A1 Glow: That I am sticking w/FAs & looking for new ways to utilize them Too easy to give up, or abandon a practice Important that Ts stick with positive practices that are best for students #formativechat
A1 #formativechat as a leader, I'm proud that I can help instruct staff that form assm't is a pedagogical need. 1) UBD, 2)Form assm't 3)Diff Inst...Can't have one without the other
A1 Proud that my students learn to notice where they are in their writing process and as writers, and choose how to proceed—rather than being told what to do. #formativechat
A1 The evolution of my use of diagnostics. Incorporating more inquiry and conversation into these in order to lessen stress on students and provide more meaningful intel. #formativechat

#formativechat teachers are seeing the benefits district wide, using the data to determine next steps, students are involved in developing their goals. Results create but in.

A1: I love using FA with my drama kids - I call them "process performances" By the time I finally assess, I've send their projects 4-5 times. I love seeing the progress they make between each performance! #formativechat
A1) I am proud that we are letting formative assessments drive our instruction and goal setting. We also are able to see the growth of our students as well. We still have to grow in this area but we are on the path. #formativechat

A1: Perhaps the opportunity for Ss to articulate their learning narratives in reflective writing products. The metacognitive nature of FA that encourages Ss to acquire agency over their learning. #formativechat

A1: immediate feedback with FA is exactly what education needed. I have the ability to differentiate assessment while meeting the needs of all learners and assist where needed. #formativechat
A1: Emphasis on mastery rather than compliance. Too many Ss view learning as a one-and-done proposition. FA turns this view into a multiple-attempt journey toward mastery. #formativechat
@NancyDickinson7#formativechat Formative Assessment only works when the teacher knows the destination in advance. If Formative Assessment is the journey then it doesn't work when we don't know the end goal.
A2 Growth: Student created & evaluated FAs Instead of trying to figure out what will be the best measure of my Ss I need to make them more part of the process #SecondSemesterGoals#formativechat
A2) #formativechat@LizTechTrainer@HanlonJD I would like to help my staff understand and show that edtech is a vehicle for good formative assessment but ed tech in isolation is missing the boat. This is a work in progress
A2 Tracking effectiveness of the multiple FA strategies utilized ... Which do Ss respond best to? Why? Which are most predictive of future performance? That stuff... #formativechat

#formativechat A2 I really liked a reply to #1, students creating and writing FAs for themselves and others. If they can do this appropriately, they understand the process. If they understand it to that level, Ts can stretch Ss farther, and raise achievement.
A2 I want Ss to be more involved and reflective of their needs. I have experimented with this and allowed Ss to sign up for mini lessons or even suggest mini lessons to help drive learning but want this idea to have more traction #formativechat

A2: Many of our responses to this Q involve student-led or student-owned efforts in employing FA. Much to be said for self-efficacy in deep learning. The more intrinsically motivated our Ss, the more established their learning becomes. #formativechat
Way back 20 yrs ago I had Ss create reinforcement lessons to teach class during 4th quarter...May try to implement some Ss teaching Good idea Christina! #formativechat
So some mini-action research about the FA you are using? Sounds like a great idea. If kids track what works for them it might help them choose different strategies when something isn't working #formativechat
A2 Tracking effectiveness of the multiple FA strategies utilized ... Which do Ss respond best to? Why? Which are most predictive of future performance? That stuff... #formativechat
A2: More transparency in the way Ss engage with FA to improve their mastery. How can they implement the feedback from Ts and peers to inform additional attempts at mastery? #formativechat
Reality: Sometimes teachers are more concerned with a student’s missing homework than with a student’s missing skills. #edchat#Tlap#leadlap#formativechat
A2: I think FA is a great fit for transforming a class into now of a workshop format. In film studies, I call my FA production meetings. #formativechat
Perfect phrase! A workshop is just what all our classes should be like A place where Ss are part of the processing of building thought skills #formativechat
#formativechat a1 Piling on as I think about actually having to teach writing. This would be a cool and helpful process prompter. Impressed @LaurenPorosoff

A2: What does the Ss use of FA say about my pedagogical effectiveness? How can I evaluate my Ss reaction and engagement with assessment to improve the way I approach the teaching/learning process? #formativechat

A3) I've mentioned RUBRICS to a few people for Q2 - one of my favorite tools in the classroom. Check out @nsulla's latest blog on the topic https://t.co/0zScBnQgze#formativechat
I have Ss self assess and analyze their work all the time. And yes, they are generally a lot tougher on themselves than I’d be. This idea is one of the hacks I wrote about 👍#formativechathttps://t.co/q4IAEHHKvP
A3: If Ss aren't involved in the FA process, then no goal is adequately achieved. Must be a collaboration between a teacher willing to spend time providing meaningful feedback and Ss willing to employ that feedback to improve their mastery. #formativechat
A3 Students can identify what makes learning meaningful for them, and then we can assess the extent to which they’re making their learning meaningful in those ways. #formativechat
A3: Conferencing with Ss is essential - how did they use Ts DF? How did they use their self-assessment to improve their work? What grade can we agree on? #formativechat
A3 #formativechat
Make them aware of their current mastery levels and help them create goals. Goes back to “where am I, where am I going, how am I going to get there.” Data notebooks, class graphs, and clear expectations help Ss track data and create plans.
A3: Empower them in the process! Let them self assess and share their thoughts as often as possible. And let them see what others are doing, too! Helps them more accurately assess themselves. #formativechat
A3: Ss need to be the ones communicating w/ their parents; Ts play a role but Ss need to take a more active role in using the DF/FA to communicate w/ their parents. #formativechat
I do that..it is the justifying part I need to work on. I get a lot of shrugs. I should mention I teach HS who are significantly below level readers...#formativechat

Swoopin in and out quickly but glad to have grown once again from my #PLN (I think that's going to be my twitter chat rap refrain... Grown once again from my #PLN) Thanks y'all #formativechat

A3 my goal is to help Ss reach theirs because they have to want to be successful and learn. I think FA helps us see Ss for who they are as learners and provides a more individual pathway. Give Ss the tools they need to take ownership of their learning #formativechat
I really like the idea of prior planning. Ss articulate their learning plan or goal before the academic exercise. In some small way, this encourages a "prior knowledge" step before engaging in new learning. #formativechat
I’m really great at giving Ss feedback and having them look over their work for improvement. I’m constantly working on small groups. But how do you get them involved prior to the FA?
A3 Just TALK and LISTEN to them! It’s true sometimes we forget how simple it is. They have a lot to say! And too many adults in their lives aren’t listening. #formativechat
#formativechat After being a student, a school librarian, and also an adult student, I'm not sure how I feel. Yes, formative is essential, yet often Ss know how to play the game. Just want grade/score/done.
A3: I decided this year students are going to blog & reflect in a digital journal to add to their portfolio. I’m hoping they will be honest about how they perceive the class and give feedback to help me develop material around their needs #formativechat

#formativechat A2 The big TBH. I honestly don't know which way to go, so I find these chats really helpful to spark ideas or remind me of old ones. Thanks PLN :) #aussieED
A2: in our school we have begun to bukd our FA differently and more bass on knowing how our students are performing as compared to similar students across the district. A 80% may not be good and a 65% could be better #formativechat
