments, media coverage and book deals.
I've been sitting on some feelings.
A6: I regularly bring up my own Twitter page on the screen in class & show things too my students... educational & creative & inspiring things. To show them good uses of social media.
#satchat
I literally POUND TWITTER for @realDonaldTrump and all the Great ones who do as well.
I am Followed by the Greatest Trump Supporters as well. I am like you = I get down and out but keep Fighting for him on Twitter! It’s very tough but a must!
A6: a must read resource is #SocialLeadia by @JCasaTodd The conversation is beyond digital citizenship- we need to be talking digital leadership with our students #satchat
And think about how long you planned for those tattoos & their placement!
The art of the draft & the delete button are 2 Skills I also think we MUST model & teach our students. #SatChat
A6: while twitter is great for learning, there is value in other platforms that can give you more permanence - we use FB groups for PLC with corresponding shared Giogle Drives for resources #satchat
There are a lot of Q followers supporting and defending me , all other Trump Supporters and President Trump himself.
For myself = I AM IN!
As the man says = What the hell do you have to lose?
A6) I would first say check with your district & instructional technology departments to determine policies & then develop specific guidelines that are consistent for your school (teachers & students) so they it is used responsibly & maximized. #satchat
A3: I think part of the way we teach Ss about if you make a mistake to fix it is to model what to do. Teach them that if you make a mistake own it. Don't let it define you and move forward. As long as you learn from the mistake that is what is important. #satchat

A6: @CommonSenseEd is a wonderful resource and @PwC’s “Digital Fitness” app is a powerful learning tool for Ts. @nearpod has dynamic interactive lessons on #digitalcitizenship that can be rapidly integrated. Twitter has awesome chats, like #satchat, that can truly impact Ts.

A2: Many years ago I worked as a substitute teacher and was with a high school calculus class. The students were stumped so I showed them the power of Twitter. Went online, asked for help, and got an answer within minutes that helped them solve the problem. #satchat
A5: The best example of social media use is the Twitter educational chat. No matter the hashtag it is amazing to see how educators, no matter title or location, come together, share, help, inspire, collaborate, learn. It's a shining example of what can be in education #satchat
